BARCO AND PRASAD UNVEIL INDIA'S FIRST HDR PROJECTION COLOR GRADING FACILITY

Barco and Prasad Film Labs unveiled India's first HDR by Barco Color Grading Facility.

The collaboration will assist with cinema post-production and expand the availability of expertly graded HDR content. Prasad's grading suite is powered by Barco's HDR Lightsteering technology toolkit, including the Barco HDR Lightbox and Barco LS4K-P HDR Lightsteering projector. The integrated system allows for a seamless grading process and quality control, ensuring that the filmmaker's vision is both brought to life in post-production and presented correctly onscreen at cinemas.

Prasad's Chennai studio is home to Asia's first, and the world's largest, HDR by Barco color grading suite. The facility, which features a massive 51-foot screen and India's longest throw distance in a DI (Digital Intermediate) suite, offers a creative environment for filmmakers to see their stories come alive in a premium theatrical setting. Prasad's post-production studio opens as HDR by Barco's cinema footprint in the region is expanding. Growth is particularly strong in India through

new partnerships with Qube Cinema and TDI to bring as many as 80 new HDR by Barco screens to the market over the next five years. Two major upcoming blockbusters have already begun grading for HDR at Prasad's facility, with a strong line-up of high-profile projects slated through the upcoming months.

Prasad's HDR Colour Grading facility highlights include BARCO LS4K-P+ HDR Laser Projector with a custom Barco HDR Lightbox for true HDR color grading, Baselight Version 6, a 51ft screen and India's longest throw distance in a DI suite, HDR mastering for precise visual fidelity and premium theatrical presentation, future-ready deliverables for OTT, broadcast, and satellite networks. "At Prasad, our legacy has always been about staying ahead of the curve in film technology. With the launch of India's first HDR by Barco laser projection color grading facility, we are providing the best-in-class infrastructure for filmmakers to achieve their artistic vision with the utmost accuracy. Our partnership with Barco ensures that we

continue leading the post-production industry with cutting-edge solutions. The early momentum and strong lineup of major projects already underway speak volumes about the demand for this breakthrough," said Abhishek Prasad Akkeneni, the Chief Technology Officer of Prasad Film Labs. "At Barco, we believe HDR is cinema's most profound leap forward since the advent of colour, transforming storytelling into cinematic perfection for cinephiles everywhere. Yet it is the artists, filmmakers, colourists, and storytellers who truly bring this expanded palette of vibrant colours and nuanced shades of darkness and brightness to life. Our role is humbly to provide them the creative tools to fully realise their vision on the big screen, and every time we see their work, we're amazed by the beauty and emotion they achieve. Through our partnership with Prasad, a pioneer deeply rooted in India's rich cinematic heritage, we take another meaningful step toward fulfilling our mission of keeping spectacular cinema accessible to all," said Gerwin Damberg, the Executive Vice President of Barco Cinema.

This announcement underscores our commitment to advancing cinematic storytelling, working closely with filmmakers, studios, and exhibitors to deliver extraordinary entertainment experiences. "A crucial step in bringing Dolby Cinema to India has been ensuring filmmakers have access to a world-class post-production facility. In addition to 24 Dolby Atmos theatrical mix facilities in India, Dolby recently collaborated with Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad to set up India's first Dolby Vision Colour Grading Facility for cinema, empowering Indian filmmakers with cutting-edge tools to enhance their visual storytelling.

TDI - BARCO INK DEAL TO BRING 30 PREMIUM HDR BY 2027

Barco, the global leader in laser-powered cinema solutions, and The Digital Infra (TDI) announced a strategic agreement to deploy HDR by Barco in up to 30 premium cinema screens across India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh by 2027. The deal marks a major milestone in Barco's rollout of its next-generation HDR with Lightsteering technology in the region and positions India as the third global market to adopt the new format, following launches earlier this year in the U.S. and U.K. HDR by Barco will make its regional debut at Sri Melody Theatre in Vizag, which is currently in its demonstration phase in advance of the grand opening planned for later this summer. Dr. Atluri, the owner of Sri Melody, and his family made the bold decision to bring this cutting-edge technology to India, inspired by the striking visual clarity and contrast that sets HDR by Barco apart from other premium formats. "The Digital Infra (TDI) is proud to collaborate with Barco in bringing their exceptional HDR technology to Sri Melody Theatre," said Kamalakannan Duraikannu, Director of TDI. "This venue is an ideal showcase outside the U.S. and U.K. for such a breakthrough format, giving Indian audiences access to a superior cinematic experience with enhanced brightness, deep black levels, and remarkable on-screen impact." "We're thrilled to partner with TDI to bring HDR by Barco to audiences across India and the region," said Anders Ballestad, Co-Inventor of HDR Light-steering and Barco's Head of Content and Studio Relations.

KOCHI'S

ENTERTAINMENT SCENE EXPANDS WITH

NEW MULTIPLEX OPENINGS

The entertainment sector will receive a major boost with several multiplex theatres expected to come up in the city and its suburbs soon. Besides the existing more than half a dozen major multiplex theatres in different shopping malls, at least four more multiplex theatres will come soon. A noted theatre group based in Kochi will launch a new four-screen multiplex at Kakkanad soon, and another multiplex will be opened in an upcoming major shopping mall at Willingdon Island. A four-screen multiplex theatre will come up at Cochin International Airport (CIAL) in Nedumbassery, and a new multiplex will be opened on Chittoor Road soon. A new multiplex is proposed as part of the Chithranjali project in Kakkanad. The twin theatres of Lulu and Mymoon, which closed down 15 years ago, on Chittoor Road, will be reopened within four months. They will be revived as a multiplex theatre by Lulu Group in collaboration with PVR Cinemas. The theatre complex is situated on around 2 acres of prime land. Mohanlal's Mahasamudram was the last major release at the theatre.

