Esta pasión por la visión desde el aire fue compartida por un buen número de fotógrafos y arquitectos modernos en América Latina. Tuve la oportunidad de adquirir mi propia avioneta, así que con el placer de volar mi avión, tomaba las fotos del sector, las revelaba y ampliaba, para poder discutir en la próxima reunión con material actualizado. This passion for vision from the air was shared by a good number of modern photographers and architects in Latin America. Some were also aviators, among them Tomás José Sanabria. In 2008 he referred to the importance of aerial photography in his work: "I have always liked aviation and I was a pilot for about 30 years. I had the opportunity to buy ġű ĩūĢ ÁäŅĩłěÁĢä͡ ʼnĩ ūĆőĂ őĂä łěäÁʼnŖŅä ĩù ƈűĆĢú ġű łěÁĢä͡ H took photos of the sector, processed and enlarged them, so that H ÚĩŖěà àĆʼnÚŖʼnʼn Áő őĂä ĢäŰő ġääőĆĢú ūĆőĂ ŖłàÁőäà ġÁőäŅĆÁě͠ ƋĆʼn convinced me of the value of photography and so I began the collection of aerial slides over the Valley of Caracas and its surroundings”.

Almost every morning, Sanabria piloted his plane to look at and photograph the city and its surroundings.

He recorded it minutely from the device he had placed outside the window to fasten the camera. He drew it and made notes of his observations on the urban fabric and the geography of the site in an exhaustive way. He was

Durante años, Sanabria tomó la mayoría de las miles de fotos de su obra que se encuentran cuidadosamente guardadas en su archivo. Lo hizo no solo como un medio para dar a conoÚäŅ äě äàĆƈÚĆĩ őäŅġĆĢÁàĩ ʼnĆĢĩ͡ ʼnĩÙŅä őĩàĩ͡ Úĩġĩ łÁŅőä äʼnäĢcial del proceso de desarrollo del proyecto. La comprensión amplia y completa del lugar le permitió entender cada encargo como parte de un proyecto global de desarrollo y moàäŅĢĆŹÁÚĆĪĢ͡ äʼnőÁ ŪĆʼnĆĪĢ őÁġÙĆåĢ ʼnä ŅäƉäĔÁ äĢ ěÁʼn ŪÁŅĆÁʼn őäʼnĆʼn que propuso para la ciudad de Caraca s. En cada proyecto sobrevoló el sitio para registrarlo con vistas aéreas desde todos los ángulos. Mediante este recurso decidía cómo la obra debía reconocer y potenciar sus valores. These studies are ŅäƉäÚőäà ĆĢ őĂä ĆġłĩŅőÁĢÚä őĂÁő Ăä ÁőőŅĆÙŖőäʼn őĩ ĆĢʼnĩěÁőĆĩĢ in all his buildings and translated in the careful design of the architectural devices to control solar incidence and temperature that are characteristic of its work. The äĢŪĆŅĩĢġäĢőÁěěű ŅäʼnłĩĢʼnĆÙěä ÁĢà äƆÚĆäĢő ʼnĩěŖőĆĩĢʼn őĂÁő ġĩàäŅĢ ÁŅÚĂĆőäÚőʼn łŅĩàŖÚäà ġĩŅä őĂÁĢ ƈŪä àäÚÁàäʼn Áúĩ are a great lesson for today's architecture, so concerned about climate change and sustainability.

