ow much did local Conservative candidates really have to do with saving Hungerford’s library – apart, of course, from being the reason it needed to be saved in the first place?

Chair of Friends of Hungerford Library – during their campaign to fight West Berkshire Council’s library cuts – and past mayor Peter Harries gives us the answer: “This morning I received through my letterbox the ‘Vote for me’ slip from the local Conservative candidates for the WBC council elections. I was shocked to read that the prospective Conservative members for Hungerford and Kintbury felt it correct to infer that THEY were responsible for saving Hungerford’s library, which of course we know is not true. They even took a photograph of themselves outside the library building!

“Let’s be clear: It was the people of Hungerford who formed an action group – ‘Friends of Hungerford Library’ – to save our library when West Berks Council announced widespread closures across the county.

It was the Friends, together with HTC, who took this to WBC and developed with them a workable plan to keep the library open. As a result, HTC now rent the building for a peppercorn rent, releasing funds for WBC to pay for the library service within the building.

“It was the Friends who subsequently formed a charity – Hungerford Library & Community Trust – and devolved themselves into the Hub team. Together, the trustees of the charity and the Hub team raise funds to finance and run the building, and it is entirely their efforts that have made the handing of the library to the community a success.

“All this has nothing to do with the Conservatives or any party member and it is entirely wrong to infer otherwise. To use the work of the dedicated people of this town to further political gain is nothing short of disgraceful.”

Stuck in a Commercial Lease Expansion, contraction, suitability – there are many reasons why a business needs to exit a lease early. But getting out can be a hard task and one dependant on the terms of the lease. If there is no legal or contractual way of leaving, any attempts to do so could lead to the landlord bringing a claim against the business and this will often be for the money due had the lease been performed.

The main ways of leaving are: Termination A clean break is the best option. Leases will have a list of conditions which allow them to be terminated.

These are usually limited and tend to be in the landlord’s favour. However, there might be a break clause: this allows the relevant party the opportunity to end the lease after a set amount of time.

Surrender If there is no break clause it may be possible to negotiate an exit with a landlord: this is surrendering the lease. This can only be done with the landlord’s agreement and will often depend on the current rental market – few landlords will risk an empty property in a bad market. A landlord will usually require a surrender premium before agreeing to this, and it is often considerable.

Assignment The lease will likely have clauses regarding any right to assigning the lease (passing it on to another business). This is something of a half-way house. There are normally requirements and restrictions imposed on the tenant seeking to assign, potentially including guaranteeing payments made by the new tenant – which can be risky. Not just any person can be found, as most leases require the landlord’s permission to be given before allowing assignment.

Sub-Letting Again, there are usually clauses stating the requirements and restrictions on any subletting. This will have another tenant take over your obligations and cover your rent all while you remain a tenant. The terms of any sub-lease will usually be the same as yours, and it will often lead to you taking on a managerial role in acting between the landlord, yourself and the sub-tenant.

If you do find yourself needing to exit a lease it is best to take professional advice as the amounts involved are often considerable.

Hungerford Bookshop’s Crime Season

W

e’re halfway through the Hungerford Bookshop’s Crime Season, and still to go there’s Suzanna M. Newstead in costume talking about her Savernake novels on May 14th, as well as winner of the CWA Cartier Diamond Dagger (for life-long excellence in the genre) Andrew Taylor speaking about his popular Marwood & Lovett Restoration series on May 22nd.

That’s not to say there aren’t other Bookshop events that have little or nothing to do with crime, but are still worth attending in their own write (sorry).

For example, there’s the new collaboration between the Bookshop and The Pheasant at Shefford Woodlands for a series of ‘Meet the Author

Suppers’. The first is on May 2nd with author Frances Liardet. Spaces are limited so don’t hang around to book (no tickets on-line, so pop in to The Pheasant or the Bookshop, and collect the book at the same time).

And on May 9th, the Bookshop’s Emma talks to author Elizabeth Macneal about her novel “The Doll Factory” – an intoxicating story of a young woman who aspires to be an artist, and the man whose obsession may destroy her world for ever.

Around the world in 80 days – on a bike?

