Jyerex Go Abrasado

CEO of Filipinoowned accounting firm in Qatar pioneers financial excellence and community service

8 VOLUME 4 | ISSUE 12 | APRIL 2024 TGFM THE GLOBAL FILIPINO MAGAZINE

At 43 years old, Jyerex Go Abrasado, CPA, has built a formidable career that spans continents, industries, and roles. Currently the CEO of Business Partners Consulting LLC, the first Filipino-owned accounting firm in Qatar, Jyerex’s journey reflects his dedication, thoughtful career choices, and an unwavering commitment to community service.

“My mantra in life is to be a history-maker and legacy-builder,” he shares with The Global Filipino Magazine, encapsulating his drive to create lasting impacts both professionally and personally.

After passing the CPA board exam in May 2023, Jyerex’s career took off with a job offer from Bin Harmal Group in Al Ain, UAE, as a Group Accountant. His role encompassed managing the finances of 33 companies across various industries, including construction, car dealership, and tourism. In December 2023, he was assigned to Qatar to set up the accounting department for a construction joint venture, a task that was supposed to last only two months but extended until June 2006 due to his exceptional performance.

Abrassado then moved to KPMG-Qatar as a Senior Audit Executive, where he became the firm’s first hired External Auditor. His tenure at KPMG lasted until June 2008, after which he joined Qatar Shell. Over 11 years at Shell, he held various positions, including Project Accounting Analyst and Financial Accountant, playing a crucial role in the construction and asset management of a US$19 billion Gas-To-Liquid (GTL) plant.

“Being part of the pioneering team at Shell was a highlight of my career,” he

reflects.

Entrepreneurial ventures and leadership roles

The COVID-19 pandemic, while disruptive, became a catalyst for Jyerex’s entrepreneurial spirit. In June 2021, he founded Business Partners Consulting LLC in Qatar Financial Centre, marking a significant milestone as the first Filipino accounting firm in the country. The firm offers comprehensive services in accounting, tax, business consulting, IT, and HR. Additionally, he serves as the CFO of NSA Tech LLC, an artificial intelligence startup.

Beyond his corporate achievements, Jyerex has significantly contributed to the Filipino community in Qatar and beyond. He is a founding member of several organizations, including the Philippine Business Council and the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) in Qatar. He also plays pivotal roles in numerous social and professional groups, such as the Overseas Filipino Investment and Entrepreneur Movement (OFIEM) and the Toastmasters Club of PICPA.

One of his notable contributions is as the Chairman of the NGO Wisdom Seed Schooling Program, which provides scholarships to underprivileged children in Mindanao. Although currently on hold, this initiative underscores his commitment to education and community development.

“Education and community support are close to my heart. Through these programs, we can make a real difference in people’s lives,” he says.

Passion for his work

Abrassado’s passion for his work is evident.

“The most satisfying aspect of my job is building credibility and integrity in the market as the first Filipino accounting firm in Qatar. It’s a proud moment to raise the Philippine flag in the business sector here,” he shares.

His dedication to his field is matched by his enjoyment of Qatar’s tax-free environment and recognition as one of the safest countries globally.

Like many expatriates, Jyerex has faced challenges, particularly the longing for home and the absence of family celebrations. However, he has found solace in the diverse community in Qatar, where he met his wife and forged deep connections.

“I miss the food and celebrations with friends back home, but I’ve built a family here,” he notes.

Looking ahead, Jyerex plans to return to the Philippines to develop his 10-hectare farm, combining his passion for agriculture with community education through the Jyerex Learning Site.

“My future plans involve imparting knowledge gained overseas through teaching and continuing socio-civic works,” he envisions.

Advice for fellow Filipinos abroad

Abrassado’s advice for fellow Filipinos struggling abroad is rooted in his own experiences.

“Find love in the country you’re in, save for your retirement through property investments, and continuously upgrade your skills. Most importantly, make your own house your permanent address,” he advises.

He also emphasizes the importance of attending financial literacy lectures and professional development workshops to advance one’s career.

Traveling has given Jyerex a broader perspective on life, shaping his outlook as a global citizen.

“Visiting Europe and the US has inspired me to maintain a quality outlook in life and be a good resident or member of any community I belong to,” he concludes.

