MINDS HARE

The film industry in 2025 has shown incredible resilience and innovation, truly making it a year of remarkable evolution. We've seen a powerful return to movie theatres, a wave of new technological advancements, and a string of record-breaking box office hits. Around the world, studios are leading a major shift, investing heavily in immersive experiences and a wider variety of stories. The Indian cinema exhibition industry is in a phase of strategic expansion, with a strong focus on adding new screens to cater to a vast, underserved audience. Major players are not just building new multiplexes but are also adopting innovative models to increase their footprint, particularly in smaller towns and cities. The year has been particularly significant for corporate developments, especially within the Indian cinema sector. A major highlight was Connplex Cinemas' successful IPO listing on the NSE SME platform on August 14. This move is part of the company's strategy to expand its ‘Smart Cinemas’ and acquire high-quality technology, reflecting the industry's focus on upgrading the viewing experience and reaching new markets. This aggressive expansion by major chains like PVR INOX, Cinepolis, Miraj Cinemas and the successful IPO listing of new players like Connplex Cinemas underscores a renewed confidence in the theatrical experience. As these companies introduce more screens and advanced technologies like 4K laser projection, they are actively working to make cinema more accessible and appealing to audiences across the country.

Adding to the global momentum, 2025 saw a significant development for the Latin American cinema market with the launch of CineLatam. This new event is a rebranding and relaunch of the long-standing ShowEast convention, now dedicated to bringing together the Latin American exhibition, distribution, and vendor communities. Scheduled to take place in September at the Loews Coral Gables Hotel in Miami, CineLatam's inaugural edition has garnered strong support from major industry players, including Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, and Sony Pictures. The event focuses on showcasing the latest cinematic technologies, including immersive audio systems and laser projection, and provides a crucial platform for networking and industry growth in a rapidly expanding and vibrant region.

The summer blockbuster season saw several major films dominate the global box office. James Gunn's SUPERMAN was a big win for the DC universe, grossing over $606 million worldwide. The latest instalment in the dinosaur franchise continued its box office reign, with a global take of over $846 million. The new entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe earned over $491 million worldwide, while an August horror film proved to be a surprise hit, grossing over $207 million.

An animated sequel also performed well with a global gross of over $155 million.

The Indian film industry experienced its highest-grossing period of the year, driven by a mix of Bollywood and regional films. July was the strongest month, with a total gross of INR 1,430 crore. The Hindi film SAIYAARA led the charge, grossing INR 392 crore, and the animated feature MAHAVATAR NARSIMHA also performed exceptionally well, with INR 259 crore in collections. In August, a box office battle emerged between two highly anticipated action films. Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR's WAR 2 has amassed a global gross of approximately INR 350 crore, while Rajinikanth's COOLIE has been a massive success, surpassing the INR 500 crore mark globally in just 14 days.

The 8th Big Cine Expo concluded with great success on August 20 in Chennai. This year's event was a major milestone, doubling in size from previous years and attracting a large number of exhibitors and attendees. It served as a vital platform for showcasing the latest cinema technology and fostering crucial industry collaboration. The prestigious IMAX Big Cine Awards also recognised excellence in the exhibition industry, celebrating the best multiplex and single-screen theatres and highlighting the ongoing commitment to quality and innovation. Thanks to the tremendous support we received, we are honoured and grateful to announce that the 9th edition of the Big Cine Expo will return to the Chennai Trade Centre in 2026. We look forward to seeing you there.

HOYTS & IMAX RELAUNCH PARTNERSHIP WITH NEW LOCATIONS ACROSS AUSTRALIA

IMAX and HOYTS Cinemas, one of Australia's leading cinema chains, recently announced a new agreement for up to five state-ofthe-art IMAX with Laser systems throughout Australia. The deal reignites the partnership between the two companies, which have not operated an IMAX location together since 2019. The first new IMAX location is slated to open in Melbourne later in 2025, in advance of the release of 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'. Up to an additional four locations will be identified for future expansion. "As the pioneer of IMAX screens in multiplex cinema in Australia, HOYTS is delighted to partner with IMAX again. Our foundation site at Melbourne Central will be open for 'Avatar: Fire and Ash,' with more sites to be announced shortly," said Damien Keogh, CEO and President of HOYTS Group. "Every one of our cinemas has touch points that elevate them from a usual experience: from the quality of our recliners, through to state-of-the-art technical enhancements. The opportunity to see things on IMAX is going to enhance HOYTS' reputation as the premier destination for film experiences." "Australia continues to be a priority for IMAX, and this agreement with HOYTS Cinemas to expand and diversify our footprint is just the latest sign of our strong momentum in this thriving moviegoing market," said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. "HOYTS is an exceptional, wellestablished exhibitor in Australia and New Zealand, and we're looking forward to getting back in business with the company to further satisfy surging demand for the IMAX Experience." IMAX has seen unprecedented growth in Australia,

