Dubai-based Filipino couple turns passion for accounting into a growing business

Working overseas often presents both immense challenges and remarkable opportunities. For many Filipinos, it’s a path that leads to new beginnings, career growth, and even the chance to build something meaningful from the ground up. Such was the case for Atty. Dexter Destajo and his wife, Janice Destajo, who not only found success in their careers abroad but also formed a formidable business partnership.

In 2010, in the bustling city of Dubai, these two like-minded professionals crossed paths, leading to both a strong personal relationship and the eventual establishment of Livesync Accounting FZ LLC. Today, they are the power couple behind this thriving accounting outsourcing firm, serving clients across the UAE and beyond. Their shared journey is a blend of faith, hard work, and perseverance, built over years of professional and personal growth in a foreign land.

“We met in Dubai in 2010 and got married in 2012. Today, we are blessed with a 9-year-old son and have been running our own business for a decade now,” Dexter, a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a practicing lawyer, with a tone of gratitude, shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.

Together, the couple has nurtured a company that stands as a testament to the capabilities of Filipino entrepreneurs abroad. Livesync Accounting, founded in 2014, now employs 40 qualified Filipino accountants and serves clients across the Middle East, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

Both Dexter and Janice bring years of expertise to the table. Dexter, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from the University of San Carlos in Cebu City in 1999, passed the CPA Board in 2000. He later earned a degree in Law from the University of Cebu, passing the Philippine Bar in 2007. His first venture abroad was in 2009, with a visit visa sponsored by his brother.

“I originally wanted to take a break before setting up my law practice in the Philippines, but I received an offer to work as a Group Accounting Manager in a metal trading company here in Dubai,” he recalls.

Janice, who holds a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, followed her sister to the UAE in 2005.

“I came to help provide for my family. My sister was already here, and she sponsored my visit visa,” Janice says.

After working as an accountant in a hypermarket chain in Sharjah and an automotive company in Dubai, she eventually earned her MBA from the Geneva Business School in Switzerland in 2021. Today, she is the HR and Admin Director of their company, balancing her role as a businesswoman with her family life.

Running Livesync Accounting is no easy feat, but it is something the couple is deeply passionate about.

“It is a great blessing to be partners in life and in business,” Janice expresses. “We are happy to mentor young professional accountants and help fellow business owners run their businesses smoothly through our online accounting services.”

The satisfaction that comes from helping others thrive in their businesses is a key motivator for the couple.

Working abroad has opened doors for the Destasjos, offering them opportunities they might not have found in the Philippines.

“The UAE has a diverse workforce and provides great opportunities for professional growth, career advancement, and attractive compensation,” Dexter explains. Their experiences in the country played a significant role in their decision to set up their own accounting firm.

“Our UAE work experience has been invaluable in shaping Livesync Accounting,” he adds.

However, their journey was not without its struggles. Both Dexter and Janice faced numerous challenges when they first arrived in the UAE. “We went through several interviews and even had to change visas by traveling to Iran,” Dexter recounts.

Despite these hurdles, they were fortunate to have the support of their siblings who had already settled in the UAE. “Family is everything,” Janice emphasizes. “Now, our siblings have their own families here, and we all support one another.”

Faith has also played a vital role in their lives. As active members of The Lord’s Flock Catholic Charismatic Community and parishioners at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubai, they credit their spiritual community for keeping them grounded. “Being surrounded by people of faith has led us closer to God and taught us to be good stewards of our time, talents, and treasures,” shares Janice.

Looking ahead, the couple plans to continue expanding their accounting business both in the UAE and the Philippines. “We hope to explore other opportunities, such as real estate and agriculture,” Dexter says. Their vision extends beyond personal success, as they aim to continue mentoring and providing employment opportunities to their fellow Filipinos.

For their kababayans abroad, Dexter and Janice offer a piece of advice: “Working abroad is very challenging, but if we surrender our dreams to God and live according to His plan, things will be easier. Stay connected to Him and trust in His guidance.”

Lance J. W. Kosca

Meet the Filipino astrophysicist shaping the future of space exploration in the UAE

Astrophysics is not a field for the faint of heart, and neither is the journey to becoming an expert in this highly specialized area. Yet, despite the challenges, Lance J. W. Kosca has embraced this path, turning his passion for discovery and innovation into a thriving career. He is currently working as a research assistant and astrophysicist at Khalifa University in the UAE.

“I became a UAE kid after following my father here in 2007, when I was only 8 years old,” Lance shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.

Growing up in the UAE while maintaining strong ties to his Filipino roots shaped his unique worldview.

“My parents never let me forget my Filipino identity: at home, we spoke Tagalog, and we’d go to the Philippines for holidays when we could.”

This duality of experience allowed him to remain connected to his heritage while integrating into a different cultural environment.

Lance’s academic path took him to Ateneo de Manila University, where he pursued a double degree in Physics and Materials Engineering. However, his journey post-graduation was far from linear.

“After graduating in 2022 with a degree in Applied Physics and Materials Science,

I embarked on what has been my most challenging journey yet: transitioning from being a fresh graduate to an astrophysicist.”

