Alan's f irst major breakthrough came with the invention of interchangeable necktie knots. Named the Proper Knot, this innovation was born out of necessity and a desire for novelty in his wardrobe. His journey through designing and manufacturing these knots was a testament to his dedication – teaching himself

He started with the goal of simply paying his car payment each month, then having some extra spending money so he could save more of his regular income f rom his sales job.

This venture took a signif icant turn when Alan connected with WWE wrestlers. Through a connection with a local sports writer who was a regular customer of the Proper Knot, he was introduced to a pro wrestler who happened to be in town. Alan says, “In October 2015, my f riend called me and said, ‘WWE is in town. There's one of the wrestlers that I know very well. He loves suits. He loves fashion. I think you'd want to meet him and connect with him.’ So I met him in the middle of October at the Marriott next to the arena. I'm supposed to meet him at 9 o'clock and he didn't get there until 12:30. So I'm just sitting there with two books of fabric in the lobby waiting for him, but I didn’t leave. I knew just getting my foot in the door would be huge. Finally we meet, I get him measured and everything. And that was the start of my relationship with WWE. He bought 10 suits the f irst night that I worked with him. Ten! I did them all for him at cost and then I messed up every single suit. We went back and forth for three and a half months or so until it dawned on me that I should just perfect one suit and make sure that it f it and then do the rest.

There were a lot of growing pains in the beginning. He fortunately was very genuine and patient through the whole process. He was so understanding that I was new to what I was doing. And he just was a very incredible human being that opened up a lot of doors for me.

In January 2016, he called me and said, ‘I want you to travel with WWE. I want to introduce you to everybody in the locker room.’” It was Alan’s ability to tailor suits to unique styles and preferences – and the trial-and-error process of perfecting his craft – that opened doors to a new clientele, including celebrities and athletes.

His f irst foray into traveling with the WWE was also met with unexpected twists and turns. “That f irst trip is a funny story. I was so excited I hired a driver to drive me to the airport. And I flew on Spirit and I went to the wrong airport, so I missed my flight the f irst day. I was like, ‘shit, this is bad.’” Alan explains that he had to scramble to book another flight out of Pittsburgh with very little cash on hand at the time f rom investing in the businesses. Eventually, he did end up at the right place, albeit quite late for the event. “I still sold 52 suits

in three days to nine different athletes.”

In March 2016, ESPN did a story on WWE and one of the wrestlers discussed Alan, his clothing brand, and the custom suit he was wearing. It was an incredible moment for Alan that would soon turn into disaster: “My

and then ended up pulling my cell phone record. He realized I was traveling when I wasn't supposed to. So I ended up getting f ired shortly thereafter.

And at that time I had just built a house. I had paid off my student loans and then I was f ired within six or eight months of that.”

Alan called his f inancial advisor and explained he needed to liquidate the entirety of his 401K account because he wanted to focus on his fashion brand without having to search for another job. “It was $180,000 that I had saved up. I thought that money would last me two, maybe three years, and give me time to grow my business. It lasted six months. And I was completely, utterly broke by 2017.”

Facing insurmountable debt, Alan ended up doing debt relief on all his personal credit cards. “It was a business decision because I realized I wasn't going to climb out of that. I defaulted on three credit cards. I was getting harassed by attorneys all the time. My credit was 500. I pretty much lost everything. I'd come home and my water was shut off, my power was shut off, my gas was shut off probably 15 to 20 times during this period,” he recalls.

“2017 was a pretty brutal experience for me. It was a dark situation. I have a tattoo on my arm of a number: negative $86.40. That was my bank account in 2017. It's a reminder of where I came f rom. I went to get groceries at Giant Eagle and I got declined on my debit card and I realized I was in a bad spot. Probably about two weeks away f rom completely going under. And so I rallied. I started collecting outstanding debts just to make sure my employees were paid. 2017 was when everything started shifting. I had a lot of experiences that year that made me really see that I have what it takes to be successful, to keep pushing forward no matter what.”

