ultiple packaging arrays addressed by single, fully integrated packaging solution Architecture flexibility and innovative machine design conquer real-estate and packaging variety challenges at leading US food company. Modern secondary packaging solutions have to deliver maximum flexibility and agility, or end users will simply not be able to keep pace with contemporary consumer and market demands. Different products require different packaging arrays. Promotions need different-sized cartons, supermarkets want multiple flavours in one box and consumers want individual packs; but companies cannot afford to buy individual machines for individual demands, they need secondary packaging technology that adapts to their needs, which is why they call upon the Cama Group. In a recent application, Cama was approached by a leading multibrand Fortune 500 company to develop a packaging strategy for one of its popular regionally inspired food brands. The brand’s products are primarily sold in pillow bags, which need to be inserted into individual cartons, which are then packaged in arrays of six, eight or

twelve (two size variants) into cases. In addition to this carton-count variety, one packaging format calls for 12 pillow bags to be packed without cartons straight into a case. The customer already had a number of Cama machines in its packaging portfolio, which although advantageous, did not mean that the team at Cama took this project for granted. “Even though this company was an existing customer, we always treat any tender and sales process as a brand-new opportunity and do our very best to wow the customer with our technology and capabilities,” explains Davide Di Lorenzo, Sales Engineer at Cama. “A major part of our success recently is the way we demonstrate our commitment to perfection so early in the process,” he explains. “By developing and simulating fully functional pre-designed 3D models of the proposed solutions, we can provide prospective customers with the means to calculate real-estate demands, utility availability & routing, conflicts with other assets or flows and general shopfloor integration.” Not only does this approach foster greater peace of mind much earlier in the process, but it also has a positive impact on lead times, as more issues that would be missed in any other more basic simulation process, can be designed out or circumvented before any build has even commenced. Cama’s answer to the needs of this project was a fully integrated two-stage secondary packaging line, comprising a CL169 side-load cartoning machine and an FW748 wrap around case packer. Working in tandem the two machines are capable of fulfilling all of the required packaging arrays (and more if required). The non-cartoned

multipack pillow bags utilise a clever bypass architecture that is contained within the envelope of the cartoning machine. Not only does this approach deliver the required flexibility, but it also has minimal impact on factory real estate compared to other concepts that either require a separate feed conveyor direct to the case packer, or a bypass conveyor that sits alongside – rather than within – the existing machine. Cama’s CL169 Electronic continuousmotion cartoning machines are ideal for packing flow-wraps, pouches, bags, thermoformed trays, blisters and jars. The machines can be combined with different loading apparatuses according to different product characteristics and production requirements. Carton closing is achieved using hot-melt or tuck-in. The FW748 electronic wrap-around case packers are designed to package bags, boxes, cups, flow-wraps and rigid containers into wraparound cases. By utilising different loading systems, products can be positioned into the case flat, on edge or standing up on one or multiple layers. Depending upon project specifications, the machine can also run trays, economy flap cases or hinged lid cases. In this instance to aid with rigidity, the

cases packed with pouches also incorporate a specially inserted carton divider between the rows. Both machines are part of Cama’s Breakthrough Generation (BTG), incorporating many design features and innovations that have set the standards in the market. The BTG solution comprises modular, scalable and hygienically designed frameworks, and control architectures that exploit the capabilities of contemporary automation solutions – including advanced rotary and linear servo technology – which can be tightly coupled to in-house-developed robotics. This electromechanical architecture delivers the all-important flexibility and adaptability required by modern packaging operations. This digital platform also supports full Industry 4.0 capabilities, including AR, VR and virtual testing, training and operation. Cama already has mature AR capabilities, which have been exploited over the past 18 months in multiple projects at every stage, from sales, through design and installation and onto operation. Cam is now taking this s tape further by using AR to help companies with maintenance and spares/replacement parts defined by warranty agreements.

