AJAY DEVGN TAKES HIS CHAIN OF THEATRES TO THE SOUTH

Having recently rebranded his cinema from NY Cinemas to Devgn CineX, Ajay Devgn plans to expand the chain to seven cities in South India; plans to open VFX training centres too. Ajay Devgn is in talks with three production houses in South India, with his first collaboration of the lot being with Kannada director JP Thuminad. But the superstar's interest in the South market goes well beyond headlining movies. In October, he unveiled Devgn CineX - his chain of theatres, earlier known as NY Cinemas - in collaboration with Hyderabad-based Chinta Sasidhar's Vishwa Samudra Group. It is learnt that over the next few years, Devgn intends to expand the chain across seven cities in South India. Devgn first started NY Cinemas in 2019 in Ratlam, before launching more outlets in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. A source reveals, "Now with the new identity of Devgn CineX, the plan is to expand it all over India, especially in the southern cities of Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Guntur, and more. In the past few years, Ajay has noticed the rise of Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada movies, and how the footfall in theatres is higher in that market.

The company's strategic focus is to expand across metros, tier-1 cities, and strengthen its footprint in South India. The brand wants to redefine the moviegoing experience through state-of-the-art theatres equipped with modern digital technologies, and by offering customer reward programmes." Theatre chains are only a part of Devgn's larger plan. The actor also wants to expand his VFX Company, NY VFXWaala. While it already has a presence in Hyderabad, the superstar wants to take it to other cities. Another significant step is opening VFX training centres. The source elaborates, "In July, Ajay met Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and expressed his interest in establishing a VFX skill-training centre to create more job opportunities for the youth as well as increase the talent pool in the film industry. He plans to bring in experts for the skill training studio. He wants to promote the media and film industries as part of the Telangana Rising 2047 plan. His VFX Company recently tied up with the Swedish studio, Goodbye Kansas Studios, and will use its technologies to upgrade the VFX quality in India."

SC PUTS THE BRAKE ON KARNATAKA HC'S

MULTIPLEX AUDIT

RULE

The Supreme Court stayed the Karnataka High Court's order mandating multiplexes to maintain detailed, auditable records of every ticket sold. According to reports, the interim order, passed by a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, provided major relief to multiplex operators across Karnataka, who had argued that the directive was operationally impractical and burdensome. As reported by Live Law, the court agreed to hear the plea filed by the Multiplex Association of India and issued notices to the Karnataka State Film Chamber of Commerce and other respondents, seeking replies within four weeks. The battle over Karnataka's INR 200 ticket cap. The legal dispute starts from the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) (Amendment) Rules, 2025. It introduced a maximum ticket price of INR 200 across cinema halls in the state. A single judge of the Karnataka High Court had initially stayed the cap. This granted reprieve to theatre owners. However, a Division Bench later directed multiplexes to maintain exhaustive ticket sale recordsincluding transaction dates, payment modes, and GST details - until the main issue was resolved. Multiplex owners contended that such a system would be difficult to implement, especially given the dominance of online bookings and automated platforms that already maintain digital transaction trails.

71ST NATIONAL FILM AWARDS: INDIAN CINEMA'S TRIUMPH OF STORIES AND STARS

The 71st National Film Awards at Vishwan Bhavani, New Delhi, merged celebration with a tribute to the very core of Indian cinema. President Droupadi Murmu was present at the event to confer the artists. The evening was a memorable event fueled with applause and standing ovations, proving the fact that films should not merely exist to entertain, but also awaken and inspire. At the top of the night, President Murmu presented the highly respected Dadasaheb Phalke Award to Mohanlal, one of the key figures in Indian and Malayalam cinema, who has impressively directed over 360 films. Mohanlal's contribution to India's cultural cinema, from the theatre to phenomenal films like Vanaprastham and Karnabharam, has greatly enriched India's cultural cinema. Mohanlal's achievements inspire tremendous respect and deep-rooted reverence, and the President emphasised how the reverence for him spans through the decades. Mohanlal, in turn, while accepting the award, demonstrated his signature humility and presented it to his colleagues in the Malayalam film industry as well as to the, as he calls, ‘magical and sacred’ cinema. He further said, "Every film has touched me profoundly, and I have to say I will do my job even better." He said this in the context of the sentiment of the night, 1 which was equally resonated by the reverberation of applause in the hall: cinema is the heart of the nation, not only a form of art. Gala nights like this one place importance on the projects and artists who best capture the spirit of the country, in this case, extending and amplifying it through the medium of film. Shah Rukh

Khan's performance in Jawan, where he combines an over-the-top character with emotional nuances, earned him the Best Actor award, a title he shares with Vikrant Massey, who portrays a far more raw and inspiring character in 12th Fail. Rani Mukherji's depiction of a mother who goes through immense hardship in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway won the heart of the audience, making her a prime candidate for the Best Actress award by successfully embodying the pain of a mother in a universal tone. Alongside, Vijayaraghavan and Muthupettai Somu Bhaskar were awarded Best Supporting Actors, showcasing the ability of subtle roles to pack a punch. Likewise, the Best Supporting Actresses, Urvashi and Janki Bodiwala, left a mark with their performances for the sheer realism and emotional heft they lent their films. The films were a composite of the dreams and struggles of the nation. Winner for Best Feature Film, 12th Fail, was a tale of indomitable spirit, while Flowering Man won Best NonFeature and highlighted captivating cinema against the backdrop of the

ability to reveal. God Vulture and Human won Best Documentary for the same reason, allowing cinema to shed light on unrealised aspects of reality. In new areas, Best Film in AVGC (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics) was awarded to Hanuman, exemplifying India's achievement in the domains of visual storytelling. Best Short Film was awarded to Giddh: The Scavenger. President Murmu appreciated the diversity of the country as reflected through the lens of cinema. Like the country's literature, 'Films entertain but also awaken society and instil sensitivity,' she pointed out, emphasising their power of raising awareness. President Murmu also appreciated the increased engagement from women in the industry, but urged for more participation on and off the camera to realise their potential. The awards also honoured six young artists, and the President expressed cinema's anticipated concentration on themes about ecology, which shows the industry is looking at global issues. Like any other award ceremony, the 71st National Film

Awards were a reminder of the versatility of Indian cinema, its ability to connect the mainstream with the experimental, stars with newcomers, and the grandeur with the gritty. When the audience cheered the winners, it was evident that these stories were dreamt by a nation, inspired by the likes of Shah Rukh Khan's jaw-dropping charisma, right down to the subdued strength of 12th Fail. With initiatives like IICT and Waves 2025, the future of Indian cinema is sure to reflect and shape the world.

A FIRST IN THE HISTORY OF INDIAN CINEMA

Varun Gupta's Max Marketing is now set to present Dashavatar, one of the highest-grossing Marathi films of 2025, in Malayalam, to release on 21st November. It's the first ever in cinema history that a Marathi film is releasing in Malayalam. Directed by Subodh Khanolkar and produced by Sujay Hande of Ocean Films, Dashavatar, starring veteran actor Dilip Prabhavalkar, released in September and became a massive blockbuster. The film not only captivated Marathi-speaking audiences but also drew large

numbers from non-Marathi viewers - a rare featured in regional cinema. Speaking about the decision to bring the film to Malayalam audiences, Varun Gupta shared, "I've had the good fortune of working across various film industries in India. What I've realised is that Malayalam audiences are among the few who don't go to theatres solely based on star power - they watch films for their context and quality. In most other industries, including Hindi, it's the stars who grab attention." Sharing why he chose Dashavatar, he tells, "When I watched the film, I was spellbound by its visuals and emotions. I truly believe such a film cannot be confined by language - its emotions are universal and deeply relatable. I have a strong feeling that the Malayalam audience will connect with it. We often see national films being dubbed into multiple languages, but I believe regional cinema also has that calibre and deserves to travel beyond boundaries." With Dashavatar now gearing up for its Malayalam release, Max Marketing continues its commitment to championing powerful storytelling that transcends language and geography.

KANTARACHAPTER1 BECOMES HIGHEST INDIAN GROSSER OF 2025

Rishab Shetty starrer Kantara Chapter 1 is now the highestgrossing film of 2025 at the worldwide box office. The Kannada epic mythological action drama has finally surpassed Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava. According to Sacnilk, Kantara Chapter 1 earned 1 crore on day 33, all languages included.