Another pivotal learning moment for Alan came at the beginning of 2018 when he was asked to work on a collaboration for WWE and KFC. “I was tasked with turning two WWE wrestlers into Colonel Sanders. Ric Flair was the original for

So within one week of the event, they picked a different person, Shawn Michaels.That was obstacle number one, changing models on such a short deadline.” Alan arrived in New York on a Saturday at two o'clock, with the event being held on Sunday. Upon delivering the suit, he was thanked for his quick turn-around time but told it was the wrong color. “They wanted pure white and it was an off white,” he explains.

When the project director told Alan that they planned to simply go and f ind a pure white suit off the rack that night, he thought, “no, this is a huge project for me.”

“I told them, ‘I'm gonna handle it, I'm gonna knock it out.’ I had no idea what I was gonna do.”

Alan initially went to Target with an ill-advised plan to bleach the suit. With a bucket of bleach and rubber gloves he went back to his hotel room. Fortunately, he only dipped one pant leg in at the cuff, letting it sit for a half an hour. It ended up deteriorating the fabric. Off to Google once more, he searched “craft stores in Manhattan.” At 6 p. m. Saturday evening, he headed out into the Big Apple with only a hope and a prayer. “I go to the f irst craft store and I'm talking to this employee, a high school girl, and I'm like, ‘hi, I need help. I don't know what to do. What should I do?’ After discussing the different options, Alan settled on fabric spray paint. “By the time I got all situated, it was 9:30 at night and I had no choice but to just spray paint all night long in my hotel bathroom.” Where there's a will, there's a way, right?

“It was brutal. I woke up high as a kite f rom all the fumes of the paint. I can’t imagine the hotel staff was happy with me when I left. I held up the suit to the window and I thought, ‘wow, I think I pulled this off.’ I ended up hitting it with another coat that morning. I got it to them right in the nick of time and it was perfect, I couldn’t believe it. That was another experience that taught me so much.”

For the rest of 2018, business continued to grow and expand. Alan reports that every year since then, they've been prof itable as a business. “After going through those diff icult times I realized what I needed to do to make it work,” he says. Fast forward to 2019, and Alan’s clothing company was hitting six f igures a month, consistently. And then 2020 happened.

“In March 2020, we did $1,200 in sales. And I was just like, ‘oh, we're in a bad spot again.’” Not sure what was going to happen and suddenly facing a huge setback, Alan reached out to his partners. Realizing that every minute was crucial, Alan pushed them to launch a new company, then and there. “I remember one of my partners was on the highway at the time. He pulled off the road to take notes because he could tell how serious this situation was.” Just 24 hours later, they ended up being one of the f irst companies in the country to sell face masks.

One viral Facebook post was all it took to sell about $56,000 worth of face masks at $9 a mask. With limited supply in the market at the time, and a stylish product, the masks were an instant success. All in all, Alan says they sold about 500,000 face masks and made about $2,000,000 to keep everything afloat. He also donated about $25,000 to Allegheny Health Network for women's behavioral studies. “I was also able to get my two partners to quit their day jobs. They were able to come on full time after this. It was a good feeling to be able to provide something so essential, and to be able to give to charity, change my partners’ lives, and ensure my other employees still had jobs during the pandemic.”

By October 2020, with the market so saturated with masks, Alan and his partners decided to pull out of the business and start to once again focus on the clothing brand. “It was our lifeblood to get through the pandemic, and we were able to do a lot of good, I think, but we knew the time had come to pull out. And we stayed true to who we were the whole time and kind of just kept pushing and kept going so it allowed people to believe in us and trust in our business.”

Alan says it was a very educational experience f rom a humanity standpoint, but also business in general. Learning how to quickly start a brand new business, deal with customer complaints and Facebook shutdowns (due to initially slow shipping times because of supply-chain issues) and how to get his team through tough times all made him a better entrepreneur.

