Students Against Israeli Apartheid banned from U of M campus Bryce Hoye, staff

U

MSU council has voted to remove official student group status from Students Against Israeli Apartheid.

This past April 11, Josh Morry, Commerce Students’ Association representative and member of the University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) Council, tabled a motion to “remove [SAIA’s] student group status, and ban it from operating in UMSU spaces,” on the grounds that the group and events like Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) make self-identified Zionist students “fear for their safety” on campus. The motion passed 19-16 and resulted in the de-recognition of SAIA’s student group status.

IAW is held annually, on and off campuses across the country. SAIA and local affiliate groups host debates and information sessions, as well as disseminate materials and screen films critical of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. SAIA advocates for the imposition of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against the state of Israel by university campuses, on the grounds that Israeli dominance over Palestinian people and lands amounts to apartheid.

To successfully ban the group, Morry and others appealed to UMSU Policy 2009, which states: “UMSU does not condone behaviour that is likely to undermine the dignity, self-esteem or productivity of any of its members or employees and prohibits any form of discrimination

or harassment whether it occurs on UMSU property or in conjunction with UMSU-related activities.”

Policy 2009 is “very vague in its terms,” said Morry in an interview with the Manitoban, adding, “but it’s vague for a reason, because UMSU goes beyond the call of duty to protect minorities, to protect students at risk, to protect people who feel threatened.”

Morry argued that the nature of the policy assumes that a student group (like SAIA) need only be guilty of creating “the conditions where dignity or self-respect [of students] could be undermined” in order to be banned. The policy was invoked effectively and Morry managed to persuade a majority of council members to ban the group.

“We’re differentiating between Zionists and Jews [ . . . ] but I’m saying this is a point about Zionists, where calling someone a racist on campus violates the policies. It’s incitement to hatred.”

Morry later added that “[Zionism] is not a ‘political view.’”

“I’m not a supporter of the Israeli government [for the sake of this motion]; I’m a supporter of the concept of a Jewish homeland for the Jewish people. To call that a racist doctrine is not allowed.”

Ultimately, Morry has “national goals” for what might become of this ban but cites securing the safety of all students on campus as his first priority.

oolwich, a district of London, England, received international coverage on May 22 following the violent murder of 25-year-old Lee Rigby.

Two Britons of Nigerian descent, Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale, have been charged with the murder.

The alleged killers’ explanation for the murder was captured on a cellular phone camera and subsequently broadcast by British news networks.

The spread of the clip ignited tensions and security concerns across the United Kingdom.

British Prime Minister David Cameron cut short his visit to Paris following the murder.

The popular media portrayal of Rigby’s murder as an act of “terror” has since incited debate amongst both scholars and the public over

whether or not the act properly falls under the umbrella of that term.

The debate still continues as to whether the Woolwich attack was an act of terrorism or an act of human brutality.

niversity of Manitoba commerce up-and-comers, as well as some of Winnipeg’s most recognizable executives, seized the chance to meet and talk business recently when Chip Wilson, founder and former CEO of famed yoga outfitters Lululemon Athletica, was in town to receive recognition for his high-profile entrepreneurial achievements.

The Associates, a group of highranking business executives affiliated with the University of Manitoba’s Asper school of business, had announced back in January that Wilson would be receiving their annual International Distinguished Entrepreneur Award (IDEA) for 2013. The formal presentation, however, was not held until June 4.

The occasion was marked by dual events: a mid-afternoon speaking event, at which Wilson recounted his experiences in the business world to Asper students and faculty, and an evening banquet, where Wilson was presented with the traditional IDEA prize – a five-ounce pure gold medal, crafted by the Royal Canadian Mint.

wo weeks ago the U.S.A.’s National Security Agency’s (NSA) practice of collecting hundreds of millions of phone records came to light thanks to information provided by a former contractor of the agency, Edward Snowden. Seeming like a story of great importance to the public, the discovery garnered headlines for days. Some digging and frankly some rehashing of old news ensued. The attention resulted in the unveiling of the scale of the data-gathering net: major communications providers, social media companies, and tech companies of all stripes are sharing data with U.S. government agencies.

What has this to do with us here in Canada? Canadian Defence Minister Peter MacKay has approved similar metadata gathering schemes. The Globe and Mail reported last week that the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC) tracks data in a manner resembling the observatory practices of the NSA. Parliamentarians and senators in Canada do not have the security clearance necessary to access information on the scope and shape of surveillance activities in our country, which offers a good indication of the difficulty of uncovering the details of such operations.

Though only foreigners are supposed to be targeted by these programs, the term

“foreigners” obfuscates the borderless nature of the Internet and the true scope of the information that can be gathered from the metadata surveilled. “Metadata” is the term applied to records involving things as ubiquitous to our lives as IP addresses, email paths, and phone records. For many of us, tabs on our phone and Internet activity will provide a near complete picture of the information flowing into and out of our lives.

