THEATREWORLD EDITORIAL
In the 1990s, I was deeply involved in expanding my acoustical-panel business for cinema theatres, particularly across South India. Back then, anyone who was someone believed that constructing a cinema theatre was the ultimate status symbol. Previously, this was true for cold-storages, and now it is about building an engineering or medical college.

In that decade, Karnataka and Kerala each had around 1,000 single-screen theatres, Tamil Nadu had approximately 2,500, unified Andhra Pradesh had about 3,500, and so the total for South India was 8,000 out of 12,000 for all-India. Cinema was very strong in the South.
Driven by my passion to saturate the market, I toured the hinterlands extensively and engaged with the entire ecosystem, not only cinema owners (our customers) but also sound engineers, projectionists, seating suppliers, HVAC vendors, and more. This immersion gave me profound insight into how the cinema-exhibition industry worked: the issues, challenges, joys, and sorrows.
When I first attended CineAsia, an international trade show for cinema-theatre equipment, in Hong Kong in 1997, I realised just how wide the knowledge gap was for India compared to the global market. That moment sparked the creation of the Anutone newsletter, which eventually evolved into TheatreWorld. In the early days, it was fully funded by Anutone, since we had very few subscribers and advertisers. The initial editions were almost entirely written by me, covering a wide variety of topics, primarily tailored to cinema-owners’ interests, such as projectors, audio, screen types, acoustics, and more.
In 1999, I made the magazine independent and took it to cinema shows around the world, ShoWest (now CinemaCon) in Las Vegas, Cine Expo in Amsterdam (now CineEurope in Barcelona), and CineAsia in Hong Kong (now in Bangkok). It made business sense. Advertising had to be secured from global brands. In 2001, the magazine, now known as TheatreWorld, was officially registered as a publication.
TheatreWorld became a platform for the West to learn about India, and for India to engage with the West. Though it may seem easy now, back then it was a major struggle just to break even. Cinema owners expected complimentary copies, and advertisers were hard to come by. Any downturn in the industry, including the impact of 9/11 in 2001, meant that advertising was invariably the first casualty.
In 2004, Raghav joined me, and it quickly became evident that he shared my passion, both for the cinemaexhibition industry and for our magazine. He began as a graphic designer and soon advanced to become our business manager. By 2014, after 15 years at the helm, I decided to leave the business entirely. I felt that the original goal of bridging the information gap between India and the rest of the world had been fulfilled. Along the way, I had gained invaluable insights, made lasting friendships, and became well-known in the industry.
The time previously devoted to the magazine now flowed into making Anutone, my original pursuit, exceptional. I had considered winding things down completely, but when Raghav said he would like to take over the reins, I sold him the publishing rights of TheatreWorld, including its goodwill, for INR 1.
Over the past decade, Raghav has elevated TheatreWorld to even greater heights, proving himself a worthy successor to the legacy we built.
He founded Big Cine Expo, an international trade show held annually in India, ranked second largest in the world, in terms of footfall, thereby providing the industry its own meet-and-greet platform beyond just the magazine. Both the magazine and the trade show now enjoy strong patronage, thanks to his leadership. We are a mutual admiration society!
As TheatreWorld celebrates the Silver Jubilee, 25 years of publishing excellence, my heartfelt congratulations go to Raghav and his team at Network208. I continue to wish him and everyone there the very best for the future.

From the whirring reels of film projectors to the crystal clarity of digital screens, TheatreWorld celebrates twenty-five remarkable years of chronicling the evolution of cinema exhibition. Since its inception in 1999, the magazine’s journey has mirrored the transformation of India’s silver screen—from single-screen theatres illuminated by celluloid light to a vibrant multiplex network powered by laser projection, immersive sound, and smart technology.

Over these decades, the exhibition industry has navigated seismic change: the shift from analogue to digital projection, from manual ticketing to AI-driven operations, and from static viewing to a personalised, data-enabled ecosystem. Yet one truth remains constant—the collective joy of watching stories unfold on the big screen! Far from fading in the digital age, theatrical exhibition has re-emerged as a cultural cornerstone, reaffirmed by 2025’s record-breaking box office that celebrated audiences’ enduring love for cinema.
India’s cinema story is one of evolution and balance, shaped by two enduring forces— the timeless single-screen theatre and the dynamic multiplex. For generations, single-screens stood as cultural landmarks where communities gathered to celebrate cinema. They were more than buildings; they were emotional spaces connecting families and generations through shared experiences. The liberalisation of the 1990s opened a new chapter with multiplexes designed for modern audiences. When India’s first multiplex, PVR Anupam, opened in Saket, New Delhi, in 1997, it marked a defining shift in how films were experienced. Multiplexes introduced comfort, technology, and variety, elevating moviegoing from pastime to lifestyle.
Today, India’s exhibition industry thrives on this dual model—heritage theatres reinventing themselves with digital projection and upgraded seating, and multiplex chains expanding into smaller towns with premium experiences. Together, they form the twin pillars of India’s cinema culture: one preserving nostalgia, the other driving innovation.
The rise of multiplexes, led by pioneers such as PVR INOX, Cinépolis, Miraj, etc has redefined entertainment across the country. What began as an urban luxury is now a nationwide phenomenon, shaping how millions experience films and inspiring new creativity and investment across the exhibition sector.
For twenty-five years, TheatreWorld has stood as the definitive voice for the cinema exhibition industry—not only in India but across global markets. More than a magazine, it has evolved into a knowledge hub connecting exhibitors, technology innovators, and content creators. Through in-depth features, market insights, and technical coverage, TheatreWorld has empowered exhibitors to modernise and grow. Its influence extends beyond print, serving as a bridge between global studios, technology providers, and exhibitors across the globe.
When I joined TheatreWorld in 2004, I entered a space built on passion and purpose—values deeply ingrained by one man: Sandeep Mittal. His vision had already transformed a simple concept into a unified voice for the exhibition sector, bridging knowledge gaps between India and the world. His meticulous attention to detail, pursuit of excellence, and deep understanding of cinema made every edition a benchmark.
When Mr. Mittal entrusted TheatreWorld to me in 2014, it was more than a transition— it was the passing of a legacy. His confidence remains my greatest motivation. Every milestone we achieve today is rooted in the foundation he built. That vision took shape in 2016 with the launch of Big Cine Expo, India’s only trade show devoted to cinema exhibition and now one of Asia’s largest.
As TheatreWorld celebrates its Silver Jubilee, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Sandeep Mittal—our founder, mentor, and true visionary—whose legacy continues to inspire and guide us. A special note of thanks to Mrs. Bindu Mittal, Operations Director at Anutone, for her unwavering support and contributions. At this moment, I want to express my deepest gratitude to Bhavanashi Ramakrishna and Bobby Chetia for their support and camaraderie during our time as teammates.
And as the reel keeps turning, the story continues. See you at CineAsia 2025, where the next chapter of TheatreWorld’s journey unfolds on the global stage.