Cama Group

Users are presented with unambiguous 3D information and overlays that describe parts that need replacing based on total run time. Once the part and quantity are confirmed, a button press generates a ticket, which instigates contact from the Cama service team. “These two machines can also be equipped fast RFID-based changeover solutions which help keep downtime to an absolute minimum,” Di Lorenzo explains. “Using this RFID approach, the cartoner can be reconfigured in as little as eight minutes and the case packer in 15. Motorised system will reduce this even further.” “It is our commitment to quality and flexibility that ensures that existing customers keep coming back to Cama; while new customer approach us on a daily basis,” Di Lorenzo concludes. “We have to listen to the market and give them what they need. We can’t force them to choose a best-fit solution from a limited portfolio, which is why we have such a broad range of packaging technologies. Our breadth and depth of market coverage also means we have excellent crossmarket technology transfer and can adapt all of our solutions to the most demanding applications.”

hilled water cooling – is it the right system for you?

With more than 70 years of innovation and a strong presence on international markets, FIC is the perfect partner when ice water is used in a cooling process. Water is considered the safest cooling media in the food industry and the possibility to take advantage of its PCM properties (phase-

changing material), makes it more convenient than ever, especially with rising energy bills.

FIC can offer a complete range of ice banks, from small compact sizes to container size.

FIC ice banks With FIC ice banks you can reduce your peak power load. Because ice is built up overnight, you may be able to take advantage of offpeak power rates. The advantage is even bigger if you consider it vital to have a cold energy reservoir during blackout times. FIC offers a complete range from 45 kWh to 2500 kWh. All FIC equipment is carefully tested with different methods to guarantee extended functionality and the customers’ success.

FIC falling film chillers For mega farms, dairies, industrial bakeries and large plants running 24/7, FIC can supply ice water solutions for instant cooling down to 0.5°C. This technology is widely used in some of the most innovative dairies, thanks to its consistency and scalability. This system is very compact and can be adopted when the available space is limited. In this case, FIC can propose a fully customized range of falling film chillers. The number of plates and modules can be increased according to the customers demand, to meet actual and future flexibility requirements.

Falling film and ice banks can be integrated to maximize the benefits of both technologies

MF Roasters: innovation and sustainability in coffee roasting

The coffee industry, its market and the entire supply chain have recently taken significant steps towards sustainability, recognising the need to reduce their environmental impact. The process most affected by this dynamic is roasting, a fundamental step in the production of roasted coffee. In fact, an increasingly larger number of undertakings, even small ones, turn to roasting to make themselves autonomous in the process, as the advantages of quality assurance far outweigh the initial investments. IMF is particularly attentive to intercepting the needs of both small roasters, in need of “entry level” solutions, and large industrial groups, always guaranteeing highquality and sustainable solutions that are, at the same time, technologically advanced. Active since1994, the company led by CEO Alessandro Garbin is highly specialised in the design, construction and installation of industrial systems with a focus on providing consultancy and know-how for the development of new production units and the integration of existing installations. The specificity of the Occhiobello-based company’s technology lies in the hot-air roasting method, which guarantees great control, consistency and precision of the roasting process, aided by the integrated cooling system which ensures low emission levels, in line with world reference limits. IMF roasters in fact use a single combustion chamber, positioned separately from the machine, which has a twin function: to heat

successful projects, one vision: Continuous innovation ME Food Solutions is a registered trademark of Millennium Engineering Srl, a company founded in Padua by Engineer Luca Priore, that designs and manufactures plants for the different stages of food processing: freezing, cooling, leavening, pasteurizing, conveying, etc. More than 25 years of applied research make ME Food Solutions a highly reliable company that has made continuous innovation a fundamental and essential principle. In fact, the company vision aims at a constant evolution of the technologies developed to meet the everincreasing demands coming from customers. The results of this philosophy have materialized over time in the acquisition of prestigious orders nationally and internationally. In this issue we illustrate three important projects, united by very detailed preliminary research, which led to the creation of state-of-theart plants in terms of reliability, safety, and compliance with food hygiene regulations. For the multinational company DON DON d.o.o. (production of bread, landbrot, rundbrot, somun, pogache), ME Food Solutions built a plant consisting of 4 cooling spirals and 4 freezing spirals with the following features:

• For each production line was installed a freezing system with sequential hot gas defrost of air-coolers • Total capacity of 4 production lines is 4,2 tons per hour • New freezing system using CO2 which is ecologically clean and economical • Freezing capacity for 8 spirals: 980 kW • Final freezing temperature in the centre of the product: -7°C For Trgocentar (production of pie “Burek”) ME food Solutions installed 1 freezing spiral with the following features: • Freezing operating temperatures is –40°C • Freezing capacity is 140 KW • Production of 10,000 of pies (900kg) per hour • Full freeze time: 35 minutes.

