None like the pistachio. This nut is something special, not only because of its origin somewhere in the Middle East, but also because of its political significance.

Why “political”? Because for various reasons it represents the difference between the systems in the USA and Iran.

Keine ist so wie die Pistazie. Diese Nuß ist etwas Besonderes, nicht nur wegen ihrer Herkunft irgendwo im Mittleren Osten, sondern wegen ihrer politischen Bedeutung. Warum „politisch“? Weil sie aus verschiedenen Gründen den Unterschied der Systeme in den USA und Iran darstellt.

At the beginning of the seventies, people in Southern California were looking for a successor product for dates that were not very successful on the domestic and export markets.

With considerable tax breaks and other subsidies, pistachio cultivation in the Central Valley and in Arizona was started. The planting material came from Iran, and to this day the only variety is named after the province of Kerman, the centre of cultivation. Before this time the USA imported large quantities of this nut from Iran. But as production in California grew, the trade barriers for the Middle Eastern pistachio nut became higher.

There was always an excuse to restrict imports.

The most common one is the anti-dumping law, which also prevents the import of lemons from Argentina, for example. The demand side developed stormy. Once banished as an exotic nut to an expensive corner, a German retail chain released it from its slumber with low prices. Thus began an unprecedented triumphal procession of pistachio and not only in Germany. Soon it was impossible to imagine the snack range without pistachios.

Anfang der siebziger Jahre suchte man im Süden Kaliforniens nach einem Nachfolgeprodukt für Datteln, die auf dem Inlands- wie Exportmarkt nicht so recht erfolgreich waren.

Mit erheblichen Steuererleichterungen und sonstigen Beihilfen zog man den Pistazienanbau im Central Valley und in Arizona auf. Das Pflanzmaterial stammte aus dem Iran, und bis heute die einzige Sorte hat ihren Namen nach der Provinz Kerman, dem Zentrum des Anbaus. Vor dieser Zeit importierten die USA große Mengen dieser Nuß aus dem Iran. Aber je mehr die Produktion in Kalifornien wuchs, desto höher wurden die Handelsbarrieren für die Pistazie aus dem Mittleren Osten.

Es gab immer einen Vorwand, die Einfuhr zu beschränken. Der häufigste ist das AntiDumpinggesetz, das zum Beispiel auch den Import von Zitronen aus Argentinien verhindert. Die Nachfrageseite entwickelte sich stürmisch. Einst als Exotennuß in eine teure Ecke verbannt, erlöste sie eine deutsche Handelskette mit günstigen Preisen aus ihrem Dornröschenschlaf. Both countries of origin have water problems, because without them world production would have exceeded one million tons long ago. So there is still a stalemate between supplier countries, with China playing a decisive role as a sales market, depending on the political situation.

Alternative origins have also benefited from this battle of the giants: former Soviet republics around Iran, certain Balkan countries, Argentina and Australia are pushing into the market. But we know that the pistachio tree takes seven to ten years to reach “economic” maturity. So it will be years before we see “Kerman” pistachios from Georgia, Romania and “Down Under” on the shelves in competitive quantities.

Der Markt wurde größer und war bald für Iran und die Türkei nicht mehr zu versorgen. Da kamen die kalifornischen Nüsse gerade recht; nicht so wohlschmeckend wie die Iraner, aber sehr schön anzusehen und mit dem amerikanischen Sinn für Merchandising klug auf den Markt gebracht.

Dann tauchte ein Gespenst über der Nuß mit dem frischen grünen Kern auf: Aflatoxin, Stoffwechselprodukt von Schimmelpilzen, möglicherweise krebserregend. Die phytosanitären Kontrollen wurden verstärkt, und siehe da: bei iranischen Nüssen hoher Befall, bei kalifornischen keiner. Das brachte vor allem in Europa Marktvorteile. Iran zog nach mit der schnellen Modernisierung der Branche, aber irgendwie blieb immer der Makel: die Pistazie aus dem Iran sei nicht gesund.

