Jade Mae Pandan

Meet the Filipina fitness coach in Saudi Arabia who’s also a global dance ambassador

As a fitness coach in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, Jade Mae Pandan brings a wealth of experience and passion to her role. A graduate of Western Mindanao State University with a degree in Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health (MAPEH), Jade Mae has spent the last three years working abroad, where she has made significant strides in her career. Her journey is one of dedication to fitness and dance, and she continues to inspire others through her work.

Jade Mae’s current position at Blueshark Gym allows her to combine her love for dance and fitness. Her responsibilities as a Fitness Coach include not just guiding her clients through various exercise routines but also creating a positive impact on society and the environment.

“Beyond my career goals, I am passionate about making a positive impact on society and the environment through my work,” she shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.

This passion drives her to excel in her field, constantly seeking new ways to motivate and support her clients.

Before moving to Saudi Arabia in 2021, Jade Mae had a rich career in the Philippines. She was a Licensed Zumba Instructor, a Dancesport Teacher, and a Gymnastics Trainer. Her passion for dance also led her to become the Artistic Director and Founder of Jadanza Academy. Additionally, she was a board member of the FIBA Amateur

League, a member of the World Dance Sport Federation, and the Dance Sport Council of the Philippines. Jade Mae’s talent and dedication were recognized internationally, as she represented the Philippines in various countries, including Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, and Hong Kong.

The decision to work abroad was not taken lightly by Jade Mae. She understood that living and working in a foreign country could be a transformative experience, offering the opportunity to develop new skills, adaptability, and resilience while navigating different cultural norms and challenges.

“Working abroad might offer competitive salaries and benefits compared to opportunities available in your home country,” she notes, highlighting one of the many reasons she chose to embark on this journey.

Jade Mae enjoys her current work immensely. Teaching dance, she explains, is a medium of artistic expression, and as an instructor, she has the opportunity to explore and create choreography, music selections, and themes that resonate with her and her students.

“Teaching dance can be a continuous journey of learning and selfimprovement. As you guide your students through their dance education, you may also discover new techniques, styles, and perspectives that enrich your own practice,” she says, reflecting on the most satisfying aspect of her work.

Working overseas has also brought its own set of challenges. Jade Mae has had to endure feelings of homesickness and nostalgia as she adjusted to life in a new country.

“Being away from family, friends, and familiar surroundings can trigger feelings of homesickness and nostalgia,” she admits. However, she has found ways to cope with these emotions by building a sense of belonging and community in her new environment.

Looking to the future, Jade Mae is considering starting her own business or working as a freelancer after gaining significant international experience. She envisions leveraging her overseas networks, skills, and insights to pursue entrepreneurial ventures that align with her passion for dance and fitness.

For those who are currently struggling abroad, Jade Mae offers a piece of advice: “Remember that adjusting to life abroad takes time, patience, and perseverance. Be patient with yourself and trust in your ability to overcome challenges and adapt to your new environment. Stay focused on your goals and keep moving forward, one step at a time.”

In addition to her professional insights, Jade Mae believes in the power of kindness. She emphasizes that small gestures of kindness can make a big difference in the world, uplifting spirits and strengthening communities.

Sharlon Quiohilag Almeda

Filipino tech startup in Dubai breaks barriers with innovative e-learning and eSports platforms

As a tech entrepreneur, innovation and resilience are key to navigating the fast-paced digital landscape.

Sharlon Quiohilag Almeda, the General Manager of Al Meda Digital Solutions LLC, embodies these qualities as he leads his company to new heights. His journey from Manila to Dubai in 2015, alongside his siblings, marked the start of a challenging yet inspiring path to leverage technology for meaningful change.

The inspiration behind Sharlon’s tech startup is deeply rooted in his family’s journey.

“My inspiration behind starting my tech company is my family,” Sharlon shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.

Moving to Dubai to join their parents, the Almeda family faced numerous challenges typical for immigrants, from adapting to a new environment to dealing with high education costs. These difficulties inspired Sharlon to create solutions not just for his family but for the broader Filipino community.

“I realized that we are not just the ones who are struggling with the same issue,” he notes, highlighting how his initial personal struggles evolved into a broader mission to address educational and socio-economic challenges faced by Filipino families abroad.

Sharlon’s entrepreneurial journey took a bold turn during the COVID-19

pandemic. With both he and his father losing their jobs, he decided to launch GURO e-Learning Services International in 2021.

“It’s indeed a gamble, but I believe it’s worth the risk and it paid off,” Sharlon reflects. GURO became a crucial platform during the pandemic, bridging the gap between students and educators and providing opportunities for those affected by the economic downturn.

Navigating challenges and creating solutions

Starting GURO was not without its challenges. “One of the biggest challenges that I faced when I established GURO e-Learning Services International is funding,” Sharlon admits.

Bootstrapping his business from personal savings, he had to be resourceful and creative in overcoming financial constraints and gaining client trust.

“It took a lot of effort to make things work and to earn the trust of our clients,” he recalls, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and adaptability in building a successful startup.

