Cinépolis India, the country's first international cinema exhibitor, has announced the launch of Foovies, a new initiative that combines food and movies into a single integrated experience. The concept marks a significant shift in how the brand positions cinemas, not just as film venues but as destinations where dining and entertainment converge. Traditionally, an evening out often included dinner followed by a movie. With Foovies, Cinépolis merges those two activities, offering audiences freshly prepared meals served directly in-theatre. The initiative expands cinema dining beyond standard concessions, making food part of the entertainment experience rather than an add-on.
The menu under Foovies introduces a wide selection of options beyond popcorn and soft drinks. Guests can choose from pizzas, wraps, nachos, fries, samosas, and in-house desserts, all prepared fresh.
By offering an extensive menu, Cinépolis aims to shift consumer perception of cinema food while positioning its theatres as lifestyle destinations. To promote Foovies, Cinépolis has rolled out offers such as Foovies25, enabling customers to receive 25 per cent off on food purchases and movie tickets. Club Cinépolis members can also earn and redeem loyalty points on their
food and beverage spends, integrating the initiative with the company's existing rewards program. Devang Sampat, MD of Cinépolis India stated, "At Cinépolis, we don't just showcase films, we craft experiences. Foovies is our bold step to make every movie visit an immersive lifestyle indulgence, blending the joy of cinema with the comfort of world-class food."
Cinépolis entered India in 2009 and has since introduced multiple innovations, including luxury recliners, immersive sound and projection technologies, and its signature global popcorn standard. The launch of Foovies takes this innovation further by repositioning theatres as complete lifestyle destinations. For the retail industry, this move highlights how cinema operators are adapting to changing consumer expectations by blending hospitality with entertainment to drive higher footfalls and customer engagement. By merging two of India's most popular pastimes, food and film, Cinépolis is seeking to expand the value proposition of multiplexes and redefine what a movie night means for customers. The initiative reflects a broader trend in the retail and entertainment sector toward experiential consumption, where dining, leisure, and lifestyle services come together under one space.
Galalite Screens, the global leader in cinema screen technology, proudly announced the extension of its Title Sponsorship of Big Cine Expo, South Asia's largest cinema exhibition convention, for the next five years. This continued partnership reflects Galalite's unwavering commitment to innovation and growth within the cinema industry. Speaking on the occasion, Yusuf Galabhaiwala, Director of Operations at Galalite Screens, said: "Big Cine Expo has always been a platform for us to share our passion for cinema innovation with the industry. Extending our partnership as Title Sponsor for another five years reflects our deeprooted commitment to supporting cinema exhibition in India and beyond. With the launch of Mirage XDL 1.9 and 2.3, we are not just delivering screens - we are delivering the future of cinema." Adding to this, Siranush Whyte, General Manager at Galalite Screens, said: "At Galalite, every innovation is driven by one visionto redefine how stories are experienced on the big screen.

The South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (SIFCC), expressed its heartfelt gratitude to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin for accepting its request to reduce the Local Body Entertainment Tax on films from 8% to 4%. In a statement, SIFCC said that the reduction of the Local Body Entertainment Tax had long been a consistent plea from the Tamil film industry and that it took the initiative to bring this matter to the attention of the Tamil Nadu government. Pointing out that the Chief Minister had now reduced the tax from 8% to 4%, the SIFCC said that it sincerely thanked Chief Minister MK Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin,
and Minister for Information and Publicity MP Saminathan. "This decision by the Tamil Nadu Government stands as a great boon to the Tamil film industry. There is no doubt that this move will further the growth and strengthen the position of Tamil cinema. Therefore, once again, on behalf of the entire Tamil film industry, we extend our sincere thanks to the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu," it said. The decision to slash the Local Body Entertainment Tax, which comes in response to long-standing appeals from the film fraternity, has been widely welcomed by producers, distributors, and industry bodies. Each year, more than 1,000 films are released across Tamil Nadu, and the 8% entertainment tax, added on top of the GST, was often cited as a burden, especially for small and medium-budget films. Members of the industry have repeatedly pointed out that the high tax structure was adversely affecting their ability to recover production and distribution costs, particularly in the case of low-budget ventures. Now, the state government's move to halve the tax is being hailed as a timely relief. The Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI) has also expressed its gratitude to the CM for heeding the industry's plea. In a statement, FEFSI said that the reduction would help revive the struggling sector and provide muchneeded encouragement to smaller filmmakers. However, theatre owners have expressed a more measured response.
