www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk

The Newsletter Committee members wish all residents, deliverers, distributors and contributors A Very Happy and Prosperous New Year We welcome the New Year, full of things that have never been.

HINKS MEADOW HALL Hinks Meadow Hall is something to be very proud of since its successful refurbishment The Hall has given excellent service to the local community since it was built in 1997 and after the refurbishment we hope it will continue to be well used from people of our village and further afield. The improvements were funded by Taverham Parish Council, along with financial support from Broadland District Council, who we thank for providing a grant to assist with the refurbishment. The refurbishment consisted of: • Refurbished new modern kitchen • New wooden effect flooring in the main hall • Upgrading the lighting in the main hall and kitchen to LED lighting • New efficient storage heaters It is at long last a building of which the village can be proud and we are already receiving an increasing number of enquiries for private celebrations. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the hirers of the hall for support during the refurbishment and for their continued support of our hall. Hinks Meadow Hall is available for hire for private parties, functions and meetings, to enquire please contact Tracy Jones: 260538 or email taverhampc.office@gmail.com. 1

THORPE MARRIOTT VILLAGE HALL

To all residents............ YOUR HELP NEEDED! An opportunity to help preserve a local amenity. A great resolution for the New Year! Thorpe Marriott Village Hall (Registered Charity no 1006511) is a great local venue serving residents of Thorpe Marriott, Taverham and Drayton. We have a large sports hall, as well as two meeting rooms and a kitchen. We have a small volunteer committee of Trustees who meet six times a year to ensure the smooth running of the hall, together with a part-time administrator and a part-time caretaker. In addition we have a fundraising committee who organise a Spring Fayre (17th April 2016) and a Christmas Fayre (November 2016) to help with much needed funds. We also have a lot of fun along the way. We’d love some new people to join the committee, to bring new ideas and skills, to ensure we don’t become complacent. You do not have to join a committee to be there forever! Interested? Contact Mandy Marshall on 01603 261227 for more information or email: thorpemarriottvh@gmail.com

taverham village hall news

TAVERHAM FAYRE NEWS Its official! The theme for the Fayre 2016 is Sci-Fi. Now is the time to start thinking about those outfits and stall designs for your chance to win a place on the John Pelling shield for “Best Dressed Stall”. With the launch of the new Star Wars film plus Star Trek celebrating 50 years, along with the numerous films, cartoons and TV shows over the years there must be something to enable everyone to take part. And you never know there could also be a prize for the best costume. We had a good turnout for the stallholders and AGM on the 11th November and thank all those who took the time and trouble to come along and participate in the lively discussions. A number of thought provoking ideas were discussed which will help us all to stage an even better Fayre for 2016. Stallholders New & Old, make a note in your diaries now as the next stallholders’ meeting will be held on the 17th February, 7:30pm, Taverham Village Hall. By the time you attend the application forms for a stall will have been sent out and we would ask you to read it carefully prior to completion. If you are considering having a stall at this successful family event and would like to receive an application form for a stall, please contact us straight away and one will sent to you, alternatively you are welcome to attend the meeting. The committee also recognized that some small local groups may find it difficult to afford a stall and as a result have agreed to lower the price for a 3 metre stall (about the size of a standard gazeebo) to just £10 which offers superb value given the considerable number of visitors attending. Remember the date for 2016 Taverham Fayre is 9th July. Write it in your diary now. Should you have an idea, wish to offer help or simply make contact, please email TaverhamFayre@gmail.com Like us on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter. Ian Wilson, Chairman Fayre Committee

2015 has been an eventful year for the Village Hall. As always there has been a great deal of successful fundraising. Throughout the year there have been various improvements and upgrades but the piece de resistance has to be the new doors and the foyer refurbishment. Our Village Hall is certainly one we should be proud of and the committee proposes to maintain as high a standard as possible. Over the year many people have given their time freely in various ways and we are indebted to them. It is not feasible to mention them all but some stand out. Foremost is Bill Warnes who not only undertook the project management of the refurbishment in an outstanding manner but is also responsible for a fair number of repairs around the Hall. The Fund Raising committee has excelled itself again. The Hall tables have been colour coded by the Secretary, Mikaela Thaxton and the Treasurer, Christine Harding both of whom also worked tirelessly throughout the year. BOOKS DONATED TO LOCAL SCHOOLS

LITTLE NIGHTINGALES (Nursery attached to Nightingale First School) WILL BE HOLDING AN