It is now nearing its saturation, amid strong competition from Baahubali - The Epic in multiple languages. Compared to the INR 1.85 crores earned last Friday, it saw a 46% decline in earnings. The net box office collection reaches INR 611.80 crore net, all languages included. Kantara Chapter 1 is now inching closer to surpassing Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava ( INR 615.39 crores) and becoming the #1 grosser of 2025 in India. Including taxes, the gross total comes to INR 72.192 crores. As mentioned above, Rishab Shetty's blockbuster is yet to beat Chhaava's domestic collection. However, with an impressive overseas run, Kantara Chapter 1 has surpassed the global lifetime of Vicky Kaushal's highest-grossing film. It is now the #1 Indian film at the worldwide box office. In 33 days, the Kantara prequel has accumulated INR 832.42 crore gross worldwide. This includes INR 110.50 crores from the overseas circuits. Rishab Shetty has also delivered the 2nd highestgrossing Kannada film of all time, only behind KGF Chapter 2 (INR 1230 crores).

PVR

INOX

POSTS INR 126 CR IN AD REVENUE, A POST-PANDEMIC HIGH

Multiplex chain PVR INOX is banking on two growth engines to power its next phase - a revival in cinema advertising and a new high-end dine-in cinema format that merges fine dining with movie watching. The company, which reported its strongest quarterly performance in two years, said both verticals are emerging as major differentiators in a market increasingly driven by experience and content diversity. Advertising, one of the worst-hit segments during the pandemic years, has bounced back sharply. PVR INOX's ad revenues for the second quarter of FY26 touched INR 126 crore, the highest since the pandemic and a 16% increase year-on-year. Advertising revenue was driven by FMCG, banking, textiles, e-commerce, and jewellery sectors, followed by automobiles and retail. Executives noted that upcoming GST-related consumption boosts and festive spending could lift ad revenues further in Q3. The company's leadership, including Managing Director Ajay Bijli, Executive Director Sanjeev Kumar, and CFO Gaurav Sharma, shared highlights of the quarter during an investor conference call. Bijli said the momentum that began in the first quarter had accelerated in the second, making the first half of FY26 "one of the most remarkable periods in recent times." He noted that the growth was broad-based and not dependent on one or two blockbuster titles. The Indian box office expanded by 15% year-on-year in the first half, led by diverse content across languages and formats. In the second quarter alone, 12 films crossed the INR 100 crore mark, while 22 titles did so in the first half-the highest

number since the pandemic. Hindi films saw a strong recovery, led by titles such as Saiyaara and Mahavatar Narsimha, both of which demonstrated that quality storytelling, not just star power, was driving theatre audiences. Star-driven releases like War 2 and Jolly LLB 3 also performed well, reflecting a balance between content-led and star-led hits. Hollywood films grossed INR 500 crore during the quarter, with franchises such as Jurassic World, The Conjuring, Superman, Demon Slayer, and The Fantastic Four performing strongly. Regional cinema continued to thrive as wellKannada box office collections grew by more than 100%, led by Su from So, while Malayalam cinema saw a 50% rise thanks to Lokah Chapter 1, which became the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever at INR 180 crore. Tamil and Telugu hits such as Coolie, They Call Him OG, and Mirai also contributed to regional growth.

MAHARASHTRA TO KEEP CINEMAS OPEN 24/7HERE'S HOW IT CHANGES EVERYTHING

Imagine watching a blockbuster movie at midnight after work or catching a classic film early in the morning - all without worrying about closing hours! That dream might soon come true in Maharashtra. The state government has decided to allow cinemas and malls to operate 24/7, a move that could completely reshape how India experiences entertainment. The announcement has already sparked

excitement across the film industry, with movie buffs and theatre owners calling it a ‘game-changer.’ From late-night screenings to nonstop shows, Maharashtra's decision could set a trend that other states may soon follow.

The Maharashtra government's directive, issued in late September, allows theatres and shopping malls to stay open around the clock. The goal? To revive footfall and boost the entertainment sector, which has been facing fluctuating revenues post-pandemic. Cinema owners believe this move could increase their revenue by 25-30%, especially if executed smartly. With more flexible screening times, people working late shifts or night jobs will finally have the freedom to catch a show that fits their schedule. Largescale movies like Avatar, Jawan, or Kantara Chapter 1 could benefit immensely. "We've wanted this freedom for years," said a multiplex owner. "Imagine regular midnight premieres or all-night marathons. It will make our cinemas feel alive again - just like global entertainment hubs." Experts predict that Gen Z, college students, and professionals will be the first to embrace this change. Many young people prefer nightlife activities, and now, movie marathons could be part of that. A student from Mumbai University shared, "We hang out late at cafés anyway. Watching a movie at 1 A.M. sounds thrilling!" The move is also expected to benefit fan-driven films, those massive event movies where audiences love cheering, clapping, and celebrating in packed theatres. Bollywood blockbusters, pan-India releases, and even Hollywood tentpoles could see a spike in late-night viewership. Even smaller genres - thrillers, horror flicks, and cult classics - might find a loyal night audience. The thrill of

watching a horror movie post-midnight is an experience on its own, after all! While the decision sounds exciting, opinions are split. Many experts welcome the idea, but some remain cautious. Cinema consultant Rakesh Mehra explained, "The idea works in theory, but not every city has an audience that stays awake past midnight. In Northern India, the cold weather might discourage late-night shows. It's more practical in metros like Mumbai or Pune." Others point out logistical challenges - safety, transportation, and staffing. Running theatres 24/7 means managing workers in shifts, ensuring security, and maintaining crowd discipline. Still, many believe Maharashtra's film culture makes it the perfect state to try this first. The audience here is diverse, passionate, and open to new experiences. The ripple effects of this decision go far beyond entertainment. Extended hours mean more employment, longer working shifts, and greater business for nearby restaurants, cafés, and transport services. Local businesses, especially food joints and convenience stores, are thrilled. "We depend on moviegoers for latenight sales," said a café owner near a popular multiplex in Andheri. "If shows run all night, our business will also grow." The policy could also encourage film festivals,

special screenings, and fan events to happen overnight - similar to how global cities host marathon screenings. Maharashtra could become India's first true "24-hour entertainment hub." On social media, movie lovers are buzzing with excitement. The idea of watching Avengers: Endgame or Jawan at 2 A.M. feels electric to fans. Memes and jokes have flooded X (formerly Twitter), with users saying, "Finally, my insomnia has a purpose!" However, a few have raised safety concerns for women returning home late at night. Theatre chains have responded, saying they will coordinate with police and local authorities to ensure safe transportation options. If implemented smoothly, this could become a cultural shift - where cinema becomes an anytime, anywhere experience.

Maharashtra's 24/7 cinema move might sound like just a policy decision, but it's much more - it's a revolution for India's movie culture. It's about giving freedom to audiences, empowering cinema owners, and breathing new life into late-night entertainment.

LOKAHCHAPTER1: FIRST MALAYALAM FILM TO CROSS INR 300 CRORE MARK AT THE BOX OFFICE

The Malayalam film industry has just pulled off something spectacular. Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, the superhero hit directed by Dominic Arun, has crossed the INR 300 crore mark at the global box office - the first-ever Malayalam film to do so. Starring Kalyani Priyadarshan and Naslen in lead roles, and produced by Dulquer Salmaan, Lokah achieved

the milestone on its 45th day in theatres, proving that the regional industry can deliver numbers that once seemed impossible. Released in August, during the festive Onam season, Lokah opened to glowing reviews and strong word of mouth. What began as a promising regional release soon turned into a nationwide craze, pulling audiences from across India and overseas. By September 22, the makers announced that Lokah had already become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time with INR 275 crore in global earnings. That record dethroned Prithviraj Sukumaran's L2: Empuraan, which had earlier collected INR 265.5 crore, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. Now, Lokah has gone one step further - smashing past INR 300 crore and setting a new benchmark for Malayalam cinema. In Kerala alone, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra has collected over INR 119 crore and become the mostwatched Malayalam film of the 21st century, according to its makers It has also sold over 5 million tickets through online booking appsanother first for Malayalam cinema. Critics have credited the film's success to its mix of strong writing and visual appeal. Several celebs such as Priyanka Chopra, Alia Bhatt, Akshay Kumar and others publicly praised the movie and showed their support. With its record-breaking run, Lokah seems to be a turning point for Malayalam cinema on the national stage.