Tirupur Subramaniam, a leading distributor, theatre owner, and former president of the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners and Exhibitors' Association, welcomed the government's intent but clarified that the reduction in entertainment tax would not lead to any cut in ticket price.
Move over, expensive subscriptions. Gen Z is heading back to theatres. And this time, they're being greeted with more than just big-screen thrills. With offers like free popcorn for students, weekly snack deals, and curated experiences, cinema chains are reimagining the moviegoing experience for a younger, valueconscious audience. Leading this shift is Miraj Cinemas, which recently introduced 'Youth Movie Munch', a simple yet smart offer that gives any student a free small popcorn on showing their college ID. No codes. No gimmicks. Just a good old campus perk that makes a movie night out a little more fun (and a little saving also).
Bhuvanesh Mendiratta, MD, Miraj Entertainment, says, "Today's students are looking for affordable indulgences. We're building not just footfalls, but loyalty, by turning cinema visits into micro-celebrations. Small gestures like free popcorn go a long way." This offer complements another hit from the national multiplex chain, 'Tasty Tuesday', where moviegoers can grab tickets for blockbuster movies and unbeatable snack offers, starting at INR 99/- at select locations. These midweek crowdpullers are helping cinemas tap into weekday slack, while building a connection with the price-sensitive Gen Z segment that still loves going
out, just more selectively. It's part of a larger trend: Indian multiplexes, particularly in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, are turning attention back to real-world engagement. From youthspecific campaigns and college tieups to hyperlocal promotions, the focus is shifting from just screen content to social value. What used to be a weekend-only family affair is now a weekday student escape, one small popcorn at a time.

designed to deliver an elevated and immersive movie-watching experience. With a total seating capacity of 563, what truly sets this cinema apart in the regional landscape is its seat configuration: more than 54% of the seats are recliners. This makes it one of the few multiplexes in Bihar to offer such a high proportion of luxury seating, giving patrons the choice to enjoy their films in unmatched comfort. The auditorium design is focused on audience experience, integrating ergonomic layouts, plush upholstery, and ample legroom. Customers can choose between standard, executive premium, and recliner seating, allowing flexibility in pricing and comfort levels. Each screen is equipped with Dolby 7.1 surround sound and 2K Laser Projection technology, ensuring stunning visuals and crystal-clear soundscapes-key elements in delivering a truly cinematic experience.

attract a diverse audience-from families and working professionals to students and movie buffs-by offering world-class facilities at reasonable prices. These initiatives are designed to encourage repeat visits and build long-term relationships with customers. Combined with the chain's renowned food and beverage selection, which includes both regional favourites and global snacks, Cinépolis ensures that every visit is a complete entertainment outing.
The Patna expansion is part of Cinépolis India's larger strategy to penetrate underserved but high-potential markets. While metros have long been saturated with luxury cinema experiences, it is cities like Patna-fast-growing, youthful, and culturally vibrant-that represent the next big growth frontier for the cinema industry. Cinépolis has been quick to recognise the demand for premium cinema experiences in these regions and has tailored its strategy accordingly. By incorporating high-end design, cutting-edge technology, and flexible pricing, the company is successfully capturing a wide spectrum of audience segments. The choice of Patna also reflects a deeper understanding of evolving urban centres in India. With its expanding middle class, increasing infrastructure investment, and rising consumer aspirations, Bihar's capital city is perfectly positioned to benefit from a world-class entertainment destination like Cinépolis.
With each new opening, Cinépolis further strengthens its reputation as a leader in innovation and customer experience. The company has continuously introduced global benchmarks to Indian audiences, be it with IMAX, 4DX, VIP recliner cinemas, or gourmet dining experiences inside theatres. Its Indian operations have become a blueprint for global success, blending local sensibilities with international best practices. The launch in Patna is yet another step forward in this journey, exemplifying how Cinépolis is redefining cinema in India by making it more inclusive, experiential, and value-driven.
