HUNGERFORD MAY HAVE NEW PLAYPARK

H

ungerford Town Council’s recreation, amenities and war memorials commitee is seeking input from parents and responsible organisations on the possible establishment of a new playpark in Hungerford incorporating facilities for older and younger children.

The committee’s meeting on Tuesday night discussed the possibility of a playpark at the Triangle Field or as an adjunct to the Skate park or elsewhere.

Cr Carolann Farrell said a play area at the Triangle Field could be sited to the left, inside the entrance gate.

It could feature play equipment and tables and benches for parents to picnic and to watch sport.

Cr Helen Simpson said she knew of mothers who had said Hungerford had poor facilities for small children.

Cr Keith Knight said he had recently seen a recreation park with modern exercise equipment that could be Con�nued on page 2

ungerford Town Council’s recreation and amenities committee on Tuesday night discussed placing a CCTV camera in the Hungerford skate park area.

Concerns have been expressed over litter, vandalism and drug use in the area. Police may be asked to help finance a camera.

SUCCESSFUL SEARCH Sir: On Tuesday 6th September, my father-in-law, who is very ill with Parkinson’s-related dementia, went missing from his home in Somerset Close, Hungerford.

After an extensive search by police, both on foot and by helicopter, he was eventually located 4 hours later, in North Standen Road, 2 miles from home, in a ditch by a passer-by walking their dog. We would like to thank this person very much and extend our gratitude also to the police who were absolutely fantastic.

My father-in-law was unscathed, bar a few minor grazes.

president and executives for Hungerford Chamber of Commerce are urgently being sought.

The present president Nigel Perrin told the chamber’s meeting on September 8 that he needed to retire having recently agreed to fill the position temporarily.

However, no one had come forward to take the position. The chamber has been in the forefront of many Hungerford activities but few active businesspeople have been attracted by it.

The role of the chamber appears to be increasingly moving toward Hungerford Town Council.

ction for the River Kennet (ARK) carried out its third annual Big River Litter Pick through Marlborough this week. Regular ARK volunteers were joined by staff from Nationwide, Swindon HQ to clear the river of rubbish from Stonebridge Wild River Reserve to town. In three hours they waded upstream from the reserve and litter picked a whole boat full including a chair, traffic cones and lots of glass bottles and bits of rusty metal.

“Encouragingly there was less than in previous years, but it is still sad to see so much junk end up in our rivers that is potentially dangerous to wildlife and people.”, said ARK Project Officer Anna Forbes

parking. Cllr Hall emphasised that parking is a complex issue, which requires land and finance. It particularly affects low-paid workers who come from outside the town, residents living in houses with no parking and visitors. A working party on parking has held its first meeting.

There will be temporary road closures for the Remembrance Day Parade on Sunday 13th November, 10-11.30 a.m. This will affect the High St, New Road and several of the surrounding roads that lead to the town’s war memorials. Signs will be in place and there will be East-West access via George Lane.

The Town Council has a budget for small grants, which

in 2016-17 is £6,600. The Finance and Policy Committee awarded several grants on Monday night: to The Jubilee Centre, Prospect Hospice and Manton Pre-School. It has already given grants this year to East Wilts Mencap, St John’s Ambulance and Phoenix Brass. Last year the Council did not receive many suitable applications and the full grants budget was not spent. The balance remaining in the grants budget will now be £1,644. There are two more scheduled meetings, in December and March, where councillors will consider further grant applications.

The town council’s surplus funds are currently held in one bank deposit account. Councillors agreed that it would be better to spread the risk and are considering alternatives such as a conservatively managed, AAA rated fund based on cash products and approved by the Local Government Association. - Shirley Pryor
