The Hearsays

rekindle old bandmate magic with new music and upcoming album

Rocky Turen and Rhyms Agot of The MaineStream released their debut experimental album, “Side Effects of Youth’s Mental Breakdown,” in 2023. This album featured 10 emotionally charged songs that they self-produced. This year, they brought in drummer Mike Manubay, an old bandmate of Turen, and returned to Amadeus Music Co. to create new music.

Their first single, “Sunflower Bloom,” was released on May 2, 2024, and quickly captivated listeners. Rocky Turen explained with The Global Filipino Magazine that the song was inspired by the musical styles of The 1975 and Harry

Styles, using a mix of synths and voice changers. Their second single, “Laya,” features an old-style pop rock sound with blues elements, reflecting Turen’s experiences working on a cruise ship.

Manubay expressed his happiness about rejoining the band, highlighting their shared dreams and the process of reworking old and unreleased songs with new arrangements. Agot remains a key collaborator, with Turen praising his passion and talent.

The Hearsays are set to release two more singles, “T.Y.M” (Titig, Yakap, Matunaw), a poignant love song, and “Paalam, Sa

Tabi Ko,” a melancholic track about long-distance relationships and the experiences of overseas Filipino workers.

The band plans to release their first full album and hopes to organize a launch concert and major gigs by the end of the year. They encourage fans to follow their music platforms and social media for updates. Turen expressed gratitude to their supporters, including Amadeus Music Co. and The Global Filipino Magazine.

The Hearsays are excited to continue sharing their music and connecting with their audience.

Mary Rose Flores Marcellano

Rising above: From banana and kamote vendor to CFO in Dubai

The journey of working abroad often begins with a search for bigger opportunities and a better future for one’s family. This is precisely the case for Mary Rose Flores Marcellano, a 48-year-old Filipina who has dedicated 16 years of her life to building a successful career in the UAE. Her story resonates with many overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who leave their homeland in pursuit of growth and stability.

Mary Rose currently holds the positions of Chief Finance Officer (CFO) and Human Resources (HR) Director at Ichiryu Ramen House and Tako Ichiban House.

Reflecting on her path, she shares with The Global Filipino Magazine, “Numbers have fascinated me since I was young, as they convey a narrative if you pay close attention. Every penny matters, no matter how big or small. That is why financial management is crucial to any business; it is a key factor in propelling the business forward and beyond.”

Her roles involve meticulous financial management and overseeing HR operations, vital components in the restaurant industry.

Mary Rose’s career began in the Philippines, where she graduated from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Her first job was as a System Analyst, but she soon transitioned to a seven-year stint as a Store Manager at Jollibee Foods

Corporation. Seeking greater prospects, she moved to the UAE in 2006 with her husband, Allan Jay Marcellano, aiming to provide a better future for their two children, Jyrus and Jade.

“We wanted to shield them from the struggles we personally faced growing up,” she explains.

Upon her arrival in the UAE, Mary Rose faced the typical challenges of an expatriate. She started as a Sales Person at Dragon Mart, then worked as a Receptionist at a hotel, and later as a Secretary at a travel agency. Her perseverance paid off when she secured a role as a Finance Manager at Dubai Silicon Oasis. This opportunity paved the way for a 14-year tenure at an event agency, where she held various positions including Finance Manager, HR Manager, Office Manager, PRO, and Personal Assistant.

The allure of working overseas extends beyond financial benefits for Mary Rose.

“Firstly, the financial benefits such as higher salaries, lower living expenses, and expatriate perks are appealing. Additionally, there is the chance for cultural immersion; residing in a foreign land allows for interaction with a new culture, learning new languages, and expanding one’s perspective. Lastly, living in a different country opens up travel possibilities, providing opportunities to explore neighboring regions and enriching both personal and professional life with diverse travel experiences,” she shares.

Mary Rose’s journey was not without its struggles. Losing her mother at the tender age of nine was a significant and heart-wrenching challenge.