Maria Gill

Breaking barriers: Meet the first Filipina race horse owner in England

12 VOLUME 4 | ISSUE 12 | APRIL 2024 TGFM THE GLOBAL FILIPINO MAGAZINE

Maria Gill, a 36-year-old business owner based in the United Kingdom, exemplifies the spirit of resilience and ambition. A mother of three, Maria’s journey from managing a resort in Puerto Galera to becoming a notable figure in the UK horse racing scene is a story of determination and triumph.

“Karma is real. It comes in different forms, so what goes around comes around. Always choose kindness, and you’ll be blessed,” she shares as her life mantra, reflecting her philosophy of kindness and hard work.

Maria’s initial steps in the UK were humble. She took on various roles, including working in a nursing home, cleaning houses, and managing rental properties in Pampanga. Despite the challenges, Maria never lost sight of her dreams.

“Life in the Philippines was difficult. I was the breadwinner, so I decided to work abroad. Even with two jobs in the Philippines, earning 50,000 pesos a month wasn’t enough to cover all the bills and school fees,” Maria shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.

Her passion for horses, sparked by childhood memories of watching Mikee Cojuangco on jump shows, found a new avenue when she moved to the UK in 2015.

“When I first came to the UK, I was surprised by how popular horse racing was here. It’s one of the most popular sports, and even the Royal Family is active in it,” Maria explains.

Attending major horse racing events

like Royal Ascot and Qatar Glorious Goodwood, Maria initially enjoyed the social aspect.

“I prayed to God that I could have my own horses racing here. I started by buying small shares in horses from different syndicates until 2021, when I set up my own as a sole proprietor,” she adds.

Her breakthrough came with Thunder Moor, a horse that not only competed but also won in the prestigious Bahrain Turf Series.

“One of my horses, Thunder Moor, was invited to the Bahrain Turf Series. The Bahrain government covered the expenses and treated me like a VIP. My horse won first place, earning $48,000,” Maria shares proudly.

Her experiences in Bahrain were marked by the hospitality and kindness of the locals, including dining with His Highness Sheikh Salman Bin Rashed Al Khalifa.

Maria’s journey in the horse racing industry is not without its challenges, particularly as an Asian woman in a predominantly white, male-dominated field.

“It’s a struggle being an Asian. People are often shocked when they find out I’m the owner of the horse. In Bahrain, even fellow Filipinos couldn’t believe I was the only Asian owner there competing,” Maria says.

Despite the occasional discrimination, she remains undeterred.

“There was a time when someone assumed I was milking the government for being in the UK. It was a sad experience, but it taught me to stand up for myself,” she reflects.

Balancing her professional life with family responsibilities, Maria has made significant strides.

“I manage my businesses, care for my three children, and even attend college twice a week. I enjoy what I do because I love horses, and the corporate side of buying and selling shares helps boost my confidence,” she explains.

Her husband and children share her passion for horses, often accompanying her to races.

Looking ahead, Maria has plans to retire in Asia with her husband once their youngest child turns 18. She also aspires to help more people, especially children in her hometown, pursue their studies.

“I am helping a lot of relatives in the

Philippines to finish their education. In the future, I want to help more people, especially children in my neighborhood, to pursue their studies,” she says.

Maria’s philanthropic efforts extend beyond her immediate family, as she has also funded small businesses and provided capital for sari-sari stores and pig farms.

“My advice to fellow Filipinos abroad is never to give up on your dreams. If you succeed, don’t forget where you came from. Keep the Filipino culture alive. We are known for being kind, humble, hardworking, and loving towards others,” she advises.

Her journey from the Philippines to the UK, overcoming numerous obstacles, and achieving remarkable success in the horse racing industry is a testament to her unwavering spirit and determination.

“Because of the horses, I have been able to help many people, treating four families to holidays in Turkey and friends to trips to Thailand and Macau. I have also brought my parents and siblings to the UK and other countries like Japan, Hong Kong, and Bali, letting them experience an extravagant lifestyle,” Maria concludes.

Ricardo L. Advincula Jr.