Looking Ahead...
As Cinépolis continues its aggressive expansion into Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets, Patna's Gravity Mall multiplex is a strong indication of what the future holds. With plans to open more cinemas across Eastern India in the coming years, the brand is not just growing its footprint but also elevating the standards of regional cinema infrastructure.
In conclusion, the launch of Cinépolis Gravity Mall in Patna is more than just a business expansion-it's a cultural statement. It signals a new era for cinema in Bihar and Eastern India, where audiences no longer need to compromise on quality for accessibility. With its commitment to technology, comfort, and value, Cinépolis is setting the stage for a brighter, more cinematic future for all.
What if premium cinema wasn't just for big cities but for every town with a dream of the big screen?
This bold vision sparked a new cinema chain-one that raced forward with a smart franchise-first model, planting cutting-edge projection, immersive sound, and luxurious seating across under-represented markets. In an exclusive conversation with TheatreWorld, the founders of Connplex, Rahul Dhyani and Anish Patel, revealed how this rapid expansion combines agile operations with a consistent premium experience to rewrite the rules of Indian cinema.
Connplex promotes itself as India's fastest-growing smart luxury cinema chain. How did you define and intentionally pursue this brand positioning?
At Connplex, we positioned ourselves as India's fastest-growing smart luxury cinema chain by addressing two big gaps- luxury beyond metros and affordable accessibility. We intentionally pursued this by expanding smartly into emerging cities through our scalable franchise model, delivering premium experiences with luxurious recliners, advanced projection, and immersive Dolby surround sound-all at prices that remain truly affordable. We harness smart technology and agile operations to drive growth beyond traditional cinema models.
Could you tell us where, when, and how the idea of Connplex Cinemas ignited?
For both of us, cinema has always been more than just entertainment -
it is an experience, a dream, and a universal language of storytelling. The idea of Connplex Cinemas was born out of this shared passion and the realisation that, while India is one of the largest film-loving nations, premium cinema experiences were still limited to major cities and metropolitan areas. We asked ourselves – why should only a handful of cities enjoy luxury recliners, gourmet snacks, and world-class sound and projection? Why not every town, every community? That's where the vision of Connplex took shape: to redefine movie-watching across India by blending luxury with affordability.
What is the long-term vision for Connplex? Where do you see the brand in the next 5-10 years?
At Connplex, our long-term vision is to redefine moviegoing as an
extraordinary experience, not just an outing. Over the next 5-10 years, we envision Connplex as one of the most beloved and rapidly expanding cinema brands in India, with a strong presence across multiple states and cities. Our focus is not only on expanding numbers but also on setting new benchmarks in technology, comfort, and hospitality. With our signature formats- Luxuriance, Signature, and Express - we are building a future where audiences enjoy world-class cinemas that feel both aspirational and welcoming.
With 30+ franchises and 300+ screens pan-India, what's your model for evaluating and selecting new franchise partners?
At Connplex Cinemas, we believe that expansion is not just about adding numbers but about building the right partnerships. Our evaluation model for new franchise partners goes beyond financial capability - we look for vision alignment, passion for cinema, and a long-term commitment to redefining the moviegoing experience. We seek out locationsboth emerging and established-that have the potential to blossom into true cultural hubs through cinema, and look for partners who deeply resonate with our values of innovation, exceptional hospitality, and genuine customer delight; at the same time, we are drawn to collaborators eager to grow with us over the long haul, nurturing scalability and shared brandbuilding through the years.
What challenges and lessons have arisen when scaling across diverse Indian markets?
Scaling across diverse Indian markets has been both exciting and challenging. Each region in India carries its own cultural pulse, viewing preferences, and cinema-
Since its inception, Connplex Vadodara has rapidly become one of the most loved and preferred cinemas in the city. Audiences have embraced it not just as a movie theatre but as a destination where stories come alive in the most immersive way possible. With SPECTRA-X, luxurious recliner seating, cutting-edge 2K projection, and Dolby surround sound, Connplex Vadodara has set new benchmarks for comfort and cinematic quality. In a very short span of time, it has established itself as the audience's favourite entertainment hub, bringing people together to celebrate stories, emotions, and the joy of cinema. Its blend of technology, hospitality, and thoughtful design has made every screening an experience to remember.
