his issue is focused on women in our community—women who lead, build, and keep things moving. You’ll read about business owners, artists, designers, wellness experts, chefs, and nonprofit founders. Some are just getting started. Others have been doing this work for decades. What they have in common is that they’ve created something here in Jupiter, and they’re doing it on their own terms.
They’re not waiting for perfect timing or outside permission. They’ve opened shops, built teams, and grown ideas into businesses and nonprofits. Many have faced challenges along the way—health setbacks, career changes, family responsibilities—but they’ve kept going. Their stories aren’t loud or flashy. But they’re strong, and they stick with you.
This issue also looks at how women are shaping life at home—from design and real estate to wellness and style. These changes aren’t about keeping up with trends. They’re about choosing what feels good, what works, and what’s worth investing in.
What stands out in every story is how much care these women bring to what they do. Whether it’s working with clients, supporting other women, or mentoring the next generation, they’re not just building businesses—they’re building community.
We didn’t set out to make a statement with this issue. We just wanted to tell the truth about what’s happening here. And the truth is, a lot of what’s great about this town comes from the work of women who are showing up every day and doing what needs to be done.
Thanks for reading, and thanks to everyone who shared their story with us.

Jupiter has a proud history of women in leadership, beginning with the trailblazing Marie K. Cross. In 1949, Cross made local history when she was elected to the Jupiter Town Commission, notably defeating her own son-in-law, W.R. “Scope” Albright — a bold move that reflected both her determination and political savvy. Two years later, in 1951, she broke another barrier by becoming Jupiter’s first female mayor, serving three consecutive terms until 1956. During her time in office, Cross focused on strengthening town infrastructure and encouraging civic participation, helping to lay the foundation for Jupiter’s future growth.
Following in her footsteps was Mary D. Hinton, who served as mayor from 1980 to 1990. Hinton brought a collaborative leadership style and was a strong advocate for preserving the town’s natural beauty while encouraging smart growth. Her decade in office saw increased public participation in town planning and a
push for greater environmental awareness, which laid the groundwork for Jupiter’s focus on sustainable development.
The third woman to hold the office was Karen J. Golonka, whose remarkable 25-year tenure from 1991 to 2016 made her one of the longest-serving mayors in Florida. Under Golonka’s leadership, Jupiter experienced significant growth, but she remained committed to protecting the town’s unique character. She was instrumental in the development of key community spaces like the Riverwalk, Harbourside Place, and various park improvements. Golonka championed transparency in local government and maintained strong relationships with both residents and businesses.
Together, these three women have left a lasting legacy in Jupiter. Their leadership helped shape the town’s identity, blending progress with preservation and proving that women could lead effectively at every stage of Jupiter’s development.
When it comes to spring fashion, nothing captures the season’s soft, romantic energy quite like a monochromatic look in warm, neutral tones. This outfit, centered on a beige shirtdress from Self-Portrait, is a masterclass in understated elegance. The dress features a flattering, tailored fit through the waist, with delicate ruching and a flowy, drop-waist skirt that adds movement and texture. The crisp collar and short sleeves keep it structured enough for a brunch date, garden party, or even a casual wedding.
What truly elevates this look, however, is the thoughtful choice of accessories. The standout geometric handbag is a stunning complement to the dress, adding a pop of visual interest while remaining within the same soft, earthy palette. Featuring a harmonious blend of blush pink, tan,
and metallic gold accents, the bag offers both elegance and a modern edge. Its structured shape and gold-tone handle add a luxe feel that balances the dress’s softness.
Finishing the ensemble are the nude peep-toe booties, which seamlessly extend the leg line and add a contemporary flair. Their sleek, minimalist design allows the texture of the dress and the striking pattern of the handbag to take center stage.
Together, this outfit exudes effortless sophistication and thoughtful style. The tonal consistency makes it visually cohesive, while the mix of textures and shapes introduces depth. Ideal for spring occasions where you want to look polished yet feminine, this pairing proves that neutrals are anything but boring—and that when styled with intention, they can speak volumes.
In Jupiter and our surrounding community, womenowned businesses are thriving—and the women behind them are reshaping what it means to lead. From boutique owners and creative professionals to tech innovators and wellness experts, local women entrepreneurs are driving change, building strong brands, and fostering meaningful connections that extend well beyond their storefronts or services.
These women are more than business owners; they’re mentors, advocates, and visionaries. Many have launched their ventures from the ground up, navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship with a combination of resilience, creativity, and heart.
Whether they’re revitalizing historic spaces into chic retail shops or bringing fresh, health-conscious menus to the local dining scene, their impact is visible in every corner of our town.
One of the most inspiring aspects of these leaders is their commitment to community. Many are actively involved in local charities, mentor young
professionals, or host events designed to empower others. Their businesses often become gathering spaces—places where locals connect, ideas spark, and a shared sense of purpose grows.
These women also bring a fresh perspective to leadership, one that balances ambition with empathy. They’re creating inclusive workplaces, prioritizing sustainability, and redefining success on their own terms. Their ability to innovate while staying deeply rooted in community values sets them apart—and sets a powerful example for the next generation.
As we celebrate the vibrant spirit of local business, it’s clear that women are at the forefront of that energy. Discover why distinguished women leaders have chosen to build their legacies in the Jupiter area—and the prestigious industries in which they now lead with influence.

What drew you to the Jupiter area?
I’ve always had family living in Ft. Lauderdale and the surrounding area, but I didn’t want to live there. I originally came down with a close girlfriend and some boat captains and mates from Ocean City, MD, because they were working on boats here.
How did you get into this type of career?
My lifelong passion for an active lifestyle started in my early twenties. I found solace in fitness and as a means to strengthen my back while suffering from spinal injuries and scoliosis. This led me from classroom teaching to physical education and eventually to becoming an aquatics director. Along the way, I earned extensive American Red Cross instructor credentials and an ACA certification as a kayak/SUP instructor. Eventually, I became a NASM-certified CPT, golf ftness specialist, nutritionist, and more. I want to help others and still teach along the way. It’s the best of both worlds!

Additionally, the surrounding nature captivates me, from lush parks to scenic trails. The welcoming community makes it feel like paradise, where I truly belong.
How did you get into this type of career?
I first embarked on my journey as a makeup artist in San Francisco, where I was born. My passion for beauty led me to cosmetology school, and I was fortunate to travel the world, participating in fashion weeks in Paris and New York. Now, I’ve embraced a more laid-back lifestyle by creating an organic, nontoxic private suite. This space allows me to connect with clients on a personal level, turning my dream into reality. I cherish the amazing relationships I build and take pride in providing a safe, chemical-free environment where beauty and wellness go hand in hand.

How did you get into this type of career?
I actually got my first degree in architectural drafting and fell in love it. I went back to college for interior design and took a kitchen design class, and here I am doing what I love 28 years later. It’s something different every day, It’s not a nine-to-five desk job, and I get to deal with different people and different projects. Everybody’s tastes are different.

