Please note all photographs which appear in the Newsletter in B & W and all those I am sent but do not use, can be found on the website www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk in colour in the Gallery Dear Readers and the Cameron Green Community, You may have seen me training my dogs on the little green at the side of Ghost Hill School. I wanted to write and say thank you for sharing the green with me and to let you know, your sharing paid off! We won the big competition and are off to compete in the Obedience Championships at Crufts in March 2020. Many a time children from school have happily shared the green and provided invaluable distraction as we trained. So have mums and dads playing with their families and others playing football and cricket. Without the green we would not have been able to do our training and I thank you all. Come January 2020 you will see our training activities increase as we prepare for the big day. Thank you also to Broadland Dog Training Club, we started there over seven years ago in puppy class and the bronze Good Citizen class; they still let me go back occasionally! And if a mad dog lady asks you to "scent" up a cloth, it's me as we train for the big day. Kind Regards, Deborah Steele

Apology You may have noticed a problem with the TEC piece in June’s edition. I and the printer would like to apologise for this mistake and hope we have learnt how to improve things. I also hope it did not cause too much confusion. From St Edmund’s Church Wardens, We would like to let the community know why we have had to remove some trees from the churchyard. We have some diseased trees and having received advice from the Church Authorities and a trusted and respected tree surgeon they have been taken out. One was dangerous and had to be removed ASAP. As this required a crane to do so safely, we have taken the opportunity to remove other diseased areas and to have the remaining lime trees pollarded. We have checked and could find no nesting birds in these trees. The tree surgeon was well aware of the duty to not disturb nesting birds at this time of year so would not have carried out the work had the issue arisen.

T

he competition was Waldridge Fell Dog Training Club Championship show at Herrington Country Park near Sunderland. It was a three day show over the bank holiday with Ticket class (qualifying class for Crufts) on the Sunday. This is our first ticket win. If you win three tickets under three different judges then you are allowed to call your dog an Obedience Champion. But Mocha is already that to me lol. We started training seven and a half years ago and it is so exciting to have won the "top" class. There are 45 ticket shows over the year but many are on the same weekend. Recently there was one in Exeter on the Saturday and Waldridge Fell on the Sunday. And some do travel! We had travelled from Norfolk to the Wirral, then onto Scotland (combining a holiday and visiting relatives with a show up in Scotland) and came home via Waldridge Fell! Thank you for your interest. The local community really has been very supportive in sharing their space.

Drayton & District Country Market Taverham Village Hall

The Country Market has been opening weekly in Taverham Village Hall for over 12 years, after moving from Drayton. To continue we need extra helpers, whether just to man the tables, serve coffee or do occasional baking. Please do also support us as customers. We have an assortment of baked goods, preserves and eggs, plants and garden produce, crafts and greetings cards. Without more people we will have to consider opening just once a month or closing completely. Visit us on Friday mornings between 8:30 and 11:00 am in the Old Hall at Taverham Village Hall. TAVERHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN

taverham village hall news

www.taverhamplan.co.uk

The Taverham Neighbourhood Plan is your community-led document for guiding the future development of the parish. It is about the use and development of land over the next 20 years. As we aim to have the Plan finalised, approved and adopted early next year, we are looking towards Taverham in 2040.

We’re almost there! We are holding an exhibition of the draft Plan on Thursday 4th July at Taverham Village Hall from 1pm to 8pm. Key elements of the Plan are the proposed local planning policies, intended to shape and guide planning decisions in Taverham. You will be able to look in detail at the 14 policies, how they have been developed from the earlier consultations and why they are important for our village. In response to the consultations, a number of Community Projects are proposed. These become the responsibility of Taverham Parish Council. The Parish Council would be able to use Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) money to assist with these projects. Two such projects are;  Identify what sort of new open spaces will be required in the future, taking into account existing provision.  Investigate the potential for further recreational facilities for young people. As well as the exhibition, you will be able to read and comment on the Plan at various local locations (see our posters and flyers) and online from 6th July until 31st August. The responses from the last consultation told us that we were on the right track regarding the draft objectives and policies. There have been some changes, following feedback. Now we need to know whether you agree that the draft Plan will deliver the vision for Taverham. After this consultation, the Plan will be revised and submitted to Broadland District Council for examination and referendum, most likely next spring. If voted for by residents, it will become part of the statutory development for the area. We are always happy to hear from you about Taverham’s future taverhamplan@gmail.com. A well-written Neighbourhood Plan is the opportunity to make a difference. We hope that you will take this opportunity. Your Neighbourhood, Your Plan Chris Wilson-Town, Committee Member