Sammi Jo and the BEST DAY Ever by Dede Stockton I've lived in Taverham for 10 years; I'm American and my husband is English. We moved here right after our marriage in 2005 in California. In 2010, I had an accident on a horse which put me in Addenbrooke's Hospital Neocritical Unit for five weeks (coma). Getting better has been a slow process and about a year after the accident I had a titanium plate put in where I had a section of skull removed. Things are getting back to normal now except both my husband and I have retired. I was able to go back to Denver, Colorado, USA in June to see my son marry. This was my first foreign holiday since my accident. During this time I ran into an old friend, Dede Stockton, who is a writer of children's books. She gave us ten books, colouring books and page markers to distribute locally. It's taken awhile to do it but we just finished delivering the books to the various schools: Taverham Library (2 books), Nightingale First (2), Taverham Hall (1), Taverham Junior (1), Drayton Junior (1), Reepham Primary School (1) and Ghost Hill Infant and Nursery (1). Colouring books and page keepers were also given with the books. If you would like to know more about the books in the series and the author, visit www.sammijoadventures.com Jill Humphrey

LITTLE NIGHTINGALES NEWS We are getting very excited now waiting for Christmas to come. However, by the time you read this Christmas will be over and we will be looking forward to a new year. So HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL! We have been thinking of helping others at this time of the year and have helped raise money for Children in Need by wearing our super hero outfit to Nursery. Can you guess who we were dressed up as? Brenda Clarke

TAVERHAM DAY CENTRE The start of a new year is perhaps a good time to set out some details of the day centre. We have 42 members, 64% ladies, 36 % gentlemen. 17members attend on both Tuesdays and Thursdays. We have a few vacancies on Tuesdays. We pay rent to the Scouts for the use of the HQ which was purpose built with money from the Lottery Fund in 2001. Our annual turnover is about ÂŁ47000. At the last financial year, for the first in recent times, we had a small excess of income over expenditure. The centre is managed by a team of 5 paid employed staff and 26 unpaid volunteers. For details of what we do please visit our website www.taverhamdaycentre.org.uk. The photograph was taken at the presentation by Doreen Butcher of a cheque to the chairman of the daycentre from the Taverham Lions to fund our traditional Christmas lunches. Brian Wells, Chairman. www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk

Thorpe Marriott Village Hall Thorpe Marriott Village Hall held its annual Christmas Fayre on Sunday November 22nd with the hall decked out for Christmas, Ghost Hill school choir singing Christmas carols, hot sausages available from the kitchen along with traditional mince pies. The Christmas Fayre was a great success for both the stallholders and the Village Hall with ÂŁ675 being raised for ongoing improvements to the hall and its amenities. Nursery School The theme at school this half term is Festivals and Remembrance, and the Christmas celebrations are well under way at Ghost Hill. The singing club began the festivities as they took to the stage at the Thorpe Marriott Village Hall Christmas Fair and were brilliant. Well done to all the children and staff involved and thank you to everyone in the community who came to the fair and watched their performance. The Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 are busy preparing for their Christmas plays. The children have been learning the play songs and also traditional Christmas carols. This year, for the first time, our little Sunflowers (Nursery Class) are joining us in the production of ‘The Sleepy Shepard’ whilst Years 1 and 2 are performing ‘Whoops a Daisy Angel.’ We’ve not just focused on our own Christmas celebrations, but have all been thinking about others around the word. We sent over 40 shoeboxes full of toys, sweets, toiletries, clothes and stationery to Blythswood Care. They will send these boxes to people in need, in: Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Pakistan, Romania, Serbia and Ukraine. Well done everyone. Photo: Mrs Garratt (Headteacher) and Key Stage 1 children donating the shoeboxes to Blythswood Care. Maria Faithorn, Deputy Headteacher