At the north end of Jupiter Island is a state park. I love going to the beach there because it is not over crowded, the water is amazing, and I can walk for miles looking for beach glass.

I work for a local non-profit in the field of early care and education and have been in this field for over 25 years, so my interests have always been in working with young children and families. I was a customer of Kid to Kid in another state and my husband and I were intrigued with the idea of owning our own business. My career in accounting began at a young age. Even as a teenager, I found myself helping friends and family with budgeting, managing finances, and assisting with small business accounting. It’s something I’m skilled at and truly enjoy, making it the perfect career for me.

I’ve always loved taking photos but it never occurred to me that I could make it my career. After a big health scare in 2022, I took a good look at my life and prayed for an opportunity that would be more creatively fulfilling—as well as the sense to recognize it! Within a month, I saw a post from my family photographer offering a mentorship. Something stirred inside me, I sent her a message, and the rest is history! I’m so grateful I found photography—I just wish I’d known how much I loved it 10 years ago!
Favorite thing about and/or to do in the Jupiter area?

I’ve been on stage singing and entertaining since I was 5 and instantly fell in love with the way that music can put a smile on anyone’s face. From the age of 15 I’ve created and established my own sound and band performing at everything from corporate and private events to city and community events, while saving open time in my schedule to perform at local venues where I can stay connected to my fans and community. Recently, I expanded the brand to include a tribute to the Women of Country music and a unique hat line.

How did you get into this type of career?
I was a stay-at-home mom looking for a way to get some exercise and a mental escape. I decided to try paddleboard yoga despite never having done yoga, and met so many fabulous people because of it that it became my weekly habit. I then attended cardio paddles for a different workout and realized how quickly the time passed, a sign of how much fun I was having. I took a certification course to become an instructor and the rest is history!

Or something others should know about the Jupiter area that maybe they are unaware of? My favorite thing about Jupiter is the stunning sunset over the Loxahatchee River. On a boat, driving over the bridge or at a waterside restaurant, you can catch a glimpse of the setting sun over the beautiful landscape for a perfect ending to the day!
What drew you to the Jupiter area?
I was born and raised in South Florida and drawn to Jupiter because of it’s laidback, family-oriented, small, beach-town vibe. I like that we have everything close by - beaches, baseball, shopping, restaurants but its not too metropolitan feeling.
How did you get into this type of career?
I got a degree in business, a master’s in social work but have always been a creative at heart. I fell into owning a store while I was staying home with my newborn son practicing therapy part time. I needed a creative outlet, something for myself and found out that Initial Styles was for sale. I love that owning a shop encompasses so many different aspects from business to leadership to curating and merchandising product and most importantly, to building customer relationships.
Favorite thing about and/or to do in the Jupiter area?
I love that there’s always something to do whether it’s a market or food trucks or a festival. You can’t complain of being bored because you can always hit the beach or an Abacoa trail - there’s always a reason to be outside. Don’t sleep on the Indoroni from Leftover’s Cafe.
What drew you to the Jupiter area?
Growing up in Ohio, and really despising winter, I decided to take a seasonal position in Palm Beach in the winter of 1981. I was under the impression that good paying seasonal jobs were plentiful, but dried up after season. Here I am calling Jupiter home, 40-plus years later.
How did you get into this type of career?
I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to purchase the Tequesta Stock Exchange in Spring of 2023. We have since renamed it to the Tequesta Exchange Boutique and are always finding ways to utilize the factory, like with our new brand, “re-imagined” in which we are taking vintage fashion goods and remaking them into new things like accessories, pillows and so much more!
Favorite thing about and/or to do in the Jupiter area?
We are in a very special part of the world that allows us to grow food all year long and the fantastic weather allows people to be active 12 months of the year. Enjoying the outdoors is at the top of the list for me and my family.

My husband and I were drawn to the Jupiter area as it felt like Jupiter had everything to offer as a big city does but with a small-town welcome feel.
How did you get into this type of career?
My career has always been in the corporate world, which I have done for the past four decades. What got my husband in the restaurant business was our great love of live music.

Jupiter has everything you can ask for, great restaurants with great food, live music, beautiful beaches but most importantly Jupiter has great people. We have met so many wonderful people in this journey, we are truly grateful.
What drew you to the Jupiter area?

How did you get into this type of career?
I discovered my passion for design early on, inspired by my designer parents and their creative influence. I began my journey working alongside my mother in Atlanta, honing my eye for residential layouts and trend research. I attended the Interior Architecture program at the University of Tennessee, where I earned multiple scholarships and completed three hands-on internships. Skilled in AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino, Adobe Suite, and more, I’ve been consistently recognized for her strong work ethic, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.

Living right off Center Street in the heart of Jupiter, one of my favorite spots is Blackbird. The food is phenomenal, and the atmosphere is just right—stylish, lively, and always a good time outside.
What drew you to the Jupiter area?
I’m grateful to have grown up in Jupiter, a town my family has cherished since the 1960s. With each generation—my parents, myself, and my sons—all graduating from Jupiter High School, we’ve carried on a proud family tradition.
How did you get into this type of career?
After exploring various career paths and academic opportunities, I returned to work alongside my dad, starting in the warehouse using the forklift to accept deliveries. Transitioning to the showroom allowed me to learn about hardwood flooring and develop sales skills, which eventually led to becoming Office Manager. Two years ago, I proudly became a partner in the business my father built over 36 years. Now, with my two sons also involved in floor installations, we’re ensuring the family business flourishes for years to come.
Favorite thing about and/or to do in the Jupiter area?
Jupiter is where I truly feel at home. Its pristine beaches and iconic lighthouse tell stories of beauty and history. The waterways invite relaxation, and the warm, friendly community feels like family.
What drew you to the Jupiter area?
Originally from Northern California, and after living 7 years in New England, I wanted to live somewhere with a beach and beautiful weather. After living in West Palm Beach, Dr. Marlin and I decided to settle down and Jupiter was at the top of our list!
How did you get into this type of career?
I actually put my career path on hold to help Dr. Marlin grow his practice and assist with the business side of it. My background is in the culinary and beverage industry — I am a classical French-trained chef, mixologist, coffee master, and Level 2 sommelier. While my expertise originally lies in food and beverage, I found that my skills in precision, creativity, hospitality, and management translated well into helping our business thrive.
Favorite thing about and/or to do in the Jupiter area?
I absolutely love Riverbend Park! Activities are endless: kayaking, paddle boarding, trail blazing, swimming and nature watching. When you’re there, you are one with nature. Riverbend Park reminds me just how beautiful our world can be and I’m always itching to go back and embark on the next adventure.
What drew you to the Jupiter area?
My Dad, a kayak surfer and paddleboarder, discovered Jupiter and put down roots. After visiting, I followed suit. The beach and small-town feel sold me. I met and married the love of my life, who proposed at the top of the lighthouse!
How did you get into this type of career?
After college, I worked with my Dad in the sailboat industry in New York’s Hudson River Valley. When I was 25, my seemingly healthy and beautiful Mom tragically passed away at only 48 years old from a sudden heart attack. I didn’t know it then, but this sad event would forever change my life. My passion became prevention, not only for myself, fearing this could become my fate, but for others as well. So, I attended NYU and graduated their Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. Since 1998, I have scanned over 50,000 people and I love every minute of it!
Favorite thing about and/or to do in the Jupiter area?
Snorkeling under the Jupiter Island Bridge, evening cocktails watching boats pass by at Square Grouper, and beach days with my amazing family.
What drew you to the Jupiter area?
I loved the small-town feel of Jupiter, not to mention the draw of the water and dog beach. I was searching for a change and found the most fantastic place to land. The doors flew open to me not only with new friends but a new business.
How did you get into this type of career?
I followed my heart and instincts, taking a leap of faith—with the unwavering support of my friends and son. Helping others, promoting kindness, volunteering, and giving back have always been core values in my life, and I’ve always believed in making a difference while having fun along the way. Building Chasin A Dream allowed me to channel those passions into creating a local charity that unites the community to support children who need it most.
Favorite thing about and/or to do in the Jupiter area?
Getting involved. It’s easy to live in paradise with so many incredible things around, but if you really want to know the locals and the things that make Jupiter so unique, volunteer, slow down, relax and enjoy the reason why you came here. Leave it better than you found it.