The new project will be a standalone theatre project by PVR group with four to five screens, including a PXL screen, it is learned. HiLITE will set up its screens at its Boulevard project near Thoppumpady under its theatre brand 'Palaxi Cinemas'. The new multiplex to come up at Cial's proposed mall in the airport compound is in the initial stage of discussions. "Cinema halls, both multiplexes and traditional theatres, have successfully drawn substantial audiences over the last year, contributing to the rapid expansion of multiplexes across urban areas. While multiplex operators face significant challenges and losses in various states due to film industry difficulties, their operations in Kerala continue to generate substantial profits," said K Vijayakumar, President of Film Exhibitors United Organisations of Kerala (Feuok). Besides new ones, many theatres are planning major facelifts in the coming months. There are reports of Dolby Laboratories planning to launch Dolby Cinema Screens at an existing multiplex theatre in Fort Kochi. One of the oldest theatre complexes in

the city, Saritha, Savitha and Sangeetha, is under renovation and will be modernised soon. In December last year, Cinepolis opened the first IMAX screen in Kochi, at Centre Square Mall on MG Road. The theatre, with seating for 229, has 4K laser projection and a patented sound system.

"The multiplex boom indicates an increase in the city's economic growth. Kochi has the highest number of screens, and new theatres opening is expected to give a boost to the city's growth as the capital of Mollywood," said Arjun Prakash of Kochi Next Forum Collective. The growth of malls has often been closely tied to the rise of multiplexes, as both benefit from increased visitor traffic. Notably, several once-prestigious malls across the state that lack multiplexes are now struggling, with top retailers shutting down. As the middle class continues to grow, more multiplexes are likely to emerge in the city and its suburbs. However, the key to their sustained success lies in the consistent performance of the films they screen.

AAMIR KHAN ADVOCATES FOR EXPANDING THEATRICAL INFRASTRUCTURE AT WAVES 2025,

MUMBAI

At the WAVES 2025 Summit in Mumbai, Aamir Khan, one of India's most celebrated actors, voiced his concerns about the country's insufficient number of movie theatres during a panel discussion titled ‘Studios of the Future: Putting India on World Studio Map.’ Khan, who has always been a vocal advocate for the growth of the

Indian film industry, compared India's theatre infrastructure to that of global powerhouses like the US and China, pointing out the vast disparity in the number of movie screens available to the population. Khan highlighted a significant gap in cinema access, stating that while India boasts a population of over 1.4 billion people, the country has just about 10,000 screens. In comparison, the US, with one-third of India's population, has approximately 40,000 screens, and China leads the pack with 90,000.

"For a country of our size, with the love we have for films, 10,000 screens are insufficient," Khan remarked, stressing that only a small portion of the nation's population, roughly 2%, gets to experience blockbuster films in theatres. The actor further emphasised the need for investment in cinema infrastructure, especially in rural and underserved areas. He pointed out that the biggest cinematic hits in India, across all languages, reach just a small fraction of the population. With his usual candour, Khan said, "If we don't have enough screens in India, people will only hear about films but won't be able to watch them. The country has huge untapped potential, but we can only realise that by expanding our theatrical presence." Khan's comments come at a time when the Indian film industry is experiencing

unprecedented global recognition. At WAVES 2025, which brings together over 10,000 delegates from 90 countries, discussions on enhancing India's entertainment infrastructure are more relevant than ever. Khan's call for increased investment in theatres echoes the sentiment that for India to truly lead on the world stage, the country must first ensure that every film lover has access to the magic of cinema.

NEW AGE EXHIBITOR SUSHIL CHAUDHARY BREAKS DOWN THEATRICAL CRISIS AFTER SRK,

AAMIR KHAN PROPOSE SOLUTIONS FOR ENTERTAINMENT

Chaudhary revealed how he innovatively screened Kabir Khan's 83 in Ladakh during the pandemic, drawing audiences despite 50% occupancy limits. Days after superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan suggested building more theatres and offering cheaper

ticket rates to the audience, new age exhibitor Sushil Chaudhary says the Indian theatrical ecosystem can be revived by focusing on making cinemas more ‘Accessible and Affordable,’ like what he does with his mobile digital movie theatre company, PictureTime. At the WAVES 2025 summit, Chaudhary was part of the panel discussion 'Decline in the Theatrical Industry and Sparse Cinema Distribution', where he reflected on the need to mount more cinemas and how he runs a model of setting up inflatable theatres in remote regions, where people have no access to movies. "I was happy to hear what Shah Rukh said regarding the need for more cinemas and cheaper tickets. Cinema is all about affordability, accessibility, and entertainment. After Roti, Kapda, Makaan, Cinema is the basic need. When we build our cinema, the focus is on keeping the capital cost under INR 1 crore and operational cost under INR 2 lakhs," Chaudhary, Founder & CEO of Picturetime, said. Chaudhary revealed how he innovatively screened Kabir Khan's 83 in Ladakh during the pandemic, drawing audiences despite 50% occupancy limits. Similarly, in

Bommidi, a small town in Tamil Nadu, he set up a screen showcasing Vikram's Veera Dheera Sooran, which now boasts over 56% occupancy, highlighting the enduring appeal of cinema. "Movies like Pathaan, Gadar 2 and Jawan did very well on our screens in remote regions. Especially Gadar 2, which wasn't promoted that much, but we had more than INR 5 lakh collection every week from a 140-seater screen. The audience is willing to come. Like in Telangana's Asifabad, which didn't have a cinema hall for over three decades, we installed one during SS Rajamouli's RRR, and today the average occupancy there is 30 per cent. As Shah Rukh said, we need cheaper cinemas so that people can access our films. Disruption can happen then," he added. During the panel discussion, which was hosted by actor-filmmaker Vivek Vaswani, Chaudhary also highlighted the need for ‘Clever Programming’ and answered why exhibitors often screen old films or are eager to showcase a re-release movie. "The reason cinema hall owners like us screen old films is that the current distribution system is dated. We are forced to run one movie under multiple conditions, even if the film is not attracting the audience. So, clever programming is an answer. We re-release old films to optimise revenue. In interiors, I have seen that viewers watch a film as many as 40 times. Are we catering to them? "Between 80s and 90s, we had 18,000 cinema screens and 21,000 were running licenses, but then there was a decline. Filmmakers also need to address how to avoid piracy, because every year we lose 3 billion dollars due to piracy. The big issues remain accessibility, affordability and outreach," he added.

