theCITYSCENE | Cuisine on the Scene When I visited Coven, I tried a few beers that I felt really represented Coven’s beer palette. Each were so unique in flavor and good until the last drop.

Swanky: 6.8% IPA, brewed with Sabro and Falconer’s Flight hops.

This IPA is among Coven’s flagship beers, and considered their “house IPA.” Rest be assuredSwanky typically is on draft more often times than not. This brew is soft, smooth, and has super subtle notes of lime and coconut. (I may or may not have bought a 4-pack to go.)

Overneath: 8% Double IPA, brewed with Sultana, Bru-1, and El Dorado hops.

Double IPAs are definitely an acquired taste for many, since they tend to be hoppier, boozier, and robust in flavor. I was a little nervous trying this double IPA at first, but to my surprise, Overneath was super drinkable and smooth! The hops used were not super overpowering, and I truly enjoyed trying this one because you can definitely taste notes of pineapple and mango. Be careful though; the 8% does creep up on you – so be sure to have some food while enjoying this tasty brew.

Coven has the perfect set up outside for food trucks to park next to the entrance. Luckily when I visited, one of my favorite food trucks was there: Blue Sparrow.

Blue Sparrow is classified as homemade “global street food.” Owner and chef Luke Cypher takes various types of street foods from around the world and adapts them into his own masterpiece creations. From Korean BBQ wraps to Ramen burgers, this food truck will want you coming back for more! My personal favorite menu item from Blue Sparrow are the bimibap bowls.

Think of a poke bowl, but with a ton of fermented veggies, rice, your choice of protein (chicken, steak, or tofu), and topped off with a “dippy” egg. While you satisfy your tastebuds with so many different flavors and spices in the bowl, you also get a super filling, healthy meal.

This quirky restaurant offers a delightful combination of bicycle-themed decor, delicious food, and a welcoming atmosphere.

As you approach the Boathouse, you'll notice bicycle enthusiasts parking their bikes outside, ready to indulge in a culinary adventure. Step inside and be greeted by the sight of bicycles hanging from the ceiling, fun artwork, and even some stained glass fixtures – setting the tone for a fun and vibrant dining experience. No matter what you're in the mood for, OTB has something to satisfy your taste buds.

As you peruse the food menu, you'll be delighted by the variety of options available. With a focus on fresh ingredients and a variety of options to suit different dietary preferences, the cafe ensures that everyone can find something to enjoy. Featuring unique themed dishes such as the Dirt Rag Delight (a juicy, perfectly-cooked burger smothered in peanut butter and topped with pickles); the Fat Bike Fish Sandwich (fresh panko-crusted fish served on Brioche bun topped with lettuce and tomato); and the Lakeside (a salmon salad featuring goat cheese, candied walnuts, and craisins), you're sure to find something to excite your taste buds.

Even the little ones are well taken care of at this familyfriendly establishment. Kids can choose from scrumptious options like the Strider (cheeseburger), the Mountain Bike (mac 'n cheese), and the Tricycle (chicken fingers).

The thoughtfully crafted kids' menu ensures that even the youngest diners have a memorable meal.

The story behind the North Park location is as intriguing as the menu itself. The owner, Michael Kotyk, an avid mountain biker, discovered the historic stone boathouse during his rides around North Park. Instantly smitten by its charm, Kotyk approached government officials in 2011 to discuss the possibility of opening a second location of his bicycle-themed restaurant there.

After a year of negotiations, a public-private partnership was established, leading to the birth of Over the Bar Bicycle Cafe at the North Park Boathouse in October 2013. The building had been underutilized for years, but Kotyk's vision breathed new life into the space. The result is a unique and inviting restaurant with picturesque views of North Park Lake.This location offers year-round outdoor dining, with fire pits and gas heaters available to keep guests warm during colder months. Additionally, umbrellas provide shade on hot summer days, ensuring that diners can enjoy their meals comfortably no matter what temperature it is.