When asked what he would tell other business owners, he says, “You have to understand it's going to be f rustrating, but you just keep going with it. You’ll have support and criticism" Thankfully, post-pandemic business started to take off for Alan again. He says, “It was a big change for us when the dust settled a little bit. I think people were just ready to get out and about. Business has been great and now with expanding into the new space in Mt. Lebanon, I’m just excited for the future. I’ve learned so many lessons through all of this. The most important thing is probably that life takes risk. It's a big risk to do something different. But it’s worth it.

People are going to judge you or misinterpret your intentions a lot. They’re going to judge you no matter what you do in life.”

When speaking with Alan, his passion for helping others shines through immediately. He says that charity has always been at the center of his mission. “To give back, to make the world a little better. I love helping people. Just the fulf illment of helping other people means so much because I didn't have that in the beginning.I had nobody to help me. I mean, I was so alone with everything. So if I could help somebody fast forward a lot of things for themselves, that’s part of my goal.” Keeping in line with that goal, David Alan Clothing hosts an annual fashion show that benef its local charities. This year, the spectacular red carpet event was held in Pittsburgh on October 14th, with proceeds benef iting the Ryan Shazier Fund. Over $75,000 was raised during the event through ticket sales, auctions, and more. Many of Alan’s clients were present, flashing the signature DA label inside their suits at every opportunity.

“It’s amazing to see people fall in love with your work. I’ve had the honor of working with celebrities and athletes like Pat McAfee, Mitch Keller, and David Bednar. Gregg Rudolph, a major client. I've done stuff for Jim Tressel, Sonya Deville, Teddy Swims, John Cena. I did Ric Flair's wedding. I did the Undertaker's Hall of Fame outf it. And Ryan Shazier, I did his wedding.

We designed his suit with his logo on the back of his jacket. It’s surreal sometimes, thinking I’ve met all these people, they love what I do, and it started with neckties and a desire for something different."

Additionally, Alan has done quite a bit of public speaking and already has several speaking engagements for the coming year. “I really enjoy that side of it because I just like sharing and I like people too. If I could change one person’s life, help someone believe in themselves, that's really the coolest thing ever to me” As well as public speaking, Alan has built a state of the art podcast studio at his new location. Purposefully making the podcast room a focal point, it has glass windows so customers can see the recording process while shopping. Looking forward to a new podcast release at the end of the year, Alan says he wants to bring people together to share their stories.

Today, Alan's business portfolio includes David Alan Clothing, a marketing company, a readyto-wear line, and his original interchangeable necktie knot venture. He has also expanded into women's fashion as well as accessories, bags, and shoes, demonstrating his adaptability and commitment to inclusivity. As he continues to expand his brand and influence, Alan remains a beacon of inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs and fashion enthusiasts alike.

Magician, Houdini historian, and Pittsburgh native Lee Terbosic bridges the gap between the fantastical and the tangible, creating a realm where anything seems possible. He stands as a figure of intrigue and his journey is a fantastical tale of lifelong dedication to his craft as well as a homage to the legendary Harry Houdini.

You're already successful. But I wanted to be more successful. Most kids learn stuff and then they never use it. Or they'll use tidbits of it into their career later on. No, I was showing these professors, I’m doing it in real time because of how you told me how to market.”

Terbosic's love of magic began at the tender age of nine. A birthday party magician left young Terbosic in awe, igniting a passion that would shape his life. His parents' support led him to the Carnegie Library in Homestead. Terbosic recalls, “I wasn't into reading at that age, but magic got me into reading. The funny thing is, when I found these magic books at the Carnegie Library, I went home, and I became the kid under the blankets with books and a flashlight at night. To me, they were all page turners.” Terbosic's early brush with magic was not without its mischief. He admits to having stolen those books from the library, a youthful transgression that speaks volumes of his dedication. “I was trying to learn the magic tricks, because it was like becoming a part of this secret society.

