And throughout all the festivities our traditional Summer Festival Art Exhibition will be at the Hungerford Hub. We’re kicking off this amazing programme with a Festival Launch Party at John O’Gaunt School. Popular new Constable of the Town and Manor and local actor Nicholas Lumley will open the event in his inimitable style, and with a BBQ and drinks organised by the PSA, it will be a fabulous evening with buskers, two bands – Pope and Disorganised, comprising current and former JOG pupils – plus student artwork displays and photographs by Hungerford Camera Club and an exciting project about Hungerford by pupils. And we finish the Festival with the Carnival Parade followed by Hungerford Town Band with their concert “Movie Magic�!

The Festival runs from 28th June until 14th July, with something for everyone – so put the dates in your diary, browse the website or pick up a copy of the programme in venues throughout Hungerford.

hursday May 23rd should have seen the Marlborough Players performing ”Entertaining Angels” at the Town Hall. Emphasis on “should”. But thanks to the previously-unforeseen need to participate in the Europe-wide elections, the Town Hall was commandeered for the day and evening so people could cast their Euro-votes. The Marlborough Players have – future elections permitting – rescheduled their performance for the evenings of June 20-22nd. Steam and vintage rally

T

he Wiltshire Agricultural Preservation Group is, as the name suggests, all about generating interest in agricultural machinery dating from before the mid-1990s, as well as preserving and if need be, restoring that equipment back to its original condition. It’s not the only group of its kind, and works with other similar groups with the same aim. So far over the past fourteen years the Group has donated over £68,000 to charities including the Wiltshire Bobby Van Appeal, Help For Heroes and the Wiltshire Air Ambulance Trust.

Courtesy of Mr Robert and Lady Julia Hiscox and family, the Group is once again hosting its two-day Steam and Vintage Rally featuring steam traction engines, stationary engines, a craft marquee, vintage organs, dog agility competitions, ferret racing, autojumble and much more over June 8th and 9th at Rainscombe Park, Oare (between Marlborough and Pewsey on the A345). The Show runs from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm both days.

Odd uses for vodka

ummaging around way in the back of a seldom-used cupboard, we discovered an old bottle of vodka we’re positive we never put there.

And it seemed whoever originally opened it didn’t like it much, because there was only a little bit missing.

But they could have done all sorts of other things with it – we already knew for a fact that vodka works nicely as an aftershave (don’t ask how we found that out, but then again what’s the key ingredient in most aftershaves? That’s right – alcohol!).

So in the interest of science we had a little taste just to make sure it hadn’t gone off, and then went online to see what else whoever bought that vodka could have done with it, instead of hiding it away.

They could, for example, have taken the sting out of toothache with a vodka-soaked cotton ball placed around the afflicted tooth. Or mixed it with cinnamon to make a less-minty mouthwash.

Elsewhere on the interweb we discovered that it also makes for an effective deodorant for feet and armpits, either dabbed on or squirted from a spray bottle.

Even though we knew it’s an effective aftershave, what we didn’t know was that cleaning a razor blade thoroughly and then leaving it soaking in vodka would keep it sharp and disinfected.

We’re also told that adding a little vodka to conditioner lowers its pH value, and so keeps your hair more shiny and less frizzy.

And dousing a jellyfish sting with vodka is a more hygienic alternative to the other well-known method of easing that particular pain – but we’ll leave that one for another day.

ungerford WI recently hosted a very “Fishy Evening” at their AGM in the Croft Hall. The main event was a talk by Kevin Little, who entertained us all with tales of his experiences in the fish trade, as he owns and runs the fish shop in Reading’s “Smelly Alley”. He also gave us the origins of such sayings as “Holy Mackerel” and “Red Herring”. The hall was decorated with fishy bunting, table decorations had a tropical island/fishy theme and, of course, the delicious refreshments included salmon sandwiches! tep out on the very first North Wessex Downs Walking Festival, June 8th-23rd!

Perhaps you’re a seasoned rambler – striding out in your worn-out leather boots every weekend come rain or shine. Or, on the other hand, you might want to explore the countryside a bit and get some fresh air but don’t know which way is up on a map. Either way, there’s a walk for you during the very first North Wessex Downs Walking Festival this June.

The North Wessex Downs is one of the largest tracts of chalk downland in southern England and reaches into four counties – Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Hampshire. This is top-class walking country, with big skies and wooded valleys – a fascinating and glorious landscape, where the downs are dotted with barrows and other prehistoric features.

products for dogs and occasionally flea collars for cats.

Permethrin is not toxic for dogs. Dogs and cats are totally separate species and their biology is completely different. Most permethrin poisonings occur when an owner accidentally uses a dog spot-on product on their cat – most of the time in error but occasionally when an owner thinks only a small amount “can’t hurt”.

Unfortunately even a tiny dose can cause significant illness.

Owners of both dogs and cats must be careful not to use permethrin products on their dogs. Because the chemical stays in the dog’s skin and fur for some time, if the cat was to groom or rub against the dog this would transfer some of the permethrin to the cat, therefore causing a toxicity.

What are the signs of permethrin poisoning?

The cat’s nervous system is affected by permethrin, causing tremors, shaking and twitching. The cat will be oversensitive to sound and touch. It may appear wobbly or drunk looking. Severe poisoning will lead to seizures, blindness and breathing difficulties.

If your cat shows any of these symptoms, or if you’re aware you’ve accidentally treated your cat with permethrin you must call your vet immediately for treatment.

Always read the active ingredients in any product before you administer to your pet. Many of the non–prescription flea treatments that are available in pet shops may contain permethrin.