ACTORS ANANT

NAG, SHOBANA, ASHOK SARAF AND OTHERS CONFERRED WITH PADMA AWARDS

The Indian entertainment industry witnessed a historic event as many artists were conferred with Padma Awards by President Droupadi Murmu on May 27. Veteran actors Ashok Saraf, Anant Nag, Indian composer and three-time Grammy winner Ricky Kej and actress-dancer Shobana Chandrakumar Pillai were amongst the recipients at the Padma Awards 2025. Actors

Anant Nag and Ashok Laxman Saraf received Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, respectively, from the President of India. Musician Ricky Kej was also conferred the Padma Shri for his exemplary work. Actress Shobana Chandrakumar was honoured with the Padma Bhushan for her contribution to art. Late singer Sharda Sinha was awarded the Padma Vibhushan posthumously in the Art category as well. On April 28, the first phase of the award ceremony took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. Nandamuri Balakrishna, Ajith Kumar, Shekhar Kapur and many others received their Padma Bhushan awards last month. Other Padma Bhushan Awardees were Pankaj Udhas (Singer) - Art (Posthumous honour).

Other Padma Vibhushan Awardees were Kumudini Rajnikant Lakhia (Indian dancer and choreographer), Art. Other Padma Shri Awardees: Barry John (Theatre Actor, Director and Acting Coach). On receiving India's highest civilian honour from President Murmu, Ricky, in an interview with Hindustan Times, said, "The moment I received the Padma Award, it was a complete blur. Once my name was called out, I decided to collect the award barefoot. It felt like I was in a temple. So many unsung heroes were being celebrated, people working on the grassroots and just going about their amazing work in various fields with little pomp and show. To be among them was overwhelming for me." Actor Manoj Bajpayee shared a heartfelt note dedicated to his mentor Barry John on social media and wrote, "My Guru, Barry John, my guiding light! He was the first one to see the potential in me, to trust me with responsibilities that shaped my journey. His unwavering faith in me has been the cornerstone of who I am today. It's a moment of immense pride and gratitude to see him being honoured with the Padma Shri, a recognition truly deserved!"

ANURAG KASHYAP HIGHLIGHTS

SS RAJAMOULI'S

GLOBAL RECOGNITION AND PRAISES MALAYALAM CINEMA

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, known for his outspoken takes on cinema, censorship, and industry trends, has weighed in on the current state of Indian cinema. He also compared the growing international cult around SS Rajamouli, particularly after the global success of RRR, to that of Korean auteur

Bong Joon ho. "With Rajamouli, there is a whole audience of him that's getting built since Eega internationally. That's the same phenomenon with, say, Bong Joon ho. He broke it with Parasite, but his best film was Memories of Murder," he explained. "See, Baahubali couldn't break out because of its duration and length, but yes, every cinephile across the world has seen it. RRR, length-wise, duration-wise, was perfect, with fewer songs and more action sequences. It was bound to become that breakout film for Rajamouli." He recalled predicting the film's success even before its release:

"I said it much before RRR was released, that RRR will be that film that will break out from India because it was building up. I know that because I travel to film festivals. I've had filmmakers from Belgium, from Switzerland, from across wanting to know more about Rajamouli. I know two filmmakers who made Blood for Dracula, and one more. They came down to Mumbai, and I took permission from Rajamouli, and they visited the sets of RRR and spent one week there." According to him, Eega introduced Rajamouli to the international filmmaking community, Baahubali made him a name among cinephiles, and RRR expanded his reach far beyond those circles. "He first became big in the filmmaking world with Baahubali, then larger in

cinephilia, and with RRR, he reached out to the audience beyond cinephilia and the filmmaking world," he told Baradwaj Rangan in an interview. Anurag also praised the ongoing evolution of Malayalam cinema, likening it to the rise of Korean cinema in the late '90s and early 2000s. "There's a new Malayalam cinema that I find parallels with Korean cinema, like how Korean cinema was evolving in the late '90s and early 2000s.

SHOLAY CELEBRATES

50 YEARS WITH INDEPENDENCE DAY

RE-RELEASE

Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra starrer cult classic is finally returning to theatres!

The film, which is a cult classic, is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary, and to mark this special occasion, the makers will re-release it in cinema halls on

August 15, 2025. Dialogues like "Ye haath humko de do Thakur", "Yahaan se pachaas-pachaas kos door jab bachcha rota hai..." and "Tumhara naam kya hai, Basanti?" have secured a space in cine buffs' hearts over a long period of time. Sholay's epic star cast, songs and dialogues are still fresh in people's minds, irrespective of the fact that the film was released years ago. This revival offers fans, both old and new, a chance to witness the magic of Sholay in a theatre once again, many for the very first time. According to a Bollywood Hungama report, a source revealed that the timing couldn't be better. "We are living in the era of re-releases, and Sholay has a fan base across all age groups. Many young audiences have never seen it on the big screen, and this re-release is set to change that. Whenever Sholay has returned to theatres, it has been wellreceived, be it in 2004 for its 30th anniversary or in 2014, when it was released in 3D." What's truly exciting this time is the scale of the restoration and a potential game-changing surprise. The film is currently being restored in 4K, and if plans work out, the makers intend to include the film's original ending, which was originally shot by Director Ramesh Sippy but never shown in theatres.