I don’t know about you but whenever I’m packing for a trip I can very easily over pack. There’ll be several outfits or clothing pieces that I just had to bring that never get worn. Now, I’ve learned to condense my luggage down immensely and even try to pack everything into a carry-on when I can. For women who want to move freely, skip baggage claim, and still feel polished on the road, mastering the art of carry-on packing is a total game changer.
Here’s how to pack smart, stay stylish, and keep things light:
1. Build a capsule wardrobe
Choose 3 to 4 tops, 2 bottoms, and 1 dress or jumpsuit that all coordinate. Stick to neutral colors with one or two bold pieces. Add a light jacket or cardigan that works with everything.
2. Pick versatile shoes
Limit yourself to two pairs. One comfortable pair for walking, like sneakers or flats, and one for dressing up, such as sandals or ankle boots. Wear the bulkier pair on the plane.
3. Think in layers
Instead of packing heavy sweaters, bring items you can layer depending on the weather. Tanks, long-sleeve tees, and scarves are all great options.
4. Use packing cubes or compression bags
They help keep things organized and make it easier to fit more in less space. Roll your clothes to save even more room.
5. Downsize your toiletries
Use travel-size containers for your must-haves or go with solid shampoo, conditioner, and soap. Pack a small bag with just the makeup essentials.
6. Add accessories
A scarf, a pair of earrings, or a bold lip color can switch up an outfit without taking up extra room.
7. Skip the “just in case” items
If you don’t know you’ll need it, leave it out. Most things can be picked up at your destination if absolutely necessary.
Traveling light gives you freedom, flexibility, and confidence. And the best part? You’ll always have everything you need right at your side.

In Jupiter, food is more than just a meal—it’s a mission, a memory, and in many cases, a woman’s work. A group of local women are building food businesses with deep roots and strong values. They aren’t just cooking or serving—they’re teaching, roasting, crafting, and mentoring. And they’re doing it with purpose. Meet two of them.
Denise Elrod, Blackbird Modern Asian Executive Pastry Chef
Denise Elrod knew the exact moment she wanted to become a pastry chef.
“It was part of my high school culinary program. It was a public high school trade center; a great school.”
“This particular day, we were going to break down raw chicken. I couldn’t do it. I told the chef ‘I don’t think culinary is for me.”
The chef walked her outside the classroom. “Maybe baking and pastry is more up your alley.”
She moved into the pastry classroom at the Las Vegas high school, and from that day on, she’s been baking. She now is pastry chef at Blackbird in Jupiter.
Her talent was recognized early.
“I took the gold for state at 16,” she said, referring to a professional pastry arts competition. “From then on, I stuck with it.”
Like many who grew up in the TV celebrity chef era, she networked her way up the ladder, working in some of the top kitchens in the country with noted chefs.
In high school, she was an apprentice in Thomas Keller’s bakery, Bouchon at the Venetian.
She began at the bottom. “The first day I was scrubbing coolers and scrubbing the grout with a toothbrush. I worked for $3.25 an hour.”
One of her early jobs was as a pastry cook for Joel Robuchon Las Vegas at the MGM Grand. Robu-
Blackbird’s Executive Pastry Chef Denise Elrod has studied under some of the finest in the world. She also won the grand prize on ‘Guy’s Grocery Games’ and walked away with $20,000 and national name recognition.
chon is notable in the food world as the only chef to attain 32 Michelin stars among his restaurants around the world.
The young Elrod didn’t realize the legend, however; she only wanted to further her career.
“I don’t think I fully understood where I was and what that trajectory would be. It skyrocketed my career,” she said.
It was a heady time to be an apprentice, she said. The hard work daily for hours on end culminated
in hard partying in the wee hours among the cooks and chefs. “People were snorting cocaine just to stay awake.”
She kept away from that part of the culture, and pushed to learn more.
She left Robuchon to learn chocolate work. She tapped Norman Love, another notable chef, to learn the work from his chocolate shop in Fort Myers.
“I started from the bottom, doing a scraping job.” It was menial, clean-
ing up benches after the chefs.
But she was dedicated, working 12-hour days, seven days a week. Soon she was creating chocolate showpieces for his shops.
In 2014 and again in 2015, she entered the American Culinary Federation’s prestigious pastry competition in Orlando, and won gold medals for her showpieces.
“I always push myself,” she said.
She returned to the MGM Grand when a plethora of top chefs were moving in. As the hotel’s assistant pastry chef, she helped launch top restaurants such as Morimoto, Tom Colicchio’s Craftsteak, and others in the three-plus years there.
In 2016, she launched her own artisan chocolate shop online, Chocolatebuzz. After Covid, however, she had to shut it down.
Then Guy Fieri, host of Guy’s Grocery Games on the Food Network gave her the chance to cook before a national audience. She walked away with the $20,000 grand prize for her twists on lava cake and tiramisu.
Elrod took a break in 2020, after giving birth to twin girls. Soon after, with her family — husband Levi, a son now 6 and twin daughters, 5 — she moved to Hobe Sound. They live 12 minutes from Blackbird.
At the modern Asian restaurant, she’s got an easier schedule than the hectic days in Las Vegas.
“It’s been this really cool collaboration of trust,” she said. She created the pastry menu for the innovative menu, and has been given free rein to do what she loves.
She talks with her spouse, also a pastry chef, about opening another market and online shop with artisan chocolates. “I like the balance of having my own business, and collaborating with others.”
She’s also been back to Guy’s Grocery Games as a champion. But results aren’t in just yet, she said.
Meanwhile, she bakes at home, presently experimenting with tortillas and breads. “I’m trying to branch out,” she said. She’s watching online trends.
“I’m doing high protein muffins and waffles; using yogurt and cottage cheese is hot right now. Hiding the good stuff.”