INDIA'S CUMULATIVE BO COLLECTION UP BY 18%

With regional content and midbudget films like the Telugulanguage action thriller They Call Him OG attracted audiences to theatres, and September became the third consecutive month to cross INR1,000 crore at the Indian box office, according to a report by Ormax Media. As a result, the cumulative box office for the January-September period reached INR 9,409 crore, 18 per cent higher than the same period last year. In September, They Call Him OG topped the gross domestic box office collection with INR 224 crore. Starring actor Pawan Kalyan, the film also entered the top 10 releases for 2025 till September, at sixth position, the report titled India Box Office Report: September 2025 highlighted. Following They Call Him OG is the comedy-drama Jolly LLB 3, starring Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi as Jolly Mishra and Jolly Tyagi, which is expected to mint INR139 crore at the domestic box office over its lifetime run. "Telugu-language film Mirai and the Hollywood horror franchise film The Conjuring: Last Rites were the other major contributors to the month's box office," the report stated. With anime films boosting multiplex chains' footfalls, September saw the action-

adventure film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - The Movie: Infinity Castle becoming the sixthhighest in terms of domestic box office collection at INR 90 crore. From anime to comedy-drama to action, September saw films across various languages and genres. This was in contrast to last year, when cinema exhibitors struggled to fill seats at theatres. With unexpected films performing well at the box office becoming a usual norm this year, the Marathi-language film Dashavatar made INR 30 crore at the box office. "At INR 30 crore, its gross box office is more than three times that of any other Marathi film released in 2025 so far," the report noted. Among the most anticipated and hyped Hindi-language releases of the month was the Tiger Shroffstarrer Baaghi 4, which managed to mint INR 64 crore at the domestic box office. So far, Hindi-language films continue to dominate the list of this year's top 10 highestgrossing films, with six entries. The list also includes two Telugulanguage films, one Tamil-language film, and the multi-lingual animated feature Mahavatar Narsimha.

In comparison, last year till September, four out of the top 10 films of the year came from Telugu cinema.

FAMILY FORGETS CHILD AT CINEMA AFTER FAILING TO GET TICKETS

In Kerala, as crowds continue to throng theatres to watch Lokah –Chapter 1, an unusual incident took place when a family, in their excitement to see the muchanticipated film, accidentally left their child behind at a cinema before heading to another theatre after failing to secure tickets.

The incident occurred at Devaki Cinemas in Guruvayur, where staff were startled to find a seven-yearold boy crying amid the bustling crowd eagerly waiting for the movie. Upon enquiry, the theatre staff learned that the boy had been separated from his family, who had arrived together in a van from a nearby town to watch the film.

Unable to obtain tickets at Devaki Cinemas, the family decided to drive to another theatre in hopes of catching a show, inadvertently leaving the child behind in the commotion.

The alert staff immediately took the boy to safety and contacted the police, who soon managed to trace and reunite him with his family.

‘WFH: WORK FROM (CINEMA) HALL’ IN BENGALURU

In a city known for its relentless innovation and tireless drive, Bengaluru once again proved why it’s the country’s startup capital — this time, in the most unexpected of places: a movie theatre.

A recent social media post described a woman who, during a film screening, opened her laptop and began working 'like she’s in office.' What could easily have been dismissed as a case of overwork instead sparked a surprisingly warm debate online — about dedication, passion, and the unique work culture that defines Bengaluru.

While some were amused at the idea of 'Work From (Cinema) Hall, others applauded the woman’s commitment, joking that “only in Bengaluru can deadlines and dialogues share the same screen.” Many netizens said it perfectly captures the city’s go-getter spirit — a place where creativity and productivity know no bounds. Post-pandemic flexibility has allowed many professionals to work from anywhere, and sometimes, that means balancing a deliverable while catching a long-awaited movie. For many in the tech hub, it’s not just about work invading personal time — it’s about the passion to deliver, wherever inspiration (or Wi-Fi) strikes. The lighthearted moment has now become an online symbol of Bengaluru’s energy — a reminder that even amidst hustle, the city’s spirit remains vibrant, adaptable, and full of life. After all, where else would 'multitasking' mean coding through the climax?

MOHANLAL GETS A STANDING OVATION, RECEIVING THE DADASAHEB PHALKE AWARD

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal was conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award by the President, Droupadi Murmu, at the 71st National Awards ceremony at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Committee chose Mohanlal as the recipient of the award for his contribution to Indian cinema. The actor, who has an experience of more than four decades in the Indian film industry, received a standing ovation from the attendees at the Vigyan Bhawan as he accepted the award. Mohanlal's wife, Suchitra Mohanlal, was also present at the ceremony. Suchitra appeared to be emotional when the actor was called on stage to collect the award. President Murmu was joined by the Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at the event. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry recognised Mohanlal's remarkable cinematic journey while announcing the award. Mohanlal said he views it as something much bigger than himself. The superstar explained that since the honour is returning to the Malayalam film industry after "20 years", it belonged to all the artists who

have shaped him as an actor. "This is a tribute to the Malayalam film industry. After 20 years, this award is coming back to the Malayalam film industry. So, I am sharing this award with the Malayalam industry. I share this with all the great artists who work with me in Malayalam cinema, who have shaped me, who brought the artist in me, and who have shown beautiful light on my graceful walk in the industry. I share all my love and respect with them. When I heard that I was receiving the award, it was the greatest moment of my life," said Mohanlal. In a career spanning over four decades, Mohanlal has worked in numerous films across various genres. Known primarily for his work in Malayalam films, Mohanlal has also featured in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi films. He has received numerous accolades, including National Awards and the prestigious Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. Veteran filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan from Kerala was conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2004 for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema.

THE CANVAS OF CINEMA: TURNING EVERY FRAME INTO PERFORMANCE AND PROFIT

In today's cinema world, the screen is no longer just a surface; it's the heart of the experience. With the rise of RGB laser projection and HDR imaging, audiences now expect sharper, brighter, and more immersive visuals than ever before. For exhibitors, that demand isn't just artistic, it's financial. The right screen can improve presentation quality, extend equipment life, and increase audience return rates. That's why Galalite Screens have become the trusted choice for theatres looking to combine engineering precision with business performance.

Engineering Performance into ROI

Visual precision is not just about image quality; it's a measurable business asset. Every design

element of Galalite Screens is engineered to optimise operational performance and long-term profitability. Spectral accuracy improves perceived colour realism, directly enhancing presentation quality and audience satisfaction. Uniform reflectance ensures consistent image brightness from centre to edge, reducing viewer fatigue and complaints.

Optimised gain efficiency maximises light utilisation, lowering projector power consumption and maintenance costs. Durable coatings extend screen lifespan, minimising replacement frequency and operational downtime. By maintaining high-quality projection over time, exhibitors achieve greater

retention, higher occupancy, and premium pricing justification, turning optical performance into measurable financial results.

Reduced Speckle and Contrast Balance for High-Gain Projection

High-brightness projection often introduces speckle, a major challenge in modern RGB laser systems. Galalite Screens overcome this with advanced surface engineering that suppresses speckle artefacts even at ultra-high gain levels, ensuring smooth, crystalclear imagery. The screen's microstructured surface maintains a precise contrast-to-gain equilibrium, producing depth, clarity, and visual comfort across the entire viewing area. The result is

• TECHNOLOGY

a cleaner, more immersive visual experience that keeps audiences engaged and returning.

Powered by Lensray Technology

At the core of Galalite's innovation is its proprietary Lensray diffusion technology, a precision optical system that ensures consistent luminance and image fidelity across every seat in the auditorium. This centre-to-edge uniformity means every viewer experiences optimal brightness and sharpness, eliminating common issues like hot-spotting or brightness falloff. For exhibitors, this translates into fewer audience complaints, enhanced viewing satisfaction, and a stronger premium reputation, vital metrics for sustaining profitability in competitive markets.

Field Results and Industry Validation

Real-world installations continue to validate the link between Galalite's optical precision and business performance. Cinemas equipped with Galalite Screens report: Up to 20% improvement in brightness consistency across large-format auditoriums, reduced speckle and visual fatigue, particularly in high-lumen RGB laser setups, positive audience feedback that correlates with increased repeat attendance, longer operational lifespan, reducing reinvestment and service interruptions. These measurable outcomes demonstrate how engineering precision directly converts to sustained ROI, enhancing the theatre's visual standards while reducing operational costs.