driven by strong box office performance and exceptional moviegoer demand. The company's footprint in Australia has grown from just one location in 2022 to four currently in operation and another ten set to open in the next several years. Australia currently ranks as the tenth market overall for IMAX box office - a stellar result from just four locations in the country and ranking behind powerhouse IMAX markets like the U.S., China, Japan and the UK. Last year, IMAX notched its highest grossing year since 2015 in Australia, and the country was the top market overall by per-screenaverage (PSA) for IMAX, with an average of nearly $4.5 million per screen. The deal comes as IMAX continues a hot streak of Filmed for IMAX titles - in Australia, IMAX delivered nearly 6% of last weekend's debut of 'Superman,' despite only having four locations in the country. Earlier this summer, 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' was among the top opening weekends ever for IMAX in Australia, delivering over $400K at the box office. Overall, IMAX indexing in Australia has grown dramatically, going from 2.6% of the overall box office in 2024 to 4.4% in

2025 to date, with several Filmed for IMAX titles to go, including next week's debut of Disney/Marvel's 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps.' The new HOYTS IMAX locations will be equipped with IMAX with Laser, IMAX's most advanced cinema experience. Developed from the ground up for maximum immersion, IMAX with Laser delivers crystalclear 4K images, precision audio, and state-of-the-art projection technology, setting a new standard for moviegoing. The system features a groundbreaking optical engine, custom-designed lenses, and proprietary IMAX technology that delivers brighter images, deeper contrast, and the widest range of colours exclusively to IMAX screens.

WHAT KOREA'S MOVIE VOUCHER CRAZE REALLY REVEALS ABOUT

THE

FILM INDUSTRY

The buzz around the box office this summer isn't just about the latest blockbusters; it's about an unlikely intersection of government initiatives, the cinema industry and audiences. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued 4.5 million vouchers that discount 6,000 won ($4.35) from movie ticket prices in a bid to stimulate domestic spending and revitalise the film industry, a measure that generated an immediate frenzy. The initial days saw websites overwhelmed as millions of coupons were quickly claimed on a first-come, first-served basis. Actor Jo Jung-Suk expressed how hopeful, yet careful, the movie industry felt about the government's new subsidies. With his new film ‘My Daughter Is a Zombie’, Jo said last week that "it felt like heaven was helping us. It's a great start." This surge in public interest offered a beacon for an industry that saw its audience numbers plummet from over 226 million in 2019 to a mere 59 million in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even after movie theatres reopened, the rise of streaming platforms fundamentally shifted viewing habits, leading to fewer film productions and a recent scarcity of box office champions. To secure profitability amid dwindling attendance, multiplex chains steadily raised ticket prices between 2020 to 2022, pushing the average price for a weekend movie ticket from 12,000 won in 2019 to 15,000 won now - another key factor deterring moviegoers. As the summer peak box office season began with these discounts, anticipation for a comeback was

high. However, the ‘coupon craze’ also unveiled some uncomfortable truths as it demonstrated that movie theatres remain an attractive cultural space if the price is right, ultimately highlighting a disconnect between current ticket prices and what consumers are willing to pay. The voucher craze fuelled online debates among those who successfully obtained discounts or those who failed, with participants not only pointing out technical flaws in the government's coupon issuance system but also actively raising more fundamental questions like, "Why don't cinemas just lower prices?" These discussions also show that the industry's struggles weren't due to a lack of interest in movies, but rather the perceived burden of high ticket prices. Despite Numbeo, a cost-of-living statistics website, ranking Korea's cinema price at a modest $10.88 - 34th globally and lower than neighbouring Japan's $12.86 or Switzerland's global-high price of $25.14 - a 2024 Korea Consumer Agency survey revealed that 77.2 percent of 500 multiplex attendees

found ticket prices expensive, reflecting realistic consumer perceptions regardless of international comparison. Since multiplexes raised their ticket prices during the pandemic, a consistent complaint has resonated across online platforms and firmly taken root: Movies are too expensive compared to streaming services, and the quality of the in-theatre experience isn't keeping pace. Ultimately, the discount vouchers are a powerful signal. It clearly shows the public's enduring desire for movie theatre experiences, especially when made more accessible, proving that the big screen still holds a unique allure. Moving forward, the industry faces the pivotal challenge of fostering sustained engagement, not just through temporary promotions but by truly understanding and addressing audience needs. The hope is to see the magic of the big screen once again draw in consistent crowds, revitalising every layer of Korean cinema from production houses to local theatres and securing a vibrant future for the art form.