Speaking of cooling off this season, be sure to pair your meal with a refreshing draft beer or one of their delicious specialty cocktails. Mixologist Rachel was delighted to walk us through OTB's extensive drink menu, offering suggestions and telling us about her personal favorites. The cafe takes pride in their homemade seasonal cocktails, and Rachel tells us that popular choices include the Summer Sangria (pictured above) and the Lakeside Sunrise. Those who prefer beer will be delighted by the assortment available, such as Triple Berry Tartburst from Strange Roots Experimental Ales and Smallman from Cinderlands Beer Co. If you're a wine lover, OTB offers a beautiful selection of wines, including Ruffino Prosecco, Cavit Moscato, and Bogle Chardonnay. A native of Myrtle Beach, Rachel moved to Pittsburgh after completing her marketing degree at Coastal Carolina University in 2021. She was a bartender throughout her time in college and brings her knowledge and experience to OTB's bar program. When not behind the bar, Rachel can be found poolside soaking up the sun and enjoying a cold beer. She was a delight to talk to and had a wealth of information on not only the libation selection but also the restaurant and surrounding area. Catch her hanging out at the bar and you're sure to enjoy your drink and conversation!

The Vault is Open

The best place to store coffee beans is in an old bank vault.

Absurd, yes – but it's the new reality for locals in Pitcairn with the opening of a new gathering place: The Vault Coffeehouse.

A welcoming scent of espresso stands as a gateway to delicious coffee and entertainment in the small town and it's bringing people together like never before.

With a desire to help the town and a love for coffee, inspiration struck.

“It was a no-brainer: coffeeshop.”

“I was not a coffee person. Ever.”

At least, that's what Milo Speranzo, owner and founder of Vault, will tell you. Fortunately, this soon changed when he joined the United States Air Force. After he was stationed in Colombia, South America, for an extended period of time, Speranzo was introduced to real coffee tasting. “I think it was less the taste of coffee and more the romantic aspect of it all,” he recalls. ”We would go to these small farms and drink coffee.

So I love coffee.”

In the years to come, this love of coffee would define Speranzo’s endeavors to change the world around him. During the pandemic, he decided to move back to his old stomping grounds from Washington, D.C. – and it was nothing like he remembered.

Over the past two decades or so, people had moved away from his 18 |

Coffeeshop indeed.

Speranzo’s journey, which had been fifteen plus years in the making, was finally coming to fruition. But his love for coffee alone couldn’t run espresso machines, take orders, and operate steaming wands; he needed a crew. Through the Pittsburgh grapevine of extended family and friends, Speranzo met Eibhlin McCune. Eivy, as her

friends know her, came into Vault as a manager, wrapping several years of coffee experience into a sturdy, bountiful bow.

From food sourcing to making Vault’s signature drinks (like the Dessert Deposit cold brew and The Robber latte), Eivy found many freedoms in helping build the cafe from the ground up. She was able to work with many small, local businesses like Patti’s Pasticceria and Commonplace Coffee, who were more than happy to share their stories. “It's a cool opportunity to be able to talk to other Pittsburgh small businesses to see how they’ve built themselves up – and they give good advice.

They’re great people,” Eivy says.

Community is what Vault aims to build. It brings people together in a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Speranzo, who was raised by the Pitcairn neighborhood, believes that “proactive engagement in knowing your neighbors...and group planning” is really what community is all about. At the Vault, visitors can enjoy live music on Wednesday evenings or read books from the community library.

Moreso, the community is finding friendships and connections they didn’t have access to before. “We have so many employees who lived on the same street who

never knew they lived on the same street as each other. It's very cool that we get to introduce people who have never met,” remarks Speranzo.

This summer, you can expect themed drinks to cool down and wake up on those hot, humid Pittsburgh days. Look out for the S'mores and Apple Pie lattes as well as the new Ice Cream Sandwich latte created by Vault barista, Amber.

Or, try fan favorites, like the Lavender Haze and Pistachio lattes - served hot or iced - and couple them with a freshly baked caramel toffee scone or caprese roll.

The coffeehouse is heading for a bright, local future. “Coffee is the greatest excuse,” says Speranzo. And in a town where there are no excuses, the coffeehouse has created a collaborative escape for both old and new members of the community to share and thrive in. Speranzo plans on expanding his business to other local communities and is already on the hunt for abandoned banks he could rob for another Vault Coffeehouse.