The Business Equation: From Experience to Growth

When audiences enjoy superior visuals, they don't just appreciate it; they return for it. Every satisfied viewer contributes to a cycle of loyalty, reputation, and revenue growth. Galalite Screens empower cinema owners to: Deliver premium visual experiences that justify higher ticket pricing, increase occupancy rates through stronger audience retention, reduce costs via energy-efficient light utilisation and durable screen materials, future-proof their projection systems, ready for evolving RGB and HDR formats. In essence, a Galalite screen is both a performance upgrade and a business investment, a technological asset that delivers measurable returns with every frame projected.

Final Frame: The ROI of Visual Precision

A screen that captures light perfectly not only honours the filmmaker's vision but also strengthens the exhibitor's bottom line. Galalite Screens, The Canvas of Cinema, transform engineering excellence into business advantage. Because when the visuals perform flawlessly, the experience deepens, the audience returns, and the investment pays back, frame after frame.

BEYOND POPCORNS & MOVIES

The cinema experience in India is evolving beyond the traditional dark room and popcorn. PVR INOX has raised the curtain on a new era with the launch of the country's first dedicated fine-dine-in screen at M5 E-City Mall in Bengaluru. TheatreWorld team sat down with Aamer Bijli, Promoter & Lead - Marketing & Innovations, PVR INOX, to discuss this ambitious move. In this exclusive interview, he details the strategy behind blending luxury dining with big-screen entertainment, the technological innovations enhancing the experience, to meet the demands of an increasingly discerning modern audience.

Beyond just aesthetics, what is the core philosophy behind incorporating biophilic lobbies?

This is a very interesting question. Essentially, following COVID-19, we’ve observed a strong, inherent need for people to be outdoors and engage with natural colours for their well-being. What we’ve found is that integrating biodiversity and greenery into the cinema ecosystem significantly increases its appeal, inviting more people inside. We

believe this goes beyond a fad or a trend; it actually addresses a fundamental consumer need to experience the outdoors, particularly in urban environments where such greenery is scarce. Our goal was truly to create a comfortable ecosystem.

Could you elaborate on the operational and logistical challenges of running India’s first fine-dine-in cinema auditorium?

We’ll only discover the true operational challenges once we officially begin running the dine-in concept. However, I don’t anticipate anything dramatic. We already have a division called the Luxury Collection (TLC), which fully incorporates a strong focus on dine-in and food concepts through our ‘Director’s Cut’ and ‘Luxe’ theatres. Consequently, our teams are well-

prepared to handle very high-stakes scenarios, ensuring food is served on time, with proper efficiency, and with the necessary culinary skill set. I believe the only challenges we might foresee relate to the type of food itself, as we’re now offering items that are much more restaurantfriendly as opposed to the traditional cinema fare. Time will certainly tell, but I’m confident our team is robust enough to manage all these details.

How does the new lounge-style seating balance comfort with maximum screen visibility, and what new in-seat technology has been integrated to enhance the Theatre 2.0 experience?

The auditorium features wider spacing—about 2,500 mm between rows—allowing guests and servers to move freely without disrupting the viewing experience. The rakes are elevated to ensure clear sightlines from every seat. Seating is designed for pairs or groups of four, with angular swivel chairs that face the screen yet allow easy interaction. Additionally, AI cameras monitor occupancy and operations in real time to maintain a seamless and efficient environment.

You mention responding to how young India socialise and consume content beyond just watching films. How does this new property align with that?

This property is designed to be a fully experiential space where entry isn’t limited to moviegoers. With seamless technology-enabled access, guests can walk in to enjoy curated food and beverage options, much like a modern food court. Soon, we’ll introduce gaming zones, allowing visitors to relax, socialise, or simply spend quality time. The idea is to create a destination where people come for more than just films—a space that encourages repeat visits through comfort, variety, and engaging experiences. Every element has been built to ensure guests leave wanting to return.

In a market increasingly dominated by OTT platforms, how is Theatre 2.0 specifically

designed to convert the at-home binge-watcher into a recurring in-cinema visitor?

I believe the market is wide enough that we don’t need to fight for attention. The real competition isn’t between OTT and cinema—it’s about people choosing how to spend their time. My goal is to create a space where communities come together to watch, talk, and share experiences. Many find traditional cinemas too restrictive; here, they can interact freely while enjoying films, gaming, live events, or comedy shows. I see this as a true ‘third place’ beyond home and work—a social destination that brings people together for connection and entertainment.

Raghav with Aamer Bijli during the inaugural

Since F&B and advertising are becoming critical high-margin revenue streams, what is the strategy to boost spend per head and operational margins?

We’ve implemented a few key strategies in this property to enhance convenience and boost sales. First, we’ve placed QR codes strategically around the auditorium. This provides an easy way for guests to order food, reducing friction. When food is more readily available and ordering is simpler, it naturally encourages people to order more. Second, we introduced digital kiosks next to all the service queues. Typically, long queues can deter a consumer from placing a larger or second order. These selfservice kiosks have directly impacted our Spend per Head (SPH). Specifically, just by adding these digital kiosks, we’ve seen an overall contribution of about 11 rupees to our SPH. This is a very prominent and successful strategy that we plan to continue leveraging.

Will there be a change in the F&B menu, considering the regional aspects or specially curated international gourmet dishes?

We certainly hope to, at times, run special menus that align with the film playing on screen. For instance, if a Diwali film is running, we would offer a celebratory Diwali menu. Similarly, for films like Ratatouille or Chef, we would customise the menu accordingly; perhaps focusing on Italian cuisine for a relevant film. Even without a specific film tie-in, we change our standard menu seasonally. To ensure our offerings are contemporary and high-quality, we collaborate with renowned Master Chefs, such as Sarah Todd. Our menu is a mix of local and international flavours. It features a strong selection of local, regional food, alongside popular global delights and not excluding the favourite- popcorns. These include

classic hits like steamed items, full-fledged Chinese and Japanese cuisine, and essential American food.

What is the long-term goal for this blending of lifestyle and entertainment?

This is a long-term vision. I believe constant innovation is essential— it’s been a core principle at PVR INOX for nearly three decades. With the dine-in concept, we plan to launch four to five more screens within the next year, depending on market readiness and the success of this initial model. Beyond dine-in, we’ll continue expanding into underserved regions while introducing new experiences and technologies across those locations. The goal is to keep redefining cinema, ensuring it remains exciting, relevant, and ahead of evolving consumer expectations.

What key initiatives are you implementing to boost overall footfalls and repeat visits?

Footfalls are rising thanks to a strong content pipeline, re-releases of cult favourites, and our ‘Manufacturing Footfalls’ program, which engages communities through F&B experiences. We also boost attendance via bulk bookings, lending cinemas for corporate events, weddings, and educational purposes, creating multiple touchpoints for audience engagement.

What technology or innovation has been added to this particular venue?

In addition to the AI cameras, we’ve implemented several other technological upgrades. We’ve introduced LED screens that allow for seamless programming with zero latency or hindrance. A major focus has been on deploying kiosks to efficiently manage queues and reduce wait times. Finally, we’ve introduced gaming, specifically AR and VR activations, which we developed with local partners and which will be visible in the coming weeks.

As a fine dine-in theatre, will the venue’s programming be limited to movies, or will it also feature live events, cricket matches, and other entertainment shows?

We offer everything our patrons enjoy. Beyond films, programming includes live shows, sports like cricket, and cultural events— ensuring the screen is fully utilised for diverse experiences in our finedining setting.

Specifically, how is the food service managed to ensure a seamless, non-disruptive cinematic experience in a dark environment?

We’ve placed kiosks outside the counters so guests can order, get a number, and pick up food at a separate counter, cutting queue times and improving the experience. Customers can also pre-order before arriving, specifying when they want their order ready. In-seat delivery is available in all premium and fine-dining cinemas, where patrons can use a table service button. Soon, this service will expand to other venues. Guests can also scan a QR code from their seat to order, eliminating lines or needing to flag an usher, ensuring a seamless, convenient dining experience.