ANNAPURNA STUDIOS DEBUTS INDIA'S FIRST DOLBY VISION POST-PRODUCTION FACILITY

Dolby Atmos has been a household name in India for years. If you've recently bought a smartphone, laptop, or smart TV, it probably comes with Dolby Atmos support. The best part is that we can now experience Dolby Vision and Atmos in live sports events like the recently concluded Champions Trophy, which India lifted in 2025, and Wimbledon, transforming how fans experience live events at home. Of course, you still need a Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, enabled device to enhance your viewing experience. At the same time, you can find over 1,000 Dolby Atmos screens and plenty of content to consume online. Dolby is already working on its next big frontier and has collaborated with Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad to bring up India's first Dolby-certified facility for cinema and home. The collaboration not only opens up new horizons for studios but also prioritises the needs of filmmakers. Ashim Mathur, Vice President, Marketing for APAC at Dolby Laboratories, while discussing Dolby Vision, stated that the company is already working on an outreach programme that will help spread the word. Speaking on the collaboration with Annapurna Studios, Mathur added that facilities like this will help bring filmmakers' vision to life, and the right cinemas will help users consume such content the way it is intended. Dolby Vision post-production facility: Technical details, mixing rundown Talking about technical aspects, particularly Dolby Vision and HLG, a Dolby engineer explained that Dolby Vision uses PQ, short for Perceptual Quantizer, for HDR, offering a dynamic range 40x brighter and 10x darker than the standard dynamic range. Hybrid log

gamma technology, or long for HLG, developed by DVC and NHK, is suitable for broadcast and OTT platforms, but it has a lower contrast ratio when compared to PQ.

The engineer also talked about the importance of colour correction software like Baselight and DaVinci Resolve. And the role of transfer functions in camera technology, and the benefits of Dolby Atmos for immersive audio experiences in cinemas. Discussing peak brightness in Dolby Vision cinema projection, the Dolby engineer noted that it's 108 nits at 12 bits in cinemas and 1000 nits for Smart TVs at home. The engineer explained the concept of Atmos mixing and emphasised the importance of stage (bed) speakers and the object (atmos elements). The object element allows sound to move freely within the room, enhancing the audience's experience. The entire setup comprises 128 channels of audio, with the first four channels dedicated to the bed and the remaining channels allocated to objects. The engineer clarified that the main elements of the film, such as heavy music and dynamic

sounds, are typically placed in the bed channel. When asked about the difference in approach taken for theatre and OTT, the engineer explained that the mixing room is set up for theatre, while an OTT room is used for different monitoring and loudness levels. He added that each OTT platform has its norms, and the mix is adjusted accordingly to meet those requirements. However, it is important to maintain a comfortable balance that works well for both theatre and OTT releases.

The engineer added that even blacks are always dynamically controlled by Dolby Vision, whether it is for a Dolby Cinema projector. He stressed the consistency of quality across different screen sizes and the advantages of Dolby Atmos for Dolby Cinema, emphasizing the studio-grade a udio quality and its transferability to exhibitions. Much like the Dolby Atmos adoption, which steadily picked up pace, we expect the Dolby Vision to become the next big thing for filmmakers and will see more pickup in some time. Mathur said that Annapurna Studios will be a marquee example for other production houses and may follow suit.

ANNAPURNA STUDIO: THE LEGACY STUDIO

Annapurna Studio in Hyderabad completed the 50-year milestone in

2025 and was established by veteran actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR) in 1975; it was named after ANR's wife, Annapurna. The studio, initially with non-airconditioned sound stages, has grown to 12 fully equipped air-conditioned stages, serving over 5,000 films and producing more than 60. It introduced new technologies, like Dolby Cinema, which required significant investments, especially during COVID-19. Annapurna Studio also expanded into virtual production technology during COVID-19 and was inspired by the success of series like The Mandalorian on Disney+. It now offers comprehensive post-production services, handling projects from editing to visual effects, aiming to be a one-stop shop for filmmakers. Annapurna Studios has handled mixing for popular movies like Pushpa and Pushpa 2. Gadgets 360 was among the select media that experienced the state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos mix rooms. The facility features a cutting-edge Dolby Vision projection system developed by Christie Digital Systems, a longstanding partner of Dolby.

DOLBY AND ANNAPURNA COLLABORATION: THE FIRST OF MANY

Nagarjuna Akkineni, actor and co-owner of Annapurna Studios, discussed the investments in developing a one-stop solution for filmmakers. He touched upon the importance of expanding the studio space and the potential for new stories to be told in darker settings with advanced technology like Dolby Vision. Nagarjuna stressed the benefits of technologies like Vision, which will help filmmakers bring new storytelling techniques alongside infrastructure improvements in theatres and the impact on production quality.

to integrating modern technology without expanding the physical boundaries. The existing structural hand-drawn blueprints were preserved for four decades, aiding engineers in digitally recreating and reinforcing the foundation before actual renovations began.

Despite strict height and boundary constraints, the renovation was successfully executed while

incorporating essential facilities such as HVAC, fire safety systems, electrical wiring, and optimised audience entry-exit pathways.

• Optimised Ventilation and Climate Control: Ensuring a pleasant atmosphere in every auditorium.

With its top-tier technology, innovative design, and audiencecentric approach, it continues to redefine the cinematic experience in Erode. Whether it's for blockbuster premieres, regional hits, or a gourmet movie meal, Sri Sakthi Cinemas remains a beloved entertainment hub for moviegoers of all generations.