Beyond GURO, Sharlon expanded his entrepreneurial footprint with platforms like Double G Esports Entertainment and eBuys Online Store. Double G caters to the growing eSports community, providing a platform where enthusiasts can “play, win, earn, and repeat.”

Sharlon envisions Double G as a pioneer in organizing inclusive e-Sporting events and contributing to the thriving eSports community.

Meanwhile, eBuys Online Store sets itself apart with its customer-focused approach, offering same-day delivery and a unique range of products, including hard-to-find items and “open box” products. “We offer unique varieties of products…that won’t usually be available on a common e-Commerce platform available in the region,” Sharlon explains, highlighting the platform’s distinct value proposition.

Empowering the Filipino community

Sharlon’s ventures are not just businesses; they are platforms that specifically cater to the Filipino community. GURO e-Learning, for example, supports Filipino families overseas by providing accessible and affordable online tutoring services and skill development workshop options. Double G Esports aims to foster a community of Filipino gamers, potentially establishing an elite eSports club capable of competing globally. eBuys, on the other hand, opens doors for Filipino entrepreneurs to introduce their products to new markets, promoting “Made in the Philippines” goods worldwide.

These platforms have created opportunities and provided support to Filipinos globally, especially during challenging times. Sharlon proudly shares, “We managed to provide livelihood to our fellow unemployed kababayans in times of crisis,” underscoring the broader social impact of his ventures.

Looking ahead, Sharlon envisions his company becoming a leader in the e-Learning, e-Commerce, and e-Sports industries across the UAE and beyond. He remains committed to the Filipino community, continuously seeking ways to innovate and expand. For those interested in collaborating or joining his ventures, Sharlon encourages proactive engagement, offering various ways for individuals and businesses to get involved through their platforms.

For aspiring Filipino entrepreneurs, Sharlon’s advice is clear: “Be consistent, trust the process and always keep in mind that hard work will pay off.” He emphasizes the importance of having SMART goals, conducting thorough market research, and being open to partnerships. “Be an innovator, don’t confine the word ‘business’ to our traditional businesses,” he advises, encouraging creativity and purposedriven entrepreneurship.

Overcoming heartbreak and cultural barriers, Filipino makeup artist shines in global fashion shows

Moving overseas can often be a challenging endeavor, but for a 36-year-old Filipino hair and makeup artist, it became an opportunity to carve out a unique space in Dubai’s vibrant fashion industry. With nine years of experience abroad, Mau Piodena IV’s career showcases a remarkable blend of resilience, adaptability, and a passion for creative expression. Transitioning from corporate roles to becoming a soughtafter freelance artist, he has proven that it is never too late to reinvent oneself and pursue a true calling.

Before moving into makeup artistry, Mau’s career began in the corporate sector. In the Philippines, he worked as a technical support representative for ePLDT Ventus for six years, eventually becoming a New Hire Trainer.

“I spent over two years training new hires,” Mau recalls to The Global Filipino Magazine.

He then moved to West Contact Services, where he continued to develop his technical support skills. However, Mau felt something was missing from his professional life, a yearning for creativity and expression that led him to pivot toward a vastly different career path.

After stints as a business analyst and logistics officer, Mau planned to move to the United States. However, a change of plans brought him to Dubai instead, a decision influenced by personal reasons.

“I decided to move to Dubai to help myself move on from a heartbreak,” he shares

candidly. This unexpected move became a turning point in his life, opening doors to new opportunities he had never imagined.

In Dubai, Mau’s career took a creative turn. Initially working with an e-commerce company as a freelance makeup artist, he refined his skills and quickly adapted to the fast-paced fashion industry.

“It wasn’t long before I was working for international brands like Hermès, YSL, Cartier, and Chanel,” Mau notes, reflecting on his rapid ascent in the industry. His portfolio grew to include magazine ad campaigns and prestigious fashion shows, both locally and internationally.

A standout moment in Mau’s career was when he was invited to work at Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks, a rare opportunity that showcased his talent on a global stage.

“Being invited to Milan and Paris was a dream come true, and working with designers like Michael Cinco during his Paris Fashion Show was surreal,” he says. These experiences have cemented his reputation as a versatile and talented makeup artist.

Passion and the art of makeup

For Mau, makeup is more than just a profession; it’s a form of art and personal expression. He enjoys the creative freedom and the ability to make people feel good about themselves.

“I am more than blessed being able to juggle both of my passions: makeup and training people. It doesn’t feel like working at all,” Mau shares. The joy he derives from his work is evident in his enthusiasm for every project, from high-fashion editorials to personal client sessions.

Aside from his work with top fashion brands, Mau is deeply committed to education and mentorship. He has taught makeup courses at the Filipino Institute and has conducted masterclasses at various events, including Expo 2020. His certifications from prestigious institutions like the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) and the International Association for Trainers Society (IATSO) in Paris attest to his expertise and dedication to his craft.

“I want to give back to the community by sharing what I’ve learned, especially with aspiring artists,” he says.