www.taverhamvillagehall.yolasite.com The ever popular Plant Sale started slowly on the 18th May but we need not have worried as several gardening enthusiasts looking for quality plants at rock bottom prices arrived and quickly purchased our vast stocks. Some were so impressed they came back for more contributing to the huge figure of £704. Add to this the £500 maximum match funding received from Lloyds Bank PLC, the event raised an amazing £1204. A special thank you to Stephen Cook of Lloyds Bank, who kindly remained throughout the sale and

willingly assisted customers laden with plants to their cars. What another fantastic achievement by the fundraising team! Thank you to all helpers and growers for your support and donations of such high quality plants ensuring our customers are certain to return next year. Just to remind you, our project this year is the refurbishment of the main ladies toilet facilities and your continued support is much appreciated. The work will commence during August and our aim is to keep any disruption to a minimum and would ask you to be patient with us during these improvements to what are already fantastic facilities.

‘KEEPING IT LOCAL’

Harry has made it to New York!!!

For the past 7 years, we have held a Charity Ball at the end of November to fundraise for local charities. So far we have raised money for Finnbar’s Force, Orchid, Priscilla Bacon and many more. This year we would like to help someone in our local community. Do you know of anyone needing help fundraising? Is there something we’re missing in Taverham or Drayton that we could help towards? Please contact us if you know of anyone or anything that would appreciate our help, our contact details are below. The ball will be held at Wensum Valley, on Saturday 30th November. It’s a great evening, raising money and ‘keeping it local’. The Lee Vasey band will be entertaining us for the evening and the fabulous local photographer Julia Holland of All About Image will be there taking snaps. Tickets will be £36 and include a 3 course meal and arrival drink. The more the merrier! Tickets can be purchased by calling the numbers below. We look forward to hearing from you, The Pennell Family, 01603 260988, 07789790066 or chelseapennell@icloud.com

We cannot thank you all enough for helping us get to this point; thanks to Harry's Heroes we smashed our £239,000 target. Most of this was raised by our fantastic local community through donations, organising events, attending events, setting challenges to raise sponsorship money and spreading the word of Harry's Appeal. We are so very grateful to each and every one of you. As we write this Harry has had his first vaccine and thankfully tolerated it well. He has a further six vaccines over the coming year. This vaccine is by no means a guaranteed cure, although we do hope it will reduce Harry's chances of Relapse. The future remains uncertain, should Harry Relapse our only option would be more privately funded treatment abroad. So please keep Harry in your thoughts, we want to give him the best chance of beating this horrid disease and we thank you all for helping us do this. We feel very lucky to live in such a caring and supportive community. Ali, Carly, Isobel (best big sister ever) and Harry (our little superhero)

TAVERHAM and DISTRICT LIONS CLUB The club was proud to be involved and also to support the NNUH Dementia Information and Advice Fayre, which was the third to be held at the hospital, and was set against a stunning cascade of over 12,000 knitted or crocheted Forget-me-nots that formed a “waterfall”. The flowers had been created by individuals and community groups from across Norfolk so we were pleased that we could represent Taverham at such a huge event that had seven speakers who gave the hundreds who attended a wealth of information on subjects such as support for carers, dementia research and assistive technology. The Dementia Support Team at NNUH also received a donation of new activities from Taverham and District Lions Club. The new resources will be used to carry out one-to-one meaningful activities with patients living with dementia. The picture shows Lion’s President Sue Howes with Lions David Plunkett and Nigel Howes presenting the dementia aids. May was quite busy as we supported the Taverham Junior School’s Spring Fayre with our BBQ and repeated the process three days later at the two day Costessey Fayre so to say we were K……ed is an understatement. Now you know why I “droll on” about asking you all to consider if you could manage a once a month meeting by becoming a local Lion’s member. I won’t say “oh yes we did” but we had over 20 members and partners attended the excellent New Taverham Player’s “Made in Dagenham”. Lion John Paling Contact: Lion Nigel Howes 861114

MESSY CHURCH We have been talking about the Parable of the Sower. The children were able to do lots of craft activities; including using sunflower seeds for a lovely collage, as well as making paper plate storytellers. An activity which was particularly enjoyed, was making seed bombs. The children took these home to throw in a space in their garden. Everyone enjoyed a snack of water melon, and was amazed at the amount of seeds inside. The session finished with us all going outside in the glorious sunshine to sow seeds in the churchyard. Brenda Clarke The next Messy Church is on 9th July.

