TAVERHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN

taverham village hall news

www.taverhamplan.co.uk

The Taverham Neighbourhood Plan is your community-led document for guiding the future development of the parish. It is about the use and development of land over the next 20 years. As we aim to have the Plan finalised, approved and adopted early next year, we are looking towards Taverham in 2040. We’re in the final stages of drafting the Plan. It will be previewed at the Taverham Fayre on 29th June. Our major exhibition is on 4th July at the Village Hall. Residents will then have until the end of August to comment on it. The Neighbourhood Plan can’t stop development, but it can influence key elements such as the provision of housing, community facilities and the environment. This is achieved by developing a set of local planning policies. These policies are to shape and guide planning decisions in Taverham. The following are some of the policies being proposed:  Development that caters for a wide range of housing types which enables a mixed and inclusive community and meets local needs will be supported.  New housing should be located to avoid sensitive landscapes, wildlife habitats and the River Wensum flood plain.  Footpaths and cycleways created in new developments, should connect to village services and existing routes, and form part of a coherent network in and around the village.  Developments which would have an unacceptable and adverse impact on the landscape or character of an Important Public Local View will not be supported. We have identified views of: St Edmund’s Church from Taverham Road and Sandy Lane, the Wensum Valley from Penn Road, and Scotch Hill Woods from Victoria Road as Important Public Local Views. But have we missed one? Please let us know. You can email taverhamplan@gmail.com A well-written Neighbourhood Plan is the opportunity to make a difference.

www.taverhamvillagehall.yolasite.com I would like to apologise to all hirers and visitors who may be inconvenienced during the New Taverham Players production in May. This longstanding arrangement requires some regular events and activities to be relocated or cancelled. However, it is only for a week in May and a week in December and as it is appreciated and welcomed by so many residents well worth the disruption caused. Please be assured we value all hirers equally and thank you for your patience and understanding. The fundraising team will be manning the Village Hall stalls on the field at the Taverham Hollywood Fayre and look forward to seeing you on the day. And for those who would like to escape the sun, noise and activities can enjoy the refreshments in the Main Hall run by Brenda Clarke and supporters. Remember all fundraising proceeds will go towards the refurbishment of the main toilet facilities.

We now have an assortment of plants available each week, and garden produce should be appearing soon. We have a variety of crafts and greetings cards for sale – you might find some unusual ideas for gifts. There is also the usual assortment of baked goods, preserves and eggs. Visit us on Friday mornings between 8:30 and 11:00 am in the Old Hall at Taverham Village Hall. NOTE: We will not be open on Friday 28th June as we shall be having a stall at Taverham Fayre on Saturday 29th. Any enquiries phone Jeanne Webb on 01603 744243 Carol Haines

The Steering Group wishes to express condolences to David Wilson’s family and friends. David, who died at the end of April, was a founder member. He cared deeply about Taverham and his knowledge will be much missed. 5

EASTER EGG COMPETITION RESULT “Thank you” all who took the trouble to enter May‛s Competition. I hope it has given you an insight into our new website and all that it offers. Congratulations! to the winner Lynne Allsop (see photo). She along with all the entrants found the egg on the Catton Print advertisement. Unfortunately there can only be one winner. This entry caught my eye: My 8 year old daughter took great delight this morning in the task I set her, to find the time of the Plant Sale. As well as this she spent a good 10 minutes opening each advertiser and reading them out until she found what she was looking for.... which to my surprise was an Easter egg! She (Sienna) would like to enter the competition and her answer is: Catton Print. Many thanks, and may I say the website is super, easy to navigate and easily accessible. Regards, Emma.

HARRY DEEBA – successful result! Congratulations to all those fantastic people who gave up their time and organised events which raised a considerable amount for Harry‛s fund. Congratulations also to those who donated through the various ways available. It just shows what can be achieved when a community pulls together. This is clearly a fantastic area and we should be proud of it and what we have achieved. The following photos were taken at a Fund Raising event for Harry.

