On Friday 27th May Sophie Moseley (Year 13 student) organised and ran a bake sale to raise money for Support Our Paras. Fellow students Chloe Locke, Michael Craney and Hannah Walker (all Year 13) helped to sell cakes in our Library at lunch and break time. Sophie and her team managed to raise £171 for the charity. “I think it is important that as students we are all able to make a positive difference to others,” said Sophie, “I am so thankful for everyone’s help and support during this event.”

David Errington (Year 12 student), “I was also impressed with the selection of cakes that were on sale too.” “The £171 pound raised today will go to help fund mobility equipment, sports equipment for wounded Regimental teams, memorials for those soldiers who have served as well as important courses to help soldiers transition into civilian life.”

Support Our Paras is a charity that supports The Parachute Regiment through the welfare of serving soldiers, their families and those who have been affected by recent military operations. “For the past two years Sophie, Hannah, Chloe and Mikey have been organising these bake sales to raise money for this really worthwhile charity,” said Miss Sarah Roberts (Learning Resources Centre Administrator), “It is brilliant to see students taking positive action to help make a difference to others.” “I think it is great to see fellow sixth formers being able to organise events like this,” said

Brewood Woggle

BREWOOD 10KM IS BACK FOR A 5TH SUCCESSIVE YEAR! The month of September is the month when runners get back into serious training and competition mode after their summer break: so, what better than to enter the Brewood 10km race?

Now in its fifth year, it has been transformed from a fun run attracting around 50 runners from the local community to a fully marshalled, timed and measured race with over 200 participants. This doesn’t mean that the race has lost its family feel and atmosphere, there are still homemade cakes at the end for the hungry runners and great support from locals on the route. The route takes you through the beautiful countryside around Chillington Hall before weaving towards the village centre via the killer Dean Street hill. The race attracts serious runners and newcomers alike as the route is mainly flat and fast and the finish attracts a carnival type atmosphere with runners finishing to applause by onlookers in the village square. 10

However there is a serious side to the run as it forms part of the Brewood Scout’s fundraising campaign to build a new Scout Hut. The old hut has been earmarked for demolition and is lacking in modern facilities. The Brewood 10km together with its sister event – The Brewood Cycle Challenge have now become established events on the fundraising calendar. Event organiser – Beccy Jones-Reading, herself a London Marathon Runner commented: “The success of the Brewood 10km has been a major contributor to our fundraising calendar and we are very pleased with the growth in runner numbers each year. We are very thankful that we have some fantastic volunteers who tirelessly work to make the event run as smoothly as possible”. The run takes place on Sunday 23rd September, starting from St Dominic’s Grammar School in Brewood. There are children’s races at 9am for under 8’s and under 12’s with the main event starting at 10am. Entries are open via Run Britain: contact www.brewoodwoggle.com or our Facebook page for more information. We are also looking for marshals, if you can help, please let us know.

RURAL COMMUNITY CALLED UPON TO HELP TACKLE CRIME Staffordshire’s rural community is being urged to make its voice heard, by the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office. Sue Arnold, Staffordshire’s Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner, is calling on businesses and residents to speak out by completing the 2018 National Rural Crime Survey. The most recent survey, from three years ago, revealed the cost of crime to rural communities – both financial, at £800m per year, and fear, with ‘under-reporting, anger and frustration’ at the police and Government. The National Rural Crime Network produced a series of recommendations and police took steps to improve matters. So, now, we want to know what has changed? Do you think rural crime has gone up or down in Staffordshire? Do you feel safer? What’s your view of the police in your community? We want to know the true picture of crime in rural communities across the county. Questions cover a range of issues from whether you report crimes, to the impact crime has on you and your area, and whether you believe enough is done to catch those who carry out the offences. It’s all about making sure the voice of rural communities is heard by those who can make a difference from the Police to Government. The survey is now available at nationalruralcrimenetwork.net and is open for submissions until 10 June. Mrs Arnold, who is the representative for Staffordshire on the NRCN, is calling upon residents to spare a minute by completing the survey. The DPCC said: ‘Staffordshire has vast areas of rural and agricultural land. ‘We are compiling this national survey to give us a national picture but also how we can devolve local, county strategies towards this issue. I live and work in the rural community and have done for the last 18 years so I am well aware of the unique challenges that face our communities on a daily basis. I would therefore urge you to spare a few minutes to fill out this survey. It will provide a clear picture of what has improved, what challenges remain and what more can be done to support isolated parts of the county.’ One focus is whether rural crime continues to be underreported. Three years ago, one in four said they didn’t report the last crime they’d been a victim of because they didn’t see the point.