GDC ACHIEVES INDUSTRY MILESTONE WITH CTP 1.4 HDR CERTIFICATIONS

GDC Technology, a global leader in digital cinema solutions, is proud to announce that two of its cinema media servers have successfully achieved the CTP1.4 High Dynamic Range (HDR) certification from the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) - the industry's most trusted standard. With this milestone, GDC becomes the only media server provider with all HDR products listed on the DCI web portal, reinforcing its position as a leader in cinematic innovation. This achievement highlights GDC's commitment to delivering advanced HDR technology, enabling exhibitors worldwide to achieve unmatched visual quality and exceptional reliability - supported by rigorous 100,000-hour Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) testing. By pushing the boundaries of HDR performance and durability, GDC continues to redefine the future of cinema, ensuring audiences experience brighter, sharper, and more immersive storytelling than ever before. As the globally recognised authority on digital cinema, Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) sets the standard for quality with its Compliance Test Plan (CTP). In response to rapid advancements in display technology, DCI introduced two high-standard specifications: CTP 1.4.1 (April 2024) and CTP 1.4.2 (February 2025). These standards cover both traditional projection and next-generation HDR direct-view LED displays, including classifications for Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) and High Dynamic Range (HDR) performance. The HDR direct-view LED category signifies the highest standard of DCI's requirements, demanding

exceptional performance in: 300-nits peak brightness - to deliver truly immersive HDR experiences, the content standard specifies that on-screen elements - such as the glint of sunlight on a spaceship or the flash of an explosion - must reach 300 nits of brightness. Ultralow grayscale fidelity - to ensure true blacks are rendered without compromise, eliminating unwanted greyish tones in shadows and dark scenes. Higher 4K frame rates - to reduce motion blur and judder in fast-paced sequences, ensuring smooth HDR playback even with quickly moving content. Nearperfect screen uniformity - to guarantee consistent brightness, colour accuracy, and contrast across the entire viewing surface, providing identical visual quality to every seat in the auditorium. Meeting these strict benchmarks demands not only advanced R&D investments but also exceptional technical expertise-a challenge few can overcome. GDC's cinema media servers made history as the first in the industry to earn HDR certification under CTP 1.4.1 and CTP 1.4.2. Powered by GDC's proprietary Flexible Architecture Stable Technology (FAST), these servers deliver 4K 3D and 4K

120fps high-frame-rate playback, Unmatched HDR image processing and colour accuracy,100,000-hour MTBF-certified reliability. Today, GDC is the only global provider of DCI HDR-certified cinema media servers-showing our technological leadership and dedication to advancing cinematic boundaries. This milestone speeds up the global adoption of LED cinema technology, enabling theatres with: Future-proof HDR solutions that satisfy DCI's highest standards, Exceptional visual experiences for audiences, reliable performance trusted by exhibitors. As GDC's HDR media servers are deployed worldwide, theatres can now deliver authentic HDR presentations, immersing audiences in visuals that are brighter, sharper and more lifelike than ever before.

TIMEWAYING UNVEILED DCI

HDR CINEMA SCREEN AT CINEEUROPE

Timewaying Technology, a leading innovator in digital cinema solutions, is set to debut its latest breakthrough at CineEurope 2025: the HeyLED 6-metre 4K cinema screen, now officially certified

under the DCI HDR Direct View standard. This milestone certification not only highlights the screen's industry-leading performance but also confirms its full compliance with Hollywood's most advanced requirements for HDR playback. As the most advanced product in the HeyLED lineup to date, the new 6m screen delivers true High Dynamic Range (HDR) cinema - with exceptional contrast, stunning clarity, and vibrant colour fidelity that bring filmmakers' visions to life as never before.

Beyond Brightness - Engineered for HDR Storytelling

While LED technology is widely known for its impressive brightness - often seen in outdoor billboards and stadium displays exceeding 5,000 nits - cinema demands something entirely different. It's not just about being bright. It's about precision, contrast, and fidelity to the filmmaker's vision. To adapt LED for the cinema environment, HeyLED completely reimagined its system architecture. The result is a display platform that delivers deep blacks, brilliant highlights, and incredibly fine image gradations - all powered by sophisticated grayscale control circuits and advanced calibration software. This engineering leap enables HeyLED to fully support the new High Dynamic Range (HDR) format for cinema, which was formally standardised by Hollywood in 2023 through the DCI CTP 1.4 HDR specification. Our 6-metre screen is among the first in the world to meet this standard - meaning it can faithfully reproduce HDR content exactly as intended by directors, with stunning realism and emotional impact.

A Full-Spectrum LED Portfolio, Now HDR-Certified.

The 6m model is just the beginning. HeyLED is also preparing its 4-metre and 5-metre 4K LED screens for DCI HDR certification, rounding out a complete family of highperformance direct-view cinema displays. BARCO UNVEILS HDR BY BARCO SLATE THROUGH 2025 AND U.S. EXPANSION PLANS

Barco, the global leader in laser cinema, announced the HDR by Barco slate through the end of 2025 alongside U.S. rollout plans that will rapidly increase the domestic footprint of the groundbreaking technology. Regal Cinemas, one of the initial exhibition circuits for Barco's HDR format, is driving the expansion with a commitment to 20 domestic RPX screens by the end of 2025. Moviegoers can also expect additional HDR locations from Texas-based Alamo Drafthouse, which will bring the total number of HDR by Barco-enabled HDR theatres to over 30 by the end of 2025. The upcoming HDR by Barco releases include films that will appeal to all demographics, each selected for their striking cinematography, visual effects or captivating colour palettes that will look stunning in Barco's high dynamic range cinema technology. Additional 2025 titles are still expected to be added from major U.S. studio partners and emerging international filmmakers, including highly anticipated Indian

cinema content from the company's recently announced partnership with Prasad Film Labs. The line-up highlights Barco's commitment to enhancing the cinema experience and delivering a wider creative palette for filmmakers to bring their vision alive on the big screen.