Every town needs a place where the community can come together. In Pitcairn, The Vault Coffeehouse is the space where locals are excited to visit. Friendships are formed, artists are fostered, and coffee is enjoyed: the Vault is open!

CANNABIS PHARMACISTS: A TRUSTED RESOURCE

s a patient advocate, I have offered medical cannabis support to friends, family, and quite a bit of strangers since I first came out of the cannabis closet nearly a decade ago. After speaking up about my desire to fight for patient rights to use medical cannabis as medicine, it opened many doors to meet a wide range of Pennsylvanians suffering from many treatment resistant conditions that feel that they have run out of ways to feel well.

A worthy aspect of the PA Medical Marijuana Program (or MMJ for short) is that the Department of Health requires all patents to see a licensed pharmacist before making their first dispensary purchase. In 34 |

If a dispensary has more than one location, a physician or pharmacist must be on site at one, but the other(s) could have a physician’s assistant, or certified registered nurse practitioner.

I feel that there is no one more qualified than a pharmacist to help patients understand cannabis, which strains work best for them, and how their pharmaceuticals could potentially interact (or how cannabis can help with drug’s side effects).

Each pharmacist is required by the DOH to complete a comprehensive 4-hour training program on cannabinoid pharmacology.

Terpenes are naturally occurring compounds in plants, and this explains how cannabis gets its pungent aroma and contributes to its flavor. More importantly, terpenes found in MMJ are listed right on the packaging of every PA product, giving insights into which strain can give you the relief that you are looking for.

Every person has a unique endocannabinoid system. This means that cannabis will affect each of us a bit differently. When looking for relief from a certain medical condition, finding the best strain takes time, and your local cannabis pharmacist can help.

This month, I interviewed Dr. Lauren Vrabel, a cannabis pharmacist that works for a medical marijuana dispensary by day and is also a Scientific Advisor for The Cannigma, a consumer-facing media platform that delivers evidence-based and expert-backed information about cannabis. She has spent time at the PA Senate, advocating for better cannabis DUI laws, as well as improvements for the medical program. She’ll soon be guest lecturing at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy as well.

I asked Dr. Vrabel what led her to work in the cannabis industry, and she explained that when she worked as a retail pharmacist, she was dealing with a wide range of patients daily. After being asked by a patient what she knew about

How can we inspire our medical professionals locally to care to learn about cannabis and the endocannabinoid system when it’s not taught in medical school? My hope is that leaders like Dr. Vrabel and the advocacy work that she is doing with the State will open the minds of not only our medical community but of our legislatures.

Set refers to one’s mindset (thoughts, moods, expectations) and setting is the physical and social environment for the experience.

These conditions affect a patient's reaction to the plant and can make

Cigar in the

CITY

The first in our series reviewing Pittsburgh's cigar bar scene, we're clearing the smoke on the smoldering hotspots in the area – starting with BLEND Bar Pittsburgh.

As a cigar enthusiast, I've come to appreciate the art of cigar smoking. For many, it's not just about the smoke, but the entire experience. Pittsburgh has long been a cigar city, and not just for the “jacket” smoker. There are many classic, old-school cigar bars in and around the city, and more recently, a few upscale joints have opened their doors. There's never any trouble finding a spot to enjoy great cigar in the city.

The real challenge comes from the question “with whom?"

Enjoying a great smoke alone is definitely a thing itself, but for the sake of the story I needed someone to share it with. Enter my buddy Steve, a lifelong friend and co-host with me of The Sports Porch Podcast in Pittsburgh, who enjoys not only a good cigar, but also a great bourbon. A match made in heaven and perfect companion to join me at BLEND Bar in Pittsburgh.

Before we talk about our experience, though, let’s catch up on a few things about cigars that we find… well…important. Things like: what makes a good cigar in the first place?

The quality of a cigar is determined

by a variety of factors, including the tobacco blend, the way it's rolled, and the aging process.