OFW leader spearheads sports and cultural initiatives for Filipinos in Bahrain

16 VOLUME 4 | ISSUE 12 | APRIL 2024 TGFM THE GLOBAL FILIPINO MAGAZINE

Ricardo L. Advincula Jr., widely known as Ric, embodies the resilience, dedication, and leadership that mark the journeys of many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). At 42 years old, he has spent nearly half of his life abroad, carving out a significant presence in the corporate and community spheres in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Ric embarked on his overseas career shortly after graduating in 2002 from Saint Louis University, Baguio City, with a degree in Political Science. He moved to Bahrain in 2006, encouraged by an invitation from his brother to explore professional opportunities. His initial position was as an Administrator at Allied Middle East W.L.L., a UK-based scaffolding company. This role marked the beginning of what would be a rich and varied career path leading him to the aviation sector and eventually to financial institutions.

Today, Ric serves as the Executive Assistant to the Chief Financial Officer at Gulf Insurance Group – Gulf (GIG Gulf). His responsibilities extend well beyond traditional secretarial duties.

“My job as Executive Assistant is not limited to assisting the CFO but also

involves looking after the Board Members of the Company during their regular quarterly board meetings and special visits,” Ric explains with The Global Filipino Magazine.

He also supports the Office of the CEO, particularly when the CEO is in Bahrain, given that the CEO’s primary assistant is based in the UAE office.

Motivations for working abroad

Like many OFWs, Ric’s decision to work abroad was driven by economic considerations and the desire to provide a better life for his family, particularly his mother.

“Since I graduated from college, I have been supporting my mother. I am fortunate that I was able to bring her with me here in Bahrain,” he shares. This move not only provided financial stability but also allowed him to offer his mother a more comfortable life.

Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Ric has been deeply involved in community service, particularly through sports and cultural organizations. Recognizing the lack of activities for the Filipino community in his early years in Bahrain, Ric founded the Pinoy Badminton Group (PBG). Ric founded the Pinoy Badminton Group Bahrain in 2007, aiming to establish a network for Filipino badminton enthusiasts and promote the sport within the community.

“I made an extra effort to network and promote the sport among members of the Filipino community, which led to the establishment of PBG,” he states.

The group not only provided a recreational outlet but also became a vehicle for fundraising to support distressed OFWs.

His community leadership continued to grow, and in 2013, Ric was elected as a member of the Board of the Filipino Club Bahrain, later serving as its President. He has been a steadfast Member of the Executive Committee of the Filipino Club Bahrain from 2013 to the present. Additionally, he holds the position of incumbent Vice President of the FilipinoAmerican Association of Bahrain. Under his leadership, FCB launched several initiatives that significantly benefited the Filipino community, including financial literacy training and entrepreneurial seminars.

Ricardo’s dedication has been recognized with several nominations and awards. He was nominated for the 2021 Bagong Bayani Awards and the 2020 Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas (PAFIOO), an

initiative led by the Commission on Filipinos Overseas. He was also honored as one of the 10 Most Outstanding Overseas Filipino Workers in the GCC in 2016, receiving the Awards of Excellence in the Sports Category.

The fulfillment of current roles

Discussing what he enjoys about his current role, Ric emphasizes the opportunity to learn and share best practices within a structured corporate environment.

“The opportunity to interact with several high-profile officials from the Bahrain Government and the business sector has provided key takeaways, which I always share and apply to my leadership in the Filipino Club Bahrain,” he notes.

His connections have enabled him to organize events and programs aimed at uplifting Filipinos in Bahrain, demonstrating his commitment to both his professional and community roles. Ricardo has established strong connections with some members of the Royal Family and officials of the government of the Kingdom of Bahrain, as well as with prominent members of the business sectors. These relationships have been instrumental in advancing his community initiatives and securing support for the Filipino community in Bahrain.

Ric candidly shares the emotional and practical challenges of living abroad, from initial homesickness to the ongoing responsibility of caring for family members from afar. He found solace and purpose in his work with the PBG and FCB, which helped him manage the isolation typically experienced by many expatriates. His mother remains his greatest inspiration and motivation to persevere.

Looking ahead

As for the future, Ric plans to return to the Philippines eventually, aiming to use his experience and knowledge to help other returning OFWs reintegrate smoothly.

“I want to consider possible activities and programs that will facilitate the reintegration of returning OFWs, in collaboration with the Department of Migrant Workers or OWWA,” he explains.

To his fellow Filipinos abroad, Ric offers advice rooted in his own experiences: “Working abroad is challenging, but always remind yourself of the bigger goal and greater purpose. Remain committed and faithful, which has been the strongest foundation for me since I decided to work abroad.”