For years, Sanabria took most of the thousands of photos of his work that are carefully kept in his archive. He did so Ģĩő ĩĢěű Áʼn Á ġäÁĢʼn ĩù łŖÙěĆÚĆʼnĆĢú őĂä ƈĢĆʼnĂäà ÙŖĆěàĆĢú ÙŖő͡ ÁÙĩŪä Áěě͡ Áʼn ÁĢ äʼnʼnäĢőĆÁě łÁŅő ĩù őĂä łŅĩĔäÚőΔʼn àäŪälopment process. The comprehensive understanding of the site allowed him to understand each assignment as łÁŅő ĩù Á úěĩÙÁě łŅĩĔäÚő ĩù àäŪäěĩłġäĢő ÁĢà ġĩàäŅĢĆʼnÁőĆĩĢ͠ ĂĆʼn ŪĆʼnĆĩĢ Ćʼn Áěʼnĩ ŅäƉäÚőäà ĆĢ őĂä ŪÁŅĆĩŖʼn őĂäʼnĆʼn Ăä łŅĩłĩʼnäà ùĩŅ őĂä ÚĆőű ĩù ÁŅÁÚÁʼn͠ HĢ äÁÚĂ łŅĩĔäÚő͡ Ăä Ɖäū over the site to register it with aerial views from all angles. Through this resource, he decided how the proposal should recognise and enhance its values. Gradually, he approached it to consider every scale. From the street and neighbouring buildings, he took full views to observe the relations with the immediate surroundings. In photos accompanied by index cards with drawings and comments, he recorded the construction. He zoomed in to examine the relationships between the various elements that shape the building in each of its spaces. Para observar el rol de la fotografía como uno de los principales instrumentos en el desarrollo del proyecto para Tomás José Sanabria, se han seleccionado tres obras de difeŅäĢőäʼn ÚÁŅÁÚőäŅĈʼnőĆÚÁʼn͠ ZÁʼn àĩʼn łŅĆġäŅÁʼn͡ äě äàĆƈÚĆĩ ʼnäàä àäě First National City Bank (actualmente Ministerio del Poder Popular para la Economía, Finanzas y Banca Pública) y el ÚĩĢĔŖĢőĩ àäě ÁĢÚĩ äĢőŅÁě àä ¨äĢäŹŖäěÁ͡ äʼnőÂĢ ʼnĆőŖÁàÁʼn en manzanas contiguas en el centro de la ciudad de Caracas. La tercera, la Fábrica de Alimentos Heinz, está ubicada en un entorno natural en los valles de San Joaquín, Estado Carabobo. La sede del First National City Bank está ubicada en la Avenida Norte 4 a pocos metros hacia el norte de la Avenida Urdaneta, una de las principales de la ciudad. La Avenida Urdaneta está a dos manzanas al norte de la Plaza Bolívar -plaza fundacional de la ciudad- y es el resultado de las demoliciones y ensanches que se llevaron a cabo en ěĩʼn ÁĨĩʼn ÚĆĢÚŖäĢőÁ͠ ;Ŗä ĆĢÁŖúŖŅÁàÁ Á ƈĢÁěäʼn àä ̧̡̟̣͡ łĩÚĩ antes del encargo. En el entorno se encuentran varias äàĆƈÚÁÚĆĩĢäʼn àä ŪÁěĩŅ͡ ÚĩŅŅäʼnłĩĢàĆäĢőäʼn Á àĆʼnőĆĢőĩʼn łäríodos de la historia arquitectónica de la ciudad. De aquí la importancia que Sanabria le atribuye a la construcción del lugar desde esta obra temprana. 'ě äàĆƈÚĆĩ ʼnä äĢÚŖäĢőŅÁ äĢőŅä ġäàĆÁĢäŅÁʼn͡ äĢ ŖĢÁ łÁŅÚäěÁ muy estrecha que cruza la manzana de un extremo a otro.

Sus dos fachadas, hacia el este y el oeste, tienen la orientación más desfavorable. Está formado por dos cuerpos separados por un nivel intermedio de transición: un cuerpo ÙÁĔĩ àä àĩʼn łěÁĢőÁʼn ńŖä ĩÚŖłÁ őĩàÁ ěÁ łÁŅÚäěÁ ű ŖĢÁ łäńŖäña torre desplazada unos metros de la fachada principal.

The headquarters of the First National City Bank is located on North Avenue 4 a few meters north of Urdaneta Avenue, one of the city's main avenues. Urdaneta Avenue is two blocks north from Plaza Bolívar -the city's founding siteand is the result of the demolitions and extensions that took place in the 1950s. It was inaugurated at the end of 1953, shortly before the commission. In its surroundings, there are several buildings of value that correspond to àĆƅäŅäĢő łäŅĆĩàʼn ĩù őĂä ÁŅÚĂĆőäÚőŖŅÁě ĂĆʼnőĩŅű ĩù őĂä ÚĆőű͠ Hence the importance that Sanabria attributes to the construction of place from this early work.

The building is located between party walls, in a very narrow plot that crosses the block from one end to another. Its two facades, towards east and west, have the most unfavourable orientation. I thought the same should be done given őĂä ĢĩŅőĂäŅĢ ùÁÝÁàä ĩù őĂä ĩʼnő gƆÚä͡ ūĂĆÚĂ͡ őĩúäőĂäŅ with the presence of the Churches of Altagracia, Santa Capilla and Las Mercedes, certainly created a great opportunity to propose an improvement of urban design in this small sector, which could be the beginning of something of interest for the Traditional Center. The truth is that this low block allowed me to locate the most representative offices next to the boardroom äĢĔĩűĆĢú úÁŅàäĢʼn ÙÁőĂäà Ùű ĢÁőŖŅÁě ŹäĢĆőĂÁě ěĆúĂő͠ ͳ͠​͠​͠ʹ H ÚĩĢʼnŖěőäà őĂä ÁŅőĆʼnő ěäĔÁĢàŅĩ gőäŅĩ͡ ūĂĩ úÁŪä me ideas that opened my eyes so that I would not leave architecture but find a pleasant solution as an architect. I proposed a very simple wall, rigidly ordered, respecting the structural system and using pieces of natural granite. (...) It has kept itself through the years in perfect conditions. (...) También äʼnő ÚĩġłŖäʼnőĩ łĩŅ àĩʼn ŪĩěŗġäĢäʼn ͳŖĢ ÚŖäŅłĩ ÙÁĔĩ ű ŖĢÁ torre) pero esta vez separados y dispuestos en una plataforma que resuelve el desnivel de la parcela y los relaciona por medio de una terraza elevada sobre el nivel de la calle. El ÚĩĢĔŖĢőĩ ùĩŅġÁ łÁŅőä àä ŖĢÁ łŅĩłŖäʼnőÁ ŖŅÙÁĢÁ ńŖä ÚĩĢőäġpla la comunicación entre la Plaza Bolívar al sur y la Iglesia de Las Mercedes al norte, por medio del Bulevar Panteón.

