Transforming Pain into Power

by Jennifer Grey Meet Aubrey Worek, local TV Fitness Expert and owner of FitnessEnvi and Aubrey Worek Fitness, LLC. At the age of 43, she is a dynamic force living her purpose by coaching busy women everywhere to transform their lives.

As a young girl, Aubrey aspired to be a professional dancer and wanted to someday be on Broadway. Her parents enrolled her in dance at a young age, where she fell in love with the performing arts. Growing up in front of the mirror, however, became both a blessing and curse – part of which she says led to her self-destructive behavior of constant comparison and never feeling “good enough.”

“I loved to dance. I wanted to be a ballerina since the age of 5. I remember being in my bedroom as a kid and dancing to classical music, pretending I was on stage. Life as a dancer comes with a price. I was constantly striving for perfection, and along with that unrealistic expectation came my obsession over my physical appearance.

At the age of 12, I distinctly remember giving myself an eating disorder. I became secretive with my eating patterns. I knew I needed to be thinner in order to fit the ballerina mold. So, I would eat and purge. I had no idea what type of damage I was causing both my physical body and my mental health.

This behavior turned into a vicious cycle that led me to 15 painful years of battling anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder. I was just like a drug addict, but since food was my drug of choice, it became nearly impossible to escape from it."

Worek's parents were unaware of how much pain she was in at the time

because she was able to hide it from them and from the rest of the world fairly well. At one point, she was less than 100 pounds; but she says her ultimate rock bottom came when I slipped into a deep depression and couldn’t manage her weight any longer.

Completely giving into the monster she created, Worek began gaining weight rapidly. "I binged almost every day. I spent hours a day trying to burn-off my binge with running. Purging no longer worked as my “weight-loss tool.” The person I saw in the mirror was damaged and she needed to get help."

It was around this time she graduated from Slippery Rock University with a degree in Exercise Science (with minors in Dance and Gerontology). "I felt like a complete imposter. Here I was, a fitness professional who could not control her relationship with food and who was blatantly over-weight. To the outsider looking in, I didn’t look the part, and quite frankly I didn’t feel the part either."

Worek was helping other people lose weight and feel great; meanwhile she was carrying a shameful secret. She did not seek help, but help found her.

Befriending a compassionate retired physical education teacher turned personal trainer would change her life. "He graciously worked with me to help me heal. It was because of his belief in me that I was able to do so. He helped me change my behavior through copious amounts of self-help work. He was determined to help me thrive and coached me to enter my very first fitness and bikini competition. He knew I had to make peace with what I saw in the mirror and truly love myself as myself." So, at the age of 27, Worek stopped purging.

She became a certified nutrition specialist and embarked on creating programs for women to help them heal from food addictions and food anxiety. Worek turned her trauma into triumph and stepped into the role she was meant to have. "I was not meant to be a prima ballerina. I was meant to be a wellness coach who helps women thrive by achieving the body, mind, and spirit they deserve. Today I work with women ranging from 20 to 50+. I help them achieve things they never thought would be possible. And I do this all through fitness, nutrition, and mindset coaching."

It’s important to understand that at first, Worek was extremely reluctant to share the story of her past. Experiencing embarrassment and shame, she struggled with feeling like she actively chose her hardships. She notes that "just like any person who has battled addiction, at some point you become a slave to the behavior and you start to feel as if there is no way out. It was reaching this point in my life that drove me to stop at nothing until my wounds became scars and I permanently changed."

"This was why I had to become an expert in everything that had to do with self-help, behavior change, brain rewiring, food, hormones, and gut health. I focused primarily on how I could help people like me heal faster and more effectively. Now, I can proudly say I am blessed with the opportunity to work with women who are in a stage of readiness to change and who want to leave their old identity behind. I get to breathe belief into women and teach them new ways to grow and evolve.

It has been outstanding to witness so many transformations unfold. I know this is what I am meant to be doing. I teach women how to reframe their thinking, or what I like to call, 'Flipping your script.' Together we let go of control and learn how to be in charge – essentially releasing the victim role and stepping into the victor role."

Her journey into the fitness world became even more prominent when she took on the role of TV Fitness Expert for KDKA Channel 2 on the Pittsburgh Today Live Morning Show (PTL).

Landing this spot on TV was not just handed to her, Worek noted. “I sent out many press releases and pitches to our local news channels because I saw a need for Pittsburgh to have the fitness community represented, and more importantly to help educate others on how to create healthy habits through very simple fitness principles. Finally I got in front of the producer of PTL and was able to prove myself on camera. I have been working with the show since 2016 and feel extremely fortunate to share my knowledge and passion for behavior change with a broader audience in order to encourage individuals to lead less sedentary lives.”

