t must be something in the water: not only did Hungerford Council choose a new Mayor not so long ago (OK, so perhaps new isn’t quite the right word, since Cllr Simpson is carrying on her own mayoral tradition that started this time last year)... ... but Mervyn Hall, Marlborough’s newest (and 709th) Mayor, is now continuing his own personal mayoral tradition – one which he started last time he was chosen as Mayor back in 2017. Perhaps, though, apart from being seen in some seriously fine official robes Mayor Hall isn’t going to continue another one of his traditions which began quite some time ago – that of being a successful babywear model. And that was one bit of information which surprised and tickled many of the audience at the recent Mayor Making Ceremony, which included councillors, former Mayors, community representatives, Deputy Lieutenant Dr David Hemery, The High Sheriff of Wiltshire David Scott and Mrs Letitia Scott, the Mayor of Swindon Councillor Junab Ali, The Right Reverend Dr. Andrew Rumsey, Bishop of Ramsbury... plus friends and family, including Mayor Hall’s grandchildren. Continued from page 1 Another Marlborough tradition which started much longer ago is that of presenting gifts to the new Mayor. This time round, these were in the form of miniature models of the animals appearing on the crest of the Town Council: one bull, two chickens and two dogs. But long ago the new Mayor would have gone home after the Ceremony with the real thing. Outgoing Mayor Lisa Farrell presented cheques for just over £600 to each of her seven chosen charities before being thanked for her services to the town and described as a “people’s Mayor” as well as “a hard act to follow”. And as for the new Mayor? “It pleases me greatly” said Mayor Hall, “to be serving the community and having the opportunity to put something back into the community where my grandchildren are growing up.”

Changes to Tenants’ Fees On June 1st, the Tenant Fees Act 2019 will come into force. Its purpose is to remove hidden costs being imposed in connection with tenants’ housing in England. The changes being made are quite considerable and will impact on all landlords, letting agents and tenants. Amongst the changes are that certain fees from landlords and letting agents will be prohibited. These include:  Letting fees, including viewing, inventory, referencing, contract preparation and credit checks.  High deposits for pets, unless the total security deposit cap has not been

exceeded.  Payments such as a fixed penalty charge.  Gardening and professional cleaning services, unless included in the rent.  Tenancy renewal fees.  Increasing rent to offset the loss of payments that are now prohibited. It is important that all landlords and letting agents review their contracts and policies before June 1st. Equally, all tenants should understand what fees they should no longer be paying. If you do have any landlord and tenant issues we are happy to see how we can help.

Youth and Community Centre’s dream come true

F

or so many years it’s been at the top of Hungerford’s Youth and Community Centre’s volunteers’ wish list – and now it’s become a reality. For some, those twenty-three tons of tarmac might just be a large amount of sticky black stuff, but for the Centre, it’s the new surface of its outdoor court, almost ready for all kinds of outdoor summer activities once new painted lines for multi skills use (plus six-a-side goalposts) are in place. That’s not to say it’s not being used right now: the youth team at St Lawrence’s Church is already making the most out of the facilities; they are running a ‘Drop in and Play Football’ session on Fridays between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. (for more info, call James on 07778144980). Now after much investment and funding (with thanks to Greenham Trust, Hungerford Town Council and Broadmead Estates) grazed knees on loose gravel are now a thing of the past and, looking to the future, the official opening takes place on June 8th between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. Entry will be free, all are welcome. For more details, please e-mail Charlie at clerk@hungerfordyc.org.uk or visit the Centre’s website: www.hungerfordyc.org.uk

his bank holiday weekend sees Crofton hosting a science fair and a celebration of the life of steam engineer James Watt (who came up with the concept of “horsepower”, and had a certain unit of measurement named after him). Two eminent experts will be giving talks about Watt: Dr. Sally Dickson will talk about his life, work and association with the Lunar Society, while Dr. Malcolm Dick will pay homage to Watt with his talk “The Power to Change the World – James Watt: A Life in 50 Objects”. ust because school’s out for the week, it doesn’t mean the learning process has to come to a complete halt. For example, for youngsters between the ages of 5 and 14 who fancy themselves as up and coming gourmet chefs, but who haven’t quite got the hang of filleting fish yet, there’s “Fishy Fun for Mini Steins” at Rick Stein, Marlborough. It’s an hour-long interactive session to learn more about sea creatures in general, including how to cook them. That’s Tuesday and Wednesday May 28th and 29th at Rick Stein, Marlborough. More information and booking at www.rickstein.com. But perhaps you’ve got older children (10+) who’d prefer to keep out of the kitchen and instead write stories – in which case you might be interested in the Creative Writing workshop hosted by Elements of Avebury. It’s a friendly and supportive session for budding storytellers at upper Key Stage 2 and higher, covering areas such as world-building, plotting the story, creating characters and