Airene Joy Diego

How one former waitress became a cluster HR manager at a major hotel chain in UAE

20 VOLUME 4 | ISSUE 12 | APRIL 2024 TGFM THE GLOBAL FILIPINO MAGAZINE

At the age of 34, Airene Joy Diego holds the prestigious position of Cluster HR Manager at BM Hotels & Resorts, a role she has earned through relentless hard work and an unwavering dedication to her family and career. Airene Joy, who has been living abroad for the past 12 years, shares her journey with The Global Filipino Magazine from a struggling breadwinner in the Philippines to a respected HR professional in the UAE.

“Family has always been my priority,” Airene Joy begins, reflecting on the early days following her father’s death and her mother’s absence which thrust her into the role of provider for her three siblings.

Facing the financial challenges common in the Philippines, Airene Joy worked multiple jobs, from a front desk agent by day to a bartender by night, all to ensure her siblings could attend school.

“The dual roles were tough, but thinking of my siblings’ needs fueled my perseverance.”

Airene Joy’s move to the UAE marked a pivotal turn in her life. Starting as a waitress, she did not let her initial position define her capabilities. With hard work and cross-departmental

training, she caught the attention of the HR Director who offered her a position as an HR assistant. This opportunity was the beginning of a transformative career path.

“My brother told me it was time to pursue my own dreams,” Airene Joy recalls.

Following this advice, she enrolled in a distance learning program in Business Administration at the Lyceum of the Philippines. She later advanced her education with a Master of Business Administration (MBA), equipping her with critical skills that facilitated her rise in the HR field.

From HR assistant, Airene Joy advanced through roles with increasing responsibility, culminating in her current position as Cluster HR Manager. Her journey reflects not only personal growth but also academic and professional achievement. In 2019, she celebrated her graduation in Business Administration, a moment of pride and accomplishment.

In her role, Airene Joy has implemented several initiatives aimed at enhancing the employee experience at BM Hotels & Resorts. These include recognition programs, cross-training opportunities, wellness initiatives, and diversity and inclusion efforts, all designed to foster a supportive and productive workplace environment.

Reflecting on her achievements, Airene Joy was recently recognized as one of the top 50 HR professionals in the HRME Awards 2024.

“It’s a humbling and rewarding experience,” she states.

“This recognition validates the passion and effort I have invested in my career. It’s an honor to stand among such respected professionals.”

Airene Joy believes her diverse background and resilience set her apart as a standout HR leader.

“My journey from a front desk agent to an HR manager has instilled in me a deep understanding of organizational challenges and employee needs, which I address with empathy and strategic vision.”

When asked about the biggest challenges facing HR today, Airene Joy mentions the need to adapt to technological advancements, the shift towards remote work, and the ongoing requirements of legal and regulatory compliance. Her approach involves proactive strategies, continuous upskilling, and fostering a positive work environment.

Collaboration with other departments is crucial in achieving HR objectives, according to Airene Joy.

“Regular communication with department heads and aligning our goals with the company’s mission are essential. We work together to tailor strategies that meet departmental needs, contributing to our collective success.”

As for emerging trends in HR, Airene Joy is particularly excited about the potential of remote work, AI, and diversity and inclusion initiatives.

“These trends are reshaping our industry and presenting opportunities to enhance our practices and workplace culture,” she explains.

To aspiring HR professionals, Airene Joy offers this advice: “Embrace continuous learning, gain practical experience, and develop your interpersonal skills. Be adaptable, ethical, and passionate about your role in shaping your organization’s culture and supporting employee wellbeing.

Edwin Cabanero Duria has carved a remarkable niche for himself in the bustling business landscape of Dubai. Currently serving as the Managing Director of Play Middle East Business Consultancy FZE, Chairman of the Philippine Business Council – Dubai & Northern Emirates, and Director Consultant at BNI New Dubai, Edwin exemplifies leadership and community spirit. His journey from the Philippines to the UAE, marked by significant professional milestones, highlights his resilience and dedication.

Edwin’s professional journey began in the Philippines, where he worked with Earth and Style Group, owned by the Ng Family, who also own Rebisco and Asia United Bank. As the youngest manager of their property developer company, he was the Head of International Sales from 2004 to 2009.

“I was consistently promoted every six months because of my overall performance,” Edwin shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.

In 2009, Edwin moved to Dubai, initially planning to return to the Philippines after his wife gave birth. However, his wife requested they stay in Dubai to start their family in a safer environment with unlimited opportunities. This decision marked the beginning of Edwin’s international career.