I am delighted to be given the opportunity of introducing myself as the new Headteacher of Taverham High School. After teaching for the majority of my career in London I was very pleased to return to Norfolk, firstly to CNS and then as Headteacher of Broadland High School. As a resident of Taverham, I am passionate about this area and the young people who live here. Taverham High School is an excellent school and I am honoured to be given this position. The Ofsted visit recently confirmed the schools commitment to high standards of behaviour and safety and Mrs Plater and the staff work exceptionally hard to provide a rich and good quality education. I am ambitious for the students and want every individual to feel that they can achieve their very best academically and personally in a caring, supportive setting. Students should feel excited about going to school and be inspired by their teachers. We will work together to ensure staff continue to be creative, refresh their skills and work with other partners to enthuse and motivate the pupils that we teach. I enjoy nothing more than watching students grow and develop into polite, respectful and confident young people who make a positive contribution to the communities in which they live. I hope that you will support me by working in partnership with the school to enrich the experiences offered to students and give them the guidance and encouragement they require. This is a very important time for Taverham High School, we have a thriving sixth form that will grow and develop from strength to strength. It is a key priority for the school and the sixth formers will provide the inspiration and lead for our younger students who will look up to these teachers, engineers and surgeons of the future. Families who are interested in applying to Taverham are always welcome to visit us and find out what our school has to offer. It would be a pleasure to show you around. I look forward to meeting many of you in the future and keeping you updated with the latest news from Taverham High School. Carol Dallas, Headteacher 9

TAVERHAM WI

Dementia Friends is a national Alzheimer’s UK led programme supported by Norfolk County Council. It is about spreading the awareness of Dementia to the general public, it’s about learning the basics, so you can have an understanding what Alzheimer’s is, what Dementia is, and how can we help those around us? With an aging population across the UK, especially in Norfolk, Dementia is becoming more and more a part of our lives. Regardless of your experience, knowledge or understanding in Dementia, you can always learn something from each group. We provide a safe environment for you to take part in some of our learning activities and you won’t believe how quickly the hour goes by! In 2012 there were 6,561 people in Norfolk and Waveney diagnosed with dementia, but the true number of people with dementia in Norfolk is closer to 15,000. Over the next 3 years, the proportion of people with dementia in Norfolk and Waveney will rise by 6%. Dementia has a life changing impact on individuals, their families, friends and wider community. By becoming a Dementia Friendly Community we can take a step towards making Norfolk a County that is Dementia-Friendly. To improve awareness we are offering FREE Dementia Friends sessions in Drayton and Taverham throughout January 2016. So if it is out of personal curiosity or professional planning for your workforce, come and take part in one of our sessions. Sessions will be held at 10:00 11:00am & 7:00 - 8:00pm on the following dates: Taverham Village Hall, Thursday 14th & 21st January Bob Carter Centre, Tuesday 12th & 19th January If these sessions don’t suit your needs please contact me. I am happy to arrange a bespoke session for your group, club or workplace? I look forward to seeing you there, Sean Christie, Dementia Champion volunteer https://www.dementiafriends.org.uk/

Our membership continues to grow which is very satisfying as we have concentrated on making Taverham WI a welcoming and friendly group. We offer a varied programme of speakers and events and hope that this will interest other women in the area to come and join us. Our meeting programme for the next 6 months: 8th Jan: Social Evening – Sing along with Brenda Binns 12th Feb: Beneath the City Streets – Peter Lawrence 11th Mar: Caleys of Norwich – Adrian Simpson 8th Apr: Florists Fairies & Flowerpots – Charlotte Philcox 13th May: Cosmo’s Boots Norfolk’s favourite Clown – Cosmo Hardy 10th June: Lyons Corner House to Deputy Control of the Royal Household – Patrick Thompson All the members of Taverham WI would like to wish Newsletter staff and the readers a Healthy and Peaceful New Year. We meet on the second Friday evening of every month at 7:30pm till approx. 9:30pm in Taverham Village Hall. Gina Clapson, taverhamwi@yahoo.co.uk

YogaBubs is a fun, stimulating, but also relaxing, baby yoga and massage class, including lots of post-natal yoga for mum too. Baby Yoga and Massage is just wonderful for mother and baby for all kinds of developmental reasons; techniques will help keep baby calm, aid digestive issues and colic, encourage baby’s natural strength and movement, promote their physical development, their mental stimulation, develop their sense of trust in the world and others around them and, perhaps most importantly, help baby get their sleep (and therefore mum’s too!!). YogaBubs classes have been extremely successful at other locations in and around Norwich, so we have decided to launch a class in Taverham. Classes will begin on Thursday January 7th at Taverham Village Hall. These courses are £48 for 6 weeks and are suitable from birth to crawling. For more information and to book, please visit our website: www.norwichbabyyoga.com or call Jackie on 07813 069 529

Drayton & District Country Market at Taverham Village Hall

Happy New Year to all and we hope the market continues to thrive during 2016. We had a very successful Christmas Market with good sales and plenty of people around. We were able to send the proceeds of our raffle and tombola to Admiral Nurses who support dementia sufferers and their families. Thank you to all those who supported us. We are having a well-deserved break now but the market will re-open on Friday 22nd January at 8:45am. Do come in and visit us one Friday morning. We would be pleased to see new visitors. Any enquiries about the market please phone: Christine Marling (Secretary) 01603 865446 www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk

VALE PROBUS CLUB December 3rd - WHO’S GOT THE CROWN JEWELS? If anyone thinks the A17 across the Fens is an awful road, they should compare notes with the ghosts of King John and his retinue! Having put the “King” into King’s Lynn with a Royal Charter, he had to go and tackle some trouble in the Midlands. His foot-soldiers & baggage train (thousands of them) were sent to cross the river estuary by the shortest route (about where Sutton Bridge now is). In those days the “road” was a mere track across the mudflats. They couldn’t find the necessary guide and all but a handful never reached the other bank, having been swept away by the incoming tide. With them went King Alfred’s crown and the entire Royal Treasure which John had taken to carting about with him in case he needed ready money! John himself had gone on horseback the long way round via Wisbech so escaped the disaster - only to die of food poisoning a few days later at Newark Castle. Maybe a Templar Knight called Simon had slipped toad venom into his drink. And as a final twist to John’s bad day at the office, his “loyal” knights looted his body and possessions and then cleared off. Did it happen like this or was there a cover-up? Our guest Richard Waters had travelled from Lincoln to share his thoughts on the subject, drawn from years of wide ranging research. He had no answers but set out the whole background and narrative with much intriguing detail, so many questions emerged. Where did the Templars get their wealth? Why did the Templar Grand Master later have his HQ in a tiny outpost near the Wash, & why are there said to be lots of vaults there? How did John pay his soldiers? Why did Simon apparently merit an expensive stone monument? And so on ...... When pressed, Richard said his guess was that the Royal Treasure had been melted probably by John, but as to all the other suspicions, who will ever know? This was a thought-provoking talk which was much appreciated - all copies of Richard’s latest book on the subject were quickly snapped up! Finally, thanks to Costessey Park for a lovely first turkey lunch of the season and a REMINDER that FRIDAY 8th JANUARY is the deadline for members www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk

www.roundwood-bowls.co.uk At the time of writing excitement is mounting over the Christmas function on December 18th. Which this year involves a murder at the Bowls Club. However, never fear, with 80 amateur detectives on the case I am sure the Taverham police can rest easy! The New Year sees the annual coach trip to Potters for the World Bowls Championship on January 17th, whilst on January 27th the social competitions hot up again with a Roving Cot tournament. The County matches have seen the men’s A team win 2 out of their 3 matches, the B team lose to County Arts whilst the C team beat Pentney but lost to Hunstanton before returning to winning ways beating Gallows B by 83 shots to 75. The ladies’ A team played Dereham who are top the League but was defeated in an enjoyable match. January sees either the ladies A or B team playing at home every Saturday morning starting at 10 a.m. whilst the men’s teams have home games every Saturday p.m. (except 23rd) beginning at 2:30 p.m. Spectators are most welcome - the bar will be open for refreshments (hot and cold!) and you might be spurred on to take up the sport as a New Year’s Resolution! Taster sessions and coaching are available...... Happy New Year to all. Pam Bassham, 01603744786 13

TAVERHAM TABLE TENNIS CLUB It’s nearly the end of November and we are two months into the new Table Tennis Season. At this stage I would say that not one of our teams could be in the hunt for honours or trophies. The ‘A’ team sit fourth in the Premier ‘B’ Division of the Norwich League and have suffered from not being able to field their best team because of unavailability. Andrew Calver has the best average at 50%; Andrew Parker has played despite not being fully fit. Meanwhile the ‘B’ team has gained an advantage from the situation by being able to call on an ‘A’ team player now and again when their matches fell on different evenings. Both the Andrews have guested for the team and Michael Connolly too. The ‘B’ sits comfortably in fourth position having won six out of their nine matches. It’s good to see Jack Harrowing getting back to winning ways. In Division 2, where we have two Club teams, the ‘C’ and the ‘D’; the ‘C’ are fourth in what is proving to be a tight group. Trevor Johnson and Janet Kelly are playing well. The ‘D’ is finding it much harder following their promotion to this Division. That’s not a surprise and although at the foot of the table they have won two matches recently. Jack Stubbs had a magnificent evening against Ex- Choristers; he won both his singles and the team ran out victors 6-4. In Division 3 the ‘E’ is seventh and has had two victories. James Austen and Georgina Sunter are playing well and are ably supported by Luke Edmunds. In the County Championships in November, our junior representatives did us proud, Jack Stubbs master-blasted through his games, James Austen had one tremendous win against a ranked player and Georgina Sunter surprised some of her more elderly opponents in the Ladies Singles. However, it was Lewis Ross who brought smiles to Taverham faces he won the Under 12’s and James Austen was runner up with his partner in the Junior Doubles. Of the Seniors I was the only Taverham representative in the Veterans event. Let’s just say I turned up, but I did not go home empty-handed because I won a raffle prize. The club continues to meet on a Friday, although times are altered for December to accommodate Concerts and the Pantomime. The fall of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day on Friday this year will mean no Table Tennis. Main local contact is Dennis Calver on 01603 867924. Our President Reg Juett has been well enough to be able to come to a few ‘B’ Team matches; it has been marvellous to see him. John Vaughan, Taverham Table Tennis Club www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk

Murphy (1992-2015) Murphy or “Bear” is my special case of the month. Sadly we recently lost Murphy at the wonderful age of 23. She is a great example of how veterinary care of the geriatric cat has advanced and thanks to many dedicated owners cats are now living longer and maintaining a good quality of life throughout their senior years. Murphy was never my biggest fan but she tolerated my regular checks and this allowed me to treat many of the conditions that she and many other older cats develop. Murphy was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism 4 years ago. This is a fairly common condition in senior cats who often present with weight loss despite an increased appetite. The condition can be treated with medication, diet, surgery or radio-iodine injections. Murphy was treated with tablets hidden inside some “ease flex” chewy joint tablets (and some wafer thin chicken!) and her condition remained very stable. She did develop high blood pressure which is associated with both hyperthyroidism and kidney disease. She developed a bleed in her eye which is one of the more common visible signs of hypertension in cats. The bleed resolved and luckily her sight remained. Murphy was medicated with amlodipine which is a very effective treatment for lowering blood pressure. In her later years Murphy in common with many senior cats showed signs of stiffness and reduced strength in her limbs. Arthritis is often not appreciated by owners of older cats because they tend to show less obvious signs than in dogs. A reluctance to jump, less inclination to walk around, failing to groom themselves and irritability can all be signs of arthritis. Murphy was put on meloxicam which is an effective anti-inflammatory and pain killer and together with some adaptations at home this allowed her to maintain her mobility and to continue to reach the sofa! More recently Murphy showed signs of renal disease and this was treated with a prescription food and an ACE-inhibitor. Luckily she enjoyed her new diet and managed to maintain a good weight with her kidney parameters visibly improving on the treatment. Sadly Murphy eventually developed fluid around her lungs which was suspected to be due to thoracic neoplasia and she passed away naturally and peacefully in her owner’s arms at the surgery. She will be greatly missed by all the staff but she is one of those lucky cats who certainly could not have been loved and cared for any more. Our cat hotel is now open on Longwater Lane in Costessey and already busy. Please take a look at our new cattery Facebook page to see some of our recent guests! District Council Report Taverham South NDR (Northern Distributor Road): The government has now released the funding for the road from the hub to the 1067. Broadly Active: Broadly Active is a Doctor’s Referral Scheme (run by Broadland District Council.) It is now 10 years old. Broadly Active has helped 100's of people over the 10 years. One of the greatest success stories has been John Graves’ weight loss of 30 stone! He is now leading a normal life, going to the gym and eating a healthy diet. For more information about Broadly Active call Dan Goodwin on 01603 430487. Dog Fouling: I am very happy to report that dog fouling in parts of Taverham has improved. Over the last month I have not had any phone calls reporting this matter. Well done Taverham! Parking at St Edmunds School: The roads around the school have deteriorated (Taverham Road, St Edmunds Rise and Roedich Drive). I have had complaints regarding Roedich Drive in particular. Cars are parked on both sides of the road, near the entrance to St Edmunds Road, and others are having difficulty getting through. There was a near miss with a child the other day, the police have been informed. I wish everybody a Happy New Year! Please contact me on 01603 861243. Claudette Bannock