Barco also announced that a new dedicated HDR by Barco facility will be opened in the iconic Glen Glenn Film Centre in Hollywood this July. the opening of Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation's new live-action HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON. Based on the company's patented Lightsteering technology, Barco's approach to cinematic HDR works by strategically redistributing light on screen to produce images with highlights that are over 6x brighter than traditional projection, while retaining rich details in the darks for greater depth, clarity, and range. HDR by Barco delivers expansive creative possibilities for filmmakers, producing a wide colour gamut with high-contrast images that captivate audiences. Moviegoers were first introduced to HDR by Barco last fall as part of a special exhibition series that ran over the 2024 holiday season in select cities. Today, the premium format can be found in cinemas in the U.S., U.K., and India

OMNEX LAUNCHES CINERGY REMOTE MONITORING AND MANAGEMENT PLATFORM ACROSS NEARLY 1,000 SCREENS, UK

Christie partnered with the UK's leading independent cinema provider, Omnex, as it launches the Christie Cinergy platform across its network, equipping nearly 1000 cinema screens with advanced, powerful remote monitoring and

management capabilities throughout the UK and Ireland. From July, Omnex customers began using a new support system built to reduce downtime, making it easier to spot and report issues, and giving teams greater visibility of what's happening on-site. Developed over several years by Christie, Cinergy seamlessly integrates with cinema equipment, regardless of the manufacturer. Cinergy's cloudbased platform consolidates realtime equipment monitoring, content and key tracking, and service ticketing into one intuitive interface. The result: faster resolution times, clearer diagnostics, and improved insight into site performance-for engineers, managers, and operators alike. For cinemas, it means fewer surprises, faster fixes, and-perhaps most importantly-peace of mind. Whether you're running one screen or 20, Cinergy is designed to support uptime, cut operational overhead, and give teams the tools to stay one step ahead. The shared support portal is easy to use, even for non-technical staff, and helps cut through the noise, giving managers a centralised, real-time view of what's working, what's not, and what's next. Simon Tandy, managing director at Omnex, said: "Cinergy gives us something we've never had before-true visibility across the entire cinema estate. It's not just about fixing faults

faster; it's about giving cinemas the confidence that someone's always supporting their technology. We've built this rollout around real operational needs, and I believe it's the most advanced support system now available to UK cinemas. This is what modern, remote service should look like." Darren Briggs, head of technical services at Omnex, added: "We've worked closely with Christie over the last 12 months to ensure it suits our UK and Irish customers. The system has already changed how our engineers operate-technical faults are picked up even earlier, the right people are alerted faster, and we've got more insight into how each system is performing. I'm excited for cinemas to see the difference it makes." Jim Robb, Director of Cinergy sales at Christie, commented: "Omnex has set a new benchmark for how Cinergy can be rolled out to independent cinemas. This isn't just a technical deployment-it's a strategic partnership focused on long-term value, uptime and insight. We're thrilled to see Cinergy becoming part of daily operations across such a large and respected network."

Sean James, EVP, Global Sales and Services at Christie, added: "What Omnex is doing with Cinergy shows how remote monitoring and operational intelligence can empower cinema teams, not replace

them. With this deployment, UK cinemas are gaining a level of control and support that's normally reserved for global circuits. It's a great example of collaboration done right." Omnex has activated the Cinergy platform across its network, making the following tools available to cinemas as part of the new system: Asset tracking for projection and audio systems, System health monitoring with configurable alerts, Key delivery and Trusted Device List (TDL) management, Performance reporting with central log archiving, Ticketing and knowledge management via a shared portal, Mobile access for remote troubleshooting and maintenance, Preventative maintenance tools, Lamp management, Warranty tracking, Business intelligence dashboards for deeper insight. These modules-available individually or in combination-offer cinemas greater visibility and control, helping them stay ahead of issues, save time, and focus on delivering exceptional experiences to audiences. For engineers, the rollout replaces reactive service with alert-driven workflows that cut down delays and guesswork-giving technical teams the right information, faster.

APPLE & IMAX EXPAND PARTNERSHIP FOR FIVE NEW & UPGRADED IMAX WITH LASER LOCATIONS ACROSS U.S.