A good cigar should have a smooth draw, an even burn, and a balance of flavors. The flavor profile can vary greatly from cigar to cigar, with some being quite mild and others being more

complex. Ultimately, the best cigar is one that you enjoy smoking.

When selecting a cigar, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, consider the occasion. Are you smoking the cigar to celebrate a special event or simply relaxing after a long day? This can help you determine the type of cigar you want to smoke. Next, consider the size and shape of the cigar. Larger cigars

generally have a longer smoking time, while smaller cigars are more portable.

Finally, consider the flavor profile of the cigar. Do you prefer a mild, smooth smoke, or something more complex and full-bodied?

Once you've selected your cigar, it's time to prepare it for smoking. Start by cutting the cap off the cigar using a cigar cutter. Be sure to cut just enough to expose the tobacco, but not too much that the cigar unravels. Next, light the cigar using a butane lighter or matches. Hold the cigar at a 45-degree angle and rotate it as you light it to ensure an even burn. Be sure to take your time when lighting the cigar, as rushing can cause uneven burning and affect the flavor.

Now that your cigar is lit, it's time to enjoy it. Start by taking a few slow, steady puffs to get the cigar going.

From there, take your time and savor the flavor. Don't inhale the smoke, but instead let it sit in your mouth for a few seconds before exhaling.This allows you to fully experience the flavors of the cigar. As you smoke, be sure to rotate the cigar every few puffs to ensure an | 39

theCITYSCENE | PGH Lifestyle even burn. Finally, when you're finished smoking, gently set the cigar down in an ashtray and let it go out on its own.

One of the joys of cigar smoking is pairing it with food and drinks. When selecting a pairing, consider the flavor profile of the cigar. For example, a full-bodied cigar pairs well with a bold red wine or a dark beer, while a milder cigar pairs well with a light beer or white wine. Additionally, consider the flavors of the food you're pairing with the cigar. For example, a steak pairs well with a full-bodied cigar, while a seafood dish pairs well with a milder cigar.

Another thing to note is that cigar smoking has its own set of etiquette and social norms. When smoking in public, be sure to ask for permission before lighting up. Additionally, be mindful of others around you and avoid blowing smoke in their direction. When smoking indoors, be sure to use an ashtray and avoid smoking in areas where it's prohibited.

Finally, when smoking with others, be sure to share your cigars and engage in conversation.

One exceptional place that embodies the refined luxury of cigar smoking is BLEND Bar Pittsburgh. The BLEND lounge is situated in the historic Koppers Building, an iconic structure that has been preserved and honored in the city. Located on the corner of Seventh Avenue and William Penn Place in downtown Pittsburgh, every detail of the lounge pays tribute to the grandeur of the building, including its RB Mellon Mansion Marble, Art Deco lighting, Moe Bridges wall sconces, steel fence panel, rare baseball scoreboard, and a steel beam from the original Carnegie Steel Company in Homestead.

During the day, BLEND provides a comfortable and sophisticated atmosphere for meetings or entertaining clients.

In the evening, it is a trendy spot for socializing with old friends and making new ones. The interior is designed with a casual elegance, comprised of leather seating, an onyx bar, custom lighting, and elegant decor.

As for air quality, Steve noticed that there was hardly any residual smoke lingering in the air. AAON AIRE Energy Recovery Systems are used to ensure the best customer experience. This system provides precision humidity control and quality air by changing all of the air six times an hour. This is done in an environmentally conscious way by allowing for larger amounts of fresh air to enter the space.

Upon entering BLEND, Steve and I were met by Liz, one of the friendly and welcoming staff, and were then escorted to the humidor located behind the bar. Liz was incredibly knowledgeable about all of the cigar brands they offer, from leaf to ring size, smoke quality, and flavor. As a bonus for Steve, she had a wealth of information on bourbons they offer as well (and there are too many to count). Liz made sure that we understood the cigar selections and bourbon choices and certainly helped point us in the right direction.

When it comes to enjoying a good cigar in the city with a fine spirit, it’s infinitely helpful to have someone like Liz in the establishment.