Receiving the award for Best Cinema of India at Big Cine Expo is not just a recognition of infrastructure, but of vision. It acknowledges Connplex's mission to take world-class cinematic experiences beyond metro cities, making high-quality entertainment accessible to growing markets across India.
going habits. For us at Connplex, the biggest challenge has been ensuring that while we bring a standardised world-class cinema experience, we also respect and adapt to local sensibilities. For example, language preferences vary dramatically - what works in Gujarat may not necessarily resonate in Andhra Pradesh or Bihar. Similarly, audience expectations around food & beverage, pricing, and even show timings can differ. The lesson we've learnt is simple but powerful: India is not one market, it's many markets stitched together. This balance has enabled us to win over audiences in
new markets quickly. Ultimately, the biggest takeaway is that listening to our audiences and staying agile is key. Every new city teaches us something, and that learning becomes the foundation for the next expansion.
What ‘smart’ or ‘tech-driven’ features truly differentiate the Connplex experience?
At Connplex, every detail is carefully designed to redefine the moviegoing journey with comfort, technology, and hospitality at its heart. If you ask what makes us truly smart and different? The
answer lies in what we offer; we design every Connplex journey to be effortlessly luxurious-from instant e-ticketing and QR entry that wipe out long queues, to valet parking and inviting lounges that put guests at ease before the film even begins. Inside, we elevate comfort with thoughtfully appointed seating-each seat boasts its own armrests, food tray, and focus light-while those seeking extra indulgence can stretch out in couple loungers, recliner sofas, or podiumstyle VIP chairs with unbeatable viewing angles. Every show dazzles through immersive Dolby Surround Sound, SpectraX LED screens, and 2K & 3D projection-delivering sharp visuals, booming sound, and electrifying immersion.
How do you balance implementing cutting-edge features with maintaining costefficiency and consistent quality across sites?
For us at Connplex, innovation isn't about chasing trends - it's about creating smarter cinemas. Every decision, from seating design to energy use, is built around two principles: elevating the audience experience and ensuring long-term efficiency. Our three formatsLuxuriance, Signature, and Expressgive us the flexibility to adapt to any market without compromising on quality. By blending comfort with technology and sustainability with scalability, Connplex is shaping a cinema model that's built not just for today's audiences, but for the future of entertainment.
What marketing tactics (digital, social, and partnerships) have driven your strongest customer growth and retention?
At Connplex Cinemas, our strongest customer growth and retention come from a digital-first strategy, amplified by social storytelling and
Nestled in Sri Square Mall, Connplex’s Tadepalligudem outlet brings together premium cinematic comfort and convenient accessibility for the region. Patrons can enjoy hallmark features—including F&B services and seamless mobile ticketing—in a refined environment that reflects Connplex’s signature blend of latest technology and hospitality. With an added touch to the design, the property touches the elegance and aesthetics of modernity, dedicated sections to showcase the new releases- the lobby and the hallway itself become a photo station. Local audience praise the ambience and overall experience. The majority highlight the superior setting and cinematic presentation as key strengths. The cinema itself made a statement on how experience matters even in underserved regions. In essence, the Tadepalligudem Connplex outlet lives up to the brand’s mission of delivering a world-class, luxury cinema experience to towns beyond the metropolitan mainstream—evident in its design, amenities, and reception.
smart partnerships. On the digital front, our focus is twofold - building audience connect and strengthening investor confidence. For audiences, our quirky campaigns and trending content spark conversations, keep us top of mind, and nurture longterm loyalty. For investors, the digital ecosystem works as a leadgeneration and trust-building engine - every campaign is measurable, scalable, and cost-efficient, giving us not just visibility but a consistent flow of qualified leads, transparent insights, and predictable growth opportunities. Our social media presence is built around creating conversations, not just promotions.
In short, our growth has come from one simple formula: digital that delights audiences and assures investors, social media that builds community, and partnerships that create lasting value.