The journey to success hasn’t been without challenges. Mau faced significant cultural adjustments when he first arrived in Dubai and encountered professional skepticism about his capabilities.

“I was told I could only do bridal makeup, but I never let those words define me,” Mau recalls. Instead, he used these challenges as motivation to improve his skills and expand his repertoire. Through perseverance and dedication, he transitioned from bridal to editorial and high-fashion makeup, a move that required learning new techniques and styles.

Mau credits his success to the support of key mentors in the industry, including renowned makeup artists Carla Fuentes, Bobby Caparas, and Jojo Dantespadua.

“They inspire me so much, and I’ve been fortunate to work with them a few times,” he says. Their guidance has helped Mau refine his craft and establish himself as a respected figure in Dubai’s fashion scene.

Looking ahead: Dreams and aspirations

Looking forward, Mau is filled with ambition and a desire to broaden his horizons. “Part of my long-term goal is to work globally and create my own brand and learning institute,” he reveals. His dream is to continue sharing his knowledge and experience with others, helping them find their own path in the beauty industry. “We Filipinos are the most talented, resilient, and resourceful among all. We will thrive and survive anywhere we plant ourselves in,” he proudly states.

Sherwin O. Arboladura

Dancing to a new beat: How a Filipino transitioned from entertainment to hospitality

Changing careers overseas can be a daunting yet rewarding experience, especially when it involves transitioning from a familiar profession to an entirely new industry. For one Filipino, this journey began in the vibrant nightlife of the Philippines, where a passion for dance and entertainment laid the foundation for a successful career. At 38, Sherwin O. Arboladura, or “Shaw”, now finds himself in a multifaceted role within the hospitality industry in the UAE. As the Supervisor, Sales & Marketing Executive, and Events Coordinator at Barako Grill, Pearl Hotel, and Spa in Umm Al Quwain, he has seamlessly blended his love for entertainment with his new responsibilities, creating an environment that brings joy and relaxation to countless guests.

Shaw began his overseas journey six years ago, driven by a desire to gain international experience and to “step outside of [his] comfort zone,” as he puts it. The move was also financially motivated, offering him the chance to earn more while pursuing his professional ambitions.

Reflecting on his early career in the Philippines, Shaw fondly recalls his time as a member of the ASF dance group on the popular noon-time show “Wowowee.”

This experience was a highlight, not just for the fame it brought him, but for the invaluable lessons in work ethics taught by his choreographer. “Being with ABS-CBN celebrities was an incredible experience, but it was the discipline and dedication we learned that truly shaped me,” Shaw shared with The Global Filipino Magazine.

His talents didn’t end on the dance floor. After his stint in the entertainment industry, Shaw explored the corporate world, where he discovered his knack for sales and marketing. “Selling cars at Nissan Westgate was a turning point for me. I realized I had a gift for marketing,” Shaw said, describing how this newfound skill led him to establish BIGHIT Productions. This venture allowed him to create shows and events across the Philippines, further honing his skills in hosting and event management.

Today, Shaw’s role at Barako Grill allows him to blend his love for entertainment with his marketing acumen. As a supervisor, he ensures smooth workflow, provides training to new hires, and fosters a strong sense of teamwork among the staff. “One of my key responsibilities

is making sure that Barako Grill is ‘on the map,’ so to speak. We aim to provide entertainment that serves as a stress reliever for our guests,” Shaw explained.

Working in the food and beverage industry has its own rewards. For Shaw, the most satisfying aspect of his job is seeing the smiles on customers’ faces as they enjoy the food crafted with love and care. “Serving people and seeing them love our food makes me feel like we’ve done what needs to be done,” he expressed, highlighting the joy that comes from making a positive impact on others’ lives.

However, Shaw’s journey abroad has not been without its challenges. Leaving behind his family in the Philippines was a tough decision, but it has also been a period of growth. “Working abroad has made my way of thinking more mature. It’s made me realize that someday, I want to ‘sit on your chair’—to achieve success with pride,” he said, reflecting on the personal growth he has experienced since moving to the UAE.

Overcoming these challenges required a strong support system and a proactive approach to planning. “I always plan ahead, even if I don’t know what the future holds,” Shaw shared, crediting his mother for providing him with the best advice in the world. Her wisdom has been a guiding light for him throughout his journey.

Looking ahead, Shaw remains flexible about his future. “Just go with the flow,” he said with a laugh, but his aspirations are clear. He aims to continue growing in his career, with the ultimate goal of returning home to the Philippines, where he hopes to use his experience to support various advocacies and perhaps even start a new venture.

For his fellow Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), Shaw offers simple but powerful advice: “Be strong enough to face all challenges in life, believe in yourself, and keep your circle small with people who share the same goals.” He also emphasizes the importance of financial discipline and self-love, advising others to keep their expenses in check and to prioritize their own well-being before anything else.

In addition to his career insights, Shaw expresses his gratitude to those who have supported him along the way. “For those people who believed in what I can give, thank you very much,” he said, concluding our conversation with the same positivity and enthusiasm that has driven his journey from the dance floor in the Philippines to the dining tables of Umm Al Quwain.