CINEMATIC BENCHMARK IN ALWAR, RAJASTHAN

Ranked among the nation's largest and fastest-expanding multiplex operators, this cinema chain has dramatically enhanced its presence in the key regional market of Rajasthan. This expansion culminates in the recent opening of the largest luxury cinema property, with a four-screen facility that is not merely a venue for watching movies, but is engineered to transform the local entertainment landscape. By establishing itself as the city's premier lifestyle and moviegoing destination, this new launch marks a significant commitment to delivering world-class cinematic experiences to audiences in India's dynamic Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.

In a significant strategic move, Miraj Cinemas, recognised as India's third-largest and one of the country's fastest-growing multiplex

chains, has substantially expanded its footprint in Rajasthan.

The company marked this latest milestone with the launch of Alwar's

largest luxury cinema, a four-screen property situated at the Urban Square Galleria Mall on Alwar Tijara Road near Telco Circle, which opened its doors over the recent weekend. This new facility is poised to completely redefine the moviegoing experience for the city's residents, immediately emerging as its premier entertainment hub and a key lifestyle destination.

The newly inaugurated multiplex boasts a total seating capacity of 606 across its four state-of-the-art auditoriums, each meticulously engineered to harmonise exceptional comfort with grand

scale. The seating arrangement offers audiences the ultimate blend of luxury and relaxation, featuring plush push-back seats complemented by best-in-class recliners. The individual capacity of the auditoriums is thoughtfully staggered to cater to varying audience sizes: Audi 1 holds 140 guests, Audi 2 seats 146, Audi 3 holds 138, and the largest of the four, Audi 4, can host 182 guests.

The design of the new property was meticulously planned and executed under the leadership of Architect Sunil Kaushik of Silhouette The Design Studio. This approach perfectly embodies Miraj Cinemas' hallmark philosophy: an elegant fusion of modern luxury and inviting cultural warmth. Inside the auditoriums, the aesthetic is defined by rich golden-beige tones and sophisticated geometric wall patterns, with subtle ambient lighting engineered to enhance the atmosphere without overpowering the film viewing.

The contemporary look is further refined by acoustic panelling and sleek lines, while the use of patterned carpeting adds both vibrancy and visual rhythm. The culmination of these thoughtful design choices is a setting that

"Rajasthan holds a special place in our growth journey, and the launch of Alwar reinforces our long-term commitment to this region. Urban Square Galleria Mall provides us with the perfect setting, a centrally located, easily accessible lifestyle hub that's set to become the city's go-to entertainment destination. Our strategy has always been to deliver premium, world-class experiences not just in metro cities but also in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets, where audiences are equally passionate about cinema. We are excited to continue our journey of innovation and expansion, making Miraj Cinemas a preferred entertainment destination nationwide."

feels both indulgent and plush, yet simultaneously comfortably familiar.

Beyond the luxurious aesthetics, the ambience is enriched by cuttingedge movie technology. Every auditorium is equipped with the immersive power of Dolby 7.1 surround sound and 3D-enabled projection systems, ensuring both powerful, crystal-clear acoustics and visually stunning presentations. The dedication to a premium guest experience extends beyond the

viewing halls, with design taking centre stage in the lobby and concession areas. The signature 'Pop Corner' concession zone has been meticulously conceptualised as a modern café-meets-lounge, featuring elegant marble finishes, warm wooden accents, and sophisticated mood lighting, making it as inviting for socialising as it is functional for refreshments.

This significant launch follows the proud recognition of the brand at the IMAX Big Cine Awards 2025, where Miraj Cinemas was honoured as the 'Best Multiplex Theatre of the Year' for its spectacular IMAX Wadala property. This prestigious industry accolade further solidifies the brand's unwavering commitment to developing and operating world-class cinema destinations for audiences throughout the nation.

The launch of the Alwar multiplex is not an isolated event but a crucial step in the broader, ambitious strategy of the cinema chain and its parent entity, the Miraj Group. As a flagship venture of the Miraj Group, the cinema chain operates with a clear mandate to bring premium, world-class entertainment infrastructure not just to major cities, but to the rapidly expanding

“The design of Miraj Cinema, Alwar, is driven by a pursuit of spatial optimisation and experiential quality. Each element, from the circulation layout to acoustic treatment, has been meticulously detailed to achieve functional efficiency while maintaining a sense of visual grandeur. Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets where the audience's passion for cinema is equally intense.

As a flagship venture of the diverse Miraj Group, Miraj Cinemas is wellknown for offering premium experiences, driving youth-focused innovations, and establishing a formidable presence in both metropolitan hubs and rapidly developing regional markets. Looking ahead, the company has announced plans to incorporate two new IMAX screens into its upcoming portfolio, reinforcing its core commitment to delivering world-class cinematic experiences nationwide and further cementing its position as a dominant force in India's organised cinema retail market.

Spanning an impressive fifty-seven feet in width, this marks the first-ever projection-based EPIQ screen in the city, positioning it alongside some of the most advanced premium formats across the globe.

experience, thanks to its crystalclear 4K projection and immersive Dolby Atmos sound system, which envelops viewers in rich, threedimensional audio. Every frame bursts with clarity and depth, making the EPIQ auditorium an unmissable destination for cinephiles who crave larger-than-life storytelling. Designed with a contemporary yet inviting aesthetic, the multiplex features fluid spatial planning, warm ambient lighting, and acoustically treated interiors that merge functionality with finesse. Plush recliners, elegant textures, and thoughtfully curated colour palettes lend each auditorium a distinct identity while maintaining a cohesive visual flow throughout the complex. The foyer and common areas are crafted to evoke a sense of grandeur and openness, turning every visit into an experience that begins long before the film starts.

PJ MOVIES: AN ENTERTAINMENT LANDMARK IN ODISHA

In the heart of Odisha's smaller towns, a new kind of cinema experience is unfolding, where cutting-edge technology, immersive comfort, and local culture converge. Born from a desire to bring the magic of the big screens to places often overlooked, this theatre chain is redefining what it means to enjoy a film. These are venues where every detail, from sound to seating, projection to ambience, is crafted with care, where audiences speak many languages but share one thing: the joy of cinema done right.

PJ Movies has emerged as one of Odisha's most inspiring cinema chains, dedicated to transforming the moviegoing culture across smaller towns and semi-urban regions. Founded with a vision to democratise entertainment, PJ Movies stands as a symbol of quality, accessibility, and local pride. What began as a single-screen theatre in Barbil has now evolved into a growing network of modern cinemas across Joda, Jatni, and Berhampur, redefining how audiences in Tier-3 towns experience films.

The Journey to Excellence

The story of PJ Movies is rooted in the belief that great cinemas

should not be confined to metropolitan audiences. The brand's promoter and managing partner, Payal. S. Jaiswal has been instrumental in driving this mission forward since 2018. Under her leadership, PJ Movies has focused on expanding its footprint while maintaining a deep emotional and cultural connection with its

communities. Each theatre reflects a balance of contemporary architecture and local character, ensuring that audiences feel both comfort and belonging.

Launching in the Underserved Belt

The chain's story began in 2010 with the launch of PJ Movies Barbil

in Odisha. This wasn't just another cinema; it was a ground-breaking cultural landmark. It holds the distinction of being Odisha's firstever 3D cinema, a bold move given its location in the local mining belt, an area previously starved of entertainment and modern social spaces. This pioneering venture brought much more than just movies to the residents. It served as a new, sophisticated social hub that seamlessly blended recreation with the latest in cinematic technology. By introducing high-tech entertainment to a traditionally overlooked area, PJ Movies Barbil not only filled a significant void but also fundamentally transformed the community's leisure landscape, offering an innovative space for connection and shared experiences.

Evolution & Modernisation

PJ Movies Joda, launched in 2018, marked the next milestone, transforming a 1960s single-screen hall into a modern two-screen property that quickly became a regional landmark. This project was a significant milestone because it wasn't a new build, but a comprehensive transformation. The team took a derelict, singlescreen cinema hall dating back to the 1960s and completely

"Our dream was to bring world-class cinema experiences to places where people never imagined they'd have one. Every screen we build is a step closer to making entertainment universal."

renovated it, converting it into a modern, two-screen multiplex. The opening of PJ Movies Joda demonstrated the chain's commitment to modernisation and preservation. By revitalising an ageing community structure, they turned a piece of cinematic history into a state-of-the-art facility. This ambitious upgrade didn't just double the viewing capacity; it injected a fresh wave of technological sophistication and comfort into the local leisure scene, quickly establishing the property as a regional landmark and solidifying the brand's reputation as a leader in cinematic innovation within Odisha's smaller cities.

