News 11th annual Moon Festival held at U of M Coincides with Manitoba National Day reception hosted by consul general Quinn Richert, staff

raditional Chinese moon cakes, songs, and dances were all in abundance last weekend at the 11th annual Moon Festival, held inside the University of Manitoba’s Investors Group Athletic Centre. The festival, organized by the Manitoba Chinese Tribune, is Winnipeg’s version of a Chinese mid-autumn tradition, which has been celebrated in one way or another since the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE).

This year’s celebration was made to coincide with a reception at the Fort Garry Hotel hosted by the Chinese Consul General to Canada, Fang Li,

to recognize the 64th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. Such a reception, hosted by the consul general, has not taken place in Manitoba for 10 years.

Fang’s remarks at the reception focused mostly on China’s anticipated economic ascendancy and Manitoba’s role in Sino-Canadian relations.

“China has become the second-largest trade partner, the second-largest of both export and import markets for Manitoba,” said Fang, who also noted that in the last 10 years, “at least 5,000 Chinese immigrants have settled down in Manitoba.”

In an interview with the Manitoban, Fang said he would like to see more Manitobans venturing to China to pursue post-secondary studies.

“We want to increase the number of Chinese students studying in Canada, but also we want to encourage Canadian students to go to China to study [ . . . ] we have a scholarship program in China, where Canadian students that come over can have their studies paid for by Chinese universities,” said Fang.

When asked about his interactions with Chinese students living in Canada, Fang said that he has two

n Thursday, Sept. 19, urban design professionals from around the world will gather at the University of Manitoba for a Visionary (re)Generation conversation.

Panelists and audience members will discuss the question: “What should universities do for their cities?”

The panel is being held during the Winnipeg Design Festival (WDF), a five-day event promoting all things architecture and design in Winnipeg.

The WDF was co-created by U of M alumni Sean Radford and Melissa McAlister.

Winnipeg athlete files multimillion dollar lawsuit Kevin Kwasny, a football player from Winnipeg, has permanent brain damage as a result of an injury on the field. An alumnus of St. Paul’s High School and the University of Manitoba, Kwasny was recruited to Bishop’s University in Quebec in 2008. He is suing the university for $7.5 million.

Kwasny sustained the injuries during a game in 2011. He suffered a hit to the head, but claims he was told to continue playing. He was then hit a second time, causing cerebral hemorrhaging and a loss of consciousness.

Health facilities in Winnipeg treated Kwasny for the injuries. He regained the ability to walk only a year ago.

Although Bishop’s University has stated that its staff performed to the best of their abilities when Kwasny was injured, the university has not filed a statement of defence.

Slow down for the kids During a CAA campaign to raise awareness of driving safety in school zones, numerous Winnipeg drivers were found to violate traffic laws. One driver was speeding 27 km over the limit of 50 km/h.

In light of CAA’s observations, Manitoba Public Insurance has announced a $20,000 pledge to the Winnipeg Police Service. The Brandon Police Service and the Manitoba RCMP will receive a comparable amount of funding.

The funding is intended to increase law enforcement around school areas.

An unspecified amount, obtained from insurance premiums, will be used for the funding, although Winnipeggers are assured that the cost will be less than five cents per person.

“Drivers need to be smart and be safe in school zones and around

school buses, to make sure our children get to school without any danger. Just slow down,” said Andrew Swan, the minister responsible for MPI. The community garden was planted to support Winnipeg Harvest, a charity that donates food to individuals in need.

The Grow-A-Row program began in 1986 when a local Winnipeg family donated their potato surplus to Winnipeg Harvest. The project has flourished ever since.

This is the 18th year the airport has been a part of the program.

With the support of other community organizations, the garden has produced over 30,000 pounds of vegetables.

Bill 18 voted through On Friday, Sept. 13, Manitoba legislature voted to pass Bill 18, an anti-bullying law that has received mixed responses from the community.

The Public Schools Amendment Act (Safe and Inclusive Schools) states a legal definition of bullying, including the written, verbal, physical, or electronic forms it can take.