When I started doing magic tricks for my parents, I realized very quickly how intoxicating it is to have power. Because when you're a magician, you can do stuff that people cannot figure out. And as a young kid, doing that to adults and even to other kids – that's powerful. It's like a superpower. And all my secrets were in these books that I had to get from the library. So I kept them. What can I say, I took old books. What a rebel. I was learning all this magic and deception and so I thought, I don't want to give these things back after a month. I want to keep these forever.”

Upon graduating, Terbosic was signed by an agent and was drawn to the road. He spent the next decade touring the country, doing corporate shows and entertaining on college campuses nationwide. “I figured out how the booking process worked and I ended up performing at all these colleges all over the nation.

Some would have me come back every semester. They really liked me. I built my career in that world, traveling from city to city, just like Houdini did back when he was going from city to city. I was doing the same thing, just on college campuses.”

Terbosic's commitment to magic was unwavering. By the age of 10, he embarked on a professional journey that never saw him take up any other job. “I've been a magician since the age of 10.

I'm 41. And I've never done anything else,” he proudly states.

His journey took him from a young enthusiast to a magician of repute, performing shows all over the country and winning many accolades, including the 2015 APCA Magician of the Year.

Despite his early choice of a lifelong career, Terbosic didn't shun formal education. He attended Robert Morris University, focusing on business and marketing, a decision influenced by his mentor, renowned magician Paul Gertner. “He said to me, 'Lee, if you're going to be a magician for your career, you have to understand one word: show business. Because that's what you're in. But I'm going to break it down for you: it's really not one word, it's two.

Most people get that confused. The first word is show. You're a showman. You're an entertainer. I can see that. I can see how you perform. You’ve got that part down. The one thing that most people screw up in their career is the second word: business.’

He told me if I could get the business part down, I would be as successful as I wanted to be. So, going to RMU was important.

At the same time, I was learning about Harry Houdini, and I read that not only was he an amazing magician and showman , he also understood the business of magic. He knew how to promote. He knew how to sell. When he would go to different cities and do stunts, he would always do it at the newspaper building. He would hang off the newspaper building upside down because he knew that it would get a crowd and the newspaper would put him on the

During that time, he also had the opportunity to go to New York City to help Gertner, his mentor, produce a show. “There were two reasons I thought something great could come of it. One was the alone time I would get with him, because that's a six hour drive to New York City. And in six hours, that's a lot of questions I could ask him. He'd been on the Tonight Show three times. He was Johnny Carson's personal magic teacher. Now, I had this chance to learn information from Paul and really see a pro's proin action. And the second reason was: New York is where Houdini is buried.”

Houdini's influence on Terbosic is profound. His fascination with the legendary magician turned him into a leading Houdini historian.

This obsession went beyond admiration – it shaped his destiny.

While in New York, Terbosic not only visited the site of the famed magician’s burial, but also had the opportunity to see original photos of Houdini, including one of him performing a straitjacket escape while hanging upside down in Pittsburgh. This ignited a spark within Terbosic. “Holding the photo of Houdini upside down in a straitjacket, I knew I wanted to replicate it. I wanted to do the same stunt, in the same place, 100 years to the day, which would be about five years later. And so, I committed to the idea right then and there, that night. I said, in 2016, on November 6th, at the corner of Wood Street and Liberty Avenue, I will be hanging 100 feet above the city of Pittsburgh, with thousands of people staring at me, escaping from this straitjacket. And over the next five years, I worked on the idea, and that is exactly what happened.”

Pittsburgh showed up for Terbosic in a big way for the stunt. The mayor’s office offered their full support, major roadways were blocked off, and thousands of people showed up to witness history being made – and repeated. “I did the stunt 100 years after Houdini, down to the minute. One hundred feet in the air, suspended from a crane.”