TAVERHAM YOUTH CENTRE

THE FRIENDS OF NIGHTINGALE

Hello Readers, We hope you are enjoying the warmer weather and looking forward to the long summer holidays In May we continued to prepare for the Summer Fayre. The young people enjoyed the good weather and the use of new sponge footballs, hula hoops and giant Jenga for their outside activities. We closed for a week to allow the NTP to use our room as a backstage area, in support of ‘Made in Dagenham’. Our final week before half term was themed around ‘wellbeing’ of the body and mind. We had information available on healthy diets, living, mental health, stress and exercise, discussions on known ways to relieve stress, free fresh fruit, a word game and an exercise survey. We also introduced new alternative methods to alleviate anxieties or stress by way of; back, foot and manual or battery powered head massage, smells and Chinese balls of life. The members were keen to try these new, to them, ideas. Our clubs are now supporting the Hallswood animal sanctuary and the Hogmedods hedgehog support by collecting empty crisp packets which they recycle for cash. If you would like to recycle more feel free to add to our collection during opening hours (see P 27 or the website). For new members the first session is FREE then £1 entry there after. This includes access to/use of all the facilities (pool, table tennis, Xbox, WII, air hockey, table football, tuck shop) and free refreshments. We welcome all young people regardless of ethnicity, ability or religious/social background. Please be aware that for the Wednesday club; we open on a first come first serve basis, the limited number will depend on how many staff we have in that night so please wait with your child until you know they are signed in. Once signed in they are not permitted to leave the boundaries of the club which only includes inside and the immediate supervised vicinity outside. On the other night clubs we are only responsible for the member once they have signed in for the evening and are within the building. They are welcome to come and go as they please during the session but we are not responsible for them once they are outside the building. If you would like to get involved or any other details about our projects, please contact Kerry at kjyouthwork@hotmail.co.uk or call/text on 07887 950002 Kerry Johnson, Lead Youth Worker

Since our last report we have almost hit our target of raising £5000 for the school library and resources. This money is being well spent already with the purchase of front facing bookcases for the classrooms and topic related books for the children. We have also spent the £1000 which was raised from the local Tesco Bags of Help scheme on the outdoor areas with new planters and tools and outdoor toys for the children to enjoy. Thanks to all who have supported the fund raising events to enable us to do this. We do have some more exciting things coming up with cake sales, school discos, sponsored circuit challenge for the children and our Summer Fayre. This year’s Summer Fayre is not to be missed on Saturday 13th July 11:00 – 2:00pm at the school. It is circus themed with bouncy castle, games, stalls, performances, food and a bar. All welcome! Miranda Raine, Secretary

TAVERHAM DAY CENTRE Last month I reported on a grant from a national charity. This month I announce a donation from a local group. The Taverham Youth Centre, led by Kerry Johnson, raised £100 which was match funded by P Nunn Installations. The photograph is of the presentation of the cheque to some members of the Day Centre on the 21st May. As a result of proposed staff changes we would like to appoint a person to help our treasurer with the day to day finances of the Day Centre. New volunteers are always welcomed, especially on a Thursday. If we can help you, or if you can help us, please contact the Day Centre. Phone 01603 865839 on a Tuesday or Thursday, text or phone Brian on 07543882928 at any time. Brian Wells, Chairman 9