Despite his impressive academic credentials, Lance faced a barrage of rejections in his early job search.

“I aimed to pursue a career in renewable energy in the Philippines, believing it to be my true calling,” he reflects. But after countless rejected applications, he realized the need to broaden his horizons, eventually finding himself back in the UAE.

The turning point came when he received an email from a professor at Khalifa University, and after a successful interview, Lance landed a coveted position as an astrophysicist.

“I honestly never expected myself to end up becoming an astrophysicist,” he admits. His mentor, Dr. Marko Gacesa, who had previously worked at NASA, played a pivotal role in shaping Lance’s career. “He told me about his ongoing project on researching survival systems and scenarios for Mars, and I was able to connect it to my love for renewable energy.” The opportunity to work on cutting-edge space projects was an unexpected but welcome turn in Lance’s career.

Currently, Lance is involved in several high-profile projects at Khalifa University.

“From what I’m allowed to share, we’re working on what is basically a breathing machine for Mars that is able to use the Martian atmosphere to breathe,” he reveals.

This same technology could also have significant applications on Earth, including decarbonizing the atmosphere. Lance is also taking on leadership roles within the research community.

“Perhaps the biggest, most unexpected experience I’ve had so far is that I was entrusted to become CEO of an upcoming startup,” he says. This early responsibility is both humbling and exciting for the young astrophysicist.

Working alongside Ph.D. holders and UAE nationals on space projects was initially daunting for Lance.

“It was nerve-wracking,” he admits. “But as my mentors gained more confidence in me, I gained more confidence in my abilities.” The pressure of working in the UAE’s top-ranked university alongside people who had worked at NASA or had asteroids named after them was

immense. However, Lance quickly adapted and now takes pride in his role, representing the Philippines within this highly talented and diverse team.

“I owe it to the brilliant Filipino minds I’ve met to do well here and make it easier for them to shine in the UAE and in the global academia,” he says with pride.

Despite his early success, Lance remains grounded in the challenges he faces, both professionally and personally.

“Fighting against impostor syndrome telling me that I am out of my league in this job, as well as missing the really close friends and loved ones that I left back in the Philippines, are the biggest challenges,” he shares. Fortunately, he finds comfort in staying connected with his Filipino friends in the UAE, and in the small Filipino community at Khalifa University.

For Lance, the most rewarding part of his job is the trust and responsibility that have been placed in him so early in his career. “As early in my career as now, I’ve been trusted in executive roles in highimpact, and I believe soon-to-be highprofile projects,” he notes. Being put in charge of rebranding the research center he works in and leading a startup are just some of the roles he’s taken on. “It’s a wonderful feeling when your managers recognize your potential,” he says.

Looking ahead, Lance sees his career continuing to grow within the fields of astrophysics and renewable energy. He hopes to make a significant impact on both the UAE’s space initiatives and the global science community, while also bridging the gap between Filipino scientists and opportunities in global academia. He’s also passionate about founding his own renewable energy startup in the Philippines, using his knowledge and skills to directly benefit his home country.

For young aspiring scientists and engineers, Lance’s advice is clear: “Life almost always makes you fail. Be ready to get rejected from the job you really wanted to get, the scholarship you were hoping to be awarded.” His own experience of failing and adapting has taught him the value of perseverance. “You can’t be afraid of getting fired from being a clickbait article writer at 23 if you want to be an astrophysicist and startup CEO at 24,” he says with a laugh. Embracing failure and learning from it has been key to his success, and it’s a lesson he hopes others will take to heart. After all, as he wisely notes, “It is the darkness of outer space that makes its stars shine bright.”

Rodel Doromal

An OFW auto technician in Dubai uses rap to inspire fellow overseas workers

Working as an automotive technician requires precision, focus, and commitment—skills that are second nature to Rodel Doromal. For the past eight years, he has been plying his trade as an auto technician at Royal Swiss Auto Services, honing his expertise. Doromal began his journey abroad as a trainee technician at Audi Al Nabooda Automobiles, but his story goes far beyond the workshop. As someone passionate about his craft, Doromal has also made a name for himself as a rapper, using his experiences as an OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker) to fuel his creativity.

“I want to inspire,” Doromal says, explaining his life mantra. His determination to make an impact is evident in both his profession and his music. For Doromal, rap is more than just a hobby; it’s a way to share his voice and connect with people who face the same struggles.

“Working as an OFW is one of the reasons why I want to share my music with everyone,” he shares with The Global Filipino Magazine, describing how the challenges of being separated from loved ones and adapting to new cultures have shaped him.

Doromal’s music speaks to the reality of life, drawing inspiration from his own experiences as an OFW.

“Facing challenges on a daily basis, being separated from my loved ones, doing everything on my own, adapting to new cultures, and dealing with

homesickness—these are the things that inspire me and make me stronger. I want to pass that energy on and inspire more people through my music. We can make it if we believe in ourselves,” he adds.

His songs, like “Imulat Mo” and “Bagong Bayani,” are deeply rooted in themes of resilience, societal issues, and empowerment.