TAVERHAM and DISTRICT LIONS CLUB

TAVERHAM HISTORY SOCIETY

Sometimes the club has to join up with other clubs in the local area if a project is too large for us to tackle on our own and that has been the case with a request from the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital. Their representative for charity support, Louise Cooke, requested help with an ECG machine for the Jenny Lind ward as it would enable quicker diagnoses on site rather than having to go to the main cardiology department. Therefore with the help of Sheringham, West Norwich, Norwich Alpha and Attleborough Lions Clubs we were able to raise the funds and at the presentation our club’s president, Sue Howes, can be seen in the centre of the photo immediately behind one of the nurses. Nearer to home we are supporting a request from staff at the John Gale Court nursing home for help with the purchase of a Defibrillator and we have made the final donation that takes them to their target. We have a very organised social programme and recently a hardy group of us walked part of the Wherryman’s way at Reedham and enjoyed lunch at the local pub.

On Wednesday, 19th June, 7:30pm, Taverham Village Hall, Barbara Miller will present “Thank you so much – a look at Norwich charities”. Tickets: £2·50, on the door and there will be our usual raffle and refreshments at very reasonable prices. Discover where to find the tombs and stories of local philanthropists and those who were treated at Lazar House founded in 1119 by Bishop Herbert de Losinga and how it evolved over the years treating lepers, aged, poor and the sick. Vanessa and John Trevelyan were very impressed by the level of support for their presentation on Kett’s Heights in April. We not only discovered this location has one of the best views of our fine city but also the history of what existed on this ancient site containing the remains of a medieval chapel built by Bishop Herbert de Losinga to replace one of several demolished during the building of the Cathedral he also founded. And, what some may describe as the unfortunate outcome for Robert Kett, hanged at Norwich Castle to the area known as Kett’s cave, which does not actually have a cave, through to “The Nest” football ground of NCFC when supporters would sit on the cliff edges of the former chalk works watching the match, no health & safety in those days. Please don’t forget to take away our calendar of events for 2019, like us on facebook or visit our blog on, taverhamhistorysociety.wordpress.com. Should you have a question or wish for further information about the society and its activities you are welcome to email us @ taverhamhistorysociety@yahoo.com Bill Warnes, Chairman.

TAVERHAM DAY CENTRE The Day Centre is partly funded by NCC Adult Social Services payment for their referred members, but most of the income is from the charges paid by the self-funded members. Recently we received a generous grant from a small national charity resulting from an application made by a staff member. We have also received another donation made by the family of recently deceased member. The money will be used to provide something extra for the members which could not be funded from the general account. The photograph is of members enjoying an outing to the Brick Kilns Restaurant, Little Plumstead. If you need to contact the day centre please phone 01603 865839 on a Tuesday or Thursday. TAVERHAM YOUTH CENTRE www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk/youth-centre Hello Readers, We hope you are well and enjoyed the May half term. In April we continued to prepare for the Summer Fayre. We made Easter baskets and chocolate crispy cakes to take home; a couple of our older member’s made some for a local school cake sale the following day . We consulted with the members on what activities they would like this term and a few teams participated in the St George’s day Quiz. We will be selling raffle ticket on behalf of Taverham Fayre to cover the cost of our pitch. If you would like to buy some, please pop in to the Youth Centre during any of our opening hours. Lucy (one of our young members of staff) has gained her Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award through volunteering at the Junior Youth Club. Lucy had been a member for several years, returning later as a young member of staff. She gained various new skills, self-confidence, a sense of responsibility and work experience to add to her C.V. Well done Lucy The first session is FREE for new members then £1 entry thereafter. This includes access to/use of all the facilities (pool, table tennis, Xbox, WII, air hockey, table football, tuck shop) and free refreshments. We welcome all young people regardless of ethnicity, ability or religious/social background. Please be aware that for the Wednesday club; we open on a first come first serve basis, the limited number will depend on how many staff we have in that night so please wait with your child until you know they are signed in. Once signed in they are not permitted to leave the boundaries of the club which only includes inside and the immediate supervised vicinity outside. On the Tuesday and Friday night clubs we are only responsible for the member once they have signed in for the evening and are within the building. They are welcome to come and go as they please during the session, but we are not responsible for them once they are outside the building or over the park as we cannot supervise this activity. If you would like to get involved or any other details about our projects, please contact Kerry at kjyouthwork@hotmail.co.uk or call/text on 07887 950002 Kerry Johnson