Steve selected the Davidoff Aniversario series as our smoke for the afternoon, mentioning that he “chose the Davidoff Aniversario because it’s always featured as the top selection of the Davidoff brand. I found the Aniversario mild yet flavorful enough to bring out the tobacco notes in the filler." After making our selection, we learned that in 2015, BLEND Bar began a partnership with Davidoff Geneva USA, and is currently the first and only Davidofflicensed cigar lounge in the world.

While I’m relatively new to the bourbon/whiskey scene, I do know the basics. The spirits menu has excellent variety and pricing to accommodate all needs, including tequila and wine. The menu also uses an asterisk to set aside Pennsylvania distilled whiskey and bourbons. Upon chatting more with Liz, I chose a PA brand – the Stoll & Wolfe Rye – which was, in my opinion, the perfect pairing with my Davidoff. The rye had an immediate tingle on the tip of my tongue. It had an excellent balance between sweet and heat with a very low,

The rye stayed balanced throughout the duration of the drink, and I felt like the Stoll & Wolfe brought out more flavor in my cigar. Definitely don’t be afraid to try a Pennsylvania bourbon.

If you're someone who'd prefer a cup of joe with your smoke instead of an alcoholic beverage BLEND Bar has you covered there as well. I personally am not a coffee drinker, but BLEND offers a great French Press Ethiopian Blend Coffee that even a non-java enthusiast such as myself could enjoy.

It just so happened that it also paired very well with the Davidoff Aniversario. The rich flavor of the coffee blended marvelously with the medium body taste of the smoke. Truly a great pairing! If this is more your speed, be sure to ask a staff member for their personal pairing recommendations.

Overall, our visit to BLEND was an enjoyable and satisying experience. The atmosphere was calm and pleasant and patrons wandered in and out throughout the day. We arrived around 2:30 in the afternoon to a quiet sanctuary of relaxation and, after a second round of cigars and drinks, we left around 7:00 from an upscale lounge bustling with avid cigar smokers from the local hotels, shows, and restaurants. The energy was certainly starting to pick up, and I'm looking forward to my next trip to BLEND to revel in its distinct late-evening ambiance.

In the heart of Pittsburgh, a small gym with a big impact is making waves in the world of boxing. The Southside Boxing Club, co-founded by combat sports instructor Matt Leyshock and Pittsburgh city fire fighter Sammy “The Butcher” Suska, has rapidly become a prominent institution on the Pittsburgh boxing scene. Born out of Leyshock’s passion for the sport and Suska’s dedication to his city, the two men had a desire to provide a safe and supportive environment for aspiring boxers.

Suska, a certified personal trainer with over 15,000 hours of personal training expertise, has spent thousands of hours in boxing gyms and sparred well over 1,000 rounds. He is also a veteran of over 40 fights including eight professional bouts and 35 amateur bouts. Suska has sparred with some of the best fighters in the area and the consensus best in the world – such as Roy Jones, Jr. and Steve Cunningham, among others. Suska is also a two-time Western PA Golden Glove Champion, wining the light heavyweight sub-novice in 2006 and open middleweight in 2009.

Having been in the game since the mid-90s, Leyshock has trained with basically anybody who's anybody in the greater Pittsburgh area. A former promoter, mixed martial artist and boxer with a 15-year wrestling background, along with 8 years of submission wrestling, he has something for everyone. Leyshock has trained multiple professional athletes in both mixed martial arts and professional boxing such as current bellator star Cody Law, undefeated professional Gregg Rudolph, internet celebrity Ed Latimore, and numerous others. Matt has a unique position in the sport with not only his superior understanding of the technical aspect, but also the business side coming from his promoter background with over thirty professional fights promoted regionally.

Suska and Leyshock’s club has quickly gained recognition for its dedication to developing fighters from various age groups and skill levels and has become a safe haven for individuals seeking more than just physical training. With a unique origin story and a commitment to inclusivity and mentorship, The Southside Boxing Club transcends traditional boxing establishments.

The journey began in 2012 when Leyshock started training people at Armstrong Park on 12th Street. Initially, it was a lighthearted endeavor, marked by a joking hashtag on Instagram: #thesouthsideboxingclub. He would spend his mornings training people for a modest fee at the park, with clients shuffling in and out over several hours. Little did he know that this casual start would pave the way for something much greater.

