ell, it’s been a fabulous few days so far, and we’re now just around the midpoint of this year’s Summer Festival.

So far we’ve had wildlife walks at the beginning and the end of the day – some with bats, and some without… and still on a nature theme we’ve learnt just how amazing honeybees (and dragons) can be, and how much magic and laughter can happen when we fall under the spell of a psychic duck.

With live music from new and established acts, theatre performances, workshops, a military parade, an introduction to Qi Gong and even the chance to have a toot on a brass band instrument, well, if variety is the spice of life then things have been pretty spicy recently down Hungerford way!

But there’s still so much of the Summer Festival to look forward to: musings on motherhood… a wine and cheese tasting… musical enjoyment with the Kennet Accordion Orchestra – and that’s just this Friday evening.

Summer holiday music

I

t might be a little early to begin thinking about summer holiday activities for the youngsters, but then again when it comes to activities you need to book for, you can never start too soon.

Case in point: the Berkshire Maestros’ Hungerford Summer Course 2019. It’s three music-making days for young woodwind, brass and percussion musicians (beginners to Grade 3 standard) when they’ll discover what it’s like to play in a wind band. They’ll also improve their playing skills, learn exciting repertoire and – of course – meet other like-minded musicians and make new friends.

Each of those three days has a different theme: Wednesday July 31st explores music from different countries around the world Thursday August 1st is all about musicals and show tunes Friday August 2nd is much more rock and pop oriented.

Parents and carers are more than welcome to a short concert at the end of each day.

All three days are at John O’Gaunt School’s Bear Grylls Inspiration Centre, and start with registration at 8:45 am.

Extravaganza 2019

E

ven though we’re in the middle of the Summer Festival, it doesn’t mean nobody’s thinking about this year’s Hungerford Extravaganza on December 13th.

The Funfair and the Reading Scottish Pipe Band are already booked, while Santa Claus still has to decide what mode of transport he’ll be using when he makes his appearance.

Hungerford’s Chamber of Commerce are looking into various new ideas for this year’s event, and would like to have more stands for charities and other local organisations.

The Secret Spitfires

C

rofton Beam Engines has partnered with Salisbury film producer Ethem Cetintas to show his feature length Director’s Cut version of “The Secret Spitfires”.

Having destroyed the Spitfire factories in Southampton in 1940, the Germans thought that was the end of the threat posed by those fabulous fighter planes.

But what they didn’t know was that you don’t actually need a whole factory to build a Spitfire – you just need some space. Like sheds, garages or back gardens. Or, if you need a bit more space, a bus depot or even a hotel.

And such spaces were where unskilled boys, girls, women and elderly men – with the help of a handful of engineers – built many more Spitfires, piece by piece, hidden safely away from

enemy eyes.

It’s an amazing and moving true story, and after the film ninetyyear-old Norman Parker, one of that handful of engineers – and the historical adviser to the film – will be answering audience questions.

That’s “The Secret Spitfires”, in the Assembly Room in Marlborough Town Hall, Friday July 19th, 7:00 for 7:30 pm.

Hungerford in Bloom

ungerford Town Council would like to thank everyone who’s entered this year’s Hungerford in Bloom, and also to let you know that judging is going to take place this Saturday, July 6th.

If you’re not at home on the day, please make sure judges can get to where they need to be to do their judging.

It’s not possible to say where the judges will be at any given time that day, but they’ll be looking at commercial entries first, and should have finished

judging those in the morning.

Continuing that morning, the judges will be casting their expert eye over residential and school entries, and they’ll be looking at gardens to the east of the High Street, as in Fairview Road, Bulpit Lane, Coldharbour Road and so on.

They’ll then move on to gardens on the other side of the High Street, like Church Street and Uplands and continue checking out entries during the afternoon.

Steampunk?

W

ell... it’s about steam, obviously. But punk? No, not in the least. Steampunk has absolutely nothing to do with safety pins going where safety pins really shouldn’t go, or sugared-up brightly-coloured parrot crest hairstyles. It’s safe for both grandparents and grandchildren, and all about a quieter era when the Sex Pistols were just a gleam in their ancestors’ eyes.