TALGA Flower Power

www.roundwood-bowls.co.uk

Our A.G.M. on the 26th April brought the Autumn Winter season to a close. An evening to celebrate the highs and….the shorts, with the Men’s A team winning its league

In recent years the food supplements industry has become a multi-billion pound business. It is based on the premise that we are missing vital vitamins and trace elements from our diet. We are encouraged to pop a pill just to be on the safe side. While some may be providing essential products such as cod liver oil (given the decline in oily fish in our national diet) etc. many others can be found naturally in a diet which contains flowers and growing shoots. Eating flowers is not just the prerogative of the wealthy and the most obvious example is the humble cauliflower. The clue is in the name! The white curd of the cauliflower will produce shoots and flowers before setting seed to produce the next generation. All that the plant needs to produce that seed is stored in the curd. There are also other good examples. Purple sprouting broccoli comes in various varieties which may produce the sprouts in autumn or in springtime. However, the one I like is ‘Rudolph’ which was planted last spring and started cropping in July. It produced several pickings each month and was finally grubbed up in mid-April to make way for beetroot in a four year rotation. This year’s crop is sitting in my greenhouse waiting for some decent growing conditions to arrive. The sprouts are smaller but with production over a 9 month period it is a really useful addition to the diet. Picked fresh and simply steamed for a few minutes it loses none of the vitamins and trace elements locked up in the flower bud. It also makes an appearance in the occasional quiche. Other plants such as asparagus also produce vitamin packed shoots. The spears of this plant will produce a large frond and the female does flower though the flowers are very small and green. These flowers will produce small cherry like fruits which are packed with seeds. and promotion to the Norfolk 1st Division, and the Ladies’ A team securing a matching promotion, some serious pride. Well done both squads! Both B teams performed creditably

and just as importantly, enjoyed their season. Nearly 3000 league games, about 1000 roll-ups, and still time for casual play, Club and County matches, practice and coaching. A very full season. Our social scene was busy throughout, with sell-out support for Roger’s quizzes, good Bingo nights, our annual coach trip to the World Championships at Potters and some serious partying at Christmas. Membership stands at a five year high, and whilst delighted with this, we can take more, and would love to be cheering some youngsters. Always more to be done here. Summertime, Easter, and the outdoor players scent grass and stride away, but the club runs all year round and the summer leagues will begin and the roll-ups never stop. Quieter but very much still running, in fact an ideal time to join and be coached! In closing we lose our long serving (7 years) Men’s Secretary, Robin Clitheroe - adieu - and so many thanks, and our very capable Chairman for the last 2 years, Chris Binns, who stands down having handled all the change of the last year with some unflappable poise, and to whom we also say “thank you and well done”. I cannot let this report finish without a tribute to Pam Bassham who has faithfully posted a monthly review for Roundwood Bowls for 7 years, come sun, come snow, come muse or no news, come deadline.....for as long as I can remember. From all the Committee who did not have to think, draft, post, thank you. And to all our members, new and old, the game goes on, so good luck, good line and great length. Bob Daykin. 13

TAVERHAM FAYRE

Taverham WI

I am sure you are all currently putting the finishing touches to some great outfits and ideas for an attractive stall to make this a colourful and fantastic family event. By popular demand we welcome back Joe Palmer, performing more of those memorable songs during two performances in the main arena. In addition to the full programme of impressive demonstrations performed in the arena and the numerous fun activities on the field, this is also your opportunity to find the local group or activity showcased at this popular family Fayre. Not forgetting the many craft stalls within the Hall where you can appreciate the skill involved in producing that great little gift you have been looking for before enjoying a quiet cup of tea, coffee or a light snack in the indoor tea shop. There is still time to volunteer for car park duties on the day, if you can help please contact us using the email address below. Thank you to all our sponsors for their support and remember you are not just having a fun day out with family and friends but also supporting local charities and organisations. For information regarding a stall please email; taverhamfayre.stallholders@gmail.com Should you have an idea, wish to offer help or simply make contact, please email; TaverhamFayre@gmail.com Like us on Facebook. Bill Warnes, Committee member