Beide Herkunftsländer haben Wasserprobleme, denn ohne diese hätte die Weltproduktion eine Million Tonnen längst überschritten.

So bleibt es bei einer Patt-Situation zwischen Lieferländern, wobei je nach politischer Situation China als Absatzmarkt eine entscheidende Rolle zukommt.

Aus diesem Kampf der Giganten konnten auch alternative Herkünfte Vorteile ziehen: ehemalige Sowjetrepubliken um den Iran herum, gewisse Balkanländer, Argentinien und Australien drängen auf den Markt. Wir wissen aber: der Pistazienbaum nimmt sich sieben bis zehn Jahre bis zur „wirtschaftlichen“ Reife Zeit. Es werden also noch Jahre vergehen, bis wir„Kerman“-Pistazien aus Georgien, Rumänien und „Down Under“ in konkurrenzfähigen Mengen in den Regalen zu sehen bekommen.

In the coming three years, Russia intends to import a record volume of nuts and dried fruits, stated the BusinessStat’s think tank analytical report in March in Moscow. Currently the country consumes more than 300,000 t of nuts per year, more than 70% of them bought abroad.

The authorities have proclaimed an import substitution policy in alimentation, but due to severe climate in this region, only hazelnut and few types of walnut and peanut can stand the winter season, while consumers expect a much wider choice. Therefore, experts believe, the import substitution will not fully work for the nut industry and consequently the country is doomed to import in huge volumes. Russia’s need for nuts and dried fruits will also increase due to some other, subjective, factors.

Among them is popularization of healthy lifestyle and proper nutrition. In a country, which previously did not differ in particular scrupulousness about state of the health of its citizens, the life style has changed dramatically. According to Russia Public Opinion Center

Stricter religious rules led to a decrease in vodka consumption, while softer drinks, like beer substituted strong alcohol. This victory of beer over vodka has stimulated a demand for all sorts of beer snacks, among them salty pistachios as one of the most popular.

Why nuts and dried fruit are so important during Ramadan

“Yameesh” is a word that goes back to 10th century Egypt, and is now widely used in other Arab countries to refer to dried nuts and fruits that are traditionally in high demand in Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting that has started on April 24th this year.

A few weeks before, people in Egypt and the rest of the Arab world traditionally head to the markets to stock up on prunes, dried figs, dried apricots, dates, sultanas and raisins, as well as an array of nuts, the most coveted of which would be pistachios, cashews, hazelnuts, almonds and walnuts.

In 2018, Egyptian imports of nuts and dried fruits reached $56m over nine months, while Saudi Arabia’s imports tripled over the three months before Ramadan to reach $103m in 2017.

WORLD dried fruits and nuts are prevalent there – in Yemen for example, sultanas and raisins are favoured, as the country has over 80 varieties of them, while in Egypt dried figs and prunes are the stars of the dish, as Egypt grows plums and figs in abundance.

Since the Ottoman occupation of Egypt in the 16th century, Egyptians have adopted the tradition of making a simple dish out of dried fruits and nuts, called “khoshaf”, a word that is an amalgamation of Persian and Turkish origins. It is a recipe of soaked dried fruits, most importantly prunes, figs, apricots, raisins or sultanas, coconuts, grapes, and dates. The dried fruits are lightly boiled and left to soak overnight, and served with a sprinkling of nuts that are soaked in rose water immediately after “iftar”, when Muslims break their fast at sunset. It is a nourishing and thirst-quenching dish that is full of natural sugars, vitamins, and minerals, exactly what the body needs after a

Since the 8th century and to this day, dried fruits and nuts were primarily imported from Syria. With the advent of the civil war, agricultural produce in the country has suffered heavily. This has had a profound impact on the market in Egypt and other parts of the Arab world, creating shortages and higher prices, a detriment to the majority of people who couldn’t afford the price hikes and expensive imports, especially since the devaluation of the Egyptian pound in 2016, driving up inflation while people’s incomes remained stagnant.