MEL CLARKE Taverham’s Double Paralympic medallist

Happily ever after! Many of the residents of Taverham, Thorpe Marriott and Drayton will remember Mel and understand why we thought we would never see photos such as these. Mel was taken very ill some years ago whilst representing Great Britain in Archery in New York. She spent a month in hospital there, most of it in intensive care. We were told that it was unlikely that she would ever return home, and that if she did, she would never speak, walk, or even see properly again, let alone draw a bow to shoot. Those of you who know Mel know that she always defies the odds, and takes everything in her stride. Two years to the day that she was taken ill, she became World Champion in Compound Archery. She accepted everything that was wrong with her, and did all she could to prove everyone wrong. Mel has done some amazing things in her life, including travelling all over the world and meeting amazing people. She is a well known public speaker and often speaks to a hall full of up to 1,000 people. She has personally met the Queen on several occasions, driven sheep over London Bridge in her in role as a Freeman of the City of London and has friends all over the world with whom she is constantly in touch. Also, who can say they have spent the day filming with David Beckham! The highlights will of course have been her Paralympic bronze medal at Beijing and her Silver at London. She had to turn her place down for Rio as she was recovering from an operation. She has been an Ambassador for the Youth Sport Trust for many years, in Norfolk, Worcestershire and now in Shropshire and through that work has visited many schools and colleges throughout the UK. None of this would have been able to happen without the local community around Taverham who supported Mel and our family in those dark times. It was such a comfort knowing there was always someone to go to for support. There were so many people, too many to mention, but a few include Stuart Clancy, Yvonne Todd from Foxwood, the local schools and St. Edmunds Church and the many local sponsors. This includes Taverham Newsletter, and more recently David Ross who has continuously updated everyone about Mel’s achievements. Through various fundraising events sufficient funds were raised to purchase a new electric wheelchair for Mel. This was presented to her by the Proclaimers, at a special event. Over the years Mel has made us extremely proud through all that she has achieved. Well, we have now reached what we think, is the happy ending. Mel is now married (and yes, she did wear a dress, the first for over 20 years) to Richard and their daughter Cali was born in January. Mel has made the very hard decision to retire and has left her beloved archery. She loves being a mum and wants to spend time at home with Cali, and is so enjoying her life in Shropshire with her new family. So this is really the last update you will have on Mel for a while. This also proves what a fantastic community we live in around here. In a way the recent support being given to little Harry Deeba, brought all this back to us with all the events and fundraising that was done for Mel when we needed it most. Thank you, Brenda and Stephen Clarke. https://paralympics.org.uk/articles/double-paralympic-medallist-clarke-calls-time-on-stellar-car https://www.facebook.com/mel.clarke.16 www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk

TAVERHAM TABLE TENNIS CLUB The 2018/19 Table Tennis season is over and the recent 54th AGM of the Taverham Club gave all of us an opportunity to reflect on the past twelve months. Financially we made a small profit on the year; no increase in match fees would therefore be warranted. However, in terms of playing strength, there was recognition that the Club no longer has the playing reserves to sustain five teams with adequate squad bases to compete in the Norwich and District League. As a result, the Club will have four teams next season, hopefully one in Premier B, two in Division 1 and one in Division 2A. It is expected that Lewis Ross, James Austen and Alex Edmunds will become members of the ‘B’ team squad. The ‘E’ may have lost out on promotion by the narrowest of margins but the players haven’t as they will be playing Division 1. This summer will also see the 40th year of the German Exchange visit with Eislingen. This was the brainchild of the late Bill Todd and it is a tribute to him, his widow Yvonne and both the Foxwood and Taverham Clubs and our German friends that this contact continues. Activities and excursions are planned for their visit in the last week of July; we pray the weather will be kind for the outdoor events. The Club meets on a Friday evening and coaching is normally allocated twice a month in the earlier part of the evening. Please contact Dennis Calver on 01603 867924 for actual times and dates. John Vaughan, Chairman Taverham TTC.

www.roundwood-bowls.co.uk Is Roundwood completely round the bend? Not that we are aware of. But we are in a delightful sylvan setting, cutting right as the road to Ringland falls and slips to the river. So we are almost over the hill and nearly round the bend. Linked with the Roundwood Function and Conference Centre, we enjoy a relaxed open lounge, with bar and a superb view of the drama, comedy and frankly inexplicable play unfolding on the rinks. Non-members always welcome to enjoy the open bar. We have six rinks and the summer months offer excellent coaching slots. With experienced, qualified coaches offering held to County Level (speak to Brian Deakins or Barry Stiles), for good Club level with a snag to resolve (contact Roger Bassham, Brian or Barry) and for new starts add Bob Daykin to the above. £3 will buy you two hours and a series of up to 5 sessions (10 hours) will teach you the basic rules and techniques you need to enjoy and join in casual play. Juniors enjoy a reduced rate. You may be a natural and only need two or three or born dead brill and one’s enough. We can all dream. Played at various levels, the Club offers something for all. Our top players compete in the First Division of the County Indoor Men’s and Ladies’ Leagues. Our Second teams just below. Internal Leagues are the bread and butter of the Club where players of all levels, size and age, weekly contest pairs and triples, mixed and single sex, over matches lasting two hours. We then have “Roll-ups”. Less formal in that we have a drinks break after an hour, the teams being drawn by chance on the day and we encourage you to try a variety of positions!