Apple Cinemas and IMAX Corporation announced an agreement for five IMAX with Laser systems in the United Statesdoubling the current IMAX footprint in Apple Cinemas locations. Under the agreement, IMAX will return to Philadelphia for the first time since 2020 in Apple Cinemas' forthcoming Riverview Plaza - a renovation to the city's highest-

grossing multiplex before it closed in 2020 that will reopen as the largest cinema in the Centre City downtown area. The new IMAX location in Philadelphia is scheduled to open in 2026. The agreement will also include an additional new IMAX system in a location to be identified, as well as IMAX with Laser upgrades to three existing IMAX locations with Apple Cinemas in Maine, New Hampshire and California. The San Francisco, CA location-a favourite among local moviegoers and the site of an existing IMAX location that closed in 2023reopened under Apple Cinemas' ownership earlier this year. All three IMAX locations in the agreement are set for upgrade before the end of 2027. "Our expanded partnership with IMAX marks a bold leap forward in delivering next-generation moviegoing," said Siva Shan, Co-Founder of Apple Cinemas. "White Plains set a new standard for immersive cinema, and with our marquee launch at Riverview Plaza in Philadelphia, we're raising it even higher. This isn't just growth - it's a reimagining of how audiences connect with movies in iconic cities across the country." "IMAX's strong performance at the box office continues to drive demand and create opportunity with exhibitors in North America - particularly strong, well-run regional theatre owners like Apple Cinemas," said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX.

"A number of our locations in Suburban Philadelphia are among

our best performing in the country, so we're excited to return to the city itself in a prime location with a great partner in Apple Cinemas." Apple Cinemas White Plains in New York, which underwent an IMAX with Laser upgrade last year, is already delivering next-level cinematic experiences and has been met with strong audience response. This announcement is the latest in a banner year for IMAX, which has already signed deals for 130 new or upgraded systems so far this year, on par with the 130 signed in all of 2024. This momentum is evident in the reinvigorated North American market, where IMAX has signed agreements with nine new Domestic exhibitor partners in the last two years. The strong results this year have been powered by a knockout slate of films, with major films filmed for IMAX titles ‘Tron: Ares’ and ‘Mortal Kombat 2,’ and highprofile titles like ‘Zootopia 2,’ ‘Wicked: For Good’ and ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ still to come. The agreement doubles IMAX's footprint with Apple Cinemas this year - at the start of 2025, the duo operated three locations across the US, and, inclusive of this deal, will soon operate six locations across six different states. The new and upgraded Apple Cinemas locations will be powered by IMAX with Laser, IMAX's most advanced theatre technology. Designed from the ground up for the most immersive experience, IMAX with Laser offers crystal-clear, lifelike images and precision audio, powered by a groundbreaking 4K laser projection system, a new optical engine, and custom-designed lenses. This proprietary technology delivers brighter images with higher resolution, deeper contrast, and the widest range of colours exclusively for IMAX systems.

SUNSET THEATRE: WESTHAMPTON BEACH'S RADIANT CINEMATIC TREASURE

After years of anticipation and careful planning, this historic moviegoing property has officially reopened, breathing new life into a cherished community institution. Situated at Westhampton Beach, this iconic two-screen cinema, originally established in 1927 as the Hampton Star Theatre, has undergone a comprehensive restoration, reviving its art deco elegance and introducing modern amenities.

Originally opened in 1927, the Hampton Star Theatre soon became a cherished local entertainment hub. After a devastating fire forced its closure in 1933, it was revived in 1947 as the Westhampton Summer Playhouse. Over the years, the venue shifted toward film exhibition, operating under names such as the Westhampton Arts Cinema. It withstood major events like the 1938 hurricane and Superstorm Sandy, but ultimately closed its doors once more in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In April 2022, Enthusiasm LLC-a women-led consortium-purchased the 8,580 sq. ft landmark for USD1.15 million, marching forward with a vision of cultural renewal. Collaborating with architect Nicholas Vero, the team tackled extensive structural upgrades: reinforced framing, a new roof, elevator installation, and modern restroom facilities for full ADA accessibility. During renovation, while also retaining nods to the

theatre's past, they debated names, but ultimately decided to go with Sunset Theatre, a name inspired by the discovery of arches made to look like sunsets when old wooden wall panelling was dismantled in the lobby. The new design embraces its art deco past as the owners restored elegant, old-Hollywood aesthetics. This design element became both an homage to its legacy and a symbol of its rebirth.

Inside the Reimagined Theatre:

Two Intimate Auditoriums: Seats reduced to 141 and 143 per screen, outfitted with plush leather reclining chairs.

Art Deco Revival: Gold accents, velvet drapery, and sparkling chandeliers echo the glamour of 1920s Hollywood.

Spacious Lobby: A stylish concession area with café tables offers a welcoming atmosphere before screenings

Sunset Social Club: A standout feature of the revival is the secondfloor Sunset Social Club-a full bar and small-plates lounge. Open yearround, it aims to be a cultural hub where moviegoers can mingle and enjoy live weekend music.

The theatre's reopening line-up bridges modern releases and curated classics. Opening weekend featured The Legend of Ochi alongside a diverse repertory including E.T., The Iron Giant, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Bridesmaids, The Fifth Element, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Pulp Fiction.