Subsection 41 (1.8) was debated at the legislature. It states: “A respect from human diversity policy must accommodate pupils who want to establish and lead activities and organizations that [ . . . ] use the name ‘gay-straight alliance.’”

Certain faith-based schools, such as Steinbach Christian High School, felt that this component of the bill disregarded their beliefs.

However, numerous school boards and LGBTTQ* groups ultimately approved of the bill.

Deciding to die U of M professor gives talk on euthanasia and assisted suicide Tom Ingram, staff

10. At Riverview Community Centre, around 50 people gathered to hear a lecture about death. The talk, entitled “The Great Canadian Euthanasia Debate: Where are we now?” was given by University of Manitoba philosopher Arthur Schafer and supported by Dying with Dignity Canada.

Schafer is the director of the centre for professional and applied ethics at the U of M. He has published prolifically since the 1980s on topics such as conflicts of interest, the use of scientific data from Nazi experiments, and the rights of panhandlers. Schafer’s research often focuses on medical patients’ rights with respect to end-of-life issues.

The lecture dealt largely with material drawn from Schafer’s forthcoming article in the International Journal of Law and Psychiatry.

Schafer began by discussing how doctors used to “[decide] what’s good for you rather than providing you with the information to make decisions for yourself.”

“I think medicine has come a long way since then,” he said. “It’s less paternalistic now.”

Schafer asserted the importance of patients informing doctors and family members of their personal attitudes concerning the end of life.

He noted that 30 per cent of people given the power of attorney for a patient make a decision against the patient’s wishes. “Part of the reason people get it wrong is [that] there hasn’t been enough discussion,” he stated.

He noted that very few people have advanced directives, or “living wills,” indicating their desires should they become terminally ill and legally incompetent to make their own decisions.

his past weekend the town of Clearwater, Manitoba welcomed visitors to its annual Harvest Moon Festival. Harvest Moon brings together musicians, artisans, food producers—and now over 1,200 patrons—from across the region for three days and two nights every midSeptember. Now in its 12th season, the festival has grown year after year.

The people of Clearwater participated in the festival, with many volunteering their time to help ensure things ran smoothly. The money generated by the festival helps the town directly, going toward the upkeep of the community centre and curling rink, the town hall, and a community-owned and operated restaurant, along with the numerous other economic spinoffs that 1,200 visitors bring to a town with a resident population of 68.

The festival, however, is only the tip of the iceberg. The moving force

International touring fees hurt Canadian music scene Smaller bands and venues hit hard by new regulations Seamus Hamilton-Pattison

T

ouring is a risky venture for any independent or smaller band or artist. The financial rigmarole required to book venues across a country, take time away from one’s day job, and then fill a van with gas to make the whole venture possible can be quite daunting for any band financing their art out of their own pockets.

Touring internationally presents yet another monetary hurdle to clear. For an international band to enter and tour Canada, any venue with a secondary purpose alongside music (i.e. bars, restaurants, etc.), was previously obligated to pay a one-time $150 application fee per band member for the band they were booking to enter the country.

Once upon a time, this was not a huge issue as all venues booking the band were allowed to either share the cost or let the first venue pay it and book subsequent Canadian dates without this extra cost factored in.

However, a large, unprecedented hike in these fees is beginning to make booking shows in Canada much more arduous for international artists, and is certain to hit small venues and their owners in a major way.

On July 31, this application fee was drastically increased to include a $275 fee charged per musician and anyone travelling with the band, (instrument techs, band manager, etc.) that must be paid not once, but now by any single venue that wishes to book a band from outside of Canada. This $275 fee is in addition to the aforementioned $150 fee, which results in small venues being forced to pay out $425 for each musician/tour personnel whenever they wish to book a show featuring a band from somewhere that could be as close as the United States.

Countless small venues across Canada could be hit with over $1,000 in fees (assuming the majority of the bands booked are more than a twopiece outfit) right off the bat without

even factoring in the inevitable costs of promotion, hiring sound technicians, staffing the event, and paying other bands on the bill.