spectrum members of the Institute of Physics will be demonstrating special engines that run on nothing but heat. At the other end of that spectrum Badminton School staff and pupils will be performing some amazing experiments with liquid nitrogen and superconductors entitled, aptly, “Life in the Freezer”. Admission to these talks and demonstrations is completely free, and, of course, the twohundred-year-old coal-fired pumping engines will be hard at work and open for viewing. developing dialogue. That’s from 10:15 am to 12:45 pm on Thursday May 30th at Elements of Avebury. More details and booking at www. aveburyworkshops.co.uk. Then again, still at Elements that Thursday, but from 1:30 to 4:00 pm, budding thespians aged seven upwards could sharpen their stagecraft skills at “Twisting the Tale” – a drama workshop suitable for any drama ability from complete novice to potential three-time Oscar winner. Participants will take a familiar tale and give it a twist while learning how to devise theatre, work as an ensemble and create good storytelling theatre. And in doing so they’ll be developing their confidence, learning to work in a team and honing their communication skills. Again, details and booking at www. aveburyworkshops.co.uk. So even though it may be halfterm, the learning process can still continue until everybody’s safely back at school once more.

W

e all want to write better, and Benjamin Dreyer is here to help. He’ll impart some of his wisdom as he talks to bestselling novelist Rachel Joyce on June 4th in an evening event hosted by the Hungerford Bookshop at Hungerford Town Hall. As the copy chief for publisher Random House, Dreyer has upheld the standards of the legendary publisher for more than two decades. He is beloved by authors and editors alike – not to mention his followers on social media – for playfully, brilliantly deconstructing the English language. Dreyer’s English is the distillation of everything he has learned from copyediting thousands of books, the perfect guide not just for writers but for everyone who wants to put their best prose foot forward. Both authoritative and amusing, Dreyer’s English offers lessons on punctuation, from the underloved semicolon to the enigmatic en-dash; the rules and nonrules of grammar, including why it’s OK to begin a sentence with “And” or “But” and to confidently split an infinitive; and why it’s best to avoid the doldrums of the Wan Intensifiers and Throat Clearers, including “very,” “rather,” “of course,” and the dreaded “actually.” Stuffed with advice, insider wisdom, and fun facts, this book will prove to be invaluable to everyone who wants to shore up their writing skills, mandatory for people who spend their time editing and shaping other people’s prose, and – perhaps best of all – an utter treat for anyone who simply revels in language. See you there!

Well, at £815 a head (excluding VAT) it seemed a little pricey since that private table seats eight, which works out to the grand total of £7824, VAT included. But with Epsom still firmly in mind, we wondered 01635 898893 * what else we could do with that £7824, and a little online ) 07548 249131 investigation revealed that we could use it for the purchase of pbarnard@kennetblinds.com)* 186 25-kilogram bags of Magnesium Sulfate, AKA 4650 kilos of www.kennetblinds.com )* Epsom Salts... and still have a little bit of change left over for a Derby punt at our local bookies. Vegetables and houseplants, we’re told, like it too. Or to of Hungerford Common buy one or two of the racehorses. But why are Epsom Salts so good for us? It’s all to do with the admin@humphries–stonemasons.co.uk magnesium – essential for every kind of cell in the human www.humphries–stonemasons.co.uk body, especially those in the brain and heart. And even though perhaps those salts are best known for getting things, er, moving, rather like cod liver oil, prunes and senna, elsewhere in the bathroom, they can be used as an exfoliant, blackhead dislodger, hairspray remover and hair volumiser. High Sheriff of Berkshire Award for Roger Beard

S

ometimes the Freedom of the Town Award doesn’t quite go far enough to express appreciation for how much a person has done for Hungerford. Take, for example, the case of Roger Beard, who received his Freedom of the Town Award in 2015 mainly in recognition of his commitment to Hungerford’s Cricket Club since back in 1957 – first as a player in the second eleven, and subsequently in the first team, which he captained. From there, he became Club Chairman and President, while still managing to find time to act as a member of the War Memorial Committee, as a trustee of the Town and Manor and as a governor of John O’Gaunt School, which included a two-year stint as Vice-Chairman. So it was with great pleasure that Hungerford’s Mayor Helen Simpson thanked Roger even more for his services to the town by representing him and his family at the recent High Sheriff of Berkshire Awards Ceremony at Shaw House in Newbury. “Roger”, she says, “is a valued member of the Hungerford community and thoroughly deserves to be recognised as an ambassador for our town.” And so say all of us.