Valerie Herskowitz, The Chocolate Spectrum
Beyond the dazzling displays of chocolates and pastries at the Chocolate Spectrum in Jupiter, you’ll see a classroom where teens and adults are learning the job of chocolate making, cleaning, and interacting with others.
The twist to the story is that the setting is far outside the comfort zone of the workers, all who are on the autism spectrum, or are developmentally disabled.
“This has been a great experience for all of us,” says

She opened the shop on Indiantown Road in 2016, “It was on my birthday,” she said. A trained pastry chef, she had been making cakes and confections and selling from her home since 2013.
There were few if any opportunities for autistic kids after high school graduation, so she created the shop to put Blake to work, and soon found other parents who wanted to give their children the same chance. Herskowitz began accepting others on the spectrum who had graduated high school.
A few years into it, the casual job program grew into a formalized apprenticeship program.
“It isn’t just teaching them about chocolate and pastries,” she said. “But more than that, giving them the experience and opportunity to get a job elsewhere.
Technical skills aren’t the only part of the program.
“We teach them much more than just the chocolate making, but customer service and social skills, interacting with others. We’re constantly training them for customer service.”
With only a few students at a time, the training program was successful, and she soon expanded it to include pre-graduates. “I realized later on, why not start training some of the teens instead of after they graduate high school. Start earlier.”
The program expanded, and more than 100 kids have come through the program.
“They have learned business and organizational skills
on the job. Customer service, that’s big.
“We have five work skills that we teach: business communication skills, personal hygiene, stress management, customer service and organizational skills.
“We’re laying a groundwork for them to get a job elsewhere.”
The thanks from parents and other families with special needs children who recognize the unique opportunities come in every day.
The shop has become known in the community, and nonprofits as well as other businesses have bolstered her line of corporate gifts. They ship around the country through their website.
Along with growing the staff, she’s also increased her product line from truffles and chocolate dipped strawberries and pretzels, to cakes and pastries, and now, their hot item: the Dubai bar.
About 18 months ago, she also returned to high-end cake production and pastry work.
“Ours are very gourmet oriented. We always had minimal baked goods — brownies, cookies. I started reading what people wanted on different platforms and found modern cakes decorated with sophistication — no Little Mermaid birthday cakes. We use a lot of chocolate.”
Customers can come in the shop and buy just a slice and sip coffee, too, though it’s primarily set up for take-out.
She’s hoping to find a larger building to grow the business.
“We’re trying to expand. We want more space, and we want to expand our training program.
“My older son joined the business. He’s a behavior analyst. He specializes in working with people with autism and those who need help with social skills.”
She’s researched a chocolate cafe.
“When I first started putting together the concept of opening a shop, I went to New York and saw what was trending. I envisioned a chocolate cafe like Max Brenner’s. “I’d like to get back to what we
used to do a lot of, events such as birthday parties, bachelorette parties, and classes. After the pandemic, we restructured the space just to make products.
But sales and support from the community are priorities.
“We still need support for our training programs. They are very expensive. Our format is a very low ratio of instructors to students. In order for that program to continue we need money.”
Herskowitz still does not take a salary. “All profits go to the training program.”
She’s still in “season” mode, with Easter and Passover just completed, and now Mother’s Day orders rolling in. “Then it slows.”
Just now, the popularity of the
Dubai bar, a TikTok sensation, is boosting shop profits. It’s a chocolate bar filled with a layer of kataifi, or shredded phyllo dough, mixed with pistachio cream.
“They’re very decadent. They’re expensive to make,” she said, with costs of imported ingredients rising. She orders pistachio cream from Italy.
“It’s the one I like best.”
But, she said, “We’re having a good time with it. We have the regular big bar, and we’ve made them into truffles.
“It’s selling very well, so I can’t complain.”

They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend—but even the best relationships need protection. When it comes to fine jewelry, assuming your homeowners insurance has you fully covered can be a costly mistake. Most standard policies offer limited protection for jewelry— typically no more than $2,500 for theft or loss. For luxury items such as engagement rings, tennis bracelets, heirloom watches, or designer necklaces, that simply isn’t enough.
To safeguard these treasured pieces, it’s essential to either schedule each item on your homeowners policy or, better yet, obtain a stand-alone jewelry insurance policy. Scheduling requires documentation: a paid receipt or professional appraisal, and a photo of the item—preferably taken within three years of purchase. This process ensures your insurer recognizes both the item’s existence and value.
However, for high-end collections, a separate jewelry policy is often the smarter choice. Not only can it provide more comprehensive protection, but it also pre-
vents jewelry-related claims from impacting your home insurance record or premiums.
Equally important is confirming your coverage includes mysterious disappearance. Unlike theft, which involves evidence of a break-in, mysterious disappearance covers those all-too-common mishaps—like a lost earring during travel or a ring that simply vanishes without explanation. These are among the most frequent and heartbreaking jewelry losses, and they aren’t always included in standard policies.
In the world of luxury, details matter—and that includes how you protect your most precious possessions. Whether your jewels hold sentimental value, significant investment, or both, the peace of mind that comes with proper coverage is priceless.

Hair, makeup artist Christian Soul created a non-toxic, organic space after she had severe reactions to traditional chemical-based services.
By John Pacenti
Christian Soul – hairstylist and makeup artist extraordinaire as well wellness coach – worked Fashion Week in Paris, managing a team that made 30 girls runway-ready. She worked in San Francisco, Kansas City and plied her much-sought talents at salons along the way. She moved to Jupiter, intent on living by the ocean with a passion for surfing and horseback riding. Then her body – subjected to decades of toxic chemicals that permeate the beauty industry – simply said it had enough.
“I became chemically sensitive. My immune system shut down. Nobody knew why,” said Soul, owner of the unique organic Sand & Salt Salon and Head Spa. “I couldn’t work for two years. I was so sick, I could not step into a salon because of the chemicals.”
Now older and wiser, and equipped with years of experience, Soul opened a salon seven years ago – and recently added the head spa that offers a multi-step process to restore hair and scalp that have been exposed to harsh chemicals. Soul has curated a process to restore the scalp to its natural state.
“A wellness coach is a holistic coach that looks at relationships, diet, lifestyle, environment, the whole picture in someone’s life to help them with particular issues,” she said.
Salons like Sand & Salt, she says, hopefully will spur change. “Women understand now, going into a salon or nail salon, they are bombarded by chemicals. It’s toxic,” Soul said. “It is not good for us. And

