ERWIN GARCIA BOLANTE

How a Filipino nurse is raising the bar for excellence in Saudi Arabia’s healthcare system

Erwin Garcia Bolante, MAN, RN, CHRMO, CHQO, is redefining nursing leadership in Saudi Arabia. At 38, he serves as the Nursing Excellence Manager at King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital in Jeddah. Originally from Roxas City, Philippines, Erwin’s career is marked by his commitment to education, quality care, and patient safety.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from St. Anthony College of Roxas City, where he was awarded the Clinical Efficiency Award, and later completed his Master of Arts in Nursing at St. Paul University Philippines in 2021. After passing the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties-Nurse exam in 2014, he began his overseas journey as an ER Staff Nurse and quickly rose to higher ranks, including Acting Clinical

Nurse Specialist.

Now a senior leader, Erwin oversees efforts to achieve Magnet Accreditation, an international benchmark for nursing excellence. He also manages staffing strategies and ensures compliance with accreditation standards. “I empower nurses by equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to excel,” he told The Global Filipino Magazine.

His contributions were recently recognized when he was named Outstanding Filipino Nurse Leader in Saudi Arabia during The Global Filipino Icon Awards at Dusit Thani, where broadcast journalist Miss Kara David was guest of honor.

Before moving abroad, Erwin gained experience in the Philippines as a Staff Nurse and later became the youngest Charge Nurse at St. Anthony College Hospital’s Emergency Unit at just 24 years old.

For Erwin, nursing is a calling. “Nursing demands compassion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to patient care,” he shares. He takes pride in mentoring both new and experienced nurses to help them grow professionally and personally.

His work abroad exposed him to international standards and opportunities, including collaborating with Joint Commission International (JCI) surveyors. “Working abroad makes you a stronger individual, allowing you to explore your knowledge and skills on a global scale,” he says.

Despite challenges as the first Filipino in such a senior role at his hospital, Erwin persevered with the help of mentors and a strong work ethic. His goal now is to become a Director of Nursing and give back to his home country. He encourages fellow OFWs to balance work with personal well-being, maintain strong ties with loved ones, and always find purpose in their journey.

JANINE ALYSSA

M. NAVARRO

How a Filipina born in Dubai built a fulfilling career in media and marketing.

In an industry driven by metrics and trends, Janine Alyssa Navarro stands out for her people-first approach to digital marketing. As the Chief Strategy Officer at Glimpse and the founder of Myndful Social, Janine has built a thriving career in the UAE by fusing creativity with empathy—and proving that authenticity still wins.

Born and raised in the Emirates, Janine is part of a new generation of global Filipinos who remain proudly rooted in their heritage. “This is where my career started and has blossomed, and I can’t picture myself being anywhere else,” she told The Global Filipino Magazine. From graphic design at 21 to leading full-service digital teams, her career has been shaped by passion, resilience, and a deep love for storytelling.

She was recently honored with the Outstanding Filipina Leader in MENA Social Media and Digital Marketing Award at The Global Filipino Icon Awards 2025 at Dusit Thani Dubai, where Miss Kara David served as guest of honor—recognizing Janine’s contributions to the region’s digital and creative space.

While her journey is full of milestones, Janine is quick to point out that it hasn’t always been easy. “I had to power through stereotypical assumptions,” she shared, recalling her early years. But instead of dimming her light, she chose to grow louder in kindness and lead with consistency.

Her advice to kababayans abroad? “Let no one else be your competition but yourself. Cease every opportunity you can get—and pay it forward,” she said.

Janine’s story is a reminder that success isn’t just about titles. It’s about showing up, being real, and lifting others along the way.

TKD Oryx Taekwondo

Empowering Filipino youth: How TKD Oryx Taekwondo shapes future champions in Abu Dhabi

In the heart of Abu Dhabi, TKD Oryx Taekwondo is transforming young lives through discipline, resilience, and Filipino pride. Founded by a team of passionate Filipino coaches, the club primarily caters to Filipino children, offering a space where martial arts and cultural identity thrive together.

“What’s unique about our team is, first, all coaches are Filipino; second, we are driven by love and passion for this sport; and thirdly, the coaching team shares the common goal of producing players who will eventually surpass us,” shares Head Coach Mary Ann “Mean” Lopez in an interview with The Global Filipino Magazine.

The club began in 2017 with free outdoor

classes and has since grown into a fullfledged training center open to all ages, starting as young as three years old. Each class is carefully segmented by age and skill level, creating an inclusive environment where every student can thrive.

Beyond self-defense and fitness, TKD Oryx Taekwondo instills values like teamwork, responsibility, and cultural connection. Filipino traditions such as using the language and the gesture of ‘mano’ are embedded in their practices, helping kids reconnect with their roots.

The club’s athletes have earned multiple victories in both local and international competitions, including events in Bangkok and Seoul. Recently, they were honored with

the Champion Maker Award for Excellence in Taekwondo Sport at The Global Filipino Icon Awards 2025 at Dusit Thani Dubai, where journalist Kara David served as guest of honor.

