FROM THE EDITOR the beginning of something beautiful

It is with great pleasure that I write this letter for the inaugural issue of theCITYSCENE Magazine.

Brought to life during the seemingly endless days of the Coronavirus pandemic, theCITYSCENE has taken shape as a great love letter to Pittsburgh itself. During a time when it felt as if our communities, nation, and the entire world were more separated than ever, an idea was born to celebrate togetherness and connection within our great city. Just when it seemed that “all news was bad news,” our intended mission became to focus on the good and to be a positive local voice.

Our staff went to work capturing the things we most love about Pittsburgh, from the diverse culinary offerings and the growing nightlife scene to the shopping destinations, festivals, and most importantly – the people. We’ve worked tirelessly to refine our voice as the city guide to the city scene, dedicated to showcasing what makes Pittsburgh an exciting place to live, work, and play. Just as our city continues to grow and evolve, our intention is for this publication to grow and evolve – with support from our readers, contributors, and community.

I could not be more proud of the hard work, dedication, and love that our staff has put into this issue. Without each one of you, this would not be possible. And to our abundantly talented publisher, Elias Hanna: your vision for this magazine has been the necessary inspiration to bring our creativity to life.

Readers, I truly hope you enjoy this first issue—and that you’ll return month after month to continue this journey alongside us.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

“Choose a job you love, and you'll never have to work a day in your life,” Confucius is supposed to have said.

At theCITYSCENE, we adhere to these wise words.

And why do we love our jobs?

Because we love to try amazing restaurants, seek out great nightlife, drink the best bourbons, hit the casino, win money – then spend it locally on watches, clothes, and shoes at some of Pittsburgh’s best retail shopping headquarters.

We also love to stay at the best hotels, indulge in fancy coffee, eat delicious pastries and talk about lifestyle and culture. Last but not least, we know that we must somehow stay healthy and fit while doing it all – so when creating the vision for this publication, we knew we had to incorporate health and wellness advice into every issue.

theCITYSCENE family is a team of like-minded writers, graphic designers, photographers, and marketing gurus who are on a mission to share our amazing city with you. We treat having fun like it’s our business – because it is.

In publishing, there’s something called voice: our voice speaks to you from the position of a trusted friend.

So, if you want to know the best spots for shopping, dining, dancing, and romancing in and around Pittsburgh – simply follow us in print and online.

theCITYSCENE Magazine is your city guide to the city scene, a lifestyle magazine without stuffy limits.

Mitcheson Pilek and Jen Zatko Atchison, their Vandergrift boutique is where best friends, entrepreneurship, and fashion sense come together.

Natives of Kiski Valley, Dessie Mitcheson Pilek and Jen Zatko Atchison met in high school and quickly formed what would become a lifelong bond. After graduating from Kiski Area High School in 2009, life took them in separate directions but they managed to maintain their long-distance friendship over the following years. Atchison stayed local and worked as an X-ray technician for seven years, while Pilek moved west

to Southern California and launched a modeling career. It was this difference in geography that helped inspire the name of their online business, East West Boutique, debuting in May 2021. “Our motto is ‘fashion from coast to coast’,” says Atchison, highlighting their goal of procuring size-inclusive styles from all around the country. Their brick-and-mortar location opened soon after in November 2021, after hitting their online sales goals 5 months ahead of schedule. “It’s honestly been a whirlwind for us. We’re so

thankful to the local community for their support.”

Interacting with the pair at their store in Vandergrift on a busy Saturday morning, that support was apparent. Customers sauntered in and out, trying items on in large fitting rooms, purchasing gifts for friends, and asking both Atchison and Pilek for suggestions. It was clear that these lifelong friends have also developed true connections with their customers, offering personalized recommendations and recalling details from previous orders.

“It’s important for us to give people a personalized experience. We want everyone that walks through our doors to feel special and welcome here,” remarks Pilek. “That is really what East West is all about.”

Entering the boutique from Grant Street, the exposed brick walls and original hardwood floors are beautiful nods to the building’s history. The pair have done a phenomenal job of blending the

historical atmosphere of the Vandergrift area with their modern offerings at East West. Customers can expect an ever-changing display of highquality clothing, shoes, handbags, jewelry, and other accessories at affordable prices.