the more we stand up, the industry will change.”
Soul’s story is more than just a journey from the fast-paced life of a traveling hair and makeup artist to battling a debilitating immune issue to owning a private salon suite where she can curate the perfect environment for herself and her clients.
Soul’s story also is uniquely female, one with an epic arc that speaks to the resilience of the American woman.
“We’re shape shifters,” Soul said. “We shift into mom mode, wife mode, business mode. We can do
that. We are built to do that. And I think when life puts pressure on us, I think we, as women – not all, but most – have the ability to take that pain and produce something beautiful.”
After a challenging childhood, Soul started working at the age of 13. A single mom in her early 20s, Soul has always been a healer. She enrolled in nursing school at the age of 25 but became inspired by Bobbi Brown, who spearheaded the naturalistic makeup movement and became an icon.
Soul bought Brown’s book and started practicing makeup. She

realized the medical field wasn’t for her and started looking for work in her native California. Soon, she was booking fashion and commercial photo shoots and ended up working during Fashion Week in Paris and New York.
Soul fell in love and moved to Kansas City with her two children. She easily found work there based on her portfolio. After her marriage ended, and with her kids grown, she was off to Jupiter, optimistic about living a slow-paced beach and surf life.
She took work in a salon that used traditional but toxic services,
such as chemical straighteners. And then it happened.
“I would have rashes and hives and migraines and open wounds on my face,” Soul recalled. “I couldn’t work for to years. I was so sick.”
But now, she has created a non-toxic, organic space on U.S. Highway 1 where women can decompress and just leave their numerous responsibilities at the door for an hour or two in a safe place.
“She’s just an artist,” said Jupiter resident Malise Sundstrom, a client of Soul’s for several years and a good friend. “She just has an excellent eye. She finds it everywhere.”
Sundstrom said Sand & Salt is a very relaxing environment. “Stress management, you know,” she said. “You get what needs to be done, but you also just enjoy it.”
This brings us to the head spa. The service offered, since November, combines massage, acupressure, and Ayurveda-based treatments. Some of Soul’s clients are experiencing hair loss, and
the Head Spa aims to regenerate growth by restoring the scalp to its natural state.
“There is a scalp detoxification, there are oils, there’s massage that helps stimulate hair growth,” Soul said. “Experiencing the water halo bed transports the client into a relaxed, regenerated state.”
Soul says her goal is simple: provide a safe, nontoxic, chemical-free space.
“Women now are being drawn to the more concierge, one-on-one, private, suite experience. They don’t like all of the talking, all of the noise and blow dryers and they really love the private and the calm.”
And her mentor, Bobbi Brown? She now has a home in the Jupiter area and has become a dear client and friend to Soul.
“She found me through her yoga teacher online, and I just did Bobbi Brown’s autobiography book cover. I colored and styled her hair for her,” Soul said.
“My mission is to change the beauty industry client by client.”

On Mother’s Day, I thought it would be special to highlight the special bond between women and their dogs, as some women do not have human children. The connection between women and their dogs is often profound, driven by emotional, psychological, and social factors:
1. The Emotional Bond: Dogs provide unconditional love and companionship, fostering a sense of security and trust. Women, who may face societal pressures or caregiving roles, often find dogs to be a wonderful social lubricant. Studies also show petting dogs increases oxytocin, enhancing feelings of connection, especially for women.
2. Heallth improvement: Being a dog mom can also help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, which can disproportionately affect women.
Interestingly enough, A 2019 study in the Journal of Psychiatric Research found dog owners, particularly women, reported lower loneliness and higher wellbeing.
3. Social Connection: Dogs act as social catalysts. Women can often bond with others through dog-related activities like walks or pet meetups.
4. Empowerment and Safety: Dogs, especially larger breeds, offer a sense of protection. Many women report feeling safer walking alone with a dog, reinforcing the partnership.
5. Caregiving Instinct: Women may channel nurturing instincts into caring for dogs, which their dog then reciprocates with loyalty.
6. Cultural Trends: On social media, hashtags like #DogMom or #WomenWithDogs showcase pride in this relationship, with thousands of posts celebrating daily moments.
I want to wish all moms, dog moms, and grandmas a beautiful and joyful Mother’s Day filled with special moments.

Jupiter is renowned for its exceptional golf courses, offering a range of options for enthusiasts seeking both public and private experiences. As a former Penn State golfer who later competed on various mini-tours, I’ve had the privilege of exploring many of these courses firsthand.
For those seeking public courses, Abacoa Golf Club stands out. Designed by Joe Lee, this 18-hole, par-72 course features rolling fairways and strategically placed water hazards, catering to golfers of all skill levels. Its pristine conditions and welcoming atmosphere make it a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Another notable public course is Jupiter Dunes Golf Club. This 18-hole, par-3 course with the nickname “The Little Monster” is a ton of fun yet will challenge golfers of all skill levels if the winds are up. Situated by the ocean on one of Jupiter’s natural estuaries, it offers picturesque views and a unique golfing environment.
On the private side, The Club at Admirals Cove offers a luxurious experience with 45 holes of golf, including the 18-hole East Course and three 9-hole courses at the Golf Village. Designed by Robert von Hagge, these courses
provide diverse challenges amidst scenic waterways and lush landscapes. Admiral’s Cove has hosted various tournaments including local U.S. Open Qualifiers.
Another prestigious private club is The Bear’s Club, founded by Jack Nicklaus in 1999. This exclusive club features an 18-hole, par-72 championship course that stretches 7,164 yards over gently rolling terrain, offering a challenging yet rewarding experience for its members. Right next door to the Bear’s Club is Trump National Golf Club which is a premier private golf club offering world-class amenities and an award-winning 18-hole golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus. From buyers to visionaries, women are shaping the future of Jupiter living—one beautiful, intentional space at a time.
It’s no secret that women are becoming a dominant force in the real estate world—and in Jupiter, the shift is stylish, serene, and totally self-driven. From first-time homebuyers planting roots near the beach to entrepreneurs designing custom studios inside their coastal condos, women are not just purchasing homes—they’re curating entire lifestyles.
In fact, single women now account for nearly 20% of all homebuyers nationwide, outpacing single men by a wide margin. And in a community like Jupiter, where coastal luxury meets laid-back charm, it’s easy to see why women are leading the charge. But they’re not just buying—they’re redefining what “home” looks and feels like.
Jupiter’s real estate market has seen a noticeable rise in female-led purchases. Whether it’s women purchasing solo, investing after a life change, or creating a multigenerational haven, the energy is unmistakable:
confident, empowered, and intentional.
These buyers aren’t waiting for the “right time” or the “right person”—they’re securing their futures and designing homes that reflect their individuality. In neighborhoods from Abacoa to Jupiter Inlet Colony, these women are putting down roots—and raising the bar.
The modern Jupiter woman knows exactly what she wants in a home—and it’s a beautiful blend of function and soul. Real estate agents and designers across the area are noticing a consistent wish list:
• Outdoor serenity — Think shaded patios, hammocks under palms, and lush privacy landscaping.
• Spa-worthy bathrooms — Slipper tubs, rainfall showers, and calming neutral palettes.
• Chef-inspired kitchens — Quartz countertops, gas ranges, wine storage, and layout for entertaining.
• Low-maintenance luxury — Hurricane-impact windows, smart security, and stylish flooring.
Community matters — Walkability, wellness amenities, and social connection play a big role in neighborhood selection.
It’s not just about living—it’s about thriving.
One of the most noticeable trends? Women are carving out personalized spaces inside their homes— rooms and corners designed just for them. These aren’t afterthoughts. They’re priorities. They reflect a deeper lifestyle shift, one that centers on wellness, creativity, and self-care.
Some of the most popular female-forward spaces in Jupiter homes include:
• Home Yoga and Meditation Studios Soft natural light, warm wood floors, Himalayan salt lamps, and greenery create a daily sanctuary.
• Creative Nooks and Art Studios Whether it’s painting, photography, or journaling, women are claiming spaces for their passions.
• Home Offices with Personality Stylish, productive, and comfortable—these aren’t cookie-cutter desk setups, but elevated zones with curated decor, ergonomic design, and meaningful touches.
• Kitchen Gardens and Outdoor Escapes Raised garden beds, citrus trees, and cozy seating areas bring the outside in, offering both beauty and purpose.
• The Modern She Shed A reimagined backyard structure for reading, sipping wine, or finding a moment of peace.
These spaces are more than just beautiful—they’re
expressions of independence, creativity, and care. They show how home can be both a sanctuary and a statement.
From purchasing to designing, women are putting a signature touch on Jupiter homes. Builders and developers are noticing, incorporating more flexible layouts, wellness amenities, and curated design options that cater to this growing demographic.
The message is clear: women know what they want— and they’re building it, buying it, and living it out beautifully under the Florida sun.
Jupiter has long been known for its natural beauty, community vibe, and coastal charm. Now, thanks to the vision and influence of its women homeowners, it’s also a place where homes are designed to inspire, support, and reflect the full, vibrant lives of the women who live in them.