In a competitive market with other chains around, what have you found to be Connplex's strongest competitive advantages? Safety, hygiene, food quality, and seat comforthow do you ensure consistency across all franchise locations? What sets Connplex apart is our focus on a space that was long underserved in India. While the big
names have built their dominance in metros, we've made it our mission to bring world-class cinema experiences to towns where aspiration runs high but access is limited. For us, cinema is not just entertainment; it's aspiration, identity, and access. Our core advantage is built on three pillars: a smart expansion model that allows us to scale rapidly into underserved markets where others hesitate; delivering a premium yet affordable cinema experience-replete with luxurious seating, advanced sound systems, and state-of-the-art projection-so that audiences never feel short-changed due to geography; and harmonising local relevance with national brand standards, ensuring both consistent reliability and the capability to scale efficiently across regions. But expansion means nothing without consistency. And that's where we're uncompromising. As directors, our philosophy is simple: ‘No Matter
Which Connplex You Walk Into, The Experience Should Feel The Best, Premium, Safe, and Memorable.’ What notable challenges did you face during expansion?
Every expansion comes with its own challenges. For us, navigating regulatory clearances and licensing was like the first act - necessary but often time-consuming. The real drama, however, usually unfolded in real estate - finding the right location that isn't just commercially viable, but also resonates with the pulse of the local community. Adding to that, India's diversity means audience preferences vary widely; what excites a cinephile in Patna may not be what draws crowds in Vadodara. These hurdles, though demanding, are what sharpen our vision and fuel our determination to keep expanding smarter and stronger. But these aren't setbacks - they're part of our story. Every challenge pushes us to
adapt smarter, design cinemas that feel local yet world-class, and refine a model that blends compliance, convenience, and cultural connect. Could Connplex explore alternate entertainment offerings?
Yes, very soon! At Connplex, we see ourselves not just as a cinema chain, but as a complete entertainment ecosystem. Movies will always be at our core, but the future of Connplex is about offering much more than that. With GamePlex by Connplex, we are bringing immersive arcade and gaming experiences that turn every visit into a day-out destination for families, friends, and young audiences. Alongside this, StudioX by Connplex is shaping up as our dedicated distribution and content platform, creating new opportunities for regional, indie, and mainstream creators to reach audiences across India. We are also
collaborating with a wide range of live events and cultural showcases to keep Connplex buzzing with energy even beyond film screenings. Through group bookings and private screenings, Connplex goes beyond movies - offering spaces for celebrations, corporate events, and community experiences, all under one roof.
How would you describe the core values and culture of Connplex as a company and as a cinema experience?

onboarding and operating a new location?
At Connplex Cinemas, we don't just hand over a franchise - we build a partnership. When a new location comes on board, our priority is to make the journey smooth, exciting, and future-ready. That means we train the entire team to deliver not just great service, but memorable experiences that keep audiences coming back. We back this with smart technology, so that our partners can focus on growth while the systems take care of efficiency. But what truly makes the difference is the constant guidance and connection. Even after the grand opening, our team stays by the partner's side, ensuring every show runs like clockwork and every campaign creates buzz.
As a founder, which milestone or location stands out as the biggest turning point or proof of concept for Connplex?
For us, the biggest turning point wasn't tied to a single location, but to the moment we saw audiences in smaller towns embrace Connplex with the same excitement and pride as big cities. That was the real proof of concept - when people walked in, experienced the comfort, the technology, the service, and said,
Bihar, followed by a few screens in Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana, through a franchisee model. Of which, 63 screens are operated through the FOFO model (franchise owned, franchise operated) and the remaining 3 via the FOCO model (franchise owned, company operated).
At Connplex, growth isn't just about numbers - it's about how cinema culture is reaching and thriving in the untapped regions of India. The recent IPO listing in the entertainment space is a clear reflection of the strong confidence both investors and audiences have in this industry. It reaffirms that the market is evolving, ripe for
‘This feels world-class.’ That validation shows us we're on the right path. For us, it's never just about opening cinemas - it's about reshaping how communities perceive entertainment and proving that premium experiences can belong everywhere. The continuous flow of overwhelming Google reviews and feedback from our audiences strengthens this belief every day - because nothing speaks louder than the love and trust of our stakeholders.
