H

ere’s a couple of lovely – and lively! – soirees at Andover’s The Lights: Moscow Drug Club are “a curious musical place where elements of Berlin Cabaret, Hot Club de France, French Musette and Storytelling meet”, while The BIG Chris Barber Band is led by one of the last British jazz legends around these days.

The five-piece Moscow Drug Club have already made their presence felt in Pewsey’s Bouverie Hall and at the Marlborough Jazz Festival (and, less locally, the Royal Albert Hall) with their original material. In addition, they perform songs by such artists as Jacques Brel, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Bertolt Brecht and Duke Ellington. Chris Barber has only been leading his BIG band for 65 years now, but he’s been in the music business for a little bit longer, bringing American blues artists over to this side of the Atlantic in the 1950s. His ten-piece band’s repertoire features “everything from New Orleans to blues to late 20’s Ellington”, and it’s almost certain you’ll be hearing them play classics like Bourbon Street Parade, Jubilee Stomp, Petite Fleur, Ice Cream and When the Saints Go Marching In on Wednesday February 13th.

So many lemons, so little time

W

ell, that’s the last of the New Year celebration G&Ts (with ice and a slice) gone, but there’s still a sizeable pile of leftover lemons to find a use for before they all go off.

So we had a look at the interweb for inspiration, and discovered there was more to the average lemon than we’d originally thought.

In the bathroom, for example, half a lemon will get the gunge off glass shower doors (you can dip it into baking soda first for a deeper cleanse).

If you’re looking for an efficient exfoliant with the minimum of added chemicals, then squeeze the juice out of the other half of that lemon and mix it with a tablespoon of olive oil, half a cup of granulated sugar and a tablespoon of honey.

For acne, leaving a dab of lemon juice on the affected area for ten minutes before rinsing it off – first thing in the morning and last thing at night – is said to be very effective.

And if there are water lines and rust stains in your loo bowl, a paste of laundry borax and lemon juice left on those stains for a couple of hours should make them easy to scrub away.

Downstairs in the kitchen, we’re told the acid in the juice of a half lemon dipped in salt should lift stains on a marble worktop left by coffee, tea or tomato-based foods. -Just don’t leave that juice on the stain long enough for the acid in the juice to start eating away at the marble itself.

Some foods can stain plastic, melamine and even ceramic, but

leaving such items in boiling water with the juice of two or three lemons and their rinds for three or four hours should lift those stains enough for them to be cleaned off.

The mineral deposits in kettles and coffee makers can be washed away by running two complete heating cycles, first with the addition of a half cup of lemon juice, and second with just plain water.

Half a lemon on a saucer will keep your fridge smelling sweet.

And to get rid of the accumulated mung in the microwave with minimal effort, add a quarter of a cup of lemon juice to two cups of water in a microwaveable glass container. Then heat the mixture until it’s boiled and the microwave is all steamed up.

Leave it for ten minutes before opening it up and wipe the inside down.

While we’re still in the kitchen, simmering several slices of lemon (with peel) in a saucepan of plain water for an hour or so will create a natural air freshener to blow away those stale cooking smells.

There’s all sorts of other uses for lemons and their juice but strangely enough, nobody – anywhere online – suggested slicing one and popping it into a G&T. Then again, lemon juice also goes very nicely with cinnamon, cloves and warmed wine for a nice mulled winter glow.

And at this time of year, who needs any more ice – with or without a slice – anyway?

Tenancy and Eviction

With home ownership being increasingly replaced by tenancies, people should be aware that there are some legal rights afforded tenants. One of the most important of these is a tenant’s protections regarding eviction that apply to assured shorthold tenancies.

Assured shorthold tenancies are the most common type of tenancy and they are either of a fixed term, or one which runs from week to week or month to month with no end date. There are other types of tenancy though, so it is best to check what sort of tenancy you have.

The landlord cannot just evict those in an assured shorthold tenancy. They have two options, to serve what is known as a Section 21 Notice, or serve what called a Section 8 Notice.

Section 21 Notices are for use when the landlord wants their property back after expiry of the tenancy. A Section 21 Notice must be served at least 2 months before the eviction date and if there is a periodic tenancy the tenants must be allowed to stay until the last paid for rent period expires.

set out in the Section 21 Notice that the landlord can apply to court for an order to evict the tenant.

The Section 8 eviction notice can by served during the tenancy but only regards breaches of tenancy. Again, the tenant must be given a time (between 2 weeks and 2 months depending on the breach) to vacate and only after this has expired can the landlord apply for an order a possession order. As before, the landlord cannot evict the tenant without the order but, of course, the tenant can leave within the notice period. Some grounds for the Section 8 Notice oblige the court to give an possession order and some require the courts consideration and agreement.

It is important to remember that the landlord can and usually does claim for rent arrears if the tenant stays without paying, and they are usually awarded to the landlord by the court.

The Fortnightly Adviser is published by a team of three. ungerford Methodist Church would like to thank the many people who supported the Christmas Day Lunch at their Church Hall.

This couldn’t have happened without the volunteers who gave so freely of their time beforehand and on the day… or the very generous support of local businesses, especially Christian Alba Butchers and M&P Hardware… and also CHAIN and other volunteer drivers who provided transport.

This support meant that around thirty guests – who would otherwise have been alone on the day – could enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner, complete with all kinds of entertainment and, of course, a visit from Father Christmas himself.

Spot the pothole

A

ccording to “Which?” your chances of claiming pothole damage compensation often depend on whether the hole in question had been reported or not.

We have to say that in our experience reporting a pothole to the West Berkshire Council is a lot more straightforward than trying to tell Wiltshire Council.

West Berkshire’s website instantly presents you with a map for you to mark the location of your favourite pothole. Sorted.

On the other hand, it took a while before we received the email from Wiltshire Council confirming that we’d signed up for their “My Wiltshire” scheme – which we need to use to send in a pothole report.

Either way, someone, somewhere could end up being very grateful to you for letting your council know about the pothole that didn’t do their suspension any good.

Vanarama National League South Match Report January 26th, at Bulpit Lane, Hungerford Hungerford Town: 0, Hemel Hempstead: 3 emel Hempstead strolled to a comfortable three-nil victory over Hungerford Town, who as a result fall into the bottom three. Hemel were in charge from start to finish despite Hungerford’s high press causing problems early on. The visitors’ Jordan Parkes was instrumental in the win, and miscued an early chance before making no mistake from close range minutes later to give Hemel the lead. Rob Sinclair nearly added a quick second but couldn’t get on the end of a low cross. Danilo Orsi-Dadomo side-footed wide from a deep Alfy Whittingham cross. Two goals in three minutes were to give the Tudors complete control. Firstly Steve Cawley finished off a fine team move before Herschel Sanchez-Watt tucked home into the corner of the net. Tarik Moore-Azill saved the hosts more embarrassment with a lastditch challenge on Sinclair when a fourth was looming. Cameron Hargreaves fired over as the Crusaders still searched for a route back into the match. Sanchez-Watt was denied by an excellent Michael Luyambula save before at the other end Orsi-Dadomo had a volley tipped over the bar from Laurie Walker.

After the interval Hemel controlled proceedings looking for a fourth goal whilst keeping the Crusaders at bay. Sinclair headed over from close range after a through ball from Parkes. A long direct ball found Sanchez-Watt through on goal, but Moore-Azill covered well and blocked the shot. Hungerford had some late attempts to salvage a consolation goal. Hargreaves smashed the post, and James Rusby had a long-range effort tipped round the post by Walker, before having a header cleared off the line.