In sunny South Florida, where coastal elegance meets laid-back luxury, bathrooms in 2025 are being reimagined as serene, spa-like sanctuaries. Whether you live in a high-rise condo overlooking the ocean or a sprawling estate near the Intracoastal, this year’s top bathroom trends reflect both sophistication and sustainability—with a strong focus on wellness and design innovation.
1. Spa Vibes, Every Day
Imagine stepping off the beach and into your own personal spa. South Florida homeowners are embracing rainfall showers, deep soaking tubs, and temperature-controlled steam features that elevate everyday routines. Freestanding bathtubs serve as sculptural centerpieces, perfect for winding down after a day in the sun.
Pro Tip: Integrate aromatherapy and chromotherapy for the ultimate wellness boost—think eucalyptus steam or calming blue LED lighting.
2. Sustainable & Stylish
Eco-conscious living continues to trend, especially in a region where natural beauty is central to the lifestyle. Bamboo vanities, recycled glass tiles, and reclaimed wood accents bring organic warmth while reducing your environmental footprint.
Pro Tip: Choose local, sustainably sourced materials to support regional artisans and reduce emissions.
3. Floating Vanities
These sleek, space-saving fixtures are a hit in both coastal condos and Palm Beach mansions. Floating vanities create a modern look while making smaller spaces feel more open and airy—ideal for South Florida’s bright, sunlit bathrooms.
4. Smart Tech Luxury
From smart mirrors that deliver weather updates to app-controlled showers and heated floors, high-tech touches bring convenience and comfort. You can even program morning playlists for a truly custom experience.
5. Biophilic Beauty
Biophilic design thrives in South Florida’s tropical climate. Add indoor plants, natural stone, and expansive windows to blur the lines between inside and out.

Hardwood floors add warmth and elegance to any home, but they need the right care to maintain their beauty and durability. With the right tools and techniques, keeping them clean and protected is simple and effective.
Start by using a dry or slightly damp microfiber mop to remove everyday dust and dirt. This gentle method prevents scratches while keeping your floors looking fresh. For deeper cleaning, use a commercial hardwood floor cleaner specifically designed for your floor’s finish— Bona is a trusted and highly recommended option.
Prefer something natural? Mix a few drops of gentle dish soap with warm water to create a safe, effective cleaning solution. Just remember: avoid excess water A mop that’s too wet can cause the wood to swell, warp, or stain over time.
Father-daughter team Mike and Ashlee have over 35 years in the wood flooring business. They are a local family-owned business. Visit contemporaryhardwoodfloors.com
In addition to mopping, regular vacuuming or sweeping helps eliminate debris that can cause micro-abrasions in your floor’s finish. A soft-bristle broom or vacuum with a floor brush attachment works best.
Just as important as the right techniques is knowing what to avoid. Stay away from ammonia, which can discolor wood, and vinegar, whose acidity can dull the finish. Steam cleaners and wet mops can cause serious water damage, leading to peeling or cracking. Glass cleaners and Murphy Oil Soap may leave behind residues or dull the surface if not properly diluted.
To preserve your floors, always stick to products made specifically for hardwood. With regular maintenance and smart cleaning practices, your hardwood floors will remain a stunning feature in your home for years to come.

In a sea of cookie-cutter kitchens, it’s the thoughtful details that set yours apart. For those designing luxury homes in South Florida, the use of reclaimed materials adds not only character but a sense of story and soul to modern spaces. Three standout features to consider: A reclaimed pantry door, a reclaimed wood range hood, and a one-of-a-kind reclaimed wood island.
A reclaimed pantry door is more than just a functional element—it’s a statement piece. Whether it’s a weathered farmhouse door or a salvaged vintage find, it instantly adds warmth and texture to your kitchen. Pair it with sleek cabinetry or marble countertops to create contrast that feels both grounded and elevated. The imperfections in the wood tell a story, offering a timeless charm.
Above the stove, a reclaimed wood range hood becomes a striking focal point. Crafted from old beams or barn wood, it introduces natural tones and artisan craftsmanship to your culinary space. In an area like South Florida—where modern coastal design meets laid-back sophistication—this touch of rustic elegance brings in a layer of authenticity. It softens the high gloss of modern appliances and invites a sense of home and heritage.
At the heart of the kitchen, a reclaimed wood island elevates the space with its raw beauty and bespoke presence. Each island, shaped from salvaged lumber, carries its own distinct grain, hue, and history. Unlike mass-produced surfaces, these islands are unique—no two are alike. Whether topped with stone or left in their natural state, they become both a centerpiece and a conversation piece. Functionally versatile and visually striking, they embody the perfect blend of form and function. Beyond aesthetics, these elements reflect a deeper appreciation for sustainability and individuality. They show a choice to embrace materials with history and character, creating a kitchen that feels curated, not copied.
In a region where luxury is often defined by custom design and elevated lifestyle, these reclaimed accents offer a tasteful way to break the mold. They’re not just additions—they’re personal signatures, turning your kitchen into a space that’s not only beautiful, but beautifully yours.
Maurice Jonker Jr. runs Maurice’s Furnishings, a familyowned business that builds custom furniture and cabinetry.