“My family, especially my father, and I had to work together to overcome the

hardship,” she recalls.

To support her family, she sold bananas and sweet potatoes on the street and often went to school without any money, relying on free rides from kind-hearted drivers.

“Life presents many challenges, but the important thing is how we learn from them,” she emphasizes.

Looking ahead, Mary Rose is focused on expanding their Japanese restaurants, aiming to establish Ichiryu Ramen House and Tako Ichiban House as the premier Ramen House not just in the UAE, but globally.

Her mantra in life is a powerful reflection of her journey: “You hold the power to chase after any dream you fancy, and the secret to achieving epic victories is to be head over heels in love with what you’re doing. Age is just a number – it should not hinder you; instead, it should inspire you to create new plans and imagine exciting adventures.”

For fellow kabayans who are struggling abroad, Mary Rose offers valuable advice: “Stay connected with home. Maintain relationships through regular communication with family and friends to combat loneliness and homesickness. Build a support network. Connect with expatriates or local communities for support, advice, and a sense of belonging. Prioritize mental and physical health. Remember that health is wealth and take care of both aspects. Stay informed and prepared. Understand legal and financial matters, including visa requirements, work permits, and obligations in both your home and host countries. Have emergency plans. Know local emergency numbers, prepare for natural disasters, and keep important documents easily accessible.”

Daniella Alessandra

P. Daniel

Dubai-based 9-year-old Filipina dancer triumphs at Netherlands ballet competition

In a world where Filipino adults have been making their mark with talent and dedication, young Filipino kids are following suit, raising the Philippine flag even higher. One such remarkable example is Daniella Alessandra P. Daniel, a 9-year-old Filipina, who showcased her incredible talent at the Global Dance Open (GDO) Finals 2024 in the Netherlands from July 9 to July 19, 2024.

Daniella, the lone representative from the Philippines, made it to the top 10 in the Mini Solo Ballet Repertoire category and won the crowd favorite award for her stunning performance of the Ballet Blue Bird variation. This prestigious international dance competition featured over 1,500 dancers from more than 30 countries, making Daniella’s achievements even more noteworthy.

Daniella’s journey in ballet began at the tender age of three at the Ballet Center in Jumeirah. Recalling her first ballet recital, her parents fondly remember her enthusiasm and passion. “We can still vividly remember her first ballet recital group performance. After their dance, when the rest of the dancers left the stage, she remained right there. While the crowd was cheering, she started waving to the audience, enjoying the moment. From there, we realized her passion to perform,” her parents shared.

An upcoming Grade 5 student at The Philippine School Dubai, Daniella balances her academics with a rigorous

dance schedule and other extracurricular activities. She is an active member of the Drums and Lyre Corps and shares her talent with her church community at St. Michael The Archangel in Sharjah.

Managing Daniella’s dance practice alongside school and other activities is no easy feat. Her parents described their busy weekends: “Honestly, our weekends are completely busy and full. We start our Saturday morning by going to St. Michael The Archangel Church in Sharjah for her Catechism class and attending mass. After church, we’ll go straight to her ballet class/practice. By Sunday, we need to get up early as well for her Drums and Lyre Corps practice which starts at 7 am. In the event of any conflicting activities, then she has to attend during weekdays after school.”

Preparation for the GDO Finals was intense. “As early as January, she participated in the qualifying round for the GDO. By March, we started working with her dances with the help of various teachers. We adapted the idea of hybrid setup, having her online sessions at the same time with face-to-face practice. By then, Daniella’s average practice time was at least five hours a week,” they explained. They credited the Dance

Birmingham, England,” her parents said.

Despite living overseas for many years, Daniella’s Filipino heritage profoundly influences her dance journey. “Eventhough we reside overseas for many years, she grew up loving the Philippines. She is fascinated about the Phillippine history. In fact, when we went for vacation last year, we visited a lot of historical places and museums,” they noted. Daniella’s large, supportive family in the Philippines has also played a crucial role in her success.

