Hungerford’s new mayor is (this is where TV producers insist on that dreadful pause before announcing the winner of the cookery/ survival/talent show) Councillor Helen Simpson.

Selecting this year’s Deputy Mayor at the Annual Meeting of the Full Council this past Tuesday evening, though, wasn’t that straightforward.

Ballot sheets had to be distributed around the tables around the Corn Exchange, filled in, passed up to the head table and counted in silence. It was then announced that this year’s Deputy Mayor was (another of those pauses)... Councillor Keith Knight. Again.

And if last year is anything to go by, this means there will be more than 160 civic engagements at local, county and national level for the pair to look forward to until the next Annual Meeting of the Full Council.

In other meeting news, a warm welcome was given to Daniel Lewis, Hungerford’s newest councillor. He’s been a resident for six years, and once he’s got his feet properly under the Council table he’ll be Continued on page 2

But before it’s back to Mayoral Business once more for Cllr Simpson, she has a couple more engagements which might not be so official, but equally important: a birthday, followed by a certain garden party at a certain Palace in London.

Community Award prizewinners

L

ast November the Town and Manor asked Hungerford residents to come up with an idea to bring people together and make the town an even better place to live.

And there were some splendid ideas, too – from building a bandstand on the Croft, to promoting the town as an antiques centre, to organising local cycle routes and even to encouraging beekeeping locations around the area.

Two prizes were to be awarded for the best ideas: for those entrants under 18, the junior prize was £250 which was won by the team of Ava Norman, Sophie Roques and Daisy Pearce, who suggested a “Try Something New Festival”. This would showcase local sports and activities, allowing people to have a try at something they could take up as a new hobby or sport.

Going like hot cakes at the Speakability fundraiser!

I

f you’d noticed a flurry of activity on Hungerford’s Town Hall steps the morning after Hocktide but didn’t go and investigate, you definitely missed out there.

It was, as we discovered while picking out a particularly delicious gluten-free Madeira cake, a Cake Sale to raise funds for Newbury Speakability.

It’s a group run for and by people with Aphasia, a condition brought on by a head injury, or a neurological syndrome or – in the case of the person behind that morning’s Sale, Hungerford’s Jennie Rushford – the stroke she suffered last July.

This left her with what the National Aphasia Association describes as “an impairment of language affecting the production or comprehension of speech�.

Newbury Speakability gives people with Aphasia the skills they need to rebuild their communication confidence.

One way of doing this is to experience things together and then practise describing them to each other in a supportive environment, using words, drawing, pictures and gestures.

Doing the great Great Bedwyn tango

W

hen you think of the tango, you might well think of certain provocative and/or suggestive moves and overtones, South American heat and a rose held firmly between the teeth.

And it’s highly unlikely you’ll think of Finland, where Tangomarkkinat – the annual Finnish tango festival – draws over 100,000 tango lovers to the central town of Seinäjoki (where you’ll also find the Tango Museum) and unless you’re one of the few in the know, it’s even less likely that when you think of the tango you think of… Great Bedwyn.

And that would be a mistake, because every Saturday morning Jive Temptation teaches all-comers the Argentine tango in the Village Hall there. They offer one-hour lessons, and give students another half-hour to practice their newly-learnt

moves.

If you don’t have a dance partner, that’s not a problem – and there’s no need to book either, although it’s always worth checking www. jivetemptation.co.uk or giving them a quick bell on 07789 667312 to make sure their upcoming Saturday session hasn’t had to be cancelled for whatever reason.

The Argentine tango, by the way, is usually more upbeat than the Finnish tango, performed to music which is pretty well always in a minor key and therefore somewhat melancholy, thereby reflecting the themes of the country’s often less-than-cheerful folk poetry.

But as for the Great Bedwyn Tango? Well, you’ll just have to turn up at the village hall any Saturday morning at 10:00 am… and find out for yourself!

A spot of sport

I

f – like many people – you feel it would require major surgery to disconnect your youngsters’ fingers and thumbs from their electronic devices, you might be interested to know about two programmes starting up in the Hungerford area.

In no particular order, they’re “Turn Up and Play Football” and “Kwik Cricket”.

Kwik Cricket is for those in Years 3-6 and takes place on Saturdays between 9:15 and 10:15 am at Hungerford Cricket Club. It aims to teach children the rules of cricket, develop the core skills they need to get good at it and above all, have some fun.

Law of Attraction workshop

e can’t remember what started all the “Law of Attraction” emails dropping into our inbox, but over the past couple of years we’ve attracted a great deal of them. So it’s with a certain amount of interest that we note that things have now moved offline and into the real world, with a very real Law of Attraction (and vision board) workshop happening in Marlborough on Saturday May 25th.

But what is this Law, anyway?

Essentially it’s all about how what you focus on in your thoughts becomes reality: negative thoughts produce negative results, positive thoughts produce positive results. And we can’t argue with that.

Run by multiple business owner Helen Pinkett, the workshop will teach you how the Law works and then show you how to use the Law to make your desires a reality.

This involves creating a vision board to use as a constant reminder of what you want, and Helen will show you the best way to create yours.

And yes, perhaps it does sound a bit woo-woo, but we’ve got friends who swear their vision boards have worked… and from several personal experiences we know that it’s definitely possible to visualise something and then have it drop into our lap.

It starts at 6:00 pm with a bang – OK, then, a party. In fact it’s the community Party by the Pitch at Hungerford Town Football Club, with live music, local bands, a licensed bar and other refreshments on offer. If you want to bring a picnic along, feel free.

So now you’ve got a few weeks to plan and build a float for that Sunday’s Carnival parade. It’s a great reason to get together and build something eyecatching, whether it’s motorised or footpowered, and for businesses it’s an excellent way to get your company name in front of the community.