In an era where technology often isolates us—working from home, interacting on social media platforms and texting instead of making phone calls—Liza Sandoval recognized a need for real, in-person community. This realization led her to found “Chicks ‘n’ Paddling Sticks,” a women-only paddling group. Recently, I joined 17 “Chicks” for a picnic paddle and had the opportunity to speak with Liza. The group was as diverse as the paddle vessels present and skill levels varied too, from experienced paddlers and kayakers to a paddleboard novice, highlighting the inclusive nature of the group.
Chicks ‘n’ Paddling Sticks started as a simple idea born from necessity. Liza owned a heavy kayak that was nearly impossible to transport to various co-ed paddling events. She lived across from a beautiful little cove and decided to invite a few friends to join her there instead. What started with just a couple of gals quickly grew to 5, then 10, and soon 20. Realizing the demand for a women-only social paddling group, Liza created a Facebook group and named it “Chicks ‘n’ Paddling Sticks.” The idea took off rapidly and once the group reached 500 members, Liza’s husband encouraged her to purchase the domain and trademark the name to secure the unique concept. The name “Chicks” soon became synonymous with fun, friendship, and female empowerment through outdoor adventures.
For Liza, “Chicks” has been more than just a social group—it has been a lifeline. It carried her through one of the biggest heartbreaks of her life, helping her focus on others rather than her own sorrow. The supportive women in the group and the activities that kept her engaged played a significant role in overcoming personal challenges. For Liza, being on the water—or just seeing it—has always been soothing, bringing peace, joy, and a sense of freedom. This experience is the Blue Mind theory
mentioned in previous articles. As the group continued to grow, it became evident that members shared interests beyond paddling. To cater to this diversity, Liza introduced other divisions, including pickleball, bicycling, dance exercise, gun safety and target shooting, diving, fishing, golf, camping, hiking, yoga, international travel, skiing, and more. Today, “Chicks” offers over 20 different divisions to its members, accommodating both active events and more relaxed social opportunities. There are also less strenuous options like book club, arts and crafts, movie and theatre outings, and community service initiatives, allowing women of all ages and abilities to find their place in the community.
Chicks ‘n’ Paddling Sticks is more than just a paddling group—it’s a vibrant, supportive community where women come together to share their love for the outdoors, make new friends, and explore new hobbies. It’s a safe space where women can thrive, connect, and feel empowered. Whether you’re seeking adventure, fitness, creativity, or community involvement, there’s a place for you in “Chicks.” Becoming a member is simple—just

Wearing hearing aids can come with a stigma, even though recently it has become more widely accepted to wear technology such as Bluetooth headphones to listen to audio books, music and podcasts. Modern hearing aids are similar in design to these devices, just much more advanced in technology. There are a variety of styles to choose from to suit your needs and your look such as, in-ear hearing aids that look very similar to popular earphones. There are very discrete Receiver In Canal hearing aids that hide behind the ear and are virtually invisible, and there are custom molded hearing aids made specifically to the shape of your ear canal. The benefits of wearing hearing aids are significant. Here’s how they can help improve your life.
Constantly asking people to repeat themselves or straining to understand what they are saying is exhausting. This makes social interactions so tiring and frustrating that people no longer want to engage in them.
One of the biggest benefits of wearing hearing aids is improved communication and social interaction. With hearing aids you are much more likely to hear better in various situations, such as conversations, meetings, phone calls and entertainment. When you are better able to understand the conversations and improve your interactions with friends, family and colleagues you are far less likely to feel isolated or frustrated.
People with hearing loss retreat from social situations, leading to mental health issues such as anxiety or depression. Isolation and loneliness can have a profoundly negative impact on psychological and physical well-being and are associated with cognitive decline. Fortunately, wearing hearing aids can help prevent or reduce these effects by stimulating the brain and improving one’s mood and self-esteem. When the auditory cortex receives more information from the ear, it remains robust, helping you better understand what others say.
Another benefit of wearing hearing aids is improved physical health and safety. Maintaining your ear’s health can assist your balance and make you less prone to injuries and falls. When you regularly stimulate the biological machinery in your ear, it improves your ability to remain upright in various situations. Hearing aids can also help you enjoy your hobbies and interests, such as music, movies or sports. Because you can hear what’s going on, you’re much more likely to want to leave the house and continue to do the things you love.

By Dr. Bella May is for Mothers.
This month invites us to celebrate the feminine spirit, the creative and nurturing force that sustains life. As Mother’s Day approaches, we’re invited to reflect on the invisible labor women carry, not only as mothers, but as caregivers, leaders, and visionaries.
At Agape Healing Arts, we believe wellness begins with balance. Tending to the body, mind, and spirit with intention is essential. Women often give endlessly, which can lead to fatigue and depletion. In traditional Chinese medicine and other holistic systems, nourishing the yin, the feminine essence, is vital to vitality, longevity, and emotional well-being.
This May, we’re highlighting our Holistic Facial as a ritual of renewal. More than skincare, it’s a therapeutic session designed to replenish what’s been given out and restore radiance from within.
Each session begins with aromatherapy and breathwork to calm the nervous system and prepare the body to receive.
Next comes a gentle lymphatic drainage massage to support detoxification, reduce puffiness, and promote a natural lift. This step also benefits immune function and circulation.
We then move into Gua Sha using a rose quartz tool to release tension in the jaw, neck, and facial muscles. This traditional technique enhances microcirculation and collagen production, bringing visible tone and glow.
Red light therapy follows, stimulating cellular repair, reducing inflammation, and improving skin elasticity. Cosmetic acupuncture is then applied with fine needles to lift, tone, and revitalize the skin while supporting energetic harmony throughout the body.
The treatment concludes with our botanical Queen Bee Cream, infused with stem cells to nourish and restore.
This holistic approach not only addresses physical signs of stress and aging but also offers a deeply grounding experience for the nervous system, allowing the body to rest, repair, and renew.
Whether you’re a mother or honoring the feminine within, this is a time to receive. Throughout May, we invite you to experience this ritual as a gift to your whole being. When women are nourished, their vitality uplifts everyone around them.
Drs. Keith and Bella, holistic physicians and owners of Agape Healing Arts, offer personalized integrative care focused on your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

It was the shock of her beloved mother’s untimely demise that changed Dove Donovan’s life forever. “Her sudden death inspired me to go into the medical field and save lives,” she said.
Donovan, who lives and works in Jupiter, owns Island Imaging, a concierge service; providing echo, vascular and ultrasound screenings. She sends her detailed images and tests to a cardiologist on Indiantown Road and a radiologist in Port St. Lucie. They read the tests, then issue a report with results and recommendations in 24 hours, she said.
Donovan has 25 years of relevant experience and has been associated with Mount Sinai Hospital, New York Presbyterian, Montefiore Medical Center, Columbia University Medical Center and others.
“Mom died of a heart attack at age 48,” Donovan recalled. “She was not a smoker or a drinker and she was a vegetarian. She had no known heart disease symptoms. But something showed up in her bloodwork.”
“I got a call at work,” Donovan added. “By the time I got to the hospital, she was gone.”
“That was life changing, it changed the trajectory of my life and I considered committing to medical school,” she said. “So, I called New York University out of the blue and got a woman in the Radiology Department.”
“That lady said there was one spot left in her training program. The next day, I scored 100 on the entrance exam and I had the pre-requisites to enter the program.”
But it wasn’t easy, Donovan remembered. “I cried every day, the program was so hard.”
However, she persevered. And during that time, Donovan moonlighted for doctors who had private clients. That was when she got the idea for her first business, Sonographic Services.