We have always made blankets, hats and gloves to keep warm those who are forced to sleep on the streets but until September we are focussing on scarves. St. Martin's Trust is going to construct a house made of scarves, (15cm x 100cm), in the Cathedral and they need lots! Some of those scarves will be black to represent those that die on our streets. The range of charities we support continues to grow and work from all over the county will be on display at a Grand Exhibition in Wymondham on the 5th October. As one of the larger groups, Taverham is organising the raffle and tombola for the event so if you have any suitable gifts to donate please get in touch. Margaret Noble

LET’S TALK RUBBISH: In particular, recycled rubbish and what can and cannot be put into your grey bins. Unfortunately this still seems to cause a lot of confusion. Broadland as an area already has a recycling rate above the national average, at 50%, but with your help, we can continue to improve on this. In fact, we must improve, for the sake of our environment and to reduce carbon gases. I always thought I was pretty good at recycling, but I must admit, after talking to the team at Broadland, I certainly learnt something new such as replacing the lids on clean jars, bottles and tubs. Did you know that one tonne of plastics recycled = one tonne of carbon savings? So you are helping to keep plastics out of the natural environment and helping to save the planet. It is important that everything in your grey bin is recyclable, clean, dry and not in a bag so it can be processed at the central facility. Unfortunately, at the moment, one in every five recycling trucks in Norfolk is contaminated as people are putting the “wrong things” in their bins. Please have a look below for more guidance, and if you are unsure about anything, the team at Broadland are always willing to give you advice. The contact details are: 01603 430534 or recycling@broadland.gov.uk And remember, now you can also recycle clean glass jars and bottles (with lids on), as well as wrapping paper and greeting cards. For a full list of what can and can’t be recycled visit www.broadland.gov.uk/recycle Remember 3 simple rules: LOOSE, CLEAN and DRY Happy recycling everybody! Cllr. Caroline Karimi-Ghovanlou, 07762879018 or Cllr.Caroline.KarimiGhovanlou@Broadland.gov.uk

TALGA

TAVERHAM HISTORY SOCIETY

www.talga.org What do Christmas and July have in common? Hoe, Hoe, Hoe. July is typically the driest month of the year so this is an excellent time to see off any weeds that have been accumulating. You don’t need to do it the hard way by pulling out each weed in turn; you can use one of my favourite tools, the Dutch hoe. Simply be running this over the ground at a very shallow depth, you detach the weed heads from the roots and then let the sun to the rest. Watering is also paramount at this time of year as we tend to have very little rain and the dry conditions soon leach any moisture out of the soil. Early morning or evenings are the best times to avoid high losses due to evaporation. This makes especially good sense on our allotment where hose pipes are not permitted. Repetitively lugging two 10 litre watering cans from the water trough to the plot can be tiring work! After losing many young plants to wildlife last year, I decided on a new netting strategy. I now make a trench around the plants I wish to protect and bury the bottom six inches of the netting in the ground. So far, this seems to be working, although it could just be luck! If you are interested in an Allotment plot and are a resident of Taverham or Drayton please contact Mike Raw at TalgaRequests@gmail.com You can also reach us through our website or drop into the Parish Council Office. Johnathan Cox (Trainee gardener)