Mars Yabut De los Santos

Forging a media empire in Dubai that is proudly Filipino

Mars Yabut De los Santos is a name synonymous with media excellence and entrepreneurship in the UAE and the Philippines. As the CEO and owner of Expat Media Group, a thriving media brand that has been making waves for the past eight years, Mars has carved a unique niche in the media landscape. But her journey wasn’t just about building a business; it’s a story of persistence, vision, and passion, backed by over 15 years of experience in media and public relations.

A multi-award-winning media veteran, Mars’ accomplishments span from being awarded Best in Journalism by the Dubai Government to receiving the Global Filipino Icon Award and being recognized as an Innovator in Digital Media Content. This year, she joined the elite group of the Top 100 Entrepreneurs of 2024. Yet, despite her accolades, Mars remains as grounded as ever, committed to telling stories, supporting communities, and paving the way for the next generation of media professionals.

Growing up in business

Mars’ entrepreneurial spirit didn’t just emerge when she launched Expat Media in 2016. In fact, it runs in her family.

“My growing-up years were spent between my hometown in Samar, and Manila,” Mars shares, reminiscing about her childhood. “I am the youngest of seven children, but it often felt like I was an only child because my siblings were already in college while I was still young.”

Mars’ father and grandfather, a passionate businessman, ran a car repair factory and a fleet of buses in her hometown. “It was my happy place,” she smiles. “I loved going to the factory, saying hello to the mechanics,

and seeing all the government service vehicles being repaired. I’ve always had a fascination with cars, and that business environment instilled in me an interest in entrepreneurship.”

That early exposure to business sowed the seeds of Mars’ career aspirations. Today, she’s not only the proud owner of a successful media company but also a budding real estate rental business in the Philippines. “I’m trying to carve my own niche in business,” she says modestly, adding, “I always knew I wanted to start my own company.”

A calling in journalism

Mars’ love for storytelling began with a dream of becoming like Loren Legarda, a renowned journalist in the Philippines. “She was always poised and razor-sharp as a journalist,” Mars says. Inspired by Legarda’s journalistic brilliance, Mars pursued a degree in Mass Communications and interned in media companies like Viva Films and Manila Bulletin.

But Mars didn’t stop at journalism. Her stint in public relations opened her eyes to the possibilities of combining media and PR. “I realized I could have the best of both worlds—journalism and PR. My end goal was always to become an entrepreneur,” she explains.

A leap of faith in the UAE

Mars’ journey to the UAE began in 2006 when she left a lucrative government media job in the Philippines to pursue a media career in Dubai. Her family thought she was taking a huge risk, but Mars saw an opportunity. “That’s just me,” she laughs. “I always see potential in things.”

Although the company she initially

joined closed within a month, Mars quickly landed a role at Gulf News, the UAE’s largest newspaper. She started as a proofreader and worked her way up to become the first Filipino editor of Gulf News’online magazine division. “My team and I handled editorial management for titles like Friday, Wheels, InsideOut, and more. It was a dream come true.”

Birth of Expat Media

In 2016, Mars felt ready to take the leap and start her own media company. “I always follow a timeline for myself,” she explains. “I wanted to create a platform where I could combine my love for journalism with the challenge of entrepreneurship.”

And so, Expat Media was born. What started as a small news website has since grown into Expat Media Group, which includes an online news arm, a print magazine, and divisions for PR, events, marketing, and talent management.

“I’m so proud of what we’ve built,” Mars says. “We’ve grown steadily over the past eight years, and we’ve managed to help so many people, especially Filipinos in the UAE—whether by telling their stories, providing media support, or offering career opportunities.”

Making waves in the UAE

Expat Media has become a household name in the UAE’s Filipino community and beyond. The magazine, Expat Media Special Edition, is one of the largest distributed magazines in the UAE, and the company has worked on high-profile projects for both government agencies and private companies.

One of Expat Media’s proudest achievements under Mars’ leadership was organizing the first From the UAE

With Love campaign for the UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, which won the UAE Government’s Best CSR Event of 2018. Expat Media also helped launch the first Filipino Labour Day in Sharjah, a groundbreaking event that earned the media company an award from the Sharjah Labour Standards Development Authority.

“We’re always proud to work with the community, whether through events, PR campaigns, or media content,” Mars says. “It’s incredibly rewarding when people tell us that Expat Media supports Filipino events and businesses, big or small.”

Challenges and triumphs

Running a media company hasn’t been without its challenges. Mars recalls instances where people betrayed her trust for selfish business interests.

“Thankfully, fate always finds a way to close the door on these people,” she says, emphasizing the importance of surrounding herself with trustworthy, loyal individuals.

In business, Mars believes in building strong relationships. “Take care of people, and business will follow,” she advises.

Looking to the future

As Expat Media celebrates its eighth anniversary, Mars is already planning for the future. “In ten years, I’d like to see Expat Media expand further in Asia and the Middle East,” she says. “I also want to venture into different industries.”