Both women act as buyers for the boutique, traveling across the country to choose the styles and brands that they feel capture the essence of East West. “We’re modern Boho with a twist,” says Atchison. “You won’t find ‘mall clothes’ here,” Pilek adds. “We really felt like people were getting away from the malls, the big chain stores. Our customers appreciate that we offer

unique things, that we’re local, we’re from their community and helping to bring Vandergrift back to what it once was.”

Atchison spoke about the shopping struggles she remembers growing up in Vandergrift. “My mom would have to drive me all over the place to shop for new clothes. As a busy mom, it was really frustrating for her, and now as a mother myself I understand how important it is to have local options.”

Vandergrift, like many areas in Pennsylvania, is experiencing strong revitalization after decades of economic standstill. “Seeing other small businesses opening around us has me more excited than ever for this area – we have new restaurants, retailers, breweries coming in now. It’s a great place to be!” says Pilek. Both women have made a point to be active community members, organizing community-wide body-positivity events and participating in Vandergrift's Gatherings on Grant.

Celebrating the one-year anniversary of their grand opening last month with a customer appreciation sale featuring complimentary champagne and giveaways, the pair are eager to look forward to the future, growing their business as well as their community.

RUE BOUTIQUE

Offering clothing and accessories as well as home and beauty products, this storefront in McCandless Crossing is a local gem.

Growing up in Israel in the 70's, Rue Boutique founder Ayellet Rubinstein learned first-hand from her parents what it means to have strong work ethic. As a fashion lover, she babysat and worked every summer so she could buy those coveted "must haves" on her list. Rubinstein got her first taste of the fashion industry working as a store manager in a boutique in Tel -Aviv. Running a small business and attending to customers came naturally to her and she did it with great joy. In 1990, she moved to Pittsburgh to join a family business.

After 25 years of building a different retail destination, she aspired to branch out on her own and create a fresh new concept in retail as she knew it. Inspired by a trip to Paris, her lifestyle boutique opened its doors in November 2016 as Rue Boutique and encourages cutomers to cherish the old – and embrace the new. With gorgeous, high-quality apparel and jewelry, plus unique home decor and furniture not found anywhere else, customers are sure to fall in love with this one-of-a-kind shopping destination.

MERRY MISTLETOE

1IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS The holidays are for spending time with family and friends to share good spirit and holiday cheer. But the holiday season can also be a stressful time, especially for the woman in your life. Women usually pay extra attention to the holidays, making sure that everything is perfect for the ones that are most special to them. Gentlemen, in the days leading up to Christmas, a box of chocolate-covered pretzels, some fuzzy socks, or a holiday scented candle will melt her heart.

2TAKE A SLEIGH RIDE The idea of an old fat man fully clad in a red suit, dashing through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh may not be the most romantic image ever. But there is a lot to be said for a classic sleigh ride this time of year. Bring a nice bottle of wine, bundle up under warm blankets, hold hands, and –if you're lucky – kiss under the stars for an unforgettable romantic night out.

3PLAN A WEEKEND GETAWAY Nothing says Christmas like 80-degree weather and palm trees by the pool. Hop on a plane or fire up the family sleigh and escape together. If the tropics aren't on your list, book a weekend at a winery or spa or spend a few nights at one of Pittsburgh’s luxurious upscale hotels and let someone else serve the coffee, make the bed, and stir up a thirst-quenching morning mimosa filled with vitamin C, Dom Perignon, and not a worry in the world.

TUCK THE ELVES IN EARLY AND COOK DINNER

54The winter holidays are extra special for children – but the fact is, kids can sometimes add to the stress of the season. If you really want to make a difference, take on bedtime duties with the little ones and plan a nice meal for just the two of you. You don’t have to be a trained chef to step into the kitchen. Pick something you can cook together, have fun, and keep the flame alive.

DON'T GET YOUR TINSEL IN A TANGLE

DESTRESS BY THE FIRE Baby it's cold outside – so light the fire and set the mood for a relaxing night in. Play her favorite songs or snuggle up for a holiday movie marathon. And for the ultimate way to win her heart and show her you care, a foot massage will provide relaxation and reduce her stress like nothing else.

