Super Food for a new lifestyle
Super Food für neuen Lebensstil
If we think in terms of “super” and “mega”, we very soon come across the category Super Food, whose name is hardly scientifically justified. These are simply foods that are good for the body in terms of their nutrient content and that are possibly, but not necessarily, produced in a climate-neutral way.
These include goji berries with a very high content of minerals and vitamins. This super food, like others, is rich in antioxidants that protect the body from oxidative stress. The list continues with acai and aronia berries, chia seeds, ginger, pomegranates, acerola, physalis, chlorella algae and peanut. Since advertising the Super Foods business is absolutely vital, the category’s presence on social networks plays a far greater role than “old school” products such as citrus fruits, apples, bananas or tree nuts, which are recognized as healthy and equally or similarly valuable to humans. Their disadvantage is that they are well known and therefore boring because they are not exotic.

EDITORIAL Now a new Super Food is arriving. Long time, no see? Let’s dazzle back! There was once a peanut that is not a nut, but a legume, and that was chased like death and devil out of the German living rooms and the evening TV snack assortment, because in connection with beer it is supposed to make fat, produce gout and be dangerous for allergy sufferers. Now it comes in fresh clothes as super food, neatly packaged as a health-promoting and perfectly suitable for the modern lifestyle. What has changed? Nothing but the category, because its content of - admittedly good - fats remains the same. But the peanut fits into our lifestyle and is even said to have a life-prolonging effect. Welcome to the club of healthy and at least hardly climate-damaging plants, which are therefore praised to the consumer as sustainable and recommendable. This revaluation is good for the industry for two reasons: firstly, the outlawed peanut has been replaced on the snack market by more exotic tree nuts such as cashews or macadamias and was on the decline in demand in important sales countries, and secondly, it is in the process of losing a vital subsidy mainstay, especially in the USA, and the revaluation to super food comes just at the right time. Now trade and consumers want to know above all, and this is also a question of sustainability, whether this status will last for a long time and where it derives its justification from.

Farm in rural Georgia
Hazelnuts Georgia – Up, down, up?
Auf und Ab bei den Haselnüssen
The Georgia industry has been a rollercoaster with a short history of successes and failures. Production was nosediving in the last three years to a level that was threatening the existence of thousands of farmers. I met the people who contributed to a phenomenal comeback in a very short time – among them Merab Chitanava, Chairman of of the Georgian Hazelnut Growers Association. But let’s start at the beginning.
The Clipper: Tell us about the young, exciting and troubled history of Hazelnut exports from Georgia. Merab Chitanava: Georgia has always been a country of hazelnuts, traditionally in the Black Sea regions. The country started growing up in the hazelnut sector in 2003. People started actively planting in 2004. The Ferrero group arrived in 2007, Ferrero has its own farm in Georgia since then. That was a big hope for everyone in the industry, which was a big hope for everyone. In 2009 production also started in Kakheti near the Azerbaijani border as a consequence of the decline of wine exports to Russia. We had a huge boost in production in 2011/2012 because of the high prices that were sere set by Turkey.

GEORGIA 2013 and 2014 has been another big push for the industry because of the frost damage for the Turkish crop, which led to an incredible jump in prices. Georgia had its best harvest in 2015/16 – around 70,000 t of inshell hazelnuts. The exports reached 27,000 t of kernels valued at 186 m GEL (). This season the hazelnut exports were more valuable than wine exports. The Clipper: But it did not stay that way. Merab Chitanava: Exactly the season after that until last year we have suffered severe losses from the brown marmorated stinkbug – for a total of 3 years until last year. Georgia started losing the Russian and European market. In 2018 farmers started even cutting the trees. The sales price dropped to 0,50 USD per kilogram for hazelnuts from Samegrelo/Guria (Black Sea region). Hazelnuts from the Kakheti region did not have pest problems and were still getting good market prices. It was clear that we could not risk a fourth year of crop failure. If the trend continued many growers would stop growing and exporting hazelnuts and cut their trees. The Clipper: What steps did the industry take to turn things around? Merab Chitanava: The industry was lacking 3 basic elements for crop protection: Tools – like sprayers, chemicals and knowledge. So we reached out to various donors – Ferrero, the government and USAID. Luckily the government supported us with 1,500 sprayers and salaries for the additional employees. We reached out to the input suppliers and negotiated the lowest possible price for chemicals – basically without margin. We talked to the credit organizations and persuaded them to allow a grace period so they can buy and use the spraying materials and pay after harvest. That led to a very low price for crop protection: Growers have to spray every 20 days for a total of six times. The cost per hectare was as low as 280 Lari (). The association also gave out a certificate for every grower that applied the spraying regularly.