GANAM CINEMAS: WINDS OF CHANGE IN THRISSUR

Cinema, as an art form and mode of storytelling, is undergoing a remarkable transformation-one that aligns with the evolving expectations of a discerning and increasingly diverse audience. No longer content with passive viewing, today's moviegoers-ranging from casual enthusiasts to devoted cinephiles-seek more than just a film. They desire an immersive experience, one that allows them to feel the weight of every emotion, absorb the subtlety of every sound, and lose themselves in breathtaking visual landscapes. In this era of heightened cinematic appreciation, the demand for venues that deliver films as they were truly meant to be experienced has never been greater. It is in this dynamic landscape that this Cinema emerges as a beacon of excellence. Located in the cultural capital of Kerala, this property is more than just a theatre-it is a sanctuary for those who appreciate cinema in its purest, most visceral form. With a commitment to technical brilliance and audience comfort, this property stands as the quintessential destination for an uncompromising, emotionally resonant, and wholly immersive cinematic journey…

Situated in Kuriachira, Valarkkavu, Thrissur, Ganam Cinemas stands as a paragon of cinematic excellence in Kerala's cultural heartland.

Established in 1995 as a Class C single-screen theatre by visionary entrepreneur C.D. Johny, Ganam was built with foresight and a deep commitment to providing quality entertainment for the long term. For 19 years, the theatre consistently showcased a blend of popular domestic films and select international titles, steadily earning

the trust and affection of its local audience.

In 2014, Ganam Cinemas temporarily closed for its first major renovation. It reopened in 2015 with transformative upgrades, most notably the installation of a 2K digital projection system and 7.1-channel surround sound, both of which significantly elevated the cinematic experience for audiences in Thrissur. The theatre's comeback was marked by the release of Shankar's I, which saw an unprecedented surge in footfall, setting a new benchmark for single screen popularity in the region.

By early 2025, Ganam underwent a second phase of renovation, re-affirming its commitment to continuous improvement. With state-of-the-art enhancements to both its auditorium and technological infrastructure, the cinema reemerged stronger than ever-this time debuting with the highly anticipated Malayalam film L2E - Empuraan. Once again, Ganam Cinemas demonstrated its ability to evolve, upgrade, and lead, proving its enduring place in the hearts of moviegoers.

A Technical Marvel Rooted in Elegance

Ganam Cinemas distinguishes itself through both technical

"During my time, releasing movies was a privilege reserved only for the major theatres located in the town centre of Thrissur. Amidst the stampeding crowds, many-including myself-were denied the opportunity to watch films in peace. I envisioned Ganam Cinemas as a place that would change this norm, bringing new releases to a more tranquil, rural setting. A place where people could enjoy cinema comfortably with their families and friends. A true break from life's noise-a satisfying and serene theatrical experience. That is, and always has been, my vision for Ganam Cinemas."

sophistication and thoughtful auditorium design. The theatre is now equipped with the flagship 4K RGB Laser projector from Christie, delivering unparalleled visual clarity. Complementing this is the Dolby Atmos sound system, powered by Pulz's specialised speakers and anchored by the Dolby CP950A audio processor-a setup that, according to Arun Sivan, Sound Engineer at Qube Cinema, produces one of the finest sound outputs currently available in the market.

To support this cutting-edge audiovisual system, Ganam has installed the Harkness HUGO SR Screen, which accommodates both 2D and

3D formats and is specifically optimised for RGB Laser projection. The 3D content is enhanced by the Redi Unipolar 3D projection system, ensuring a crisp and immersive visual experience from every angle.

Embodiment of Luxury and Comfort

The cinema's 326-seat auditorium embraces a calming blue-themed interior, skilfully balancing modern luxury with understated elegance. An inclined seating layout ensures optimal sightlines from every seat, while premium features such as two rows of plush sofa seating at the rear further elevate the viewing experience.

Accessibility and inclusivity have also been central to Ganam's evolution. During the first renovation in 2014, under the leadership of Sajeev C.J., Ganam introduced rare features for a single-screen theatre: wheelchair access, a feeding room for mothers, and a dedicated waiting lounge. These thoughtful additions were designed with the audience in mind, ensuring that cinema remains a welcoming space for all members of the community.

More Than Just Movies

Ganam Cinemas also enhances the moviegoing experience through its popular food and beverage outlet, CINE-BREAK, a leading concession brand in the region. Whether it's classic popcorn or a satisfying snack, CINE-BREAK delivers on every craving. Additionally, ample parking facilities and a vibrant children's play area make Ganam an ideal destination for families seeking a complete and enjoyable night out.

“Ganam Cinemas, Thrissur, now delivers an immersive audio experience with its latest Dolby Atmos upgrade, powered by Pulz’s Energy Series and Point Source Series solutions. At the core of this transformation is the Pulz Energy ESM6 screen speaker, equipped with quad low-frequency drivers and a coaxial mid-high section, making it one of the most robust and powerful cinema speakers available. The entire upgrade was seamlessly implemented by our partners at Qube Cinema, whose expertise ensured a swift transition with minimal downtime. Ganam Cinemas was back in action just in time to wow audiences with Empuraan—exactly as the filmmakers intended.”

Where Cinema Shines Brightest

In an era where cinematic boundaries are constantly being pushed, and audiences are increasingly drawn to authentic, emotionally resonant storytelling, the demand for elevated viewing experiences is higher than ever. Ganam Cinemas not only meets this demand-it exceeds it. With its superior acoustics, immersive

sound, refined interiors, world-class projection technology, and unwavering attention to detail, Ganam Cinemas has perfected the art of movie exhibition.

It is not merely a place to watch films-it is a place where stories shine the brightest, and cinema comes to life in its most compelling form.

GALALITE

FOLDX: VISUAL REINVENTION FOR SCREEN TECHNOLOGY

Galalite, a global leader in cinema screen technology, introduces FoldX-an industry-first innovation designed to transform the logistics of silver screen handling. This groundbreaking solution redefines the way cinema screens are packaged, transported, and installed, setting a new benchmark in efficiency and sustainability. Specifically engineered for 2D and 3D silver screens, including the advanced Prism 3D 2.4, FoldX introduces a flexible packaging solution that delivers unmatched logistical advantages without compromising the superior performance expected from premium cinema screens.