Let's face it: a huge factor in holiday stress is dealing with the in-laws. Ellen Griswold got it right when she said, "...it's Christmas, and we're all in misery." Nevertheless, your partner's family should be treated with love, consideration, and a little extra patience during this season. Don't add to the chaos by being a Grinch. Help her pick out the gifts, grab the spirits, and wrap some presents. Take it upon yourself to organize time with both sides of the family instead of just showing up when you're told to. Even though the holidays can be hectic, it’s important to focus on having fun, enjoying great food and delicious cocktails, and making others feel special.

MISTLETOE

Gentlemen, you're in luck: theCITYSCENE intercepted several letters to Santa, analyzed the data, and discovered the top 10 things every woman wants from her partner, especially during the holidays. Here's how to secure your spot on her Nice List this year.

7"Onthe10thdayof Christmasmytruelovegavetome:aheartfeltcard tellingmehowmuchheloves, adores, andappreciates me." Sure, those may not be the real lyrics, but we think they should be. Simply sharing why you love her can mean the world. Hallmark is still in business for a reason, after all.

PENCIL SWEET NOTHINGS

DON'T SUBMIT A 20 PAGE CHRISTMAS LIST REQUEST FORM

For men, Christmas shopping sometimes consists of running around like a rabid reindeer on Christmas Eve trying to locate, purchase, and somehow wrap something up for a special someone. But please note, she's probably been searching for clues at least 6 months in advance for your perfect present. However, you're not an overgrown 8-year-old, so when she asks you what you want for this year don't submit an extensive list of expensive golf clubs, flat screen TVS for your man cave, or 23 of this year’s hottest new gadgets. You could however drop a few hints on things that you enjoy so she isn’t so stressed - just don't add to the stress with out-of-thisworld requests. Most importantly, remind her that there could be no greater gift than just spending time with her for the holidays.

GIFT SOMETHING FROM THE NAUGHTY LIST

Looking to spice it up for the holidays? Make a nice dinner, dine on those well-known aphrodisiac foods, and sip some fine spirits. Turn on some Christmas slow jams, light those holiday candles, and slip into a hot and steamy bubble bath together.

bonuspoints

GET THE TREE WITHOUT BEING A GRINCH

If there's anything those viral TikToks have taught us, it's that there's something sexy about a man brandishing an axe in 12-degree weather. Cut the tree down, strap it to the car, and bring it home like the prize trophy it is. No grinchy grumbling or complaining – and definitely no squirrels – please.

During the festive season, many women want to feel like they are in a Hallmark movie. So, take her ice skating and hold her hand as you skate around like an elf, then sip some delicious hot chocolate together while welcoming snowflakes on your head. Give her your ear muffs or jacket to show her your thoughtful and protective side. Don't forget to enjoy Pittsburgh’s best outdoor ice-skating rink, located beneath the world’s most Ginormous Christmas Tree (at least to us!), at PPG place downtown. While in the area, be sure to treat her to a romantic dinner at one of the city's many fine restaurants, such as Ruth’s Chris – located directly across from the ice rink. It’s their 35th business anniversary in the city of Pittsburgh, which is all the more reason to celebrate!

JAZZ

Delectable food, great drinks, and swingin’ tunes. What better way to beat the winter blues than by visiting Con Alma?

Con Alma really is the best of both worlds: for musicians and foodies alike, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a night out on the town with your friends or partner. The downtown location, which opened in the spring of 2021, is the perfect addition to Pittsburgh’s already lively cultural district.

Whether at Shadyside or downtown, you'll find live jazz every night they’re open. (Plus, Con Alma downtown recently added a New Orleans Brunch from noon to 3:00 on Sundays!) The music starts around dinner time so that you can enjoy everything Con Alma has to offer without missing a beat. You won’t find finer jazz musicians in Pittsburgh!

When the band starts to play and you’re trying to shake off the chill of the winter air, warm up from the cold and start your visit

with a perusal of the inventive cocktail menu, which is larger than the food menu (they know what’s important). Along with around 10 seasonal cocktails, they offer Con Alma Classics like the curious Carrot Sangrita; served in two parts, this drink has mezcal, fresh carrot juice, lime, sea salt, agave, and sour orange. You can mix them together after a few sips or enjoy them separately. Want to stick with something a little more predictable? Choose one of my favorite drinks that very few places have on the menu or even know how to make: the Old Cuban. This delicious cocktail contains local Maggie’s Farm Spiced Rum, mint, angostura bitters, lime, agave, and Seltzer. They also have a nice variety of beer, from things like Guinness and Miller Lite to Modelo and Bell’s Two Hearted Ale.

