Would you like to unlock a new door in your life? Here’s an offer you don’t see every day and it’s a pretty safe bet that most of you reading this haven’t been to prison. But there is a very good chance that you will if you join a group of local people who are members of a very unusual organisation. Called The Independent Monitoring Board their role is exactly that. To independently monitor prisons, in this case Featherstone Prison, near Wolverhampton. Think of a volunteer and your mind will probably wander to somebody behind the local charity shop. Or perhaps somebody rattling tins in the High Street. But these people have an edgier life than most volunteers. “Edgier maybe but totally absorbing, said Ian Marks, chairman of Featherstone IMB. “The job is not everybody’s cup of tea. But if anybody is looking for a new challenge, then this could be for them.” Featherstone Prison is grade Category C and is classified as a resettlement and working prison and houses approx. 687 prisoners. Its role – other than the obvious one of holding prisoners securely – is to try and furnish them with the necessary skills to ensure they find employment when released and don’t reoffend. So what is the IMB’s role in all this? Well it’s a pretty wide brief. “Our prime role is to ensure that The Ministry of Justice rules are properly applied and that the highest standards of care and decency are maintained. “The job, which is unpaid but expenses are covered, is hugely interesting, challenging and 8

absorbing but it is not for everyone. You need to be enthusiastic, open minded, have good communication skills and have the ability to exercise sound, objective judgement. We will be looking to recruit some new members this summer and would like to hear from anybody who lives within a 15 mile radius of Featherstone Prison. “You do not need any special qualifications or experience as we will provide all the necessary training and support. The task typically takes up something in the region of approx. 5 days per month visiting the prison, talking to prisoners and staff and attending monthly board meetings.”

Consider Canada by Helen Taylor

Canada is to many of us little more than simply the home of moose and Mounties, but this oft-overlooked holiday destination has seen a recent rise in popularity. Full of too many cities and territories to cover in a lifetime – let alone during a single holiday – this rugged wilderness is best broken down into smaller parts, so here’s your guide to two of the most popular parts of the country which gave us Niagra Falls.

degrees C in just one hour. Warm summer weather arrives in June and lasts until September, with daily July temperatures in the cities averaging 24 degrees C.

Alberta Alberta – which is a large province, located to the south-west – is one of the most breathtaking places on earth. The rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountains, turquoise lakes, boreal forests, rushing rivers, rolling grasslands and prairies sets the scene for a genuine adventure.

You can learn to surf on the relentless Pacific waves of Tofino; sample award-winning local wines in the arid Okanagan Valley. Dine at cosmopolitan seafood restaurants in Vancouver; be awed by wild whale sightings in the remote Haida Gwaii.

Touch the top of a mountain then soak in natural hot springs. Dust off a dinosaur bone on a dig in the Canadian Badlands. Saddle up and herd cattle on a working ranch, then immerse yourself in all things western at the annual Calgary Stampede. Stay in a fairy-tale alpine castle, rustic backcountry lodge, or camp out in a tipi. Hike endless scenic trails in the summer and spot deer, elk, moose, bighorn sheep or bears. Return in winter to ski Alberta’s famous deep fluffy powder at any of six Canadian Rocky Mountain resorts. And be sure to travel by dogsled to see the splendour of the Northern Lights. Ski and snowboard season is from November until May, with best snow conditions in January through to March. Wildlife viewing is best from spring until autumn. Hike, cycle, camp, paddle and ride from May until October but be prepared for cool evenings. Alberta is undoubtedly a ‘four-season’ destination, however winter can be fiercely cold. Although Southern Alberta is also known for its strong, warm winter “Chinook winds” that rush down from the mountains, raising temperatures from freezing to more than 15

August 2016

British Columbia British Columbia – which lies beside Alberta, on the Pacific west-coast – is a province on the southern tip of Canada. It bills itself as a ‘land of adventure’. Of that there can be no doubt:

Then carve up untracked powder in famous ski-resort, Whistler; immerse yourself in the Gold Rush history of Barkerville or engage with First Nations cultures at aboriginal heritage sites; and spot bears, eagles and elk in pristine coastal rainforests.

Ski season is from December until April. Wildlife viewing and whale watching is best in summer and autumn. Vancouver and Victoria are vibrant cities year-round. Hike, camp, paddle and surf in British Columbia’s many national parks from May until October. Be sure to plan your holiday around some of the many vibrant festivals and events, which take place in the towns and cities. Warm summer weather extends from late-June until September — expect average daily July temperatures of 17.5 degrees C in Vancouver. Winter, from December until March, brings the most varied weather patterns.

SI Cannock & District say Thank You Cannock Soroptimists would like to thank all of those people who were so very generous with

their donations of pre-loved bras, toiletries and teddy bears at St Luke’s Church Fayre.

