n February 1st Transition Marlboroigh is presenting the French Film Tomorrow (French: Demain). This will be screened at Marlborough Youth and Community Centre - doors open 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start.

Tomorrow is the 2015 documentary film made by French filmmakers Cyril Dion and Mélanie Laurent. Faced with a future that scientists say is a great cause for concern, the film has the distinction of not giving in to catastrophising. Optimistically, it identifies initiatives that have proven themselves in ten countries around the world: concrete examples of solutions to environmental and social challenges of the twenty-first century, be it agriculture, energy, economy, education and governance.

Unusually for a documentary film, Tomorrow exceeded a million entries in France. It won the 2016 César Award for Best Documentary Film and has been distributed in 27 countries so far. (Mostly in English with occasional subtitling)

East Enders BBC Thursday 25th January «««««

So, East Enders has finally ‘jumped the shark’ – that moment, where, bereft of ideas, the script-writing team throws in the towel and concocts a story-line so preposterous that all belief is suspended and the viewer realises, ‘This must end NOW!’ It derived from Happy Days back in the 70s and comes at that point in a series’ life where the energy has gone, the enthusiasm to create good drama is no longer present and the staff just want to head off to the nearest pub, or boozer as EE would have it.

Last Thursday’s episode reached a nadir after many near misses recently. The Vic is going ‘dahn the Swanee’ and only a massive injection of cash can save it from the evil developers, headed by Mr. Dastardly himself, Wilmott-Brown (William Boyde) and his sneaky daughter, Fi (Lisa Faulkner). The most implausible heist in TV or cinema history has yielded the square root of diddly-squat to help keep the Queen Vic going, save a ring which new boy, HalfWay (or Wit, or whatever) (Tony Clay) has found and with which he tries to woo Whitney (Shona McGarty), unsuccessfully. He leaves the ring in the Vic only for Mick Kah-Uh (Danny Dyer) to find it.

He gets a mate, Joey the Wig (Sebastian Abineri) (now wigless) to value it, and, surprise, surprise, it’s worth a cool £200 grand, more than enough to save the pub. Whoopee! How he is going to fence the ring in the very short time he has to save the pub is another matter which wasn’t alluded to – but the ring is worth a mint. Mick fesses up to Half-Way but Half-Way says, ‘Keep it – in exchange for a permanent room at the Vic’ – quite an exchange. Maybe there’s some hidden gilded temple of wondrousness in the Vic we haven’t yet seen that’s worth that amount of money for rent. Mick jumps at the chance – or rather, slowly mumbles some lines as if trying them out for size.

Anyway, in true EE, ham-fisted attempt at humour, the motley crew drop the ring on the kitchen floor in their excitement. Mick’s mutt, Lady Di, snaffles it, of course, while they stand around gesticulating wildly á la Joe Cocker. Off trots the young son to the chemist to purchase an overdose of Milk of Magnesia with which to purge poor Lady Di. Fair play, EE, I did find out the famous Milk can be used as a laxative, not just for treating stomach acid, so time not entirely wasted. They ply the poor bulldog with the stuff, and wait to comic effect, for the medicine to run its natural course.

What a pantomime of laughter ensued! The dog breaks wind, the smell is atrocious. The one plus point is that Shirley (Linda Henry) was forced to cover her mush with a tea towel so we were spared that nasty, bitter face for an all-too-brief while. In what must be a world record for laxative efficacy, Lady Di does her business and the ring is retrieved. Mick calls Fi – all bets are off and the Vic is saved!

Fi isn’t seen on camera – must have a better gig creating some exotic dish with Mr. Torode. So, what does an East End boozer do to celebrate? Why, they get in an anonymous joanna-tinkler who whips up a storm with a rendition of ... Knees Up Muvva Brahn?

Nah, too clichéd – try The Lambeth Walk! That’s more like it! The racist launderette attendant, Karen Taylor (Lorraine Stanley) throws her hands to heaven and, wait, what’s this – calls for a conga! Off they go round the Square, all that is save Max Branning (Jake Wood) – he’s too busy quaffing litres of water to moisten his tear ducts for the next round of sob-festivity. In the meantime a bitter Stace (Lacey Turner) and Martin (James Bye) are embroiled in a childcustody battle ... but that can wait for another day.

Let the last word be with Mick C: ‘Be a diamond, L: look after the gaff for a mo’ – I gotta climb the apples to the khazi for a pony, have a butchers at the Current, and get back for a bubble with the punters’. And so say we all!- BW

Spring is in the Air!

There is something really exciting about this time of the year – despite the grey skies, cold rain and biting winds if you look closely the plants and trees are waking up. I was driving around our lovely county recently and was thrilled to see a burst of white snowdrops on the roadside verge.