Town Band’s full house

W

ith their Stevenage Regional Contest trophy proudly on display, the Hungerford Town Band played to a full house at the Corn Exchange at their recent Annual Spring Concert. Highlights of the show included “Rusalka’s Song to the Moon” and, of course, the band’s award-winning First Suite in Eb by Gustav Holst (which we’re presently listening to on the Adviser headphones, and very listenable it is, too. You can listen to it on your own headset by googling “youtube 1st suite in Eb Hungerford”). But the Regional Contest Trophy wasn’t the only award which featured that evening: MD Tim Crouter also presented The Trustees Challenge Cup for outstanding contribution to the Band over the years to cornet player Samantha Newton. The Band will be providing a tuneful finale to this year’s Hungerford Summer Festival. The concert, entitled “Movie Magic”, starts at 7:00 pm at the Corn Exchange on Sunday July 14th . Between now and then, though, you’re always welcome to enjoy sitting in on their rehearsals (no headphones required)... or join the Band... or even book the Band for an occasion of your own. You can find out when, where and how by contacting Tim via www. hungerfordtownband.org.uk.

Thank you, Beavers!

Y

ou may have noticed Hungerford getting smarter and smarter these days, and that’s all down to John Willmott and volunteers all working together under the heading of “Smarten Up Hungerford”. It’s not quite like painting the Forth Bridge (which had been going on continuously since 1890 – until it all stopped when someone

Design your bespoke rings at a free home visit

bought a different type of paint in 2011) but smartening up the town does look to be an ongoing process. But when more than twenty local Beavers, led by Lindsey Fraser, descended on the playground area, the Memorial Gardens and the cricket ground off Bulpit Lane, the phrase “Many hands make light work” was never truer, because it didn’t take all that long before all three places were completely litter-free. And that, said John, not only helped remove a lot of rubbish from public places, but also instilled in the children to be community minded in the future. If you’re already community minded and would like to help with the process of smartening up Hungerford, whether by lending a hand, doing a bit of carpentry or even providing a spot of sponsorship, do please email John at smartenuphungerford@gmail.com.

Crop circles – continued

W

hen we checked out the Crop Circle Exhibition at the Honeystreet Mill Café last July, it looked like it was going to close the following month. But it didn’t close as expected, and is still going from strength to strength. The exhibition features some wonderful images – geometric or otherwise – and a fascinating history combining crop circle facts, theories and superstitions. And around now, a visit to the exhibition not only prepares us for this summer’s upcoming cereological offerings, but also provides an excuse (as if we needed one) for a leisurely and delightful stop at the Café itself.

WORD MOUTH OF

The Fortnightly Adviser is published by a team of three. Sarah and Simon Carreck, who handle the design, writing and advertising sales, and Simon Hobden who handles advertising sales inserts, and printing. All three have all had long experience in the publishing, printing and design sectors and all have a long association with the area. The Fortnightly Adviser circulates to circa 14,000 readers in the towns of Hungerford and Marlborough each fortnight and also to all the surrounding villages on a rotational basis. We are an independent publication, keen to promote businesses in the community. We have free space to publicise local events if there is a charitable or good cause involved – but that free space is limited. We publish fortnightly. The magazine has been trading for 30 years with some advertisers being present all of that time. It is hand distributed to residences and businesses throughout the area by independent deliverers. The best possible care is taken to assure thorough distribution. Please ring Sarah or Simon Hobden with your advertisement requirements or Simon Carreck with editorial copy and notices. Our contact details are: Simon C – 01488 685481. Sarah C – 07932 096382. Simon H – 07831 446464. Printed by Ridgeway Press. in the UK.

ungerford’s Perfectly Posh Hair Design has been selected as one of the finalists in next month’s Salon Business Awards, to be held at London’s Mondrian Hotel on June 10th. The awards comprise 14 categories, and Perfectly Posh is one of the eight finalists in the Creative Salon category, and so automatically becomes a finalist for the competition’s highest accolade – the Ultimate Salon of the Year. No stranger to hairdressing awards herself, Perfectly Posh owner Krysia Eddery says “We... love that our hard work and drive for the hairdressing industry has been recognised. Here’s to the final in London this June!” So… fingers crossed, then!