Preserving the Legacy in Jatni

The cinema in Jatni was originally established by a local visionary whose core ambition was to create a space of pride for the audiences, a community institution. When

PJ Movies took over, their goal wasn't to erase this history, but to honour and amplify it. PJ Movies successfully revived the cherished, but ageing, theatre, transforming it from a single-screen venue into a modern, two-screen property. Crucially, this expansion was executed while meticulously preserving its legacy. This approach demonstrated the chain's sensitivity to the local culture, ensuring that the upgraded facility retained the soul and community spirit instilled by its founder, cementing the theatre's status as a beloved, yet technologically refreshed, gathering place.

Berhampur: A Hub for Pan-Indian Cinema

The Berhampur location maintains the tradition of community-centric cinema while catering to a remarkably passionate and diverse audience. This crowd is noted for its deep love of the big-screen experience and its cross-cultural film appreciation. This property is a vital cultural node for South Indian cinema. The local demographic passionately embraces films across multiple languages, with a particular, strong affinity for titles from the South Indian industry. This

focus requires the cinema to manage a complex and diverse exhibition calendar, positioning it as a key venue for showcasing regional, pan-Indian hits and serving a sophisticated audience that values cinematic content beyond local boundaries.

Aesthetic & Architectural Features:

Every PJ Movies property is equipped with cutting-edge technology, including Christie and NEC 2K digital projectors, Dolby 7.1 and 5.1 surround sound systems, and high-gain Galalite silver screens that elevate visual clarity. To enhance audience comfort, each auditorium features plush pushback seating with wide legroom, ambient LED lighting, customdesigned acoustic panels, and centralised HVAC systems from Voltas and Blue Star. The technical backbone is supported by Cineglobe as the consultant and Qube Cinema Technologies and KSS as server integrators, ensuring a seamless cinematic experience across all locations.

A Place Worth the Revisit

PJ Movies also places strong emphasis on local hospitality. The in-house concession counters serve a curated mix of snacks and

beverages, partnering with wellknown brands like Café Coffee Day, Coca-Cola, and SNM Popcorn, alongside local vendors to maintain freshness and regional flavour. This approach reflects the brand's philosophy of blending premium service with community relevance.

Programming and content curation at PJ Movies celebrate diversity, from Bollywood blockbusters and Odia hits to Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and English movie releases. This multilingual curation ensures inclusivity and strengthens the emotional bond between cinema

and the audience. Despite challenges like limited infrastructure, skilled manpower shortages, and logistical constraints in remote areas, the brand continues to expand its reach with determination and innovation. This cinema not only serves as an entertainment provider, but also a place for communal gathering.

A Cultural Movement and Beacon of Aspiration

PJ Movies has evolved into something far greater than a simple cinema chain; it represents a cultural movement. Its mission is to be a vital community space that brings stories, people, and emotions together under one roof. By consistently delivering big-city cinematic experiences to smaller, underserved towns across Odisha, PJ Movies acts as a powerful beacon of aspiration and connection. The cinema's underlying aim and passion for building these spaces have only intensified, driving them to continually improve and expand the quality and impact of their community offering.

“The installation of the Prism 2.4 screen at PJ Movies, Odisha, exemplifies how projection and screen technology must work in harmony to deliver a truly immersive cinema experience. Designed with advanced coating technology and optimised gain performance, the Prism 2.4 ensures exceptional brightness uniformity, colour accuracy, and contrast across every seat in the auditorium. We’re proud to collaborate with exhibitors like PJ Movies, who share our vision of elevating the cinematic experience. Every installation of a Galalite screen represents more than just technology; it’s a partnership built on innovation, quality, and the shared goal of bringing stories to life with unmatched visual brilliance.”

CITY PRIDE MULTIPLEX:

INDIA'S FIRST DOLBY CINEMA AT PUNE

Pune's cinematic landscape has been transformed with the launch of India's first Dolby Cinema at City Pride Kharadi. This new property, situated in the rapidly growing tech hub of Kharadi, introduces a premium format that combines cutting-edge audio and visual technology with an immersive design, promising to redefine the way audiences experience film.

A Legacy of Cinematic Innovation

The Chaphalkar family, the promoters of City Pride Multiplexes, have a rich history in the cinema business dating back to 1939. Their journey from a single screen to pioneering the first multiplex in Maharashtra in 2001, where the ‘Citypride’ brand was born, has now culminated in this significant launch. The CityPride chain has grown to 40 screens across 10 properties, primarily in Pune and

western Maharashtra, with a mission to provide world-class cinema at a value-for-money price. This launch reflects their continued commitment to delivering cuttingedge technology to their audience, solidifying their position as a leader in the region.

A New Era of Immersive Entertainment

CityPride Kharadi isn't just a new multiplex; it's a destination for cinephiles. The venue features seven screens with a total capacity

of 1458 seats. The crown jewel is the 310-seat Dolby Cinema auditorium, meticulously engineered to transport viewers into the heart of the story. This premium format integrates Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, technologies that create breathtaking visuals and captivating, multidimensional sound. The experience is further enhanced by technologies like HFR 3D and 4K Laser projection systems, along with premium seating that includes sofas and recliners.

The concept behind this unique offering was to go beyond standard cinema formats. Unlike traditional auditoriums, Dolby Cinema blends proprietary dual 4K laser projection with Dolby Vision, the immersive sound of Dolby Atmos, and a meticulously designed space. Acoustic treatments and sightline optimisations ensure every seat offers a complete sensory experience. The result is a lifelike picture with incredible contrast and sound that envelops you, even overhead.

The Aesthetics & Technology

The Dolby Cinema auditorium is a masterpiece of design and technology. The aesthetics follow global Dolby Cinema specifications, with dark interiors to minimise reflections, a curved screen, and a stepped seating layout that optimises viewing and sound from every angle. The architectural design transforms a visit into an event, with a signature entrance and a dynamic audio-visual pathway guiding you into the cinema. Inside, a unique faceted panel system wraps around the walls and ceiling, concealing speakers and creating the illusion that sound is coming from all surfaces. Every aspect, from the lighting to the seating, has been carefully selected to support the latest Dolby projection and sound technology, ensuring the best possible audience experience.

Technically, the auditorium is equipped with Christie E3LH Dual Laser Dolby Vision projectors, which provide an astounding contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 with a peak brightness of 108 Nits. Dolby Atmos, with its 61-channel setup, delivers lifelike, moving sound that makes audiences feel a part of the action. For 3D films, the cinema uses Dolby 3D glasses that

filter colour instead of light, preventing any dimness in the image.

The cinema screens a wide range of movies, including Hollywood, Bollywood, and regional blockbusters in languages like English, Hindi, and Marathi. Notably, War 2 is the first Indian film to be screened in a Dolby Cinema in India, marking a new chapter for domestic film exhibition.

A Launch with Momentum

Dolby Cinema's debut in Pune marks a technological milestone and an ambitious beginning, with five more Dolby Cinema properties planned for India (Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Trichy, Kochi, and Ulikkal). Globally, over 740 theatrical releases already support Dolby Vision and Atmos-a sign of widespread industry traction to redefine the theatrical experience for years to come.

BHARATH CINEMAS: PIONEERING WORLD-CLASS EXPERIENCES

Emerging from India's growing regional entertainment landscape, this new-age multiplex exemplifies how world-class cinema experiences are reaching beyond metropolitan boundaries. Designed to deliver comfort, technology, and sophistication in equal measure, it stands as a symbol of how Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities are embracing premium entertainment with modern infrastructure and cultural inclusivity.

An ambitious venture promoted by the robust and diversified Bharath Group is fundamentally reshaping the cinematic landscape across India's Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Since its inception in 2006 with the launch of its first multiplex in Mangalore, the brand has established itself as a true pioneer, holding the distinction of being the first such establishment in the districts of Mangalore and Udupi. This strategic focus on expanding beyond metropolitan hubs is driven by a clear vision: to enable rural and semi-urban populations to access modern, high-quality entertainment amenities at affordable and competitive price points.