Con Alma’s menu is as creative as the music, fusing South American and Asian cuisines. They also conveniently label their menu items gluten free, and let you know if a dish is or is able to be prepared vegetarian or vegan. For the omnivores, gluten-free, and veg friends alike, let me suggest my favorite dish to start the meal, offered at both locations and altered slightly at Shadyside: the Patatas Dulce Bravas. This dish is perfect to share and to munch on before, during, and after your meal (“dulce” means “sweet,” after all!). This dish is made with fried Japanese yams, jalapeno miso, cotija, pepita, pickled fresno, and cilantro. You can’t go wrong with this! You have sweet mixed with the heat from the jalapeno miso and fresno chili peppers, the salty cotija cheese, and the softness of the yams mixed with the crunch from the pepitas. It’s a dish that’s sure to please any palate!

Still feeling the chill in the air? Heat things up with a couple of curry dishes. The Dal Curry is vegetarian (vegan in Shadyside), and is made with Indian red lentil curry, mixed pickle, rice, and pita. At the downtown location, for seafood lovers, try the Thai Fish Curry, with black grouper cheeks, sea scallops, shrimp, yellow curry, snow peas, Chinese shitake, cilantro, chive, and rice. This is gluten free and can be made vegetarian by swapping out the fish for tofu. Just craving a good steak? The carne asada is always a great choice. A generous but not overbearing portion, this is marinated and grilled flank steak, chimichurris, rice, black beans, cilantro, jalapeno, and relish. Prepared to order, this hearty meal is sure to have you feeling satisfied by the last bite.

Even with winter temps dropping, sometimes you just need a little ice cream! Con Alma delivers by serving a seasonal selection of Leon’s ice cream sandwiches. You may see flavors like chocolate peanut butter, heath, and cinnamon oatmeal. Split one or enjoy it all to yourself.

This winter, if you find yourself wondering what to do, head to Con Alma for drinks, dinner, and some of the finest musical entertainment Pittsburgh has to offer.

In order to support local musicians and the Pittsburgh music scene, Con Alma adds a $10 music charge per person during live music hours.

DINE VIP-STYLE WITH PRIVATE CHEF FRANK

Over the past two and a half years, the Covid pandemic has wreaked havoc on the restaurant industry, increasing demand for personal and private chefs across the globe. Would-be restaurant goers are starting to seek out more personalized experiences when it comes to their cuisine choices, as well as trending away from traditional catering options for their events.

Right here in Pittsburgh, we are lucky to have a personal chef who could find himself at home in any fine dining establishment worldwide. Instead, private chef Frank Tokach creates culinary masterpieces right in the comfort of your home.

Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, Chef Frank found his business niche in cooking, but to say that he had sauce running through his blood would be an understatement. His grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather were all executive chefs in restaurants in Italy. However, he tells us it was his grandmother who really drove his passion for serving delectable cuisine, and that he possibly learned more in her kitchen than during his time in culinary school – where he graduated top 3 in his class. "My grandma was always cooking for the whole family. It was her way of showing love and that emotion really came through in the meals she served us. My best memories are of helping her cook and learning from her."

After completing his externship at Caesar’s Palace in Lake Tahoe, he returned to Pittsburgh, starting out as a line cook at Pittsburgh Rare – a steak house which was located inside the Sheraton Hotel in Station Square. After several months of hard work, determination, and a remarkable display of ability, he was promoted to his first executive chef position.

Since then, he has achieved that same role (as well as food and beverage director) for country clubs and restaurants throughout the area. And if that wasn’t an impressive enough resume, Tokach has even created dishes featured in Food and Wine Magazine.

With over 20 years of experience as an executive chef inside and outside of professional kitchens, Tokach says that it’s the personal connection he experiences through his private chef service that he values the most.

It is clear he has a true love for cooking, and isn’t shy to tell us that love is oftentimes found in the kitchen. He points out that couple’s cooking classes have become a popular offering for

42 | theCITYSCENE | Culinary Close Up

private chefs across the country – especially around Christmas and Valentine’s Day. "Couples of all ages and cooking levels enjoy my classes. It's something you can create and enjoy together. When you're working and learning together, that's when the sparks fly."