Imagine, if you will, a fictitiousish time when electricity took second or even third place to the power of steam, when ladies and gentlemen habitually dressed in their finest attire (plus brass goggles to keep the steam out of their eyes) and partook of such activities as Tea Duelling (involves biscuits) and Teapot Racing, which does what it says on the (biscuit) tin.

Now imagine the people of that time brought forward a century or two to a place where steam still reigns supreme, and you’ve got Crofton Beam Engines’ Splendid Summer Steampunk Steaming, on July 27th and 28th.

There, you too can participate in racing teapots, duelling with biscuits or – for the more adventurous – with customised Steampunk NERF guns, and all against the backdrop of Crofton’s mighty 200-year-old engines, still steaming after all these years.

If you don’t feel like dressing up in your Sunday best and you don’t have a pair of brass goggles to hand, you’ll still be made considerably more than welcome by local steampunk group Steamhenge, who will be entertaining visitors throughout the weekend. And with all that gardening in mind, what should we do, we wondered, with our unused bathtime Epsom salts?

The interweb says they’re very useful for transplanting seedlings and plants. Just a tablespoon full spooned into the new hole and covered with a thin layer of soil before we pop in our plant will help prevent transplant shock.

We also discovered that honey – already known for its antiseptic and anti-fungal properties – contains the kind of enzymes that actively promote root growth in plants.

Experts tell us that if we’re propagating using a potting method, we should be scraping the cut ends of our plants and dipping them in honey before they go into the soil.

Otherwise if we’re propagating with water, we should be dipping our cuttings into honey before adding them to water with a little more honey added to it.

But if you’re out of honey and Epsom salts, there’s always cinnamon which also has anti-fungal properties and works well, they say, as a rooting agent.

nspired by the fiftieth anniversary of the first moon landing, Space Chase – West Berkshire Libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge – lifted off on July 1st.

Space Chase invites young readers between the ages of four and eleven to sign up and read any six library books before the end of September.

As they read their books, they’ll also be collecting special stickers and solving the mystery of mischievous aliens who’ve been nicking books from the local lunar library.

Highest ever turnout

ore Hungerford voters than ever before voted in the recent public election of Trustees for the Town & Manor charity.

Ten of the thirteen candidates hoping for election (or re-election) will be sworn in by the Steward of the Hocktide Court at the charity’s Board Meeting on July 15th.

Nicholas Lumley, the new Town & Manor Constable said “I was really pleased to see such an increase in turnout, as people are recognising the important work we do in the town. This is their chance to get involved in this charity and have their say, and I am looking forward to welcoming the new Trustees to the board.”

Grass seeds!

ungerford Rotary Club marked the start of their Rotary year with a BBQ and the induction of their new President, Mike Gilbert and President Elect Nick Furr.

Mike Gilbert, the new President has lived in the Newbury area for the last 33 years. He spent most of his working life at the Harwell Laboratory and at local firm Micro Focus.

In retirement, Mike has devoted his time to teaching with the WEA, playing guitar and is very active with the Hungerford Twinning Association.

Record number of entries for this year’s Harey 8

H

ungerford Running Club’s recent annual Harey 8 saw a record 1470 entrants of all ages being started off from the Rugby Club’s Triangle Field by Mayor Helen Simpson. They then headed out towards Hungerford Common where they followed the course towards Templeton, ran along a circular route of footpaths and returned to the Triangle Field via the Common.

That was just a whisker less than eight kilometres (or 4.95 miles in old money) and many of those runners completed the course in under an hour.

This year, the Hares chose the Macular Society as its charity partner to raise awareness of macular disease, the UK’s biggest cause of sight loss.

Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society said: “We were really pleased to be chosen as this year’s Harey 8 charity partner. Macular Disease is a devastating condition. The money raised from this event will go towards vital research which can help find a cure.”

And Hungerford Hares Club Chairman Mandy Waldon said: “We are delighted that the race attracted more participants this year and pleased that it is getting more popular every year.