For Forno d’Asolo Group (production of croissant), ME Food Solutions built a plant consisting of 1 freezing spiral with the following features: • Production of 10,000 croissant per hour • Freezing system with sequential hot gas defrost of air-coolers • Freezing capacity: 160 kW • Final freezing temperature in the centre of the product: -18°C • New freezing system using CO2 which allowed to reduce operational costs. Solutions’ team of technicians. Some of the most relevant features are: 1) The spiral is composed of a belt that runs on a profile with a reduced coefficient of friction, to allow a flowing movement. 2) The towing system has a gear on each level, which pulls the belt, and a motor that pulls the main shaft. 3) The belt is made of AISI304 ø 6mm bars, electro-welded on a special high-strength AISI304 chain on which AISI304 teeth are applied. 4) The toothed wheels made with special high flowing polymers, perfectly match the chain allowing for smooth sliding. These features allow the functioning of towers of medium or large heights without the use of excessive force and energy even in the case of several towers or more complex solutions. The simplicity of the spiral leads to low energy consumption and little maintenance compared to the standards currently on the market. Each of the three lines described here is characterized by technology that does not require the use of lubricants, and this is of crucial importance in view of the philosophy of hygiene that has always been adopted by ME Food Solutions. Indeed, attention to food quality, both in production and

ASIATIC EDITION

Millennium Engineering Srl

transportation, has taken on very high levels in order to guarantee the health of the end consumer, and oil-free technology becomes absolutely necessary. As far as plant realization, ME Food Solutions has chosen to carry out a preliminary assembly and testing phase directly at its headquarters in San Martino di Lupari. In this way, the client can monitor each phase of the evolution of the order and the progress, day by day, of the entire work. In this phase, very fruitful is certainly the continuous

interchange between technical designers and testers who, both during testing and assembly phase, are able to detect potential criticalities, indicating to the designers the most suitable solutions to overcome them. The preliminary testing phase also allows the system to be installed by the end customer without wasting time. Production activities can then begin without delays and related economic losses. Continuous innovation, research and development are fundamental activities that have enabled the design of increasingly highperformance, reliable, and long-lasting plants. Thanks to this modus operandi, the company over the years has expanded its activities on five continents, becoming a leading and recognized international player in the food processing sector.

or 80 years, MTH has been a leading company in industrial and commercial refrigeration, with a strong international presence. Its wide product range includes doors and related components, refrigeration systems and complete mini cold rooms, with tailor-made solutions that meet the needs of customers in sectors such as HO.RE.CA., supermarkets, food production and preservation, and medical. The range of cold-storage doors includes hinged, sliding and semiinsulating doors, which are mainly used in supermarkets, meat and fish processing plants, dairies, fruit and vegetable storage facilities, warehouses and the ice cream industry. Hinged doors are characterized by a blade thickness ranging from 68 to 151 mm that guarantees a thermal seal for both positive and negative temperatures down to -45°C and are equipped with a handle manufactured in-house by MTH and certified to EN179:2008. The sliding doors, complete with frame and patented sliding system, also guarantee a thermal seal for both positive and negative temperatures down to -45C°, and can also be fitted with optional elements such as automation and guide rail passage. In the absence of the space required for the installation of a standard sliding door, MTH proposes a vertical sliding door for both positive and negative temperature applications. This type of door is equipped with EN13241-1 certified anti-fall systems and can be manufactured with 3 different blade thicknesses (92, 121 and 151 mm). In addition to cold-storage doors, MTH offers a wide range of more than 800 components and accessories that include handles,

hinges, sliding systems, PVC and aluminum profiles, seals, portholes and automations, and are used both in MTH’s finished products and by manufacturers all over the world. The constant focus on innovation has resulted in several patents on components and accessories such as the Mirror sliding system and the through-lever handle for sliding doors. Furthermore, most components are manufactured inhouse by MTH thanks to dedicated extrusion and moulding lines, in order to guarantee high quality standards ‘Made in Italy’ and the control over the entire production process, from design and production to the assembly of the doors. To further strengthen its leadership position in the cold-storage doors compartment, MTH has finalized the acquisition of Foris index, a leading Italian company in the production of doors for industrial cold rooms, particularly with controlled atmosphere applications. This is an operation of strategic importance because it allows to exploit the industrial and production synergies between MTH and Foris Index, to expand the portfolio with new products, and to leverage new talents, resources and know-how, enabling the Group to consolidate its presence in new markets. The operation is part of a development plan that aims to build an Italian champion capable of competing with the major players in the sector at an international level, also thanks to future aggregations of realities of excellence in Italy, and to meet increasingly higher quality and sustainability standards. Furthermore, to better serve the Chinese market, MTH has recently inaugurated a new plant in Qingdao, with 3,500 sqm dedicated to the production of refrigeration doors with state-of-the-art machinery. The new plant allows MTH to increase its production capacity, maintain the highest quality and expand its commercial, industrial and logistics customers in the Chinese and Hong Kong area.

be completed with robot counting and feeding systems, cartoning machines, customized with a large variety of optionals and finishing on the base of customer specifications. Innovation and Industry 4.0 From a technological point of view, in recent years we have focused on issues related to the opportunities offered by industry 4.0 and energy saving. In fact, all our models are now offered in a fully electronic version, guaranteeing flexibility and energy saving. As far as industry 4.0 technologies are concerned, we use a series of software implemented on our packaging machines to comply with regulations in terms of traceability, safety, quality and interconnection with company information systems. In addition, thanks to remote control, our customers can request additional services that allow us to monitor and interact with packaging machines installed worldwide with real-time access to a series of functional data to diagnose their status and provide targeted assistance in case of anomalies. After sales services With the aim of ensuring increasingly timely service, we are developing artificial intelligence algorithms for predictive maintenance, i.e. the prevention of potential faults before they occur in order to avoid unexpected production downtime. We have also integrated augmented reality systems so that the customer, by framing the packaging machine with a smart device, can have immediate access to a series of data, user and maintenance manuals and analyze the

status of the machine in complete autonomy. Customer centricity: Omag as a reliable all-around partner An important novelty concerns secondary packaging: we used to supply complete lines by working with partners, while now, thanks to continuous investment in research and development and favorable tests on different prototypes, Omag is finally able to offer a complete 360° solution, from primary to secondary packaging. We want to be a reliable partner for the customer, able to offer a complete, easyto-use and intelligent solution that allows monitoring all parameters and intervening even remotely - to solve any anomalies. uture-proof foodtech industry Transforming food in an intelligent and sustainable way. Francesco Pellacini, owner of Pellacini Engineering, talks about it It all started with the goal of enhancing and maintaining the taste of tomato, one of the symbols of both Made in Italy excellence and the Parma region. Since that moment, and it was 1896 when the company was founded, the synergy between industry and agriculture has become increasingly stronger and Pellacini Engineering - company specialising in the design and manufacture of fruit and tomato processing plants - has been the main player in innovation with numerous industrial patents and its expansion towards foreign countries. Pellacini Engineering has experienced food processing sector’s all growth phases and thanks to its international experience it can satisfy a market increasingly focused on productivity, safety and environmental sustainability. “What peculiarities and operating philosophy characterise you?” Our peculiarity is imbuing our present with the remarkable wealth of knowledge we have gained in more than a century, and adopting a production method that is in line with requirements, such as costeffectiveness and technical efficaciousness the today’s market wants. We design solutions based on customers’ precise requirements, and, free from our own production constraints, we choose the most suitable workshops for each project and manage production, directly controlling each stage to ensure the best value for money. “In a global context where it is increasingly difficult to differentiate yourself, how have you made a difference? It is well-known that the Pellacini brand is a strong point...” Our history began in 1896 with our first workshop entirely dedicated to tomato processing, given our position in the Parma district. In 1925 we achieved the first patent: “Mescolatrice Sistema Reviati” is the first prototype of what would become today’s continuous pasteurizer. Among our records we can mention our being one of the few in Italy to experiment an aseptic filling system in pre-sterilised bags, complying with the strict international standards. The Pellacini brand is renowned all over the world. In the market for several generations, it has created a network of clients in both strategic countries and markets where it has presented itself as a first mover. Its diversification has guaranteed territorial capillarity and excellent brand reputation. Interest and trust have