During the National Day holiday, the Hong Kong SAR Government partnered with various sectors to launch a series of cultural and leisure initiatives aimed at celebrating the festive season with the public. Among these, the ‘HalfPrice Movie Day’ campaign, organised by commercial cinemas citywide on October, sparked a surge in demand. Several cinema ticketing systems experienced unprecedented traffic spikes within a short timeframe, leading to long queues and congestion, with estimated wait times reaching up to 99 minutes. In contrast, cinemas such as Emperor Cinemas and Cinema City demonstrated operational resilience, maintaining stable system performance under heavy traffic and delivering a seamless seat selection and ticketing experience for customers. This stability was underpinned by the robust capabilities of Damai Entertainment's Fenghuang Yunzhi iCIRENA smart system. Fenghuang Yunzhi is a digital cinema management platform developed by Damai Entertainment, currently deployed across 5,600 cinemas in mainland China, where it holds a leading market share. In March 2024, drawing on its extensive experience in the mainland film market, Damai Entertainment launched iCIRENA - the international version of Fenghuang Yunzhi - at the Hong Kong International Film & TV Market. iCIRENA's strong performance during the National Day cinema surge can be attributed to its native cloud-based architecture and advanced algorithmic technology.

The platform overcomes the technical limitations of traditional cinema management systems, delivering significant improvements in data processing efficiency and overall system performance. A cinema manager using the iCIRENA smart system said: "The system performed exceptionally well, particularly during the presale for 'Half-Price Movie Day', when many other cinemas experienced long queues and system outages. iCIRENA delivered a seamless ticketing experience, which undoubtedly boosted our sales performance." Another cinema staff member added: "The stability of iCIRENA far exceeds that of our previous system. Its core strength lies in its real-time responsiveness to market dynamics, enabling us to adjust screening strategies on the fly based on live data." Additionally, iCIRENA's comprehensive functionality has enhanced the cinema's broader ‘Movie+’ business operations. "With iCIRENA, customers can conveniently purchase popcorn and snacks online, further increasing our revenue." The performance disparity between cinema systems during this National Day period underscores a growing
technological divide in the film industry's digital transformation. The digital management model exemplified by iCIRENA not only enhances system performance and user experience in ticketing operations but also paves the way for broader innovation and technological advancement across the sector. As audience expectations for online ticketing continue to rise, stable, efficient, and intelligent systems are becoming essential to a cinema's competitive edge. iCIRENA's success during the ‘Half-Price Movie Day’ campaign offers a replicable blueprint for digital upgrades, potentially accelerating the development of smart cinemas throughout Hong Kong.
Shooting on film is only half the story. To capture the full glory of the colour and detail that film affords, how it is exhibited really matters. The premier way is, of course, likewise on film so as not to lose any of the visual texture of how the work was made. Achieving this requires two elements: the creation of film exhibition prints and the cinemas' ability to screen them. Both have been under threat for some time. On the production side, digital became the go-to for costeffectiveness. At the same time, film exhibition in the UK suffered greatly in 2013 when the UK Film Council subsidised the cost of digital projector installations in cinemas via the Digital Screen Network. The investment equipped 240 screens in
212 cinemas across the UK with digital projection technology, leading to the decline of exhibition on film and, subsequently, the existence of film labs. It's amid these difficult market conditions that Cinelab Film & Digital was born. Now, 12 years later, more filmmakers and audiences want to make and experience film in the original medium. Cinelab is in a unique position to have seen and contributed to the revival of exhibitions on 35mm. It's one of only a few facilities in the world with the capability and specialism to produce 35mm film prints for theatrical exhibition. In the last few years, the lab made exhibition prints for some of the most acclaimed features, including 'Nosferatu', 'Kinds Of Kindness', 'Civil War', 'The Zone of Interest', 'Aftersun', 'Asteroid City', 'Poor Things', and 'The Tragedy Of Macbeth'. Plus, it's creating prints for the upcoming features 'The Cut' and 'Bugonia'. Adrian Bull, CEO at Cinelab Film & Digital, notes: "The resurgence of 35mm exhibition isn't about nostalgia - it's about quality, intention, and respect for the filmmaker's craft. Seeing a film projected on film connects
audiences to the creative process in a way no digital format can. It's immensely rewarding for us at Cinelab to help keep that full-circle experience alive." Director Sean Ellis shot his latest feature, 'The Cut', starring Orlando Bloom as a boxer ending his retirement to pursue a championship title while a newfound, dangerous obsession takes hold. The film was shot on a mix of 35mm and 16mm, which Cinelab scanned and processed, and also created an exhibition print. For Sean, exhibiting films on film that were shot using the medium is ‘the ideal situation’. In August, 'The Cut' was screened at the Curzon in Soho, with Sean seeing his feature on film for the first time after multiple digital screenings. "I saw the movie in a whole different way," he says. "There's something about the frequency of 24fps, actual frames going through a projector I don't know what it is, but it makes what you're seeing feel alive way more than digital." "There's always something magical about actually getting your rushes back," says Sean, noting how "There's always an element that you didn't account for that I've never been disappointed by." For Sean, film provides an

additive quality to his work. "The way light is recorded [on film] it's a nice surprise, and it's better than I can imagine." On 'The Cut', however, the surprise didn't come in the form of visuals - it was ‘the quality of the sound, the actual film sounded amazing,’ he adds. Of the visuals and the sound, Sean says, "it just feels organic, and it feels like it has a bit of a life of its own. It wants to live in some respect. I think there's a coldness to the digital world. It never gets any life other than what it is." Edinburgh's the Filmhouse, one of the UK's most storied independent cinemas, reopened earlier this year - after a three-year closure - partly due to the audience's resurgent appetite to see films on film. In London, the Prince Charles Cinema has long been committed to exhibiting films on 35mm and 70mm prints and is a favourite among filmmakers and cinephiles alike, including the director Paul Thomas Anderson, who said that the cinema ‘has a place in my heart’. Director Quentin Tarantino's dedication to film goes far beyond using it in his own productions. The owner of two cinemas in Los Angeles - New Beverly Cinema and Vista TheatreTarantino only screens film prints, even for features shot digitally. Cinelab created 35mm exhibition prints for 'The Zone of Interest' and 'Civil War', which were both made to digitally specifically capture a clinical look, so that they could be screened at his cinemas in his preferred medium. Cinelab is particularly proud to support the growing revival of film projection and aid filmmakers and exhibitors who believe that cinema on film offers an unmatched viewing experience.

Vista Group announced the launch of ‘React’, a powerful new pulse survey tool and the latest innovation within its Vista Cloud platform. Designed to transform how exhibitors understand and engage with moviegoers, React captures real-time moviegoer sentiment, satisfaction, and intent, converting emotional data into actionable insights that drive smarter marketing, programming, and operational decisions. "People are more than demographic and transactional records, and their thoughts and feelings are the missing data layer in cinema strategy. React captures this and makes it actionable, so exhibitors can deliver experiences that resonate, build loyalty, and drive repeat attendance," said Matthew Liebmann, Vista Group's Chief Product, Innovation and Marketing Officer. "React exemplifies our vision to sit at the heart of a connected film industry, delivering innovative solutions that allow our clients to deliver exceptional cinematic experiences efficiently and effectively." Unlike traditional survey tools, React is tailored specifically for the cinema
industry. With seamless integration across the Vista Cloud ecosystem, React allows exhibitors to measure audience satisfaction and intent immediately after a visit; forecast demand for upcoming titles using predictive sentiment signals; benchmark performance across titles, locations, and demographics; and drive personalised re-engagement campaigns based on real-time data. React is automatically triggered after a visit, leveraging existing member data to deliver a seamless and personalised experience. Alongside the survey email that members receive, integrated touch points like the Living Ticket ensure React reaches moviegoers at the right moment. Moviegoers are then invited to rate the movie they've just seen and share their interest in select upcoming titles, helping tailor future recommendations and engagement. In pilot tests, React saw exceptional engagement, with 90% of moviegoers who began the survey completing it, and doing so in under two minutes. Over one-third also provided open-text feedback - enabling AI-powered insights delivered to cinema teams in seconds. "No other innovation in Vista's 30-year history offers as much potential to assist so many

parts of exhibitors' businesses as React," added Liebmann. "It is more than a survey; it's a strategic bridge between what audiences do and what they think, helping exhibitors turn the end of every visit into the beginning of the next." React will be available to Vista Cloud clients, with movie-related questions available this year and expanded features - including customisable operational questions - coming in the first half of 2026.