One of the individuals Leyshock trained at the park was Nikki Kemp, who eventually became the coordinator for The Southside Boxing Club as it grew. She now runs the daily operations and handles the majority of

theCITYSCENE | Focus on Fitness day-to-day responsibilities. Leyshock jokes that the business is "more her gym than mine," recognizing Nikki's immense contributions to its success.

Leyshock's personal life is also intertwined with the development of the gym. It was at the park where he met his wife, forming a bond that supported his dedication to his passion. While working at a few of the free local gyms and training at the park, Leyshock also managed a logistics company that owned a several trucks and vans. He opened a garage for vehicle maintenance, but circumstances would soon change not only that space but his life.

In 2017, one of the free gyms Leyshock worked at closed, leaving him with clients who had nowhere to go. Winter had set in, rendering the park an impractical option. In a stroke of ingenuity, Leyshock decided to use part of the garage just to hold pads for people. He soon built a small hole-in-the-wall ring so clients had more space to train. He had transformed the maintenance garage into a makeshift gym.

He divided the space, dedicating one side to brakes and oil changes and the other side to boxing, creating a truly unique atmosphere in which to train.

Eventually the gym started taking over the space and little by little, it was more gym than garage. Leyshock decided to let go of the logistics business, sell all of the equipment, and fully commit to making The Southside Boxing Club what it is today.

Leyshock's unconventional approach to promotion also played a significant role in shaping the gym's identity. In the beginning, he deliberately told people “No" when they expressed interest in joining, creating an air of exclusivity. This strategy allowed him to curate a client base that aligned with his vision and values. The absence of signage and no listed address also added an element of mystery to the gym in its early days.

Because of these unconventional tactics, The Southside Boxing Club has grown from two clients to hundreds over the years.

He acknowledges that combat sports can have the reputation of attracting “creeps,” but at The Southside Boxing Club, that’s never been a problem due to the culture he and his staff has cultivated. “We don’t have to shout from the rooftops that we don’t allow inappropriate behavior; it’s just simply not tolerated. It’s not part of our culture.” Because of this, the gym has garnered a large female customer base, providing a safe and encouraging environment while holding true to the definition of a traditional boxing club. What began as a social club has transformed into a full-fledged gym, fostering a sense of community.

One aspect of Leyshock's work that holds particular significance is his involvement with youth outreach. He works closely with Allegheny County Parole, and when the organization has

Leyshock takes pride in the diverse clientele, which encompasses individuals from various financial backgrounds, religions, genders, and ages. Leyshock's dedication to creating an inclusive space has attracted clients who might not have found a home elsewhere.

Summer 2023 | theCITYSCENE a young person that expresses interest in the sport, they send them to Leyshock. “We don’t turn anyone away that wants to turn their life around.” Leyshock often becomes a strong male role model for them, acting as much as a mentor as a coach.

While some kids make it in the sport, others face challenges along the way. Leyshock notes, “The question becomes, which pull is stronger?”

Leyshock recognizes the importance of guiding these kids, regardless of the outcome – providing them with structure, discipline, and support.

“We also get the quiet kids, the ones who are having issues with being bullied. So, it’s both sides we see.” For these children, building confidence, determination, and resolve is key. “So many people have the impression with combat sports that it teaches kids to solve problems through violence.

That’s really not the case. Learning control of your body and your emotions gives anyone – not just kids – the self-assurance to know they can handle themselves in any situation. It’s about discipline and understanding when and when not to use their physical strength. It gives them goals and accomplishing goals builds confidence in and out of the ring.”

The impact of Leyshock's mentorship is exemplified through Zack Woznichak, one of the young men he trained and who now works as a trainer at the gym himself. Woznichak attended college at IUP, playing football there and graduating in 2017 with a degree in exercise science. During his time at IUP, however, he fell in with the wrong crowd and made negative choices leading to run-ins with the law.