Beyond media, Mars has dreams of building a community market, expanding her real estate business, and perhaps even reviving her family’s car repair business. “I want to leave a legacy, not just for myself but for the next generation,” she says.

Advice for aspiring entrepreneurs

For those just starting their entrepreneurial journey, Mars has one key piece of advice: “Keep going, and stay focused on your goals. Even if it feels like you’re not getting anywhere, don’t stop. And when you make a promise, make sure you deliver.”

Her words reflect the determination that has defined her career. From her early days in the Philippines to her current role as one of the UAE’s most influential media entrepreneurs, Mars Yabut De los Santos is a testament to the power of hard work, vision, and a never-giveup attitude. With her inspiring journey, Mars continues to lead the way—one story, one success at a time.

Levhan Helmut Marks

German-Filipino in Dubai balances cultural understanding and electrifying nights as a DJ

Bridging cultures and igniting dance floors—these are the two worlds that Levhan Helmut Marks, also known as DJ Marko, navigates daily. Born and raised in Dubai for 36 years, Levhan embodies a unique blend of German and Filipino heritage, coupled with a deep understanding of Arabic culture, which he speaks fluently. His story is a vivid illustration of how cultural diversity can be a wellspring of creativity and resilience.

This linguistic skill is just one facet of his multifaceted life. By day, Levhan serves as a Customer Service Officer at the Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum Center for Cultural Understanding, specifically at the iconic Jumeirah Mosque. By night, he transforms into DJ Marko, bringing life to various venues across the city with his electrifying music and charismatic microphone presence.

Levhan’s journey has not been without its challenges. As a child, he harbored dreams of becoming a wrestler, football player, or even a rollerblader. However, it was dancing that first captured his heart before he found his true calling in DJing.

“I was the kind of person who learned from nothing to something,” he shares with The Global Filipino Magazine, underscoring the hard work and dedication he poured into his craft. His DJ career was on an upward trajectory until the COVID-19 pandemic struck, causing a significant setback.

“It was tough,” he admits, “and I had to make a diversion into becoming a customer service officer at the Cultural Center where I’m currently employed. So far, it’s been a blast!”

Despite the challenges, Levhan finds immense joy in his dual roles. As a Customer Service Officer, he interacts with a diverse array of visitors who come to explore the mosque.

“What I enjoy most about my current job is that every day I get to interact with different kinds of people who want to visit the mosque I work at,” he shares. This role allows him to bridge the gap between cultures, providing insights into the rich traditions of Dubai, which differ significantly from his German and Filipino roots.

When the sun sets, Levhan switches gears to his DJ persona, a role he describes as pure joy.

“I enjoy being a DJ because it’s something I do to make people have fun, dance, and sing along to the songs I play,” he explains. His ability to energize a crowd is enhanced by his skillful use of his voice, not just his music, to create a memorable experience for everyone present.

Being a German-Filipino raised in Dubai has offered Levhan a unique perspective on cultural adaptability. “The best thing about it is that it’s very easy to adapt

to the different cultures here,” he says, reflecting on his life in the Middle East. This adaptability has served him well, not only in his professional life but also in overcoming personal struggles.

Levhan’s journey has not always been smooth. For 15 years, he faced a deeply challenging period, which he describes as a “very dark hole.” However, his faith and belief in the possibility of better days kept him going. “Nothing is impossible as long as you believe in it,” he asserts, offering a message of hope and resilience to others who may be going through tough times.

Looking ahead, Levhan plans to stay in Dubai for the foreseeable future, with some exciting plans in the works. He prefers to let his actions speak louder than words but hints at his desire to help others grow as well.

To his fellow Filipinos abroad, Levhan offers this advice: “Be strong, believe in yourself, have a small circle, and be with the right kind of people who want to be around you, work with you, and collaborate with you. Because being around the wrong people is enough to bring you down. As long as you’re in the right circle, the rest will follow. I’m speaking from experience, and of course, salute to those who believed in me! They know who they are.”

In addition to his day job and DJing, Levhan has also made his mark in other areas. He has twice joined Tag 91.1 Filipino Radio Station’s “RJ for A Day” contest, becoming a Top 11 finalist, and won the title of “Urban Buildz DJ Battle” Champion in 2019 in Abu Dhabi. His talents continue to shine at Dubai’s “Pwestuhan,” an upcoming Filipino restobar in Al Rigga.

Baby Cayline Gamo

How a Filipina in the UAE turned a AED1,500 salary into a thriving oil and gas career

In the fast-paced and demanding world of the oil and gas industry, the mantra “Never stop dreaming, always keep believing” serves as a guiding light for those who dare to push their limits. This powerful belief system has driven countless individuals to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals, no matter how challenging the path may be. Among these driven professionals is Baby Cayline Gamo, the current Customer Account Manager at Tube Supply DMCC, who exemplifies the essence of perseverance and growth in her career.

Over the course of 14 years working abroad, Baby Cayline’s journey from the Philippines to the UAE has been marked by determination and resilience. She began as a tentative newcomer, uncertain of what lay ahead, but through consistent effort and an unwavering belief in herself, she transformed into a confident and accomplished figure in the industry.