Meyer Sound has unveiled the USW 121P, the first model in a new generation of USW subwoofers that expands the company's heritage of low-frequency innovation into a broad range of applications. Drawing on the power and lowfrequency precision of the 2100 LFC but optimised for installs and portable uses, it delivers that model's signature performance in a streamlined form factor at a very attractive price point. The USW 121P is shipping now, giving designers and integrators immediate access to a versatile new solution for cinema, theatres, performing arts centres, houses of worship, spatial sound environments, and other
non-arrayed deployments. Because the USW-121P was designed from the outset as a non-arrayed subwoofer, it eliminates the rigging hardware and other elements required for flown configurations. Powered by a single 21-inch driver with a wide frequency range of 20-125 Hz (-10 dB), it delivers extended low end with the same power and precision that define Meyer Sound's flagship subwoofers. In larger systems, the USW-121P can also complement the 2100-LFC, adding ground-stacked depth beneath flown arrays. "With the USW-121P, we're giving our users a powerful, room-shaking solution in a new form factor and price point, opening the door to all sorts of scenarios," explains Andy Davies, Meyer Sound's Senior Director of Product Management. "Anyone who loves low frequencies is going to want to hear these subwoofers and incorporate them into their designs." At just 24.5 inches deep, the USW-121P provides substantial low-end extension without sacrificing valuable floor or stage space. Its rigid cabinet optimises acoustic volume and features a distinctive corner cut-out that allows for connector and cable clearance when the cabinet is against a wall or in other tight

spaces, including behind screens and in prosceniums. A low-velocity square port minimises noise even at extremely low frequencies. The USW-121P is also the first Meyer Sound subwoofer to feature Galileo Extended Networking (GEN1) technology, which integrates networked audio connectivity and Galileo GALAXY-class DSP directly into the loudspeaker, reducing or eliminating the need for separate system processors. As a result, calibration and deployment are simpler and more scalable across cinema, theatre, and spatial applications. Configuration, control, and monitoring are handled through the Nebra software platform and MAPP 3D system design and prediction tool. AES67 and analogue inputs are standard at launch, with Milan functionality planned in a later GEN-1 update, giving designers and integrators a flexible, future-ready workflow. With the USW-121P, Meyer Sound continues a legacy that began with the company's pioneering work on Apocalypse Now, delivering a practical, high-impact solution for today's complex system designs across cinema, performance, worship, and themed environments.

The allnew HSG Labs Checker is a low-cost tool designed to help cinema owners, managers, and staff monitor brightness levels and spot

check audio systems in order to ensure presentation quality is maintained. It is also an ideal tool for home cinema installations. Simple and easy to use, the Checker is a point-and-click device with an intuitive user interface designed for users with varying levels of technical expertise. The ergonomically designed hand-held device (which can also be tripodmounted) allows users to quickly take measurements inside a cinema to spot check various presentation parameters from industry reference measurement positions.

These upgrades reflect our commitment to delivering high-quality, differentiated experiences that drive greater value perception, loyalty, and frequency across all types of films." All the new and upgraded locations will be equipped with IMAX with Laser, IMAX's most advanced entertainment experience. Immersive by design, IMAX with Laser has been developed from the ground up to deliver crystal clear, lifelike images and precision audio for a moviegoing experience unlike anything else. The experience is set apart by a groundbreaking 4K laser projection system that features a new optical engine, custom-designed lenses, and a suite of proprietary technology that delivers brighter images with increased resolution, deeper contrast, and the widest range of colours exclusively to IMAX screens.

The brand-new cinema in Frontignan is preparing to celebrate its official opening, marking a new era for moviegoers in the region. On this occasion, Strong-MDI warmly congratulates the cinema team for bringing this ambitious project to life and thanks the management for their trust in choosing its premium projection screens. Building on a successful first collaboration with the Agde cinema - whose main auditorium is equipped with a Northview 1.3 micro-perforated screen - the management of Frontignan, in

consultation with ADDE, naturally decided to continue the experience with Strong-MDI for its new facilities. The result: outstanding projection quality, designed to meet the demands of today's and tomorrow's 4K laser projection. "After the excellent experience in Agde, we approached this new project with great confidence. The image quality delivered by StrongMDI screens, combined with ADDE's integration expertise, meets our expectations perfectly," said Isabelle Moreau, Cinema Director. The project was carried out through close collaboration with ADDE, a renowned technical integrator, which ensured the supply and installation of the screens, including a micro-perforated HGA 1.7 screen in the main auditorium. This three-way partnership highlights the importance of technological innovation, personalised service, and close support. "We are proud to have supported this project alongside our trusted partners. ADDE has always acted as a catalyst between the best equipment on the market and exhibitors who want to offer the very best to their audiences," said Éric Le Cadre, Sales Director at ADDE. "For Strong-MDI, supporting projects like Frontignan's is far more than a business partnership: it is a process of co-creation with cinema professionals. We are pleased to contribute to enhancing the audience experience, in France and internationally," added Jean-François Gagnon, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Strong-MDI. The new Frontignan cinema thus establishes itself as a regional benchmark, both architecturally and technologically, placing projection quality at the very heart of the cinematic experience.
Timewaying, a pioneer in direct-view LED cinema technology, is proud to announce the installation of Hungary's first HeyLED cinema screen at Kultik Csepel in Budapest. This landmark project marks the arrival of a new cinematic era in Central and Eastern Europe, offering audiences an experience far beyond traditional projection. At Kultik Csepel, audiences will soon discover a completely new way of watching movies. Unlike projection, where light is cast onto a surface, the HeyLED screen is a self-emissive display-every pixel produces its own light. This makes shadows truly black, details crisp and lifelike, and bright scenes dazzling without compromise. Colours appear richer and closer to what filmmakers intended, opening the door to a level of realism rarely seen in the cinema. For 3D films, the difference is even more striking: images are sharper, more stable, and far more comfortable to watch, with ghosting greatly reduced and depth rendered with remarkable clarity. Measuring nearly nine meters in width and built from over two million LED pixels, the new screen will transform the Csepel auditorium into one of the most advanced moviegoing destinations in the region. The timing could not be better. With James Cameron's highly anticipated Avatar 3 soon to premiere, Kultik audiences will be among the first in Europe to experience the film in 3D on an LED cinema screen-immersed in a level of depth and realism that projection cannot match. "After experiencing the unique operating model and stunning image quality at Inspire Cinema in Romania, we realised how HeyLED can inject new vitality into