What's the one message or advice that you could put forth to new cinema owners?
Our one piece of advice to new cinema owners would be this - don't just build a cinema, build an experience. Audiences today don't come only for a movie; they come for a memory. Every detail mattersfrom the seats they sink into, to the sound that surrounds them, to the warmth of service they receive. Focus on creating that wow moment every time a guest walks in, and the numbers will naturally follow. At Connplex, we always say - if you give your audience a reason to come once, they'll return a hundred times. Cinema is not just about screens, it's about stories - and that includes the story of your brand.
innovation, and ready to embrace fresh, scalable models like Connplex. Their future lies in bridging the gap between metropolitan areas and emerging cities, bringing premium cinematic experiences and technology to places where people still travel miles to watch a film. With their unique franchise-first model and a strong focus on sustainable expansion, we're ensuring that every new Connplex isn't just a cinema, but a cultural hub. The IPO success story proves one thing: cinema is here to stay, evolving with time. And Connplex stands at the very heart of this evolution - innovating, expanding, and reshaping the way India experiences movies.
In the mid-nineties, out of Bangalore, I was touring South India, especially Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, where cinemas were still being built and hence prospective customers for my acoustical panels. Bag of samples slung on my shoulder, I would visit cinemas under construction and solicit business. During such rounds, in the Hyderabad region, I first heard of a Mumbai-based cinema designer and acoustical consultant, Jal P Mistry. Cinema owners used to speak of him in awe, for he had a fearsome reputation of being strict with design and the products being used. He also had a temper that brooked no nonsense. Nervous as I was to meet such a towering personality, secretly I aspired to show him my

acoustical panels and seek his approval to use them in his cinema design. In reality, I was losing business as he used to recommend gypsum tiles with a certain percentage of perforations backed by glasswool.
As synchronicity would have it, I arrived at a construction site in Kukatpally (then outside Hyderabad) just as Jal Mistry was leaving. Someone introduced me, and very condescendingly, he asked me to show samples quickly, as he was
Jal uncle was our mentor and our inspiration, who kept us motivated to work in an honest and hardworking way. Just like how Jal uncle was. He will be greatly missed. His knowledge and his honesty are unparalleled in the industry. Hope he rests in peace. We will always miss him. And the loss of Jal uncle is a great loss to the industry as well as everybody in the Pen Workers.

late for his flight to Mumbai. With shaking hands, I showed what I had. He briefly studied them and asked me to have some sent to his Mumbai office. And the rest was history! It was the beginning of a mentorship that sadly ended when he passed away recently due to agerelated ailments. The thirty-year association (1995-2025) was one of not only mentorship but friendship, as he took a liking to the highquality panels that I was manufacturing, and he lamented the fact that he was looking for such panels but found none. He took a liking to me, too, as our principles and passions coincided.
Jal Mistry was a strict disciplinarian, an upright Parsi, for whom integrity and fidelity were paramount. Passionate about his craft, he would shout down his customers, cinema owners from whom he earned a fee, if he felt they had erred. In a way, he was a terror for owners, contractors and vendors, and so his designed cinemas stood out for their quality of experience to viewing patrons. He was an eponymous brand. In the late nineties and through the noughties, when India was overtaken by the multiplex boom, Jal Mistry was besieged with work. His first-floor apartment at Galactica in Lokhandwala, Andheri West, was a beehive of activity, frequented by the who's who of the cinema exhibition industry. His intimate knowledge of the science, focus of purpose and fierce upholding of principles endeared him to all.
Whenever I rang the bell of his apartment, I would stand in trepidation, apprehensive of what he would volley at me, so exacting was his approach to the design and execution of cinema interiors. I would try to charm my way through, and that was a game,
He has been exceptional in giving ideas for conversions of theatres to the best of standards, for ideal projection conversions. I was very happy with his suggestions and the way he went about doing his modifications... they were very apt. Almost all our works were done by him. His choice of equipment for projection was very apt and always to the best of standards. I was always thrilled to see the quality that was coming out of his design of the theatres. He will always be a visionary.

