ust after three in the afternoon of Saturday September 8th, in a packed Library Hungerford Mayor Helen Simpson finished her speech, picked up a knife and – to applause from all around – cut a Very Special Cake.

Most libraries have a policy of silence (or at least quiet), but here there had been the hubbub of many, many people talking all at once as they played the two tombolas there, bought raffle tickets, enjoyed the refreshments on offer, and signed up for the Sponsor a Brick fundraiser.

In fact, it had been so noisy it was hard to hear the beautifullyplayed harp down the far end before the call for silence, and the invitation to listen to what Mayor Simpson had to say.

She started by greeting the audience and thanking the High Sheriff of Berkshire, Graham Barker, and his wife Joanna for their support for so many of Hungerford’s community-led projects.

It was hard to believe, she continued, that it had been two and a half years since five determined residents (of which she’d been one) formed The Friends of Hungerford Library after West (Continued on Page 2)

But in those two and a half years, the Friends had not only ensured that West Berkshire Council funded a library service in the building, but also by becoming a registered charity they could now maximise the building’s full potential.

No longer would the library building be closed, with the lights off and unused for much of the week. Now, she said, the Hub could be a hive of activity, here for all the community, whether to borrow books from the library or to enjoy the range of workshops and events which had already been organised.

Very shortly after that, Mayor Simpson picked up the knife and with one deft cut declared the Hungerford Hub and Library at long last officially ... open.

Back from The Gambia

T

en Marlborough students will be taking the stage at the Town Hall to give a presentation about the time they’ve spent in and around Marlborough’s twin town Gunjur, in the Gambia.

They spent two weeks working alongside local people in a programme organised by the charity Thriving Through Venture which focuses on developing resilience and well-being in young people by involving them in projects both locally in Wiltshire and in Gunjur.

Each of those ten students teamed up with a Gambian partner and together they interviewed and photographed key members of the local community, or else met with local mango farmers and with local and national farming organisations.

Nick Maurice OBE, founding patron of Marlborough Brandt Group said: ““Africa is usually portrayed in the media as a continent in which there is extreme poverty. But in so many countries and communities in that continent one experiences a social wealth that to a large extent we have lost in the West. The Gambia is a case in point. Our ten young people experienced that wealth and happiness as they each worked with a Gambian partner, spent time in their compounds with their families, and enjoyed free time whether swimming together, learning the art of drumming, or meeting leaders of the Gunjur community.”

Change of Hungerford venue for Max Hastings

T

hursday September 20th sees the publication of “Vietnam: An Epic Tragedy, 1945-1975”, by Sir Max Hastings, who will be one of the star attractions at Marlborough’s LitFest when he speaks about the book on September 29th.

If you want to hear Sir Max talk about the record he created about one of the most disastrous wars in human history, from testimonies gathered from warlords, statesmen, bargirls and soldiers, but you can’t make it to Marlborough Town Hall that Saturday, don’t despair - the Hungerford Bookshop is hosting Sir Max the evening before, as part of their Military History Season.

However, there’s been a slight change: because there’s so much interest the venue has been moved from Hungerford’s Croft Hall to the larger auditorium at the Herongate Club in Charnham Park, Hungerford RG17 0YU. Highlights at The Lights Perhaps it’s a bit short notice, but if you’re looking for a spot of, er, light entertainment this Saturday evening (September 15th), you won’t do much better than a trip into Andover to enjoy an evening with swinging sextet The Jive Aces at The Lights.

That’s a quarter of a century of tailoring travel arrangements for individuals or groups, and making sure that they not only have everything they need in the way of documentation, inoculations and everything else travellers require ... but also making sure travellers have the best time possible once they arrive at their destination.

Managing Director Veronica Bailey spent her early life in exotic locations such as Burma, Nigeria and Egypt, since her father was a mining engineer who was sent wherever the company wanted him to go.

Smarten Up Hungerford

Looking for people who want to smarten up the town Many areas of Hungerford were maintained by West Berkshire Council, but that was before the cutbacks. Now those areas look totally neglected and, in short, extremely unattractive.

The Chamber of Commerce want to make the town look as attractive now as it used to look before those cutbacks, and so are looking for people to get involved in making improvements to the way Hungerford looks.

The Hub

Looking for more volunteers to join the team Launched last Saturday September 8th, the Hub is a not-forprofit community asset to ensure the continued provision of a library in Hungerford by West Berkshire Council.

Offering such varied activities as harp lessons, creative workshops, needle felting and regular events organised by the West Berkshire library team, the Hub is for everyone whether they want to stop by the library to borrow a book, to learn how to draw in a monthly workshop, to learn how to speak Spanish – or to enjoy any of the many other leisure interests on offer there.