One of Worek's most significant achievements was the founding of Wellness Solutions at Work (WSW), her first corporate wellness company. In an era where employee well-being was increasingly recognized as essential for business success, Worek's venture was perfectly aligned with the times. “I didn't go to school for business. I had very little experience outside of my post-grad years working as a trainer. I was good at selling myself because I knew that I would be able to do whatever necessary to help my clients at the time succeed. In 2007, I had an opportunity to go big on some corporate wellness contracts that were up for grabs with Westinghouse Electric Company.

This was a chance of a lifetime." She researched absolutely everything she could in order to start her own company and with a former college friend turned business partner, she won 3 contracts with Westinghouse, and WSW was born.

The company provided tailored wellness programs for large corporations and Worek's staff helped employees incorporate healthy habits into their daily routines that focused on driving company healthcare costs down. She grew WSW for over 3 years, however she had a bit of a dramatic dissolution to the organization in 2011. "Sometimes in business it can get stereotypically cut-throat. In one day, I had my entire company dismantled. It was a hard blow for me to say the least, so I used the following year to reinvent myself as well as start a new business."

And that's how Worek's current studio, FitnessEnvi, came into existence. "I never thought I’d open a boutique dance and fitness studio. But I needed to pivot fast once WSW dissolved. Money I had saved for emergency use became my start-up fund for FitnessEnvi. I told myself I’d open a pole dance studio for women and give it 3 years before moving on. Well, 3 years has become 13! I have kept this business going because it has evolved with the times. I realized the importance of still having live, in-person experiences thanks to the ‘2020 experience.’" Also in 2020, Worek started an online coaching business for women. It’s because of her customers that she keeps the brick-and-mortar location open. Worek confides, "I have a lot of 20-year-olds now at my studio. They keep me young! They have even inspired me to compete in pole dancing – something I always wanted to do, but

never pulled the trigger until this time. FitnessEnvi has become a very special place for me and my members. We have become a fitness and dance family that uses the studio as a haven of positivity. I have made it the culture of my studio to leave gossip and negative self-talk outside. I am very serious about that. You can feel your energy shift as soon as you walk in. FitnessEnvi is a container that promotes growth and empowerment. And for those reasons, I couldn’t be more grateful to have had WSW dismantled.”

While Worek is known for her expertise in fitness and wellness, she is also celebrated for her charitable endeavors. In 2021, she won the Dancing with the Celebrities charity event organized by Animal Friends of Westmoreland. Most recently she organized a charity event at Sobel’s Obscure Brewery to benefit a dear friend of hers who is battling cancer. Along with the valiant efforts of local businesses, friends, and family, they raised over $10,000 to benefit Gary Ed III, a Pittsburgh native.

Worek's list of accomplishments wouldn't be complete without mentioning her outstanding achievement as the 2015 Ms. Fitness America Champion. She says this was a goal of hers for an eight year time period. She was set on winning this international competition before having a child. “I am not a competitive person by nature. I chose to compete in sports that require a stage because I am a performer at my core. I love the stage; however, there are very few things as an adult that can give us platforms to fulfill an internal desire like this. I made Fitness America my goal because it required me to use my dance background and public speaking background. The year I won this show represented all those who supported me along the way. I’ll never forget that magical moment!”

Most recently Worek got back into the sport of competitive fitness; this time in the bikini division of natural bodybuilding.

She started from scratch essentially as the sport has evolved to being even more challenging than she had once experienced.

Just last year she earned her second “pro card” by placing first in an OCB Bikini show. This ranking pushed her to compete in the largest natural bodybuilding/bikini show with the OCB: The Yorton Championships. On September 9th , 2023 she placed second in her segment at the Yorton in Charlotte, North Carolina, qualifying her to compete again next year in hopes to achieve the winning title.

“Every one of us has a purpose. We are all on a path of evolution and reinvention. I have become more aware of how precious it is to ALLOW life to happen for me. Every day I ask myself this question: ‘Aubrey, how is this experience happening FOR you instead of against you?’ Sometimes we feel like we are not getting anywhere – like a hamster in a wheel. Yet if you look at life from a birds-eye-view the wheel is really a spiral staircase and we are ascending it. I believe we have all of the resources available for us to succeed. There is not scarcity unless it’s within your mind. Whether you want better health, wealth, relationships, or anything else, we all have access to something or someone that can support our growth. None of us are ‘there yet.’ So, the legacy I hope to give to my son is for him to accept his strengths, to practice daily self- compassion, and to recognize that we have no enemies in this life time. Some of my biggest nemeses and naysayers were the people who pushed me to grow the most.”