Tokach's approach to his personal cooking services is client-centered. He works with each person to create fully custom menus, sourcing only authentic ingredients and the freshest seafoods, meats, and produce available. And on top of that, he does all the shopping and cleanup – so you truly don't have to lift a finger.

Chef Frank's sensational dishes may be the star of the show, but his warm demeanor, outgoing personality, kind smile, and contagious laugh will make you feel like you're right at home (and with him, you may very well be). Whether you're looking to increase that soulmate connection through cooking classes with your partner or hosting a private event in your home, look no further than private chef Frank Tokach.

Private Chef Frank Tokach is a member of the United States Personal Chef Association.

ST. NIKOLAUS BOCK PENN BREWERY

One of Pittsburgh’s oldest breweries is engrained in the steel town’s beer history because it has been producing phenomenal beers since 1986. The brewery in Pittsburgh’s North Side is a must visit, and feels like you are in a charming European town - it has a great atmosphere, food, and of course beer list. One of their winter beers in particular compliments the brewery’s warming ambience, St. Nikolas Bock. This 6.5% ABV beer is European style that’s rich in maltiness, chocolate, and caramel, and hits the spot with any dessert!

Location: Pittsburgh, PA; distributed locally and surrounding region

Santa’s Secret Stash

It’s the most wonderful time for a beer.

The holiday season is here. You may be spending more time catching up with friends and family, exchanging gifts, enjoying savory meals, and imbibing on alcoholic beverages. If beer is your drink of choice, Pennsylvania has an abundance of breweries that crank out some fantastic holiday-styled beers. Luckily for Pittsburgh, many of these beers are made in the Steel City, or from the surrounding region. If you are looking for some classic brews to try this holiday season, here are 10 Pennsylvania holiday beers to get you into the holiday spirit

SANTA! I KNOW HIM! EVIL GENIUS BEER COMPANY

Philadelphia- based brewery Evil Genius is known for cleverly naming their beers after pop culture phrases, so of course they named their holiday beer after a classic holiday movie. Santa! I Know Him! is a 7.2% ABV holiday Saison, which is a dry Belgian-style ale. It’s made with roses, chamomile, and has a slight spice to it, and is easily enjoyed by many! If Buddy the Elf had a beer of choice, this would be it.

Location: Philadelphia, PA; distributed statewide

THE MAD ELF TRÖEGS

You may have heard of Tröegs before, or even tried some of their beers! It’s definitely a Pennsylvania staple in the beer world. While this Hershey-based brewery has so many popular beers for every season, one beer they are most legendary for is their spicy-Belgian cherry beer, Mad Elf. Procced with caution on this one - it clocks in at a whopping 11% ABV, and is indeed a sipper! Mad Elfs can sneak up on you because the booziness is masked by a slightly sweet cherry honey flavor, and is so enjoyable!

Location: Hershey, PA; distributed statewide

IG: @troegsbeer

BIG BLACK VOODOO DADDY VOODOO

Meadville-based Voodoo Brewing has made a splash across Pennsylvania in recent years by expanding their locations throughout Western PA. Obviously, they are crushing it with their beers, so let’s raise a glass to their success. One holiday Imperial stout that will put you under a voodoo spell is Big Black Voodoo Daddy. This boozy 12% stout is a mouthful of chocolate - malty goodness, and not overpoweringly sweet. It’s just the right balance of hops, chocolate, and malts that’s perfect for a cold winter night.

Location: multiple locations throughout PA; distributed statewide IG: @voodoobrewery

CHRISTMAS ALE

SLY FOX BREWERY

Sly Fox Brewery makes some tasty beers all year round, and their Christmas Ale is a must try. It is a 6.3% ABV malty red ale, with lots of ginger, cloves, and spice. This Pottstownbased brewery has two new-ish locations - one in Downtown Pittsburgh, and the Highline in the South Side. While you enjoy one or three of their beers, you will get an amazing city view!

Location: Pottstown, PA; Pittsburgh, PA; distributed locally and statewide

IG: @slyfoxbeer

Whether these 5 beers tempt you to give them a try or are already among your holiday favorites, there are

countless other amazing local breweries all around the region that make holiday beers. Everyone has a different taste in brews, and sometimes you need to try different styles to find the type you like best. The beauty of having so many breweries in the Pittsburgh area is it allows you to go out and find what fancies your tastebuds the most! To support local breweries this year, perhaps try something different with your family and friends and hit up a brewery… or two. After all, ‘tis the season to eat, drink, and be merry. Cheers!