Watch out: Almonds from Georgia are coming – modern and strong
OJO! Las Almendras de Georgia vienen reforzadas
Georgia experienced a nightmare as hazelnut producer and exporter in the last three years. As a consequence, some smart entrepreneurs started growing almonds for export – with state-of-the-art technology. Currently 4 hectares are in full production. But it could be 3,000 hectares within a few years. The climate, soil and water supply are perfectly suited for almonds. We talked to one of the pioneers - Vakhtang Gogaladze.
The Clipper: Why did you become a commercial almond grower? One of the first in the long history of Georgia? Vakhtang Gogaladze: The country needs diversification. Georgia had so many problems with the stinkbug (a severe pest for hazelnuts) – and for three years hazelnut growers could not export at all. My partners and I are representing several companies like Netafim and AgroMillora. We found that growing almonds could be a smart way to create revenue in the future. The Clipper: How did you start? Vakhtang Gogaladze: We started from Zero. If you start from Zero you have to do it in the

GEORGIA best way possible to succeed. First we collected a lot of data. We went to the forest, the deserts – in west Georgia and mainly in East Georgia. We found a wild almond forest around the David Gareja monastery – The almond trees were perfectly healthy, a bit smaller of couse, but the genetic material was amazing. We even thought about marketing the DNA of the old varieties because they are so resilient. I learned about Super-high-Density production and I was convinced it is the future. It is very easy to operate, there is less labor involved. You are getting better quality because you are picking the nuts from the trees, which makes pasteurization unnecessary and you can preserve the taste. We selected one area close to Tbilisi with a low risk of late frosts. We put late varieties (we are using Spanish varieties – Avijor, Guara and Belona), which are blooming from end to march to middle of April. We are adding 3 more varieties this year. The first varieties were planted last year, this year they were already bearing – with small sizes of course. In the 3rd year we are expecting 60% of the full yield and in the 4th year the trees will be fully bearing. In a conventional orchard it takes much longer to enter full production.
The Clipper: ¿Cómo comenzó?

For the first time Georgia is producing walnuts and almonds for the world market. We wanted to know why and how and who is driving that change. We talked to Kateryna Poberezhna, Coordinator of Advisory Services for Local Agribusinesses in Georgia/DCFTA Adaptation Programme and coordinator of joint FAO and EBRD projects in agribusiness about the nut revolution in Georgia.
The Clipper: You are working for EBRD (The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development). What is EBRD? Kateryna Poberezhna: EBRD is a financial institution established for development. We invest in projects, most of them in the private sector, work on policy reform and provide technical advice, all which powers sustainable growth. I work in the advisory team of the agribusiness department. We provide support to scale up the efficiency of the investments we make. Agribusiness is a strategic development direction for EBRD in Georgia. FAO and EBRD have long-standing partnership

The Clipper: Sie arbeiten für die EBWE (The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development).
GEORGIA aiming to make agrifood systems stronger, greener and more inclusive. EBRD-FAO regional project East-Fruit is aimed at improving high value agricultural exports in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Georgia and Moldova. In Georgia we work on nuts and berries, greenhouse produce, apples and pears and table grapes with support of the EU4Business Initiative of the European Union. We analyze and communicate investment opportunities along selected value chains and build capacity of local producers through trainings, workshops and study tours. As an example, together with the group of Georgian growers we have just been in California to learn about production and processing of pistachio, almonds and walnuts. Georgia has no significant commercial production volumes for almonds, walnuts and pistachios so far but it is changing fast. The Clipper: The Georgian hazelnut sector was growing fast, but has experienced a setback in the last years. What happened? Kateryna Poberezhna: Georgia used to be among the top five exporters of hazelnuts along with Turkey, Italy, the United States of America (USA) and Azerbaijan, generating export revenue of US$ 179m (2016). But in the last 3 years there have been significant issues with the quality and quantity of the nuts because of the marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys). Exports dropped 50% in 2017 compared to 2016.

Was ist passiert?

It all started 1877 in Marageh, the „silent“ capital of the Iranian dried fruit industry. The first generation of the Rahmani’s were nut traders. 1931 they switched to dried fruit, and in 1954 Mohsen Rahmani, the second generation in the business took over.

