It wasn’t rain yet, just dew. It dripped into the neck of Dr. Karen Lapsley, scientific director to the California Almond Board, after she announced research results that older women have fewer wrinkles if they eat enough almonds. The dew in the neck was relieved with a cloth; the wrinkles, however, require more intensive studies with more test subjects.
Room 1, where this opening event of the 47th Almond Conference took place, was a tent ,just like the other lecture rooms, not a permanent building. The convention center of the California capital is being renovated and most of it will be newly built. The Almond Conference, which since 2012 has gathered here between 1,000 and 2,500 delegates per year, had to find a new “roof over its head”. The location of choice fell on the huge grounds of “CalExpo”, an exhibition for agriculture, just outside the city limits. There are corals for viewing livestock with large iron gates, but hardly any permanent buildings for the lectures. The 2’500 exhibitors found shelter in the pavilion and another building. Press officer Daren Williams asked the audience if they were satisfied with this “camping version” of the conference. The farmers, used to living with the weather,
The Megatrends of the nut industry
Megatrends für Nüsse und Trockenfrüchte

What does the future hold for the nut industry? Things have been mostly great for a long time. In recent interviews with the Clipper Magazine Richard Waycott, President and CEO of the Almond Board of California and Phil Zadro, mastermind of the Australian and South African macadamia industry confirmed that nut demand is continuously growing faster than supply.
Hazelnuts and peanut consumption might see another boost due to the breakthroughs in allergy treatment. The macadamia industry is in the phase of doubling its global output within 10 years, a rare event in agriculture. The almond industry is constantly registering new production records, hazelnut production is spreading to new growing areas to meet growing demand. Oversupply will not be an issue any time soon: The growth of world population and consumption trends turning away from animal protein will boost demand for nuts for a long time. Even optimists will admit that most of the ‘lab-grown’ and 3D-printed meat will take a while to break through. In a recent documentary the founder of a startup in the US admitted that the cost of a single burger is still equivalent to a sports car. There is a lot of reason for optimism but also some worries on the horizon. We predict some interesting trends and we foresee some

New Protein The problem: Replacing animal protein The solution: Nuts Nuts will replace meat and dairy cheese much faster in the coming years. While meat from maggots might not be for everyone, a ‘nut burger’ made with sunflower seeds, cashews, fresh herbs and spices is a tasty and culturally acceptable replacement of meat. Why hasn’t it taken off yet? The ‘alternative meat’ startups are fighting to imitate meat as closely as possible, because they believe that consumers are addicted to the taste. I think that is a misjudgment and much of it is wasted time: We have been living with

2019 was a very challenging time regarding all the issues coming up or underway. What you see are the small changes and how they will have a broader effect and consequences. The strength of this industry is that we are pretty diversified. It is not the 60% tariff on almonds in China. China has been our third in line of export markets. So, a 60% tariff has a broader impact on the business we are doing there. Up to now you cant’s see a lot of effects on the consumers’ side. We are in a very dynamic and complex environment.
Jason Hafermeister, USDA Special Trade Advisor to Secretary Sonny Perdue, said “as we are going into this period of new thinking on trade” we have to bear in mind that US agriculture is surplus-based and dependant on exports and we should think about systems that help us keep these markets open. Since China has joined the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in 2001 it became a 20 billlion-dollar market from one billion before for the US-agriculture. What we want with China, Japan and India is a free and fair trade.
Brian Ezell, The Wonderful Company, about the trade with China: ”Trade volume between Australia and China increased by 14%. That was when the retaliatory Chinese tariffs on US agricultural goods were in place. The market

TRADE potential was and is there, fueled by our ongoing efforts on this very important market. The China per capita consumption of almonds just doubled in the last few years as Australia is replacing US shipments which are bearing a 60% duty. We hope that the actual situation will change as soon as possible.” China, Ezell said, is a very fast moving and evolving market presenting great opportunities. “Good morning, how have you eaten?” This is the typical morning greeting in China, as Connie Cheung pointed out. And this brought her directly to the point: marketing of almonds in her country. She referred to the social media scene: There is no public relations effort in China without the social media. A major shifting of volumes to other markets Julie Adams summarized the current situation in international trade: Nothing is