Melisssa Palmieri is bringing the party to Pittsburgh with her mobile bartending service. Whether you're throwing a party for friends, celebrating a special occasion, or hosting a corporate event, she is sure to serve up a great time with her fully stocked bar and personal touch.

MIXOLOGIST OF THE MONTH

Q: What do you like most about bartending?

A: I've always been a people person, so I really love the social aspect of bartending. At many of our events, the host will have friends and family who've traveled in from different parts of the country and even other countries. I love meeting new people and learning about different cultures.

Q: How would you describe your customers?

A: My guests never fit into a square box. I have worked for just about everyone. From graduation parties, birthday parties, and anniversaries, to baby showers, weddings, and corporate events – every event has a different vibe. We are happy to serve any type of event in the entire Pittsburgh region.

Q: What experience do you have in bartending?

A: I've been bartending for over 12 years. I have bar, nightclub, VIP private events, and restaurant experience. I love to work hard individually and with my team.

50 | theCITYSCENE | Mixologist of the Month

Q: What alcohol safety training or certifications do you have?

A: Everyone that works for my company is TIPS Certified and RAMP CERTIFIED. Additionally, Elite Bartending & Staffing is fully insured and prior to an event we meet with the coordinator and discuss the event's policy on alcohol and strictly adhere to the rules.

Q: What's your favorite drink to make?

A: A classic Mojito is my favorite drink to make! It smells amazing and has a beautiful presentation.

Q: Would you say you have a signature style when it comes to making drinks?

A: I really love being creative and mixing up new ingredients when people are indecisive about what they are having. I have had many guests say, "Just make me something great!" So, I dive into my creative bartending skills and create something from scratch. From that point forward, the drink becomes their own personalized signature libation. All night long guests will come back to the bar and ask for the “Jessica” or the "Christopher." My job is not only to mix up cocktails, it’s also to serve fun and entertainment.

Q: What made you start your own company?

A: I have just as much of a passion for entrepreneurship as I do bartending. I've always wanted the freedom that owning a company brings. So, I combined my two loves and brought Elite Bartending & Staffing to life.

Q: If someone wanted to book your services for their next event how could they find you?

A: All my bookings are made through my website, which can be found at EliteBartendingandStaffing.com. The holidays are a busy time for everyone, with company parties and family gatherings - so don't wait to schedule!

PURE POWER!

Q: What type of yoga does your studio practice?

A: Our studio practices heated power vinyasa yoga. The studio is heated to 90 degrees and 60 percent humidity. It's not only a great workout, but also a great way to keep your body flexible and to help prevent injuries.

Q: What is Pure Power Yoga's philosophy?

A: Pure Power Yoga is a way of living—both in and out of the studio. Our students leave empowered, inspired, and lit up to take on their life – and they inspire others.

Q: How long have you practiced yoga?

A: I've practiced yoga for 17 years. My brother took me to my first class when I was 17 years old and I loved it from the start.

Q: What started you on your journey to becoming an instructor and opening your own studio?

A: When I graduated college in 2010, I opened a personal training business. I eventually started doing

bootcamps at 5:30 in the mornings at a local park. On the days where everyone was really sore and in need of recovery, we would do yoga and everbody loved it. I decided to go to Arizona to obtain my yoga instructors certification from Baron Baptiste. I worked at several studios when I returned home, but always knew that I wanted to open my own in the Robinson area. When the space became available in Robinson, I decided to make the move to open Pure Power Yoga.

Q: With the busy holiday season upon us, many people can feel stressed and burned out.

Do you have a personal routine that gets you through the busy times?

A: I personally practice yoga every day, either at home or in studio. Whether it is a rigorous 60 minutes, or just 15 minutes of yin poses and deep breathing, I find that a daily practice helps keep me feeling great, both physically and mentally. When the pandemic hit, I decided to start an online channel to help people

Interview by Ashley Elle

stay active and to have an outlet to be able to escape all of the stress and anxiety of the situation. I only planned on recording videos for a few weeks during the lockdown, but so many people enjoyed it that there I now have an online library of over 170 different videos on Vimeo. The videos are perfect for anyone looking to add some movement to their routine during the holiday season – and I offer everyone their first 30 days free by using the code "PracticeAtOM" at checkout.