Aesthetic Medicine:

More than Face Value

When the phrase “cosmetic surgery” comes to mind, many people have images in their heads of frozen faces, oversized lips and puffy cheeks. Over a decade ago, there may have been some partial truth to this imagery, as healthcare providers were new to learning the art of aesthetic medicine.

But as we enter 2024, we are in a new era, where “aesthetic medicine” offers subtle tweaks that are indiscernible but can help rejuvenate the face in a way that appears completely naturallooking.

Aesthetic medicine includes nonsurgical and minimally invasive procedures aimed at enhancing a person’s appearance. This can include neuromodulator treatments (i.e., Botox and Dysport), dermal fillers, laser treatments, and chemical peels, among other procedures. I began working in the cosmetic field long before “aesthetic medicine” was even considered a subspecialty. I watched the stigma surrounding cosmetic treatments slowly shift in recent years towards more transparency and less judgement towards others who chose to do it. The subject of cosmetic surgery, once a hushed topic confined to the realms of celebrities, has become a more widely accepted means of practicing selfcare through the practice of aesthetic medicine.

Along with this shift in perception, there is now increased demand for results that appear natural and balanced with one’s individual unique features. Long gone are the days of a 60 year old attempting to turn back the clock 30 years and erase all signs of aging. Rather, cosmetic surgery has become a nuanced profession where medicine meets art, and skilled providers have a vast 52 |

understanding of facial anatomy and the science behind the aging process. In the right hands, this knowledge can be applied to each individual patient to give them a rejuvenated version of themself without dramatically altering their appearance. As I always tell my patients - I can take 5-10 years off of your face, but striving for anything beyond that runs the risk of looking unnatural. My advice? If someone tells you they can make you look 30 years younger, run the other way.

The aesthetics industry has grown exponentially in recent years, and not all providers practice with this mentality in mind. The “more is more” philosophy is alive and well in some locums of the industry, despite the shift in demand for more subtle results. This begs the question: In a world where med spas are popping up on every street corner, how does a novice navigate the landscape of cosmetic surgery to find the right provider and the appropriate treatments?

The aesthetics industry and the beauty industry (a sector of business that includes hair styling, manicures and spa treatments, and others) share some overlap in that both industries are focused on enhancing a person’s appearance. Many would argue that a lip filler appointment is no different than an appointment for hair color or a manicure, as it is a means of making aesthetic changes in order to feel better about oneself. These practices all contribute to a person’s overall well-being and confidence, and both industries are rooted in wellness and self-care trends. However, while the aesthetics industry and the beauty industry share some overlap, they are not synonymous with one another.

At the end of the day, aesthetics is still the practice of medicine and medical procedures where safety and quality must be the top priority of your provider.

As with most professions, experience is a key factor in the proficiency of an aesthetic provider. Each state requires specific licensing for who can perform certain cosmetic procedures.

However, beyond this, there aren’t many checks and balances for the type of training that a healthcare provider must undergo before starting to treat patients. Because of this, I recommend that you do your research on the practice to determine their proficiency and expertise in any given procedure.

One of the most difficult things I encounter as an aesthetic provider is convincing a new patient that they won’t look overdone. I believe this is in large part due to the sector of our industry who are more focused on their bottom dollar than patient outcomes. They do not say “no” to a patient whose lips are already full enough, or they lack the requisite experience to recognize that more is not more in all cases.

I would caution the layperson to not take aesthetic procedures at face value. Strive to research and find an experienced provider just as you would if you were looking for a cardiologist, or optometrist. Afterall, you can think of the field of aesthetic medicine as a place where self-care meets healthcare – and selecting the provider who can best address your individual goals will be critical to your results and overall experience.

Say ciao to “Dry January” and #NEXT to extreme New Years’ resolutions.

There's a growing movement quietly gaining momentum—one that embraces the concept of being "Soberish." It's not about black-and-white sobriety, but rather finding a delicate balance in a society that constantly tempts us with excess.If you’re seeking a mindful and intentional approach to living in a world that can sometimes feel like a blurry cocktail of choices, read on.

Let’s be real: we all have the best of intentions for our health, wealth, and relationships. We want to exercise more, make more money, and be happy within ourselves. It’s wired in us to have desires to improve our lives. In the words of Tony Robbins, “Progress equals happiness.” And I couldn’t agree more. In regards to cutting back on alcohol consumption, sometimes going cold turkey isn't the way, and any progress is a positive step. So, let’s dive into the details of designing a realistic plan for 2024.