Lambourn Country Show

reat news for those hoping to visit the Lambourn Spring Country Show last year, but who were disappointed by its cancellation because the showground was waterlogged.

This year, unless someone’s been secretly building an Ark in their back garden because they know something the rest of us don’t know, there’ll be no chance of any of the rare animal breeds or any of the vintage machinery on display at the Show sinking into the ground.

The same goes for visitors wanting to get up close to those rare breeds, or that vintage machinery, the funfair, the Auto Jumble, any of the stationary and notso-stationary engines from all across the country and everything else at the Show that nobody could enjoy last year. Thanks to new drainage at the showground nobody’s even going to get their feet even slightly wet. (Weather permitting, of course.)

The Show takes place at Lambourn Woodlands (RG17 7RY) on Sunday May 5th, starting at 11:00 am and continuing until 5:00 pm. Entry starts at £2.00 for youngsters, goes up to £4.00 for OAPs and tickets for everybody else are a snip at £5.00 for what promises to be a magical day out for one and all.

What one should be doing in the garden

hen news reached us that there was a vacancy within the team of Royal Gardeners, we weren’t all that impressed by the starting salary. But then we discovered there was a 15% employer contribution to a pension scheme, all meals were provided and to top it all off, we’d enjoy accommodation at a prestigious London address: Buckingham Palace, London SW1A 1AA. So it seemed a logical move to brush up on our minimal gardening knowledge before registering our current abode with Airbnb and bluffing our way into Buck House.

With that in mind, we quizzed the those awfully nice people on the interweb and, should the Royal Interviewer ask us what one ought to be doing around all those acres of Royal Garden these days, this is how they said we should reply: One needs to keep weeds well under control, and around April weeds which live for a year or less don’t have deep roots, meaning one can hoe them up and leave them to dry out on the ground. Weeds that live longer than that need to be dug and/or pulled out with as much root on them as possible.

Late frosts are still possible even towards the end of April, and they can be devastating. So one should be making use of at least one layer of fleece, or cloches. These should be in place before one retires to the Palace for supper, and removed the following morning after a proper breakfast. One should also make sure any grass around the base of flowering trees is kept short, to enable

any heat in the soil to radiate upwards.

This is the time of year when one should be sowing hardy annuals, herbs and wild flower seeds outdoors. That would include vegetables for later this year, such as peas, carrots, beans and onions. And fresh vegetables always make one’s annus so much less horribilis, don’t they? Sowing can be done when the soil is moist and warmed up after the winter, once one’s dug over the beds and let the soil there settle. One should create a straight trench by pressing a stake or cane into the soil to mark where the seeds should go, and then water that trench before scattering those seeds into it and covering them with soil.

And at this time of year, one should definitely sort out bare patches on lawns, either with new turf or seed – essential for the upcoming croquet and garden party season. One would get better results if one pre-germinates the seed in moist compost in a bucket covered with clingfilm, stashed somewhere warm but not above 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Once one sees small white roots developing, the seeds can then be scattered where they’re needed and covered with topsoil or compost.

Obviously there’s much, much more to do round the Royal Gardens at this time of year so if you’ll excuse us, there’s a lot more horticultural studying we need to get under our belt. And if you need to get in touch with us in a hurry this summer, well, you’ll know where to find us.

e hear so much these days about chemical cleaning products not actually being as good for us as we’ve been led to believe... and once seen, those heartbreaking images of single-use plastic containers clogging up miles of ocean surface can never be forgotten.

Obviously we need cleaning products, and equally obviously we need to keep plastic packaging to a minimum, and here’s our chance to do both at the same time thanks to Packaging Not Included in Marlborough.

T

he Hungerford Resource Centre is a purpose-built centre providing services for adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and for those with frailty and dementia.

There are a range of meaningful occupational, creative and therapeutic activities on offer, including computer sessions, trips out, cooking, crafts, flower arranging, jewellery making, swimming and much more – including the Centre’s own Tovertafel.

Translated into English, that would be “magic table” and magic, to those using the centre – and their carers – it most certainly is.

