Record Numbers Attend Christmas Market Organisers of Penkridge Victorian Christmas Market announced today that they had record numbers attend their annual event on Sunday 27th November. Thousands of people flocked to the event, with organisers saying it was the busiest Christmas Market they’ve ever seen. Matt Williams, Manager of Penkridge Market said: “We were absolutely delighted by the turn out on Sunday. The car park was full and the Market was heaving with people for the whole duration of the event. We made some significant changes in 2015 and changed the day of the event from a Friday evening to a Sunday afternoon and it seems to have paid dividends. This year the event ran from1pm – 7pm, which we hoped would suit families more and it obviously worked wonders.”

gifts for Christmas and it’s a great way for them to support small, local businesses too.”

The Market itself was also bigger this year, with more stall holders than ever before and additional entertainment including a classic car rally. There was also plenty to keep the children amused, with a Fun Fair, Father Christmas, Punch and Judy and even a fire juggler!

The stall holders also got into the festive spirit, dressing in Victorian costumes and decorating their stalls. Prizes were given out on the day to Nicky Williams and Paul and Julia Baker for Best Costumes, whilst the ladies at Banyan Tree (Ann Fulford and Jane Sutherland) won the prize for Best Decorated Stall. The annual event, which has been running on the Market site for over 7 years, is held at the end of November each year. But if you missed this year’s event, you will be pleased to hear that there is a Fine Food and Craft Market on Saturday 16th December, where there will be a wide selection of craft stalls, plus tasty food and drink. Markets will also take place every Wednesday and Saturday leading up to Christmas and there will even be a Market on 23rd December, for those of you who have left your Christmas Shopping until the last minute!

The Macmillan Healing Voices Choir attended the event for the first time, singing traditional Christmas Carols, getting everyone in the Christmas spirit. Matt continued: “There was a lovely atmosphere and it was great to see the Market full of independent stalls, bursting with local crafts and produce. People love to find unique

What sort of year will you create in 2018? It’s a blank canvas and I’d be delighted to help and support you in gaining clarity around what is important for you.

Through the choices we make every day, we are all the creators of our own lives and the organisations in which we work.

For business, do you aspire to be an organisation based on high trust and high performance levels? If so, then let’s make it happen.

Whatever your aspirations, let’s make 2018 a year in which we take some time to stop, reflect and question, to learn and hopefully find some answers and insights along the way.

As an individual, will it be driven by your own intrinsic motivators or externally imposed expectations? How do you want to feel in 2018?

So, ask yourself are you prepared to take action today?

Recipe of the month Protein Packed Greek Yoghurt Brownie Bites Deciding to embrace healthy eating is a pretty big step so if you’ve got that far, well done. The tricky part is figuring out what to eat. Sure, you can stock up on diet shakes and steamed veggies, but you can only go so far before the binge cravings break through! So we have a deliciously tempting recipe, packed with protein to keep you feeling fuller for longer - and bursting with chewy, chocolatey, nutty goodness. Made with Greek yoghurt, you can leave out the fat but still get a rich and beautifully textured brownie. Ingredients

1. Preheat the oven to 175C. Line a medium sized shallow baking tray with baking paper.

Makes 10-12 brownies • 130g self-raising flour • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 100g dark chocolate, broken into small chunks • 100g dates, pre-soaked, pitted and chopped • 70g cocoa powder • 200g Greek yoghurt (either full fat or low fat) • 75g chopped nuts (optional)

2. In a large bowl, mix together all the dry ingredients until evenly blended. 3. Melt dark chocolate by placing in a glass bowl, over hot water. Stir regularly until evenly melted. It should be smooth and glossy. 4. Allow chocolate to cool slightly, and then blend in Greek yoghurt. Whip through until a light, fluffy texture is achieved. 5. Combine chocolate mixture with flour, and add dates. Mix everything together gently until even. 6. Pour into baking tray, and decorate with chopped nuts if using them. As a nut-free alternative, you can add dried fruit or chocolate chips. 7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, and check with a knife. The brownie cake should be soft and slightly sticky, but firm to the touch. 8. Allow to cool, before cutting into portions.