Woznichak recalls, “I was at the lowest point of my life. I was stagnant. I lost my drive, lost my job, my livelihood, I lost everything. I didn’t really have a reason to leave the house – much less work out.” With little other options, he decided to rely on the personal trainer certification he earned in college to try to earn a living. It was through this that he met one of Leyshock’s clients, Morgan, who encouraged him to try out the gym. The decision to join her for a session there would change his life.

The Southside Boxing Club still uses the traditional “fight-in” method, in which – on your first day, before they teach you anything – they put you in gear and match you to someone with comparable skill level and throw you in the ring.

Woznichak fought-in on the first day with an MMA fighter and fought 3 tough rounds, which he describes as “the best day of my life up to that point”. The grueling experience ignited a spark within Woznichak, rekindling his drive and determination to overcome his struggles.

The Southside Boxing Club has given Woznichak a goal to work towards when he thought all his goals were done. “Because of Matt and what we’ve

accomplished, what I’ve worked towards and all the awards and accolades, there are years’ worth of positive things I’ve been doing to get my life on track.

I live and breathe Southside Boxing. Before joining, all I could say was ‘I’m sitting at home, I have no job, I have nothing to do.’ Now I have 2 jobs, a client list, and goals.” Woznichak spends much of his time at the club coaching underprivileged youth, inspiring them to live a life of honor and integrity, encouraging them to not make the same mistakes he once did. And after training for just one year, he won the Pennsylvania State Boxing Tournament at 160 pounds. This level of accomplishment is almost unheard of for someone with no prior experience in the sport and shines a light on his resolve to change his life.

Beyond the gym's walls, Leyshock’s and Suska’s dedication to the sport and their community has led to collaborations with other notable figures. Woznichak recently starred in a commercial for Project 1 Nutrition (cover story and member of The Southside Boxing Club Gregg Rudolph’s company) alongside Kurt Angle, a legendary professional wrestler and Olympic gold medalist. The experience held deep personal meaning for Woznichak, as he has kept a signed picture of Angle from his youth hanging in his childhood bedroom for years. The photo reads, “To Zack, best wishes always. – Kurt Angle.”

This full-circle moment underscored the progress Woznichak had made, despite his setbacks.

Reflecting on his approach to boxing and training, Leyshock emphasizes that it has always been an integral part of his life.

It's not just a hobby or a passing interest—it's a lifelong passion that he shares with others. “It’s just something I’ve always done.

Something I will always do.” For many of his clients, the sport is the same for them: “These are the people that don’t fight for social media validation or even the money. That’s how much they love it. It’s their passion.”

Through his gym, Leyshock has created a space where individuals can channel their energy, find their purpose, and challenge themselves both physically and mentally. The Southside Boxing Club stands as a testament to the power of purpose, a kind of purpose that can transform lives. Through its commitment to fostering discipline, skill development, and community spirit, the club has become a breeding ground for champions. Aspiring boxers, regardless of their skill level, can find a welcoming and supportive environment at the Southside Boxing Club. With its impressive track record of producing accomplished fighters, the club continues to inspire individuals to reach their full potential both in and outside the ring.

WHY COLD PLUNGES ARE WORTH THE SHIVERS

Cold plunges and showers may sound grueling but the temperature shock to your system creates a plethora of favorable reactions for the body.

Why is subjecting yourself to tortuous conditions in the first place considered a trend? Let’s dive in.

First off, what is a cold plunge, anyway? A plunge is considered when you fully submerge your body up to your neck or beyond into water that is below sixty degrees. Whether you are plunging or cranking the knob on your shower all the way to the cool side, prepare for goosebumps!

Beyond chills, benefits may include improved circulation, immune system and even weight loss. The shock of cold water kicks our circulatory system into gear, expect an increase in blood flow to warm your organs, an innate survival mechanism we have kept through evolution. Healthy circulation is vital for our entire body, but in terms of appearances, this benefit may include improved quality of skin!

Chilly temperatures also force the metabolism to speed up as your body is fighting to keep warm while under the (good) stress of cold water. As we know, a fast metabolism burns more calories so expect some energy expenditure when trying this hack. Pro tip: you can also turn the thermostat down in your home to around sixtyfour to sixtyseven degrees, some studies claim that cooler air has the same effect and may even burn brown adipose (fat) tissue.