Edwin’s first job in Dubai was as a Group Manager of a Facility Management Company, overseeing cleaning, moving, maintenance, and technical works. He then moved to a Business Set-Up Company, where he spent five years as the Head of Business Development. In 2015, after his boss left the UAE, Edwin decided to establish his own company.

“I set up my business over a cup of coffee with my BNI business colleague and with the help of one of my referral partners who provided me work and funds to start,” he explains.

Today, Edwin manages almost 300 clients, including major companies like Samsung, Pearson Education, and JCB Bamford Excavators. His consultancy helps individuals and businesses navigate the complexities of the UAE’s business environment, offering guidance on proper activities and suitable jurisdictions.

Edwin’s outstanding contributions were recognized when he was awarded BNI UAE New Dubai Director Consultant of the year for two consecutive years. Additionally, he received the BNI Global Hall of Fame Award at the BNI Global Convention 2023 held in Madrid, Spain.

Community involvement

Beyond his professional achievements, Edwin is deeply involved in various community initiatives. As Chairman of

www.theglobalfilipinomagazine.com 23 THE GLOBAL FILIPINO MAGAZINE

the Philippine Business Council Dubai & Northern Emirates since 2015, he has played a pivotal role in mentoring and creating opportunities for Filipino entrepreneurs and professionals. He also serves as a Director Consultant for BNI UAE, where he focuses on business mentoring and fostering collaborations.

Edwin is also a member and sponsor of UAE Mountain Biking, a member of the DXB Heroes Elite Eagles Club, and a leader/member of Couples For Christ. He served as a Eucharistic Minister of Holy Communion at St. Mary’s Church Dubai from 2019 to 2024 and continues to mentor businesses through Jupiter Business Mentor.

Like many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), Edwin faced numerous challenges.

“We experienced looking for someone to lend us money on New Year’s Night because our cheque was due on January 1st,” he shares.

A friend from Sharjah, a member of their community, came to their aid, underscoring the importance of a supportive network.

Transitioning from an employee to an entrepreneur was another significant challenge.

“We lost the end-of-service benefits and were scared of what the future held. But

because of the business community I have, I overcame that struggle through their proper guidance over a cup of coffee,” Edwin reflects.

Enjoying and embracing the present

Edwin finds immense satisfaction in helping others succeed.

“Helping individuals and companies with proper information and identifying the right jurisdictions for them to operate is very fulfilling,” he says.

His passion for mentoring and creating connections is evident in his roles at the Philippine Business Council and BNI.

Looking ahead, Edwin plans to retire early but intends to stay in Dubai and travel extensively with his family.

“I will probably go back to the Philippines once in a while to see family members,” he says.

For fellow Filipinos struggling abroad, Edwin’s advice is clear: “Join any community where you think you belong. Through these communities, you multiply your chances of growing and achieving your dreams. It’s okay to treat yourself because you work hard, but make sure you manage your finances properly.”

Edwin also emphasizes the role of the Philippine Business Council in supporting Filipino entrepreneurs.

“PBC Dubai is a nearly 30-year-old group where Filipino entrepreneurs excel through networking, collaboration, education, and training,” he notes.

He invites Filipino entrepreneurs and professionals to join this thriving community to grow, learn, and mentor others. Those who wish to join can email him at membership@pbc-dne.com.

Ruby Berja-San Antonio

Entrepreneur overcomes personal challenges to lead tech startup in UAE

30 VOLUME 4 | ISSUE 12 | APRIL 2024 TGFM THE GLOBAL FILIPINO MAGAZINE

Ruby Berja-San Antonio’s journey from a fitness and health professor in the Philippines to the Founder and CEO of Entreppid FZC in Dubai is a story of resilience, adaptability, and pioneering spirit. Celebrating two decades of a dynamic overseas career, Ruby reflects on her diverse professional experiences, the driving forces behind her decisions, and her vision for the future.

Ruby’s career abroad began in Qatar, where she initially took on roles in sales and graphic design, eventually transitioning into a fitness trainer position in Oman. This multifaceted career path led her to Dubai, where she served as a private fitness trainer and health coach for an Emirati family, later exploring real estate and sales across the UAE.

“My passion for sales, particularly in the food and hospitality industry, ignited during these years,” Ruby explains with The Global Filipino Magazine.