In 1960 the trade with neighbouring Russia was thriving. The name oft he family disappeared from the official title in 1990 – the Azerbaijan Nuts and Dried Fruit Company came into being. Now expansion went on and on by establishing representation offices in Belgium and the Emirates.

Italiensche Nußbäume gedeihen im Süden von Rußland

Once planted, a nut garden can bring its owner profit for many years ahead. Aslan Khashir, a Russian businessman of Adygeya origin (it’s a region of the North Caucuses) understood it when he was yet a child. He has planted his first private garden back in the 2000’s. And right in time.
Economic sanctions against Russia were not in place yet, and the country enjoyed a solid cash inflow due to favorable oil and gas markets. So, people, who lived in consumer shortages forever, started to consume good stuff. The domestic demand for healthy nut food was skyrocketing. On this background, Khashir set up a nut processing company and called it “Orekhprom”. A quite ambitious name, to be honest, given that the ending “prom” in Russian stands for “industry” or “branch of industry”. But in fact, it turned out to be a real industry, at least for

Anuga 100 years: The right time for a global exhibition
The year 2019 marks the year of Anuga, because the world’s most important get-together of the food and beverage industry is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The first Anuga took place in Stuttgart in 1919 with the participation of around 200 German firms. The Stuttgart newspaper, the ‘Neues Tagblatt’, published an article on September 29, 1919: “It seems to be the right time for an exhibition where the merchants can inform themselves about the available offer.” Up to now Anuga is by far the largest food fair in the world with more than 7,000 exhibitors and 165,000 visitors from all over the world.
Based on the concept of an annual touring exhibition, further Anuga events were staged, among others in Munich in 1920, in Berlin in 1922 and in Cologne in 1924. With around 360 exhibitors and 40,000 visitors, the first Anuga in Cologne was the best event since its inception, which is why the organisers opted for Cologne as the permanent location. There were already eight focal exhibition sections

Ten trade shows under one roof
Zehn Messen unter einem Dach
In 1951, for the first time over 1,200 exhibitors from 34 countries took part, whereby Anuga ultimately established itself as the central international business platform for the food industry in Cologne scheduled every two years. In 1955, Konrad Adenauer, late Chancellor and something like the ‘father’ of the Federal Republic of Germany, showed his enthusiasm: “This show is impressive. You can be proud of it.”
Over the course of time, due to the staging of leading trade fairs such as ISM and Anuga FoodTec, the trade fair advanced from being a food and processing platform into becoming a trade fair purely for food and beverages. In 2003, the Anuga “10 trade shows under one roof” concept was implemented. Today, with 7,405 exhibitors and around 165,000 trade visitors from the trade and out-of-home market, Anuga has developed into the leading global trade fair for food and beverages.

Jurisdiction of the Waren-Verein Arbitration Court (§30 WVB). The clause “Waren-Verein terms in case of dispute (arbitration)” establishes the jurisdiction of the arbitral tribunal of the Waren-Verein. Arbitration Court 15/01 - Arbitral award of 22.08.2001) According to its letter of confirmation to the defendant, the plaintiff sold walnuts with the clause ‘DFA Terms and Conditions for all Californian certificates (Quality/Weight) Waren-Verein terms in case of dispute - arbitration’. The defendant did not pay the purchase price. In the arbitration it raised a plea of lack of jurisdiction of the arbitral tribunal as the letter of confirmation did not contain an effective arbitration agreement. The arbitral tribunal upheld the claim for payment. For the reasons: The clause in the letter of confirmation “Waren Verein terms in case of dispute (arbitration)” means, at least according to commercial understanding, a sufficiently clear agreement that in the event of a dispute on the basis of the Waren-Verein conditions the arbitration court of the Waren-Verein is called upon to decide. This already results from the $30 WVB, which

GERMANY stipulates that all disputes arising from a contract concluded under these terms and conditions or with the clause “Waren-Verein-Arbitrage” shall be decided by an arbitration court, namely that of the Waren-Verein, to the exclusion of any legal recourse.