Each year all WI’s are given the opportunity to vote on a series of Resolutions drafted by members to choose one or two to go forward to the National Meeting in June. The two Resolutions chosen nationally this year are to “Halt the Decline in Local Bus Services” and “Don’t Fear the Smear”. We will report on the result in next month’s issue. This subject will then become a national campaign for the WI. Many of the draft Resolutions this year were health or environmentally based and in Norfolk the result was first the Resolution to “Halt the Decline in Buses” and second “Trees - Improving the Natural Landscape“. I think we take our trees for granted, enjoying them mostly and getting annoyed with them when they drop their leaves inconsiderately and growing taller and broader than we would have liked but how important they are to us. Ridding the air of carbon dioxide, providing habitat for creatures great and small who we need for the smooth running of our natural environment, providing shade, soaking up excess water and generally just looking effortlessly lovely! We are so lucky here in Taverham to have so many of them and people willing to give up their time and energy to look after their welfare throughout the parish. So it seems only right that the retention and planting of trees forms part of our Neighbourhood Plan. A representative from the Committee has been to Taverham WI to speak to us and the members were concerned that the replanting and replacing of trees in any development was included in the final plan. So you can see that as well as the laughter and cake, outings and events we give our time and attention to matters that concern us all. If you would like to be part of the very broad spectrum that is the Women’s Institute then please be assured of a warm welcome. To end on a sad note we were very sorry to learn in April of the death of one of our founder members, Ruth Mary "Robbie" Roberts. Robbie was truly a character and one of a kind! She still attended our monthly meetings and usually had something pithy to say about the proceedings and certainly enjoyed a dance at our Christmas meeting, her smiling face and lively conversation will be truly missed Our Programme for the next three months: June 14th Norman Howell "Medical Detection Dogs" July 12th Bec Tate - The Norfolk Milliner August 9th Simon Partridge – Social History of the Broads Janet Colbert, taverhamwi@yahoo.co.uk

James Electrical and Property Services www.jameselectricalnorwich.co.uk or 01603 339066

Taverham resident James Cameron has recently undertaken a new career, based in Taverham and surrounding areas. James was a Royal Marine Commando for 14 years until he was medically discharged. From there he was a professional golfer and then trained as a City and Guilds qualified carpenter, working in designing and installing kitchens (with a brief detour into insurance for a while!). Last year though he decided to train as an electrician also, to meet the need he could see for a one-stop service for home and business electrical and maintenance projects. He is now a NICEIC qualified and registered electrician and last summer opened his own business, James Electrical and Property Services Although he has taken on many large projects in the last few months, such as the complete re-wiring a house and several full kitchen renovations, James prides himself on always making time for the small jobs for local residents that sometimes have trouble finding someone for, e.g. installing a new a light or fitting an oven. James loves going out and interacting with his customers and feeling the satisfaction of a job well done at the end of the day. In his spare time James loves travelling to Disney parks with his girlfriend and playing saxophone in a professional big band in Norwich.

Prospective members are able to visit for a month or two without commitment, so if you wish to join us on the second Friday of the month in the Old Hall, Taverham Village Hall, Sandy Lane from 7:30pm until approx. 9:30pm you will be assured of a warm welcome. Our monthly Lunch Club meets regularly at Wensum Valley Golf Club, Beech Avenue on the Thursday of the following week. 17

FACING IT TOGETHER

LIB-DEM DISTRICT COUNCILLOR My name is Caroline Karimi-Ghovanlou. I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I was recently elected as Broadland District Councillor for Taverham North. I have been a member of Taverham Parish Council for 18 months and throughout this time have enjoyed being involved in this beautiful parish. I have lived in Taverham for 12 years, been married for 40 years with 3 grown up children and 2 beautiful grandsons. I worked in the building trade, retail and the NHS. I decided to take on this new venture after a lot of consideration and conversations with my family... their support was paramount as I knew I would need to dedicate a lot of time and perseverance to do this thoroughly. I have many frustrations about the lack of support for families like mine covering the young, old, commuters and disabled. I want to meet residents to hear their frustrations. As a District Councillor I can’t change the world, but I can listen and help and most importantly I want to help. Over the next few weeks I intend to set up ways of communication. I have already set up a Facebook page for residents. For anyone without Facebook, my email address is below and will be in the Newsletter every month. I am also proud to be a member of the local SNAP (Safer Neighbourhood Action Plan) Group; we liaise with partners such as the police which is important in tackling issues such as anti-social behaviour and drugs. Dealing with people from all walks of life I hope will help me with the challenges I need to face as a councillor. I know it will be a challenge but hopefully with YOUR help, together we can continue to improve our wonderful community here in Taverham. I look forward to meeting you around the area. If you have any concerns or issues, please email me at Caroline.broadlandlibdems@gmail.com via my Facebook page Caroline Karimi-Ghovanlou or 07762879018