Her diverse experiences culminated in her current role as the CEO at Entreppid FZC, a Dubai-based software company she

has nurtured from its inception.

The drive to move abroad

The decision to work abroad was propelled by Ruby’s role as a single parent and her desire to provide a better future for her daughter, Elyze, and support her widowed twin sister and her parents.

“Despite having a fulfilling career in the Philippines, I knew I needed more to provide the quality of life my daughter deserved,” Ruby states.

This led her to pursue opportunities that offered both personal and professional growth, enriching her life significantly.

Ruby’s background is as dynamic as her career path. A licensed fitness and health professor, her passion for teaching and mentoring shines through in her dedication to health and wellness, which she actively promotes through her online presence.

“Teaching is my calling, and nothing brings me more joy than mentoring and inspiring others,” she shares.

Her daily routine is a testament to her disciplined and organized nature. Starting her day at 5:30 AM, Ruby hits the gym before diving into her busy schedule, a regimen that keeps her grounded and focused.

Entrepreneurial drive and current enjoyments

“What led me to become an entrepreneur?” Ruby muses.

“My extensive experience spearheading various companies abroad, where I played a pivotal role in each venture’s growth, sparked my desire to forge my own path.”

Her entrepreneurial journey is driven by a commitment to excellence and a desire to create impactful, meaningful change within the food and hospitality industry.

Ruby appreciates her current role for the opportunity to innovate and lead.

“Starting my own brand allowed me to harness my capabilities and transform them into a successful narrative of my own,” she adds, highlighting the satisfaction derived from building something from the ground up.

For Ruby, the benefits of working overseas are manifold. She values the cultural immersion, the professional growth opportunities, and the financial stability it provides, which has enabled her to support her family back home while securing a comfortable life for herself and

her daughter.

The journey has not been without its challenges. Ruby recounts a particularly difficult period when a slipped disc left her unable to walk for months.

“It was a time of immense personal and professional strain, but the support of friends and family and my unyielding determination saw me through,” she recalls.

This experience underscored the importance of prioritizing health and inspired her pursuit of entrepreneurship.

Vision for the future

Looking ahead, Ruby is determined to make her mark in the convergence of health, fitness, and technology.

“I aim to transform businesses by introducing health-conscious, technologically advanced solutions,” she states.

Elykarl “Karl”

Kapampangan pride: OFW’s transition from AED1,800 salary to president and COO of Ichiryu Ramen House

34 VOLUME 4 | ISSUE 12 | APRIL 2024 TGFM THE GLOBAL FILIPINO MAGAZINE

Elykarl “Karl” David De Guzman, a 46-year-old proud Kapampangan, currently serves as the President and Chief Operating Officer of Ichiryu Ramen House EST. With 17 years of experience abroad, Karl’s journey from a sales employee to a leading figure in the culinary industry is nothing short of inspiring. He manages the day-to-day operations of Ichiryu Ramen House in Jumeirah 1 and the newly opened Tako Ichiban House at Flayva Al Ghurair Centre, ensuring that everything runs smoothly.

“Managing the day-to-day operations of the restaurants to ensure smooth functioning is my primary responsibility,” Karl shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.

Karl’s venture into working overseas was initially unforeseen. Raised by a patriotic father who emphasized the importance of working in their homeland, Karl never imagined he would leave the Philippines. However, when the opportunity arose, he took a leap of faith to explore his limits.

“I never imagined I would work overseas. My father raised me to be extremely patriotic, emphasizing the importance of working in our homeland. Yet, when the chance arose, I took the leap to explore my limits, and I have never looked back on my choice,” he explains.

Karl’s early life was marked by hard work and resilience. From grade school,

he sold newspapers and cleaned jeepneys part-time to earn money for food. After finishing school, he ventured into sales, excelling in the field. His journey abroad began with a modest monthly salary of AED1,800. Despite his success, Karl never forgot his roots and remained involved in various non-profit organizations in the Philippines, assisting marginalized communities.

“In the Philippines, I also engaged in various non-profit organizations, assisting the marginalized, impoverished, and oppressed. I even contemplated entering politics to extend my service,” he reflects.

Karl’s passion for the operational aspects of the business led him to the events and advertising industry, where he spent 15 years. His transition to the culinary field came with the establishment of Ichiryu Ramen House and Tako Ichiban House.