As these new fees have clearly made breaking even after a show a daunting task, small venues will be naturally less inclined to book touring bands from the U.S. and abroad for fear of running the whole night at a loss. Consequently, the venue will suffer a loss of revenue if they can’t put on that show, and the band in question will likely throw the brakes on their foray into Canada simply due to an inability to get booked.

Finally and most perplexing, this policy does not even apply to every venue. Only venues that run a separate business alongside music and live events are subject to this drastic hike. For example, a small bar such as Winnipeg’s own Cavern would be subject to this policy, but a large venue dedicated solely to live performances such as the MTS Centre would not. In short, if a small venue chooses to or must provide additional services in order to be financially viable, we just added hundreds of dollars to their overhead simply because they wanted to bring some talent in from across the border.

Growing up in a country that has always retained immense pride in our wonderfully diverse, thriving arts scenes from city to city, it’s confusing and frustrating to see such an ill-conceived, exclusionary policy thrust upon the whole of Canada.

We also went out for dinner in Winnipeg every Friday, but now we’re checking out small-town restaurants closer to home, another $50 a week spent elsewhere. We’ve started buying our groceries and household items in Steinbach as well – let’s call that $100 a week. In a year, that’s another $14,300, for a total of $39,300 we won’t be spending in Winnipeg.

It’s a drop in the bucket, of course, and I’m not sure how much lost tax revenue that equates to, but it’s a form of protest and it makes us feel like we’re at least doing something.

And with us spending less time on Winnipeg streets, there is less of a chance we will be victimized again.

Is there a solution? Perhaps. In my perfect world, three quarters of the Winnipeg Police Service traffic gang would be reassigned to other police work. Senior management is always expressing a need for more officers; why can’t they just use some of the ones they already have for something more productive?

For change to happen, the citizens of Winnipeg need to elect a new mayor with new policies, and if they won’t, they should at least find a police chief who will stand up to, rather than comply with, the City Council’s witch hunt.

The police are supposed to protect the public, not prey on it.

and the future. This executive has done a number of extremely positive things over the last six months (our term started May 1). We are going to continue doing the things that best serve the interest of the students. This is a great university with a wonderful and diverse student body; I invite all to work together to elevate the quality of student life on our campuses.

ver the past two weeks, an issue impacting many Canadian college and university campuses has come to light. While the vast majority of campus frosh week events do

not include chants like those voiced at St. Mary’s University and UBC, the issues of consent and sexual violence are ones that students on campuses across the country must tackle.

Attitudes that excuse, dismiss, tolerate, or condone rape perpetuate a culture that exists both on and off campus. And while the students involved in these chants may not have intended for the words to carry such weight, students must recognize the profound impact this rape culture can have on our campuses.

So how do we deal with it?

As students, we must continue to be at the forefront of the fight against sexism and misogyny on campus. We must continue to educate on consent, and confront the issues of sexual violence and rape.

Some have said in recent days that institutions should re-evaluate the role students place in organizing frosh week, and that administrations should step in. This simply isn’t the answer. The reality is that sexism and rape culture pervade our campuses, and, until students and institutions do the work to shift this culture, these issues will continue to exist, whether or not events similar to frosh week occur.

Our entire campus community, including students, faculty, and staff, must continue to take a leadership role in actively challenging the systemic issue of gendered violence in our communities.

Students across the country have taken it upon themselves, as a result of their own experiences of sexualized and gendered violence in addition to that of their peers, to collectively organize a campaign addressing rape culture – this was how the No Means No campaign was born. This campaign was developed by womyn-identified members of the Canadian Federation of Students and led by local members on campuses across the country.

Year after year the message of the No Means No campaign has remained as relevant as it did over a decade ago, contrary to many common and current claims that sexism is no longer an everyday occurrence.

Students, by working together, continue leading the charge to cre-

ate long-lasting change for more inclusive, positive, and safer communities on campuses across the country. More and more campuses are integrating consent-based messaging into programming during orientation weeks and throughout the year.

We must continue to build a movement that proactively combats sexism and all other forms of discrimination, harassment, and violence on our campuses – one that encourages discussion, provides affirmation, tolerates neither silence nor shaming, and that builds communities better equipped to continue this fight for generations to come.