At the core of FoldX's innovation is a combination of High-Flex Modulus Coating and Polymeric CrossLinking Technology, two proprietary technologies that collectively enhance the screen's structural and optical resilience. These materials allow the screen to be flexibly folded and packed with minimal risk of damage, offering significant reductions in shipping volume and handling complexity. The material's

One of the key technical breakthroughs behind FoldX is its enhanced rheology optimisation. This process ensures that the reflective coating on the screen surface remains uniform, providing consistent light diffusion and superior image clarity across the entire viewing area. The result is an immersive cinematic experience that meets the highest standards of both 2D and 3D viewing environments.

From a logistical and operational standpoint, FoldX represents a

monumental shift for cinema owners and operators. The ability to fold and package silver screens into more compact units drastically reduces shipping dimensions and, by extension, lowers freight costs. Moreover, the product's lightweight handling characteristics streamline the installation process, leading to faster screen deployment and reduced manpower requirements. This efficiency makes FoldX an ideal solution for both new theatre setups and existing screen upgrades.

In addition to its performance and practicality, FoldX underscores Galalite's commitment to environmental responsibility. By reducing packaging size and shipping weight, the product contributes to lower carbon emissions throughout the logistics chain. Furthermore, the use of sustainable packaging materials ensures that FoldX not only improves operational efficiency but also aligns with global sustainability goals. For theatre owners seeking to modernise their operations without compromising ecological values, FoldX offers a compelling, planetconscious solution.

Whether deployed in boutique cinemas or multiplex chains, FoldX

delivers a balanced combination of technological excellence, logistical innovation, and environmental stewardship. It empowers stakeholders in the cinema industry to adopt a screen solution that is not only high-performing but also easy to manage and eco-efficient.

In summary, Galalite's FoldX redefines what is possible in the world of silver screen logistics. With its fusion of advanced materials science, optical precision, and sustainability-focused engineering, FoldX represents a leap forward in how cinema screens are conceived, delivered, and experienced.

PVR

INOX: BRINGS AN ALL-NEW GROUNDBREAKING INITIATIVE IN RAIPUR

Marking a significant milestone in PVR INOX's strategic expansion into Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities across India, the brand has launched its first-ever LUXE format under the FOCO (Franchise Owned, Company Operated) model in Chhattisgarh. TheatreWorld presents an exclusive interview with Pramod Arora, Chief Executive Officer at PVR INOX, to discuss this groundbreaking development…

Briefly describe a little about the FOCO model.

The business world is evolving rapidly, faster than many established companies. Zomato and Oyo's swift growth is driven by their belief in co-existence and collaboration - a concept that traditional businesses often struggle with. This collaborative approach, where mutual success creates expansive opportunities,

contrasts with the cinema industry, which, burdened by older leadership, is slow to adopt modern financial and operational strategies.

Around 2018-19, it was clear that the cinema industry's intellectual resources weren't being used for collaborative models, unlike the successful implementations in the hotel sector (e.g., Rosewood, Hilton). These hotels partner with developers and align with

governments for shared growth.

The cinema industry, however, relies heavily on private banks and equity, whose primary goal is financial return and eventual exit.

This investor mindset prioritises profit over brand loyalty, focusing on high-value exits.

In 2018, recognising this, a discussion with non-cinema colleagues suggested a collaborative model was possible but challenging

due to industry resistance. To succeed, a transparent operational framework (black box of SOPs) was crucial. Unlike contractual bank financing, this model depends on investor trust and adherence to principles. Therefore, shifting to this trust-based model required a clear and robust operational structure.

So, what are your thoughts on the concern about potential revenue loss, given the cinema industry's traditional focus on showcasing mainstream Bollywood and Hollywood content?

Indeed, while showcasing established content remains a component, it is not solely focused on re-releases, although those are part of the strategy. Rather, it is about securing the rights to new releases as well. Furthermore, it is becoming increasingly apparent that monetising content effectively on OTT platforms is proving to be an unsustainable model, a realisation that has solidified over the past three years.

What categories of individuals or entities would would best suited to opt this initiative?

A suitable candidate would be a committed real estate developer who is establishing a shopping centre with a certain prestige, aligning with brands of a similar calibre. For instance, a developer

who has already incorporated reputable brands and is targeting further premium international labels would be well-positioned. These developers recognise the critical role of Food and Beverage (F&B) in creating a vibrant and successful mall environment.

Currently, mall developments often consider a framework known as the ‘F's’, which represents key elements for consumer engagement. Initially, the three ‘F's’ - Fun (gaming), Food, and Films (movies) - were central. Subsequently, 'Fitness' was added as a fourth 'F', and now, Fashion is frequently included, creating the

'five F's'. This framework allows for a flexible and curated selection of these elements.

The modern mall environment necessitates a strong emphasis on these components. Food is indispensable for attracting and sustaining foot traffic. Similarly, the absence of entertainment options like ‘Fun’ significantly increases the risk of decreased visitor numbers. Regarding Films, it is my firm conviction that they are a vital anchor tenant. Therefore, this three F, four F, or five F selection process underscores the importance of these elements in a successful retail destination.

What specific and distinctive attributes will differentiate this proposed model from conventional multiplex cinema operations? Could you elaborate on the unique aspects that set it apart?