Driven by a philosophy that smalltown cinemas anchor cultural vitality, the founders aim for the theatre to function as a social

•SPECIAL

nexus. They envision date nights, musical nights, family outings, solo escapes, and teen-friendly eveningsall enabled within a warm, inclusive environment. The ribbon-cutting event on April 25 featured free popcorn, and the historical society honoured the renovation with a preservation award-recognising the blend of heritage and modern design. While owned by Enthusiasm

LLC, the theatre is being operated by Sunset Theatre LLC, which promises to collaborate closely with a forthcoming non-profit arts organisation to bring special programs, film education and community-driven cinema initiatives to Westhampton Beach. Sunset Theatre marks a triumphant cultural resurgence for Westhampton Beach-a cinema that honours its storied past while embracing a vibrant future. Whether you're attending a film premiere or sipping cocktails at the bar, this newly revived venue invites audiences to rediscover the magic of the big screen and the shared joy of coming together.

"What kept us going throughout this project was a deep belief that small-town or village movie theatres have a uniquely positive impact on their communities. They contribute to the cultural and social heartbeat of a village and make it more vibrant and engaged, it was important to us to revive the space with charm and character. We hoped to create an experience that felt personal and inviting, distinct from the corporate, high-volume feel of larger cinema venues. That intention guided every design decision, from the materials we selected in the screening rooms to the layout of the concession stands."

Alamo Drafthouse was founded in Austin, TX by Tim and Karrie League, who were driven by a simple passion for watching movies and enjoying food and beer. Their first theatre at 409 Colorado Street was a hand-built one-screen operation that initially featured second-run titles at discount rates. The Leagues' passion for programming quickly soared past the standard repertory theatre midnight fare.

Soon, what was once a nondescript parking garage became a hub for cinephiles far beyond Central Texas. Within its first year, the venue was playing host to film premieres and visiting filmmakers. Over the years, the original Colorado Street location became a laboratory for more innovative programming and events, and the Leagues began opening more and larger theatres that

offered a fresh mix of Hollywood product and indie fare.

Today, Alamo Drafthouse has dozens of locations across the United States, with many more to come. Each location is managed with the same dedication and careful regard to film-inspired food and drink, crystal-clear visual and audio presentation, and deliriously fun special events, all inspired by those first years at Colorado Street.

With state-of-the-art amenities and cutting-edge technologies never seen here before, it represents a bold leap forward for entertainment in the region. Most notably, it is the first cinema in Sri Lanka to deploy a full laser projection system in all three of its screens.

Wattala, Sri Lanka, is now home to a new benchmark in cinematic entertainment with the grand opening of Ram Cinemas. This ambitious project, spearheaded by the promoters Ponnambalam Ramanathan and Gokulaharshan Ramanathan introduce a host of cutting-edge technologies and luxurious amenities, many of which

are firsts for the island nation.

The meticulous design and execution of a complete turnkey project were overseen by V. Ravindran, a renowned Digital Cinema Consultant.

"I built Ram Cinemas on what was once the Nilmini Theatre site, and I’m extremely proud of what we’ve created. It now features three auditoriums, designed by an Indian consultant who fused Indian cultural elements with global cinema standards. My deepest thanks go to Mr. V. Ravindran, a Chennai-based digital cinema consultant with 35 years of experience, including 13 years as Technical Director for Fox Theatres in Nairobi. Without charging a fee, his creative vision shaped everything from the acoustics and seating to the concessions and ticketing. His contribution was pivotal in bringing Ram Cinemas to life – a place I believe will be celebrated in Sri Lanka’s cinematic history."

– Harshan Ramanathan, Founder, Ram Cinemas

The architectural vision for Ram Cinemas was brought to life by V. Ravindran with the working drawings meticulously crafted by Arris Architects. This collaborative effort has resulted in a modern and inviting space designed to enhance every aspect of the moviegoing experience.

One of the most significant innovations at Ram Cinemas is its state-of-the-art projection system. It proudly stands as the first cinema in Sri Lanka to feature a full laser projection system across all three of its screens. Screen 1 offers an unparalleled visual feast with a

"It was a privilege to conceptualise and design Ram Cinemas, set on the picturesque site where the Nilmini Theatre once stood. This cinema complex includes three beautifully designed auditoriums, designed with a vision to create an unrealistic cinematic experience. Guided by my deep-rooted knowledge of advanced cinematic standards and influenced by Indian cultural aesthetics, I designed every element-from seating and acoustics to concessions and ticketing layout. It was an honour to contribute my creative vision free of charge, thanks to my relationship with the founder's family. I firmly believe Ram Cinemas will earn its place in Sri Lanka's cinematic legacy."

BARCO SP4K-15C LASER projector, while Screens 2 and 3 are equipped with BARCO SP2K-9S LASER projectors. V. Ravindran also served as the server integrator, ensuring seamless operation of these advanced systems, with projectors sourced from Cinemeccanica, Milan. The visual excellence extends to the screens themselves. Ram Cinemas proudly features Harkness screens, another pioneering installation in Sri Lanka. Screen 1 boasts the advanced HARKNESS CLARUS XC 170, renowned for its exceptional brightness and contrast. Screens 2 and 3 utilise HARKNESS DS PERLUX screens, known for their excellent light uniformity. For an immersive three-dimensional experience, the cinema is equipped with the cuttingedge GETD GK 880 UHB 3D System, promising vibrant and realistic visuals.