cinemas and unlock new possibilities. We are very excited to bring this technology to our audience at Kultik Csepel, where they will enjoy a truly unique experience watching Tron: Ares and Avatar 3D on an LED screen," said Kris, Managing Director of Kultik.
More than just a screen for movies, HeyLED opens up new opportunities for cinemas. Its brightness and stability mean it can support concerts, gaming tournaments, live broadcasts, and corporate events-even in daylight or ambient light conditions. For operators, this creates new revenue streams and for audiences, more reasons to return. The success of this project was made possible through close collaboration with Avian Solution, the systems integrator, where MD Andras played a pivotal role. Together, HeyLED and Avian provide a full turnover solution for cinemas across Central and Eastern Europe, covering product selection, installation, and after-sales support. The Romanian project served as a strong reference, paving the way for the Hungarian installation. "We are very impressed with the HeyLED product and the professionalism of their team," said business development manager Andras Avian Solution. "Our collaboration has been seamless, and we are confident that together we will bring even more cinema projects to life across the
region." The Hungarian installation follows successful deployments of HeyLED screens in Asia, the United States, Europe and the Middle East, where both exhibitors and audiences have praised the picture quality and reliability. The Csepel project, realised in partnership with Kultik Cinema Network and Magyar Telekom, underlines the growing momentum for HeyLED across Europe. "We are thrilled to partner with Kultik on this landmark project," said Andrew, CEO of Timewaying. Audiences in Hungary will soon experience cinema in its purest form-where darkness feels infinite, colours leap from the screen, and 3D becomes more immersive than ever before."
With Hungary's first LED cinema screen now underway, HeyLED reaffirms its commitment to transforming movie exhibition worldwide. More installations are already planned across Europe, Canada, the Middle East and Asia, shaping a future where projection is no longer the limit of the cinema experience.

The asset purchase does not include any personnel. Manufacturing and component assembly will continue with existing third-party OEMs, with MiT overseeing the process. President,

In an era when audiences crave more than just movies, Major Cineplex stands at the forefront of cinematic transformation. As Thailand’s largest and most influential cinema chain, the brand continues to redefine what going to the movies means—blending cutting-edge technology, sustainability, and digital intelligence to craft experiences that resonate far beyond the screen. With a forward-looking vision grounded in both innovation and environmental stewardship, Major Cineplex is shaping a new chapter in the global exhibition landscape, one that celebrates entertainment with conscience, creativity, and connection.
Imagine a cinema that does more than just show movies—where every visit feels like stepping into the future: Immersive, Seamless, and Sustainable. This vision is already becoming a reality, marking a transformation from traditional exhibition to holistic lifestyle destinations. Anchored by premium theatre formats, advanced digital platforms, and a deep-rooted commitment to environmental and social responsibility, the next generation of Major Cineplex theatres is being engineered to deliver happiness, impact, and long-term value.
For more than three decades, Major Cineplex has been Thailand’s leading exhibitor and a key player in Southeast Asia’s cinema landscape. Today, under its bold vision of ‘Innovative Cinema Lifestyle Leadership’, the group is evolving from a conventional cinema operator into a comprehensive entertainment ecosystem that integrates technology, comfort, and sustainability.
Premium formats continue to drive Major Cineplex’s strategy, combining spectacle, luxury, and family appeal to boost both admissions and average ticket price growth.

IMAX with Laser: Ten screens upgraded by September this year, offering razor-sharp imagery and immersive 12-channel sound.
4DX: Motion seating, wind, scent, and light effects that sync with every blockbuster moment.
ScreenX: A panoramic 270-degree experience that extends storytelling beyond the frame.
GLS (Giant Laser Screens): Expansive, laser-powered auditoriums that maximise brightness and colour vibrancy.
VIP Cinemas: High-yield auditoriums with premium dining, plush seating, and in-seat service.
Kids Cinemas: Now in 25 branches, these are dedicated to a rapidly growing family-first audience.
By continuing to innovate across formats, Major Cineplex ensures its theatres remain future-ready and differentiated within an increasingly competitive market.
GREEN CINEMA: ALIGNING WITH NET-ZERO
Sustainability is integral to Major Cineplex’s business model. Under the ‘Green Cinema, EarthFriendly Theatre’ vision, the group has taken measurable steps toward its Net-Zero goals:
WHICH OF MAJOR CINEPLEX’S PREMIUM FORMATS CURRENTLY DELIVER THE HIGHEST GROWTH IN AVERAGE TICKET PRICE (ATP)?
WHICH OF CINEPLEX’S PREMIUM FORMATS CURRENTLY DELIVER HIGHEST GROWTH IN AVERAGE TICKET PRICE (ATP)?
CURRENTLY TICKET
IMAX with Laser is now a key driver of overall Average Ticket Price (ATP) growth, outperforming standard formats. With the planned expansion to 10 locations by 2025, IMAX titles are poised to witness exceptional demand from both dedicated IMAX enthusiasts and general moviegoers. As we continue scaling our footprint to meet rising audience demand, IMAX has demonstrated strong market potential, delivering record-high revenues across multiple sites. Looking ahead to 2026, the launch of the IMAX Membership Program is set to further strengthen audience engagement and support the sustained growth of the IMAX consumer base.
WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOST EFFECTIVE ACTION MAJOR CINEPLEX HAS TAKEN TO SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE ITS CARBON EMISSION TOWARD ITS NET-ZERO GOAL?
At Major Cineplex, we have set an ambitious goal to transition all our cinemas to Laser Projector Systems by 2029. Over the next five years (2025 to 2029), we plan to replace every projector across our theatres in Thailand and international markets, with a total investment exceeding 1 billion Baht. Our journey began in 2024, and by 2025, we successfully upgraded 400 cinema screens to the Laser Projector System, a key milestone in our transformation. This initiative helps us eliminate the use of around 1,600 Xenon lamps each year, reduce energy consumption by approximately 4.95 million kWh annually, and cut carbon emissions by nearly 2.40 million kilograms of CO. Through this effort, we are proud to advance our vision of delivering world-class entertainment while upholding our commitment to environmental sustainability.
WHAT SPECIFIC CHALLENGE IS PREVENTING MAJOR CINEPLEX FROM IMMEDIATELY REACHING ITS GOAL OF 100% DIGITAL TRANSACTIONS?
At this stage, we are not facing any major challenges. Currently, 35% of our total ticket sales are generated through online channels, and we are well on track to achieve 100% digital sales through the Major Cineplex App by the end of 2026. Our digital-first strategy positions the app as a direct connection to our customers, enabling us to leverage first-party data, deliver personalised experiences, and drive effective upselling through ‘the MCOUPON system’. In the next phase, our focus will shift toward data-driven upselling of concessions to non-purchasing customers and implementing targeted campaigns, such as reactivation initiatives for users who have been inactive for 90 days. We also conduct Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) analysis to design offers that enhance profitability and foster long-term customer engagement, ensuring sustainable business growth beyond short-term gains.
Energy Efficiency: Over 400 laser projectors installed, reducing energy use and carbon emissions.
Smarter Logistics: Transitioning to 5G digital content delivery to eliminate hard drive transport and reduce carbon output.
Waste Reduction: Repurposing retired cinema screens into upcycled consumer products.
Few operators in Asia have integrated environmental accountability at this scale, making Major Cineplex a pioneer in balancing premium experiences with ecological responsibility.
With over 11 million app downloads and 3 million monthly active users, Major Cineplex has evolved into an app-first ecosystem. More than half of all admissions are now booked online, with a goal of 100% digital transactions in the near future.
Key digital initiatives include:
Smart Gate Ticketing and Self-Ordering Kiosks for frictionless entry and purchases.
In-App Food & Beverage Ordering, fully rolling out by Q1 2026 to enhance convenience. Personalised Loyalty Integration through flagship programs:

HOW IS DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION SHAPING CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT AND LOYALTY WITHIN THE MAJOR CINEPLEX ECOSYSTEM, AND HOW IS IT DIRECTLY CONTRIBUTING?
Digital transformation lies at the heart of how we strengthen customer engagement and loyalty. At Major Cineplex, we have seamlessly integrated our MPASS and MGEN loyalty programs into the MAJOR App, creating a unified, data-driven ecosystem that enables precise analysis and intelligent action on customer behaviour. Using AI-powered algorithms, we continuously learn from audience interactions to deliver personalised and segmented offers, ensuring that the right message reaches the right customer at the right time. For instance, we can identify users who watched Avatar 2 but have not yet purchased tickets for Avatar 3 and automatically deliver targeted weekend offers that are both relevant and timely. This level of automation allows us to execute thousands of micro-campaigns per film, supported by A/B testing to optimise performance across segments. Even the language and tone of communication are localised, Thai for domestic audiences and English for expatriates, further enhancing engagement and emotional connection. Ultimately, this AI-driven personalisation transforms the MAJOR App from a transactional tool into a predictive engagement platform that drives repeat visits, builds deeper loyalty, and delivers measurable revenue growth.
Our guiding principle is straightforward: Focus on the Core. We recognise that audiences visit cinemas to watch the movies they love and choose theatres they trust and find most convenient. Based on this understanding, our strategy centres on strengthening the fundamentals, enhancing customer satisfaction through continuous Kaizen-style improvements, and executing every initiative with discipline. We prioritise lean operations and profitable guest growth, focusing on quality admissions rather than volume alone. Our objective is to operate scalable and efficient cinemas that deliver stronger margins and sustainable profitability. The philosophy of 'Doing Simple Things
Exceptionally Well’ defines our approach to daily operations and long-term execution. At the same time, ESG remains an integral pillar of our business strategy. We are committed to developing a Green Cinema ecosystem by reducing energy consumption through Laser projection, advancing digital transformation, and embedding sustainability practices and Major Care Projects into every aspect of our operations and marketing.

M-Pass: Unlimited subscription program with over 400,000 active users.
MGEN: Membership exceeding three million users, enabling precision marketing and sponsorship opportunities.
This digital transformation strengthens guest engagement while opening new monetisation avenues through data-driven partnerships.
Through the Major Care Foundation, Major Cineplex continues to embed social value into its operations:
•Providing scholarships and education for underprivileged youth.
•Offering free screenings and entertainment for disadvantaged children and seniors.
•Running ‘Edutainment’ programs in rural schools to promote sustainability awareness.
•Creating inclusive opportunities for disabled individuals within its venues.
This community-centric approach not only enhances brand equity but also reinforces Major Cineplex’s role as a trusted cultural institution in Thailand.

Major Cineplex’s roadmap for the next decade is defined by four pillars:
Scale: Expanding toward 1,000 screens across ASEAN by 2027.
Sustainability: Deepening green initiatives to accelerate Net-Zero alignment.
Monetisation: Strengthening B2B partnerships and sponsorship integration.
Experience: Continuously elevating sites to global standards to ensure every visit is premium.
At its core, Major Cineplex remains committed to its mission — delivering customer happiness

through innovation, sustainability, and social purpose. With these principles guiding its growth, Major Cineplex is not only reaffirming its leadership in Thailand but also setting a global benchmark for the cinema of the future.

Tucked away in the bustling heart of Horsham, United Kingdom, a new kind of cinema has emerged-one that trades the impersonal feel of the multiplex for something far more intimate and inviting. Here, moviegoing isn't just about watching the latest release; it's about settling into a plush seat, enjoying a glass of wine or a fresh slice of pizza, and immersing yourself in the shared joy of storytelling. Blending film, food, and atmosphere, this venue has quickly become a favourite destination for locals and visitors who value comfort, community, and a little touch of indulgence in their leisure time.
In the heart of Piries Place, Horsham, sits a cinema that has quietly but confidently redefined what it means to go to the movies. Everyman Cinemas in Horsham is not your typical multiplex; it's a modern space where cinema feels intimate, indulgent, and refreshingly personal. For locals and visitors alike, it has become a place not just to watch films but to experience them.
Step into this boutique cinema and the difference is immediately clear.

Gone are the long rows of stiff seats and the rush of crowds scrambling for the best spot. In their place, you'll find an atmosphere that feels closer to a boutique lounge than a traditional cinema. Plush sofa seating, soft lighting, and
thoughtful design choices create an environment that invites audiences to settle in and relax. This laid-back approach reflects the broader ethos of Everyman: cinema should be comfortable, stylish, and personal. By stripping away the impersonal feel of mass-market theatres, the venue allows the focus to fall where it belongs-on enjoying the film and the company of those around you.
One of the charms of this cinema lies in its balance of programming. While the latest blockbusters are always part of the line-up, the cinema also makes space for independent films, documentaries, and cult classics. This variety ensures that there is something for everyone-from families looking for a fun night out to cinephiles in search of thought-provoking storytelling. For Horsham's community, this mix has been a welcome change. The cinema serves as both a place to catch global hits and a platform for films that might otherwise slip

under the radar. By doing so, Everyman supports not only mainstream entertainment but also the richness of independent cinema, widening horizons for audiences who want more than the obvious choices.
While films remain the heart of the experience, this cinema recognises that cinema is about more than what happens on screen. It's about the ritual-the anticipation before the lights dim, the conversations during the trailers, the shared excitement of the story unfolding. To complement that, the venue offers an on-site bar and café that elevates the experience far beyond the standard popcorn-andfizzy-drink model. Guests can enjoy artisan pizzas, sharing platters, indulgent desserts, or even a cocktail or glass of wine. What's more, the hospitality doesn't end

when the film begins; food and drinks can be brought directly into the auditorium, turning a film screening into a complete night out. This integration of hospitality into the cinema setting has become one of Everyman's hallmarks. It transforms the outing into something more relaxed and

sociable-an evening where you can unwind with friends or loved ones without the need to rush off elsewhere after the credits roll.
Since opening, this cinema has grown into more than a cinema-it has become a fixture of the town's social landscape. Located within the revitalised Piries Place development, the cinema contributes to the vibrancy of Horsham's town centre. It draws people not only to films but also to the surrounding shops, restaurants, and cafés, reinforcing the area's reputation as a lively destination. For locals, the venue offers a gathering space that feels special yet accessible. For visitors, it serves as a cultural highlight that adds another layer of attraction to the town. By merging entertainment with leisure and lifestyle, Everyman Horsham reflects the growing role of cinemas as community hubs rather than stand-alone outlets.
It's no secret that streaming platforms have reshaped how people consume films. With so much content available at the touch of a button, the challenge for
cinemas is to provide something that can't be replicated at home. Everyman Cinemas has leaned into this challenge by offering not just movies, but an atmosphere-an experience built on comfort, choice, and connection. Audiences no longer want to simply watch a film; they want to make an occasion of it. They want to feel indulged, to enjoy a sense of event. Everyman Horsham delivers on this by turning each screening into a curated experience: a cosy seat, a delicious meal, a favourite drink in hand, and the joy of sharing the moment with others.
The versatility of Everyman Cinemas in Horsham makes it appealing to a wide range of audiences. Couples might choose it for a date night, enjoying dinner and a film under one roof. Families can take advantage of the welcoming environment and variety of programming. Groups of friends might gather for a midweek escape or a weekend treat. Its charm lies in its ability to make the everyday feel special. A casual night at the movies becomes a memorable outing, and that is precisely what keeps people coming back.