Q: What advice would you give to someone interested in starting yoga?

A: My advice for someone interested in starting yoga would be to just pick a day and get started, whether it's in studio or online. All the time I hear people say, "I'm not flexible enough to do yoga" and I tell them, "that is exactly the point!" If you need more flexibility, strength, or even inner peace, yoga helps with all of that. I remind new yogis that everyone was a beginner at some point. I also always tell beginners to get a spot in the back of the room so that they can learn by watching the people in front of them.

Q: What can someone expect from their first

class?

A: Our staff and yoga community at the studio are super friendly and accommodating to newcomers. You will definitely feel welcome when you walk through our studio doors. I tell newcomers to wear comfortable clothing, hydrate well, and never hesitate to ask questions because we are always happy to help.

Q: Who can benefit from yoga?

A: I believe that everyone can benefit from practicing yoga. Yoga is a holistic approach towards health and well-being which makes it so much more than just a

workout. Yoga connects the body with thought processes, leaving the practitioner stronger both physically and mentally.

Q: What's next for Pure Power Yoga?

A: We are always offering new things at the studio. We have several workshops on the horizon, including arm balancing and a yinrestorative workshop. We lead several retreats per year, both locally and internationally. Our international retreat is in Tulum, Mexico in February 2023, and we have a local retreat to Stonewall Resort in West Virginia every fall. We are also working on launching our teacher training program so that we can certify instructors of our own.

Pure Power Yoga Studio is located at 4898 Campbell's Run Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15205.

HOW TO

THE HOLIDAYSSurvive

Let’s talk about how we can spread and share the holiday spirit without potentially spreading and sharing the cold, flu, and other viruses to our friends and family. As they old saying goes, an ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure.

A strong immune system begins by simply adopting a healthier lifestyle. Your immune system functions better and operates at a higher level when it’s protected from environmental attacks and strengthened by healthy-living tactics. One of the best ways to fight back against any virus is by building and supporting a strong immune system. Read on for tips to keep yourself in tip-top shape.

| 59 December 2022 | theCITYSCENE

HAVE SWEET DREAMS

When you aren’t sleeping well, your immune system could be weakening. In fact, when you sleep, your immune system releases proteins called cytokines. There are specific cytokines that need to increase when you have an infection and the lack of quality sleep may decrease production of these protective cytokines. In addition, infectionfighting antibodies are diminished during periods when you don't get enough sleep, leaving your body weak and defenseless. Increase sleep – increase your immune system.

MOVE & SHAKE

You don’t have to be a professional bodybuilder or fitness fanatic to keep yourself in shape. Walking, yoga, weight training, and cardiovascular exercises are all great ways to build the immune system, especially during cold months when you may be less active. Place an emphasis on living an active lifestyle, increasing energy, decreasing stress, and ultimately building a strong immune system.

HEY, SUGAR, ITS TIME WE TOOK A BREAK.

She may be sweet but tell her goodbye. Some studies have shown sugar intake compromises your immune system. When your immune system is compromised, you are more likely to get sick. If you eat too many foods and drink too many beverages that are high in sugar or refined carbohydrates, you may be reducing your body's ability to ward off disease.

STOP STRESSING

Stress is a predator on your health. Frequent stress can greatly reduce the body’s ability to fight off germs. Even minor daily stressors can weaken the immune system. Stress is a part of everyday life, but with certain adjustments, you can reduce stress and support yourself in the fight against illness. Get steady sleep, have an organized schedule, set boundaries with family, friends, and co-workers, argue less, and love more.

DRINK MORE WATER

Wake up and drink water. Drink coffee if you must then drink more water. Water is a key component of lymphatic fluid. Lymphatic fluid, which travels through a separate system of vessels, contains specialized white blood cells, called lymphocytes, that help the body fight infection. Lymphatic fluid will help remove waste, toxins, and other impurities from your body.

DROP IT LIKE A BAD HABIT

Smoking and drinking excessively are bad habits. If you smoke, stop immediately. If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation. Abusing alcohol can suppress your immune system, making you more vulnerable to infections, bacteria, and viruses. The immune system is complex and made of many cells and proteins that recognize infections and attack them. Often, the immune system takes time to recognize and respond to an infection when it’s soaked in alcohol.

Win It All At The Mall!