The auditory experience at Ram Cinemas is equally impressive. Screen 1 immerses audiences in the unparalleled multidimensional sound of Dolby Atmos, a first for the country. Screens 2 and 3 deliver powerful and clear audio with Dolby 7.1 surround sound. Further solidifying its commitment to superior audio, Ram Cinemas is the first in Sri Lanka to install

Dolby CP950 in all screens. The entire speaker system across all screens is uniformly high-quality, provided by KCS.

Comfort is paramount at Ram Cinemas, with luxurious seating provided by Pen Workers, Mumbai. Screen 1 accommodates 352 patrons, while Screen 2 has 152 seats, and Screen 3 offers 154 seats. The interior design further enhances the cinematic ambience. Cove lighting, supplied by local vendors, creates a sophisticated atmosphere. The flooring combines elegant tile carpets and durable linoleum, ensuring both aesthetics and practicality.

A crucial element often overlooked but vital for sound quality is acoustics. Ram Cinemas is the first in Sri Lanka to implement anutone acoustics panelling, with the acoustical material supplied by Anutone Acoustics, Bengaluru. This ensures optimal sound distribution and minimises unwanted echoes, providing a truly immersive audio experience.

Beyond the screening rooms, Ram Cinemas also prioritises

"Ram Cinemas passion for excellence in cinema acoustics was palpable in their choice of ceiling and panelling design including products that perfectly complemented their cutting-edge audio equipment for an immersive experience that makes them a toast of Sri Lanka"

convenience for its patrons. Concession equipment is supplied by Goldmedal, USA, offering a premium selection of snacks and beverages. Ticketing services are efficiently managed by VISTA, streamlining the entry process. Ram Cinemas is more than just a movie

theatre; it represents a new chapter in Sri Lankan entertainment, setting unprecedented standards in technology, comfort, and overall cinematic excellence. Its numerous 'firsts' position it as a trailblazer in the region, promising an unforgettable experience for every moviegoer.

“In designing the Ram cinemas in Sri Lanka, we embraced simplicity as the most powerful design tool. Instead of layering the space with ornamentation, we allowed bold colours, sharp geometric forms, and integrated LED lighting to become the architecture itself. This minimalistic approach avoids over-design, creating an atmosphere where restraint and drama coexist. Light and colour choreograph the cinematic journey, ensuring that the interiors heighten the anticipation of storytelling without overshadowing it.”

– Satish Shetty, Co-Founder, Arris Architects

ODEON LUXE NORTHAMPTON:

A NEW ERA OF CINEMA COMFORT AND CLASS

Bringing luxury cinema to the heart of the Midlands, the cinema has opened its doors at the former Cineworld site in Sixfields, which closed earlier this year. The transformation ushers in a new chapter for Northampton's filmgoers, replacing the familiar with a first-class viewing experience that combines premium comfort, elegant design, and cutting-edge cinema technology.

ODEON Luxe Northampton features over 700 luxury reclining seats spread across nine impeccably designed screens. Each seat offers three times the standard legroom, enhanced personal space, and plush comfort, ensuring a deeply immersive yet relaxing experience. Select auditoriums also feature VIP

Beds-redefining the traditional front-row seating as 'the biggest seat in the house'. The theatre also boasts an impressive XL screen, giving audiences a larger-than-life spectacle for the most epic movie moments.

Style Meets Convenience

Set within a modern leisure complex, the cinema pairs its sophisticated design with a guestfirst approach. Visitors can take advantage of free on-site parking, streamlining their trip and making each visit hassle-free. The venue's refined aesthetic, from curated interiors to ambient lighting, pays

subtle homage to Hollywood's Golden Age while maintaining a clean, modern edge.

More than just a theatre, ODEON Luxe Northampton is a full-service entertainment destination. Guests can indulge in an elevated food and beverage menu, including loaded potato tots, gourmet nachos with cheese sauce, fresh pizza, and the essential popcorn. Looking Ahead: Phase Two Expansion

The grand opening marks only the beginning. Phase Two will introduce ODEON's signature Luxe Suite concept-an ultra-premium cinema experience offering exclusive two-seater Luxe Pods designed for private, cosy viewing. This next phase will also see the addition of a full Costa Coffee outlet within the cinema, enhancing the leisure offering for guests who enjoy a pre- or post-show treat.

This expansion also brings a boost to the local economy, with 35 new host roles being created as part of ODEON's growing commitment to the Northampton community. The cinema has also retained several former Cineworld staff and brought in experienced team members from ODEON Kettering.

With its blend of comfort, innovation, and customer-first amenities, ODEON Luxe Northampton is poised to become a cornerstone of the region's cultural life. Whether you're escaping for a solo matinee, enjoying date night, or catching a weekend blockbuster with the family, the experience promises indulgence, ease, and cinematic magic.

"We're really excited. So we're actually opening phase one, which is five screens, and then we've got the four remaining screens opening that follows. It's been quite a quick turnaround. We were really keen to get this open for the community as soon as possible. We started in January and as I say, so that we could get it open, we've done it in two phases. It's been pretty major and as you can see, it looks amazing. So yeah, we're really, really happy with it. We know that there's a community here that love going to the cinema. We saw an opportunity and yeah, we're really happy to be part of that local community and hopefully enhancing that."