Organic Pistachios from Iran – that’s what you call a venture

Iran and the US are competing for the title of the biggest pistachio producer in the world. Not much information has been coming out of Iran lately. Axel Breuer talked to Alireza Azizian, managing director of Barani Orchards and asked him about the current situation and his product – organic pistachios from Iran.

How is the situation regarding the pandemic in your country?

Alireza Azizian: Yes, I am in Tehran. The situation regarding Covid-19 seems to get back to normal, however, people are afraid to be infested.

IRAN The Clipper: You are engaged in the organic production of pistachios. As there are not many of your colleagues in your specific business area, kindly let me know some more details.

Alireza Azizian: You are right: we are one of the few companies dealing with organic pistachios. We are certified with the USDA und BSC in Germany for organics, supplying customerts in Switzerland, Denmark and Germany. The respective tests for Aflatoxin went very well.

Our production area about 70 km away from Tehran is 1,300 ha with a yield of 500 to 800 t per year. We are selling in-shell pistachios exclusively as a raw material to European countries. On the demand side everything is slow.

The Clipper: Where do you see the problems right now?

Alireza Azizian: These are the sanctions. We are trying to get around with it. Compared with the situation two years ago, we are forwarding the majority of the exports by truck, because we do see very little sailings to our ports.

The Clipper: Usted está dedicado a la producción orgánica de pistachos. No hay muchos más en esta área comercial tan específica, por favor, denos algunos detalles.

Alireza Azizian: Cierto, somos una de las pocas empresas que se ocupan de los pistachos orgánicos. The Clipper: ¿Dónde emplaza los problemas a día de hoy?

Alireza Azizian: En las sanciones. Estamos tratando de evitarlas. En comparación con la situación de hace dos años, estamos enviando la mayoría de las exportaciones en camión, porque vemos muy pocas salidas a nuestros puertos.

IRAN The Clipper: I assume that most agricultural items are exempted from sanctions.

Alireza Azizian: The first and imminent trade barrier are payments. We can’t manage bankto-bank payments. So we are using other channels. What we are doing is selling to the traders, and they are directly dealing with the final buyers.

The other problem is that business visits are more or less impossible. Our customers, if they want to trust us, will see our plantations and the land where thde nuts are growing. On the other hand we want to show them that we are reliable partners.

The Clipper: How is the situation on the production side?

Alireza Azizian: This year the production came down because this winter we had frost The Clipper: Pensaba que la mayoría de los artículos agrícolas estaban exentos de sanciones.

Alireza Azizian: La primera barrera comercial son los pagos. No podemos gestionar pagos de banco a banco. Por lo que usamos otros canales. Lo que estamos haciendo es vender a los comerciantes, y ellos están tratando directamente con los compradores finales.

El otro problema es que las visitas de negocios son más o menos imposibles. Nuestros clientes, para confiar en nosotros, querrían ver nuestras plantaciones y la tierra donde crecen los pistachos, y nosotros por nuestro lado, mostrarles que somos socios fiables.

The Clipper: ¿Cómo está la situación de cara a la producción este año?

Alireza Azizian: Este año la producción bajó porque en el invierno tuvimos heladas durante la floración. Eso podría traducirse en pérdidas significativas durante la recolección. En general, el área de producción está creciendo, se han plantado muchas áreas nuevas.

IRAN during blossom. That might mean significant losses during harvest. Generally the production area is growing, many new areas have been planted. As the local market for pistachios is very limited all this new production needs to be exported.

And here, as I said before, the problems arise with sanctions. In Kerman the drought has caused the famers to move to other regions.

I expect that for the next ten years the water supply will not be sufficient for pistachio production.

The Clipper: Are there new developments in the trade, i.e. new companies joining the business?

Alireza Azizian: The pistachio trade in Iran is very traditional. A major part of the volume is still offered through the Grand Bazaar in Tehran. In general I understand that the pistachio business is still growing, because the quality of our nuts is just second to none.