WVBS

THE NORWICH ELECTRONIC ORGAN & KEYBOARD CLUB

A small group of members met in the Asda Car Park, Great Yarmouth, not for their weekly shop but to explore Breydon Water at high tide. A few species were seen from the Car Park including Common, Herring, Black Headed and Lesser Black Backed Gulls, Goldfinches, Pied Wagtail and two Linnets flying over. The walk took us under the main bridge for about 300 yards to scan the water and marshes. Some of the highlights seen were several Snipe feeding in the water’s edge, Avocet, Little Egret, Curlew, Pintail, Meadow Pipit, Reed Bunting, Yellow hammer, Shelduck, Black Tailed Godwits and Buzzards. After exhausting the area, the eager birders made their way back to their cars to travel further along the estuary to Burgh Castle. No luck with Bittern, but male and female Marsh Harrier, Sparrow Hawk, Kestrel, Water Rail (heard only), Cormorant, Common Sandpiper, a distant Greenshank was heard calling and we heard and saw our first Chiffchaffs of the spring. It has been a long time since we've birded Burgh Castle and we had forgotten just how beautiful the view point overlooking Breydon Water is. It's well worth taking a look. A total of 63 birds were seen. A Muntjac, Peacock, Tortoiseshell, Comma and Brimstone butterflies added to the total. A few of us had to leave by early afternoon but some birders went elsewhere for the afternoon. Note that we have a special indoor meeting coming up in July. Mark Cocker will be speaking, following a Fish and Chip Supper at Great Witchingham Village Hall. Please see the website for details of how to obtain tickets. Future events: Indoor meetings are held on Thursday evenings at Great Witchingham Village Hall, Lenwade, at 7.30pm. All are th welcome (£2 for non-members). 20 June – Dragonflies and Other Wildlife by Pam Taylor. Field trips: Saturday 22nd June – Dersingham Bog for Nightjars; Saturday 6th July – Dragonflies at Upton Fen. For more details and information see the website or contact Sue Gale – wvbs.publicity@gmail.com

We meet on the last Tuesday of the month at Drayton Village Hall, with entertainment from top professional musicians. Starting 7:30pm, there is an interval with refreshments and raffle, finishing 10:00pm. No extra membership fee, entrance is £6 at the door.

Tuesday 30th April – Claudia Hirschfeld We were looking forward to world-renowned international organist Claudia Hirschfeld’s first visit to our club and with the help of her 3 – manual Wersi Sonic she certainly impressed our audience which had attracted enthusiasts from far-afield and had almost filled Drayton Village Hall on this occasion. Starting off with Herb Albert’s very jaunty Tijuana Taxi Claudia then took us north to Blackpool for both a traditional and modern version of I Do Like to be Beside the Seaside, up to Scotland for a haunting Skye Boat Song and then to warmer climes for a suite of music from The Pirates of the Caribbean. Claudia has recorded many CDs, her latest being a collection of Spanish music so we were treated to several of these tracks including History of Love, Valencia, Viva Espania, Villamartin (one of her own compositions) and the ethereal and beautiful Recuerdos de la Alhambra – the orchestration of each tune capturing the very essence of the country, including brilliant replication of Spanish guitar styles. There were several well-known classical pieces, a tribute to her close friend the late orchestra leader James Last and many up-tempo toetapping numbers prompting Claudia to show off her ‘dancing on the pedals’ technique. Claudia wound up the evening with an exceptional arrangement of The Dambusters March and an encore of You’ll Never Walk Alone. Tuesday June 25th Nicholas Martin B.E.M. Nicholas is a very popular organist on the circuit playing all types of popular music and a favourite with our audience. Do come and join us, you will be very welcome. Pam Barnard – Secretary, 07786 445605 A very big thank you to all who came to the charity concert, £630 was raised for Nelson’s Journey, Musical Keys and Drayton Village Hall Kitchen fund. 21