The moment Daniella was named the crowd favorite for her Ballet Blue Bird performance was unforgettable for her family. “Making it to the top 9, with the grade of 90% was already an achievement for us. Voted as the audience favorite performance is like a cherry on top,” they expressed.

Daniella’s involvement in the Drums and Lyre Corps and her church activities has further helped her develop as a performer. “Her participation in TPS DLC and church activities has been a platform to build her confidence in performing in front of a huge crowd. The TPS DLC performed in many events and activities that helped her to get more exposure.

Dance with Lina in Makati for their invaluable support.

Competing internationally has significantly boosted Daniella’s confidence and personal growth. “She is really excited to represent the Philippines on the global stage such as GDO. Her long preparation, practice, motivation, and support from our families and friends really helped boost her confidence and to stand tall among the other participants from different countries. She also gained a lot of friends during the competition from all over the world. Actually, she is already looking forward to joining next year’s GDO competition to be held in

While with our Church, she was able to perform her routine during the Family Feast 2024 Talent Show,” they added.

Looking ahead, Daniella’s parents emphasize the importance of balancing her studies with her passion for ballet. “As a parent and as agreed with my wife, studies will come first for Daniella, so we plan accordingly her ballet and other activities and that will or should not affect her studies. But, as we can see, she really loves to perform and transform into something wonderful whenever she is on the stage. So whatever she wants to be when she grows up, we will always love and support her.”

Factory in Cavite, Aspire Ballet Dubai, and

Adistinguished career in marketing, distribution, and sales within the wellness and real estate industries has made Racquel Buensuceso a symbol of success and resilience. Her leadership and achievements have culminated in her current role as the President and CEO of Gr8life International Corporation, a company she founded with branches in the Philippines and Dubai.

Racquel’s journey abroad began four years ago when she opened a branch of Gr8life in Dubai in 2020. This move was driven by her extensive experience in marketing abroad, which highlighted the immense potential of the international

market for Gr8life’s wellness products.

“My experience marketing abroad has opened my eyes to the ambition, passion, work ethic, needs, and wants of Filipinos overseas and locals,” she explains to The Global Filipino Magazine.

This global vision aligns with Gr8life’s mission to showcase the quality of Filipino products to the world, serving as a way to give back to her homeland.

Before establishing Gr8life, Racquel excelled in various roles. She consistently ranked as a top real estate broker and earned multiple awards in network marketing. Her commitment to helping

others extends beyond her company. She launched the “Yes, We Care” campaign to raise awareness about women’s health and organized several medical missions in the Philippines. These missions provided on-site tests, consultations with doctors, medicines, and Gr8life products to those in need.

“I believe that it is important that the carers of our families are also taken care of,” she emphasizes, highlighting her dedication to community welfare.

Racquel’s passion for her work is evident in her leadership at Gr8life. She finds immense satisfaction in empowering her team and customers.

Working overseas has been a source of inspiration and growth for Racquel. She enjoys traveling, connecting with diverse cultures, and gaining new perspectives.

“From savoring the local cuisine to immersing myself in their way of life, I find endless inspiration,” she shares.

These experiences not only broaden her horizon but also provide valuable insights for overcoming challenges. Meeting fellow Filipinos and hearing their stories energizes her and reinforces her belief in Gr8life’s potential to empower them.

Racquel’s journey to success was not without struggles. Her upbringing was not privileged, which fueled her ambition from a young age. However, her relentless pursuit of quick results led to poor decisions and financial setbacks.

“I realized that calculated risks are essential, but blind ambition can be detrimental,” she reflects.

A major turning point in her life came in 2012 when she underwent spinal surgery. This experience reinforced her belief that health is the foundation of wealth and ignited her passion for promoting wellness, a core focus of Gr8life.

Support from family, friends, and her unwavering faith were crucial during challenging times. Her husband, in particular, has been a pillar of strength. These experiences have shaped Racquel into a resilient leader who balances aggressive pursuit with strategic thinking.