We continue to be very busy knitting and stitching for good causes. As news of our work spreads so do the requests. We've even received appeals from London Hospitals but as a volunteer run organisation we rely on good, free delivery links. Lottery funded or not there is not money for posting bulky parcels. Those of you who have visited The Wool Loft will also know storage is at a premium. Meanwhile we will do our best to help and enjoy ourselves at the same time. The Vintage Christmas Fayre in the Norwich Christchurch Centre, where our Wool Loft is, was a great success both as a fund-raiser and fun event; thanks to all involved. Our first meeting of 2016 will be at Hink's Meadow Community Café, Kingswood Avenue, Thorpe Marriott 1:30pm - 3:30pm Thursday, 14th January. For more information contact Margaret Noble 01603 860717 or visit website norfolkknitters.org.uk

Country dance band Rig-a-Jig-Jig performing at the Barn Dance Taverham & District Lions have been busy fundraising for the Drayton Junior swimming pool appeal. The heating system at Drayton Junior school swimming pool urgently needs replacing but with money tight in the education budget it is up to the local schools and swimming groups who use the pool to come up with the money. To help kick-start the appeal Taverham & District Lions have held two events recently, a Barn Dance at Thorpe Marriott Village Hall on October 3rd and a Quiz & Chips night at Weston Longville ‘Hall for All’ on November 14th and between them have already raised approx. £850 towards the total of £20k plus that is needed to update and repair the heating system. For all future events, news and fundraising activities of Taverham & District Lions please visit our website at www.taverhamlions.weebly.com or follow us on Facebook and Twitter. Roger Horn

On 2 November Barrie Lawrence, a retired dentist, came to see us again to tell us more of his antics as a dentist. He has written another book since we last saw him titled Patients from Heaven. He was in Dentistry for 40years and worked in Dorset, Norwich and Aylsham for much of his career. He spoke of his life when he became a Born again Christian after being an atheist for many years, also his life in dentistry. He has three books published. They are titled "A Dentist’s Tale", "Patients from Heaven" and "There must be more to life Than This" which is a Christian book, buy the books and you will not be disappointed. His stories are amazing and very funny. Great speaker. At our meeting on 17th November we played a card game called Hoy which was very enjoyable then had a chat with friends. Nice sociable afternoon. On 18th November we went to Braintree Shopping Outlet the weather was lovely and sunny. Everyone had a good time. Carol Frost 17

TAVERHAM BAND

TAVERHAM ALLOTMENTS (TALGA)

www.taverhamband.org

It is a popular misconception that January is a month when there is little or nothing to do on the allotment or in the garden. Although the weather at this time of year can restrict gardening activities there are often days when it is great to get outside. It is important during the winter months to start to prepare for the beginning of the growing season in the spring. Clearing up and composting the remains of old crops is essential to reduce the carryover effect of diseases from one year to the next. It will also reduce the numbers of slugs and snails that will be overwintering in old plant debris in readiness for attacking new crops as they appear in the spring. January can also be a good time to dig the soil. This process allows small weeds to be buried, providing a cheap form of green manure. Leaving the soil in large lumps reduces the effort needed in digging and also aerates the soil. Allowing air into the soil will reduce the activity of anaerobic loving bacteria that reduce the level of nitrogen in soil. Our allotments are provided each year with manure and this is also a good time to dig this in as part of a rotation system. One job that I really look forward to doing during January is buying the ‘seed’ potatoes for the coming year. I like to buy these loose rather than in pre-packed bags. This has the advantage of selecting potatoes that are of the optimum size (about the size of a hen’s egg) and to ensure that they are not damaged or diseased in any way. The selected potatoes can then be kept in a light, frost free, place to ‘chit’, during which time they will produce shoots and be ready to plant in the spring. In addition to the jobs on the allotment there are also crops that can be harvested during the winter months. The lovely loamy soil on our allotments allows us to leave parsnips in the ground to be harvested even in cold weather. Hardy savoy cabbages will tolerate very cold weather as will sprouts and leeks. I have been harvesting all of these for the past few months. If you are interested in having an allotment plot, or ½ plot, in Taverham, TALGA can be contacted by e-mail (talgasecretary@btinternet.com). Please note that unfortunately applications for plots can only be accepted from people resident in the parish of Taverham. Cliff Hedley

Welcome back after the Christmas break! The band’s Christmas season will be reported next month. Traditionally January and February are the quieter months for the band before we get into our spring season. 2016 is looking to be another busy year for the band and with membership still high and children keen to learn brass at schools we are all working hard! 2016 will see the Band performing in Ypres and also taking part in the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate at the end of July. We shall also be performing the Cromer Carnival concert this year in August. Our next concerts at the Taverham Village Hall will be a little bit later this year with Easter falling as it does so April 22nd and 23rd will be the dates and watch out for details of these next month. Tickets will go on sale from February! Ian Colman (Musical Director) 01603 868680

Taverham Youth Centre In November the Centre’s members enjoyed a Bonfire themed week with a Guy Fawkes quiz, mask decorating and Hot dogs. The young people have also been Ceramic painting and Pizza making. In addition to this we are supporting the Christmas Day event at Hinks Meadow. The young people are making Christmas crackers and cards for all the people that attend the day. We would like to give a big thank you to the Kitchenary and Whispers Boutique from the Taverham Nursery & Country shopping centre and RJC Hair for their generosity and support to our Christmas raffle. Due to our increased membership we require additional voluntary staff, CAN YOU HELP? You would be fully supported, gain a DBS check and access to low cost and free training. If you would like to get involved or any other details about our projects please contact Kerry at kjyouthwork@hotmail.co.uk or call/text on 07887 950002. All the staff and members at Taverham Youth Centre would like to wish all the readers a happy and healthy Christmas and New Year. Kerry Johnson

Pre-school music classes led by a local musician

If you know a toddler who likes to shake, rattle and roll, you might enjoy coming along to a new music class at Taverham and Drayton Village Halls. The classes offer 40 minutes of musical fun, singing songs, learning rhymes, telling stories and playing instruments and games. The teacher, Pippa Yuill, is a local mum and grade 8 cellist who plays in Norwich orchestras and chamber ensembles. She trained with PRESMA (the Pre-School Music Association) and believes that music in the early years is a great way to develop speech and language, emotional expression, memory, coordination and concentration and also that it provides a good opportunity to have lots of fun! Classes run during term time for children 12 months to school age accompanied by a parent/carer and cost £4 per session. Taverham Village Hall - Wednesdays, 9:30am Drayton Village Hall - Tuesdays, 9:30am If you are interested, please call Pippa on 01603 869819 or email pippa.yuill@gmail.com to reserve a free taster session. 19

TAVERHAM HISTORY SOCIETY

www.1sttaverhamscouts.co.uk

We were extremely pleased with the support our Yuletide event received in November. The background music did not deter from allowing guests to “mardle” as intended and added to the atmosphere. It has to be said the table top quiz did prove to be a bit challenging but everyone took part with the winners receiving a small prize. There were so many prizes in the bumper raffle it may have gone on for quite a while but in itself did prove to be entertaining and we thank all who kindly contributed in creating this seasonal extravaganza. The considerable number of favourable comments and compliments from all who attended was very much appreciated by the committee and supporting “Friends” which made all the hard work so worthwhile. In our opinion it proved to be a great success and plan to hold next year’s event on the 16th November 2016. Make a note somewhere now as you will not wish to miss this one. We would also like to thank a “Friend” who kindly allowed us to have sight of some excellent research that had been carried out on family records relating to St Edmund’s Church which we will certainly investigate further. This help allows us to spend time on further research and avoids reinventing what has already been successfully achieved. The committee are progressing with collating photos and information for the “Remember When” evening on the 16th March and will provide more information next month but it will not hurt to pop the date in your diary now. A printed copy of our events for 2016 will be available at each of our meetings or alternatively can be found under the appropriate tab on our blog. Group Joining List – Waiting lists are all full at present and will reopen again in the future Group Chairman & Contact – Ian Colman 01603 868680 chairman@1sttaverhamscouts.co.uk Happy New Year! Seventeen Cubs from both the Monday and Tuesday night packs attended a district swimming event at Victory Pool, North Walsham in mid-November. All the Cubs who attended completed their stage 1 swimmer badge, with 3 Cubs (Xander, Samuel & George) going on to complete all 11 elements of the stage 2 swimmer badge, including swimming 100m non-stop and treading water for 3 minutes. Well done to all involved. Both packs went to the New Taverham Players Panto of Jack and the Beanstalk at the end of November, for a bit of pre-Christmas fun! Our annual fireworks evening was as busy as ever with over £7000 being raised for funds. A big thanks to all those who supported. Annual General Meeting: This was held in November and the Group reported on a busy but challenging year with a great amount of work carried out on the grounds and leaders working hard to provide the fabulous activities for the children. Our biggest challenge is adult support mainly to provide the week to week activities for the children. We also said thanks to John Wilson who after 12 years is handing over the treasurer role to Tim Porter. We also welcomed Dan Fordham to the Executive Committee. Chairman Ian Colman is retiring as Group Chairman but staying on the Executive Committee. His successor will be appointed in due course. Leaders: We still need more adults willing to help with the Group and provide activities for the youngsters. We have to turn children away from having the chance to enjoy Scouting simply because of lack of adults. If you are over 18 and want to give something back to the children then get in touch. We have a great opportunity to develop the next generation. If you can help please get in touch. HQ Hire: We currently have time available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during the day to hire the HQ for groups/meetings etc. If you are looking for a regular home in Taverham and would like further details then please get in touch.

