Grandma has three chickens that live in a pen at the bottom of the garden. They talk to one another in loud squawks and are always very noisy. One winter’s day, Alice, her granddaughter comes to visit but it is snowing so hard she can’t take Max the dog out for a walk. The next day, though it has stopped snowing, Max goes outside to play with the chickens and disappears……..Wherever can he have gone?

Recipe of the month Ginger Christmas Puddings
These fruity mini puds flavoured with stem ginger are much lighter than a traditional rich Christmas pudding and don’t need to be made weeks in advance. Makes 6. Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes.
Ingredients • 175g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 175g self-raising flour • 1/2 tsp baking powder
1. Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas Mark 5. Butter six small pudding basins (each about 200ml capacity) and line the bases with circles of baking parchment. 2. Place the butter, flour, baking powder, sugar, spices and eggs in a large mixing bowl and beat together with an electric mixer for 1-2 minutes until pale and creamy. Fold in the dried mixed fruit and two-thirds of the cherries and stem
• 175g light muscovado sugar
ginger.
• 1 tsp each ground mixed spice and ground ginger
3. Divide the mixture evenly between the prepared pudding basins then cover
• 3 large eggs • 100g dried mixed fruit • 50g glace cherries, chopped • 50g stem ginger, finely chopped • 4 tbsp stem ginger syrup • Softly whipped cream or brandy butter, to serve
each basin with a circle of greased and pleated baking parchment and secure with string. Cover each basin with pleated foil. 4. Stand the basins in a roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the basins. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until risen, firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into a pudding comes out clean. 5. Leave the puddings to stand for 10 minutes then turn out onto serving plates. Mix the remaining cherries and ginger with the stem ginger syrup and spoon over the puddings. Serve with cream or brandy butter.
Tip! For a boozy flavour, gently heat the stem ginger syrup with 1-2 tbsp of rum or brandy then pour over the hot puds just before serving. 12

Shocking Child Neglect In Penkridge Elizabeth Leach of Mill Street was cautioned at the Petty Sessions for mistreating her son John, aged 13. John told the hearing that his mother had asked him to wash the dishes but he didn’t want to because he was too tired – hardly surprising given that he’d had nothing to eat that day, other than something taken from a neighbour’s pig bucket. He went off to bed but shortly his mother got him up and pushed him to the kitchen to carry out the chore. Sergeant Campbell said that when he visited the house, the child’s room was dirty and cold and the boy had bruises on his face like fingermarks. He said that the boy’s mother was often drunk and he had noticed on several occasions that the child wasn’t well looked after. Their neighbour, Emma Jones, said she had seen Leach hit John in the stomach with a mop. Mrs Jones had given him food in the past and had even seen him scraping up crumbs that she had put out for the birds because he was so hungry. By the following year, young John had escaped from his mother’s ‘care’ and had found work as a servant at Plashes Farm, Acton Trussell. In 1895, forty-one year old Catherine Fletcher was brought to court by the NSPCC for neglecting her four children, aged between 5 and 13. The court heard that her husband had recently left because of her drunken habits and although the family had been granted a place at the workhouse, she did not take up the offer, presumably because she would not be allowed to drink if admitted. Instead she remained at home and gradually pawned every available possession to support her addiction, to the utter neglect of her children. They all had bruises or wounds as a result of being hit, some of which had become badly infected. Their clothes were ragged and infested with lice, the house was devoid of food and warmth and an oak table was the only piece of furniture she still possessed.
examination the flesh had been bitten right through to the bone. When confronted by Mrs Martin, Fletcher threatened to bite the other children too! As is often the case with such people, the woman had a string of previous convictions. On this occasion she was handed a one month custodial sentence with hard labour. In reply to the pronouncement she could say nothing more than “Very well. Thank you.”
From the book ‘Crime & Chaos in Victorian Penkridge’, local author Paul Robinson. Available locally from Penkridge Hardware or online at www.lulu.com Other publications also available:
A neighbour, Eliza Martin, told the magistrate that Fletcher often returned home drunk, and regularly left her children unattended for many hours at a time. Recently the eldest child had come to her house in tears, saying that his mother had bitten his hand; on

DriveSafe Lenses
As winter approaches, road users frequently find themselves requiring the use of their headlights, due to dark driving conditions. Extra bright headlights such as Xenon have become more common and drivers face an increased risk of being dazzled by other vehicles. This concern is validated by RoSPA, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, who estimates that over 40% of all road accidents occur in the hours of darkness. Driving in the dark can be even more hazardous for glasses wearers and drivers with sensitive eye conditions, as it can result in them becoming momentarily dazed and unable to adjust their focus on the road ahead.
22
At Carolyn Parker Optometrists, we stock advanced technology such as DriveSafe lenses from Zeiss. These help give your eyes added protection from glare and over exposure to bright light, maximising your comfort while behind the wheel, minimising the effects of car headlights and ultimately reducing the potential for accidents. DriveSafe lenses not only help with night-time drivng, but reduce glare from screens in an office environment and support the eye sight of digital device users. They’re available in your prescription in single focus lenses, bifocal lenses, and degressive and progressive lenses. Head into the practice today and see how you can benefit from DriveSafe lenses, or call us on 01785 713861.