Alireza Azizian: El comercio de pistachos en Irán es muy tradicional. Una gran parte del volumen todavía se canaliza a través del Gran Bazar de Teherán. En general, entiendo que el negocio del pistacho siga creciendo, porque la calidad de nuestros frutos secos es insuperable.

Green Diamond Tree, Tehran, is a major producer, trader and exporter of Iranian green gold, i.e. pistachios. The history of the company dates back to 1935 led always by a family member, now in the third generation.

Trading of pistachios from Iran has always been complicated due to biannual bearing of trees and -- more important --the political situation, which has in several variations hit the country. Now the list of trade barriers has been completed by the pandemic COVID19 disease, in short the Corona virus. Amirali Asgarowladi, managing director of Green Diamond Tree, has answered questions of The Clipper.

The Clipper: How do you feel about the actual situation in the dried fruit business?

Amirali Asgarowladi: The problems we faced in fact were multifold. The first and overwhelming challenge was to keep our staff safe by working in our factory. Secondly, due to political implications we have very much limited access to transportation means, and costs of bringing our nuts to our worldwide clientele are rising day by day. But, nevertheless, we are in position to manage our business under the given circumstances and will continue to deal with our customers around the world.

Of course we will have an watchful eye on the financial situation, as we have seen a lot of changes there.

The Clipper: According to news from different sources the food trade is less affected by the general limitation of free public movement?

Does this apply to the dried fruit and nut business in particular?

Amirali Asgarowladi: Yes, this is the case.

Our sector is less affected than other product areas.

The Clipper: Which are the preferred items in this “shaky” commercial and social environment?

Amirali Asgarowladi: Supermarkets are the only shops which stayed always open. This is acknowledged by consumers, and this resulted in a preference for dried fruit and nuts for people staying at home.

The question remains that you cannot be sure about these preferences as economical situation could be weaker by the times.

The Clipper: Please let me have an overview of the market for Iranian pistachios as of mid April 2020.

Amirali Asgarowladi: The market was active during March 2020, and – by the way – better than March 2018 in another “on-year”. Always in March we registered 11,123 t in 2017, 10,866 t in 2018, 4,503 t in 2019 and in March 2020 our exports were reaching 14,495 t.

In March we passed six months from the new crop 2019 (Oct 01, 2019 to March 31, 2020).

In these six months of time a total quantity of 85,000 t was exported from this country.

In general, 85,000 t standing in no way as a record figure. We would have expected 110,000 t in an “on-year”. The reason for this decline is the shrinking demand from China.

The total of 85,000 t exported is spread over the different types as follows: Open mouth inshells 63,826 t, closed mouth inshells 1,584, kernels with skin 12,989 t, peeled kernels 765 t, others 435 t. The total of the marketing season 2019/20 will be 60,000 t more with a carryover remaining at 30,000 t.

The Annual General Meeting 2020 took place on April 23.In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, shareholders could not attend in person.

La 153e Assemblée générale ordinaire de Nestlé S.A. s’est tenue le 23 avril au Centre de Congrès Beaulieu à Lausanne.

The meeting took place at the Beaulieu Convention Center in Lausanne and all legal proceedings were carried out as required. Shareholders were asked to exercise their voting rights through an independent law firm, who represented 57.8 percent of the capital and 80.1 percent of the shares entitled to vote.

Nestlé Chairman Paul Bulcke stated: “Our Annual General Meeting at Lausanne-Beaulieu took place today as planned, although unfortunately without the presence of shareholders. I am truly sorry that we were unable to meet in person this year because of the pandemic that is affecting all of us.”The annual review and the accounts were approved, as were the proposed dividend of CHF 2.70 per share and the planned capital reduction.

During the first quarter, our company remained resilient: Organic growth reached 4.3%, with real internal growth (RIG) of 4.7% and pricing of -0.4%. Growth was supported by strong momentum in the Americas and Zone EMENA. Zone AOAsaw a sharp sales decline. Total reported sales decreased by 6.2% to CHF 20.8 billion (3M-2019: CHF 22.2 billion). It has been decided to explore strategic options, including a potential sale, for Yinlu peanut milk and canned rice porridge businesses in China. The intention is to ensure the long-term growth and success of these Yinlu businesses, which had sales of CHF700 m in 2019. The company will retain its ready-todrink Nescafé coffee business, currently filled and distributed by Yinlu.