On Wednesday, 17th July, 7:30pm, Taverham Village Hall, Jean Smith will present “Norwich Strangers”. Tickets are £2·50, pay on the door and there will be our usual raffle and refreshments at very reasonable prices. Many may think they know everything about the “Strangers”, but I am confident you will learn much more and perhaps appreciate the difficulties experienced by 16th century refugees escaping persecution in their own countries, both Dutch and those who were French speaking known as Walloons. You may question whether they were made welcome but will need to attend to find out. As always, the professional presentation by Frances & Michael Holmes captivated our audience as they provided an insight into the rebuilding and transformation of our fine City between, 1945 – 1960 following, the terrible bombing raids of WW11. Factories returning back to their original use, vast housing projects with prefabs, former shops rising from the ground and rank outsiders, back then third division Norwich City Football Club beating first division Manchester City to reach the FA cup semifinals. The presentation was further enhanced by the voices of those who actually experienced life during those post-war years providing nostalgic memories for many of us and history for those younger present. Frances & Michael kindly donated their fee to a charity of our choice and on this occasion the committee chose the campaign for Harry Deeba. Please don’t forget to take away our calendar of events for 2019, like us on facebook or visit our blog on, taverhamhistorysociety.wordpress.com. TAVERHAM BAND

This really was an incredible experience for the band and it will stay in our memories for a very long time. We would like to thank Fred Olsen Cruises for the outstanding hospitality and service. Thanks, also to our loyal support crew who helped everything run so smoothly. We look forward to seeing you soon. Check out our website for up and coming shows and more pictures from the cruise www.taverhamband.org Ian Colman

Well, what a time we have had since I last reported! We had an amazing experience touring the Norwegian Fjords aboard the magnificent “Balmoral”, Fred Olsen, cruise liner. Sadly, there is not enough space to tell you everything about the tour but we hope this summary gives you a flavour! We set out very early on the IC Travel tour coach heading for the port of Tyne – an early hitch involved one of our Trombone players realising his band uniform was still in the back of his car which was now heading back to his home! After few, unsuccessful calls, contact was finally made, and he was soon reunited. On arrival at port we set about loading the instruments, drum kit and percussion onto the luxury liner – a task in itself! We were soon allocated to our cabins and then set sail for a full day at sea. We were able to view the magnificent Lysefjord before dinner, followed by an evening of relaxation! Our port days included the incredible views at Bergen and the spectacular and dramatic scenery at Eidfjord. The highlights of the trip had to be the two

New Taverham Players Celebrate in Dagenham The Players certainly knew how to celebrate their 100th production, with their annual musical. This was a truly professional production. We had an evocative set and use of the LED wall, under the supervision of Keith Brickham and Chris Wright, who are truly magicians when it comes to creating the illusion of seamless set changes. Backed up by a superb technical team headed by Connor Baker and Joe Samuels getting the sound and lighting just right, they are the backstage unsung heroes of these shows. It was great to have our band back again led by Rachel Renwick and the group is so lucky to have such a talented group of musicians – thank all. Under the guidance of producer Tracy Melton the group surpassed all expectations and raised the standard over last year’s phenomenal Our House – not an easy feat. With so much talent on the stage it is hard to mention all. However, there are a few that need to be singled out, such as the comic timing of Nathan Harrod as Harold Wilson, and the truly amazing transformation of Grace Melton into the sassy Sandra, not a role we have seen before – fabulous. The three stand-out performances came in the second half with big musical numbers, firstly Ryan Aldred's emotional performance of The Letter, not a dry eye in the house. Secondly was Julie Peach who took on the role of Barbara Castle with gusto and belted out her number – such a big song, never thought it was going to end. My final mention has to be to Danielle Melton who took on the lead role of Rita and kept the whole show together, delivering a stunning performance every night – a true star turn. So if you feel you have missed out on something special then not to worry New Taverham Players will be back in December with their family pantomime “Sleeping Beauty”. We would like to thank Busseys, Norwich for their sponsorship, and all our audience members for their continued support. Chris Peach

concerts performed by the band in the ship’s packed out theatre! The shows had the passengers on their feet in appreciation, demanding “more”! Our featured soloists Richard, Becs and Becky were outstanding and the reception they were given was incredible. When Becky hit the last note of “Think of Me” the audience were clearly astounded! www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk

DRAYTON FLOWER CLUB

We are half-way through 2019 and it is proving to be a busy year for our members. The two main social items in our calendar are the Spring Dinner and the Summer Social. On a beautiful spring evening at the end of May thirty-five of our ladies enjoyed a two-course meal, once more at the Wensum Valley Golf Club. This was a very happy occasion with the usual excellent food and attentive service. The Summer Social at the end of July has caused a lot of discussion in recent Committee Meetings as we seem to have exhausted all the usual afternoon tea themes over recent years and wanted to come up with something novel. Gina, our Treasurer, seems to have found something to fit the bill as we have booked a Murder, Mystery Hour – a “Murder” will occur and from the clues given our amateur Miss Marples will then have an hour to solve “whodunit” while having tea! Sounds interesting unless you’re the victim. As for Norfolk Federation’s Centenary Celebrations, July sees the Centenary Garden Party at East Ruston Old Vicarage. There are two options for this – a daytime visit or an evening reception to view the gardens in a different light while enjoying Pimms and canapes. Our Programme for the next two months: July 12th Bec Tate “The Norfolk Milliner” Aug 9th Simon Partridge “Social History of the Broads”

After our AGM and EGM back in April the formalised business of closing the club was concluded with very heavy hearts. We were all determined that the final meeting at Drayton Village Hall in May would be a celebration of all that we stood for. As keen Flower Arrangers with a history of many festivals, exhibitions, Cathedral displays and our local Church, plus the unforgettable Gold medal at Chelsea, I Put together a very secret evening to rejoice our past 54 years. The membership AND the Committee were unaware of the programme built from the theme of our ‘Association’ - Fun, Friendship and Flowers! Past demonstrators were called onto the stage throughout the evening, to make one last display for

Photo (L to R): David Wright, Anne Bridge, Mary Daykin, Judy Barham, Bernard Collingsworth. the club. Mary Daykin, Judy Barham and myself plus the special guest, David Wright and the extra special help of my colleagues in crime, Bernard and Annette Collinsworth, set the stage with an amazing display of designs. It was, indeed, a night to remember, full of fun, full of flowers, full of memories and a fitting end to our history at Drayton. On June 15th we celebrated again, with our members and friends at Wensum Valley Hotel and Golf Club, with a buffet lunch and a demonstration of more flowers by Alan Smith and Lee Berrill. The Club thanks Drayton Village Hall Committee for the long relationship it has had with the Hall and how sad we are that it has come to and end. We wish all the very best to our friends in Drayton and Taverham and, no doubt, we will be bumping into you at times. Anne Bridge, Programme Sec.

Prospective members may visit for a month or two without commitment, so if you wish to join us on the second Friday of the month in the Old Hall, Taverham Village Hall, Sandy Lane from 7:30pm until approx. 9:30pm you will be assured of a warm welcome. Our monthly Lunch Club meets regularly at Wensum Valley Golf Club, Beech Avenue on the Thursday of the following week.

THORPE MARRIOTT VILLAGE HALL Thank you to everyone who came to our Spring Fayre on 28th April. We are now in a position to replace the tables and chairs at the hall, so look out for the upgraded facilities later this year. Our next fundraising event is the popular Quiz and Chips Night in October.

Norwich Community Choir leader attends Royal Garden Party

THE NORWICH ELECTRONIC ORGAN & KEYBOARD CLUB

www.norwichcommunitychoir.co.uk Meg Turpin, musical director of Norwich Community Choir, was invited to the Queen’s Garden Party on Wednesday 29th May. Meg was nominated for this honour to recognise her ‘services to the community’. Meg set up the choir, over 10 years ago, to bring people of all ages and backgrounds together to sing – in doing so creating a sense of community and enhancing people’s health and well-being. The choir is open to anyone who loves singing - there are no auditions. Meg also brings Millie, her Registered Therapy Dog to the choir to provide additional companionship for anyone who needs it. Norwich Community Choir has supported the local community in many ways, big and small, since 2008. They’ve sung at events as diverse as summer fetes, St Andrew’s Hall Open Christmas, care homes, Lord Mayor’s procession and the Bishop’s Open Garden fundraisers. Through holding concerts and supporting other’s fundraising events, they’ve raised money for many local charities including Norwich Door-to-Door, Norfolk Blood Bikes, EACH and Norfolk Age UK. In 2018 alone, it raised over £4K for Nelson’s Journey. Meg was accompanied to the Royal Garden Party by Kyanna Sutton, a regular soloist at the choir. Meg said “It was a great honour for us to attend the Queen’s garden party at Buckingham Palace last week. It was a shame the whole choir could not attend with me, as everyone who has taken part in our performances or made new members feel welcome in our choir has contributed something to the local community.” Norwich Community Choir is always happy to sing and can provide a small or large group of singers, depending on the venue/community event in question. If you’d like the choir to sing at your event, fill in an enquiry form on the choir website or contact Meg directly (or for more information) 01603495062 or meg@norwichcommunitychoir.co.uk