“When I’m writing rap lyrics, I always speak the truth, the reality of life. The challenges we’re facing right now, current events, our society’s problems—I want to open their consciousness and change their perspective using my music. Everyone has a voice; it’s up to you how you’re gonna use it,” he emphasizes.

Balancing his career as an automotive technician and his passion for rapping isn’t easy, but Doromal has found a way to make it work.

“Working on cars is a very complicated job. If you miss or forget something, you’ll put your customer and their family in danger. That’s why I have to stay focused,” he explains. “But if an idea related to my music comes to mind while I’m at work, I just make a quick note on my phone and write it down so I can focus back on my job. When I get home, I check it and work on it.”

Doromal uses his free time during the weekdays to write lyrics and devotes his weekends to recording or shooting music videos.

“It’s about time management,” he says. “If there’s a hip-hop event or gathering, I always save the date so I can perform and share my talent with the Filipino hiphop community in the UAE and promote my music.”

Having grown up listening to rap legends like Andrew E, Kruzzada, and Salbakuta,

Doromal developed an early passion for the genre. “I’ve been listening to rap music since I can remember. I’m really passionate about how rap artists transfer their thoughts into music in a creative way,” he shares. “Years passed by, and rap music became deeper—the topics were more serious, more eye-opening. I said to myself, ‘I want to be like them.’ That’s when I decided to write and make my own music.”

Doromal admits that pursuing his dream of becoming a rapper while working abroad has not been without its challenges. “Before, if you didn’t have connections or weren’t signed to a big record label, you had no promotions, no contract, no radio airtime, no future in the rap industry. That’s why I stopped making music and pursued my career as an auto technician.”

However, a life-changing car accident three years ago reignited his passion. “I survived, and God gave me a second chance to follow what I really love to do,” Doromal says. He credits his friend Imani Vici, who owns a home studio, for pushing him to make music again and helping him join the group Gang of Dream (GOD).

Now, Doromal and his team, including Jordan and Rhidge, are navigating the independent music scene. “Without the help of big recording labels, we promote ourselves, shoot, and edit our own videos. It’s not easy because there’s no production team, no big companies sponsoring us. But all the sacrifices are worth it after we see the final outcome,” he reflects. “As long as someone wants to hear me rap, I won’t stop making music.”

For Doromal, it all boils down to passion. “If you’re passionate about what you’re doing, you won’t get tired of it.”

Jacob Ernest Tolentino

From the kitchen to the stage: How a chief cook abroad found his calling in music

Working as a Chief Cook aboard an international passenger ship, Jacob Ernest Tolentino, also known as Jay Tolentino, has successfully blended two distinct worlds: culinary arts and music. Born in Bayanan, Muntinlupa, Jay has steadily pursued his passion for songwriting and music production despite the demands of his profession.

A member of the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (FILSCAP) since 2019, Jay’s musical journey began early. Growing up in Sta. Maria, Bulacan, he discovered his love for music and sports during his high school and college years. “Music and sports have always been a big part of my life. I played several instruments— guitar, keyboard, ukulele, and drums— and participated in volleyball and table tennis,” he shared. His talent in sports earned him the Athlete of the Year Award in 2001 at the Philippine College of Arts and Technology, where he also received the Excellence in Volleyball Award. But it was in music where his heart truly lay.

At 18, Jay began writing songs, a natural evolution from his earlier passion for writing short stories and poetry. “I found songwriting easier than writing long scripts or books,” he admitted. Over time, music became his primary outlet for expression, and by 2019, he had begun releasing his original songs on various digital platforms. “It felt liberating to finally share my music with the world. Since then, I’ve participated in numerous

music events like open mic sessions and busking performances, which have helped me grow as an artist,” he recalled.

Jay’s dedication to his craft has garnered him recognition in the music industry. In 2022, he was awarded the “Remarkable Indie Artist and Composer of the Year” at the 3rd Southeast Asian Achievement Award held at the Manila Grand Opera Casino and Hotel. He was also a weekly finalist in the “A Song of Praise Music Festival” in 2018 for his song “Diyos Na Banal.”

Though he is a chef by profession, music is where Jay’s true passion lies. His musical influences range from acoustic icon Nyoy Volante, who he describes as his hero, to international songwriters like Max Martin and Jorgen Elofson. He also draws inspiration from Christian music artists such as Hillsong and Gary Valenciano. “Nyoy Volante was a big inspiration for me. I told myself if he could write and perform his own songs, then I could, too,” Jay explained. His admiration for these artists shaped his own songwriting style, particularly in the genres of OPM (Original Pilipino Music) and Christian music.

Despite his growing success, Jay remains grounded and focused on improving his skills. He continues to attend training and seminars to refine his expertise in music arrangement and production. “I believe in constantly learning and growing. That’s why I still study and attend workshops to hone my craft,” he shared. His ambition extends beyond

personal achievement; Jay dreams of becoming a full-fledged music producer and writing songs for other artists. “Helping others through my music is my ultimate goal,” he said.