There is a race for everyone on the day whatever their age or running experience and this is what makes the whole event

very special.

“We’re pleased to have paired up this year with the Macular Society and we would like to thank everyone involved in staging this year’s event including our local sponsors, fantastic marshals and volunteers.

“We were also very lucky that Town Mayor Helen Simpson was there to start the race and present the category prizes.

She also individually congratulated the runners when they finished.”

Open Days at Marlborough Tennis Club

arlborough Tennis Club would like to thank everybody who supported their recent Open Day to celebrate the opening of their new facility, next to the Marlborough Golf Club.

Despite the weather, visitors enjoyed a spectacular spread of cakes, a wonderful barbecue and even some fabulous tennis from two former Davis Cup (and Wimbledon) players, Luke Milligan and James Auckland, together with Wiltshire Under-16 champ Amelia Bissett and tennis coach Paul Revelle.

The next Open Day starts at 10:00 am on Saturday July 20th when, with luck, the weather will be somewhat better than last time. Hungerford’s Olympic hope

S

etting and breaking records comes naturally to Hungerford’s young javelin star Ben East. As a Team Kennet under-15 athlete, he won five javelin championships and set seven local and national records.

He’s already made history by breaking his own UK record for the fifth time and gained international renown as the first under-15 to throw the javelin over 70 metres.

Presently competing as an under-17, Ben’s other achievements have included: champion and record holder for both English Schools and the United Kingdom; champion of the South of England, the South of England AA Inter Counties and Berkshire County; record holder for the Wessex and the Oxfordshire Young Athletes Leagues and, of course, Team Kennet.

And so it’s no surprise that Ben’s aiming to join our Olympic team – or that they’d welcome him with open arms.

But there’s one snag: he’s got this far thanks to training from his inspired coach Luke Angell, who’s been volunteering his time… and thanks to financial support from his parents.

But as Ben competes in the UK and around the world, he’s going to need more of that kind of support in the form of donations and/or sponsorship on his website www. beneastjavelin.co.uk and elsewhere. The Town Council have already pitched in, and here he is, being presented with a cheque from the Chamber of Commerce.

Marlborough FC news

W

ith a club ethos of Football For All, Marlborough Youth FC offers a wide range of football opportunities for players of all ages and abilities, while following and promoting the FA Chartered Standard code of conduct.

Thanks to the Club’s growth, Chairman Stuart Slater is now looking for more volunteers to help run their Mixed Teams for both boys and girls, Angels Teams for girls only and Walking Football for those who’d still like to play but who’d prefer not to run.

The Club has 360 player members, with 23 teams being fielded regularly with the help of close to sixty regular volunteers, but there’s always room for more.

Volunteers would be very welcome on the pitch in the shape of coaches, assistants and team managers. Off the pitch, though, MYFC is on the lookout for a sponsor manager, fund raiser, website manager and someone to lend a hand when it comes to IT matters.

Investing in all safeguarding, first aid and FA level 1/2 qualifications will – as always – be handled by the Club.

“All help is welcome” says Stuart. “Whether an hour a month, an hour a week or an hour a day, all time is gratefully received.

We are always looking to the future. Over time we will inevitably need Chair, Treasurer and Club Secretary replacements, therefore the time is right to seek a vice chair, vice treasurer and vice secretary.”

t may be summer (at long last) but that doesn’t mean Hungerford Rugby Football Club is taking much in the way of time off to enjoy the warm weather.

Pre-season training has already started for the Seniors every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:00 pm, while the Colts train at the same time on Thursday evenings. All new players are very welcome.

HUNGERFORD TENNIS CLUB FAMILIES’ WEEKEND 13th/14th JULY The Hungerford Tennis Club will be hosting their Annual Open Weekend over the 13th/14th July at the Croft.

Activities commence at 10.00am and will include: Fun competitions for all ages and abilities Free professional coachings on the Sunday Barbeque Wimbledon Finals shown on large screen TV This, as always, will be a lively and enjoyable event.