We meet on the last Tuesday of the month at Drayton Village Hall, with entertainment from top professional musicians. Starting 7:30pm, there is an interval with refreshments and raffle, finishing 10:00pm. No extra membership fee, entrance is £6 at the door. Tuesday 28th May - Matthew Bason After a frustrating journey from Kettering with seven diversions along the way Matthew arrived with his Roland Atelier AT350c organ, Yamaha P102 piano, Weltmeister accordion and Yamaha speakers and very quickly had our feet tapping with his very entertaining programme and lighthearted banter. The whole evening was one of musical contrasts from the moment Matthew announced ‘’tonight you are getting the full works’’ and despite the fact he was suffering with ‘man flu’ his obvious natural talent shone through his very agile fingers, feet and excellent singing voice. Matthew certainly uses his set-up to the full - not only did he showcase how an electronic organ can be completely traditional as in Herbie Hancock’s Watermelon Man, making skilful use of the drawbars, or in orchestral mode as in an impressive symphonic arrangement of the 2nd movement of Grieg’s Norwegian Dance Suite and Schubert’s Marche Militaire, or almost up to date with Ed Sheeran’s lovely ballad Perfect, but also using the on-board technology to record his own backing tracks for singing and accompanying his live playing on the piano and accordion. The vocal selections from Oklahoma and Javert’s song from Les Miserables were particularly outstanding as were the solo piano pieces ranging from the beautiful Dream of Olwen to a very fast boogie woogie, plus ‘a feline selection’ along the way. We will certainly be booking this very versatile entertainer again. Tuesday July 30th - Andrew Nix Andrew is another very popular organist on the circuit, currently touring with the Roland Atelier AT900c. He is a favourite with our audience and we look forward to an evening of all types of popular music mixed with his own brand of Yorkshire humour.

NORWICH HARMONY Calling ex-members! Ladies - did you ever sing with Norwich Harmony? Did you know we are celebrating our Ruby Year in 2019? We are inviting ex-members back for a reunion with tea, cake and song! The date is Sunday 28th July. The time is 3pm. The location: Lionwood Infants School, Telegraph Lane East, Norwich NR1 4AN Pen Robinson, PRO, Norwich Harmony.

You can tell that spring has arrived from the increased activity at the Bird Club. A group met at Sculthorpe Moor where Nigel Middleton led us on a Woodcock walk in far from clement weather. We began with excellent home-made soup served in a hide while we waited for dusk and then were rewarded with several views of Woodcock flying and calling overhead. Later an even more intrepid group gathered at Cantley Beet factory, an unlikely birding site. It rained quite hard on and off. Our first bird was the real star – a Peregrine Falcon. A pair is nesting on the tallest tower and before we left we watched one settle on to what must be a clutch of eggs. A walk around the site with added views over the marshland at the east end delivered a full range of warblers and at least 6 Whimbrel in an adjacent field. A 6:00am start was necessary for the dawn chorus walk at Pensthorpe. Here the damp and cloudy weather didn’t put anyone off and the rain waited until they were walking towards the café for a lovely cooked breakfast – the main draw of this event? Highlights included Firecrest, Sparrow hawk and Garden Warbler, with Nuthatch, Treecreeper and Woodpeckers in the woods and Little Ringed Plover, Pintail and both Reed and Sedge Warblers around the scrapes. Gary Prescott, the ‘Biking Birder’, who cycled to every RSPB and WWT reserve in the UK in a single year, gave us a talk. At the same time he was amassing a record number of bird species seen in the UK by bicycle raising thousands of pounds for those organisations. His very entertaining talk was certainly a bit different, he even had us singing ‘Bring me Sunshine’ before the tea break! Currently he spends much time in Peru, where he is involved with a charity helping disadvantaged young people. The second half of his talk was illustrated with photos of beautiful Peruvian birds and some of the young people who have gone on to university. Indoor meetings, Thursday 7:30pm at Great Witchingham Village Hall, Lenwade: 18th July – Our Place by Mark Cocker. Tickets – see the website. 8th August – Members social evening, visitors are welcome. Field trip: Saturday 6th July – Dragonflies at Upton Fen.