Predicting crops from a distance
Wie man durch Wolken schaut
Water or no water is equivalent to success and failure in agriculture. Understanding soil moisture will be one of the key technologies for future growth and preventing disasters. Satellites provide free and precise data already – but only very few people are able to convert this information into valuable assessments for growers. We talked to one company that is able to see through the clouds and predict crop performance.
The Clipper: Please tell us about your company and what you are doing. Robbert Mica: We are VanderSat, an earth observation company. We have a proprietary method well we provide three data sets for the whole world on 100 by hundred meters resolution for soil moisture - the amount of water in the soil, the land surface temperature and VOD, which is the amount of water in the crop. These three services are currently operational - and we are working on cloudfree NDVI. NDVI is the holy grail for agriculture and satellites. [We will explain below what NDVI is]. Cloud cover it is a huge issue for this method. We have solved this problem we will go online with cloud-free NDVI in the coming season.
28
THE CLIPPER 4-2019
TECHNOLOGY The Clipper: You are claiming that you can see water better than anyone else. Why and how?
Robbert Mica: I need to give you some background on this. The satellite is 800 km away from the earth. It senses certain transmissivity of the soil. The transmissivity changes with the amount of water in the soil. That’s what we detect. And we can detect that straight through the crop. The data in itself is very cool and very operational but you need to use the data within the application. We partner with the biggest agricultural insurance companies and crop protection companies in the world. then we build applications based on our data.
The Clipper: Does that mean we do not need soil moisture sensors in the future? No drones that detect water? Robbert Mica: We live in interesting times and as we come from science we strongly believe that still a lot of research is needed to figure it out. Every crop and every location behaves differently. When we get approached by an almond grower we would build the application together with the grower or a grower organization. The grower shares data from his spraying or irrigation protocols and we build the application in combination with our data. The Clipper: And now for something completely different: Bushfires in Australia are threatening plantations. If you can tell us about soil moisture can you also tell us about the risk of fires?

Four phases of inspection from the huller to the packer

The Clipper: There are different phases of detection in the Tomra system. Would you please elaborate on that?
The Clipper: Im Tomra-System gibt es verschiedene Phasen der Erkennung. Würden Sie das bitte näher erläutern?
Brendan O’Donnell: Pleasure. We start with the hullers with a three-phase system before the sizer in the processing plant and four machines right before the packing. We are using a new machine, called the Tomra 3C: it is a machine which has been designed to be installed with a huller. If you have a 3 C in the huller you are able to track down the mummies. The removal of mumies is a benefit for aflatoxin reduction.

Brendan O’Donnell: The removal of foreign material and mummies makes all the other steps more efficient. The first machines which you see with a processor is the X-ray detection. We don’t recommend the x-ray for every application, for example in Australia it is not necessary because the orchard locations are so remote that any contamination by glas, plastic or other will not or very rarely occur. The advantage of the X-ray is the fact that rejects are real rejects like metal, glas and not the product and the product is very clean.
The Clipper: Dies ist der erste Schritt. Welche sind die anderen?
The Clipper: Are all these phases stand-alones, I mean, can the processor say, I want phase one, but then only phase three? Brendan O’Donnell: In most cases we are building up our phases with what the processor already has. What we normally don’t have is a ‘perfect’ line. Take a piece of land and then you can do what you want. In most cases the users have a specific need and they want to include new machinery into their existing lines. We are not sorting grains, but we are sorting really high value products, and one per cent in your recovery rate can buy your set up every year. The Clipper: Aflatoxin is a problem, which originally came up in connection with pistachios. Now it is in the focus for almonds as well. How is Tomra helping to discover contamination? Brendan O’Donnell: We inspect the kernel. Our “detox” machine uses double sided lasers. These are specialty lasers with infrared capabilities which are designed to target aflatoxin and defects as well. It is necessary to see the aflatoxin. If it is inside the shell you can’t see it. You need to see some reflection of light coming back from aflatoxin. The Clipper: I think that you agree with me that the real problem is exactly that. Brown kernels, green kernels are relatively easy to inspect. As

GERMANY is a growing challenge that we are meeting by purchasing from different countries and both hemispheres. The Clipper: Which requirements do you actually have to meet to become a supplier for Seeberger? Joachim Mann: You need a lot of persistence and endurance. We look for suppliers who can shape change together. You need patience, because trust has to be built up. In our supply chain, we cannot afford to lose a container. We need quality along the entire production chain: it starts with the employee who takes care of the plants and ends with the person who puts the packaging on the shelf. We inspect every delivery that arrives at our premises. We have developed our own specifications that our suppliers must comply with. We have developed products together with our suppliers. Cranberries are one example: about 15 years ago we started with one supplier and we still work with the same supplier, with quantities we never thought possible.