After his Houdini 100 stunt, Terbosic had all eyes on him. Within only a few months, Discovery Channel had reached out to him to do a 4-episode docuseries called “Houdini’s Last Secrets,” costarring George Hardeen, the great-nephew of Houdini. When Houdini passed away, he had no children. So the entirety of his collection was willed to Houdini’s brother – George’s grandfather | 23

theCITYSCENE | PGH Lifestyle – Theo Hardeen. Most of the items from the home were sold, with very few things remaining in the family. Therefore, when George Hardeen was growing up, he didn't have access to, or knowledge of, any of this. In fact, he wasn’t aware of his connection to Houdini until he was a teenager, unaware even of his own father’s full name: Harry Houdini Hardeen. Terbosic says, “When I met George, he obviously wanted to be in this show because he was fascinated about Harry's life, his uncle. But he didn't have any of this stuff. He had to go to museums to see his own family's relics.”

The show got rave reviews, and a second season was in the works when the COVID19 pandemic put everything to a halt.

However, it was this turn of events that brought Terbosic back to Pittsburgh full time. He recalls, “Being on the road all the time was tough. I had traveled for about 10 years straight. I had done a couple hundred shows a year. So I was never here, but I'm a Yinzer. I'm a Pittsburgh boy, but I had just spent all this time away from here. And for the longest time, it started to eat me up. That's when the idea of creating my own residency started. I grew up idolizing guys like David Copperfield, who I now know personally. I know Penn and Teller as well. And I look at David and Penn and Teller, and I look at their residencies in Las Vegas.

And they're at casinos. But what are casinos? They're hotels and gambling.

And that's when the light bulb went off in my head. I can do a magic show at a hotel in Pittsburgh.”

For the first part of the show, Terbosic plays Houdini on stage.

Set on October 9th, 1926 (the last date Harry was ever in his home), you'll see his life as it was then. You’ll hear stories and anecdotes, and learn facts about Houdini's life through first person narration, all while witnessing some truly magical moments in time – like the upside-down straitjacket escape.

For the second part of the show, Terbosic talks about Houdini’s death, then opens up a 15 minute Q&A with the audience.

“I have letters that Houdini wrote while he stayed at the Omni William Penn, simply called the William Penn Hotel at the time.

It's his actual handwritten note on William Penn stationery. I have a lot of artifacts I’ve collected over the years. So I'm going to be breaking out some of those things to share with the public because it’s so important to me.”

With his monumental success, one could see Terbosic choosing to be on stage for the rest of his life. However, he already has a trick up his sleeve in regards to retirement. “The number 52 has always stood out to me. And, of course, I became obsessed with Harry Houdini, like most magicians, except my obsession never ended.

He died on October 31st, 1926, at the age of 52. And I always thought that was really unique because his life played out like a pack of cards.

He lived 26 years in the 1800s, not famous and extremely poor. And he lived 26 years in the 1900s, as one of the most famous, wealthiest people on planet Earth. And then he passes away tragically at the age of 52.

Being that Harry passed on at 52, I decided quite a few years ago that my final performance will be at the age of 52. Which means I have 11 years left. And the clock is ticking.”

“I hope that in 100 years, some Pittsburgh magician replicates me.

I hope kids are writing book reports about my career and what I did here in Pittsburgh."

Terbosic’s show, “52 Up Close” at Hotel Monaco was the culmination of his residency idea and is a blend of sleight of hand, mind reading, and storytelling, deeply rooted in Pittsburgh, the city he adores. Inspired by a deck of cards, there are only 52 audience members per show and only 52 shows per year. It is an intimate experience of magic, and a rare opportunity to experience wonder firsthand.

His current show at Liberty Magic, “The Life and Death of Harry Houdini,” is a 75-minute long journey into Harry’s life, all set against the backdrop of his living room. Terbosic says, “I've been obsessed with Harry Houdini's living room for a long time.

The reason why was because, as a magician, where do I create my magic? I create it in my living room on the couch. That's where I think of everything. So I thought, maybe that's where all his inspiration was. He had the greatest library of magic in the world. And it all was at 278 West 113th Street, New York – Harlem of all places. His whole house was a museum. It was a living library. There were stacks of books everywhere. But in his living room, he had this amazing, beautiful bookcase. And in that bookcase were the crown jewels of our world – stuff that's a couple hundred years old, that's lived on because of Harry Houdini. So I had to replicate that for my show.”