A Strategic Expansion Model

The brand's expansion trajectory is a testament to its strategic foresight. Following the initial success in Mangalore, Bharath Cinemas has systematically

extended its footprint to key locations across Karnataka, including Manipal, Kundapur, Shivamogga, Udupi, Puttur, Padubidri (Udupi district), and Deralakatte (Mangalore). This

calculated growth aims to significantly increase the number of screens in emerging markets, addressing the current deficit in multiplex penetration. The core of this strategy lies in capitalising on the first-mover advantage in these cities, which are exhibiting higher purchasing power and strong potential for significant footfall and improved revenue.

The operational foundation of Bharath Cinemas is exceptionally strong, drawing heavily upon the financial strength and management expertise of the Bharath Group. This conglomerate boasts a deep and diversified presence across multiple sectors, including construction, real estate, the Beedi industry, automobiles, and education. Decades of experience and a strong foundation in these varied business verticals have provided the necessary leverage to successfully establish and expand the cinema brand. This diversified corporate backing ensures both financial resilience and operational sustainability, which are crucial for navigating the challenges inherent in new and emerging markets. The Group's reputation and diversified interests enhance the brand's credibility and long-term viability in a competitive entertainment industry.

Leveraging Technology

Bharath Cinemas' commitment to delivering a world-class experience is evidenced by its investment in state-of-the-art technology and superior infrastructure. The cinema properties is universally equipped with the latest projectors and cutting-edge sound systems, ensuring exceptional picture clarity and an immersive audio experience for every patron. The quality of technology is not compromised in this property.

Operational Excellence

A key differentiator in the brand's operational model is the extensive use of automation via the Theatre Management System (TMS). The integration of TMS streamlines nearly all operational processes, from scheduling and content ingestion to quality control, ensuring high precision and consistency. This level of technological sophistication enhances both the overall viewing experience for the audience and the management efficiency for the

operators. For example, a typical four-screen multiplex, with a total seating capacity of 640 seats, is designed to maximise operational throughput and, consequently, is expected to achieve high occupancy rates, supported by higher spending per head and strategically adjusted ticket pricing.

Premium Experience

The physical design of the multiplexes meticulously blends modern aesthetics with rigorous practicality. The interiors are deliberately crafted to exude a premium feel, featuring high-end finishes, sophisticated ambient lighting, and ergonomically designed seating arrangements. The architectural concept frequently employs a metal-reflective design

“We are proud that we offer a luxurious, world-class film experience with our fourscreen multiplex. Our commitment to cutting-edge technology, superior comfort, and a truly cinematic atmosphere drives us every day. And as we expand into tier-2 and tier-3 cities, where theatre density is low, we’re dedicated to bringing the joy of cinema to every corner and elevating the film industry to the next level, giving audiences what they wish for.”

theme, which cleverly enhances the perception of space and lends the multiplex a roomier, futuristic appeal.

Space optimisation has been a critical cornerstone in the development of these properties, particularly given the potential spatial constraints in some Tier-2 & Tier-3 locations. Despite these challenges, meticulous planning and efficient resource utilisation have allowed for the seamless inclusion of all essential amenities-spacious auditoriums, comfortable seating, efficient lobby layouts, and expansive concession areas-without compromising on luxury or functionality. The seating options are varied to cater to different audience preferences, including luxurious recliners, cosy sofas, and comfortable push-back seats, giving guests the freedom to choose their desired level of comfort. Every technical detail, from lighting design to acoustic engineering, is fine-tuned to ensure a superior and memorable moviegoing experience.

Inclusivity & Market Engagement

Understanding and catering to the diverse linguistic and cultural tapestry of its operating regions is paramount to Bharath Cinemas' success. The multiplexes adopt a multilingual screening strategy, catering to a diverse audience by showcasing films in multiple languages. This comprehensive offering includes Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, Tulu, Konkani, and English, ensuring broad appeal and inclusivity across varied regional and linguistic preferences. This approach is highly effective in local markets where audiences are conversant in several regional languages, such as Kannada, Hindi, Tulu, and Konkani.

The local market dynamics are highly favourable. The cities

targeted for expansion possess a growing youth population and cultural vibrancy, positioning them as promising destinations for the entertainment industry. This demographic strength, coupled with Bharath Cinemas' proactive multilingual approach, provides a strong foothold in the region and fosters deep community engagement. Further enhancing the customer value proposition, the concession area offers a carefully curated range of refreshments. These offerings are developed in collaboration with reputed vendors, prioritising quality, hygiene, and variety-from traditional popcorn and beverages to gourmet snacks-all designed to complement the premium, high-end cinema experience and drive increased spending per patron.

Moving Forward

In summary, Bharath Cinemas'

strategy is a powerful combination of financial prudence, technological sophistication, and a deep, localised understanding of audience needs. By strategically expanding access to world-class cinematic experiences in underserved Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, the Bharath Group is not only building a successful business vertical but is also making a significant cultural and economic contribution to India's emerging markets. This successful model of leveraging a strong corporate foundation to penetrate new markets positions Bharath Cinemas for sustained revenue growth and sector leadership in the regional cinema industry.

In a transformative leap for rural entertainment, this digiplex has emerged as the world's first Mobile Digital Movie Theatre (MDMT)-a fully air-conditioned, inflatable cinema housed within a truck that can be set up virtually anywhere within a few hours. Engineered to seat between 120 and 180 viewers, the movable theatre delivers a genuine multiplex experience, complete with Dolby surround sound, highdefinition projection, and optional features like Wi-Fi connectivity and interactive live-chat.

Designed with both technological sophistication and accessibility in mind, each mobile unit requires minimal permits to deploy and is fully scalable-enabling rapid expansion with up to 25 units ready for deployment each month.

The Dilemma: A Nation Starved of Screens

India, a nation that produces more than 2,000 films annually, is paradoxically starved of cinema screens. With only around 9,000 screens across the country, mostly

concentrated in metropolitan and Tier 1 cities, more than 70% of Indian films never see the light of a theatrical release. According to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, India has a potential for over 150,000 cinema screens, highlighting a staggering demandsupply gap in the entertainment ecosystem. While cinema continues to be the primary mode of entertainment for Indian families, the majority of Tier 3 to Tier 5 towns and rural regions are without any cinematic infrastructure. High capital expenditure (capex),

operational costs, and limited affordability make traditional brick-and-mortar theatres unsustainable in these regions. With average ticket prices ranging between INR 200-400, the cinema becomes an urban luxury, inaccessible to rural and small-town audiences.

The Solution: PictureTime Digiplex - India's Mobile Digital Movie Theatre

In 2015, entrepreneur Sushil Chaudhary pioneered a game-changing concept: the world's first mobile cinema. Developed with a team of seven in his garage, the idea debuted at the International Film Festival of India in Goa and has since evolved into PictureTime Digiplex-a patented mobile digital movie theatre system that has toured over 600 cities, reaching more than 1.5 million viewers.

PictureTime brings state-of-the-art cinematic experiences directly to underserved audiences using its

patented Acoustic Enabled Inflatable Enclosures (AEIE). These air-conditioned mobile theatres are outfitted with DCI-grade 2K/4K digital projection technology,

Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound systems, Premium pushback seating, and optimal sightline designs for an immersive viewing experience. All of this is delivered at a fraction of the cost required to build a conventional multiplex.

A Multiplex in the Middle of Nowhere

PictureTime does not aim to compete with multiplexes; it aims to reach where multiplexes cannot. In areas where even India's largest cinema chains find it unviable to operate due to high land prices and regulatory hurdles (over 50 permissions needed in some cases), PictureTime sets up full-scale digital theatres in just a few hours. The locations like Leh in Ladakh, Baptala in Andhra Pradesh, Nagaur and Sardarshahr in Rajasthan, Kishtwar in Jammu & Kashmir, Asifabad in Telangana, Khatima in Uttarakhand, Bommidi in Tamil Nadu, Gadchiroli in Maharashtra are running successfully with a great margin of footfall. This result is a cost-

efficient, operationally lean, and high-quality cinema experience, essentially a multiplex without the building.

A Business with a Purpose

Beyond being a scalable business model, PictureTime is a social enterprise with deep cultural ambitions:

•Democratise cinema by making it accessible and affordable to every corner of the country.

•Empower independent filmmakers by offering a transparent, piracy-free theatrical distribution channel.

•Educate and entertain rural masses by setting up entertainment hubs, or 'familyplexes', in remote areas. This model doesn't just stop at the cinema. Envisioned as lifestyle zones, these mobile units also accommodate retail, food services, and community events, fostering economic and cultural development in rural towns.