Beauty Break Your Bad Beauty Habits It’s the start of another new year, which means that there has never been a better time to leave your bad beauty habits behind. Bad Beauty Habit 1 - Sleeping with your make-up on Never, no matter how tired you are, go to bed with any trace of make-up still on your face. Mascara that hasn’t been removed will quickly dry-out your eyelashes, making them brittle and weak. Last night’s foundation will clog your pores, leaving you prone to nasty break-outs. The Solution - Establish a cleansing routine Make cleansing your face a priority. Dedicate 15 minutes in the evening to your skin: cleanse, tone, moisturise and apply your face and eye creams. Always keep a pack of cleansing wipes next to your bed, so that if you return home after a big night out you can still attempt to remove some of your make-up. Bad Beauty Habit 2 - Using heat stylers on your hair every day If you straighten, curl or blow dry your hair every day you will be causing damage to your tresses that could result in split ends, dried-out lengths and dulllooking locks.

The Solution - Try something new Try a new style - maybe sweep your hair up, or use hair accessories to attain a different look. Find products that cater to your needs; if you want straight lengths then use a straightening shampoo and conditioner. You don’t have to say goodbye to your much-loved heat styler altogether. Instead use it more sparingly and ensure that you spritz your hair with a heat protecting product first. Bad Beauty Habit 3 - Using make-up that is past its best Some plead ignorance, others say they can’t let go, but whatever excuse you have for not throwing that ancient mascara away won’t cut it when you hear the truth about out-ofdate make-up. Although your cosmetics look innocent enough, after being opened they offer a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. And over time, you can end up suffering from some seriously nasty eye infections, skin irritations and blemishes. The Solution - Regularly clear-out your make-up bag Mascaras, liquid eyeliners and lip glosses should be thrown away every 3 or 4 months. Foundation is ok for around 12 months, as are lipsticks and eyeshadows. Bad Beauty Habit 4 - Stuck in a make-up rut You’ve been applying your make-up the same way for as long as you can remember. You haven’t updated the colour of

Image: Lisa Shepherd Hair

your cosmetics for many years and you’ll only ever buy certain products. It sounds like you’re stuck in a make-up rut. The Solution - Seek a professional opinion The easiest way to break this bad beauty habit is to seek some professional help. Visit any of the top beauty counters in your favourite department store and ask for a make-over. Most consultants will be more than happy to help you find a new look and often this service is free. Bad Beauty Habit 5 Overlooking your eyebrows Over-plucked brows are as bad as over-grown brows; many women make mistakes when it comes to one of their most important facial features. Eyebrows serve as a frame for your eyes and creating the right shape instantly lifts your face and draws attention to your eyes. The Solution - Pay a visit to the salon You can’t beat professionally sculpted brows. Whether you choose to have them waxed, tweezed or plucked, your beautician will assess your needs and leave them looking perfect. By Helen Taylor

Penkridge Civic Society At the recent Annual General Meeting of the Penkridge Civic Society, tribute was paid by Amanda Parkyn, on behalf of all the members, to the retiring Chairman David Calcroft.

Left seated Mrs Ann Smith, Mr David Calcroft, right – Mrs Sue Grey, new Chairman.

Mr Calcroft had been the Chairman since 1995 when he led a very successful relaunch of the then inactive Civic Society and was elected Chairman in June of that year, when the Society began holding regular meetings, with speakers on many subjects, also, under David’s leadership, becoming involved in the village’s Best Kept Village entries. In 1999 David negotiated the purchase of the Old Gaol, and obtained a generous grant of £40,000 for the high quality restoration and conversion of the building to the Heritage Centre of today, which is visited and admired by many visitors each season when it is open from Easter to the end of September. Many other achievements have been made under his leadership, including the publication of his own book ‘A Capital Village’ which is still selling well today, Local History classes being held in partnership with Keele University, the society’s formal recognition in local planning consultation processes and the obtaining of many grants for publications and improvements. Mrs. Parkyn wished David a well-earned rest from his unceasing efforts in 22 years at the helm for the Society and expressed the appreciation of all members for everything he has achieved. Mrs. Sue Gray, the new Chairman of the Society made a presentation to Mr. Calcroft and he was also elected as the Society’s first President.