As Terbosic approaches his self-imposed retirement age, he reflects on his legacy and future. “I hope that in 100 years, some Pittsburgh magician replicates me. I hope kids are writing book reports about my career and what I did here in Pittsburgh. And the legacy that I left. That's truly what my goal is. When they talk about Pittsburgh magicians, I want my name to be at least near the top. I have 11 years to go. And then I'm retiring. I'm walking away from the stage. I won't walk away from the magic. I will walk away from hanging from cranes and swallowing needles.

Don't get me wrong, I'll always be a magician until the day I die. But Houdini died at 52. So that is when my career will end as well. I will step off the stage for the last time. I'll probably headline one of the theaters in Pittsburgh, and that'll be my final live show. And then I'm going to walk into some next transition of my life. I already kind of know where that's headed, but I can't tell you that. A magician never reveals his secrets.”

In the heart of Oakmont lies a sweet haven known as Oakmont Bakery. This Pittsburgh gem is a delight for anyone with a sweet tooth. Upon entering, the aroma of freshly baked goodies fills the air, from donuts and cookies to savory breads and sandwiches and then some! Oakmont Bakery has been a staple in the community since its opening in 1988 on Allegheny River Boulevard. Back then, it was the only full-service retail bakery in town, with just six employees. The bakery was the brainchild of owner Marc Serrao, who began his baking career at the age of 13 at the Donut Connection in Penn Hills. Now, with his wife and five children involved in the business, Oakmont Bakery is truly a family affair.

As the popularity of Oakmont Bakery grew, so did its space requirements. After five years at its initial location, the bakery moved to Allegheny Avenue, expanding to an impressive 8,000 square feet. In 2019, Oakmont Bakery relocated once again, this time to its current address at 1 Sweet Street. The new location boasts a whopping 18,000 square feet of bakery space and 110 parking spots, all of which are occupied on weekends. handful of times each week I hear, “I just woke up one day and everything looked different. When did I start looking so OLD?!”

Aesthetically, there are a number of changes we can predict—bone structure will change, leaving a less robust framework for the soft tissues of the skin to rely upon.

That smooth, soft skin of your youth may be looking weathered by the stresses you endure each day; lines from stress and smiles might grace the curves of your cheeks and jawline. The contours of your cheeks may look a little less wholesome and a bit flat. When you envision these changes, you may be associating that feeling with the first chilly day of autumn, with winds beginning to pick up—all signs of a very long, cold winter ahead.

Everybody has an opinion associated with aging gracefully. Over the years I’ve enjoyed hearing a wide range of hypotheses for maintaining internal peace, people tug-ofwarring between “natural aging” and “naturally-enhanced aging.” It always comes down to one thing: the result of improved confidence. What makes you feel the most comfortable in your skin? A step further, many of the folks I’ve had the pleasure of treating over the last 14+ years are in an entirely different phase of life than when we first began working together. I’ve watched young women become mothers, mothers-of-thebride become grandmothers (many times over), and millions of strands of hair fade to gray.

While we're evolving, so is the beauty industry. Once hailed as a luxury experience, aesthetic enhancement is now the norm for many women over thirty. With both men and women now feeling empowered to intervene with respect to the progression of their age and health, it’s imperative that they research the industry, as well as the options available to them.

We've all heard of it, many of us have been victimized by it, and some of us are repeat offenders of the dating phenomenon known as ghosting. While it's is generally frowned upon as an inconsiderate and hurtful way to end a romantic connection, there are instances where this elusive act might be the most responsible (and even the safest) course of action. Before you raise your eyebrows in disbelief, let's dive in to why sometimes, ghosting might be the only way out.

Imagine this scenario: you've been dating someone for a while, and everything seems to be going well. However, as time goes on, you start to notice some alarming red flags.

Perhaps they exhibit controlling behavior, become overly possessive, or show signs of aggression. In such situations, personal safety should always be your top priority.