Leaving aside the immediate economics and focusing on the consumer experience, a key distinction lies in the fundamental purpose of the space. Unlike conventional cinemas solely focused on film exhibition, this model envisions a multifaceted social hub. Individuals are welcome to utilise the premises even without the intent of watching a movie. The area outside the auditorium is designed as a social networking and

co-working space. Patrons can bring their laptops, work throughout the day, and partake in refreshments without any expectation of purchasing a cinema ticket. Ticketing is strictly limited to entry into the individual auditoriums. This empowers the consumer, a departure from many existing cinema formats that implicitly require film attendance upon entry. This space fosters community, allowing people with shared interests, such as enjoying tea and snacks, to connect.

A second significant difference pertains to the advertising model, which is contingent on the development partner's preferences. Initially, the concept allows for an advertisement-free environment, catering to time-conscious viewers who prefer an uninterrupted cinematic experience. While traditional cinemas often allocate considerable time to advertisements, impacting the viewing duration, this model prioritises the pure form of the film. However, should the development partner later decide that incorporating advertisements is financially beneficial, the infrastructure and support for this are readily available. In such a scenario, a revenue-sharing

agreement of 50/50 for advertising revenue would be implemented. Conversely, for cinema ticket sales, the development partner retains the majority of the revenue, contributing only 10% of the gross to us. The partner maintains full control over the profit and loss statement for the cinema operations.

Are there any existing model strategies currently being implemented, or are there plans for further iterations or variations of this model?

Yes, the COCO (Company Owned, Company Operated) model currently includes an asset-light variation and will be further developed. While specific future

variations are internally prepared but not yet implemented, the FOCO (Franchise Owned, Company Operated) model is the primary focus for near-term enhancements. Two significant developments planned for the FOCO model are: first, offering technology solutions on a rental basis to franchisee who prefer a lower initial investment in this area; and second, integrating live entertainment capabilities within the cinema auditoriums.

Regarding live entertainment, while some existing franchise partners are receptive to this concept, we are developing versatile solutions for multi-purpose spaces. This includes an innovative, patented hydraulic stage system, currently in the engineering phase, which will allow for a seamless transition between film screenings and live performances. This feature aims to revitalise the cinema experience by accommodating events such as comedy shows and musical acts, potentially showcasing emerging local talent. This evolution is attracting interest from a younger demographic seeking to engage with a more dynamic cinema environment.

What specific factors or characteristics made Raipur the optimal location for your initial

venture? Elaborate on the key reasons behind this selection.

There were two primary reasons for selecting Raipur. Firstly, it served as an effective litmus test location. Contrary to a common perception that central Indian markets, particularly Chhattisgarh, underperform, data from a local mall, Magneto, indicated reasonable performance. This provided an initial positive data point.

Secondly, observations from another cinema in Bilaspur revealed a significant opportunity for improvement. Despite seemingly low average spending, a site visit indicated that the cinema's outdated infrastructure was likely deterring patrons. The developer, a known associate, was receptive to renovation. By proposing a moderate increase in his revenue share (2.2%), coupled with a commitment to invest significantly in the renovation (four crores), a mutually beneficial agreement was reached. This investment was projected to increase revenues by an estimated 1.3 times, based on the principle that consumers are generally averse to outdated and unappealing environments.

This approach underscores the importance of creating economically viable models that benefit all

stakeholders. Sustainable business practices necessitate a balanced and transparent approach, fostering mutual growth rather than exploitation. Attempting to maximise profits at the expense of partners is ultimately counterproductive, as external pressures can then negatively impact the entire ecosystem. The focus should be on balanced growth and transparency, moving away from a purely self-serving business mentality.

Considering the prevalence of luxury cinemas in metropolitan areas and their corresponding audience demographics, what was your strategy for pricing and marketing this concept specifically for a location like Raipur?

Pricing is intrinsically linked to market dynamics. As such, the pricing strategy for the deluxe offering in Raipur has not yet been finalised. Current introductory pricing by the development partner is still being determined. This is a collaborative decision-making process, as the development partner has a significant financial investment, and we also aim to optimise our fees. Ultimately, both parties need to align on a mutually agreeable price point.

Our fundamental approach, which is well-documented, is that price is dictated by the market's capacity to absorb it. Therefore, we anticipate a price discovery phase of at least one month. Likely, our initial pricing will not be perfectly calibrated. We may either under-price or overprice the offering. If under-priced, we will incrementally adjust upwards. Conversely, if overpriced, we will reduce it. This iterative process is expected due to this being a novel concept within the city.

What is the anticipated timeframe for this research and development phase?

The stabilisation period to determine the optimal market-driven price is anticipated to be approximately one month. Given the novelty of this model, a period of price discovery is necessary. While standard cinema ticket prices for regular screens will likely align with existing market rates, the pricing for the enhanced offerings will require careful calibration. This price adjustment process is common in new ventures, as seen in other locations where initial prices have been refined based on consumer response. The market ultimately dictates the sustainable price point.

Achieving profitability and overall stabilisation is projected to take approximately six months. After this period, a higher degree of confidence in the model's success is expected, as early adopters, particularly those attending evening shows and social gatherings, often act as influential advocates, driving further adoption. This organic influence is crucial for long-term success, which is typically not immediate.

In what ways could this new cinema model potentially influence Raipur's social dynamics? Furthermore, is there

an aspiration for it to achieve a similar status and symbolic significance as established multiplexes in metropolitan cities?

This establishment has the potential to become a significant social hub in Raipur. I anticipate it attracting women's social gatherings, providing an ideal setting for such events. The availability of high-quality food options, both within and near the cinema, coupled with the ability to arrange private screenings of films, even older titles based on specific requests, offers a unique and appealing proposition. This flexibility, where economic viability is maintained for both the patrons and the establishment, should resonate well.

I do believe it can achieve a notable social standing. The discerning local clientele values both unique experiences and quality. The ability to watch desired films in a premium setting and access superior food options can elevate social circles. Furthermore, the option to host gatherings with curated amenities,

potentially including licensed beverage service, presents a compelling alternative to conventional venues.