Operating Keystone XL at full capacity would support an increase of 36 per cent in tar sands extraction, the most carbon-intensive form of oil production currently in practice. As for the claim that Keystone will create new jobs, a study from Cornell University’s Global Labor Institute concluded that there will be just over 100 permanent jobs created by the pipeline. According to testimony presented by economist Robert Pollin before the House Committee on Education and Labor, the oil industry generates, per dollar invested, roughly one-quarter of the number of jobs created by green infrastructure projects.

Currently, it is unclear where

President Obama stands with regard to the pipeline. He has kept his position private and made only a brief and equivocal statement on the issue.

“Our national interest will be served only if this project does not significantly exacerbate the problem of carbon pollution. The net effects of the pipeline’s impact on our climate will be absolutely critical to determining whether this project is allowed to go forward,” Obama said.

The prime minister’s letter to President Obama suggests that Harper, who once referred to the construction of Keystone XL as “a no brainer,” is moderating his position on the issue and could be preparing to make concessions.

Until then, Keystone supporters and detractors remain embroiled in conflict between the desire for more jobs and the cessation of environmentally risky petrochemical production.

Beach party on the moon!

NASA-funded research detects lunar magmatic water Ian T.D. Thomson

A

ccording to James Lovell, the command module pilot for the Apollo 8 mission, “the moon is essentially grey, no colour; [it] looks like a plaster of Paris.” On the same mission, lunar module pilot Bill Anders said it was “like dirty beach sand, [ . . . ] with lots of footprints in it.”

There is a problem in describing the moon as a dirty beach: there is no water. This has been seen as one of its defining characteristics: it is a dry, barren mass.

However, this dehydrated description may be less accurate than previously imagined.

Findings published in Nature Geoscience on Aug. 25 confirm that there is much to learn about the composition of Earth’s only natural satellite. The research team, funded by NASA, has detected magmatic water on the moon’s surface that originates from the interior of the planet. This contradicts the notion that the moon and its contents are bone-dry.

The spacecraft used in this study was Chandrayaan-1, “India’s first scientific mission to the moon.” On board the spacecraft is the Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3), an imaging spectrometer that enables scientists to examine the moon’s mineralogical composition at extremely high resolutions. With the M3, Chandrayaan-1 was able to examine the chemical composition of the area within the impact crater known as Bullialdus in previously unseen detail.

The spectrometer was able to find large quantities of hydroxyl particles,

molecules consisting of one oxygen atom and one hydrogen atom. This provided evidence that the crater contains water that originated within the lunar surface.

Although this is not the first evidence of water on the moon, it is the

most concrete. Past samples from as early as the NASA Apollo programs contained lunar water molecules.

However, they were attributed to contamination by Earth or interactions with solar wind – a phenomenon that has been known to produce trace amounts of water on the moon’s surface.

However, because the hydroxyl particles absorbed by the M3 were found in the Bullialdus Crater, which is in a region with an unfavourable environment for solar wind, the scientists deduced that the particles were not from outside sources such as the solar wind. These particles were

consistent with other hydroxyl particles bound to magmatic minerals located deep within the crater.

The water that the hydroxyl is derived from is called magmatic water, also known as juvenile water.

It is found deep within the interior of a celestial body and is brought to the surface and its atmosphere through volcanic eruptions.

These findings have shed new light on the internal composition of the moon, the volcanic processes that may take place beneath the surface, and the formation of the moon itself.

While the detection has expanded our knowledge of the moon’s internal composition, it also provides hope that we may be able to inhabit Earth’s only natural satellite. Water and oxygen can be obtained from hydroxyl particles, which would save astronauts from having to move large quantities of water from Earth to the moon.

With all this being said, we must take into account that the presence of hydrogen and oxygen locked up in hydroxyl molecules does not mean there is a lot of water just waiting to be harvested. According to Carle Pieters, the lead scientist for M3, an area of the moon’s surface the size of a baseball field might only have one glass’ worth of water in it.