Give the Gift of Natural Self Care

It's important to give others (and yourself!) the gift of self care all year round, but particularly during the hectic winter months. Local business Bombash & Earley helps prevent you from pouring from an empty cup this season.

Founded by Danielle and Tim Bombash in 2015, Bombash & Earley makes and sells all-natural skin care products, such as lip balms, hand sanitizers, bath bombs, soaps, and moisturizers. Utilizing his knowledge of essential oils, Tim began creating the products in their basement and the couple sold them at farmer’s markets on the weekends. The products quickly developed a following and the Bombashes expanded to their current showroom on East McMurray Road.

Bombash & Earley’s promise to its customers is minimal ingredients, maximum results. All products use 100% plant-based ingredients and are handmade, cruelty- and preservative-free, sustainable, and most importantly, effective. All formulations go through rigorous trials to ensure they provide the desired results. Bombash & Earley also produces a line of CBD products to help promote overall wellness.

Bombash & Earley creates seasonal products and will have a full line for the holidays. Holiday favorite scents include candy cane, peppermint swizzle stick, sugar plum, frost-covered pine, pomegranate, brandy and berries, spearmint vanilla, sparkling ginger, and many more. The

62 | theCITYSCENE | Health + Wellness

products make great stocking stuffers for adults and kids – they make a special line for kids including bath bombs with toys inside. One of the favorite products for kids is the Superhero Bomb. The themed bath bomb has a surprise superhero or villain hiding inside. Once the bathwater has stopped fizzing, the special surprise is released. It’s an easy way to make bath time fun for kids.

In December, the showroom will host several “Santa’s Secret Shop” days, special days when kids can come in and shop for their parents. “As parents ourselves, we know it can be tough for kids to shop for their parents, friends, and other loved ones,” says Danielle Bombash. “We host Santa’s Secret Shop during the holidays so we can help kids pick out the right gifts for everyone on their list. Follow our Facebook page for the dates in 2022.”

Understanding the impact scents can have on mood, Bombash & Earley developed Mood-Enhancing Blends earlier this year, each with its own focus: Energize for vitality, energy, and motivation; Happy to increase blissful feelings, dreaminess, and inspiration; Balance to promote rejuvenation, mental focus, and stability; Calm for benefits including relaxation, comfort, and stress; and Uplift to provide invigoration, stimulation, and conscious unclenching. Pair these mood-boosting products with yoga poses to help achieve your desired mental benefits.

“When we launched the Mood-Enhancing Blends, we decided to partner with local business Lakeview Yoga Studio on a Let’s Get Moody mini-series on Facebook,” Danielle shares. “The series highlighted a different mental benefit and paired our MoodEnhancing Blends with a yoga pose to help achieve the desired effect. We enjoy partnering with other local small businesses and organizations to help support our community and customers.”

Feeling grateful for the support they received from the community, they knew they wanted to give back.

“A primary focus of Bombash & Earley is wellness and teaching people about how to use natural, fun, and effective products in their everyday lives,” says Danielle. “We realized that we could use our platform and our products to also care for and support our community.”

The company works with businesses, individuals, and nonprofits to create custom scents and products for their events and gifts. The custom products make great client or employee gifts during the holidays. Bombash & Earley decided to take their customized

products a step further by working with local causes and nonprofits to develop unique products for fundraising. Bombash & Earley sells the custom products on behalf of the charities, donating all proceeds from the custom products, as well as a percentage of all product sales on designated days.

“Thanks to Facebook and Instagram, Bombash & Earley has cultivated a large regional and national following,” Danielle remarks. "We’ve been able to leverage our following on these platforms to raise more funds for the causes we support and raise awareness. Facebook Groups, such as the South Hills Moms group, have been especially important to spreading the word about our company and the causes we support.”

In 2021, Bombash & Earley partnered with 412Thrive, which helps support breast cancer patients, to create their special product line, Sunflower Soul. The company worked with the Boys and Girls Club of Western Pennsylvania to create custom products for their Relax & Rise fundraiser. And they also supported the effort to locate missing person Kelsie Schelling.

Check out all of Bombash & Earley’s products at their showroom or on their website. You just might find some unique holiday gifts and check off everyone on your list.

Bombash & Earley is located at 628 East McMurray Road and can be found on Facebook (@bombashandearley), Instagram (@bombashbotanical), and online at bombashearley.com.