Define Your Own Balance Everyone’s version of a balanced life is different, so it's importnat to think about what that looks like for you. My best advice is to try something I've implemented to my own morning routine in order to establish focus for my day. Every morning I ask myself three important questions that give me a greater success rate at thriving and establishing balance. I do this in order to rewire my brain and in hopes to kill-off my old, primitive way of thinking that would lead me down a negative spiral. My questions are: How can I make my son laugh today?

How can I show my husband how much I appreciate him today?

How can I live today with more self-compassion?

This strategy was something I implemented after experiencing an immersive event called, “Date with Destiny.” These specific questions have been a game changer for me because in the past I used to live dayby-day feeling like I was never enough. I was constantly letting myself down because I was comparing myself to the people who I viewed as more successful than me. I have a journal that I write in briefly every morning and I write these questions out nearly every day.

This ritual has grounded me and prevents me from going to extremes when I am most vulnerable or stressed.

The reason this habit is so effective is because we often use our external environment to numb ourselves. When embarking on a soberish journey of balance when it comes to alcohol, this small habit of asking yourself your own important questions every morning can help you focus on your goals.

Hire a Coach Embracing a soberish lifestyle can be a transformative journey, and a personal coach can play a pivotal role in facilitating this change.

Coaches specialize in creating a safe and supportive environment where individuals can explore their relationship with alcohol without judgment. They provide a unique space for self-reflection and discovery, enabling clients to identify their motivations for drinking and the triggers that lead to excessive consumption. This process of selfawareness is critical as it helps individuals understand the underlying reasons behind their drinking habits and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

Moreover, personal coaches are adept at skill-building, which is essential for sustaining a soberish lifestyle. They equip clients with practical tools and techniques for managing cravings, resisting peer pressure, and handling social situations where alcohol is present. This skill set includes learning how to assertively say no to a drink, finding pleasure in non-alcoholic beverages, and understanding how to maintain a sense of belonging in social groups while staying true to one's soberish goals. By enhancing these skills, coaches empower individuals to make conscious, confident choices about their alcohol consumption in various settings.

Lastly, a personal coach can provide ongoing support and guidance as individuals navigate the ups and downs of a new normal. This journey is not linear, and challenges such as relapses or heightened social pressures can arise. A coach is there to offer encouragement, help reassess and adjust goals as needed, and provide strategies to overcome setbacks.

This ongoing support is invaluable in fostering resilience and ensuring that the soberish lifestyle is sustainable in the long term. Through their expertise, empathy, and unwavering support, personal coaches play an indispensable role in helping individuals achieve a balanced and fulfilling relationship with alcohol.

Identify Your Kryptonite In the journey towards embracing a soberish lifestyle, the first step is identifying your personal 'Kryptonite' – that one vice, particularly related to alcohol, that challenges your resolve and often leads to excess.

This introspective process involves confronting the reality of your drinking habits and understanding their impact on your life. Whether it's a glass of wine to unwind after a long day or social drinking that spirals out of control, recognizing these patterns is crucial.

This self-awareness allows you to pinpoint the scenarios or emotions that trigger excessive drinking, laying the foundation for a more balanced approach to alcohol consumption.

The next phase is to develop strategies for managing it effectively within a soberish framework. It could involve setting clear boundaries for yourself, such as limiting the number of drinks per occasion or designating alcohol-free days. The key here is moderation and control. By setting these limits, you are not denying yourself the pleasure of a drink but are choosing to enjoy it in a way that doesn't compromise your overall well-being or lead to regrettable excesses.

Implementing a "Soberish" lifestyle also means exploring and understanding the deeper reasons behind your drinking. Often, alcohol consumption is a response to underlying issues such as stress, anxiety, or social pressure.

By addressing these root causes, you can reduce your reliance on alcohol as a coping mechanism. This might involve adopting new stress-reduction techniques like meditation, exercise, or engaging in hobbies that bring joy and fulfillment.

In addition to internal strategies, external support systems play a vital role. This could be in the form of joining support groups, seeking therapy, or simply having honest conversations with friends and family about your goals and boundaries. These support systems serve as a reminder of your commitment to a healthier lifestyle and offer support during setbacks.

Lastly, finding balance is an ongoing journey of self-discovery and growth.

It's not about achieving perfection but about making progress towards a healthier relationship with alcohol.

There will be challenges and setbacks, but each experience provides valuable lessons and opportunities for growth.

Celebrate your successes, learn from your missteps, and continue to refine your approach. Remember, the goal of going soberish is not just to reduce alcohol consumption, but to enhance your overall quality of life, leading to a more fulfilled and balanced existence.

So let's embrace Soberish living — striking a balance that fosters growth, resilience, and a life well-lived.