Dove Donovan, owner of Island Imaging, where she offers echo, vascular, and ultrasound screenings that can detect cardiovascular problems.
“The doctors were so busy, they needed to hire more technicians,” she said. “I eventually employed 15 people and we had contracts in Westchester, Rockland, Orange County and elsewhere.”
Covid slowed things down and she still employs five in the state of New York, but her primary business is Island Imaging in Jupiter.
“The idea is to provide preventative care,” Donovan said. “I
wanted to get back into being more hands on. I love working with patients.”
Her clients pay out of pocket, because insurance does not cover most of these tests. However, she provides privacy, compassionate and dignified treatment and has eliminated long, agonizing waits for results. She emphasized she is “fair and transparent” with pricing. Donovan mused that wanting

to make a real difference in her patients’ health is what motivates her.
“I share this philosophy with doctors who are going into concierge practices,” Donovan said. “They want to work with patients, instead of throwing a bandage or pill on something that has already happened.”
She came to Florida in 2014 when visiting her Dad in Jupiter once a month. “I fell in love with the place and made it permanent in 2016.”
“This is about saving people,” Donovan said.
“One of my patients was a household name baseball player. He was in his fifties and looked like he was in perfect condition,” she said. “But his heart was dilated and barely pumping. I was shocked.”
“That happens a lot,” Donovan added, “A person can look healthy but until you look inside, you won’t see a small hole in the heart or malformed valves or a congenital condition.”
Donovan has sent patients to emergency surgery. “In one case, I couldn’t do a stress test on a woman, because she had an aneurysm,
she needed to get to a specialist immediately.”
Donovan will take equipment to people who are bedridden or prefer privacy, such as patients in Palm Beach. If five people sign up for her services, she’ll bring the equipment to their clubhouse.
By the way, “Dove,” is her real name.
“I was born in 1970 near in New Paltz, near Woodstock. My parents were sort of hippies. My brother’s name is ‘Sky.’”
Besides her poetic name, Donovan said her father also gave her solid business training and inspired her to go out on her own.
“Dad was in the yacht business, ran a sailing school and rented charters. I learned a lot about business from him.”
“Both my parents inspired me.”

Every great nonprofit begins with a call to action, and for sisters Bailey Hughes and Makayla Doolin, that call came late one night in the form of three traumatized children in desperate need.
A former foster mom and now adoptive mother of four, Bailey had already seen the many gaps in the foster care system. So when a foster family received an emergency placement of three children, foreign-born, trafficked, and found abandoned in a parking lot. Bailey and Makayla sprang into action. On a whim, they delivered clothing, baby gear, food, and even coloring books in the children’s native language to help bring comfort to an unimaginable situation. Over the following days, more requests came in and the sisters kept showing up.
From that act of compassion, The Hands and Feet was born.
Dubbed a “DoorDash” for foster families, The Hands and Feet is a nonprofit organization that delivers essential items within 48 hours to children affected by the child welfare system. Their mission is simple but powerful: to change the way children experience foster care by meeting their immediate physical needs with dignity, speed, and care.
While other organizations may offer similar support, what sets The Hands and Feet apart is their swift response and hyper-local focus. With a dedicated team of eight and a growing army of volunteers, they collect and distribute everything from diapers, hygiene products, and pajamas to strollers, car seats, and comfort foods, often the very things that make a world of difference during a traumatic transition. Their impact hasn’t gone unnoticed. The Hands and Feet received the Susan D’Eusanio Outstanding Nonprofit Advocates for Children Award through Florida Children’s
Bailey Hughes (left) and Makayla Doolin created The Hands and Feet.
First, and Bailey was honored as Palm Beach Atlantic University’s 2023 Alumna of the Year. The organization was also recognized by Governor Ron DeSantis as one of 75 named Florida Heroes, an honor that included an invitation to the Governor’s Mansion. Director of Operations, Ciarra Smith, has also been celebrated nationally, receiving the Rising Star Award at the Nonprofit Legal, Finance, and Grant Conference in Washington, D.C. Through compassion, innovation, and a fierce dedication to children in crisis, The Hands and Feet is reshaping what community care looks
like, one delivery at a time.

One of the things we do at our Golf Academy at The Club at Lost Lake is teach course management. This month we will talk about Course management. Course management in tournament golf focuses on planning each shot with a clear strategy, considering the course layout, hazards, and desired outcome. This includes knowing your yardages, selecting the right clubs, and making informed decisions about wind, slope and grain, to avoid unnecessary risks and capitalize on opportunities. Mental preparation, including visualization and emotional control, is also crucial for executing your plan.
1. Planning and Strategy:
Course Preview: Before you play, take the time to study the course layout, identify potential hazards, and understand the pin positions for each hole.
Yardage Knowledge: Know your distances with different clubs, including how your yardages vary based on factors like wind and elevation and temperature.
Shot Selection: Consider the risk-reward balance on each shot. For example, aiming for the middle of the green on long approach shots, or using a lay-up to a manageable distance on par 4s with tight fairways.
Position Play: Focus on positioning your ball in a way that opens up the best approach to the green, (using the correct angle at the flag) even if it means sacrificing some distance on the tee.
Club Selection: Choose the club that best suits the conditions and the shot you want to play. Consider fac-
tors like lie, wind, and pin position.
2. Mental Preparation:
Visualization: Mentally rehearse your shots, focusing on the desired outcome and the execution of your plan.
Emotional Control: Stay calm and focused under pressure, especially when making key decisions.
Positive Mindset: Maintain a positive attitude and believe in your ability to execute your plan.
3. Key Strategies:
Prioritize Accuracy: In tournament golf, accuracy is often more important than distance. Aim for the target area and avoid taking unnecessary risks.
Avoid Hazards: Identify and avoid hazards as much as possible. Plan your shots to keep the ball on the fairway. Master the Short Game: Develop a strong short game, including chipping, pitching, and putting, to capitalize on opportunities and avoid big numbers.
Learn from Mistakes:
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Analyze your errors and learn from them to improve your game. Take notes.
Embrace Technology:
Utilize technology like GPS systems and rangefinders to enhance your decision-making and improve your course management skills.