From Reel to Real: Pandemic-era Innovation

The utility of PictureTime's innovation transcended cinema during the COVID-19 pandemic. In collaboration with Mumbai's Tata Memorial Hospital, PictureTime

adapted its inflatable theatre technology to create rapiddeployment Covid care units, setting up 75 oxygen-bed facilities across India. When hospitals in Delhi were converted into COVIDexclusive facilities, leaving thousands without essential treatments, PictureTime responded swiftly by erecting a 40-bed medical unit at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital within just four days. These acts

exemplify the brand's agility, scalability, and commitment to national service.

National Presence, Global Future

With 19+ state permissions already granted and participation in 10+ film festivals, PictureTime is growing rapidly. Internationally, the company has signed MOUs in Zimbabwe, with plans to expand into Africa and parts of Europe, where similar access gaps exist. The company is also preparing for a presence at global platforms like the Cannes Film Festival, reflecting its readiness to meet global standards in mobile cinematic infrastructure.

A Vision for the Future

Sushil Chaudhary's ambition is audacious yet grounded: to multiply India's box office revenue tenfold in five years. With its mobile-first, technology-driven approach, PictureTime is positioned not just as an Indian innovation but as a global model for democratising cinema. In a country where stories shape society, and cinema is more than entertainment, it's a shared cultural experience. PictureTime is not just bringing films to people; it's bringing dignity, connection, and joy to places long ignored by mainstream entertainment. It's not just a screen, it's a movement.

BREAKING BARRIERS:

SOUTH INDIA'S CINEMATIC RISE

Over the past decade, the cinema industries of South India, primarily the Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu film industries, have transformed, moving from regional powerhouses to panIndian phenomena. What this shift means for the wider Indian film landscape is profound, as it signals new ways of storytelling, distribution, market dynamics and cultural resonance.

The Rise

In recent years, the South Indian film industry, comprising Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema, has quietly but decisively shifted from being regionally confined to becoming national powerhouses. What was once a dynamic of ‘regional films first, perhaps national later’ has been transformed into a model where big southern productions are designed and marketed from the start as pan-Indian events. With enhanced production values, aggressive multilanguage releases, and expanding distribution networks across India and beyond, these industries are reshaping how Indian audiences consume cinema, breaking language barriers, redefining success metrics, and prompting the entire industry to rethink what ‘Indian Cinema’ really means in a nationwide context.

From Regional to National

For long, the phrase ‘Indian Cinema’ tended to be used as shorthand for the Hindi film industry (Bollywood). But the terrains have shifted. As one analysis puts it: "South Indian cinema generated three times the box office revenues of Hindi films" at one point, signalling a dramatic reversal of fortunes. In 2022, the southern region's share of India's theatrical revenue was estimated at 52 %. The catalyst for the shift includes several landmark films. The size, spectacle and ambition of projects such as Baahubali: The Beginning (2015), which can be primarily noted as the one that started this revolution, and subsequently its sequel redefined what Indian regional cinema could achieve. Films like KGF: Chapter 2, RRR and Pushpa: The Rise followed the path of mass appeal, wide dubbing and national release

strategies. Distribution on OTT, aggressive marketing, dubbed versions and wider language versions made the films accessible and attractive to non-traditional audiences.

What Changed in the Industry?

The way audiences engage with Indian cinema has shifted markedly. Viewers today are far less concerned with the original language of a film and instead gravitate toward stories that deliver strong production quality, immersive spectacle, and compelling narratives. In response, filmmakers in the South have recalibrated their approach: narrative arcs, visual effects, marketing campaigns and release timing are all being formulated with a truly national, rather than only regional, audience in mind. Equally significant is the emphasis on multilingual releases. Films are now

routinely dubbed or simultaneously released in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and other languages, positioning them as nationwide cinematic events rather than state-centric premieres. At the same time, enhanced distribution networks, including streaming platforms, have broken down the former geographic constraints, enabling regional films to achieve widespread reach and resonate with audiences across the country.

Redefining Indian Cinema

The influence of this shift is multiple. First, it challenges the notion that Hindi cinema must dominate the national market. The South's rise shows regional industries can lead in scale, ambition and box office returns. It forces a re-examination of what ‘Indian Cinema’ means, not just Bollywood, but a mosaic of powerful regional industries competing and collaborating.

Second, it raises the bar in production values and technical innovation. When films from the south deliver visuals, sound design and scale comparable to global

benchmarks, it pushes the entire industry to evolve. One study emphasised that ‘Pan-Indian South Cinema has also demonstrated a commitment to technical excellence. These technical advancements, matched but also surpassed the standards set by Bollywood previously and compete closely with Hollywood’.

Third, the market logic changes: Distribution strategies, release models, marketing spend, and even star power are now thinking across regions rather than being statecentric. Stars who were once local icons are now national brands. The economics of the film industry are shifting accordingly; regional

industries are pooling resources, creating bigger tent-pole films and expanding into previously unexplored markets.

How Regional Stories Become National Blockbusters?

Films like Kantara: Chapter 1 and Lokah: Chapter 1 - Chandra exemplify how South Indian cinema is successfully traversing beyond regional boundaries to become truly pan-Indian phenomena. Kantara: Chapter 1, released simultaneously in multiple languages, crossed the INR 300 crore mark in India within its first week, with the Hindi and Kannada versions alone nearing INR 100 crore each, and it has

already amassed over INR 400 crore globally. Meanwhile, Lokah: Chapter 1 - Chandra became the highestgrossing Malayalam film of all time by surpassing INR 300 crore worldwide, with approximately INR 180 crore from India (including regional and dubbed versions) and strong overseas earnings. Both films highlight how strategic multilingual releases, wide-scale distribution and ambitious storytelling enable regional projects to capture national audiences and reshape the landscape of Indian cinema. Respectively, films like Su from So, They Call Him OG, Coolie, Retro, L2E Empuraan, Thudarum, Tourist Family, Dragon, Marco, and Kingdom made a huge wave in the Indian box office.

The Layered Reality: Opportunities and Challenges

While the rise in prominence is impressive, it doesn't come without its complexities. Some observers suggest that the ‘pan-India’ appeal of southern films may be fading if distribution, marketing and content strategies don't keep adapting. Indeed, certain films with weaker marketing efforts in Hindi-speaking regions underperformed in recent years. There is also a growing risk

of formula fatigue: as a growing number of films adopt the largebudget mass-appeal action template with wide releases, the very uniqueness that sparked the initial wave of success could be lost. Also, in the effort to appeal to a national audience, the rich regional flavour of these films can sometimes get diluted when they lean too heavily toward universal accessibility rather than preserving local specificity.

Implications for Certain Regions and Beyond

For a city like Bengaluru (in Karnataka), and more broadly for Kannada cinema, the effects are significant. Historically overshadowed by Tamil and Telugu industries, recent Kannada films such as KGF Chapter 2, Kantara: Chapter 1 have broken national barriers and shown that a Kannadalanguage film can have a massive pan-India impact. This opens new possibilities for investment,

distribution and talent retention locally. For audiences and the ecosystem in Karnataka, this shift means more ambitious projects, higher budgets, and access to theatres and streaming platforms beyond regional language boundaries. For exhibitors, this means that films made in Kannada or dubbed into Kannada might reach bigger markets and yield stronger returns. A notable shift in being preferential in entertainment viewership has been seen in Kerala; as films, from every industry, every genre, any language are being accepted only under the criterion of the craft and the content. And thus, marking a thought in the mind of future filmmakers, content and craft can pull the crowd, and if it has a big star cast, then anything can happen.

Looking Ahead

The rising tide of South Indian cinema suggests that the Indian film industry is entering a phase where language walls are weakening and storytelling aspirations are soaring. We might see more collaborations across industries, hybrid financing models, and films that blend regional authenticity with national reach. The challenge will be sustaining this momentum: ensuring strong content, smart marketing, infrastructure for wide release and preserving creative authenticity while scaling. In sum, South Indian cinema's pan-India exposure is not just a trend; it is redefining Indian cinema. It reshapes how we think of ‘Indian’ movies, who makes them, where they go and who watches them. As this evolution continues, every region-based industry (including Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam) will have to think both locally and nationally to succeed, and the audience is definitely the winner in this new era of cinematic plurality.