“Health is the foundation of wealth,” she affirms, emphasizing the importance of well-being in achieving success.

Looking ahead, Racquel’s vision for Gr8life is expansive. She is committed to promoting health and wellness throughout the UAE and beyond.

“If God willing, I want to share the business and the products to other countries as well,” she states.

Her ultimate goal is to bring Gr8life’s transformative products to a global audience, continuing to empower

people’s well-being.

For fellow Filipinos struggling abroad, Racquel offers heartfelt advice.

“It’s not always easy being away from home, but remember the dreams that brought you here in the first place,” she encourages.

She emphasizes the importance of holding onto one’s motivation and deepest “why” to overcome challenges and achieve dreams.

“With a clear purpose in mind, you’ll have the courage to keep going and achieve your dreams,” she assures.

“Every day is a chance to rewrite your future,” she adds.

Embracing one’s journey and striving for greatness are central to her message. “Believe in yourself, because everyone deserves a Gr8life.”

Eunice Sanchez

Filipina teacher overcomes doubts to shine in UAE’s dance education

Growing up in a family of performers and talented teachers can be both a blessing and a burden. Eunice Sanchez, a passionate dancer and performer, experienced this dichotomy firsthand. Constant comparisons to her family’s talents impacted her confidence, but she remained proud of them and determined to pursue her love for dancing and performing. With the unwavering support of her family and friends, she learned to overcome doubts and push her boundaries in her artistic journey.

Eunice’s journey began with a Bachelor of Secondary Education majoring in MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health). Despite her doubts and the weight of expectations, she successfully passed the Licensure Examination for Teachers. At just 20 years old, she took on the role of a P.E. professor and dance coordinator at STI College in Paranaque City.

“I was so young and inexperienced,” she shares with The Global Filipino Magazine, “but I knew I had to persevere.”

After two years, she applied to the Department of Education in Mabini, Batangas, where she was promoted to a Teacher II position in senior high school and continued to serve as a dance troupe coordinator.

Despite her dedication, Eunice faced numerous challenges and uncertainties.

“The demanding nature of being a DepEd

teacher often made me question whether the sacrifices were worth the salary,” she admits.

An unexpected opportunity arose when her mother’s friend in Abu Dhabi offered her a job as a shadow teacher. Thrilled at the prospect of working abroad, Eunice eagerly accepted, only to find herself in an unexpected role—caring for a special needs child.

Initially disheartened, Eunice soon embraced her new role.

“I poured my heart into caring for the four-year-old with Down syndrome,” she shares.

This experience humbled her, teaching her the value of hard-earned money and giving her a newfound respect for nannies, especially Filipino nannies.

“It was a challenging yet rewarding experience,” she reflects.

Her dedication did not go unnoticed. Recognizing her true calling, her employer helped her transition to a school environment more suited to her talents. Eunice found her place at a school focused on music, dance, visual arts, and performing arts, catering to students of diverse nationalities.

“I cherished every moment,” she says.

“Dancing and playing with the children, watching their stage performances, and seeing them shine brought me immense joy.”

Through her students, Eunice learned invaluable lessons about her own skills and talents. She faced challenges such as discrimination from other nationalities, but she persevered.

“Talent transcends nationality,” she asserts.

“The cheers and applause from audiences affirmed my efforts.” After nearly six years at Jazzrockers Dubai, she felt immense gratitude for the support and trust of her colleagues and the parents.

Completing her contract with Jazzrockers, Eunice brought her experiences back to Abu Dhabi. At Mosaic Music and Dance Institute, she discovered new opportunities and challenges. Initially teaching ballet and gymnastics, she now also teaches hip-hop dance, a genre she had always dreamed of mastering.

“Through constant practice, I honed my skills and style,” she says, “and the welcoming environment here has been a

refreshing change.”

The institute’s commitment to engaging kids and providing a supportive atmosphere fueled her passion even further.

“It’s a dynamic and inspiring place to teach and grow,” she remarks.

Her achievements are deeply meaningful to her, and she attributes much of her success to the unwavering support of her husband.