“When we established Ichiryu Ramen House and Tako Ichiban House, my initial vision was to oversee operations. What brings me the most joy is tackling challenging problems and fostering connections with both customers and staff,” Karl shares.

His dedication and passion are evident in the innovative dining experiences his restaurants offer, such as the first Japanese solo dining experience at Ichiryu Ramen House and the first nomimono set (takoyaki and drink-inone) in the UAE at Tako Ichiban House.

Working in the UAE has been immensely beneficial for Karl’s personal growth and his family’s well-being. The safety and security of the country have allowed him to provide a comfortable life for his family, a stark contrast to his own challenging

childhood.

“Working in the UAE has been incredibly beneficial for my personal growth and learning journey. The safety and security here have allowed me to provide my family with a level of comfort that I couldn’t offer back home,” he says.

Karl’s journey was not without struggles. Starting from the bottom, he faced the harsh realities of manual labor, handing out flyers under the scorching summer sun. Supported by his then-girlfriend, now his wife, and his uncle, Karl persevered through these tough times.

“At times, I pondered why I was doing this instead of relaxing in the comfort of my previous job. Supported by my thengirlfriend, now my wife, and my uncle who had ample experience in the UAE, they motivated me to push through the tough beginning stages to reach my goals,” he recalls.

Looking ahead, Karl plans to expand Ichiryu Ramen House and Tako Ichiban House, reaching a broader audience and inspiring fellow Filipinos to pursue their dreams.

“As a part of the Ichiryu Ramen House and Tako Ichiban House teams, we are eager to expand our business to connect with a larger audience and motivate Filipinos to chase their aspirations,” he shares.

His mantra, “Success comes with the right attitude,” reflects his belief in hard work and perseverance.

For fellow kabayans struggling abroad, Karl offers sage advice. “Remember, persistence is crucial; continue to forge ahead, and success will come your way,” he advises.

Marc Misael Gamil

Choral maestro transforms UAE’s music scene with passion and dedication

38 VOLUME 4 | ISSUE 12 | APRIL 2024 TGFM THE GLOBAL FILIPINO MAGAZINE

Marc Misael Gamil, a 34-yearold music teacher at Al Rayaheen Charter School in the UAE, has orchestrated a life of music, teaching, and service since he moved abroad in August 2016. With a career spanning nearly eight years overseas, Marc’s journey from the Philippines to the UAE is a story of dedication, passion, and continuous growth.

Marc’s multifaceted career encompasses roles as a liturgical music composer, choral music arranger, pianist, choirmaster, streamer, and gamer. He began his overseas career as a music instructor and has since taught in numerous prestigious schools, including Repton School, Nord Anglia International School, and Gems Winchester School.

“I have been teaching in different schools as a piano and music theory specialist and a formal classroom teacher from elementary to middle school,” he shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.

His career highlights include being a pioneer member of the Dubai Opera Festival Chorus, performing at notable events like the BBC Proms at Dubai Opera and Andrea Bocelli’s sold-out concert at Yas Island. Marc also founded the allmale Filipino choir, Chorus Omnis, which performed at the House of Piano alongside well-known classical artists.

“I conducted the Filsoc Chorale during the ‘Paskong Pinoy sa World Expo’ in December 2021,” he recalls proudly.

Passion for teaching and music

Marc’s love for music and teaching is evident in his dedication to his students.

“As a musician and a music teacher, I have never been happier to see my students enjoy and prosper in life because they learned music,” he says.

He believes in the profound impact of music, describing it as a language that only the heart understands.

Marc’s commitment extends beyond the classroom. He founded the social media platform, Music Teachers of the Philippines, to connect educators, share expertise, and offer professional development. His role as a choirmaster at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and his performances during significant events, like Pope Francis’s visit to the UAE, underscore his deep connection to his community and faith.

Like many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), Marc faced numerous challenges when he first arrived in the UAE. He started alone as a bedspacer, working hard to support himself and his family back home.

“My parents are sickly, and as the years go by, I know that my time with them is becoming limited. I miss my parents so much,” he shares, reflecting on the sacrifices he has made.

Despite these struggles, Marc persevered, gradually bringing his loved ones to the UAE. He also overcame personal challenges, including a nearly broken relationship, finding solace and guidance through his faith. Today, he lives with his wife and daughter in Al Ain, having built a stable and fulfilling life abroad.

