Senior Citizen’s Christmas Party at Wolgarston High School On Thursday 1st of December Wolgarston High

School’s Sixth Form hosted their Senior Citizen’s Christmas Party.

This is an annual event in which local senior citizens and residents of the local care homes are invited into school to be wined, dined and entertained

by the sixth form students. There had been much

excitement within the sixth form and students were keen to get involved in any way they could. Two

quizzes were devised, one fiendishly difficult on the Maths of Christmas (by Lewis Cross) and another

entitled the 12 questions of Christmas (by Liv Daley). The entertainments were co-ordinated by Molly Stanfield who played Dietro Casa on the piano

oversaw the mass catering for the event ably

assisted by Mrs Linney and at one point 20 students were actually preparing food at the same time!

augmented by the double acts of Hannah Walker

(piano) & Sophie Mosely (singing) performing White Christmas and Somewhere Only We Know and

Emily Fisher & Sydney Butler singing Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want. Dan Beales, the Head Boy, played Silent Night on the Classical

Guitar and then (as Santa!) played Classical Gas

also on the Classical Guitar. “It was lovely to see that our guests really enjoyed themselves,” said Sophie Moseley, “It was great to be part of this event, to give something back to others in the community.”

Santa finished the evening off with the traditional

raffle and our thanks go to the local businesses that donated raffle prizes to our student Joe Newman

and Hannah Walker that asked them for prizes. The Spar (Wheaton Aston), Pharmacy (Wheaton Aston),

Lavender Florists (Penkridge) and Russell’s Butchers (Penkridge) all donated wonderful prizes.

It was a delightful event and the school look forward Throughout the night the guests were serenaded

to hosting it again next year.

on the piano by Georgia Platt (our maestro) with a compilation of Christmas tunes which were

interspersed by her leading the community singing of 4 carols. Niamh Callaghan, the Head Girl,

Living Well with the Carers Association CASS The Carers Association and Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty worked in partnership last year to create a Dementia Friendly Strategy for Staffordshire’s beauty hotspot. They would now like to invite you to their second dementia friendly craft workshop on 26th January. After the success of their first craft session making decorations for Christmas, CASS would now like to welcome you all to their second fun craft session specifically designed for those who are living well with dementia and their carers. Centred around the theme of hearts, there will be an opportunity to create a memento on the day to take home with you. It is a brilliant chance to spend the day in a welcome environment, socialising with other carers and celebrating the natural beauty that is Cannock Chase. Mac Cock, Chief Operating Officer at CASS says, “January can be a miserable time of year, so it’s important to keep active and try something different, this session is aimed at making new friends as well as making a simple gift. Participants at our last event had a great time, and are more aware of what Cannock Museum and the Chase has to offer and feel confident to visit knowing that the staff are Dementia Friends.’’ Attendees of the first session enjoyed learning about how to shape Willow and created some stunning Christmas decorations to take away with them. There were plenty of volunteers to support everyone, carers and their loved ones, to make a simple homemade

12

decoration on the day, from stars, to trees and even wreaths. The next craft workshop will be held on 26th January at the Museum of Cannock Chase, Valley Road, Hednesford, WS12 1TD from 11am-1pm. Refreshments will be provided during the activity and the museum’s café will be open for visitors afterwards for anyone wanting to stay for lunch. There will be chance to take a look at the area’s interesting history courtesy of the Museum and with weather permitting; there are signposted walks around the area. To book your place please call 01785 222365 CASS would also like to invite you to try their monthly group at the Haling Dene Centre, Penkridge – CASS Cafe. This friendly get together allows any carers and who they care for, to come together for the opportunity to chat, swap tips on caring, make new friends and find out about other avenues of support. There are monthly speakers invited to the group to provide information about their services or talk about local topics of interest and health and wellbeing. We also sometimes have quizzes and singing all just for fun. Keep up to date with all of CASS’ latest news and events on their Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/CarersAssociationSouthernStaffordshire or on their website, www.carersinformation.org.uk

DriveSafe Lenses

As winter approaches, road users frequently find themselves requiring the use of their headlights, due to dark driving conditions. Extra bright headlights such as Xenon have become more common and drivers face an increased risk of being dazzled by other vehicles. This concern is validated by RoSPA, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, who estimates that over 40% of all road accidents occur in the hours of darkness. Driving in the dark can be even more hazardous for glasses wearers and drivers with sensitive eye conditions, as it can result in them becoming momentarily dazed and unable to adjust their focus on the road ahead.