“His love and encouragement continually inspire me to exceed my own expectations,” she says. Her husband, a talented Harlem dancer and former champion turned chef, showcases his skills through live cooking shows.

“His performances, incorporating juggling and tricks with spatulas and knives, always impress me,” she adds.

Eunice feels immense gratitude to God for guiding her to the UAE, where she has flourished both personally and professionally.

“Meeting and connecting with people from diverse nationalities who share my passion for music has enriched my life beyond measure,” she says.

Reflecting on her upbringing, she cherishes the joyful memories of her family. “Music and dance were integral parts of our daily lives, creating a nurturing environment where creativity thrived,” she recalls.

Looking ahead, Eunice is surrendering everything to God’s plan, trusting in His guidance for the future. She dreams of returning to teaching at the college level with newfound confidence and establishing her own music and dance studio. Her husband also envisions owning a streetwear shop, inspired by their involvement in live selling and the vintage community.

Eunice’s advice to fellow Filipinos facing similar challenges is rooted in her own experiences. “Persevere and give your best efforts despite criticism,” she encourages. “Hard work, patience, and obedience are inherent traits among Filipinos. Prioritize your happiness and always find strength in prayer.”

To her fellow artists and performers who have faced comparisons and discouraging words, Eunice says, “Stay strong and keep moving forward. Believe in your God-given talents and abilities. Each of us excels in different ways, which is why we have such a rich diversity of genres and styles.”

Junior Brown

Meet the Filipino artist who starred in the Visit Abu Dhabi campaign with Music Travel Love

Filipino talent in singing has gained global recognition, with many going viral for their incredible voices. From belting high-note songs in karaoke sessions to captivating audiences worldwide, Filipinos have become known for their musical prowess. Comments on viral videos often say, “Just another normal day in the Philippines,” highlighting the country’s rich singing culture.

One such Filipino artist making waves internationally is Junior Brown. At 36, Junior has spent the last 13 years abroad, currently residing in Dubai. He was recently featured in the Visit Abu Dhabi campaign alongside Music Travel Love, a significant milestone in his music career.

Junior’s journey with Music Travel Love and the Visit Abu Dhabi project began through The Fridge, an initiative that gave him the opportunity to perform at various locations in Abu Dhabi in a busker style.

“One night, I was informed that I got

picked to do a project with MTL. I was ecstatic to meet them since I grew up watching them, let alone to be in a music video with the Moffatts,” Junior shared with The Global Filipino Magazine.

Performing in Abu Dhabi was a magical experience for Junior.

“Abu Dhabi is so majestic and just hits different. It’s family-oriented, and you see people glad someone is playing music in public. It’s also impressive to see the organizers adhere to prayer times and keep traditions intact. I had a great experience,” he said.

When asked why he thought Visit Abu Dhabi chose him for the campaign, Junior humbly replied, “To be honest, I have no idea. There are hundreds of amazing singers in the event too. I was just having too much fun performing.”

Working with the Moffatt brothers, Bob and Clint, was a dream come true for Junior.

“They’re amazing. Bob and Clint are consummate professionals. They were so patient and supportive through the process and made sure we were comfortable,” he said.

The impact of this project on Junior’s music career has been significant.

“I was just a pub singer and would love to keep thinking that way. I wasn’t a huge social media guy, but now I have decided to pursue a YouTube channel since a lot of Music Travel Love fans want to hear more from me. I appreciate them so much,” he shared.

Life and career

Junior’s overseas journey began in October 2011 when he moved to Dubai. He initially worked various jobs across several companies as a marketing and sales officer. However, in January 2023, he made the bold decision to quit his job and pursue singing full-time. Today, Junior performs at various musical and F&B venues, including Hard Rock Cafe, Taj Hotels, and Pizza Express

restaurants.

Reflecting on his decision to work abroad, Junior said, “I was 24 years old back then, and I thought there could be something bigger and more exciting for me overseas, so I decided to pack my bags and start my adventure.”