Looking ahead, Marc and his wife are still considering their long-term plans,

whether to stay in the UAE, migrate to another country, or return to the Philippines. He is focused on saving and investing for the future, with aspirations to continue his impact on music education.

“My social media presence will stay, and I am planning to make more impact through music education, which I will be launching soon online,” he reveals.

Marc offers sage advice for fellow Kabayans struggling abroad.

“We all start low. Sometimes we feel embarrassed about our current state, especially since many people expect us to be the breadwinner. We just need to work on our path and plan things to achieve in the years to come,” he advises.

He emphasizes the importance of saving, finding positive relationships, and serving the community.

“Join a group, especially a choir, if you want to improve your mental health and build good relationships. Serve the Lord in the church if you are religious,” he suggests.

A community leader

In addition to his professional achievements, Marc is a respected community leader in the UAE. He has learned to embrace change and celebrate the successes of those around him.

“Over the years, I have learned to let go of people when they need to part ways with me and to be welcoming to a new set of people who are willing to work with me,” he reflects.

His philosophy of celebrating others’ triumphs and maintaining a positive outlook has been instrumental in his success.

Rhea Mae Nico

Filipino entrepreneur transforms from healthcare professional to business magnate

40 VOLUME 4 | ISSUE 12 | APRIL 2024 TGFM THE GLOBAL FILIPINO MAGAZINE

Exemplifying resilience and innovation, Rhea Mae Nico has built an extensive career over 17 years in the UAE, alongside a successful business in the Philippines. Her evolution from a healthcare professional to a business magnate is truly inspiring.

“My journey began in 2006 when I followed my family to the UAE,” Rhea Mae recounts.

“My father had worked in the Middle East for nearly three decades, and his experiences influenced my decision to explore opportunities here.”

Rhea Mae first dipped her toes into the professional world at Al Ain Hospital as a Health Information Management officer. It was a pioneering step, coinciding with the modernization phase of the medical coding and billing system in the UAE. Her initial stint opened up a gateway to growth in the healthcare sector, prompting her to pursue a certification in Medical Coding from the USA—an effort that took 18 months of rigorous study but eventually paid off.

Today, Rhea Mae holds a dual role as a US Certified Medical Coder at Via Medica International Healthcare and the CEO of her own company, Radiance Skincare Emporium Inc. Her work at Via Medica involves intricate coding which is pivotal in the healthcare system, while her business venture focuses on promoting wellness and entrepreneurship.

“I’m passionate about empowering OFWs and others through entrepreneurship,” Rhea Mae tells The Global Filipino

Magazine. Her company offers health and wellness products, including Glow Smoothies and Coffeeholics, and supports over 200 resellers and distributors worldwide.

Radiance Skincare Emporium isn’t just a business; it’s a platform for change. Through initiatives like the “OFW Heroes” program, the company awards business packages to deserving individuals, promoting self-reliance among OFWs. This dedication to empowering others led to Rhea Mae being honored as a “Remarkable Woman of Dedication & Inspiring Business Leader” by the prestigious Maharlikang Filipino Award in June 2023.

Reflecting on her time in the UAE, Rhea Mae appreciates the diverse learning environment and the high standard of living.

“The UAE’s infrastructure significantly cuts down commuting times, and the tax-free regime coupled with excellent healthcare makes it an ideal place for professionals to thrive,” she explains.

However, the path wasn’t always smooth. In 2016, Rhea Mae faced numerous challenges, including job loss, financial burdens, and personal betrayals.

“Those times taught me the importance of

resilience and the value of having a few, trustworthy people by your side,” she recalls.

Looking ahead, Rhea Mae has no plans to slow down. Her focus is set on expanding her healthcare and wellness business, developing new products, and helping more people achieve their financial and health goals.

“Running my business full-time and expanding our reach is what I am passionately working towards,” she asserts.

For OFWs struggling abroad, Rhea Mae offers sage advice: live below your means and avoid unnecessary debt.

“Focus on building a solid financial foundation and invest in your professional growth,” she advises. Rhea Mae emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and mastery in one’s field, which can lead to better job opportunities and security.

“Remember, survival abroad can bring out both the best and worst in people. Be kind, be cautious, and never take advantage of others. We only have one life, so give it your all,” Rhea Mae concludes, embodying her life mantra that emphasizes perseverance regardless of time, as the time will pass anyway.