18

At Carolyn Parker Optometrists, we stock advanced technology such as DriveSafe lenses from Zeiss. These help give your eyes added protection from glare and over exposure to bright light, maximising your comfort while behind the wheel, minimising the effects of car headlights and ultimately reducing the potential for accidents. DriveSafe lenses not only help with night-time drivng, but reduce glare from screens in an office environment and support the eye sight of digital device users. They’re available in your prescription in single focus lenses, bifocal lenses, and degressive and progressive lenses. Head into the practice today and see how you can benefit from DriveSafe lenses, or call us on 01785 713861.

2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed 2cm piece root ginger, peeled and grated 1 red chilli pepper, deseeded and chopped, plus extra sliced chilli to garnish

3. Add the onion to the pan and fry very gently for about 10 minutes until soft and golden. Add the garlic, ginger and chilli and fry for a further 2-3 minutes then stir in the Thai paste and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

1 tbsp Thai red curry paste 400ml can coconut milk 150g frozen peas 2 tomatoes, roughly chopped Squeeze of lime juice Fresh oregano leaves, to garnish

4. Pour in the coconut milk and bring to the boil then reduce the heat and return the paneer and mushrooms to the pan along with the drained vegetables, peas and tomatoes. Stir well and simmer gently for 4-5 minutes. Add the lime juice and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve garnished with sliced red chilli and oregano leaves.

was an amazing success and we’ll be doing the same again from the 1st February 2017.”

Taking inspiration from Roald Dahl’s classic book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Gary decided to give all of his customers - that placed orders

throughout the three month period - the chance to win their order for free!

“The names of everyone who placed an order with us over that period were placed in a biscuit tin, shuffled and the winning name was pulled out at random.” And the absolutely delighted winners of 2016’s

‘Golden Ticket’ were Mia and Ben Carter, who live in Codsall Wood.

“Mia and Ben were thrilled to have been selected

because they’d ordered £1700 worth of shutters.” Gary videoed the call to the couple when he

informed them of the win and uploaded it to his

company’s Facebook page (search ‘The Blinds and Shutter Company’).

“Anyone who watches the video can see just how delighted the couple are.”

with the addition of the new shutters. And you could be a winner too! “If you choose to order your blinds with us during our next Golden Ticket period then you’re in with a 1 in 80 chance of winning your order completely free.” And there’s certainly plenty of amazing blinds and shutters to choose from:

“We sell all manner of blinds, everything from romans and wooden venetians to vision and perfect fit

blinds. We also have a fantastic range of shutters

that look amazing in every home interior - whether it’s traditional or modern.”

The Mess Bistro in Brewood celebrates its 10th Birthday The Mess Bistro in Brewood, has become one of few businesses that has reached a decade of trading despite tough conditions. Overlooking the old market square, The Mess is only amongst a few other businesses that has survived recessions, economic down turns and volatile trading patterns thanks to its dedicated team who focus on looking after their number 1 asset, the customer. Owner and Brother and Sister Nathan White & Lyn Sims say they have seen businesses open and close, some as short as a few months, before realising that running a small business takes more than opening the doors and waiting for customers. The success of The Mess is about knowing who your market is and adapting to this as often as is required to stay ahead of the competition. “In the time we have been at the mess we have undergone many refurbishments all of which have stemmed from the feedback we have had from our most important stakeholder…..the customer” says Nathan White joint owner of The Mess restaurant. The owners of the mess take feedback very seriously and also value their team as being just as important as

customers. “It may be an old adage but treating your team well then motivates the team to treat our customer well.” So much so that one of their team members Pat Carter of Codsall was nominated by the owner and subsequently awarded a Queens Honour BEM (British Empire Medal) from Buckingham palace for her services to hospitality on 3 years ago. The Mess Bistro is an elegant and stylish coffee shop situated in the old market village of Brewood. The coffee shop has recently undergone a soft refurbishment and it holds 46 people for private dining. The coffee shop is open 7 days a week and will also open evenings for private bookings.

A successful December Our December meeting was a particularly enjoyable one. It was well attended and after being opened by the president, Sandra Bailey, we were treated to a

preview of the Christmas tree to be displayed as part of the tree display in St Michael’s Church, Penkridge.

We learnt, amongst other things, about the silver she used and the inspirations for some of her pieces of work. These included milk bottles, birthday cards and children’s work (from her teaching days). There was a lovely display of wrapped Christmas gifts, donated by members of the group, to be taken to the Katharine

New format of Penkridge Victorian Market proves huge success! Organisers of Penkridge Victorian Christmas

Market were delighted by the response to the

changes to this year’s event, saying it was their

busiest year ever! The event which was held on Sunday 27th November from 2pm to 8pm

consisted of a wide selection of craft stalls, fabulous food and plenty of entertainment, including two Choirs, a stilt walker, Morris dancers, a fun fair and of course Father Christmas.

Several changes were made to the event this year, in a bid to make it more family-focused, with