The magic comes from an overhead projector beaming interactive images down onto a tabletop. These images react to users’ hand movements to create anything from patternmatching games… to music and its notation… and even tabletop football games!

Now, thanks to a generous donation from Hungerford Rotary Club, the Centre will be purchasing additional Tovertafel software to provide more magic than ever before on that magic table.

It’s election season!

ust a reminder that West Berkshire residents have their own council elections to vote in on May 2nd, and that everyone in the UK is expected to tick the appropriate box on the European election ballot form on May 23rd.

At least that’s the theory, anyway: it all depends on whether we’re still in the EU at the time – if we are, whoever we vote for won’t have to take their seat in the European Parliament until July 2nd.

And if nothing happens in the way of Brexit to prevent it, our seventy-odd MEPs will have to show up in Strasbourg to claim their eight and a half thousand monthly euro salaries (before deductions, but with all sorts of other allowances on top).

But they’ll all be pleased to know that their presence will only be required for three weeks before their paid holiday starts… and continues throughout the whole of August while back here many local councillors are still finding their newly-elected feet.

Nice work if you can get it!

Watch out for adders!

N

ow the temperature’s finally rising, adders who’ve been hibernating all winter are waking up, yawning and stretching whatever it is they stretch after a nice long sleep. And April, we’re told, is the month when it’s most likely curious dogs being walked in woodlands and forests find themselves being bitten.

Even though adders are the only poisonous snake in Britain and they only use their venom as a very last resort, that doesn’t make them any less dangerous to inquisitive dogs taking an innocent sniff at them.

So if you’re aware that your dog’s been on the receiving end of a bite from a grumpy adder (clues include changes to heart and breathing rates, raised temperature, vomiting, swelling around the bite area which is usually around the face and front paws), you’re advised to leave that bite area well alone and get your pet to a vet as soon as possible.

And even though cowboy lore had it that sucking the venom out of a rattlesnake bite wound was the way to go, more modern medics tell us that venom enters the bloodstream far too quickly for that to be effective, so don’t even think about it. Just get to the vet ASAP – OK?

ungerford Hares Running Club recently launched its Beginners Programme. It’s suitable for all ability levels from complete novices to lapsed runners who want to return to the sport, and there’s still spaces for anyone who wants to sign up.

The programme gently guides participants on their way to completing a 5K run, and Run Leader Simon Hodkin says: “All our run leaders and members will be there to support our beginners each and every step of the way. We know it takes time to train our bodies to run and nobody will be rushed or pushed too early.

STOP PRESS: HAREY 8 OPEN FOR ENTRIES This year’s Harey 8 will be held on Sunday 23rd June at 10am and will start from the Triangle Field at Hungerford Rugby Club.

The Hares will be teaming up with the Macular Society as its charity partner to help raise awareness of macular disease.

The Harey 8 is one of four races in the Run West Berks Series, and there will also be children’s races and a 2km open fun run on the day.

ungerford Cricket Club have enjoyed well attended preseason nets at Newbury College, and are looking forward to the coming season. The Club runs two sides on a Saturday in the Hampshire League, and has a thriving youth section for ages nine to fifteen playing in the Berkshire Youth League. The Club plays on one of the best grounds in the area and is always on the lookout for new players, for whom a warm welcome awaits.

Join the Crusade at Hungerford Town!

ungerford Town are looking to retain their National League South status in their final match of the season this weekend against East Thurrock, following their dramatic win at champions Torquay United in front of a record crowd on Easter Monday.

Manager Ian Herring is confident that things are looking up for the team, and that they will be continuing to play at the sixth tier of English football, their highest level yet, next season.

“As a whole group we are becoming harder to beat”, he says.

“This season has been a rollercoaster for many reasons.

Yesterday was one of the highs but that will be no good if we don't finish the job on Saturday”.

A bumper crowd is expected to turn up for this crunch match, for one of the most important matches in the club’s history.

“Hungerford has a wonderful football club with amazing people involved” says Herring. “It's your town and your club!

Come down, give us your support and see what fantastic work is being done”.

Gates open at 12:30pm on Saturday with tickets priced at £12 for adults, £6 for concessions and free of charge entry for under 14’s.