Malcom English: Supersonic Photographer

Wednesday 1st and 15th June

At their May meeting at Costessey Park Golf Club, members were fortunate to have as their speaker Malcolm English, ARPS. Malcolm has been photographing aircraft for over fifty years as a freelance writer and photographer and former Editor of AIR International, one of the world’s leading aviation magazines for enthusiasts and professionals. Malcolm has flown in ninety different military aircraft types in service with the air arms of eleven different countries. In his illustrated talk, he described the thrills and challenges of photographing aircraft as diverse as the 1910 Bleriot monoplane and the supersonic McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle fighter. Most of us have seen pictures of military aircraft in action but very few have seen pictures taken from the “hot seat” – the hot seat being that of the pilot, the operator controlling the umbilicuslike boom during in-flight refuelling or the daredevil photographer hanging in a net alongside an aircraft in flight to capture the action as another flies past. At times it was easy to forget that these beautiful pictures were of war machines: a Phantom jet climbing majestically and vertically, the sun glinting on its wings, an English Electric Lightning catapulting forward on‘re-heat’, photographed from the cockpit of an aircraft sitting just thirty feet from its tail! It took a description of the rigours of ejector seat training to remind us of the business that these people are in! Members were delighted. Thanks Malcolm. Roger Hinton.

5 Free Ways to Have Fun with Your Dog in South Norfolk Britain is a nation of dog lovers and as such, it is unsurprising that many of us lavish our time, energy and money on our canine best friends. It’s important to remember though that you don’t have to spend a fortune to have fun with your dog! Below we list 5 ways in which you can spend quality time together, in addition to the usual walks and cuddles, without breaking the bank. 1. Turn everyday items into dog toys One man’s trash is his dog’s treasure! Why not have a sort out and see if you have anything that could be made into a game for you and your dog to play? For example, an old muffin tray can be made into a fun treat finding competition, by placing tennis balls in the cups. Check out this article www.countryliving.com/uk/create/craft/how-to/a2554/easy-diy-dog-toys-using-household-objects/which gives instructions on how to make some fantastic DIY dog toys. Always ensure that any materials are safe for your dog and that play is fully supervised. Enjoy - what could be more fun than a free game of Tug-O-War? 2. Make your pooch Instagram famous Everybody nowadays seems to be ‘chasing the gram’, so why not your pooch? Creating your dog’s very own Instagram account is a fun way to spend time together. Posting photos is a great way to share what you love about your dog with others. We’re sure that your best friend will not protest too much about going on doggy adventures in beautiful locations and being snapped enjoying their favourite tasty treats. Insta-famous dogs such as Crusoe the Celebrity Dachshund even have their own merchandise and some get paid for creating content for brands. 3. Visit historical sites Why not learn about the past with your favourite pooch? A search on the English Heritage website reveals 70 free, dog-friendly places to visit. The National Trust is also keen to welcome more dog walkers and has fabulous places such as Caistor St Edmunds Roman Fort on offer which are free to visit, with just a car parking charge. 4. Spare 2 minutes to help Why not make a difference with your dog and help rid your favourite beautiful places of litter and plastic pollution? Take your dog on a lovely walk and spare just a few moments of your time to do a #2minutebeachclean or #2minutelitterpick. Small acts such as this make a big difference when everyone gets involved! 5. Have a four-legged friend to stay If your dog is sociable and loves to play but you just can’t commit to owning a second one, there is a Barking Mad solution! Barking Mad South Norfolk, a service which arranges holiday care, is searching for more dog lovers to offer a temporary holiday home for friendly dogs. Host families care for dogs in their own homes, at a time to suit them, with 24/7 support and administration and insurance taken care of. Helen Tyler of Barking Mad South Norfolk said: “Caring for a holidaying dog is a fantastic experience, not only for the human host, but also for their resident dog! We have many host families with a dog of their own and they just love having a new friend to play with”. If you feel that your dog would love to have a temporary playmate, Barking Mad can be contacted on 01603 340595 for more information. Barking Mad is part of the Franchise Brands plc group of companies and is the UK’s favourite dog holiday company, as verified by TrustPilot. Contact Barking Mad at www.barkingmad.uk.com to find your dog’s home from home today. www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk
