4MI – Raising a sweat for charity.

n Wednesday April 18th – just as the weather was starting to warm up – around 40 soldiers from the 4th Military Intelligence Battalion (4MI) were feeling the heat in front of Marlborough’s Town Hall, and wishing the weather had stayed a bit cooler.

They were on their way to completing twelve seriously-gruelling high intensity fitness circuits – in no more than six hours – to raise funds for the Army Benevolent Fund and the Mayor’s chosen charities Julia’s House and Home Start Kennet.

Sgt. Chris Shields, an event organiser, said the Battalion was proud to support the three charities, while Mayor Mervyn Hall said “I’m really grateful to 4MI for fundraising for my charities and the Army Benevolent Fund, a hugely important charity.”

Scout Group seeks admin staff

T

he Savernake Forest Scout Group, based in Burbage, is looking for a chairperson and a secretary to help with the running of the Group and its Scouts, Cubs and Beavers.

Recent Scout activities included an overnight hike from Burbage to Marlborough, with a rest stop in the Marlborough Scout Hut before continuing to the Devil’s Den burial chamber on Fyfield Hill, and from there to Avebury.

Cubs found themselves teaming up with the Beavers not so long ago, for a joint Easter Egg hunt around Burbage involving mapreading, clue-solving and, not surprisingly, chocolate!

Beavers are presently getting ready for this June’s “Beaver Babble” in Pewsey, where – together with a parent or guardian – they’ll meet up with other Beaver colonies, camp out for the night and try all sorts of fun activities.

he Aldbourne Sports and Social Club is once again hosting the Bank Holiday of Music – three nights of free music over the early May Bank Holiday to raise funds for the Prospect Hospice, which serves nearly a third of a million people in the area.

The Hospice costs more than £8 million a year to provide the best possible care – free of charge – to those who need it most.

Less than 30% of the funding comes from statutory organisations like the NHS, so events like the Bank Holiday of Music go towards making up that shortfall.

Adding space with a loft conversion

A

loft conversion is a great way of adding space and most roof spaces can be converted to benefit from this type of cost effective extension. New rooms within the roof can benefit from sunlight for much of the day, make the most of any views, and can have tremendous character.

A conversion can be suitable for almost any residential use, providing you comply with Planning and Building Regulations.

In many cases planning permission is not required, but since the Hungerford district is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) the Local Authority will always require a full set of planning drawings and a planning application (current fee £206.00).

Regardless of whether you require planning approval or not, building regulation approval from Building Control is required, to ensure design and construction standards are achieved.

Royal British Legion Hungerford Club

J

ust a short walk from Hungerford’s town centre, the Royal British Legion Hungerford Club is always happy to offer the warmest of welcomes to members both old and new.

Founded in 1921, the Royal British Legion works tirelessly on behalf of those who have served in the armed forces. This means helping with anything from pension rights to the kind of problems facing young families suddenly coming to terms with the loss of their main breadwinner.

But contrary to popular belief, it’s not necessary to be serving or to have served in the military to join the Royal British Legion Hungerford Club – you just need to be over 18 to apply for full membership, or 14 and over to join as a Youth Member.

Facilities available at the Legion include a well-stocked bar, snooker/ pool, darts, table bowls, skittles and a function room which is always bookable for private functions such as birthday parties, christenings and weddings.

Local organisations such as the Hungerford Bridge Club, Probus,

Hungerford Jazz Forum, Hungerford Blind Club, Tuesday Club, the Rotary Club, the Town Band and the Freemasons regularly use the function room for meetings (for up to 100 people) and other events.

As well as regular fitness sessions like Zumba and Tai Chi, and social evenings such as Games Nights, Bingo and Club Nights, the Club also organises events such as fetes and car boot sales, and – of course – raises funds through the annual Poppy Appeal.

The Club has a large car park, and opening times are from 7:00 – 11:00 pm Monday to Saturday. Fridays start with a Happy Hour from 6:30 – 7:30 pm before closing time at 11:00 pm.

As stated, membership is open to one and all, from the age of 14 upwards. Ladies may wish to join the Hungerford Branch of the Royal British Legion’s Women’s Section, which meets at the Club on the second Monday of each month, at 7:30 pm.

Hungerford on film

I

f you like your horror movies set a little closer to home... or if you’ve got friends who want to know what Hungerford looks like but can’t visit the town in person... or if you just like the idea of an alien invasion making its presence very much known on Hungerford High Street, then you might want to know about a film that’s just appeared on the Netflix listings.

Simply titled “Hungerford”, it’s definitely worth a look for all sorts of reasons, and not just because of the local landmarks: the writer, director, SFX maestro and star was ex-John O’Gaunt pupil Drew Casson, who was just 19 when he made it back in 2014.

It was shot over just 9 days that July, and even though the budget was microscopic it went on to win Best Sci-Fi Horror Feature at the Berlin Independent Film Festival the following year, and shortly afterwards co-star Georgia Bradley was awarded “Best

fter last December’s bad weather meant the cancellation of Hungerford Rotary’s Santa Fun Run, more than fifty of the runners who’d booked their places finally got their chance to dress up in more appropriately-seasonal Easter Bonnets and Bunnies costume (well, some of them did!) and follow the original route.

Many runners were raising money for their favourite charities, and one lady (who wishes to remain anonymous) raised £400.00 which she donated to Cancer Research.

In first place for adults was Alex Milne-White, followed closely

by Olly Frith, aged 10, and in third place was Jodi Strong.

Young People saw Austin Pugh, aged 8, coming in first, followed

by Alex Prestoe, aged 5, in second place.

Coralee Warner and Leah Davis were the Adult Best Costume winner and runner-up respectively, while Stanley Jones won Young Person Best Costume.

Hungerford Chamber gets rid of horrors!

A

t Tuesday’s meeting of the Hungerford Chamber of Commerce the meeting decided to launch a volunteer scheme to help clean up and decorate the town centre.

David Small, the Chamber’s new Chairman, introduced John Willmott of Eliane Cafe, who felt that for years the Authorities have been ignoring their responsibilities and have not been maintaining their assets as they should be – apparently a lack of funds!

John said that other local towns had fantastic floral arrangements but Hungerford had none, and he showed photos of dangerous pavements, broken bollards, unpainted bollards and street lights, hedges, trees and planting not trimmed, weeds everywhere, filthy and broken signage, debris in the roads, almost vanished line markings, etc.

He also proposed an Italian style Piazza for outside the town hall and a big new welcome sign opposite the Co-Op garage. To start the ball rolling several members agreed to contribute to fund a new sign and hoped that others would follow suit.

To conclude, John said that he felt that the condition of these wasting and unloved assets were an absolute disgrace and urged everyone to join a volunteer force to brighten our town centre and attract more visitors.

New horizons for JOG journalism club

T

hree Hungerford students have so loved their journalism club at their school that they are now pursuing careers in the industry.

Seated L-R are Ciaran Morrison, Alex Nutley and Abigail Cook, all aged 16 and part of John O’Gaunt’s Journalism Club. They’ve been trained by journalists and editors over the past few years and are themselves training Year 7 and 8 students like Enzo Scarlett (standing) now following in their footsteps to become student journalists themselves.

Ciaran wants to be a football journalist (you’ll have seen his match reports in the Adviser), Alex a photographer and Abigail a travel reporter working across the world. This summer they will head for excellent A Level colleges.

JOG is a high-achieving, high ambition school that has lots of creative clubs including journalism, reading, writing and most aspects of literature.

Principal Alan Henderson said: “These students have been exceptional in their attitude, creativity and enthusiasm. There is no doubt that they will go far in their careers.”

Marlborough rugby news Windsor v Marlborough at Windsor RFC, Saturday 28th April, KO:3pm fter their best season ever in Southern Counties South, Marlborough finished as league runners up and will playoff against Windsor, runners up in Southern Counties North this Saturday, 28th April.

The winners will then get promotion to level 6 league, South West 1 East.

The game will be at Windsor RFC due to their slightly better playing record. The fixture will be the biggest game in the club’s history and shows the talent and potential of the club, plus the progress that has been made under head coach, Elisi Vunipola.

by Marcus Beauchamp. The referee made a controversial decision 40 minutes in, when a nicely weighted ball through to Nicholas Bignall was pulled back for a foul to Hungerford, leaving the hosts puzzled as to why an advantage wasn’t played.

An early free kick for the Crusaders in the second half nearly paid dividends when Alfie Kilgour headed wide. The visitors forced a great save from Beauchamp with 20 minutes to go, when a cross floated over to substitute Sam Chaney who volleyed ferociously low to the near post. Hungerford should have made it one-nil when a nice move ended in Richie Whittingham shooting low, forcing the first save out of Dan Wilks. Bignall had another big chance for the hosts when he turned nicely in the penalty box but fired over. Beauchamp was then forced into action again, saving low to his near post from Ky MarshBrown. Then with just four minutes to go, Chaney ran through on goal and slotted past the goalkeeper to give the visitors the lead. They should have made it two in injury time, when a three on one break ended in a Benyon shot being saved again.
