inister for the Natural Environment and Fisheries who is also Member for Newbury, Richard Benyon has been asked to introduce new regulations on water extraction. The request came during his visit to see the appalling state of the Kennet River at Marlborough. Mr Benyon on Friday met chairman of Action for the River Kennet Geoffrey Findlay and director of ARK Charlotte Hitchmough. Fish are reported to be dying and the natural environment is facing its greatest challenge since the drought of 1976. Downstream at Chilton Foliat and Hungerford there is extreme concern at river levels. At Chilton Foliat the permanent river depth gauge is completely out of the water.