Coach Mean invites parents to let their kids experience a free first class. “The values your children learn here are far greater than any price tag,” she says. “It’s a lifelong investment in their character and future.”

PATRICIA MAE

M. ESTENOSO

How a journalism teacher found her place in Dubai’s corporate world

When Patricia Mae M. Estenoso left her career as a journalism instructor in the Philippines to move to Dubai in 2021, she had no idea she’d end up writing for global tech brands. Now a creative copywriter at CXO Strategies FZ LLC, Patricia manages storytelling and event branding for Dell Technologies, a role she admits came with a steep learning curve.

“I had zero clue about writing for corporate branding and technology,” she told The Global Filipino Magazine. “I made a lot of mistakes—and I still do—but the journey has been incredibly rewarding.”

Her transition hasn’t gone unnoticed. At The Global Filipino Icon Awards 2025 held at Dusit Thani Dubai, Patricia was honored with the Visionary Filipina in Corporate

Communications Award, with broadcast journalist Kara David gracing the event as guest of honor.

Before her UAE chapter, Patricia was a magazine editor, freelance writer, and teacher. But it was in Dubai that she discovered her flair for visual storytelling and branding. “I’m not a designer, but I’ve realized how essential visuals are in marketing. It’s pushed me to grow beyond writing.”

Her move wasn’t easy—health concerns and anxiety marked her early days abroad. But her grandmother’s advice—“Don’t let this be the only thing you see in your lifetime”— stuck with her.

Today, Patricia is part of global creative communities, including the Emirates Literature Foundation and the American Copy Editors Society. She’s also working on personal projects like a writing newsletter and video series to support aspiring creatives.

“To fellow Filipinos, especially those starting over abroad: pray, stay grounded, and find your people,” she says. “The journey is tough—but growth, healing, and purpose always follow.”

In recognition of his impact, Dennis received the Healthcare Hero in Emergency Response Award at The Global Filipino Icon Awards 2025 held at Dusit Thani Dubai, graced by guest of honor Kara David.

MARIA GILL

Filipina horse owner makes history in England’s elite racing scene

At 36, Maria Gill has made history as the first Filipina racehorse owner in England, shattering stereotypes in a sport dominated by white men. A mother of three and business owner based in the UK, Maria’s journey began with humble roots in Puerto Galera, where she once managed a resort and juggled multiple jobs to support her family.

“Life in the Philippines was difficult. I was the breadwinner, but it wasn’t enough,” she told The Global Filipino Magazine. Her move to the UK in 2015 opened unexpected doors—including her childhood fascination with horses becoming reality.

Inspired by watching Mikee Cojuangco’s jump shows, Maria first joined syndicates before establishing her own sole

proprietorship in 2021. Her big break came when her horse, Thunder Moor, won first place at the Bahrain Turf Series, earning $48,000 and a VIP experience hosted by the Bahrain government.

For her groundbreaking work, Maria received the Trailblazer in Organic Beauty and Equine Business Award at The Global Filipino Icon Awards 2025 held at Dusit Thani Dubai, where Kara David was guest of honor.

Maria admits being an Asian woman in UK horse racing isn’t easy. “People are shocked when they learn I’m the owner. Even some Filipinos didn’t believe it,” she shared. But she pushes on—with grit and grace.

While managing businesses, raising children, and attending college, Maria also gives back—funding relatives’ education, helping neighbors start small businesses, and bringing family members to travel the world.

Her advice to fellow Filipinos: “Never give up on your dreams. If you succeed, don’t forget where you came from. Keep the Filipino culture alive—we’re known for our kindness and resilience.”

ICONS OF FILIPINO EXCELLENCE SHINE BRIGHT AT THE GLOBAL FILIPINO ICON AWARDS 2025 IN DUBAI

In a celebration that radiated with pride, purpose, and star power, The Global Filipino Icon Awards 2025 unfolded on April 5 at Dusit Thani Dubai, honoring outstanding Filipinos from around the world under the theme “Elevating Excellence, Embracing a New Era.”

The awards night marked a significant milestone for The Global Filipino Magazine as it welcomed its new publisher, Madam Maryam Delim Aljawi, a veteran businesswoman who has spent over three decades supporting Filipino-led ventures in the UAE. In her opening remarks, Aljawi reflected on the magazine’s journey and renewed commitment: “Tonight marks a fresh chapter for our publication, but our mission remains the same—to spotlight the triumphs of Filipinos across the globe and inspire unity in excellence.”

With over 500 guests in attendance, including dignitaries, celebrities, and community leaders, the fifth edition of the awards became the magazine’s most star-studded yet. Esteemed journalist Kara David graced the event as Guest of Honor

and received the Star Icon of Investigative Journalism and Media Excellence award. In an emotional speech, she praised the strength of OFWs, saying, “Kayo, mga Global Pinoys, ang tunay na kahanga-hanga.”