Before moving abroad, Junior’s first job was as a host for a radio station (DJ), which eventually led him to the call center business, where he quickly transitioned to earn more money.

What Junior enjoys most about his current work is meeting people who appreciate his music.

“I enjoy meeting a lot of people, especially those who appreciate my music,” he said.

Working overseas has allowed Junior to provide for his family while doing what he loves—music. However, his journey hasn’t been without struggles.

“One of my struggles was unemployment, which made me realize you don’t want to entirely depend on one basket,” he explained.

During these trying times, Junior looked up to people who gave him chances in the music business.

“You know who you are,” he added.

Future plans

Looking to the future, Junior envisions a peaceful life back home.

“When everything’s been said and done, I want to go back home, retired in a beach house with my wife and children—but still do music for fun,” he shared.

Junior’s advice for fellow Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) is to stay positive and embrace challenges.

“Keep yourself around positivity. Embrace all trials and be the person you are destined to be,” he advised.

BLNC BLVD

The Filipino band captivating Qatar with alternative rock

Formed in the shadow of the global pandemic, BLNC BLVD emerged from a simple yet profound desire to create and share original music. The band’s origin story is as unique as its members, each bringing a piece of themselves to the table.

“It was during the pandemic period when the band was formed. It all began with one Facebook post stating that one person was looking for bandmates to play original song compositions,” recalls Jenesis Ombao, the band’s rhythm guitarist.

By May 2021, the group had its first jam session, which Ombao describes as unexpectedly seamless, like a meeting of old friends.

The name BLNC BLVD was chosen through a democratic process.

“We agreed to choose a band name and then agreed to have a vote. Blanc Boulevard was selected as the official band name,” Ombao explains to The Global Filipino Magazine.

The name evokes a serene, snowy road by the seashore, akin to a tranquil stroll along Manila Bay—a nostalgic image for many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) dreaming of home.

BLNC BLVD’s lineup includes Peter Michael Anot on main vocals, Ian Chris Alisbo on lead guitars, Jenesis Ombao on rhythm guitars, Jerome Paghubasan on drums, and Mario Montenegro Jr. on bass guitars. Their collective influence from the ‘90s era shapes their alternative rock style, blending it with Original Pilipino Music (OPM).

Ombao emphasizes their aim to connect with a broad audience: “We have English songs too to reach out to other nationalities who are listening to the

kind of genre we are playing.”

The journey has not been without its hurdles. As a new band, gaining recognition and securing gigs was a significant challenge.

“Firstly, nobody believes in us, which is very common since we are starting up. Secondly, it is difficult to find gigs, especially in hotels as the talent fee is not that competitive,” Ombao shares.

Their breakthrough came when they submitted their song “Miss Blako” to Qabayan Radio 94.3, the only Filipino radio station in Qatar. The song’s success on the station’s weekly top 10 countdown marked a turning point.

“We were fortunate to hear our song being played for the first time on air and on the 8th spot, then reached the top 5, then the top spot, and stayed there for many weeks,” Ombao recounts.

BLNC BLVD’s music stands out for its simplicity and heartfelt lyrics.

“Our music style is simple, Alternative Rock, and one of our main goals is to reach more listeners, not only in Qatar but also internationally,” says Ombao.

The band’s dedication to consistency and their willingness to explore other genres like RnB, Pop, and ‘80s music further set them apart.

Among their memorable performances, one stands out: a live session on Qabayan Radio.

“We were very nervous and anxious mixed with excitement. We are still laughing every time we watch the video of our first live performance,” Ombao says.

Another significant milestone was their

first anniversary celebration, where they managed every aspect of the event themselves, highlighting their commitment and teamwork.

Connecting with their audience is paramount for BLNC BLVD. They make it a point to fulfill song requests from their supporters during performances, both live and recorded. Ombao stresses the importance of audience engagement:

“We make sure that these tiny details are not overlooked, and we give high appreciation to our supporters because if not for them, we will not be here in our current state.”