Beauty Tips SMILE BRIGHT

A bright white smile is associated with youth and vitality because as we age, our teeth start to discolour naturally. Whilst good dental health is an essential basis for your youthful smile, many external factors can make otherwise good teeth look unhealthy. So how can you address this? The first step is to avoid the things that cause your teeth to yellow in the first place. Smoking, coffee (particularly black coffee), tea, red wine, cola drinks and curry will all cause discolouring. If you do indulge, brush your teeth as soon as practical afterwards. For red wine or cola using a straw will minimise the effects as this delivers the liquid into your mouth without touching your teeth. Crunchy, raw foods such as carrots, celery and apples are natural cleaners. They encourage your mouth to

salivate and can help to rub off the plaque that sticks to your teeth. There are many whitening toothpastes available although some can be pricey. Often the main ingredient in these toothpastes is baking soda. You can make your own paste of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda although it won’t taste great and you shouldn’t use it every day as it can be abrasive. If toothpaste and vegetables are not enough to make a noticeable difference, then the next option is to go for a teeth whitening treatment. It is possible to buy kits to do this at home and this is certainly a cost effective way of getting a bright white smile. However, treatment from a dentist will both achieve better results and be much quicker.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

350g (12oz) linguine

Cook the linguine in a large pan of lightly salted, boiling water for 10-12 mins or according to the packet instructions until tender but still with a little bite.

1 tbsp olive oil 1 small red chilli pepper, deseeded and finely chopped 225g (8oz) raw, peeled tiger prawns 8 sundried tomatoes in oil, sliced, plus 3-4 tbsp of the marinating oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper Few fresh basil leaves

Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the chilli for 1-2 mins. Add the prawns and cook over a medium-high heat for 3-4 mins, stirring all the time until they have turned from grey to pink. Drain the pasta and add to the frying pan with the sun-dried tomatoes and the marinating oil. Toss well to mix and heat through for 1-2 mins. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately garnished with fresh basil leaves.

Top Tip: If you’re not too keen on chilli then replace with a finely choppped spring onion. 30

PENKRIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL I N T E R N AT I O N A L B A L L B OY S pitch as the players lined up and undertook their roles as ball boys in a tightly contested 0-0 draw between the teams. Due to the relatively small crowd there lots of opportunities for the boys to go into the stands to retrieve the stray balls and keep the game moving. After the game the children had the opportunity to meet some of the players and received a commemorative Tee shirt and wristband from UEFA.. Twelve pupils from Penkridge Middle School along with two friends from Cannock Chase High School have enjoyed the thrill of being international ball boys and flag bearers this week as they have undertaken duties for a two UEFA Under 17s qualifiers held at Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium. The children were invited to undertake these roles by Walsall FC head of community Adam Davy who said that it was due to the fact the same children had done a similar job for Walsall in the best and always been extremely reliable and well behaved. Friday’s match was played between Portugal and Norway and the children were treated as an integral part of the staff from the moment they arrived, being briefed by a member of the Football Association and were guided throughout. Prior to the match they held the official flags on the

Monday’s match saw England take on Italy in front of a much larger crowd of over 7000. The game was played on the warmest May Day in history and was also live on television so was a truly brilliant experience. The boys got a really close encounter of the action, with those near the dugouts particularly enjoying the very animated managers and bench and their celebrations after each goal in a 2 - 1 win for England. At the end of the game both teams stopped to talk to some of the children and sign autographs. The ball boys were again presented with gifts from the FA. This has been a fantastic experience for everyone and the children have done their job well and represented UEFA, the Football Association, Walsall FC and their schools superbly. They all hope to be able to do a similar activity on numerous occasions in the future.

The Story of EJN Care Solutions - ‘The Farm’

Caring for other people is in Emma’s blood. Coming from a family of nurses, teachers and other healthcare professionals she was fascinated by illness from an early age - so much so she asked for a box of plasters for Christmas one year.