Other Star Icon Awardees included actress and singer Arci Muñoz, who was honored as Global Influencer in Lifestyle and Entertainment, as well as Shereen Ahmed, Miss Universe Bahrain 2024, who received the Icon of Empowerment for Single Mothers and Mental Health Awareness award. Also present were Chef JP Anglo (Ambassador of Filipino Culinary Excellence), Thirdy Ravena (Champion of Filipino Athletic Excellence), Harvey Cenit (Visionary in Avant-Garde Fashion Excellence), and the iconic Michael Cinco, who was recognized with a plaque of appreciation for his continued global impact on fashion.

The event also featured a special message from Philippine Ambassador to the UAE Alfonso Ferdinand Ver, who extended his best wishes via video, and Consul General Marford Angeles, who delivered a

powerful keynote emphasizing community empowerment and cultural pride.

One of the most anticipated segments of the night was the reveal of the Emerging Global Filipino Icon 2025. From a pool of ten inspiring finalists, Pamela Calinog— educator, advocate, and founder of Ausome Family Journey—was announced as this year’s winner. Her heartfelt speech moved the crowd, as she dedicated the award to every family raising neurodivergent children with courage and love.

KARA DAVID

You are the real icons’: Kara David inspires global Pinoys with heartfelt message

Award-winning journalist and documentarist Kara David delivered a heartfelt and powerful speech during The Global Filipino Icon Awards 2025 held on April 5 at Dusit Thani Dubai. Honored with the Star Icon of Investigative Journalism and Media Excellence, David’s words echoed across the ballroom, stirring emotions and reminding the audience of the strength and heart of the global Filipino.

“Maraming salamat sa Global Filipino Magazine para sa parangal na ito,” David began, expressing gratitude for the recognition. “I feel so humbled to receive such an award, lalo pa’t sa aking pagkakaalam… ang salitang ‘ICON’ ay karaniwang binibigay sa mga taong may mataas na naabot sa buhay o may nagawang kahanga-hanga.”

Her speech resonated deeply with the audience, many of whom were Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), entrepreneurs, creatives, and changemakers who had overcome tremendous odds to achieve success abroad. “Pero sa totoo lang, looking at all of you today… kayo, mga global Pinoys ang tunay na kahanga-hanga,” she added.

David recounted her experience as host of OFW Diaries, a program she launched in 2009 that exposed her to the daily struggles of Filipinos abroad. “Alam ko yung hirap na pinagdadaanan ng mga Pilipino sa abroad makapagbigay lang ng tulong sa kanilang pamilya,” she recalled.

“But look at you now—mga professionals, entrepreneurs, achievers in your respective industries. Thank you for not giving up. Thank you for persevering. Thank you for lending your talent to the world,” she said, drawing a wave of applause. “At dahil dyan, kayo ang tunay na ICONS ng global Filipinos.”

In line with the event’s theme, Elevating Excellence, Embracing a New Era, David emphasized the value of struggle and success, echoing the earlier remarks of Philippine Ambassador Alfonso Ver: “Sabi nga ni Ambassador Ver, struggle and success— hindi ba mas matamis ang tagumpay kapag alam mong pinaghirapan mo ito?”

Beyond achievements, David honored the spirit of compassion and selflessness that defines the Filipino diaspora. “Our OFWs,

global Filipinos, are some of the most selfless people I know,” she said. “Laging handang tumulong sa kababayan, laging handang magmalasakit para sa iba.”

She reflected on moments of personal doubt, sharing how purpose always gave her strength. “Yung gusto mo nang magresign kasi mahirap na… Pero lagi lang akong bumabalik sa tanong: bakit ko ba ito ginagawa? Ano ba ang purpose ng Panginoon kung bakit ibinigay sa akin ang talento at pagkakataong ito?”

David ended her speech with a powerful call to unity and remembrance: “Dahil sana saan man tayo makarating sa buhay, saan mang panig ng mundo… huwag nating kalimutan ang ating mga kababayan. Ako, kayo, tayong lahat Filipino—kahit saan, kahit kailan.

ELOISA CARPIO OXIMINA

From street vendor and saleslady to CEO of two companies in the UAE

Now based in Dubai, she is the Founder and CEO of Shelberg Technical Services LLC and IMC Employment Agency & Business Management Consultancy LLC, leading businesses in construction, facilities management, recruitment, and business solutions.

Eloisa arrived in Dubai in 2006, starting as an office staff handling admin, cashiering, and storekeeping. “Working with colleagues from different nationalities helped me develop strong interpersonal skills,” she shared with The Global Filipino Magazine. Her resilience and drive led to a promotion as Store & Admin Manager and later

into leadership roles across marketing, recruitment, and corporate management.

In recognition of her journey, she received the Visionary Leader in Multi-Industry Business Expansion Award at The Global Filipino Icon Awards 2025 held at Dusit Thani Dubai, where Miss Kara David was the guest of honor.