always been growing, and clients usually associate Pellacini with a highly competitive quality-price ratio. Today more than ever, with the assertion of sustainability and energy efficiency principles, a space is opening for the evolution of production processes for food sector in particular. To this precise direction Pellacini addresses most its research, as evidenced by some consolidated projects that aim to optimise resources, in terms of energy and raw materials, for example by creating plants for recovering production waste up to 95%. “What is Pellacini Engineering’s commercial strategy and target?” Pellacini commercial strategy has always pivoted on its excellent reputation, acquired and cemented in over 125 years of history. Our historic customers’ good feedback enabled us to acquire new customers, while historic ones were consolidated thanks to our prompt and efficient after-sales and spare parts service. Competition, new implemented technologies and new production model were requiring target and, especially, continuous action to generate contacts. This premise paved the way for a fruitful cooperation with a consultancy company specializing in internationalization, with the goal of constant growth and organic control of the markets where Pellacini Engineering operates. This led to a fruitful collaboration with a consultancy company specialising in internationalisation, with the aim of constant growth and an organic control of the markets where Pellacini Engineering operates.

P

ND presents to the world its new cutter for cherry tomatoes Founded in 2000, PND is one of the leading companies in the manufacturing of fruit processing machinery. A business mainly related to exports, which is worth 95% of the total turnover. PND operates on a global scale and is strongly present in Europe, South America, the United States, Asia, Australia and Africa. There are 19 machines in the catalogue that are easy to intuit, use and maintain. Among the top products there are peeling machines, coring machines, automatic and manual cutters, for multiple fruit varieties, as well as treatment and pre-washing tanks. Strawberry, apple, pear, kiwi, melon, pineapple, mango, peach, lemon, watermelon, citrus; each fruit has different intrinsic and external characteristics and responds to different market needs. The PND brand machines are modular, therefore they lend themselves to the construction of a tailor-made process line for the customer. It is in fact possible, through targeted requests, to combine a machine suitable for cutting into wedges and chunks with a peeler. Since September, a new machine has been added to the catalogue, the PND new cherry tomato cutter, designed for cutting in half and in quarters. Fast, with a production capacity of about 200 kgs per hour; safe since it is designed to comply with all the safety standards required by current regulations, for example with the covered cutting unit; innovative because of its automatic loading, thus also saving manpower. The product is, in fact, collected in a hopper and, through an elevator conveyor, lift to the loading belt that aligns and transfers it to the cutting station. The cutting unit is composed of 4 rotating circular blades that, operated together, allow the cut into quarters. A mechanical lever system allows, instead, to move 2 blades so as to obtain the cut in half. Finally, an output conveyor, placed under the cutting station, collects the product easily. Thanks to its innovative stainless-steel design, the machine treats cherry tomatoes of different calibre (Ø 25 - 40 mm) and is easy to handle being equipped with four wheels. The company strength? Listening to the customer. PND is able to give a prompt response to the buyers, with processing lines designed according to their needs and requirements. A vision enabling to pay attention to technological performance, perfectly tailored to the needs of those who choose them.