Even if the CSEC is not directly accessing the data generated by Canadian citizens, the government has remained silent on Canadian agencies’ ability to access the data the U.S.A. and other countries have gathered on Canadian citizens. The government of Canada has effectively failed to

deny the accessibility of information that our agencies should not have access to.

The coverage of this topic has not died down in the news media, though it has ceased to be front page news, nor does the coverage any longer make the top of the television news cycles. The pressure upon the politicians and agencies behind the information gathering needs to continue.

As a democratic society we need to ask some very difficult questions. What are the current limits on the level of information gathered? Is our government moving to protect Canadians from the programs of other nations? What role are corporations playing in these data-gathering efforts? What direction is the gathering likely to take in the future? What direction should we allow it to take?

It is clear that technological advances and adaptations are sorely outpacing legislation around personal information in our country.

It is not clear what efforts are being made to establish a new line in the sand when it comes to Canadians’ rights, nor whether the proliferation of programming dedicated to spying is being matched by the development of programs designed to maintain the integrity of our privacy rights.

They seem like the best of both worlds: they combine a gas engine’s efficiency at high speeds with an electric motor’s suitability for city driving. In fact, easily the biggest problem with a hybrid vehicle is that it’s not the one you already own.

Any new car is a significant investment, and hybrids tend to be more expensive than standard cars. Failure to launch First-ever football game at IGF leaves much to be desired on and off field Eric MacLise

I

nvestors Group Field opened with a bang last Wednesday, but it wasn’t an opening drive touchdown for the home team. No, it was more like a multi-car collision on the east perimeter, one kilometre from the merge to Pembina, closing the right lane 90 minutes before kickoff.

That misfortune would set the tone for the evening.

The infamous nine-point parking plan failed to eliminate growing pains, and the Bombers’ push for fans to take public transit, it appeared, was too successful. Almost a third of Wednesday’s fans—8,500 out of 28,000—took the bus; the Bombers had only expected 5,200. This led to longer wait times at bus stops and delays across the board as transit buses got caught up in the heavy Pembina traffic. Many fans frustrated with the jam chose to get off the bus and walk to the stadium from Pembina. Fans were still rolling into their seats well into the first half. As Twitter user @ Coach_TyStew put it, the Bombers now have “two weeks [until the regular season home opener] to fix something they had three years to plan for.”

The concessions were also in shambles. Lines were longer than at the old barn, and perhaps more concerning was how slowly they moved. While some of the disorganization and wait time for food could be attributed to it being the “pre-season” for concession employees as well, the problems also stemmed from the heavy traffic.

Concessions were understaffed; some did not even open fully because one-fourth of the staff were stuck in traffic, unable to make it to the game in time. Having an open concourse does allow fans to watch the game away from their seats, but not if their backs are to the field as they wait in line, with the crowds lining the edge of the concourse blocking their view from a venue held together by steel anchors.

The action on the field did not fare much better. With all the hype around the inaugural game at the new stadium, it remained pre-season football – boring, dull football with little on the line. On the Bombers post-game radio show, Doug Brown said that if he saw too many of these types of games he would be turned off by the CFL. And he was absolutely right – it was bad.

What made this pre-season game even less enjoyable was the performance by the home team. Buck Pierce went 0-for-5 with an interception, and

was hit three times. Speculation was that he would get a quarter of action, but coach Tim Burke quickly pulled him after watching Argonauts defensive coordinator Chris Jones pull out the blitz package on the first couple of plays against the injury-plagued quarterback – a questionable move considering it being the pre-season.

Quarterback Max Hall was a pleasant surprise, as he orchestrated a 10-play, 63-yard scoring play capped by a 34-yard Justin Palardy field goal (three of the Bombers’ six points), and showed some of the ability that made the Arizona Cardinals invest in him after college.

Rookie cornerback Marty Markett made a name for himself with blazing speed and a couple of pass knockdowns in coverage. He is definitely one of the young guys making it easy for Burke to put pressure on veterans in the secondary, like Jovon Johnson and Johnny Sears.

But besides Mike Renaud recovering one of his own punts, and an exciting 91-yard missed field goal return by Jameze Massey, it was a very quiet night for the 28,000 in attendance. Considering last year’s pitiful results, maybe instead of parking, the Bombers should have worked on a nine-point plan on how to win nine games.

The stadium itself is gorgeous, and maybe it isn’t fair to wait until now to mention that, but it is hard to appreciate the sight lines, improved sound, and increased leg room when it takes an hour to get in and out, 30 minutes to get some food, and the game itself is awful. Trevor Panchyshyn, a six-year season ticket holder of the Bombers, called the night his “worst football experience ever.” That is something I am sure the Bombers were not expecting to hear from fans leaving their $200-million stadium.

But the Blue Bomber front office has acknowledged that things must be fixed. After all, it was their trial game too. And just like adjustments have to be made on the field before the home opener against Montreal later this month, changes have to be made off the field as well.

I am optimistic that things will improve around the stadium in the coming weeks, but after a dismal football game, and while still stuck on the university grounds 30 minutes after the final whistle, I couldn’t help but think, “I miss Canad Inns Stadium.”