A day in the life: Doing the blot

Welcome back, dear readers! Last time we covered some of the basics of Western blotting. This issue, we’ll start getting into some of the specifics of the procedure. he Western blotting technique that we will be focusing on is a two-day process. In today’s issue, we will solely focus on Day 1 of the technique.

The purpose of Day 1 is to get the proteins transferred onto a membrane (a thin sheet to which the proteins attach) and then treated with a primary antibody. As I mentioned in the previous instalment, there are two standard techniques used: one technique focuses on denatured proteins, while the other technique focuses on natural proteins. Again, we will only be looking at the technique involving denatured proteins.

The first step is to isolate our protein. In order to extract the protein, we must lyse (break) the cells. We do this by adding SDS—sodium dodecyl sulfate, a detergent—in addition to other components. One important detail to make note of is that we have extracted all the protein in the cell. We have to use antibodies to detect the amount of the protein of interest among the mixture of all the proteins we have extracted.

Before we can begin to apply the primary antibody, we must first transfer the proteins onto our membrane. Two types of membrane are in common use: nitrocellulose and PVDF. For our experiment, we will be using a PVDF membrane.

Just like with the PCR electrophoresis experiment covered a few issues ago, we must first run the proteins on a gel. Protein gels are made from polyacrylamide rather than agarose, which is used for DNA gels. Depending on the size of the protein, we can create a gel at different concentrations to attain a specific resolution. The general rule of thumb is that the smaller the protein size, the more concentrated the gel must be to attain a greater resolution of separation.

Once the appropriate gel concentration is established, we can begin electrophoresis. As with DNA electrophoresis, the negatively charged proteins will run from the negative end (top of the gel) to the positive end (bottom of the gel). Unlike DNA electrophoresis, we have to coat the proteins in a solution to make them exhibit a similar negative charge, so that the only factor determining how far the proteins travel along the gel is protein size.

After the electrophoresis is completed, we must transfer the proteins onto the PVDF membrane. During this transfer, the locations of the protein bands after electrophoresis are maintained. This is important because it lets us use protein size to confirm that we have detected our target protein when we apply the primary antibody.

Before we can do this, the membrane needs to be blocked. Since the membrane has a high nonspecific affinity for proteins, the antibody—also a protein—will stick to the membrane and result in high background interference.

To remedy this, we add a blocking agent, which has to cover up all the empty spaces on the membrane.

Surprisingly, a common blocking agent is milk, which contains many different proteins that make it adhere well to the membrane’s surface.

When the primary antibody is added, it will only bind to the protein of interest, and not to the membrane. We then leave the membrane overnight so that the primary antibody may properly adhere to the protein of interest.

That concludes the experimental procedure for Day 1 of the Western blotting technique. Next time, we’ll finish the experiment by adding the secondary antibody and obtaining an image of the detected protein bands. We’ll also discuss potential problems that may arise in this experiment.

“With this act, I’ve come to terms with the musician I am, and I’m not necessarily the material that’s going to be on gigantic stages headlining festivals, but I’ve made so many great friends and I love doing what I do.”

W

hen we think of the accordion, polka music follows closely behind. “But I don’t know any polkas, much to some crowds’ dismay and to the pleasure of others,” says local musician Ingrid Gatin in an interview with the Manitoban. “I started playing [the] accordion six years ago and it has really opened my sense of musicality [ . . . ] The keyboard can be really hard to make sound dynamic. The classic female singer-songwriter is a stereotype that doesn’t really suit me.”

Gatin is a difficult character to place – geographically and musically.

After growing up in small-town Saskatchewan, her family moved to Brandon where she spent her formative years experimenting with the piano and classical music and vocal training. After coming of age and doing a little travelling, she came to Winnipeg with plans of busking for her supper. Of course, the keyboard isn’t an ideal instrument for this.

Enter: the accordion.

“I started by playing a few Beirut songs and then went directly to writing my own songs, and I think that’s what makes me in love with [the accordion] and creative with it: I didn’t do weird Ukrainian accordion lessons,” say Gatin, careful to follow up the tail end of her comment with a declaration of love for all things Ukrainian.