A study from the Netherlands showed that increasing cold exposure in the shower (hot to cold) for thirty to ninety seconds daily can have immune system benefits. Study participants showed a thirty percent decrease in sick days from work, which was believed to be due to an impact on less severe symptoms when falling ill. Research demonstrates that

Lastly, aside from the health perks that society has become increasingly obsessed with as of late, we are now chasing dopamine more than ever. Andrew Huberman, a neuroscientist at Stanford University often discusses how we seek quick fixes of this neurotransmitter, which often leads to crashes and thus leaving our body in a vicious cycle of craving more. Quick fixes of dopamine could be checking your phone, eating a sweet treat, or clocking out early. Those provide temporary but immediate reliefs.

However, he discusses that cold showers and plunges are methods for creating a sustained dopamine

release as the body gets energized from fighting off the cold and works to heat up our core again.

Some research shows that cold showers may even help with depression and anxiety. A good thing to know, cold showers are great for the morning as they create energy. Hot showers are great for night time as they will cool your body down. A cool body temperature is optimal for sleeping. An easy way to think about it is that the temperature of the water will essentially have the opposite effect on your internal system.

NO MORE MR.NICE GUY Dear Doctor Love, I am a recently divorced 47-year-old man seeking your wise advice. After enduring a turbulent 18-year marriage, I find myself back in the hazardous world of dating. I consider myself a gentleman and I like to treat a lady well. But after attempting to court a few lovely women – in anticipation of finding a new serious relationship – I’ve faced multiple accusations of being TOO NICE! So I have a very simple question: is it true that nice guys really do finish last?

Dear Mr. Nice Guy, Welcome to the wild world of postdivorce dating! It's a jungle out there, but I’m here to guide you through the treacherous terrain. Many things have changed over the last 18 years, but the one thing that has not changed is the instinctive masculinefeminine energy exchange.

Allow me to explain to you why you've taken on the nice guy stereotype. The main problem lies in the fact that men and women speak different dating languages. When a woman tells you you're too nice, she's actually saying, "Hey buddy, your masculinity gauge is running low and you're coming across like a wet noodle."

Let's take a moment here to discuss the inner workings of the Nice Guy’s brain when he takes a romantic interest in a woman. The so-called Nice Guy thinks he must immediately place the woman on a pedestal, showering her with a high level of agreeableness, excessive sensitivity, and extreme neediness.

The problem with this strategy is that Mr. Nice Guy now starts to be viewed by the woman as Mr. Low Value Guy, especially when his actions start to crossover into desperation territory.

You see, all women have an internal data processor located in their subconscious mind. That processor gathers information and rapidly obtains and identifies your profile.

You are then placed into one of two zones: Man Zone or Friend Zone.

Which one you land in is entirely up to you.

So how do you turn up that masculine energy? Women are attracted to men who exude confidence, assertiveness, charm, and charisma.

Show her that you can take charge and make decisions without having to seek her approval for every little thing. Remember, being a gentleman doesn't mean being a doormat. Be kind, be generous, be charming, be easy going – but be the man. Trust me, she'll appreciate your kindness mixed with a hint of mystery, masculinity, and confidence.

Believe in yourself and your selfworth as a catch, but never brag.

If she senses you’re looking for validation and overcompensating with the nice guy routine, she’ll begin to question your worth as a quality partner. Needy behavior displays a lack of confidence. Remember men: free

attention has no value. Women have the tendency to underestimate anything that is too easy. The more you chase her like a puppy dog, the less she'll value your masculine energy.

In conclusion, Mr. Nice Guy, there is some truth to the notion of “nice guys finishing last.” Most nice guys don’t know the difference between taking care of a woman and being subservient to a woman. Remember, a woman will still expect you to take the lead.

With that being said, even though being excessively nice can dampen attraction, it doesn't mean you need to be a jerk to succeed in today’s dating world. Proudly maintain your inner masculinity by tapping into your confidence and strength as a man; treat her amazingly while embracing your new status as a GOOD GUY as opposed to the NICE GUY.