I guess, we both played. In hindsight, it helped me improve and innovate on acoustical panels that included the invention of Mat, Strand Burl and other products. Remarkable too was his willingness to embrace rapid changes in both cinema technology and design tools. Well into his seventies, he self-learnt AutoCAD and Revit for drawings, as well as Ease acoustical modelling software for simulation and auralization. He was receptive to new ideas and not just active but ever willing to travel, doing day trips or overnighters to remote locations from Mumbai. Along with Prof. BS Ramakrishna at Bangalore and Uma Shankar Bhargav at Delhi, I can say my knowledge of architectural acoustics and the industry was shaped by these three stalwarts. Each was old-school, strong with the fundamentals of the science and conviction of their design. Many landmarks around the country are testimony to an era
gone by. Many of us, like Anmol Kashmiri of Pen Workers Seating, Ramakrishna of Pulz Audio, and Eranna of Era Architects, continue his legacy for cinema and auditorium design.
I happened to meet Jal Mistry at his apartment in Galactica recently. He was alone in his apartment with an attendant. Bedridden as time had taken its toll. I was meeting him after many years on an intuition that I must meet my mentor. He barely recognised me, but then he did and clasped my hand tightly to whisper, 'Thank you'. Immediately, I spluttered, 'No, I must thank you for all that you did for me'. With tears rolling, we parted. It was synchronicity again at play, as in the beginning as in the end. A couple of weeks later, his nephew Neville messaged me about his passing away. If 'In pursuit of excellence' were the title of a book, then Jal Mistry embodied it as a living reality. That's my enduring memory as I salute my hero...

Cinema
The architectural brilliance of QLA Cinema is credited to Silhouette The Design Studio, a cutting-edge design firm known for pushing the boundaries of form and function. Under the creative leadership of Sunil Kaushik, the studio envisioned QLA as a space that doesn't just house cinema, but celebrates it.
Sunil Kaushik's approach is rooted in the belief that design should inspire emotion. At QLA, this philosophy manifests in a vibrant yet harmonious palette, striking yet understated lighting, and an organic flow of spaces that enhance the patron's journey. The interiors are a carefully orchestrated mix of textures, colours, and materialsmodern, but never cold; luxurious, yet approachable. Each detail, from the choice of upholstery to the custom lighting fixtures, has been thoughtfully curated to contribute to a singular aesthetic story.
The use of locally inspired motifs and playful design elements pays homage to Gurugram's youthful energy and cosmopolitan flair. It's a theatre designed not just to be seen but to be experienced.
The design studio's decision to include pops of colour, earthy undertones, and clean, flowing lines results in a space that is both dynamic and timeless.
"The Premium Boutique QLA Cinema has been artfully designed, with every detail curated to optimise space and evoke a grand ambience. The auditoriums have been crafted to embody a seamless harmony of refined aesthetics, cuttingedge technology, and supreme comfort."
– Sunil Kaushik, Principal Architect - Silhouette The Design Studio
QLA Cinema is more than a building with screens-it is a social space crafted for the community. From families seeking weekend entertainment to professionals catching a late-night premiere, QLA caters to every demographic without losing its sense of exclusivity. Its curated programming also reflects this inclusive vision.
While it plays mainstream films, it also provides a platform for regional cinema, indie films, and community screenings, giving voice to diverse storytelling. The cinema regularly hosts special events, children's movie days, and themed screenings, further establishing itself as a community gathering place.
In addition, the in-house concession offerings at QLA are a cut above. Gourmet snacks, freshly brewed beverages, and premium service ensure that patrons enjoy more
than just a film-they enjoy a holistic experience.
What truly sets QLA Cinema apart is its ability to strike a fine balance: luxurious without being alienating, stylish without sacrificing warmth, and innovative without overshadowing the core experience of movie watching. It is a place where every visit feels curated, personal, and memorable. In a city like Gurugram, where fast-paced urban life often overshadows meaningful leisure, QLA Cinema brings back the joy of going out to the movies. It invites you not just to watch, but to engage, to connect, and to unwind. As the cinematic landscape continues to evolve, QLA Cinema stands as a shining example of what the future of cinema should look and feel like: immersive, thoughtful, and joyfully human. unlike traditional multiplexes where the magic fades once the credits roll, Ruby ensures the enchantment lingers.