In addition to his musical achievements, Jay has graced various platforms as a guest artist. He has performed on Net 25’s Online Music Festival, UNTV 37’s ASOP Music Festival, and DZME 1530’s “Love Diaries.” He has also been featured on Euro TV’s “Likha Musika” and FILSCAP’s open mic sessions in notable venues such as The Brewery in BGC and Handlebar in Makati.

When asked about his advice for aspiring songwriters, Jay emphasized the importance of starting without delay. “You don’t have to be great to begin. You have to begin to be great,” he said. He encourages young songwriters to keep practicing and refining their craft, stating, “Write and write songs, attend seminars, and join groups related to songwriting. The more you immerse yourself in music, the easier it becomes because you love what you’re doing.”

Now docked in Japan, Jay balances his work as a chef with his musical endeavors, continually striving to share his original compositions with the world. For him, every song released is a privilege, and the joy it brings to others is his greatest reward. He believes that his passion for music, coupled with faith and perseverance, has helped him achieve his dreams.

Mariben Christine Tan Eustaquio

Turning visions into reality: How a Filipina business setup expert is helping entrepreneurs succeed in Dubai

Navigating the world of business setup in a city as dynamic as Dubai requires a deep understanding of both local regulations and the entrepreneurial spirit that drives success. Mariben Christine Tan Eustaquio, as the Founder and Managing Director of EZONE Business Setup, has spent nearly 15 years honing these skills. Her journey in Dubai, however, began not as a career move but as a personal one, following her husband’s work assignment. “I came because my husband was assigned here 15 years ago, and since then, Dubai has become our second home,” she reflects, unaware at the time that she would soon embark on a path to guide entrepreneurs toward success.

Eustaquio’s career has been nothing short of diverse and enriching. With three bachelor’s degrees in Psychology, Legal Management, and Nursing, she was a registered nurse in the Philippines. Yet, life had different plans for her. “I initially worked in the financial industry after university,” she recalled. Armed with Series 7 and Series 63 licenses from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) in the US, she began her career as a stockbroker. However, her journey took a sharp turn when she relocated to Dubai, choosing to focus on raising her three young children at the time.

Eventually, Mariben ventured into a field unfamiliar to her—business setup. “When I began my career in Dubai, I found myself in a completely new and unfamiliar field— Business Setup,” she explained. The shift was both challenging and rewarding. It allowed her to use her legal background in unexpected ways and opened her eyes to a passion for supporting fellow entrepreneurs. What truly stood out to her were the people she met along the way. “I saw them face challenges, experience failures, and ultimately

succeed because of their unwavering belief in their dreams. Their resilience and passion deeply inspired me,” she shared. This connection to people, their dreams, and their growth became the foundation of her work at EZONE.

Empowering Entrepreneurs: A Career with Purpose

Mariben found her calling in helping people transform their dreams into reality. As the head of EZONE Business Setup, she works with aspiring entrepreneurs who are ready to step outside their comfort zones. “What I truly enjoy about my current career is witnessing the transformation that happens when people take the leap to follow their dreams,” she said. Her role is more than just setting up businesses—it’s about nurturing growth, resilience, and self-discovery among the entrepreneurs she works with. “They grow in ways they didn’t expect, developing new skills, building resilience, and finding a deeper sense of purpose.”

This dedication stems from her belief in the transformative power of entrepreneurship. “I’m passionate about entrepreneurship and the incredible impact it has on individuals and society,” she emphasized. She sees her work as part of a larger mission to shape the future not only of the entrepreneurs she

supports but also of the communities they contribute to. This is especially evident in her passion for the UAE, which has provided her with a platform to pursue her own dreams while helping others. “The UAE has created a space where everyone can feel at home, even if it’s not their home country,” Mariben remarked.

Living in Dubai has given her the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life and learn from their diverse cultures. “It’s remarkable how the UAE fosters an environment where anyone, regardless of their nationality or background, can be who they want, pursue what they’re passionate about, and achieve success without limits,” she added. She credits Dubai’s welcoming and inclusive nature for enabling her to grow as an entrepreneur and an individual, while also giving back to the community she loves. “More importantly, the UAE has given me the opportunity to become an entrepreneur and grow in ways I never imagined,” she said.

Overcoming Struggles and Finding Strength

Like many overseas workers, Mariben’s journey has not been without challenges. She candidly shared the struggles she faced before settling into her new life. “Life often throws unexpected challenges our way,” she reflected. Whether it was career setbacks or personal crises, she learned that the way we respond to these obstacles defines who we are. “What kept me going was the belief that each challenge was a lesson—a stepping stone to becoming a better version of myself,” she said.

Her greatest source of strength came from her support network—her family, mentors, and friends. “I wasn’t alone during these tough times. I had the unwavering support of my family, mentors, and friends who believed in me even when I doubted myself,” Mariben noted. With their guidance, she was able to navigate difficult moments and grow both personally and professionally.

One of the most important lessons she has learned is the value of protecting her mental health. “I realized that it’s okay to step away from situations or environments that no longer serve us,” she explained. By prioritizing her well-being, she was able to maintain her passion for her work and continue empowering others.