As the cinema industry continues to evolve, venues like this highlight the importance of experience-led models. By combining high-quality film presentation with hospitality, comfort, and community engagement, they demonstrate a sustainable path forward for cinemas in a world where home entertainment is ever-present. Everyman Horsham isn't the biggest cinema in terms of scale, nor does it try to be. Its strength lies in being something different: a modern, intimate space where the focus is on the individual guest and the joy of cinema as a shared experience.
In just a short time, Everyman Horsham at Piries Place has become a beloved part of the local landscape, offering a refreshing alternative to the conventional cinema trip. With its comfortable seating, laid-back atmosphere, curated film choices, and emphasis on hospitality, it captures the essence of what modern audiences are looking for: experiences that feel both personal and memorable. For Horsham, it's a cultural landmark. For visitors, it's a reason to stay a little longer. And for the future of cinema, it's a shining example of how innovation and care can keep the magic of the big screen alive in the most human of ways.

Omniplex Cinema Sunderland is a 12-screen cinema in Sunderland city centre, surrounded by a great selection of local restaurants, shops and facilities, along with a wide array of the latest movies and

classic re-releases. It is the perfect place for movie lovers. This cinema also features assigned seating and wheelchair accessibility. A reimagined artistic and futuristic approach has made this cinema a truly embellishing centre for the wonderful patrons of Sunderland.
At the heart of the revamp is The Avenue, Omniplex's luxury cinema concept, making its British debut in Sunderland. Perched on the first floor, The Avenue features five boutique screens. Four of these are intimate private balcony areas-two of which overlook the massive

immersive MAXX screen-while the fifth is a more generous, 24-seat premium space for groups or romantic evenings.
Seating in The Avenue is refined: plush two-seater sofas, cosy armchairs, soft lighting, footstools, and elegant side tables. Meals and handcrafted cocktails are delivered directly to the seat-this is cinema dining raised to fine cuisine levels.
Omniplex Sunderland now operates 12 screens in total, all upgraded with fully reclined seating; among them, Screen 8 has been transformed into Britain's first full sofa-bed screen-a luxurious first for

the UK cinema landscape. Whether for date nights, family viewing, or plush solo trips, this screen offers mattress-style relaxation. The largest auditorium is the Omniplex MAXX screen, designed to deliver the premium large-format experience with floor-to-ceiling display, high-definition projection, immersive digital surround sound, and seats (including some sofabeds) that let viewers sink in.
According to Cinema Treasures, the overall capacity across the 12 screens is approximately 2,217 seats, with individual screens varying from about 270 to 101 seats. There are also VIP boxes seating 8 to 12 in some auditoriums, adding another layer of exclusivity.
It's not just about the films. Omniplex Sunderland has redefined the lobby and communal spaces to make them destinations in their own right. The lobby has been refashioned into a stylish lounge area, complete with cosy nooks and spaces to meet before or after a show. One standout feature: Joe's Food Truck, a 23-foot mobile Airstream-style trailer stationed inside the new lounge. It serves

giant 24-inch pizzas, crispy fried chicken, burgers, soft drinks, beers, and cocktails-perfect for grabbing a bite without leaving the cinema.
Sunderland's Omniplex has placed considerable emphasis on making

the venue accessible and comfortable for all. The Avenue concept features a lift and accessible toilets; all auditoriums offer recliner seating options; and there is ample space throughout for patrons using wheelchairs.
Parking has also been considered: the cinema is located in the city centre with access to multi-storey parking. In earlier planning and opening stages, Omniplex promised up to three hours' free parking when validated by the cinema staff. The transformation is part of a broader regeneration in Sunderland, aiming to elevate the leisure offer and encourage more footfall in the city centre. Local authorities have praised the renovation as among the most striking recent improvements, noting that Omniplex is ‘unrecognisable from the place it once was.’

To commemorate the reopening and upgrade, Omniplex held a celebratory weekend, during which tickets were available from £4 and classic, fan-favourite films such as Jaws, The Breakfast Club, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire were screened. Regular ticket pricing reflects the different experiences on offer. Standard screens have tiered prices depending on seat location; MAXX screenings are priced higher; and for The Avenue, there is a premium rate tied to the luxury and service level. While full current rates may vary, The Avenue tickets are set at £17.95.
Omniplex Sunderland's £4 million makeover isn't just a facelift-it represents a new standard for cinemas in the UK. By combining state-of-the-art projection, immersive sound, expansive screens, and a strong emphasis on comfort, service, and atmosphere, it has transformed into a destination well beyond just film viewing. Whether one seeks the plush intimacy of The Avenue, the novelty of a full sofa bed, or the grandeur of the MAXX screen, visitors have a range of options to suit how they choose to watch a film. For Sunderland, the revamped Omniplex is more than a leisure venue-it's a statement: that cinema can be as much about the experience as the movie, and that modern return-for-pleasure spaces can still surprise and delight.

The Regal Cinemas chain is one of the largest movie theatre brand in the United States with over 400 locations across 41 states, known for its high quality screens, plush seating, and premium viewing experiences. The Bronx location at Concourse Plaza, New York has been a staple in the community for years, providing residents with easy access to films without having to travel to Manhattan or other boroughs. While the theatre has undergone changes over the years, including renovations to keep up

The film industry was deeply engaged in a conflict between theatrical releases and Over-TheTop (OTT) streaming. Because the time between a film's cinema premiere and its digital debut had been drastically reduced to just four weeks, the very survival of theatres
and multiplexes was under threat. This situation urgently demanded the reinstatement of longer theatrical exclusivity periods.
This high-stakes panel discussion, titled ‘Reclaiming the Silver Screen: Why Would the Moviegoers Come
to Theatres When they Get it at Home After 4 Weeks?’ was moderated by Vanita Kohli Khandekar, Columnist and Writer & Contributing Editor, Business Standard. The session focused intensely on hard questions: How had these shrinking release windows already impacted theatrical revenues, audience loyalty, and long-term industry sustainability? Was a case made for regulatory intervention to protect the cinematic experience? As streaming giants tightened their dominance, the crucial debate was over how the theatrical industry could reinvent itself-and if it was succeeding in convincing audiences that some stories demanded the shared experience of leaving home.