Their presence on multiple social media platforms, including Facebook, Spotify, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, ensures they stay connected with fans worldwide.

Mark John Ilano

Filipino marketing specialist thrives in Dubai, balancing corporate role and vlogging

The journey of building a successful career abroad is often filled with challenges and triumphs. For many, the path to achieving professional and personal goals requires dedication, resilience, and a passion for growth. This is exemplified by the story of Mark John Ilano, a 31-year-old Marketing Specialist currently thriving in the UAE.

Mark’s professional journey is a blend of strategic marketing expertise and a passion for urban lifestyle content creation. Working at Zone Power Tech Co., he is responsible for developing and executing marketing strategies, promoting products and services, and driving sales. His role involves extensive market research to identify target audiences, analyze consumer behavior, and evaluate competitors. Mark also manages marketing campaigns across various channels, including digital, social media, print, and events.

In addition to his role as a Marketing Specialist, Mark is a licensed urban lifestyle content creator based in Dubai. For over five years, he has been vlogging to provide information, insights, and practical solutions for modern urban living. His content spans fashion, beauty, travel, and luxury products, engaging his audience with the latest trends and events. Collaborating with brands, he aims to raise awareness and offer firsthand experiences to his followers.

His professional journey began in 2018 as a customer service representative handling VIP kids in the entertainment sector, where he hosted school trips,

birthday parties, and operated large rides. He then transitioned to a role at CAFU, managing inbound and outbound calls before taking charge of the company’s social media platforms. After two years at CAFU, he pursued his current position, leveraging his passion for social media to enhance his professional endeavors.

The decision to work abroad stemmed from a desire to explore new opportunities. After graduating from college, Mark initially worked as a Front Office Agent in a hotel without a specific plan.

“I wanted to gain experience before pursuing a career as a Cabin Crew member,” he shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.

“However, during my six months at the company, a colleague applied for an international position, sparking my curiosity. I applied online, and to my surprise, I received a phone call inviting me for an interview in the UAE. Taking a chance, I went for the interview and was fortunate enough to be offered the job. This experience made me realize that pursuing opportunities abroad could lead to a promising career path.”

Balancing work and studies as a BPO representative in the Philippines, Mark’s journey has been one of resilience and determination.

“The experience sharpened my knowledge, skills, and attitude, preparing me for new challenges and opportunities in the UAE,” he says.

Transitioning from a call center agent to customer service in retail, Mark faced

the physical demands of the job and the emotional challenge of being away from his family. However, these experiences strengthened his resolve to save and provide for his loved ones.

Mark finds immense satisfaction in his current role as a Marketing Specialist.

“I genuinely enjoy my work,” he shares.

“With a strong understanding of social media, I have the opportunity to collaborate with other brands and create content for my platform. Exploring new places in Dubai and sharing updates with my followers brings me great joy. The most rewarding aspect is the appreciation and support from my audience for the brands I represent. In addition to financial compensation, I find fulfillment in the creative process and the enjoyment that comes from my work.”

Working overseas has opened numerous doors for Mark, particularly in vlogging.

“Interacting with individuals from diverse cultures and acquiring new knowledge has enhanced my public speaking skills and cultivated resilience in facing various challenges,” he says.

Despite the opportunities, managing finances has been a challenge.

“One common struggle among overseas Filipino workers is managing a limited salary to cover expenses while also sending money to loved ones back home,” Mark explains.

“I meticulously calculate all expenses, allocate my salary accordingly, prioritize essential purchases, and communicate openly with my family about my financial situation. Additionally, I engage in parttime work to supplement my income and maintain financial stability.”

Looking to the future, Mark hopes to return to the Philippines to expand his business ventures.

“If given the opportunity to become a successful entrepreneur, I would return to my home country to concentrate on expanding my business and be closer to my family,” he says.