Inspiring Fellow Filipinos

Looking ahead, Mariben has no immediate plans to leave Dubai. The UAE has become her family’s home, and

it offers them a sense of security and growth. But her focus is shifting towards giving back, particularly to the Filipino community in the UAE. “I’m passionate about supporting my fellow Filipinos here in the UAE,” she said, adding that she actively participates in nonprofit organizations like the Philippine Business Council and the Filipino Social Club.

Mariben hopes to inspire other Filipinos to take pride in who they are and what they can achieve. “My hope is to inspire Filipinos to inspire one another—to take pride in who we are and where we come from,” she emphasized. Through her work, she aims to uplift the Filipino image globally, showcasing their resilience, talent, and culture.

Her advice to fellow kababayans (countrymen) who are struggling abroad is simple but powerful: “Practice the attitude of gratitude.” For her, gratitude is not just about appreciating the good things in life but recognizing the lessons and growth that come from challenges. “Gratitude should be woven into the fabric of our daily lives,” she said, adding that it opens the heart to positivity and blessings.

Aaron Sanchez

Filipino coach in Dubai finds fulfillment in shaping young athletes’ lives

As the Head Coach of Champs Academy, Aaron Sanchez, also known as ‘Coach Ron,’ has spent the last 17 years abroad, cultivating his love for basketball and mentoring young athletes in the UAE. His journey in Dubai began in 2007 when he was just 23 years old, and basketball quickly became both his passion and his profession. “I discovered I am good at coaching too; it’s like I know a good player when I see one or a player that has potential,” Sanchez shared with The Global Filipino Magazine. One of the highlights of his career was being selected to form and lead Team Pilipinas UAE at the Abu Dhabi International Basketball Championship, a moment that allowed him to represent Filipinos in the UAE proudly.

Sanchez’s decision to work abroad wasn’t planned. He moved to the UAE to join his two sisters, who believed he had a brighter future there. “Basketball became the gateway for me to land a job as an office assistant,” he said. Although his first job had little to do with his passion, Sanchez stayed connected to the sport by playing and representing his company’s basketball team. Adjusting to administrative tasks such as using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint was a challenge. “To be honest, I’m not a techy person,” Sanchez admitted, but his dedication

helped him navigate these unfamiliar waters.

Back in his hometown of Obando, Bulacan, Sanchez gives back by hosting free basketball clinics whenever he visits. “It’s so nice to actually share my blessings and knowledge with the younger generation,” he remarked. His initiative has garnered support from local government officials, including Mayor Ding Valeda. Beyond basketball, Sanchez and his family also distribute food and groceries to street children and those in need. “Seeing my kids being so passionate about it makes me such a proud dad,” he said.

As a basketball coach, Sanchez finds immense joy in being able to combine work with his passion. “Being in the court is my happy place,” he explained, adding that teaching kids and watching them grow both as players and individuals is the most satisfying part of his job. He cherishes the moments when he can witness firsthand the achievements of the children he mentors. “Making that small impact in the life of one child is so priceless,” Sanchez said, emphasizing the fulfillment he derives from his role.

Working overseas has opened countless opportunities for Sanchez. “I became the best version of myself when I became

an OFW,” he shared, acknowledging the personal growth and resilience that comes from adjusting to a new culture and navigating the challenges of expatriate life. One of the perks of working abroad for Sanchez is the ability to travel, which he enjoys immensely. “One of my favorite cities in the world is Paris; seeing the Eiffel Tower was such a dream come true,” he revealed.

However, Sanchez’s journey was not without struggles. “I will never forget when I got laid off from my first job. It was the most devastating part of my career,” he recalled. The 2008 recession made job-hunting difficult, and he even considered returning to the Philippines. But with the support of his family, especially his wife, he found hope in a part-time coaching opportunity, which ultimately reignited his passion for the sport. “When God closes one door, He opens another—a better one,” Sanchez reflected, crediting his faith and family for helping him through tough times.

Looking ahead, Sanchez has no plans to leave Dubai. “Dubai is my second home. It’s where I started a family and fulfilled my dreams,” he said. He hopes to continue living and working in the city that has unlocked so many opportunities for him.

For fellow Filipinos facing hardships abroad, Sanchez offered words of encouragement: “We all experience heartbreak and moments when we just want to give up, but we find a reason not to.” He advises keeping one’s circle small and trustworthy and focusing on personal goals. “When you think your prayers aren’t being answered, be grateful—that’s God’s protection. Trust in the Lord, and He will never forsake you,” he concluded, imparting the wisdom that has guided him through his own journey.

Jan Jervy Marquez

How an unintended stay abroad turned an OFW’s journey into a thriving career

Never intending to work overseas, fate had its own way of guiding him toward new horizons. Jan Jervy Marquez, now a Guest Relations Officer at the prestigious Rixos Bab Al Bahr in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, found his unplanned journey abroad turning into an adventure filled with both challenges and successes, shaping him into the person he is today.

“I never intended to stay abroad for long,” he admits to The Global Filipino Magazine, reflecting on how it all began.