It is a strategic growth driver, and the company will continue to invest heavily in the brand in China. Qcify has been disrupting the quality control industry replacing manual quality inspection with a standalone device that provides automated analysis for nuts. But the company is aiming much higher. Just before the fifth anniversary of the company The Clipper asked where post-harvest is heading.

The Clipper: Five years ago you founded Qcify.

How did you start and where do you stand?

Raf Peeters: Most of the team members of Qcify have been in the sorting industry before.

We thought it was time for a technology that can be used on the quality control side of the business. In 2015 we founded Qcify, initially to develop a stand-alone quality control system that could be used by the quality teams of food processing companies.

We started with the treenut business as we are based in California. We brought the first automated quality control system to the market in 2017. This year we will introduce a new machine which will also be used for quality control purposes, but it is more of an in-linesystem instead of a standalone unit.

SORTING The Clipper: What is different about Qcify machines from existing QC and sorting?

Raf Peeters: We are working on optical systems like others, but not with a conventional vision approach but we have been focusing heavily on artificial intelligence and deep learning. All automation projects based on vision will eventually use the power of AI. In the past QC employees would take a sample from a certain position in the processing line, take it to the lab, pour it on the table and inspect every single object in the sample and classify it by USDA grades or an proprietary grading system. The results would be written down or entered into an ERP system.

With the Qcify system you do not need to even touch the sample. You would just pour

the sample into a machine, push the start button and after 4 minutes you would get a full analysis. Humans still need 10-15 minutes for a sample. When the Qcify machine is ready it either stores the data and can transfer the data to en existing ERP system – like Almond Logic, SAP, Nutware. You can get the work done with fewer people.

The Clipper: Does your technology help in times of Covid-19?

Raf Peeters: Social distancing is just very hard to do in food processing plants. There still so many people involved. If you have technology that requires fewer people you

The Clipper: ¿Su tecnología ayuda en tiempos de Covid-19?

The areas in the plant can be less crowded.

If your employees need to quarantine you might be short of skilled workers. The machine does not shake hands and cannot get infected. Humans will always be needed but they should have a supervising role. The technology is there. I think this is the big lesson from the current situation: I always said the next 5-10 years will see a lot of automation – the advent of Covid-19 has sped up the process significantly. Now everybody is just busy with keeping its operations running. But when this first phase is over companies will re-evaluate their processes.

The Clipper: Quality claims are a big part of the global business of nuts. Are you promising the end of these claims?

The Clipper: You had planned an event for your 5th anniversary. What did you plan?

Raf Peeters: Yes, we planned an event in California with our clients – and we also planned to visit a Baseball game here. We did not plan for Covid-19! We still do not know wether it will turn into a virtual event but we still plan to present our new machine which will definitely change a lot in post-harvest processes. Something will happen on June 25th, but we do not know yet how it will happen.

The Clipper: Can you give us more details about your new solution that will be presented in June?

Raf Peeters: We are strong believers in data and data-driven decision making. What we present will be a data-driven solution. One area is Quality Control and another area is line optimization.

The Clipper: Artificial Intelligence is a tool to automatically improve sorting algorithms.

Does the self-learning algorithm really see more defects or is it just another way to approach quality control?

Raf Peeters: If you take insect damage in almonds: Insects can damage the product in a million different ways. You will never be able to train every single occurrence of damage.

So there will always be something that the algorithm has never seen before. But the more it trains itself the lower the chances that something completely unexpected will show up.

This is why we make a full update of the algorithms twice a year. Every two months we analyze 90 million new images that we add to the classification – it’s an incredible amount of

The Clipper: Sorting technology is quite well developed. What is next for the technology and where do you think future growth is coming from?