As the evening progresses, the city's prominent individuals and families are expected to frequent the establishment. Even for late-night showings, the experience caters to those who may be timeconstrained but still seek a comfortable and perhaps even restful environment. Positive experiences, even if not solely focused on the film itself, are likely to generate positive word-of-mouth. The luxurious amenities, such as comfortable seating and provided comforts, contribute to an overall experience that extends beyond mere film viewing, appealing to a diverse range of preferences. We aim to create a comprehensive offering that caters to a wide spectrum of potential patrons.

Given potential limitations on occupancy, how are you planning and strategising for seating arrangements and capacity management within the auditoriums, considering the screen sizes?

The auditorium is rented out entirely to the patron, who then has full discretion over its use, irrespective of the number of attendees. This approach is inspired by business models that prioritise exclusivity and personalised experiences. Consider the operational model of Hamleys during its independent era. Affluent clientele would reserve the entire store for extended periods, focusing on the experience rather than the cost. Similarly, this cinema model emphasises the personalised nature of the space.

It is not about maximising occupancy per screening but rather about offering a bespoke environment.

The intention is to create a space where patrons feel a sense of ownership and exclusivity, akin to having their private cinema. This caters to individuals who value personalised service and wish to provide a unique experience for their guests. The focus shifts from transactional ticket sales to offering a premium, tailored environment where convenience and exclusivity are paramount.

As someone at the forefront of your cinema's growth and strategic direction, particularly concerning expansion into non-metropolitan areas, what specific aspects of this development are most energising and promising to you?

The most exhilarating aspect of this cinema expansion, particularly in non-metropolitan cities, is the potential for multifaceted evolution. Firstly, the evolution of human resources within the industry is compelling. The current dominance of seasoned professionals presents a significant opportunity for a generational shift, empowering younger talent into leadership roles. This infusion of fresh perspectives is crucial for the industry's

revitalisation. Secondly, the evolution of the cinema experience itself is exciting. This involves integrating elements from the burgeoning gaming industry and revolutionising the Food and Beverage (F&B) offerings. Moving beyond limited, unseen menus to showcasing a diverse and appealing culinary experience is key.

Thirdly, the integration of live entertainment within cinema spaces represents a significant evolution. This creates opportunities for hyper-local artistic expression and diversifies the cinema's appeal beyond film screenings. Fourthly, the rapid evolution of technology offers transformative possibilities. Imagine interactive cinematic experiences where viewers can virtually engage with the on-screen content. This technological integration holds immense potential to redefine the moviegoing experience. These four pillars of evolution - human resources, experience, live events, and technology - are what make this expansion so dynamic. It's not merely about business growth but about fundamentally reshaping the cinema landscape to be more inclusive and engaging for a wider

audience, including those who do not typically frequent cinemas. The vision is to create a destination akin to exclusive membership clubs, offering a personalised and high-quality experience that fosters a sense of belonging and exclusivity.

While the FOCO (Franchise Owned, Company Operated) model is often perceived as a lower-risk venture for franchisees due to its inherent benefits, what unforeseen or less obvious challenges have you encountered or do you anticipate within this model?

A significant challenge encountered during the development of the FOCO model was the extensive time required - approximately three and a half years - to establish comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), particularly around transparent operational metrics. Defining parameters such as data collection, net and gross revenue, ticket pricing, and budgetary controls across different locations presented a complex undertaking. Achieving alignment with development partners on aspects like initial ticket pricing, where differing perspectives exist,

also introduces complexities. The iterative process of refining these parameters over time has been time-consuming.

Furthermore, programming control poses another key challenge. Traditionally, programming decisions reside centrally. The objective is to empower the franchise owner to have greater autonomy in programming, potentially through a dedicated mobile application. However, the full realisation of such an ‘FOCO app’ is still some time away.

Democratising the cinema ecosystem, where franchise owners have a more direct say in operational aspects like programming, is a crucial evolution. While initial SOPs have been established, perfecting this model and addressing intricacies like devolving programming control equitably will require further development over the next three years. The challenge lies in creating systems, such as the envisioned app, that facilitate this democratisation and empower owners in decision-making relevant to their specific market.

While these challenges exist, they are inherent to the process of innovation and refinement.

Setting aside the expected premium amenities such as reclining seating, gourmet

refreshments, and overall luxurious ambience, what is one less obvious yet compelling feature of this cinema that you believe will particularly delight and surprise the audience?

Beyond the expected premium features, the most under-rated and surprising element will be the inclusion of a prominent café space integrated within the cinema complex. This café is designed to challenge the conventional perception that entry into a cinema necessitates a ticket purchase. We anticipate that within a couple of months, this notion will be dispelled, establishing the cinema as a desirable social destination in its own right, particularly during afternoons. This concept is inspired by the success of experiential food destinations. For instance, the popularity of specific eateries, even those with significant wait times, demonstrates the power of creating a compelling experience that

transcends mere consumption. We aim to replicate this by offering a welcoming café environment within the cinema, encouraging people to visit and socialise regardless of their intention to watch a film.

Furthermore, we are exploring the incorporation of additional lifestyle amenities within our cinema spaces. For example, select future locations are slated to include nail bars, recognising the high margins and convenience this service offers to patrons. This diversification aims to cater to a broader range of needs and preferences. Looking ahead, one particularly innovative feature being developed for a new Bangalore location is a dine-in cinema experience unlike any other. This will involve a meticulously designed, high-end restaurant setting within the auditorium itself, allowing patrons to enjoy a full dining experience while watching a new release on an LED screen. The use of LED technology, while a significant investment, will enhance the viewing experience by allowing patrons to see their food. This level of detailed planning and commitment to an exceptional customer experience is what we believe will truly differentiate our cinemas. Our strategic focus is on creating a love mark rather than just a trademark, fostering a deep connection with our audience by consistently exceeding their expectations.