Penkridge Middle School meet Michael Rosen In December, a group of students from year 6 at Penkridge Middle School travelled to Chase Grammar School in Cannock to take part in a poetry workshop led by renowned poet Michael Rosen. Michael is a former children’s Poet Lauraete, has written over 140 books and made countless TV appearences so this really was a fantastic opportunity especially as the children are reading one of his books ‘The Wicked Tricks of Till Owlyglass’ in school at the moment.

experiences and even told the audience how he now has his own youtube channel directed by his son and how this has resulted in a line from one of his poems “click...nice” being an internet sensation. Some of the Penkridge pupils were also able to have a private chat with Michael about inspirations for the book they are reading and a couple were even interviewed for the BBC and made a brief cameo appearance on Midlands Today that evening.

On arrival the children were treated to poems from some of the students from the other schools there which Michael evaluated before the man himself took centre stage. He shared many of his famous poems with particular favourites being; Chocolate cake and You’re not allowed to breathe in class and there were lots of chances for audience participation. Following a short break the morning resumed with a lengthy question and answer session during which Michael told the enthralled audience about his career as a poet and author ranging from when he began writing at the age of 12 through to today. He shared many of bios famous books and

34

At the end of the session all of the children were given a new Parker pen as a thanks for attending which they soon put into use on return to school by writing their own poems Michael Rosen style.

A Medley of Music

Codsall Community Arts Festival Music in all its forms has always been an important feature of Codsall Community Arts Festival. As well as the classical repertoire it is always extremely satisfying to be able to present a variety of other exciting and prestigious musical evenings. It is a pleasure to welcome the internationally acclaimed Morriston Orpheus Choir to Perton Civic Centre on 10th March. Anyone who watched Centenary of the Somme on television will have witnessed the extremely moving quality of this male choir’s performance. Also at Perton Civic Centre, but on 16th March, those of you who love music of the 40’s and 50’s

40

have a treat in store as the JB Jazz and Blues Band entertain you. Between them this fun-loving band will perform on a range of instruments including banjo and saxes. And for something entirely different how about coming along to experience the vibrant Balkan Gypsy Magic? Much in demand, they have performed at such venues as the South Bank Centre and the Royal Albert Hall. As well as the traditional repertoire of music from Eastern Europe there will also be a dancer. This energetic folk band will be at Codsall Community High School on 20th March.

Stafford Lions Flush with Pride! Stafford Lions may be some of the country’s oldest paper boys and girls when they deliver The Penkridge Advertiser’s ‘sister’ publication, The Stafford Directory, but they are putting the takings from their round to good use. Before Christmas Stafford Lions decided to donate some of the proceeds from their paper round to purchase a present for a school in Malawi - a new toilet block! Around a third of the world’s population-2.4 million people- don’t have a loo and because of dirty water and poor sanitation every minute a child under the age of five dies. Women and girls are particularly vulnerable to be bitten by snakes or attacked as they go to the edge of their village to go to the toilet.

42

A charity aptly named “Toilet Twinning” raises funds to enable people living in poor communities abroad to have clean water, a basic toilet and to learn about basic hygiene and following a frank but witty presentation, Stafford Lions decided to get involved. To find out more about this worthy cause visit www.toilettwinning.org or contact 0300 321 3217. You can even buy a loved one a printed loo roll, a soap bar or give a Toilet Twinning Gift Box! Sponsors receive a framed certificate with a photograph of your toilet twin and the latrines exact location so you can hang it in your loo and flush with pride! Lions International motto is simply “We Serve” so if you would like to

volunteer to help with projects in our local community or raise money to sponsor overseas aid just contact Stafford Lions Club - 0845 8335834 see our web page or visit us on Facebook. Stafford Lions Putting the FUN into FUNDRAISING!