19-20 AUGUST 2025

CHENNAI TRADE CENTRE, CHENNAI, INDIA

Big Cine Expo 2025 was held from August 19-20 at the Chennai Trade Centre, returning as Asia's premier convention for the cinema exhibition industry. The event combined a tradefloor for B2B activity with a rigorous convention schedule that included panels, studio presentations, an awards ceremony, and key insights from industry veterans. The event cemented its role as an indispensable forum for theatre owners, technology vendors, distributors and post-production experts. Big Cine Expo, with its commitment towards the exhibition industry, has put forward yet another embellishing event, marking its presence as the pillar for the cinema exhibition industry.

Exhibitions & Product Launches

In this edition, technology partners were put in the spotlight. The main screening theatre was driven by high-end projection systems, used both for keynote presentations and film screenings, while the exhibition booths emphasised advanced display solutions designed to improve image uniformity, brightness, and reduce operating costs over time. Live comparative demonstrations played a major role. Attendees were able to visit dedicated demo rooms in which various projector-screen combinations were shown under realistic cinema conditions, allowing them to see differences in highlight brightness, edge-to-centre uniformity, and overall visual consistency. Among the most eagerly watched reveals was a new HDR grading suite in a large-format DI facility with a very long throw screen - offering visual proof that what happens in post-production can be trusted to carry over into high-brightness theatrical

exhibition. The trade show also included immersive viewing booths, frequent side-by-side demonstrations, plus plenty of opportunity for attendees to test and compare setup times, transport and installation logistics, and durability under experiential usage.

Key Themes & Panel Discussions

Beyond hardware, Big Cine Expo leaned further this year into business, sustainability, and audience experience. With a curated list of panellists and moderators, the panel discussions ignited new

and fresh thoughts in the delegates and industry people for the betterment of the exhibition industry. Panels addressed current priorities in the exhibition: how to bring audiences back, evolving business models, upgrading singlescreen cinemas, immersive formats (including HDR/VDR/LED), and strategies for monetisation via F&B, advertising, loyalty programs and better content formats. The technical sessions, such as the ‘HDR, VDR & Direct View Display (LED) in cinemas’ session, bridged engineering and commercial concerns, exploring readiness,

standards, and the cost-benefits of upgrading projection infrastructure.

Emerging Trends & Implications

Several developments at this year's expo pointed towards rapidly shifting priorities in the industry. First, premium projection technology, especially RGB laser and HDR workflows, is becoming less of a ‘nice to have’ and more of a differentiator. Facilities like the new HDR by Barco suite at Prasad show that post-production and mastering infrastructure is catching up to exhibition hardware. Second, operating cost, sustainability, and total lifecycle cost are now frontand-centre in the value proposition of projection and screen equipment. Energy efficiency, ease of maintenance, and lower ‘hidden’ costs are influencing buying decisions more than ever. Third, flexibility in screen and projection infrastructure, foldable or modular screens, better transportability, and quick installation, is gaining traction, useful for pop-ups, mobile cinemas, refurbishment, or special event screenings. Fourth, the full audience experience is increasingly seen as the battleground. Visuals, sound, content format, immersive experiences, and ancillary revenue (F&B, ads, loyalty) are no longer secondary; they are essential to sustaining cinema as a business in competition with streaming and home-theatre options. Adopting the present and foreseeing the future technological aspects was done through networking, both for singlescreen theatre owners and multiplex owners.

Technical Highlight

The HDR by Barco/Prasad initiative deserves special mention. Prasad Film Labs, in collaboration with Barco, has unveiled India's first HDR

by Barco colour grading facility in Chennai. It features a Barco LS4K-P+ HDR Lightsteering projector, an HDR Lightbox, and a vast 51-foot screen with India's longest throw distance in a Digital Intermediate suite. This setup enables filmmakers, colourists and post production facilities to accurately grade content for HDR theatrical display. Several highprofile projects are already underway using this facility. Additionally, Barco has been expanding its HDR footprint in southern Asia, entering into partnerships to bring a significant number of HDR-enabled screens in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh in the coming years.

The Journey Ahead

Big Cine Expo 2025 delivered more than just product launches; it signalled that the cinema exhibition industry in Asia is entering a phase of more mature technological adoption, where visual fidelity, sustainability, and operational efficiency matter as much as novelty. Theatre owners, content creators, vendors, and post production houses were all given practical takeaways: which technologies are becoming viable, what standards are needed, how to manage the financial trade-offs of upgrading, and how to enhance audience experience and revenue beyond ticket sales. As the industry evolves, future iterations of Big Cine Expo will likely benefit from deeper case studies of theatre upgrades, richer alignment between content creators and display technology, and more accessible offerings for smaller or non-metro operators. The technical horizon is promising-premium projection, HDR workflows, and immersive formats are no longer just aspirational, but increasingly operational realities.