A visit to a friend in Dubai turned into an extended stay when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, grounding him in the UAE. During the early lockdown days, Jan Jervy decided to take a job as a Fitness Center Receptionist at his favorite gym. The role suited his lifestyle well, as he was actively involved in modeling and pageantry at the time, and keeping fit was essential.

“It’s like killing two birds with one stone,” he shares.

However, after a year, his curiosity and drive for new challenges led him to pursue a position as a Guest Relations Officer at Rixos Bab Al Bahr, where he has been ever since.

His role at the hotel requires excellent communication skills, a positive outlook, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Jan Jervy finds joy in interacting with guests from diverse backgrounds and cultures, making their stay memorable.

“We are the face of the hotel,” he explains,

noting the importance of carrying the hotel’s core values in every guest interaction.

Taking unintended steps abroad

Unlike many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who intentionally seek opportunities abroad, Jan Jervy’s decision to remain in the UAE was shaped by circumstance.

“I didn’t intend to work abroad,” he reflects, but the opportunities that presented themselves during the pandemic made him stay.

For him, being abroad offered avenues for self-improvement and personal growth that he couldn’t ignore.

“I have always had the mentality to be a better version of myself than I was yesterday,” he adds.

Jan Jervy’s earlier career in the Philippines revolved around modeling and pageantry, where he gained exposure to a different world.

“It opened my eyes to new perspectives,” he says. His involvement in this industry sparked his passion for raising awareness on issues like environmental conservation and self-improvement. He later ventured into event planning and coordination, managing over 500 events in eight years, which took him across Asia and eventually to the UAE.

“Being part of the event industry gave me self-fulfillment,” he reflects, noting how it deepened his belief in love and commitment.

Now, as a Guest Relations Officer, Jan Jervy is in his element, bringing positive vibes to every interaction.

“I think, from the very start of my life, I have always loved to pass positive vibes,” he says. For him, the most satisfying part of his job is knowing that he can make someone’s experience at the hotel special.

“It gives me great pleasure and satisfaction that I get to touch their lives with my simple gesture of help.”

Working abroad has also provided Jan Jervy with a fast-paced lifestyle that keeps him motivated. He enjoys the action-driven environment of the UAE, where personal and professional growth is constant. “The life here is fast-paced. There are no dramas, just the focus to improve yourself,” he remarks.

Like many OFWs, Jan Jervy faced significant struggles during his early

days abroad, particularly financial ones.

“I came here during the pandemic, and the first company I worked with was on the rocks,” he recalls. Salaries were delayed, and then the fitness center he worked at closed down. He was jobless for two months, during a time when job opportunities were scarce. Fortunately, an opportunity in the hotel industry came his way, and he has since built a stable career.

Looking ahead

Despite his successes in the UAE, Jan Jervy envisions returning to his roots in the Philippines.

“As a Filipino, pipiliin ko pa rin ang Pilipinas!” he declares. He dreams of retiring in his hometown in Quezon province, living a peaceful life on a small farm, and continuing his advocacy for environmental sustainability.

“I would like to volunteer in environmental causes or be a part of Environmental NGOs,” he shares.

Jan Jervy offers heartfelt advice to his fellow Filipinos abroad.

“There is always light at the end of the tunnel,” he assures. He encourages them to hold on to their dreams, as every struggle will eventually lead to a brighter future.

“Rejection will take you places that acceptance won’t,” he adds, urging others to see the value in life’s challenges.

His final message is a reminder to choose happiness and authenticity. “Always believe in yourself, and do whatever makes you happy,” he says.

Dennis Del Rosario

From the Philippines to the UAE: How a nurse’s leadership is transforming emergency care

Working as a Senior Emergency Nurse and Resuscitation Team Leader in a fast-paced healthcare environment overseas demands quick decision-making, leadership, and a deep commitment to patient care. In this role, Dennis Del Rosario has spent 16 years honing his skills, from his beginnings in the Philippines to his current position at SEHA Tawam Hospital in the UAE, where he continually strives to improve healthcare standards on a global scale.

Dennis began working abroad in 2012 as an ER Registered Nurse at Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) Hospital. This transition allowed him to apply his skills in a larger and more diverse environment, pushing him to new professional heights. Reflecting on this experience, he shared with The Global Filipino Magazine, “Working abroad presented me with challenges that pushed me beyond my comfort zone. I wanted to grow, not only as a nurse but as a leader.” This desire to grow continues to shape his career trajectory.

In 2017, Dennis took on his current role at Tawam Hospital, where he now manages a team of highly skilled nurses and ensures the highest standards of care, particularly in trauma and emergency situations. His role as ER Resuscitation Team Leader requires quick thinking and decisive action in high-pressure situations, often life-or-death moments. “The emergency department is where my passion for patient care meets my love for leadership,” Dennis shared, describing the fast-paced environment that he thrives in.