Cannock & District Soroptimists Supporting the Pathway Project 10/09/2014 09:59

This year Cannock Soroptimists again supported

the Pathway Project by providing Christmas gifts

such as clothing, beauty packs, toys & games for women and children who will be spending

Christmas in the refuge run by the Pathway Project for women victims of domestic violence.

The donated gifts filled two cars and the gifts, together with wrapping paper and all the trimmings, were gratefully accepted by staff from Pathway. On

Christmas morning the women and children will be

able to open gifts specially chosen for them, knowing

that they are being thought of – and hopefully this will help them a little at such an emotional time of year. Some members of SI Cannock recently attended

the Pathway AGM and were moved to hear stories

from the women who are domestic violence victims

and who have benefitted from the services provided by Pathway. The stories heard reiterate the need to

January 2018

continue to support these women & their children in any way possible.

Cannock & District Soroptimists had their usual stall

at Norton Canes on Sunday 3rd December when the

Community Centre held their annual Winter Fair. Club members sold reindeer food – they helped children to fill bags with food for Rudolph & his friends - as well as showcasing issues & organisations supported by Soroptimist International.

National Trust Staffordshire Centre Upcoming Talks Programme Leek, Queen of the Moorlands Tuesday 9th January Danny Wells is a history enthusiast his particular interests being social and cultural history with a focus on Victorian Britain. He has great affection for the Derbyshire Dales and Staffordshire Moorlands and lives in Mappleton, just west of Ashbourne, a lovely village with interesting architecture. In memories section of this Newsletter there are some photographs of Mappleton. His talk today focus’s on Victorian Leek with particularly reference to the Arts and Crafts. The town had a thriving silk industry and many of the buildings in the town reflect the wealth that was generated. Members of a local family, William Sugden and his son designed many of the Victorian buildings and were keen to preserve many of the earlier buildings. William Morris resided there for a few years.

Gianpiero is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and is currently a member of the ARPS-FRPS assessing panel. He has been interested in nature for many years. The charity she so passionately supports was started by Drs Reg and Catherine Hamlin, who as gynaecologists and obstetricians from New Zealand and Australia, went to work in a hospital in Adis Ababa in 1959. What they witnessed there prompted them to train women as midwives and subsequently opened their own hospital in Adis Ababa (in 1974) to give the girls and women the operations and care that they so desperately needed to put right the horrific childbirth injuries they sustained. There are now 5 outreach hospitals around Adis Ababa and over 50,000 females have been successfully treated. Vehicle Crime Prevention Tips Staffordshire Police

Below are some simple things that you can do to avoid becoming a victim of car theft.

maintained so you and your neighbours can see the vehicle from your properties.

Keys

• Consider dusk till dawn lighting to illuminate the area.

• Don’t leave your keys in the vehicle unattended. This includes on winter mornings while “warming up” the vehicle or waiting for the windscreen to defrost. Your insurance company is unlikely to compensate you if your car is stolen in this situation. • Keep your keys out of reach and out of sight when at home. They are vulnerable to being snatched in sneak-in burglaries. Keys hung up or placed near front doors could be “fished” using a hook and wire fed through a letterbox.

• When parking on a street, pick a well-lit and populated area.

Tracking If you own a desirable, expensive car or unique vehicle, consider fitting a Thatcham CAT5 approved multi-band (GPS /GSM/VHF) tracking system. Have it installed by a professional fitter and advertise it by displaying window stickers. Effective Thatcham CAT5 systems are expensive to install and have high annual fees.

• Keep your keys secure when out and about. • Keep spare keys secure and safe at all times. Consider giving it to a friend or relative for safe keeping, especially if you are going away.

They also need robust locating networks in place to help in the recovery of stolen vehicles quickly.

Steering Locks

• When using remote locking key fobs check for visible or audible signals that your vehicle locked when you pressed the button.

Use a steering lock in combination with a steering wheel security disk lock. It is a cheap and effective way to prevent anyone driving your vehicle away.

• Ensure that you close your windows before you leave your vehicle.

Parking • Use your garage if you have one. • On private driveways, keep trees and shrubs 54
