MONEY TALK

QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FALL EDITION

Message From Our President

By now, you have heard the news about the National Public Data breach, which exposed 2.9 billion personal records.1 Sadly, these headlines are seen all too frequently. Protecting your financial data and money is Triangle Credit Union’s top priority. While we remain vigilant in our fight against fraud, we have seen increased attempts from fraudsters to trick our members into providing their account information.

Most recently, fraudsters have called or texted members, posing as employees from the TCU Fraud Department with an incoming phone number that looks like Triangle’s local number. Once the conversation starts, the fraudsters request confidential online banking information and passcodes.

Triangle has implemented tools, such as multi-factor authentication (MFA) on your online banking platforms, alerts through email, website, and online banking, and identity protection with Better Checking to circumvent fraudulent activities—all of which are designed to give you more control over your security.

As part of our ongoing effort, I am pleased to announce new enhancements with our Better Checking product that provides identity and fraud protection with ID Protect™.

Effective November 1, 2024, Better Checking will include:

• Automatic registration for identity protection

• New credit score tracker

• Dedicated app for easier access to activity and notifications

• Increased cell phone protection up to $400

If you are already a Better Checking account holder, information will be coming to you soon about these benefits, so stay tuned. If you have not yet opted into Better Checking, there has never been a more relevant time to switch to protect yourself and your loved ones.

For more information on protecting yourself and your money, I encourage you to visit triangleuniversity.org/blog/fraud.

Thank you,

A. Scott MacKnight

Two Important Tips To Safeguard Your

Information

Safeguarding your personal information, whether financial, medical, or otherwise, is critical in the fight against identity protection and fraud. The following is an excerpt from IT and Fraud Security Experts, KnowB4Security:

Shred, Shred, Shred

Someone may hand you documents, or you may print out a file or email containing sensitive information. Make sure that when you are done with it, that you shred-shredshred these files instead of just placing them in the trash. Attackers will go through the trash and dumpsters to obtain these sensitive documents.

Tidy up

Take a look around your desk... how many documents do you have out and available for someone to grab, or view? Be sure to keep a tidy workplace at home or at work: put files away in locked drawers when not in use. Would you leave the keys to your house outside the front door at night or inside, locked away?

These two simple steps are easy to implement and may save time and money when protecting your identity.

Your Retirement Income Plan

Social Security will be an important part of your retirement income.

• Income from your assets and retirement plans will also contribute to your retirement “paycheck”.

• It’s important to help limit downside risk in your portfolio.

An ITM is essentially banking in a box.

One of the most convenient features of an Interactive Teller Machine (ITM) is the ability to call for assistance from a live teller. Not a machine or artificial intelligence, the teller is a real person who is ready to help you with all your banking needs. This feature is available during business hours, so you can access a live teller with video chat to help you through your transaction or answer any questions about your accounts.

That’s not all ITMs can do. Like an ATM, ITMs let you deposit and withdraw cash, check account balances, and transfer money. You can also make

loan or credit card payments and cash checks at an ITM, which you can’t do at an ATM. Today, more and more people are doing their banking while on the go. This is where ITMs fit in for those of us living a busy lifestyle. If you’re in a rush, ITMs can sometimes be a quicker alternative to waiting in line at the credit union. If there’s a long line to get to the tellers, just look for the ITM and do your transactions there. Many financial institutions also offer drive-up ITMs, which allows you to use the ITM from the comfort of your vehicle.

With all these features, the ITM truly is banking in a box. An ITM allows you to bank your way, offering the perfect blend of self-service banking and in-person assistance.

Visit trianglecu.org/about-us/hours-locations for the nearest ITM and try one out for yourself!