On a trip to Lacock, having parked the car, I investigated the hedgerow (a thing I am known to do, much to the consternation of innocent bystanders!) to see wild garlic throwing some great fresh green leaves out, a few hardy spears of new grass and just the hint of celandines peeking through too- if you look there is a lot going on. However, the problem is people don’t look and we seem to be getting further and further away from even the most basic form of nature knowledge – children don’t seem to know a sparrow from a sparrowhawk and as for flowers and trees, forget it – and it isn’t their fault at all. I know that schools hardly have a moment spare in their curriculum and parents work long hours and so are more inclined to hand out an electronic device rather than go for a walk in the park and who can blame them, especially on a cold grey day! But we depend on all of our plants and trees and creatures for just about everything that keeps our planet alive, so if we don’t know how it all works how can we make good decisions for its, and our, future?

There are lots of local organisations offering free stuff to get kids involved in the world around them, there are clubs and events, there are bug hunts and pond dipping and den building and all of the things that kids love – getting muddy, splashing in puddles and if there are muddy jeans and soggy socks at the end of it all, who cares – that’s what washing machines are for!

Volunteers Wanted for Marlborough Youth Club

A

problem common to both Hungerford and Marlborough is, that despite funding for renovations there is still a lack of volunteers to support the new facilities. At the beginning of the year The Adviser reported on the opening of the Marlborough Community and Youth Centre. This, along with a Youth Club in Wesley Hall, Oxford Street, is proving very popular. However, to keep the enthusiasm going a cry is going out for volunteers to assist both on Fridays and Thursdays, Friday at the Community and Youth Centre and Thursday in Wesley Hall. Three people are required for each venue and a rota can be established from what is hoped to be a large number. PICK OF THE POSTBAG BAD ATTITUDE! Dear Editor, I was astonished and distressed to read the letter in your last Issue wherein a huge complaint was made about drivers’ attitudes to pedestrians in Hungerford. I use pedestrian crossings in our town at least 4 or 5 times daily. Drivers stop obediently once I set foot on the crossing - even offering a smile in many cases; never has a car failed. However, one courtesy deserves another and pedestrians should always

thank those drivers – whether by a smile, hand signal, nod of head or whatever. Pedestrians must also be considerate and not rush over the road without checking the oncoming traffic and taking advantage of a suitable gap.

Upper Eddington Dispute Fencing Plans Along Kennet Footpath

A

reader has written in to express consternation at fencing being erected in Upper Eddington. There is the possibility of an eight-foot high closed, wooden fence on the open aspect of the Kennet. It is intended that this fence will be positioned the length of the public footpath. While the Adviser cannot comment on this issue as we are not in possession of the full facts, we would like to hear from other readers who might be affected or, from an alternative perspective, might be fine with this turn of events.

CROSS ROADS! THE SEQUEL

Dear Editor, re. ‘Cross Roads’ I walk my daughter to and from school in Hungerford every day, with my son in his pushchair.

Almost every day drivers fail to stop at the pedestrian crossings or wait until we have crossed before continuing. At the crossing by the Bear, I was almost hit by a van whose driver slowed towards the crossing then sped up and continued through, although I was on it (he was looking at his phone). If I had had my son with me I have no idea how I would have pulled his pushchair back in time. At the crossing near the Town Hall a driver who had stopped for the previous pedestrian decided she could not wait any longer

and drove through even though there were four people crossing (myself included), three with pushchairs. Drivers regularly fail to stop at the crossing near the Co-Op garage, or slow down to check that nobody is emerging from the (often) stationary traffic on the other side. I understand that the crossings are not in the greatest places, but this is not the fault of the pedestrian, nor is it an excuse for dangerous driving.

ARK Encourages Trout Husbandry in Local Schools

C

harity and Rivers Trust Action for the River Kennet (ARK) are delivering their Trout in School project to five schools in the Kennet catchment Marlborough St Mary's, Kennet Valley Primary, Ramsbury Primary, Emmer Green Primary and Meadow Park Primary. This is a really exciting project they have been running for a number of years as part of their Water Matters project in partnership with Thames Water. Classes have a tank set up in their classroom and are looking after tiny baby trout known as alevins. Over the coming weeks they will get to see first-hand some of the brown trout's life cycle and learn more about the healthy chalk stream habitat that brown trout depend upon throughout their life.

‘We have taught the teachers and their classes how to care for the trout (a very pollution-sensitive fish) and during the project we go back to run hands-on activities and presentations to educate them about the trout, their local river and the importance of being watersmart. Water is a very precious resource for humans and wildlife and this project is a very enjoyable way for school children to be engaged with this’,said ARK Project Officer Anna Forbes. ARK Trout in School finishes at the end of March when the classes get to visit their local river to release their young trout.