Joachim Mann: Se necesita mucha persistencia y perseverancia. The Clipper: An outdoor experience this year at Calexpo, how do you feel about the almond conference?
The Clipper: Ein Outdoor-Erlebnis in diesem Jahr im Calexpo, was halten Sie von der Mandelkonferenz?
Richard Waycott: We spent a year planning for it, worked with the City of Sacramento, who is responsible for where we have been, the State of California, which is the owner of Calexpo, and there is another organization “Visit Sacramento”, which is the promotional engine for the city. We worked with these different entities, first trying to negotiate the best arrangements… The Clipper: I think you got a special price. Richard Waycott: (laughs) We got some incentives. But there were so many unexpected expenses of which you don’t think about initially.

USA The Clipper: At the end of the day it was more expensive than in former years?
Richard Waycott: Yes, it was. It was much more expensive. All the tents and the heating, different audiovisual equipment, and just not being in one place. It took more effort to organize this event, because it was so difficult to find out to whom to talk about what. And there were silly things: We wanted to have water coolers, supplied by a different company -and a fundamental question of how to get a cup of coffee. To sum up, it took more time and effort to organize it. But it came off very nicely, you agree? None of the tents fell down. We had efficient shuttle service to and from the downtown hotels. Under the circumstances it went well.
The Clipper: ..despite a few splashes of rain.. Richard Waycott: We worked hard to get a special cover for the tents, and it worked well with the light rain that we experienced. When I visited the area the first time – I was given a tour – the permanent buildings were full of animals, and I said: we will serve the meals here? They said: We will have everything clean up, don’t worry. Back to the business: your marketing budget, about 67% of the overall budget was lowered 24% for 2019 and another 17% in 2020. Look, that’s an estimate. There were two reasons for it. One is, obviously, we increased our spending with the temporary assessment increase over the past three years, we had more money, and now we have to decrease as the assessment has returned from 4 cents per pound to 3 cents. Our projections for production volume – you know, now with the assessment of three cents per pound – did not increase as we expected they would, therefore our revenue is lower than we were expecting. We expected that with the 2021/2022 crop we would be at 3 billion pounds, but this will not materialize. Our projections have brought us to a new reality. We still have a very robust budget. The budget for
The Clipper: ..trotz einiger Regenspritzer...

At this time social media was not only an extension of the traditional media, but engaging the young generation creating content in which they were really interested. Last year the use on social media was 1.5 hours average. People are spending 15 more days of their lives scrolling on contents in social media. People are here of all ages, not only 16 to 22 years but a lot around fifty and beyond age 65 as well. Advertising value on social media has gone to US$85 bn in the last decade. This situation is a tremendous opportunity and at the same time a tremendous challenge. The challenge is that on social media your message is competing with messages from your friends from your family. It’s a situation where you don’t stand out with the form and the content of your message. And it happens that advertisers go where the people are but they do not select the right way how to engage people. Social media is a mix between art, science and engineering.
US$ gestiegen.

2017 – steady at high levels Opened in the range of US$ 2100-2200; drifted down to US$1,800-2,000 and ended at US$ 2,100-2,300 2018 – volatile including a bloodbath Opened at US$2,200-2,400, crashed to US$1100-1500 and recovered a bit to US$ 1,500-1,700 2019 – steady at low levels Opened at US$ 1,500-1,700, drifted down to US$1,200-1,400, moved up again to US$ 1,550-1,700 Looking forward to 2020, my take on the market is: The oversupply built up in 2017/2018 which led to the downward trend from mid 2018 seems to have been eaten up. There does not seem to be any excess inventory in the chain. Kernel off-take during 2019 has been good in all markets Exports from Vietnam in 2019 will be close to 460,000 t compared to 395,000 t in 2018. Exports from India will be same as or just slightly higher. Exports from Africa will be

at least 50,000 t higher. Even if we reduce the quantity of unpeeled kernels exported from Africa to avoid double counting, we are looking at minimum increase during 2019 of 50,000 t (over 7% of kernel exports). Despite this, there will be no excess inventory in any market. If prices do not move up too much, it is reasonable to expect this trend to continue Lowest-highest: During 2018 and 2019, the gap between lowest and highest price on the same day has been very big – most times it has been US$0,40-0,50 per pound, never below US0,25-0,30 cents per pound. Although we can understand some difference based on quality, reliability as well as shipment period, such a large gap cannot be justified (or sustained). Wholes-brokens: The gap between Wholes and Brokens has also widened – Splits are around US$ 1.50 below W320 and LP are almost US$ 2.00 below W320. Even at these lower prices, demand is slow. Hopefully,