Theatrical release windows are a problem across the world. A film could be released in a theatre or on OTT. Is OTT the issue? or is it the size of the market and the number of screens per city? Vanita started the discussion with a question, which is remarkably the core factor of the underlying issue. Rahul Puri, representing one of the emerging giants in the exhibition industry, thought-provokingly addressed the matter: "You cannot argue that a film that comes first to the theatrical window, then to the payper-view or the video on demand window, then to the satellite window, then to the terrestrial window is not going to make more money. Of course, it's going to make more money. This is in the producers' best interests because this window is created specifically for them. We don't do OTT shows in cinemas. We don't do reality shows in cinemas. We only do big-format films. That's the only thing that comes first to cinemas". Adding to the point, Vaishali's take revolved around the audience experience: "Being a regional player, for us, the regional languages are amazing in terms of the content, which is good and even if they know that after 4 weeks there is an OTT release, it's an experience that they come to. So I'm not finding it that difficult in my

city, as they would like to come to the cinema. It's for the experience of it. They don't care whether, after four weeks, you are going to get it in OTT or anything like that. It's an experience that they get only while watching on a big format screen". Echoing this statement, Tushar pointed out that post-COVID, the theatrical window collapsed in favour of OTT, and people could watch a newly released movie at home, whenever they want and wherever they want. He stated, "Why do we eat out when we have a kitchen at home? We need social experiences. The collective laughter or the horror that you experience in a cinema cannot be done. A joke lands much better when you're sitting with people. It gives you that and it takes away the inhibition and the problems and the escape that the cinema is known for".
Vanita emphasised that the film industry should not have tagged OTT service logos on their trailers. According to her, when she interviewed Amir, he stated that showing a Netflix or Prime logo in a theatre was telling the audience the film would soon come to them, which was considered a major disservice that half-killed the film's theatrical prospects. She stressed that a monetisation path should
have been followed so that money would flow into the ecosystem. Ultimately, she argued that a balance was needed where theatrical revenues, plus OTT, plus other revenues, could aid the overall ecosystem and its growth. Thomas agreed with the previous speaker that OTT was initially seen only as an alternative home entertainment (like satellite TV) when it launched in 2016. However, post-COVID-19, the direct-to-OTT release of some films collapsed the theatrical window, creating a critical problem.
He explained that this shift created a perception among audiences that they could simply wait to watch films at home, even though very few of India's 1,500 to 1,700 annual films actually went directly to streaming. Thomas stressed the need to change this perception and establish a strict window, citing the three-month international OTT window and the separate PVOD model (like Aamir Khan's approach). He concluded that connecting content creates urgency: if a film is good (citing examples like Uri), audiences will throng cinemas and not wait for OTT. The statement led to a question raised by Vanita: "Could more have been done to expand the market-to expand the pie-instead of worrying about Windows?" Answering this, Rahul Puri stated that he firmly

believed in expanding the number of cinema screens, arguing that increased attendance would be a knock-on effect. His primary point was that the lack of screen access in many parts of India required people to travel 30-40 kilometres, making home viewing (via TV and internet) a much easier and more convenient alternative. He then shifted focus, stating that in the metro markets, the industry is operating in an ‘attention economy.’ He emphasised that all forms of entertainment-film, TV, streaming (OTT)-are struggling to compete for the attention of the younger generation (15 and 16-yearolds) who spend 5.5 to 6 hours on their phones. Rahul concluded that success hinges on ‘grabbing that attention,’ noting that a great theatrical trailer is the key tool that pulls people in and creates a necessary ‘build-up’ for the film.
Vanita broadened the discussion by asking Rahul Dhyani about the potential in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, specifically inquiring if new cinema franchises were emerging in screendeprived areas. Dhyani explained that their model was built specifically for these markets. They found that many local entrepreneurs in these towns were eager to open their own cinemas, and the audience response was

strong. He noted favourable factors like good occupancy levels, effective ticket pricing strategies, and a positive repeat ratio in these towns, which contributed to a national occupancy of about 28% the previous year.
The panellists concluded that the true engine of growth was proper marketing and audience retention. For a film to become a super hit, it requires tactical marketing to drive a surge in admissions. They agreed that while the theatrical and OTT window was a factor, it was not the only one, as the success also hinged on the content's relevance to the region. Vaishali added that local marketing by theatre owners-like engaging media and newspapers to champion successful films-was valuable, asserting that even a patron's word-of-mouth publicity could be a powerful PR tool.
The core factors were identified as proper marketing and audience retention, which were vital for a movie to be declared a super hit. Vaishali had noted that even simple PR efforts by theatre owners, such as engaging local media, could be effective, a sentiment that extended to patrons providing word-of-mouth publicity.
Ultimately, the panel focused on the need to expand the market itself. Rahul Puri had argued that

increasing the number of screens across India, particularly in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, was paramount to make cinema viewing a convenient alternative to home entertainment. This was bolstered by Rahul Dhyani's experience of successfully creating franchises in these underserved markets. Vanita had stressed that a monetisation path was needed to ensure revenues from theatrical, OTT, and other sources flowed back into the ecosystem, while Thomas emphasised the necessity of changing the audience's perception that they could simply wait for the home release.
Despite the hurdles posed by the shrinking theatrical-to-OTT window and the fight for the younger generation's ‘attention economy,’ the consensus remained: the debate was not about one revenue stream replacing another, but about finding a balance that served all stakeholders. The theatrical experience, with its collective laughter and horror, was asserted to be an irreplaceable social experience that OTT simply could not replicate. Therefore, the panel's implied conclusion was that no matter the regulatory or economic obstacles ahead, the cinematic experience on the big screen would always be the first and most unique way to serve a film to an audience.

Once the cultural heartbeat of smalltown India, single-screen cinemas are now struggling under the weight of outdated infrastructure, high costs, and low attendance amidst the multiplex boom. The panel discussion aimed to address the central question of whether these theatres could be reinvented for the 21st century by exploring key solutions: implementing affordable digitisation for modern sound and projection; leveraging vernacular and regional content with flexible programming; improving the
audience experience with better food and beverage options; and seeking government incentives like GST relief, and developing new business models, including hybrid community spaces. The premise was that a strategic blend of technology, cultural relevance, and local entrepreneurship could make the single screen's revival not just possible, but potentially profitable.
In his opening remarks for the panel discussion ‘Bringing Back the Magic: Can India's Single-Screens Rise
Again?’ Akkshay began by establishing the importance of single-screen cinemas. He stated that they had historically been the ‘mother ship of the exhibition space,’ a format in which the industry started and which had been in play for over a hundred years. He acknowledged that a significant amount of change had occurred in exhibition, with many single-screens having given way to multiscreen properties or commercial spaces.
Daggubati Suresh Babu responded by directly addressing the core programming issue raised by Akkshay, articulating the frustration felt by single-screen owners. He stated that there was certainly the desire from the single-screen owner to play both major films, like the two big-ticket movies from the recent weekend, because the local audience wanted to see both.