Drayton Horticultural Association

THE NORWICH ELECTRONIC ORGAN & KEYBOARD CLUB

Your Local Gardening Club

Tuesday 24th November - Paul Carman: Paul is a much respected player on the UK organ circuit and has over 25 years’ experience in the keyboard industry; manufacturing, wholesale and retail. He has spent much of that time heading up Orla Direct but has been involved with other well-known keyboard companies and has also recently taken on the UK distributorship for Bohm. Paul is a good all-round entertainer with many musical talents and is quite a romantic at heart. This was his first visit to our club so he was able to introduce himself and his quick sense of humour alongside his arrangements on the Bohm Overture and also his silky smooth singing voice, which is well-suited to the ballads he obviously loves. Theatre organ, big band arrangements, sambas and rumbas were also included in Paul’s programme and combined to make a very relaxing final evening of our 2015 concerts helped, of course, by the free teas, coffees and warm mince pies, the bigger than usual raffle, plus the TV up for grabs in what has now become our annual free Christmas raffle. Tuesday January 26th 2016 will be our next meeting when we have our short AGM followed by music with Trevor Flunder on the latest Lowrey organ. We would like to wish everybody a very Happy and Peaceful New Year. We have many big names of the organ world lined up for 2016 so watch this space! Do come and join us for an evening of good musical entertainment with like-minded friendly people, you will be very welcome. Martin Drake (Chairman), 01603 745544

When it comes to looking after trees it's not just a matter of getting out the pruners or saws, as we learnt at our November meeting from our expert arboriculturist Richard Ravencroft. He showed us lots of 'do's' and 'don'ts', what and where to cut and how to avoid doing more harm than good. There was a lot of information for us to take in, including the fact that professional tree surgeons do not tout for business by knocking on doors! Something to cheer us up is another visit by David Boulton on Tuesday, 5th January with "Images of Spring", a good start to the New Year. It will soon be time to start planting seeds in the garden or in trays in the greenhouse particularly if we are thinking of our Plant Sale on the 7th May which again has been booked to take place on the Florence Carter Playing Field in the centre of the village - more details nearer the time. If anyone has any specific items they wish to order please let me know. Sid Bunn - 867837

MODERN SEQUENCE DANCE CLUB Another year is starting so let’s hope that it heralds some good new sequence dances. During last year a few decent dances were introduced and, according to our members, they do enjoying the new ones that we taught during that period. In fact there is still one that hasn’t been mentioned yet namely “Lace Agate Swing”. That dance was a winner at the Ada Unsworth Memorial Inventive Dance Competition at the beginning of November 2015. On November 20th we introduced it at our Friday dance where it was received with many complimentary comments. I do hope that other local clubs introduce it so that it can be enjoyed at many venues for it certainly merits being danced. The only problem with it is remembering its name for somehow it does not roll off the tongue. It makes you ask the question “from where do the names of dances come?” Whether or not you can answer that please come and join us for an afternoon of enjoyment at The Costessey Centre, Longwater Lane any Friday at 2:00pm. Till then Happy dancing and of course a Happy and Healthy New Year to all. John Gant www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk

DRAYTON FLOWER CLUB Our Golden Anniversary year drew to a close with a fantastic demonstration by Lee Berrill of 'Deck the Halls'. As mentioned before Lee is most inventive and once again did not disappoint. Lee began at the gate of a manor house with an upside down Christmas tree, continued along the drive passed a frozen fountain, up to a front door, into a grand hall and finally to a Christmas dining table. The arrangements were, to say the least, spectacular; using flowers, foliage, manipulated foliage and spray paint to stunning effect. A most memorable way to end the year. Here's to the next ten years of friendship and fun with flowers and foliage! We have a speaker in January as the cost of flowers for a full blown demonstration is astronomical and so we will be welcoming Rachel Duffield and her interpretation of Queen Victoria. Everyone is most welcome to any of our meetings which are held on the third Tuesday of every month in Drayton Village Hall at 7:30 p.m. A very Happy Healthy and hopefully Peaceful New Year to everyone.