Raf Peeters: Yes, the technology is already performing pretty well. So, the future is not about better performance of the visual systems. I actually think the next step is simplification. A plain RGB camera is able to solve the same problems as more complicated systems, you just need better software – the game will be played on the software side.

Another frontier will be interfaces. Any system in a production should be able to communicate with each other. As a sorting company I would not focus on adding more technology to detect 0.1% more foreign material. All sorting systems are still dependent on operators. And the only element you cannot fully control is the person who is running your machine: They can be very good at it or they can do a very poor job. In this case your sorter becomes a very expensive conveyor belt.

The hulling machine removes the green leathery skin of the nuts and separates them from both the in-shell product and any kernels.

The cracker, for which a number of new patents were registered, consists of two different technologies for soft shell almonds – a Shear Roll and a Rotary Sheller-Separator, and another cracker for the hard shell varieties. This equipment is the most direct shelling line in the industry. After shelling, kernels and shells go to a Smart Sorter. This is an intelligent PC-controlled gravity table, which separates shell from kernels, sending the kernels directly to the Tomra sorter. We’ve never offered such a “direct” cracking system where the ‘ins” and ‘outs” travel such a short

Although the state of the peanut crop in Argentina presents heterogeneous characteristics according to the geographic area being analyzed, in general terms the crop is in good to very good condition.

Despite the fact that April did not bring heavy rains to the peanut region, the crop managed to reach acceptable percentages of maturity, so the digging activities began to develop as planned. The exception occurs in those areas that came with a marked water deficit (mainly West and South) which will see their production yields reduced. There are also peanut lots affected by soil diseases (Sclerotinia for example), in which yield losses are also expected. Argentine peanuts are going through the last critical stages of the season, which will define the results of the crop 2019-2020. The meteorological conditions that have occurred up to now have been ideal to carry out digging and, to a lesser extent, harvesting tasks. Sunny, cool and windy days have made it possible for the Argentine peanut sector to focus on field work with all the existing resources.

In general terms, we will have a good peanut crop in Argentina this year, given that acceptable yields and low incidence of quality problems are expected. Although results of the previous season will not be repeated, the expectations are very good when compared to the historical records of previous seasons.

It is essential that the good weather conditions continue in the coming weeks, so as not to incur greater losses in the fields and to be able to receive in shell peanuts in the production plants with acceptable humidity

Con respecto a la demanda, no puedo distinguir entre una demanda real y una anticipación de la demanda. Es cierto que recibimos llamadas de Europa a este respecto. Aquí en Argentina, cuando se anunció la cuarentena, la gente se apresuró en acudir a los supermercados para comprar alimentos básicos.

Esto sucedió en muchos países. La demanda del exterior será mayor este año debido a una cosecha de cacahuete muy pobre en los Estados Unidos. Como saben, los Estados Unidos son junto con Argentina los principales suministradores mundiales de cacahuete de alta calidad.

The Pecan industry was just on the right track to get rid of oversupply. While retail groups are buying more than ever the food service industry is in hiatus – and that might shake things up again. While the long-term market impact of the Corona virus is still unknown, barring any significant supply chain disruptions, analysis of currently available Government and APC data would indicate that the industry has finally turned the corner.

This became even worse when the Trump tariffs were put into effect. At the same time Mexico had three record crops in a row. Then we had hurricane Michael which caused major damage. The shelling industry had lost millions of Dollars because the cost has been more than what they could get for

This could mean a new oversupply situation because we cannot ship to this major segment of the industry. What makes

Daniel Zedan: Algunas de las mismas cosas que están perjudicando a nuestra industria podrían crear problemas para la industria de la nuez. También se ven afectados por los aranceles en China. The problem we see is that the price is still too close to just breaking even.

The Clipper: What longer term trends do you expect?

Daniel Zedan: According to the Boston Consulting Group, by 2027, worldwide pecan production is expected to be 1.2 billion inshell pounds. However, due to recent changes in weather patterns, for the past three years, world supply has remained relatively steady.