Baby Cayline’s professional journey abroad began in April 2010 when she

moved to the UAE. Initially, she worked as an Account Assistant in a small shop on Naif Baniyas Road, with a starting salary of AED 1,500.

“It was a modest start,” she recalls, “but it laid the foundation for my understanding of the business environment in a foreign land.”

After a year, she transitioned to a customer service role at a bank, focusing on credit card and loan collections. However, personal reasons led her to resign after just six months.

The turning point in Baby Cayline’s career came when she joined Al Mazroui Advanced Technology as an admin.

“I started with a salary of AED 2,500, but within a year, I was promoted to After Sales Service Manager,” she shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.

Despite having no prior experience in this field, Baby Cayline’s determination to learn both the technical and commercial aspects of her new role set her apart. “It was challenging,” she admits, “but I pushed myself to master the complexities of the job, and over 13 years, I grew in ways I never imagined.”

Her tenure at Al Mazroui Advanced Technology was marked by continuous self-improvement, ultimately leading her to pursue new opportunities.

“I wanted more,” she shares, “and after years of hard work, I finally secured a position that offers my dream salary. This new chapter in my life is a testament to the power of perseverance.”

Overcoming personal and professional challenges

Baby Cayline’s decision to work abroad was not one she initially considered. “I was content in the Philippines,” she explains. “I had a fear of flying and was happy with my job as a call center agent in a leading BPO company, along with several side gigs.”

However, when an opportunity arose, she saw it as a chance to grow both personally and professionally. “The decision to move was driven by the potential for career advancement and the opportunity to experience new cultures,” she says.

Before her career in the UAE, Baby Cayline was a teacher in the Philippines, a profession she found unfulfilling. “Teaching left me feeling bored,” she confesses. “I wanted something that allowed me to interact more and refine my skills, so I became a call center agent. The role allowed me to engage

in extensive dialogue and improve my English accent, which was something I really enjoyed.”

The joys and rewards of working overseas

Today, Baby Cayline finds immense satisfaction in her role as a Customer Account Manager.

“What I love most about my job is the ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively,” she shares. “Closing a significant deal through my own strategic efforts is particularly rewarding.”

Despite the challenges, Baby Cayline thrives in her field, finding joy in the sense of accomplishment that comes with successfully navigating complex tasks.

Living and working abroad has also allowed Baby Cayline to witness her own personal growth. “I’ve gone from being naïve and lacking confidence to becoming strong and assured,” she reflects. “Every step I take is a testament to my progress, and I’m proud of the person I’ve become.”

Baby Cayline’s journey was not without its struggles. Growing up without a father presented significant emotional challenges. “I excelled academically, but I always felt incomplete,” she recalls. “I thought academic success would bring happiness, but it couldn’t fill the void left by my father’s absence.” Over time, Baby Cayline learned to find contentment in what she had rather than longing for what was missing. “I realized that happiness is a choice we make based on how we perceive and appreciate our lives,” she says. “Now, I focus on enjoying the present moment and embracing the peace of mind that comes with it.”

As Baby Cayline’s career continues to flourish, she has already started planning for the future.

“I’ve begun saving,” she reveals. “Once I’ve saved enough, I plan to return to the Philippines, build my own home, and live a simpler life. I want to start a small business for sustainability and enjoy the tranquility that comes with it.”

For other Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) facing challenges, Baby Cayline offers words of encouragement.

“Face your struggles head-on,” she advises. “Learn from your mistakes, believe in yourself, and trust that your hard work will pay off. Avoid feelings of resentment or envy; instead, celebrate others’ successes and stay optimistic about your own future.”

Marlo Lidot

The Cebuano artisan baker creating bread art with passion and faith

Marlo Lidot, a native of Cebu City in the Philippines, has an inspiring journey that exemplifies perseverance, passion, and faith.

His path to becoming an artisan baker began in 2015, during an internship at Radisson Blu Cebu, where he first discovered his passion for baking.

Marlo’s educational background is rooted in hard work and determination. He pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology, majoring in Food Preparation and Services, at Cebu Technological University. As a working student, his days were packed with responsibilities.

“I was a working student in the morning until afternoon, attended classes from afternoon to evening, and helped my aunt with her computer shop business during the night,” he recalls to The Global Filipino Magazine. Coming from a poor family without parental support, Marlo relied on sheer hard work, dedication, and prayer. “Pure hard work, dedication, and prayer to our God were the keys to all these wonderful blessings,” he reflects.

After gaining experience at prestigious

hotels like Radisson Blu Cebu and Marco Polo Plaza Cebu, Marlo found himself at a crossroads during the pandemic. In February 2020, just as he was about to embark on a new opportunity as an OFW baker in the Maldives, the pandemic struck, closing that door. However, Marlo’s resilience shone through as he turned this setback into an opportunity. “During the quarantine, using a LA Germania home oven, I enhanced and improved my baking skills and discovered the handcrafted artisan breads using home tools and equipment,” he shares. This period saw the birth of his “Artisan Bread Basket Online Store,” where he sold his creations online to generate income during those challenging times.