The volunteer team on the Rose took them for a two and a half hour mini cruise along the canal, while they enjoyed a wonderful buffet spread from the Tutti Pole cafe and a licensed bar.

Member Nigel Perrin gave an interesting talk about “Outside In”, his property maintenance company, and some members even drummed up new business while aboard the Rose.

The Rose is run by volunteers who do a fantastic job, and the Chamber is very grateful for their time and expertise that evening.

The next Chamber meeting will be held at Herongate on Wednesday October 10th, and one member will be giving a talk that evening.

You’re more than welcome to join them and see what they get up to. The Chamber of commerce is involved in many community initiatives which include the Christmas Extravaganza, the Clean Up Hungerford campaign and the 5:30 Club.

ou may have noticed some building work going on behind the Three Swans. It’s a 13-home development and the developer would like to name the street there “The Bevy”.

Googling “Bevy” tells us that it means “a large group of people or things of a particular kind”. On the other hand, just as a collection of swallows is defined as a “gulp” (honest!) you could call a group of swans a “bevy”… or it could be just a play on a more popular and relevant word, as in “bevvy”.

West Berkshire Council have asked Hungerford Council to consider this. They in their turn have put forward such imaginative names as “Railway Court”, “The Nestlings” and “Cobb Court”.

You might have a better name for that street than both Councils, and at least one council would be pleased to hear your suggestion – and that, of course, is Hungerford Town Council, which you can contact at claire.barnes@hungerford-tc.gov.uk.

And while you’ve got your email program open, here’s your chance to send the Town Council your request to find out more about the Hungerford Trade Showcase.

Last year’s event was very successful, and it’s hoped that this year’s event on Thursday October 18th – in the Town Hall – will be even more so.

For a start, the guest list includes the Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire and MP Richard Benyon, The Showcase is a way for employers in Hungerford to show what opportunities they can offer in terms of apprenticeship and employment for potential employees, especially school

leavers – it offers the chance to discover exactly what Hungerford can offer them.

Re-draw the Wiltshire map

T

hings are going to change around Wiltshire – the Local Government Boundary Commission has announced that “it is minded to recommend that the council should have 98 councillors in the future”.

So what does that mean?

It means that the Commission is drawing up a new pattern of divisions around Wiltshire to accommodate those 98 councillors it’s minded to recommend.

And they need your help to tell them where the boundaries of that new pattern of divisions should be drawn.

That’s because those boundaries need to be re-drawn so that each representative would have approximately the same number of voters.

On the Commission’s website you can find a map of Wiltshire as it stands, more information and the facility to submit comments, upload a document, and even draw your own idea of what those boundaries should be – and annotate it.

In short, it’s your chance to re-shape Wiltshire – politically speaking, at least – and you’ve got until November 5th to do so.

New Coaching Teams Boost Hungerford Rugby’s Senior & Colts Teams

H

ungerford RFC start the new season with a new coaching team in place. Last year’s Head Coach Neil Collins is carrying on the good work he started last season and is being supported by club stalwart Simon Ford who has played over 200 games for the club in the last 24 years and has moved into the Senior Coaching Role in addition to his role as coaching the Juniors.

Simon brings with him a vast wealth of experience from his time locking up the Hungerford scrum and being chief line out Neil Collins strategist. Simon says he is looking forward to linking up with Neil and forging a strong team to get the best out of Hungerford’s small squad of players and assist in bringing through the Colts into the Senior Set Up. Neil is looking to evolve the offloading game that the team worked on last year and saw the individual skill levels of the players come on tremendously, particularly during the mid and latter part of last season. Neil is also looking to the young players coming through and developing their skills to ensure they are in a good position to enter Senior Rugby.

Of the coming season, Neil is confident that the promise shown last year can be built upon and welcomes players of all ages to join the club and be part of that success.

Hungerford have entered a Colts’ league for the first time and the side will be a mixture of Colts from last year, players coming up from last year’s under 16’s and new recruits of which there will be plenty of opportunities with a packed fixture list.

The team will be coached by Darren Gale, Steve Allan and Andy Sparkes and managed by Mark Bailey who are all current Senior Players within the club.The coaches will be working closely with the Senior coaches to harness their experience for the benefit of the Colts. We are still looking for more Colts to join the club whether they have previously played at the club, returning to rugby or new to the game.

Training is at The Triangle Field, Hungerford on Wednesdays at 6.30pm for the Colts and 7.15pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the Senior sides.