It is a truly global machine, as PND Srl is also truly global, being based in Italy, but with representative offices located in several different countries. A team consisting of 40 employees, including administrative and sales staff, technicians and engineers, based at its headquarters in Scafati, in the South of Italy, works alongside agents and technical offices all around the world. Indeed, the human element is one of the main resources of a company with mechanical and technical strengths such as these. Despite the widespread presence of PND representatives on the various continents, when it comes to installing a new machine, there is always an expert who travels from the parent company and follows the process through to completion. This assumption of responsibility is a guarantee for the customer, which knows from the very first moment that it is going to be accompanied constantly from the design phase to the commissioning of the system. This constant attention to the needs of its customers is a winning strategy that allows continuous updating in the field and a swift response to customer needs means that customised production lines can be offered to them. The opportunity to deal constantly with customers all around the world offers the technicians from PND the opportunity to tackle new challenges and properly understand the needs of their customers.

of Re Pietro Srl is setting new standards in cereal cakes and snacks production, by offering one solution that will revolutionise and simplify the manufacturing of these products. In fact, once the mould has been chosen and installed, the popping machine RP-EVO transforms the cereals and/or the micro-pellets into fragrant cakes or crunchy snacks. Its efficiency and flexibility allow to have a wider range of products, using one press only. Nowadays these products not only are appreciated as healthy alternatives to conventional bread, but they are also valued for their versatility by professionals and consumers: they are perfect as carbs supply during meals, as crunchy snacks for a quick bite or as fancy decorations to dishes and desserts. You may wonder how many moulds and which shapes can allow you to produce both cakes and snacks with our new press. Round big and small, round with ridges, triangular or square, hexagonal and rectangular just to name a few. But we can also produce customised moulds based on the customers’ requests. Popping machine RP-EVO – FOCUS ON Structure in nickel coated steel, certified food contact material, electric panel in stainless-steel with a side rotating and swivelling touch screen control panel set at eye’s level for easier use. Equipped with a hydraulic system that produces the high pressure needed for the expansion of the cereals or micropellets turning them into fragrant cakes or crispy snacks. The volumetric dosing is carried out by a pneumatically operated feeding plate. The moulds which shape the popped cakes and snacks are made by hardened steel coated with titanium nitride, to guarantee solidity and a longlasting life, and to prevent the sticking

of the products on the moulds. The moulds, as well as all the parts that get in touch with the products, comply with the MOCA specification for food processing machines as per Reg. No.1935/2004 CE (MOCA compliance). The upper and lower moulds are heated by cartridge heaters separately controlled by thermoregulators. Each press has got its own PLC (Siemens S7-1200) and 7” control panel. From the HMI it is possible to set up each production phase, to save the recipes and check any malfunctioning thanks to its efficient diagnostic system. Popping machine RPEVO is another milestone in the production of Re Pietro Srl, where the manufacturing of food processing machines and plants has always been approached with an eye to innovation and development, relying on 90 years of solid experience. In fact, the company, surrounded by paddy fields in the southern outskirts of Milan, celebrates this year the 90th anniversary of the great intuition of its founder Mr. Carlo Re, who saw the potential of rice and its processing. Without forgetting the incredible added value of the Made in Italy quality.

.matik: Modern style and cutting-edge technology Z.matik has forty years of experience in the production of machines for bakeries and pastry shops, in particular of manual dough sheeters, croissant groups, work tables, planetary machines and cutting rollers in Aisi 304 steel. From this year the company began a real revolution, but always maintaining tradition. It starts with the manual table top and floor standing sheeters that are much more compact and ergonomic. The modern style and cutting-edge materials are captivating even the most demanding customers. The mechanics maintains some key points, but is also renewed, allowing the customer less maintenance and greater resistance. The goal is to make this range even more solid and intuitive, thus facilitating the operator especially in routine cleaning. The new dough sheeter is good for multiple applications: from pastry shops to hotels, catering, etc. The existing options have been made even more advanced, for example the thickness detector, which allows you to calibrate the lowering of the calibrating cylinders to exactly check the thickness of the dough. Now this accessory counts a lot of digital display larger, in color and very accurate in reading. Z.matik is certified according to the TÜV SÜD - ISO 9001 quality system and complies with all standards for food contact.