En el momento del encargo, el banco tenía su sede en un äàĆƈÚĆĩ Ņő #äÚĪ͡ łŅĩűäÚőĩ àä <ŖʼnőÁŪĩ ©ÁěěĆʼn͡ ÚĩĢʼnőŅŖĆàĩ en los años cuarenta. Ocupaba aproximadamente la mitad de la parcela hacia el este, donde hoy en día está la torre.

ZÁ àĆŅäÚőĆŪÁ àäě ÙÁĢÚĩ ěä łĆàĆĪ Á ÁĢÁÙŅĆÁ ŖĢ ĢŖäŪĩ äàĆƈcio con una implantación tradicional que ocupara toda el solar y de aproximadamente la misma altura que su vecino hacia el oeste, el reciente Ministerio de ComunicacioĢäʼn àä ;äàäŅĆÚĩ äÚėĂĩƅͣ ÁěőŖŅÁ łäŅġĆőĆàÁ łĩŅ ěÁʼn ĩŅàänanzas de la nueva avenida. En su lugar, Sanabria propuso àĆŪĆàĆŅ ěÁ ĩÙŅÁ äĢ äě ÚĩĢĔŖĢőĩ ùĩŅġÁàĩ łĩŅ ěÁʼn àĩʼn łĆäŹÁʼn äŰäĢőÁʼn ÁÚőŖÁěäʼn͢ äě ÚŖäŅłĩ ÙÁĔĩ ĂÁÚĆÁ äě ĩäʼnőä łÁŅÁ ġÁĢtener la altura de la Iglesia de Altagracia, situada al norte

The ensemble of the Central Bank of Venezuela is located on the block next to the First National City Bank to the east and occupies its entire front towards Urdaneta Avenue. It is also composed of two volumes (a low block and a tower) but this time separated and arranged on a platform that solves the unevenness of the plot and links them through a raised terrace above street level. The ensemble is part of an urban proposal that contemplates the communication between Plaza Bolivar to the south and the Church of Las Mercedes to the north, through Pantheon Boulevard.

At the moment of the commission, the bank was located ĆĢ ÁĢ Ņő #äÚĩ ÙŖĆěàĆĢú͡ Á łŅĩĔäÚő Ùű <ŖʼnőÁŪĩ ©ÁěěĆʼn͡ ÙŖĆěő in the forties. It occupied approximately half of the plot to the east, where the tower is today. The bank's board asked Sanabria for a new building with a traditional layout that would occupy the entire site and about the same height as its neighbour to the west, Federico äÚėĂĩƅΔʼn ŅäÚäĢő `ĆĢĆʼnőŅű ĩù ĩġġŖĢĆÚÁőĆĩĢʼnͣ őĂä height permitted by the ordinances of the new avenue.

Instead, Sanabria proposed dividing it into the ensemble composed by the two current free-standing pieces: the lower block to the west in order to maintain the height

La torre, que proyectó en colaboración con su hermano Eduardo José Sanabria, fue pensaba para resolver las necesidades futuras del banco y se construyó en una segunda etapa. En este caso, evitó la insolación directa en el este y el oeste mediante unas fachadas ciegas en las que ʼnä ÁÙŅäĢ ŪÁŅĆĩʼn ΓłÁőĆĩʼnΓ ĂÁÚĆÁ ěĩʼn ńŖä ġĆŅÁĢ ěĩʼn äʼnłÁÚĆĩʼn internos y disminuyó la temperatura por medio de aletas de concreto, inspiradas por las aletas refrigerantes de los motores de automóviles.

And, as has been pointed out, they show constants and changes during the architect's process in aspects such as the evolution of the tower and lower block composition, the relationship of the building to the street or the design of the upper ends. El proceso de modernización urbana en Europa y Latinoamérica llevado a cabo entre 1940 y 1970,ha ido ÁÚĩġłÁĨÁàĩ łĩŅ ěÁ ŅÂłĆàÁ ĆġłěÁĢőÁÚĆĪĢ àä äàĆƈÚĆĩʼn en altura.