One of the proudest moments of his career was being named one of the Top 100 Healthcare Professionals in the Middle East in 2024, a recognition that speaks to his dedication and leadership. This achievement came after years of commitment, including his voluntary efforts in the aftermath of the 2023 Turkey earthquake, where he helped provide critical care to those affected. In addition, Dennis has been involved in numerous initiatives at Tawam Hospital, including the wellness program that earned him the Wellbeing Champion of the Year Award. He also contributes to nursing research, presenting a study at the prestigious SEHA International Nursing, Midwifery, and Allied Health Conference. His research focuses on patient and nurse perceptions in multicultural healthcare settings, highlighting the importance of cultural sensitivity in delivering care.

Dennis’s academic achievements are equally impressive. He earned a Master of Arts in Nursing (MAN) in Adult Health Nursing from the University of the Philippines, where he graduated with a remarkable General Weighted Average (GWA) of 1.48. Currently, he is pursuing a Master of Science in Healthcare Management (MSc HCM) at SBS Swiss Business School, with completion expected by the end of 2024. His commitment to lifelong learning reflects his passion for continuous improvement. “Education has always been my key to success. I believe that to lead effectively, one must always keep learning and evolving,” he emphasized.

This relentless pursuit of excellence has also led him to acquire multiple professional licenses, including emergency nursing certifications in New Zealand and Australia. In addition, he holds certifications in Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). These credentials equip him to manage complex emergencies, while his leadership role at Tawam Hospital allows him to mentor others in the field.

But why did Dennis choose to work abroad, leaving behind his homeland and the Filipino healthcare system? For him, it was about stepping out of his comfort zone. “I wanted to grow as a nurse and bring back valuable experiences to contribute to the healthcare system in the Philippines,” he explained. His journey abroad has been marked by professional growth, but his heart remains in the Philippines, where he hopes to return one day to improve the country’s healthcare system.

Before moving to the UAE, Dennis’s career began at Tagudin General Hospital in the Philippines, where he worked as a Registered Nurse from 2008 to 2012. There, he developed the foundational skills that have served him throughout his career. In addition to his clinical duties, he organized outreach programs to serve underserved communities, showcasing his commitment to giving back.

Reflecting on his career trajectory, Dennis is quick to acknowledge the many challenges he faced, both in his professional and personal life. “I come from a broken family, and my mother raised us alone under difficult circumstances,” he shared. Despite these hardships, Dennis remained determined

to succeed. He balanced school with selling chocolates and vegetables to contribute to the family income. The struggles were many, but his drive never wavered. “My mother’s sacrifices inspired me to push forward. I promised her that I would succeed, and that promise has guided me every day since.”

Throughout his years abroad, Dennis has had to navigate the challenges of adapting to new cultures and environments. He credits his support system for helping him through difficult times, particularly his faith and his strong connection to his family. “I owe everything to our Lord Jesus Christ. His presence has guided me through the toughest moments of my life,” Dennis said. This spiritual strength has been a constant source of inspiration throughout his career.

As for the future, Dennis’s aspirations are rooted in his desire to give back to the Philippines. He hopes to leverage the knowledge and experience he has gained abroad to improve healthcare services in underserved areas. In addition, he is passionate about advocating for mental health awareness among healthcare professionals. “The pressures of emergency care can take a toll on mental well-being, and I want to promote initiatives that support resilience in our profession,” he explained.

Long-term, Dennis hopes to contribute to policy development in the Philippines, particularly in improving healthcare infrastructure and training for healthcare workers. He is also deeply invested in nursing education and mentoring, with a vision of guiding the next generation of nurses to become leaders in their field.

At the heart of Dennis’s journey is a love for service, both to his patients and to the broader healthcare community. His commitment to continuous learning, leadership, and patient care has made him an invaluable asset in the UAE healthcare system, and his future plans demonstrate his desire to make a lasting impact on the healthcare landscape in the Philippines.

As Dennis reflects on his experiences abroad, he remains grateful for the opportunities he has had and the lessons he has learned. “Working overseas has allowed me to grow in ways I never imagined,” he said, “but my heart will always belong to the Philippines.”

Sid Reymond Rivera

How a young OFW overcame Dubai’s challenges to thrive in the real estate industry

Working in Dubai’s competitive real estate market demands resilience and adaptability, qualities that Sid Reymond Rivera, a Corporate Property Manager at Allsopp and Allsopp Real Estate Brokerage LLC, has honed over the years. His journey to this position, however, was far from easy.

Sid arrived in Dubai eight years ago, fresh out of the Philippines and ready to take on the world. He was just 21 years old, and like many overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), his main goal was to support his family back home. “Coming from a close-knit family, I was the eldest of my siblings, which meant I often felt a sense of responsibility, almost like a second parent,” Sid explains. The decision to move to Dubai was not just about personal growth, but also about securing a future for his loved ones.

However, his first job in Dubai as a telecom sales representative was far from what he had imagined. “I had only been in the city for a week when I got the job. Working under the scorching sun, sometimes in temperatures reaching 50 degrees, was something I never imagined I’d be doing. It was crazy!” Sid recalls. The adjustment wasn’t just physical, it

was also cultural. “I didn’t have any idea how to deal with people from so many different nationalities. I was completely out of my comfort zone, but I knew I had to make sales and promote the company’s services and products,” he adds. Those early days were tough, but they also shaped Sid into the person he is today. “There were moments that brought me to tears, but those moments also helped me gain the confidence I needed.”