Soroptimists work in many ways to give service, raise funds and raise awareness about issues to enable, educate and empower women who find themselves in difficult situations. An on-going project for the club is to support Pathway, providing help and refuge to women victims of domestic violence. At their stall at the Church Fayre Soroptimists welcomed donations of toiletries, and other items essential to women, to be given to them at a time when they have nothing. President Carole Holdcroft was thrilled to be able to take a car boot full of goods to Pathway! These will be put to immediate use within the refuge. Soroptimists also continue to do work within the issue of trafficking and are collecting bras which will be sent, through the Purple Teardrop campaign, to Uganda, Mozambique and El Salvador to enable women rescued from trafficking to set up businesses in order to be self sufficient and to keep them out of trafficking and the sex trade. Members of the club were overwhelmed with the response to their request for bras, many women who read about it set up their own collections at work and so far over 600 Bras have been donated - with more promised! This means that 6 women can be helped so far - along with 100 bras each they will be given business training and there will be a support

of local people. A new venture for the club is to support the Buddy Bag Foundation with new teddy bears – fluffy toy or knitted varieties – which go into the bag given to children who sadly find themselves in a refuge because of domestic abuse toward a parent. 8 teddy bears were donated, so 8 children will receive love and comfort thanks to the people of Cannock Many have been in touch with us since our collection point at St Luke’s and so we are continuing to collect bras, toiletries and teddy bears until the end of July. Should you have items to donate please contact

National Trust Staffordshire Centre Upcoming Events Programme Port Sunlight Wednesday 3rd August The model village of Port Sunlight was created in 1888 by William Hesketh Lever to house his factory workers. William was a business man, entrepreneur, philanthropist, liberal politician, educator, disciplinarian and collector. He was the first to build a modern multi-national business in Britain. So successful was and is this business, now known as Unilever, that it’s turnover in 2014 was 48.4 billion. Exploring the museum, art gallery, model village and gardens will give you an insight into the life, the achievements and legacy of this very interesting man.

Cycle safety

Staffordshire Police Bikes can be an easy target for opportunist thieves. Staffordshire Police urge people to

take simple crime prevention measures to keep their bikes safe.

Often you will see young people get off their bikes and leave them while they go inside a shop or their home. Encourage them to always secure their bike by locking it through the frame and on something solid or in the bike rack outside the shop if there is one. At home ask your children to put their bikes in the back garden even if it is for a short while, and lock it every time. When they have finished riding their bikes, put them in a garage or shed. As an additional security measure consider fitting ground anchors. If you are going on holiday, consider asking a relative or a trusty neighbour to keep your family bikes in their shed or garage. If a thief knows you are away they may take the opportunity to check out your shed and garage to see what they can steal.

What’s on in August 2016 at your local library in the Penkridge, Brewood, Codsall area Staffordshire libraries continue to reach out to their communities with a host of events, activities and services for August.

The Summer Reading Challenge is in full swing at Your Library! The Summer Reading Challenge takes place every year during the summer holidays. This year, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Roald Dahl, the Summer Reading Challenge is called The Big Friendly Read and will feature some of Roald Dahl’s best-loved characters and the amazing artwork of his principal illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake. You can sign up at your local library, then read six library books of your choice, collecting stickers and other rewards along the way – all FREE.

Penkridge Library Monday 1st August, 1pm-2pm Codsall Library Wednesday 10th August, 10:30am-11:30am All £3 per child (£2.50 for Library Members). Booking Essential as numbers are limited. For more information or to book a place, please contact Codsall Library and Penkridge Library via the Staffordshire County Council Contact Centre, on 0300 111 8000. Contact Your Library for more details about the Summer Reading Challenge or visit www.bigfriendlyread.org.uk

J.R.R Tolkien in Staffordshire 1915 – 1918 touring exhibition at Penkridge Library.

The Summer Reading Challenge is aimed at children aged four to eleven. Contact Your Library for more details or pop along or visit, www.bigfriendlyread.org.uk

An exciting touring exhibition, organised by The Haywood Society, supported by the Staffordshire Libraries and Arts Service and the Museum of Cannock Chase and funded by The Heritage Lottery Fund will be at Penkridge Library from Wednesday 24th August to Saturday 22nd October.

Zoolab presents ‘Marvellous Beasts’ – A Tale perfect of the Summer Reading Challenge

The exhibition, which has already attracted nearly 8000 visitors since launch in March, focuses on the time that Tolkien spent in Staffordshire during the First World War highlighting the story for local residents, school groups, visitors to the county and interested groups such as The Tolkien Society and Tolkien scholars and enthusiasts. Visitors to the exhibition, which will be visiting several of the county’s libraries as part of a year-long tour, will be able to explore the writings, poetry and artwork that Tolkien wrote in Staffordshire as well as learn more about life for soldiers in Staffordshire during the Great War.

Taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge helps prevent the ‘summer reading dip’ in achievement when children at home over the long Summer break traditionally lose ground in their reading. The Challenge is a fun and creative way to encourage children to read using an incentive based reward scheme. This year, Zoolab’s story is a fantastical tale of William, a gloriumptious worm, and his one-worm crusade to combat climate change and change the world - all whilst touching on the themes of mischief, invention, adventure, wordplay, child champions, and friendship. William’s enthusiasm draws in a whole host of Zoolab animals from millipedes to spiders, snakes and frogs to rats and lizards who all discover that he is not frothbuggling after all!

Charity Obstacle Run at St John’s First School in Bishops Wood On Friday 1st July the children of St Johns First School Bishops wood took part in

their very own Race for Life obstacle run. The children completed this as this is a cause that has touched our hearts this year.

The children raised an amazing ÂŁ1807 for

Cancer Research, Compton Hospice and for a memorial friendship bench for Mrs Guest who was a much loved teaching assistant at St Johns for over 14 years.

A massive congratulations to all the children. Well done!