While lower prices and increased supplies have resulted in the current market malaise, a shortterm tightening of supply should help to move prices higher, both for inshell and kernels.

The Clipper: It does not look as if trade shows were happening as they have been before. How do you react?

Daniel Zedan: Some of the important trade shows are usually scheduled for later in the year. We have to see how the situation evolves.

What we learned is that we can have great virtual meetings. The Covid-19 situation has forced the whole industry to look at new ways of doing business together. Our company quit going to trade shows years ago. I do not have to go to trade shows to continue my business.

Water distribution by a “hydro highway”

Mantener la superficie regada

The drought is undoubtedly the most severe risk. But, this is coupled by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the consequences of which have yet to reveal themselves to the world, and the fact that the global economy is at the brink of a recession that could affect exports.

La Corporación Reguemos Chile coincide en varios puntos con lo señalado por la autoridad. Por ejemplo, plantea la necesidad de que se realicen inversiones en nuevos embalses, obras de trasvase y, eventualmente, en la denominada carretera hídrica, que a juicio del director ejecutivo del organismo, Maximiliano Letelier, “es una forma de mejorar la distribución del agua dulce que hoy tenemos”.

The ‘Reguemos Chile’ corporation has stated the need to invest in new dams, interbasin transfer infrastructure and, eventually, the so-called hydro highway, which, in the opinion of the corporation’s executive chairman, Maximiliano Letelier, “is a way to improve the distribution of fresh water compared to what we have today”.

New desalination plants could also be built, given the fact that, among other reasons, they provide safety to the supply system, although Letelier admits that producing this water comes at a high cost, and their construction and operation can generate environmental issues.

When it comes to irrigation, the goal is to improve the water supply of surfaces that are being poorly irrigated, enhance the quality and efficiency associated to the application of irrigation water and rehabilitate farmland that currently has bad drainage. The main point regarding this matter is making sure that the land where water availability is decreased can still maintain the same amount of irrigated surface area. The State of Chile promotes irrigation and drainage works through

También financiaron proyectos para prevenir contaminación o mejoren la calidad de aguas utilizadas para riego, y obras de riego que consideren el uso de energías renovables no convencionales, entre otros. a regulation which, through public tenders, provides a bonus to cover a percentage of the cost of the projects that are selected.

“The maximum bonus depends on the type of beneficiary”, says Loreto Sagardía of the National Irrigation Commission’s Department of Irrigation Promotion (Departamento de Fomento al Riego de la Comisión Nacional de Riego -- CNR), the institution in charge of managing this project. “We are looking for water savings. The idea is for growers to use the same amount of water they’re using now to increase their irrigated surface area”, adds Sagardía.

In 2019, the funding available for the tenders associated to the law added up to 100,068 million pesos, or around US$130 m, which was allocated towards civil works, technical irrigation and drainage.

This funding was also used to finance projects that prevent pollution or improve the quality of the water used for irrigation, as well as irrigation infrastructure powered by renewable non-conventional energy, among others.

We’ve come up with a few theories along with our retail customers: one advantage of this product is that it doesn’t spoil. Perhaps a number of people have gone shopping to stock their pantry for three months, and, unlike fresh fruit, prunes are perfect for that.

On the other hand, prunes are strongly positioned in Europe as a chocolate substitute to quell anxiety.

Andrés Santa Cruz, CEO, Surnat In 2020, we are going to see a drop in production of about 20% compared to 2019,a year that had already experienced a slight decline compared to the previous season. A few factors contributing to this decreased harvest are drought, problems caused by fruit that fell off the trees due to sun scorching and, probably, a season with less fruit per tree. Moreover, the fresh D’Agen plum, which wasn’t even on the radar in the past, is consolidating its position in China, and that is taking some volume away from prunes. In five years, Chile went from exporting 3,000 t over the past six months, Chile has gone through huge social unrest, a prolonged drought that has mainly struck the central area of the country, and,