Codsall Village Christmas Fair
Friday 1st December Codsall residents once again extend a warm
welcome to our neighbouring villages for an evening of seasonal festivities on Friday 1st December.
Codsall Christmas Fair is back again this year, bigger and better than ever. This great community event, organised by volunteers, is now double the size – meaning double the fun. With a lot more stalls, there is certainly something for everyone – ranging from arts, crafts, gifts, food and much more. You will not have to worry about those last-minute gifts. For those that will be feeling peckish, we have even more hot food & drink stalls this year. Indulge yourself into the festive spirit with mulled wine, prosecco, and roasted chestnuts. We also have hot pork sandwiches, jacket potatoes, German style bratwurst, pizza, and plenty more, allowing all the grown-ups to take a night off from cooking. There will be many activities to keep the little ones busy including fairground rides, kiddie’s roundabout, a bouncy castle and, of course, Santa will be in his grotto, granting everyone’s Christmas wishes. Live music will come from the Sunhoney, Sam Draisey, Alexandra Jayne, a Ukulele Band and the Salvation Army Band with Steve Kaos performing amazing feats in the streets. We also have an appearance from everybody’s favourite football mascot, Wolfie, accompanied by Wendy. Our traditional “Carols around the Christmas Tree” will then draw this wonderful evening to a close but our village pubs and clubs will continue the festivities into the evening. You are all invited to come along, bring your friends and family, and celebrate this special event.

MD Guitars
Custom built guitars and repairs MD Guitars has recently moved into the Penkridge area from its previous location in West Yorkshire. Established as a business by Martin Dixon in 1986, it was the result of a passion for guitars and guitar-based music. Martin is a self-taught ‘luthier’ who has developed his skills over a period of thirty seven years. Initially building guitars for himself and friends, Martin soon began to make instruments to sell and ultimately build them to customers’ specific requirements. These guitars are often totally unique in design, combining exotic timbers with original shapes and features. Customers can choose all aspects of the guitar build, resulting in a totally bespoke instrument.
Prices start at £750 and guitars take between six and twelve weeks to build. As well as producing custom guitars Martin also undertakes all types of repair work and refinishing on a variety of instruments, including guitars, double basses, cellos, violins, ukuleles and banjos. Following a period as a part time lecturer in Guitar Building/Repair at Leeds College of Music, Martin began to offer guitar building courses to people wanting to build their own instruments. This has proved to be a popular part of the business with courses starting at £500, fully inclusive, and lasting from six to twelve days.
Clients of MD Guitars include: Paul Quinn (Saxon), Justin Sullivan (New Model Army), Robin Simon (ex-Ultravox and Visage), Mike Harding (Broadcaster and folk musician) and Ashley Hutchings (Fairport Convention, Albion Band and Steeleye Span). If you would like more information about the services offered you can contact MD Guitars on: 01785 716761, 0752 8532642 or email: martin.dixon@sky.com

FSC Investment Services Limited
Things to consider when making an investment When someone is looking to make an investment there are a number of decisions that need to be made.
investing in either a cash ISA or by opening a standard deposit type account. I say this is a problem simply because unfortunately it is also the one that is likely to give you a very poor return for your investment.
• How much do I want to invest? • What term am I looking to invest over? • What level of volatility (fluctuation in value over time) can I accept? • What happens if I need my money back in an emergency? • Will I pay tax on my profits? • Am I investing for extra income or am I interested in growing my capital? • How much is the advice going to cost me? • What am I expecting in return for investing my money (what interest rate)?
You could potentially access better returns is by investing into areas where the investment is asset backed. This means that the investment would normally be invested within the stock market and other unit linked areas. For further details of our service please call FSC on 01902 422333.
The problem is that most people when faced with these decisions opt to take the easy route out, in other words you do what you think is the least risky and easiest to understand option; almost invariably that means popping into your local Building Society and

Acton and Bednall Men’s Society (ABMS) The Acton and Bednall Men’s Society (ABMS) was formed back in 2004 to promote male fellowship within the villages of Acton Trussell and Bednall. The society flourished and has now grown and is open to all men in outlying villages.
Our proposed program for the coming few months are: December 6th 2017 - 7:30pm - Christmas Concert St.James Church Acton Trussell ‘Wheaton Aston Voices Choir’ will be performing. Everyone welcome!
Our monthly meetings are augmented by additional social activities and functions throughout the year to which spouses/partners also warmly welcomed. We have also now included a number of great value excursions to popular locations and events, all of which depart and return to Acton Trussell. Many of our events are open to all residents. Our meetings are held at 7:30pm on the second Thursday of every month at The Moat House, Acton Trussell. The first three meetings are completely free of charge to all new members. Our current annual membership is just £17.50.