And, of course, there’s always the option of collecting money for your organisation or chosen charity as your float winds its way from John O’Gaunt School, through Hungerford and down to The Bear Hotel.

A4: road to nowhere

T

his won’t be news to those who drive westwards along the A4 from Marlborough on a regular basis (or, of course, eastwards towards town) but there’s always the chance that you might not yet know that bit of that road between the High Street and Golding Avenue is currently closed at night for some desperately-needed resurfacing work.

On the one hand, it’s more than just a minor inconvenience if you have to take that road to or from Marlborough between 7:00 pm and 6:00 am any night this month, or possibly even next month as well, according to the letter from Atkins the contractors. “Timings”, they say “may over run due to uncontrollable circumstances such as plant breakdowns.”

But on the other hand, once Atkins have resurfaced that stretch of road properly, you’ll be able to drive along it without having to keep your fingers crossed that your tyres, wheels and axles will survive the potholes that made it such a vehicular assault course before now.

Wiltshire Council recommends an alternate route into Marlborough from the west which involves a detour towards Devizes and Pewsey, and then into town along the A345.

Battlefield Marlborough!

F

ive years ago the English Civil War Society reminded us – very realistically – of what happens when a nation finds itself divided.

The Society will be doing it again this summer, re-enacting events from the Civil War over the last weekend of July.

Previously they showed spectators on Marlborough Common what went on back in 1642, when family members were pitted against family members, all armed with pikes, muskets, cannons and swords.

This time, the Common will once again be a battlefield, while over in Priory Gardens you’ll be able to see exactly what life was like way back in the 1600s, and there will be other glimpses into the seventeenth century throughout the town.

It’s not only going to be an educational weekend for local people: if the 2014 event is anything to go by, thousands of visitors will be descending on Marlborough for the occasion which, it goes without saying, is going to be great for businesses in the area.

Sarah and Simon Carreck, who handle the design, writing and advertising sales, and Simon Hobden who handles advertising sales inserts, and printing. All three have all had long experience in the publishing, printing and design sectors and all have a long association with the area. The Fortnightly Adviser circulates to circa 14,000 readers in the towns of Hungerford and Marlborough each fortnight and also to all the surrounding villages on a rotational basis. We are an independent publication, keen to promote businesses in the community. We have free space to publicise local events if there is a charitable or good cause involved – but that free space is limited. We publish fortnightly. The magazine has been trading for 30 years with some advertisers being present all of that time. It is hand distributed to residences and businesses throughout the area by independent deliverers.

According to the Animal Welfare Act 2006, pet owners have a legal duty of care to provide the following 5 freedoms: Freedom from hunger or thirst may seem an obvious one, but that includes feeding an appropriate diet that meets their nutritional needs as well as providing fresh clean water.

Freedom from discomfort is related to providing appropriate shelter and warmth. This is particularly appropriate for outdoor pets like rabbits and guinea pigs.

Freedom from pain, injury or disease means providing our pets with Veterinary care at the right time. This one seems obvious but it doesn’t just mean taking them to the vet when they are ill. It also requires owners to prevent disease by using parasite treatments and vaccinations.

Freedom to express normal behaviour requires pet owners to assess whether their pet is happy. Some animals thrive when they have a companion, guinea pigs for example, whereas some pets would much rather be solitary, like cats. Pet owners must think of their pet’s wellbeing before getting them a “best friend” they do not want!

Freedom from fear and distress means not putting our pets in stressful situations unnecessarily. New puppy owners can provide this freedom by socialising their young dog and getting them accustomed to situations that could be scary. A well-socialised dog will have less fear and stress throughout their life.

These freedoms apply to every single animal, from a tiny Russian hamster to a shire horse.

Providing these should be a pet owner’s priority.

Crusaders stay in the League!

April 27th at Bulpit Lane Hungerford Town: 1 East Thurrock United: 1 ungerford made hard work of it but a 94th minute stunner from Noah Chesmain retained their National League South status. Only one point was needed before kick-off, and that’s what was delivered despite an average display from the hosts against a side already relegated. Thurrock nearly fell behind three minutes in when a short corner from Cameron Hargreaves caught them napping. Marcus Johnson-Schuster collected the pass and strode into the box, forcing Jack Giddens into an early save. Giddens spilled the ball but to his relief collected it on the goal line. Despite the promising start the visitors started to gain a foothold in proceedings, and a shot from Ricky Hayles made Michael Luyambula dive low to his right for his first save of the afternoon. The atmosphere had begun to dry up as news of Truro City scoring reached Berkshire. Then Bulpit Lane turned to silence as Thurrock scored the opening goal. Shaun Batt fired a dipping strike from around 20 yards, underneath Luyambula and the crossbar. Charlie Ten-Grotenhuis tried to force the issue putting a strong foot in to win the ball back high up the pitch, releasing fellow midfielder Alfy Whittingham. In space Whittingham came close but couldn’t test Giddens. Instead the hosts should’ve been two behind on the stroke of half time. A corner to the back stick was headed back across goal to Batt.

Seemingly certain to score Luyambula denied him with an excellent reflex save.

The Crusaders were instantly livelier after the break and Danilo Orsi-Dadomo showed neat footwork to gain a sight of goal, however his tame shot didn’t trouble the goalkeeper. The visitors had no more substitutes left when a reshuffle was required, courtesy of defender Jon Nzengo being shown a straight red card. Constant pressure was now being provided on the Rocks backline with Lynch nearly breaking their resistance twice. He couldn’t take the two excellent chances presented to him, placing one shot wide and dragging another one past the post. A late equaliser did come though, when Chesmain brought the ball forward and decided to have a go from long range. The finish was exquisite and flew past the despairing dive of Giddens to secure Hungerford’s safety.