Before Emma became a nurse in 1994 she was a care assistant working with children and adults with learning disabilities and difficulties in the community and their own homes. Emma felt in awe of how parents coped with very little being offered in the community. After working in various areas of the NHS as a nurse, Emma decided she needed a new challenge and came full circle to work as a Physical Health Lead for adults with mental health and learning disabilities. After her health deteriorated Emma decided to improve her work life balance, taking on a new business offering bespoke day care to adults with learning disabilities and difficulties. Emma completed the sale of ‘The Farm’ on May 1st, her birthday and what a birthday present it is. At The Farm we have 3 amazing staff and one bank staff member who all have experience of caring for

individuals with learning disabilities and difficulties. Business runs from Lower Drayton Farm, a fully working farm in Penkridge. We have a small plot of land and a classroom for indoor activities, offering day care from 10-3pm five days a week. With support from staff our clients are encouraged to develop new skills and build on existing ones. Skills areas range from, animal husbandry, animal welfare, arts and crafts, cooking, woodwork, shelter building and growing vegetables, fruit and flowers. As well as caring for our own animals including chickens, sheep, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs and ducks we get to help the farmer with rheas, geese, llamas and feeding the lambs. The farm even has a resident peacock! The Farm is currently looking for new clients for full or half days. We can offer places to adults with learning disabilities and difficulties, sensory issues and minor brain injuries. We will come and assess your needs in the comfort of your own home and draw up a plan together of what each individual person requires for their day care.

BREWOOD SINGERS Last year they raised £825 for Parkinson’s UK and earlier this year helped the MS Therapy Centre in Wolverhampton raise over £500. At their major concerts this year they are raising funds for ‘Assistance Dogs UK’ from the proceeds of raffles that they hold at their Summer & Christmas concerts in Brewood with the prizes being mostly donated by members of the singers. The fund raising begins with their Summer concert which is on 16th June at St Mary & St Chad Church, Brewood at 7.30pm and their guests are Championship Section Jackfield Brass Band.

Brewood Singers are based in Brewood and sing to audiences for pleasure and as their hobby, all over South Staffordshire & beyond. Their members are taken from Brewood, Penkridge & other villages in the area as well as a few members from further afield.

Tickets are £10 & are available from the secretary 07900693754 or online at https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/ thebrewoodsingers

The Singers also like to use their singing to raise money for good causes.

Cannock and District Ladies Probus Cannock and District Ladies Probus Chairman Sheila Burrows welcomed 115 members, friends, and guests from other local Probus Clubs to the Annual Lunch at Chase Golf Club.

This fantastic turn out was mainly due to the draw of our speaker, Lesley Smith. Lesley is a medical historian and Curator of Tutbury Castle. She is also an acclaimed television performer who gives historically accurate and entertaining portrayals of famous women. Today she arrived in medieval costume as Katherine Swynford, born in 1350, who became the mistress of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster. Lesley kept us enthralled, weaving her tale of how Katherine enchanted John with her flowing blonde hair; and bore John three children outside wedlock. Following their eventual marriage, the children were legitimised. This was a true love story spanning 30 years; and their union has produced descendants to our own Queen Elizabeth II, many European Monarchs, and five American Presidents. 47

The vote of thanks was given by Immediate Past Chairman Pam Clarke. Chairman Sheila thanked Barbara Bowman who had done such a wonderful job in organising the event, and the staff of The Chase Golf Club for a delicious meal. The next meeting is on June 7th when the speaker will be Margaret Clarke with the intriguing title of “Are You Avril?. Meetings are held at The Chase Golf and Country Club on the first Thursday of the month at 12 noon. Guests and prospective new members are welcome. Design Tips

HOME OFFICE INTERIORS

More people than ever are setting up their own businesses and working from home. Whether you’re working on a computer all day or making something crafty, it’s vital that your home office is set up in the best way possible for you. You will spend a lot of time there so it needs to be

48

inviting, inspirational and well organised to boost your entrepreneurial spirit. If possible, have an exclusive and permanent room for your work area. This increases efficiency and is a requirement to qualify for tax deductions. But if space is at a premium, you can separate an area from the rest of the house by a screen or other barrier. This reduces disturbance and creates a business-like atmosphere. Your main priority is comfort and practicality. Invest in an ergonomically comfortable chair and utilise vertical space with shelves and filing cabinets. Don’t locate your office away from the outside world. Have a window nearby for light, ventilation and the view. Add real plants and some fancy stationery to brighten your working day. The right home office design can reduce stress and improve productivity.