Marlo’s faith has been a guiding force throughout his journey. “I was inspired by the grace of God. Despite huge challenges and obstacles, God never left me,” he expresses. The pandemic brought moments of anxiety and depression, especially when his overseas work plans fell through. Yet, his love for bread, rooted in childhood memories, kept him going. “I love breads since my childhood days,” he fondly reminisces.

One of Marlo’s proudest creations is a bread featuring the image of former

President Duterte. “My most favorite bread was the first artisan bread I made with the image design of former President Duterte,” he reveals. This creation symbolizes his journey’s start and his meticulous craftsmanship.

Marlo emphasizes the importance of patience in his work. “As an artisan baker, having the most patience from the beginning of the process to the finished output is crucial,” he advises. He also underscores the significance of maintaining calm in challenging situations. “The biggest challenge in work is how to remain calm in different situations,” he says, sharing his reliance on faith. “We cannot assure our personal dreams and plans, but His is perfect and precious.”

Discipline, integrity, a positive attitude, hard work, and prayers are the pillars of Marlo’s success. “These are the following characteristics that are a must to take on, especially in baking. There’s nothing impossible if you trust the process to grow,” he concludes.

Currently residing in Bohol with his wife, Marlo is navigating a period of unemployment. “As of the moment, I am no longer connected to a company and it’s been two months since I haven’t had a job,” he mentions. Despite this, Marlo remains hopeful and steadfast in his belief that better opportunities are on the horizon.

Filipino band emerges stronger after viral controversy rocks music scene

In 2023, the name Red Santiago became synonymous with controversy in the Filipino music scene. The Gen Z musician, known for his unapologetic embrace of the “emo” genre, sparked widespread debate when he declared his music style as “EROCK.” This proclamation, intended as an homage to the emo genre, instead led to a whirlwind of public backlash, memes, and even death threats. Yet, out of this chaos, a new persona was born: Erock.

Reflecting on the tumultuous period, Erock acknowledges the impact of his words.

“I was exploring intensely the depth of the genre at the time,” he shares with The Global Filipino Magazine, “and now, as a way to commemorate how this issue changed my life and profession, I chose to switch my name from Red Santiago to Erock.” This decision was not just about rebranding; it was a deliberate move to embrace the very experience that had initially shaken his career.

The internet was quick to react, with Filipino netizens coining various nicknames for Erock, from “E-nggot” to “E-pal.” Despite the harsh criticism, Erock remained focused on his music.

“My life is music,” he says simply. “Since I enjoy what I do, I started this. What other people think of me doesn’t concern me.”

This determination saw him through some dark times, including the closure of certain opportunities, but also opened doors to new ones.

During the peak of the controversy, Erock formed the band Red Scarlet. Initially a three-piece outfit with Dwight

Maputi and Shin Catapang, the band faced challenges, particularly in securing a regular bassist. Temporary sessionists filled the gap until the arrival of Mochi Molina in September 2023. However, the band’s lineup continued to evolve, with Dwight stepping down due to his academic commitments and Lem Tomayao stepping in as the drummer.

Red Scarlet’s perseverance paid off when they embarked on their first promotional tour in Iloilo City and Antique in November 2023. This was followed by performances at The Last Rakrakan Festival 2023 and the first Emo Fest in the Philippines. The latter event, held at SM Skydome, SM North Edsa, Quezon City, was particularly significant for Erock, as he had a chance to meet Steve Badiola of Typecast. “Know your goals and just focus on them,” Steve advised, a sentiment that resonated deeply with Erock.

However, the journey was far from smooth. By early 2024, all of the original members had left the band due to conflicting work and school schedules, leaving Erock to rebuild Red Scarlet from scratch. He recruited new members from Bagong Silang, Caloocan: Jeremy Dela Cruz on drums, Kurt Velasco on lead guitar, Mark Steven Senobio on bass, and Gyo Dellosa on rhythm guitar. This new lineup brought renewed energy and commitment to the band, which now blends emo rock with metalcore influences from bands like Suicide Silence, Bullet for My Valentine, and Alesana.

In an interview, Erock discussed the challenges he faced during the controversy. “I was mocked, abandoned,

and alone,” he recalls. “But these circumstances clearly showed who my true friends are.” When asked about the death threats he received, he explained, “At first, we got scared, but due to legal advice from the authorities, we recorded it and submitted the names. If ever physical harm occurs, at least there are records.”

Erock’s resilience is echoed by his bandmates. Bassist Mark Steven Senobio, who favors blues and metalcore, sees a bright future for Red Scarlet. “I would say we are performing on bigger stages and outside of the country,” he says, expressing his hope for the band’s trajectory. Lead guitarist Kurt Velasco, a metal enthusiast, shares a similar vision, predicting that in three years, Red Scarlet will be “making people do moshes and bangs on bigger stages.”

Despite the controversies, the band remains united in their goal of creating music that resonates with their audience. “We love Erock,” says Mark Steven. “We focus on our goals and our team. Nothing more to say.”