And so it was the impetus to find a more practical street instrument, paired with the recognition that many of her favourite bands at the time—like Arcade Fire—contained accordion-based elements in them, that inspired Gatin to take a chance and procure one of these intense, abrasive, respirating instruments from a sweet old Italian man with a listing on Kijiji.

Gatin had plans of pursuing an undergraduate degree at the U of W in international development studies once upon a time – a pursuit that was short-lived. She hooked up with local bluegrassers the Magnificent 7s and

decided she was better off plying her trade with the fiddlers and pluckers, joining the illustrious ranks of college dropouts like Kanye West and Mark Zuckerberg.

It’s a classic case of the budding Brandonite accordionist being lured away from post-secondary education by bluegrass and the prospect of becoming a professional touring artist, who is later contacted by the drummer of the Arcade Fire to come record part of her album in Montreal.

Gatin has lived in Winnipeg for quite some time now, though over the past couple years she has split her time between Winnipeg and Montreal – she recorded half of her latest album, 1000 Lives, at hotel2tango studios in the latter city.

“I got in touch with the engineerproducer who was also the drummer of the Arcade Fire, and he was interested in my stuff and wanted to work with me,” says Gatin, “He also played drums on three tracks [of the album].”

Though Gatin is still a sometimesresident of our fair city, she is also enamoured of the art and music scene in Montreal and is excited to open for the duo White Horse at Pop Montreal later this month.

She has developed a taste for the open road. UFC has stated its interest in having mixed martial arts as an Olympic sport, and the sport is affiliated with FILA, but, despite its worldwide popularity, it may be years away and may, like boxing, be restricted to amateur fighters. Beach soccer and futsal, two growing forms of the sport, have not yet been discussed as possible additions. The same is true with amputee hockey for the Paralympic Games.

It’s unlikely that any of these sports will be added to the Olympic Games any time soon; the IOC has recently placed caps on the number of sports and athletes to cut costs.

Nevertheless, new IOC president Thomas Bach has some great options at his disposal.

T

he University of Manitoba Bisons are 2-1 after a stunning 39-36 comeback on the road against the UBC Thunderbirds on Sept. 14.

After a pair of exciting games at home to open the season, the Bisons travelled to Vancouver to play the newlook T-Birds offence. After four years with the outstanding Billy Greene quarterbacking, UBC now turns to Carson Williams and Greg Bowcott under centre.

Williams got the start against Jordan Yantz and the high-powered Bison offence.

The Bisons scored the first points of the game, as Yantz orchestrated a nine-play, 90-yard drive capped off by a one-yard touchdown run by Andrew Barry. On the next two Bison possessions, the T-Birds forced two safeties to cut Manitoba’s lead to 7-4.

In the second quarter, the Bisons forced a safety, and Nick Boyd kicked a 44-yard field goal that put Manitoba up 12-4 heading into the second half.

With nothing to show offensively after 30 minutes of play, UBC replaced Williams with Bowcott hoping to spark the UBC offence. Bison linebacker Thomas Miles blocked a 38-yard UBC field goal attempt to keep the T-Bird offence off the score sheet.

The UBC defence, however, continued to put points up on the scoreboard.

After holding Anthony Coombs to 50 yards rushing in the first half, the UBC defence forced a rare Coombs fumble and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. The score cut the Bison lead to 12-11. On the first play of the next Bison drive, UBC forced a Yantz fumble and recovered the ball on Manitoba’s 39. Bowcott finally got things going for UBC, as he ran in a touchdown from 21 yards out to take the first lead of the night 18-12.

The Bison offence continued to struggle as the T-Birds extended their lead. Bowcott threw the first passing touchdown of the game to Micha Theil. The third quarter came to a close with UBC leading Manitoba 25-12.

After struggling through the third, the Bison offence finally came to life in the fourth quarter. Coombs broke off a 33-yard run that helped to set up Nick Boyd’s second field goal of the night from 26 yards out. Bowcott worked down the field scoring a touchdown that gave UBC a 17-point lead with 8:33 remaining in the game. It would be the last UBC score of the night.