Huntington Memorial Garden Huntington Parish Council plans to raise funds within the local community to create a memorial garden exlusively for former Littleton Colliery Miners and for Huntington’s fallen war heroes.

Huntington Parish Council have expressed wishes to work with the local community to raise funds in order to move an old mining wheel back to the original pit site 25 years after the Littleton Colliery closed. The Parish Council plan to create a memorial garden around the re-sited mining wheel, exclusively for former Littleton Colliery Miners and Huntington’s fallen war heroes, so that residents can remember their loved ones in a place where they lived and worked. Names of miners and war heroes will be immortalised and etched into individual bricks forming the foundations of a fantastic memorial monument. To keep the history and heritage of the former Littleton Colliery alive information boards will be erected informing visitors about Huntington’s history. The project is being spearheaded by Huntington Parish Council who have provided many amenities for the local area including a beautiful community leisure park on the site of a former pit mount, and play park on Littleton Green. Now the Parish Council want to go that extra mile and create a space where local residents can sit and remember their loved ones, knowing their legacy will be remembered for years to come. The size and weight of the wheel means it will be

56

a massive undertaking to move it from it’s current site, on the Littleton Leisure Park, to it’s new home on the Littleton Green in Huntington. The project is expected to cost in excess of £100k, with Huntington Parish Council already having donated a massive £20k towards this great cause. To raise funds for the project former Littleton miners, or their families on their behalf will be able to purchase a brick that will have their name engraved on it. Each engraved brick will cost just £30 so if you know of anyone who has worked down Littleton Colliery and would like to have their names displayed please spread the word! The local heroes who lost their lives in both World Wars and down the Littleton Colliery will have their names engraved for free as a thank you from all of us in Huntington. The project will rely heavily on donations from businesses, grants and local residents who can purchase enamel badges, engraved bricks, benches and remembrance trees giving the whole project a community feel. To apply for bricks application forms will be available from the Huntington Coop Shop or The Littleton Arms. The deadline for the return of application forms is Saturday 30th June 2018. Visit www.crowdfunder.co.uk/ huntingtonmemorialgarden to make a donation and show your support for this fantastic memorial.

Spaced out in the Sixties A fantastic presentation from Andrew Lound

The 1960s was the most vibrant decade in human history, it had the best of everything – music, fashion, culture, art, you name it the sixties had it. It was also a time of great development in science and engineering with Concorde, Boeing 747, QE2, new medicines and of course space exploration. In a truly Fab presentation Andrew takes us on an odyssey of the 1960s space programmes in context with the period. A wonderful soundtrack, stunning images, and amazing video. It will be a trip!

TA K E T H I S J O B A N D YO U MIGHT END UP IN JAIL IMB work is unpaid, with expenses covered. It is interesting, challenging and absorbing. The skills required are enthusiasm, open mindedness, effective communication skills and the ability to exercise sound objective judgement.

Here’s a job which, on first impression, may not seem to be ideal, you won’t get paid, and you may get called out in the middle of the night, and it guarantees you will end up in jail. HMP Featherstone’s Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) is now seeking new recruits. IMBs consist of ordinary people who have volunteered to do this extraordinary job. Chairman, John Credland explains. “Every prison and immigration removal centre has an IMB attached to it, their role is to ensure that Home Office/Ministry of Justice rules and regulations are properly applied and that proper standards of care and decency are maintained”.

64

We are particularly interested in all people 18 years or over, from all minority and ethnic communities and who live within approximately 20 miles of HMP Featherstone. No special qualifications or experience is required, as necessary training and support is available. The task typically takes up approximately five half days a month however this can be flexible. HMP Featherstone is a Category C working prison with approximately 675 prisoners If you are interested, then either phone 0203 334 3265 or to obtain a paper application form from imb@justice.gov.uk also see the IMB’s Facebook page. Completed forms should be sent to imbrecruitment@justice.gsi.gov.uk Please quote campaign reference 795/Featherstone/2018

C A N N O C K S O RO P T I M I S T S P E T I T I O N TO E N D P E R I O D P OV E RT Y Cannock Soroptimists have become aware of a growing problem in this country - families who cannot afford to buy sanitary wear needed each month. A survey found that more than 137,700 girls have missed school in the last year because they couldn’t afford sanitary products. everyone who reads this, if they agree that the issue needs to be addressed, to please sign the petition and then to send it on to all of their family, friends and colleagues asking them to sign. That in itself will raise the issue throughout the country.