Red Scarlet is currently working on their first EP, Blood Curse, set to be released in the first quarter of 2025. The EP will feature four songs, each exploring themes of judgment, despair, and the quest for justice. The title track, inspired by the events surrounding the crucifixion of Jesus, reflects the feelings of being judged unfairly and subjected to mockery.

The first single from the EP, “Eto Ka,” is set to drop on August 30, 2024. Written by the band’s manager and songwriter, Inah Muñoz, in response to the EROCK controversy, the song captures the experience of being bullied and judged, but ultimately rising above it all. “It demonstrates how he overcomes every obstacle and proves to everyone that he is capable of standing tall,” explains Erock.

Other tracks on the EP, like “Hands of Love” and “Blame Me, Hate Me,” delve into personal struggles and the emotional turmoil of toxic relationships. The final track, “You Cheated Me Like Hell,” draws from Inah Muñoz’s own experiences of betrayal in marriage.

As Red Scarlet moves forward, Erock remains focused on his goals, undeterred by the noise of social media. “They can think whatever they want to think about Erock,” says Kurt. “Because on our end, Erock is a worthy and good person to keep.”

Eugene Paul Domaluan

Making music abroad: How a Filipino rapper found his voice in Dubai

For many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), life abroad often means balancing multiple passions. This is especially true for Eugene Paul Domaluan, a 32-yearold Dubai-based Business Development Manager at Eco Sober House in Boston, USA.

While he excels in his professional life, Eugene also harbors a deep love for hiphop and rap music, a passion he has nurtured since childhood. Living abroad for ten years, Eugene’s journey into the music scene is as inspiring as it is unique.

Eugene’s fascination with hip-hop and rap began at a young age.

“I’ve been in love with music since I was very young, regardless of genre, but really fell in deep love with Hip-Hop/ Rap music,” he shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.

The personas of hip-hop artists initially piqued his interest, but it was the wordplay, flow, and storytelling that truly captivated him. Despite his parents urging him to tone it down, Eugene was hooked.

“For me, hip-hop music sends me on a different universe every time. It’s like everybody got an idea what hip-hop/rap

is but not all will understand the art of it. Luckily for me, it came naturally and from there it never left my ears.”

Eugene did not initially plan to base his music career in Dubai, but the city turned out to be the perfect fit for his artistry.

“I believe it’s the universe aligning itself for me,” he says.

Living in the UAE when he decided to release his tracks, Eugene found that his music, mostly in English, resonated well in a land of expats.

“The local scene here is unbelievable, it blows my mind the level of talent here. If you visit SOLE DXB’s yearly event, you will witness great local artists and because of that, it inspires me to produce quality music.”

Balancing work and passion

Though passionate about music, Eugene still maintains a full-time job. He works remotely as a Business Development Manager, which he juggles alongside his music career.

“If God’s will want me to be a full-time artist, I will accept it. But for now, like most of us Filipinos living in Dubai, I have a job which is thankfully remote and follows EST time,” he explains.

This schedule allows Eugene to be productive during the day while working from 5 PM to 1 AM.

“Between commitments of having a job, going to church weekly, making music, staying fit, and still being actively social, I always thank God for just giving me PEACE.”

Eugene’s musical style is influenced by a diverse array of artists.

“I can throw a lot of names but here’s a ‘couple’: Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda, Eminem, MGK, JayZ, Drake, Kendrick, Mac Miller, J.Cole, and Francis M. But my biggest influence is Bone Thugs-nHarmony,” he says.

These artists have shaped Eugene’s approach to music, reflecting his life experiences in his sounds.

A growing discography

Eugene has released several tracks on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. He is particularly proud of his collaboration with RETAMI, a young artist from Poland.

“We did two tracks together already, just the fact that I met this guy online and

we create this music where he raps in Polish and I rap in English and Tagalog— the result is what Gen Z calls these days, FIRE!”

Their latest track, “Back to Bizzack,” has performed well compared to his other releases.

Story behind the songs

Eugene’s music often carries personal stories and inspirations. His latest solo track, “BLESSED E,” is a testament to his journey and faith.

“It’s a bit of storytelling—how I always wanted to RAP but situations did not fit my aspirations. In the second verse, I explain that this talent doesn’t belong to me; it was given by God to be used correctly.”

Eugene is excited about his upcoming projects, including collaborations with Filipino artists based in Dubai.

“These individuals are well connected to Filipino artists back home and have been doing it for quite some time. I’m sure I will learn some valuable tricks of the trade while we create magic in the studio,” he shares enthusiastically.

Being a Filipino rapper in Dubai comes with its challenges.

“My target is always the Filipino audience, but my lyrics are mostly in English and my references are mostly foreign. I do understand at times they just don’t feel it, and that’s totally fine for me,” he acknowledges.

Despite these challenges, Eugene finds joy in knowing that his music reaches listeners.

“Knowing last month there were 500 different people listening to my music is enough achievement. End of the day, I will do me and make sure to give it 110%.”