Coombs and Yantz led a balanced attack on the Bison offence’s drive. Coombs

rushed for four first downs before Yantz hit Nic Demski on an 18-yard passing play that cut UBC’s lead to 10 with 5:43 remaining. The Bison defence forced a two and out that gave the ball right back to Yantz and the offence, who drove 76 yards in just over two minutes with Coombs scoring on an 11-yard passing play that made the score 32-29.

Another UBC two and out set the Bisons up at the UBC 53. Yantz had really found his groove at this point, as he completed two passes before connecting with Nic Demski in the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown that put the Bisons back out in front 36-32 with less than a minute to go.

The T-Birds had an opportunity to respond, but the Bison defence held their ground and stuffed Bowcott on third and one, effectively clinching the win for the Bisons.

Now 2-1 with the win, the Bisons turn their sights to the defending Hardy Cup champion Calgary Dinos.

Manitoba will travel to Calgary for their game on Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. You can catch the game on Shaw TV, as the Bisons attempt to serve the 3-0 Dinos their first loss of the season.

A season of change The story of Johnny Jolly’s improbable return to the NFL Marc Lagace, staff

Jolly realized his dream Johnny when the Green Bay Packers

drafted him in the sixth round of the 2006 NFL Entry Draft. From 2006-09, the Houston native suited up for 48 games with the Packers. In 2008 he earned a starting position at defensive end, and in 2009 he contributed to the top run defence in the league. His career—and the team—was on the rise.

But things were spiralling out of control for Jolly off the field. Jolly had become addicted to codeine, a medical ingredient found in certain prescription cough syrups and a Schedule IV controlled substance in the U.S. The drug is cut with soda and candy, due to popularization by Houston-area rappers, and is known as “purple drank” or “lean.”

Jolly was arrested in July of 2008; he was in possession of 200 grams of codeine, a second-degree felony.

Jolly’s day in court was pushed back until July 2010 and resulted in probation. Meanwhile, the NFL decided to suspend him “indefinitely” ahead of the 2010 season. That happened to be the year the Packers won Super Bowl XLV. Jolly watched the team he should have been on reach the highest of highs, as he continued down a dark path of his own.

He was arrested again in March 2011 with 600 grams of codeine. The second arrest led to jail time for Jolly, a six-year sentence. By all accounts, Johnny Jolly’s football career was over. That’s what makes Jolly’s return in 2013 so remarkable.

Jolly was released just six months into his six-year prison sentence and given 10 years of “shock” probation. Shock probation is a sentencing option reserved for first-time offenders whom the judge decides would be better reformed outside of prison.

The decision was a second chance for Jolly, and one that he has so far taken full advantage of. The NFL reinstated him in February 2013, and the Packers invited the 6’3’’, 340-lb defender to their summer mini camps, with little expectation that

he would make the final roster.

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy spoke to the media about Jolly’s return to the team after his three-year hiatus from football.

“He’s definitely someone that you know can do it, but this is more of a question about life and second chances,” says McCarthy. “We feel he’s gone through the necessary rehabilitation and training to get to this spot. I’m excited to give him this opportunity.”

Making the cut with an NFL team is hard. Making an NFL team after three years of addiction, rehabilitation, and jail time is almost an impossible goal. But Jolly was determined to get back out on the field.

“I’ve made my mistakes. I’ve learned from my mistakes, and I’m here today a better man,” says Jolly in an article on Packers.com.

“From the day I got suspended, I always knew I would get back, but I never knew when. I never thought it would be three years.”

During the pre-season, Jolly showed that he was still in fine form, even at 30 years old. When Green Bay made the final player cuts, trimming the roster to 53, Jolly received the news that he was once again an NFL player.

“It’s amazing that I’m even back in this situation,” said Jolly. “I have to take advantage of every chance I get.”

In his first significant football game in three years, Jolly started on the Packers defensive line in the season-opener against the San Francisco 49ers. He was awarded a sack on 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and despite losing the game, Jolly and the Packers defence held the San Francisco running game in check.

Overcoming addiction is a lifelong struggle that Jolly will carry with him. But if he can keep out of trouble off the field and continue to be a menace to opposing offences during games, Jolly may get the opportunity to make up for lost time – and find redemption.