Over time, Sid became more adept at navigating Dubai’s multicultural work environment. He learned how to collaborate with people from different backgrounds and cultures, which is crucial in a city as diverse as Dubai. “Embracing this diversity and learning to collaborate across cultures helped me quickly adapt to various communication styles and problem-solving approaches. Understanding cultural nuances in communication, whether it’s how feedback is given or how decisions are made, helps avoid misunderstandings. It also builds stronger relationships with people,” Sid explains.

Faith has been an essential part of Sid’s journey. “When the opportunity came to move to Dubai, I didn’t know exactly

what was in store for me, but I believed it was part of God’s plan,” he shares. His belief in a higher purpose helped him through the toughest of times. “When things didn’t go as planned, I leaned on the belief that everything happens for a reason. This perspective provided me peace, knowing setbacks are part of a bigger picture guided by God’s plan.”

Sid’s sense of responsibility extended beyond just surviving and thriving in Dubai. One of his proudest achievements is supporting his younger brother through his education. “He recently graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering and even passed his board exams. Knowing that my efforts helped him achieve his dreams is the greatest reward I could ask for,” Sid says. His brother’s success fueled his motivation and gave him a greater sense of purpose. “Each of his achievements became a source of pride, fueling my drive to set a strong example and create opportunities for both of us.”

Now, after years of hard work, Sid is enjoying the fruits of his labor. He recently purchased his own land and has begun to travel to countries he once only dreamed of visiting. Reflecting on his journey, Sid shares the most unexpected lesson he’s learned since moving to Dubai: “The power of adaptability. In a city as fast-paced and diverse as this, being flexible and open to change is crucial not only for professional success but also for personal growth.”

“Learn from every experience, whether positive or negative, and trust that challenges will strengthen you. Most importantly, keep God at the center of your decisions. He will guide you and provide the strength to overcome obstacles,” he advises.

Bea Mariz Bagac

Meet the Filipina behind a Dubai startup promoting sustainable web solutions with treeplanting

Promoting sustainability through technology is at the core of the GoGreen campaign, an initiative that plants a tree for every website built on GoMommy.ae. This innovative approach is the brainchild of Bea Mariz Bagac, a 29-year-old entrepreneur who has quickly made a name for herself in Dubai’s competitive startup ecosystem. As the co-founder of GoMommy, a DIY website-building platform under Sige Go Portal LLC, Bea is deeply passionate about both technology and environmental advocacy. “I’ve always been passionate about tech

and business,” she shares. Having been abroad for only a year, she’s already making waves with GoMommy’s ecoconscious mission by partnering with the One Billion Tree-Planting Initiative (OBTI).

Bea’s entrepreneurial journey started in the Philippines, where she worked for Lyka, a social media platform. She handled sales and operations, gaining invaluable insights into the tech industry. “The experience allowed me to understand the tech industry better and learn the ins and outs of running a

business,” Bea recalls. This foundation helped her develop the skills needed to launch GoMommy in Dubai, a city she believes is a perfect environment for innovation and entrepreneurship.

The transition to Dubai was driven by Bea’s desire for challenge and growth.

“Dubai offers a dynamic environment for startups and entrepreneurs, with innovation and sustainability at its core,” she explains. She saw the city as the ideal stage to bring her vision for GoMommy to life, a platform that not only supports businesses but also contributes to environmental advocacy.

GoMommy’s GoGreen campaign plants a tree for every website built, a tangible way of promoting sustainability. This unique approach has been recognized globally, with the campaign recently featured on FOX40 News.

Despite her rapid success, Bea faced her share of challenges when she first moved abroad. “Like many overseas workers, I faced initial struggles, including adapting to a new culture, building a network, and navigating the competitive business landscape,” she shares. Overcoming these challenges wasn’t easy, but Bea credits her support system—friends, mentors, and fellow Filipino entrepreneurs—for helping her push through. “I looked up to Filipino entrepreneurs who made a name for themselves abroad, and their stories inspired me to keep pushing forward.”

Her work at GoMommy brings her immense satisfaction. “The most satisfying part is seeing our clients’ businesses grow while knowing that, with each website created, a tree is planted,” she says. For Bea, this dual purpose of promoting business growth while giving back to the environment is what drives her. “I love that my work allows me to merge my passion for technology and the environment.”

Bea’s entrepreneurial journey is far from over. She envisions expanding GoMommy’s reach, both locally and globally. “In the future, I aim to continue growing GoMommy and pushing further into environmental advocacy,” she shares. Her long-term goal is to bring her success back to the Philippines, where she hopes to support more Filipino entrepreneurs in the tech industry. For Bea, the future is all about making a meaningful impact both in business and on the environment.

When asked for advice for other overseas Filipinos, Bea emphasizes the importance of perseverance and focus. “Stay focused on your goals and surround yourself with people who believe in you,” she advises. She also stresses the need for financial wisdom and building a strong support system. “Always remember why you started, and don’t be afraid to reach out