For those struggling abroad, Mark offers this advice: “It is crucial to have a safety net for unforeseen circumstances. Seek companionship from friends or flatmates to alleviate stress. Above all, exercise caution and discretion when sharing personal information. Staying connected with family back home can provide a sense of comfort and support during challenging times.”

Rachel Ngan Duenas

Meet Rachel Ngan

Duenas: From pandemic painter to Louvre exhibitor

Rachel Ngan Duenas, a 37-yearold visual artist and tea sommelier, is set to make her international debut at the Louvre in Paris. From October 18-20, 2024, she will be among the selected Filipino artists showcasing their work at the “Carrousel du Louvre,” an esteemed art shopping event known for its vibrant blend of talents and seasoned collectors.

Rachel’s path to this prestigious event is as unique as her dual careers.

“The pandemic was a dark time for the entire world, yet I discovered painting and teaching tea meditation,” Rachel recalls.

It all started when she helped a friend suffering from anxiety by teaching them tea meditation.

This practice soon expanded to help more people, ultimately leading her to realize, “It is not sustainable to heal others without healing yourself. Art healed me. My paintings are my prayers in physical form.”

In May 2023, Rachel’s art career took off with her first solo exhibition. That year, she managed to host three solo exhibitions and even got invited to Paris Fashion Week to teach tea meditation. It

was during this fashion week that her journey to the Louvre began.

“I was invited to help calm some of the creatives working behind the scenes during such a hectic season,” the Filipina artist currently based in Muntinlupa, Philippines, tells The Global Filipino Magazine.

Her work caught the eye of Philippine Ambassador to France Junever Mahilum-West, who endorsed her to the organizers of the Louvre show.

Rachel’s upcoming exhibit at the Carrousel du Louvre will be guided by Mr. Dhon dela Paz of Kwadro Pintura, an advocate for bringing Filipino artists to the international art scene. The Carrousel du Louvre, an underground mall beneath the iconic museum, transforms into an art festival twice a year, where collectors and gallerists gather to admire emerging artists from around the world.

Rachel’s work, described by art critic Cid Reyes as “seeming naive in execution, but quietly expressive,” strikes a balance between abstract and impressionism.

Often compared to Monet for her style of brushstrokes, she aims to bring a sense of relaxation and joy through her pieces.

“I want the Parisian audience to see the beauty of art inspired by the tropical flora and fauna of the Philippines, expressed in a distinct impressionist style,” Rachel shares.

Her artwork, which pays homage to her homeland, will be on display alongside global talents, offering a glimpse of Filipino artistry to the world.

Rachel’s life mantra, “To be genuinely kind to others, you have to be kind to yourself first,” reflects her journey of self-healing and helping others.

This philosophy extends to her tea meditation practice, which she enjoys immensely.

“I enjoy teaching tea meditation because the world can use more kindness. My clients claim they slept so well after the session. Some even cry, and others feel energized. If their cups provided them peace and love for that moment in time, then I am fulfilled,” she explains.

Her passion for art is equally profound.

“My artworks are my prayers in physical form. I love knowing my art finds their permanent homes because they inherit the prayers within my works,” Rachel says.

She also enjoys watching children interact with her works, finding joy in their unfiltered reactions.

She dreams of creating an art collection on piña silk, a traditional Filipino fabric.

“I often describe the fabric to nonFilipinos as translucent as moonlight. It would be lovely to have a collaboration with a couture designer incorporating my paintings,” she envisions.

Rachel also plans to visit Mindoro, home to the All Nations Missions School, a missionary organization with 43 Mangyan churches. She hopes to find ways to support them further. Additionally, she wants to visit Zamboanga to find unique materials like the Yakan weave and incorporate them into her future projects.

Before her trip to Paris, she will host her fourth solo exhibit and final show in the Philippines at Chef Jessie Rockwell Club in Makati from September 7-30, 2024. As she prepares to captivate audiences at the “Carrousel du Louvre” and the Kwadro Pintura Gallery in October, Rachel Ngan Duenas continues to embody the spirit of Filipino artistry, bringing a refreshing new dimension to the global art scene.