"This was a challenging site, and we had to build the cinema on the level, which is typically used for banquets. The proportion and width-to-length ratio were not proper, and the height was very low. So, we had to give the maximum screen size; in doing that, we changed the direction of the screen towards the longer side of the rectangle and by using the short-throw projector, we made the room look as wide as possible, and we just had two rows of seats. By doing so, we can provide patrons with the most immersive screen size and experience. So, just doing two rows of the seat, and people can be seated comfortably and watch the movie in an almost immersive way, which is the idea, the projector is in the ceiling. So, it is a very compact, luxurious cinema. The best thing was to create a cinema where it was not possible."
– Eranna Yekbote,
Chief Architect, Era Architects
interiors radiate warmth, sophistication, and understated elegance. From thoughtfully placed art pieces to architectural curves and textures, and a jewel-toned palette, the space immediately puts guests at ease. The interiors are wrapped in plush textures and soft lighting. Each screening hall features recliner-only layouts, ensuring spacious comfort and privacy for every guest, with Recliners India providing the premium seating.
The project was promoted and invested in by Jabalpur Entertainment Complexes. The architectural vision was brought to life by Era Architects. Other key contributors include Welspun for the carpet, Electrorama for the sound system, Jaguar Lighting for the lighting, Project Concepts for acoustical materials, and UFO Moviez as the server integrator. While installing 2K CHRISTIE projector, which was high in cost, presented a challenge; it was a necessary investment to create the premium luxury cinema that is Ruby Movie Magic.
Ruby Movie Magic is more than just a cinema; it's a 'Miniplex' - a premium version of Movie Magic, where every element, from premium recliners and gourmet food to laser projection and a Dolby sound system, is thoughtfully designed to make movie time more magical than ever before.

Complementing the lavish seats and glam design is an equally upscale food and beverage section. Think gourmet wraps and pizzas, decadent desserts, crisp salads, plus a wide range of hot and cold beverages-all prepared with fresh
ingredients and care. The counters are elegantly styled, featuring sleek finishes, tasteful ambient lighting, and efficient service, fitting perfectly within the cinema's overall aesthetic.
Mukta A2 Cinemas currently operates around 100 screens nationwide-including international locations like Bahrain-under its umbrella. Vadodara was the site of the chain's original launch in 2011, making it a symbolic choice for debuting this premium format.
The launch was perfectly timed with the nationwide release of a major Bollywood tentpole, Housefull 5, drawing attention from the excited weekend crowds. Such timing ensures perfect alignment between fresh content and fresh experience.
Entering 'Opulence' feels like stepping into a boutique hotel lobby. Calm, spacious, and carefully lit. The welcoming foyer sets the tone-even before guests reach their comfy seats. In today's world of streaming and home entertainment, cinemas like this are redefining why we go out to watch movies.
Of course, with its premium positioning comes a challenge: ticket prices. Though not yet disclosed, they're expected to be higher than standard prices, yet Mukta A2 banks on affluent moviegoers and those willing to splurge on luxury experiences. Other multiplex chains in India are also venturing into luxury formats, but Mukta A2's strategy stands out with its focus on fully premium seating, rich interiors, gourmet café-style F&B, and top-tier AV tech-all under one sophisticated roof. For local audiences, 'Opulence' isn't just another screening room-it's an upscale social space. Ideal for family outings, romantic dates, or gathering with friends, it offers more than just a film; it promises an immersive evening. As Vadodara's first luxury format, it could set a trend, prompting other operators to raise their game in design, comfort, and service quality.
Mukta A2's 'Opulence' in Vadodara brings a bold new vision: where top-notch tech, plush comfort, and hospitality converge to create moviegoing as a luxury event.
It's a reminder that cinemas can still wow, so long as they invest in the full multisensory experience. If initial buzz is any indication, 'Opulence' is poised to become the city's premier destination for deluxe film experiences.