However, he pointed out that the distributors were only willing to give them one film. Suresh Babu described this as an ‘ongoing battle,’ a struggle of ‘rich versus poor or big versus small,’ where the single screen was neither treated equally nor possessed the commercial strength to negotiate the terms it wished for. In stark contrast, a multiplex property could easily screen all available films, an opportunity denied to the single screen. He acknowledged that this disadvantage could theoretically be overcome if the producer/ distributor was willing to share the films, but he questioned whether they ever would. He added that distributors also refused to give single screens the same relative terms that a multiplex received, instead treating and demanding different, less favourable terms from the single screens. He concluded by asking the rhetorical question of whether they simply had to live with this disparity or choose to fight it, stressing that this was a fundamental problem that needed to be addressed, noting that some states had handled this issue well, while others had not.
Akkshay further elaborated on the single-screen advantage by highlighting the intrinsic difference in their location compared to

stereotypical national chain multiplexes. He pointed out that bigger players were ‘more often than not located on the second or third floor of a mall,’ whereas single screens were typically situated right in the middle of a very prime real estate space in every city they existed in. This crucial difference meant single-screens had direct, ground-floor access to a large number of people whose purpose was not necessarily buying a movie ticket. Chinmoy offered a direct, real-world example from his own experience, detailing how he leveraged the property's real estate during the two years of the COVID-19 lockdown. He first provided context, stating that his cinema, which had opened in 1971, was 54 years old and originally featured a traditional balcony and lower ‘popular’ seating area. During the shutdown, he took action: he extended the balcony and tilted the screen, effectively converting the seating into a single, modern, multiplex-style floor. This reconfiguration created a valuable lower-level space of approximately 7,500 square feet. He then converted this newly available space into a departmental store and other businesses. Chinmoy concluded by highlighting the success of this model: the rental income generated by that ground-floor store was, by itself, helping him to maintain the

operational expenses of the cinema hall. He suggested this was a viable solution-creating an additional revenue stream in the same building without having to alter the screen or projector-that other single-screen owners who had a balcony and a below-floor space could consider.
Akkshay shifted the discussion to the technological and data limitations faced by single screens, arguing that many core functions suffered because they lacked economies of scale and failed to integrate with digital solutions. He noted that the vital data needed for effective programming, which would allow them to gauge local audience demand and supply, was often held by third-party platforms like BookMyShow or by distributors, instead of being directly accessible to the cinema owners. Akkshay emphasised that properly leveraging this data could significantly improve the single-screen business model, leading to optimal programming, the execution of the right kind of marketing, and the setting of the right kind of ticket pricing. Kushal addressed the problem of underutilised screens, noting that single screens were only occupied 50 to 60 per cent of the year due to inconsistent film scheduling. He proposed that for the remaining time, owners should leverage data
on local population demographics to offer targeted, niche content beyond the standard releases, suggesting that specific communities could be offered their own dedicated screenings. This, he argued, would create a beneficial, untapped market for both exhibitors and producers. To solve the existing programming and ‘trust issues’ between industry parties, Kushal advocated for immediately adopting new AI-based technology that could provide accurate occupancy data, urging producers, distributors, and exhibitors to join hands in embracing these digital solutions.
Akkshay then pivoted the discussion to the remarkable success of the Kerala cinema business, suggesting it was the industry's current ‘sweet spot.’ He noted that the content being produced there was performing exceptionally well, regardless of the film's size or scale. Crucially, he emphasised that the quality of the exhibition infrastructure was ‘top-notch.’ Akkshay proposed that the entire panel could ‘really take inspiration’ from what had transpired in Kerala over the last decade, highlighting that the box office had grown ‘many manifold’ at a rapid pace. Suresh Shenoy

explained that Kerala's success was rooted in a decade-long shift in exhibition infrastructure, which saw the state's box office quadruple from 500 to nearly 2,000 crore. The key was massive single-screen conversion: most large, 1,000-seat halls were broken down into two or three smaller screens.
This multiscreen model provided vital programming flexibility and cost control, allowing exhibitors to screen the 200+ films released annually without missing potential hits. Beyond infrastructure, Shenoy credited the top-notch quality of Malayalam films post-COVID, noting that smaller, low-budget movies were now readily accepted by the audience in the 100 to 150 seat auditoriums. He also observed that audiences were now receptive to films with subtitles, enabling the exhibition of content from other South Indian languages. Shenoy concluded that the model for future profitability lay in converting single-screens to multiscreens for better programming and returns.
The Wish List
Akkshay pivoted to the regulatory issues in Tamil Nadu, a state known for rigid ticket price capping (160 under GST) and heavy government control. He highlighted the burden on exhibitors, who needed 10 to 20

annual NOCs to renew their licenses, contrasting this with the lack of progress on promised "onewindow clearances." Framing this against India's static screen count compared to China's, Akkshay asked Prem to identify the crucial changes exhibitors should lobby for in compliance and government rules to truly unlock the theatrical exhibition potential in India. Prem responded to Akkshay's query on government compliance, using Tamil Nadu as a reference point for positive policy changes.
He explained that Tamil Nadu's introduction of a ticket price cap was actually beneficial, as it made cinema more affordable and successfully drew in a lot of audience members. He also noted a recent helpful change: the cumbersome yearly license renewal process had been extended, and now required renewal only every three years. Prem strongly agreed that single-screens were the key solution to reaching a wider population. He referenced a recent statement by a prominent filmmaker that even the biggest blockbusters, like Baahubali or Dangal, only reached about 2% to 3% of the entire Indian population.
To successfully penetrate the populace in Tier 2, Tier 3 cities, and beyond, Prem asserted that the singlescreen was the necessary format.

The exhibition sector as a whole was under scrutiny, with people questioning if streaming platforms and other forms of recreation would leave enough room for cinema. However, he stressed that single-screens were especially ‘pinpointed at’ and had their future questioned, not just by external entities but by people within the entertainment ecosystem. Akkshay found this unfair, given that these properties had ‘survived 100 years.’ He posed a two-part question to the panellists: First, what caused this negative narrative to take hold, and second, how could the industry set it right? Vishek strongly countered the narrative that single-screens are dying, arguing they are ‘playing against the house’ due to systemic disadvantages. He detailed how single-screen owners are forced into unfavourable terms and programming choices-often denied the flexibility to screen multiple big films-which effectively directs their audience toward smaller, more flexible multiscreen properties. He insisted the real question should be, ‘Are theatres making money?’ since even multiplex chains face losses.
Vishek argued the problem was fundamentally about content, not the single-screen itself. He cited the
massive success of films like Gadar 2, Jawan, and Pathaan to prove that single-screens consistently ‘fire and deliver numbers’ whenever good content is available. He underscored the irony that India is a grossly underscreened market yet constantly questions the format's survival. He concluded that OTT platforms were allies, not competitors, as they increased awareness of diverse regional content like Malayalam cinema. The actual issues were content quality and pricing, and solving these could easily allow India to sustain 30,000 to 40,000 screens.
The panel concluded that the challenge facing single-screens is systemic but solvable, requiring a multi-pronged approach to overcome the unequal commercial terms and programming limitations imposed by the industry. The primary path to reinvention involves leveraging prime real estate for ancillary income, as demonstrated by Chinmoy's retail conversion and adopting the Kerala Blueprint of converting large halls into smaller, flexible multiscreen to maximise revenue, as explained by Suresh Shenoy. Crucially, the industry must prioritise data adoption and AI-based technology to enable optimal programming of diverse regional content, a solution Vishek reinforced by proving that single- screens consistently ‘fire’ when good content is available. Ultimately, the panellists agreed that fixing issues related to content and pricing, coupled with lobbying for easier government compliance, is the key to unlocking the massive, untapped potential of the Indian theatrical exhibition market.