If there would be a magic tool that would allow you to avail of two things - increase your health and your life span – I bet most of the audience in this room would take this opportunity. We all want to know what is the solution to slow down aging. Today we do have some scientific research about extending our life span. What is the secret about longevity? What is the definition of longevity? The answer is simply: living longer than the rest. A longer duration of a person’s life compared to other. If you get deeper into this question, it is not the simple fact that you live longer, but the quality of life spent. When you look at the global population the average life span is 72 years. If you look for the longest life spans, you will notice Japan with 84 years. The US ranks in the middle area with 79 years of life expectancy. Why do some people live longer than others? Is that due to the advanceness of medicine? Yes, we do see some progress in the last twenty to fifty years, most probably hwith the effect of some lethal disease which we do not see any more. Genetics, scientists tell us, will contribute 10% to longer life and life style 90%.

USA For a healthy lifestyle just eat peanuts One of the measures of life style among positive thinking, de-stressing and worshipping, an active family life is nutrition, i.e. consumption of super foods. What is a super food, which means a special nutrient-rich element for health and well being? There is a worldwide search for super foods and we have found some berries like Goji berries, Jackfruit and fruit like avocadoes, and we have found one, which we should have special awareness of – the peanut. The media has identified peanuts as a superfood. Why that? Because peanuts fit into the scheme as nutrient-rich, full of antioxidants and by that especially beneficial to human health. Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the USA 1977-81, said: ”For a healthy lifestyle just eat peanuts!” The question remains: Is this actually backed by science? Due to a study based on 500,000 subjects presented at a conference of nutrition experts in Baltimore in June 2019 peanuts and all kinds of tree nuts lower the risk of cardiovascular , liver and kidney diseases as well as cancer.

Sherry Coleman Collins
Let’s talk about allergies
Das Problem der Erdnussallergie
The story behind peanut allergies in fact seems to be very dynamic, said Sherry Coleman Collins, Dietitian Nutritionist, National Peanut Board. In 1990 British Medical Journals reported about severe allergic reaction with children after having consumed peanuts or peanut butter products.
In 1995 the “Wall Street Journal” described the situation for patients with peanut allergies as being “under constant alert”. Three years later, the US Department of Transportation considered peanut free zones to be established on passenger aircraft. There was an abundance of studies after that. In 2000 a warning was released concerning peanuts of peanut products in baby food. It was said that self-reported cases of peanut allergies were doubtful, and in 2010 finally a study came to the conclusion that all claimed peanut allergies are not caused by peanuts alone but by a combination of several components. At the same time a guideline has been published which does not say expressively that peanuts are always the source of anaphylactic reactions, but asked user to pay attention to this fact.
“First of all there is the need for better diagnostic methods” “In general differentiation between sources of anaphylactic reactions is not easy. What we are looking forward are standards and modern diagnostic methods.” And what, if a

USA peanut allergy has been detected? There a lot of tools like vakzines, probiotic and biological measures as well as enzyme blockers. The guidelines from the early 2000’s will be revised together with safer methods of diagnosis. She concluded her presentation with “What we’ve learned” and “What we are doing?” Pediatricians underestimate the consent of parents to introduce peanuts to children early. There is a lack of concern about potential reactions. The goal must be to continue work with experts in order to address gaps preventing wholesale adoption. While branded products are not necessary, some parents want them. Advice should be given in general terms without mentioning any specific brands.

Relief Strategy for Peanut Farmers
Formed in 1998, Southeastern Peanut Farmers’ Federation (SPFF) was established to allow Southeastern peanut producers to speak with a unified voice. Often, particularly in Washington, state representatives are asked for the position of other southeastern states on policy issues.
In order to avoid follow-up from each single state, a position held by the SPFF represents a position of all four states. It has, also become an umbrella for other activities and projects, besides promotion, that the three organizations undertake collectively. SPFF is comprised of the Alabama Peanut Producers Association, the Florida Peanut Producers Association, the Mississippi Peanut Growers Association and the Georgia Peanut Commission. These are the respective “check-off” organizations in each state. The SPFF board consist of eight members comprised of the chief elected officer and the executive director of each organization. Action requires unanimous agreement.

US Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue recently announced further details of the US$16 bn package aimed at supporting American agricultural producers. In May, President Gerald J. Trump directed Secretary Perdue to craft a relief strategy in line with the estimated impacts of retaliatory tariffs on US agricultural goods and other trade disruptions. The Market Facilitation Program (MFP), Food Purchase and Distribution Program (FPDP), and Agricultural Trade Promotion Program (ATP) will assist agricultural producers. Secretary Perdue said“The details we announced today ensure farmers will not stand alone in facing unjustified retaliatory tariffs while President Trump continues working to solidify better and stronger trade deals around the globe.