Six per cent of parents admit they have been so desperate to equip their daughters with sanitary protection they have resorted to stealing on the occasions they couldn’t afford to buy them, whilst more than a fifth of parents said they had gone without something themselves so they had enough money to meet their daughter’s needs. Women’s Aid is aware of the issue as are food banks throughout the country. Many food banks distribute sanitary products and there are some specialist distribution centres already set up. Cannock Soroptimists made an initial collection of products to give to Staffordshire Women’s Aid to be donated to women in the Cannock area who use their outreach services and are unable to afford the monthly protection they need. Soroptimists are looking into ways of setting up collection and distribution on a more regular basis. Obviously this needs more help than a local collection can provide and so SI Cannock and District has set up a petition on the Government Petitions page. 10,000 signatures will elicit a response from Government, 100,000 will bring a debate in Parliament. Cannock Soroptimists ask 65

The petition can be accessed on either the Government petition site or on the petitions page of the SIGBI site: www.sigbi.org. The formal wording of the petition is as follows: Cannock & District Soroptimists are asking the government to provide free sanitary products to young women receiving free school meals. Recent media reports have highlighted issues relating to what is being described as period poverty. 137,700 UK girls miss school each year in addition to putting their health at risk trying to manage without these essential items. Cannock Soroptimists believe funding is needed to end period poverty. Please sign and share our petition. Petition: Provide free sanitary products to young women receiving free school meals Cannock Soroptimist activities can be followed on their website: www.sigbi.org/ cannock-and-district, on their facebook page: www.facebook.com/SICannock or on twitter @sicannock Cannock Soroptimists would love to hear from you if you are interested in joining them with the work they do. Membership is open to any woman so if you are interesting in helping other women, locally, nationally and internationally please contact us and come along to a meeting with no obligation to join.

Jordan Ryan, Anshu Ramakrishna and Darren Ross pictured from left to right, with their Instructor Daniel Moffat at the top, have been working harder than usual for the past six months. Instructor Daniel Moffat said that “they have been valuable members of the club the entire time they have been training, and I am extremely proud to see them successful on such a big occasion. The TAGB’s Black Belt gradings are extremely tough to get through, so with 100% pass rate, its nice to know that we are helping to keep a high standard of Tae Kwon Do in our club”. OF CANNOCK This month’s meeting was the Annual Meeting where the secretary, Jill Gooch, gave a report to remind members of all the activities they had experienced over the past year.

Helen’s great efforts with Bring and Buy stalls. Members have made hats and scarves for children in the Townships of South Africa; We also donate toiletries to Women’s Aid for victims escaping a violent relationship.

Jenny had arranged a varied programme of speakers, and throughout all our meetings June has provided a raffle resulting in many members taking home lovely prizes. Win has supplied us with a book stall, encouraging us all to read more; and share our used books; and Susan has run a competition table.

Always aiming to embrace the aims of the WI, and in their national campaigns. Many members had attended a varied program of events through Staffordshire Federation W.I. And we all “Shared the Love” when wearing green hearts to promote awareness of all the things we love which could be lost to climate change.

Treasurer and Social Secretary Barbara Matthews has arranged some excellent trips and holidays which assist in making new friendships and offer the opportunity to socialise within the safe confines of a group of women who are caring and fun. Barbara appears to conduct all these events with an ease and grace to ensure everyone has a really good time and that everyone’s needs are met. This is the second year of the WI community project which now stands at £600 following

Our profile has been raised by many press releases. This promotion has been instrumental in attracting 3 new members this year: which will ensure the Club’s future survival as many other Clubs find their ageing membership declining. Under Mary’s leadership as President we have a Club to be proud of; building on the strength of a well-established club, we are well placed for Helen Hallchurch to take over and move forward to embrace the ideals of the wider WI community. Our W.I. meetings are on the second Thursday of the month 10.30am at St Luke’s Church Centre, Cannock. Visitors are always welcome to come and join us for refreshments and a chat.
