JEAN BAKER

Taverham Surgery

I am sad to report the recent passing of Jean Baker. Jean was for many years a respected and reliable distributor and deliverer of the Newsletter. Never afraid to give her views she kept us on our toes and it was a sad day when she moved and retired. Our thoughts and prayers go to her family.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT FLU CLINICS The flu is not a severe cold. It is a completely different virus that attacks your immune system, leaving you vulnerable to other more serious illnesses. If you will be aged 65 or over by 31st March 2020 or if you suffer from one of the following Chronic Diseases: Diabetes, Chronic Heart Condition, Respiratory Condition (including Asthma), Chronic Kidney Disease or have lowered immunity due to steroid medication that you are taking or are undergoing cancer treatment or you are currently pregnant or if you are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person who may be put at risk if you fall ill, and/or if you are in receipt of Carer’s Allowance, you will be entitled to a free flu vaccination. The vaccine does not contain any live flu viruses so it is impossible to catch the flu from this vaccine. We have now received our vaccine delivery dates and intend to run clinics on:

Dear Editor, In the Taverham Newsletter for July 2016, three letters concerning the hazards to cyclists and pedestrians were published, together with a statement by the police as to the legal situation about riding on the foot way. It was followed by the editorial comment, ‘I feel this subject has just about reached a conclusion.’ Oh, would that it had. The paths clearly marked for both pedestrians and cyclists were the main subject then discussed. However, apart from the exception of some very small children learning to cycle, a reminder is necessary about the prohibition applying to the riding of cycles on paths not so marked. This was forcibly brought home to me in the early afternoon of Thursday 15th August, at the point where the footpath of Rossons Road turns into Roedich Drive on the even numbered properties side. An adult female cyclist illegally riding on the path only avoided running into me because I have reasonably fast reflexes. May I stress this fact – neither of the footpaths on Rossons Road are authorised and marked cycle paths. The dangers to pedestrians continue to multiply everywhere. To unauthorised cycling we may also add vehicles parked on the footpath in such a way that mothers pushing baby buggies and wheelchairs are obliged to divert sometimes into the road. By a seemingly inexorable ratcheting-up of dangers, that have now continued for years, many pedestrians may now see themselves as members of a disadvantaged majority. ‘Reached a conclusion‘? - I can only conclude that I have no wish to be a serious accident victim due to illegal cycling on the Rossons Road footpaths. I imagine my neighbours feel the same. Yours sincerely, P.C., Taverham

OVER AND UNDER 65’S Saturday 12th and 26th October

A clinician will be present at both clinics. How to book your appointment: Please call the surgery on 01603 867481 to arrange an appointment. Bookings can be taken each day after 11:00am. Alternatively you can book your appointment via the NHS app and online. Before booking an appointment please check you are eligible as we will be unable to administer this if you do not fall into the above criteria. Please note these clinics are age specific due to different types of vaccines for different age groups. For updated information regarding our flu clinics please go to our website www.taverhampartnership.co.uk

TAVERHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN

taverham village hall news

www.taverhamplan.co.uk

www.taverhamvillagehall.yolasite.com

The Taverham Neighbourhood Plan is your community-led document for guiding the future development of the parish. It is about the use and development of land over the next 20 years. As we aim to have the Plan finalised, approved and adopted early next year, we are looking towards Taverham in 2040.

As part of the recent summer consultation, the draft Plan was sent to various statutory agencies and organisations including Broadland District and Norfolk County councils, the Environment Agency, Natural England and Historic England. The steering group has been pleased with the responses and the additional advice provided. Broadland District Council officers commended the steering group on a very positive and well-written Plan. It was clear to them that a great deal of work had gone into the Plan’s development, not least the amount of community engagement and evidence gathering activity. Norfolk County Council welcomed the recognition that new housing development would put pressure on existing school places. Officers also noted the draft Plan’s support for improved school provision. The Environment Agency was very supportive of our policies about green spaces. In addition, the Agency highlighted the need to reference sustainable drainage and flood risk. All responses from these agencies and organisation are being considered together with those from residents. Our aim is that during December, the revised Neighbourhood Plan will be with Broadland District Council for checking, formal consultation with the agencies and independent examination. The local referendum enabling residents to vote on the final Plan would be held next spring. We are always happy to hear from you about Taverham’s future taverhamplan@gmail.com A well-written Neighbourhood Plan is the opportunity to make a difference. We hope that you will take this opportunity. Your Neighbourhood, Your Plan

The Coffee Mornings held on the third Tuesday of the month continue to be a huge success and offer a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and neighbours. Make a note in your diary now to rekindle those old acquaintances and form new friendships. By the time you read this hopefully you will have had the opportunity to see the fantastic improvements made to the ladies’ toilet facilities providing a clean and spacious environment. The refurbishment was not without its difficulties causing a little delay before the finishing touches and decorating could get underway. You will also have noticed the entrance foyer has been redecorated and I would like to remind you all that fixing any form of promotional material to the walls, windows and ceilings is prohibited. It takes a considerable amount of time and hard work for our fundraising team to raise funds for such improvements and we are proud of the high standard of our Village Hall, please help us by observing our rules and respecting these superb facilities. The Village Hall Committee apologises for any inconvenience caused during these improvements. I will keep you posted shortly with our next challenging and exciting project for 2020. You now have the opportunity to turn those preloved items into cash by having a stall at our ever popular Tabletop Sale on Saturday 12th October, 12:00 - 2:00. Don’t miss your chance to have a table at the Christmas craft and gift fair on Saturday 9th November, 10:00 - 2:00. As you will know tables book well in advance so don’t waste time thinking about it contact the secretary, Jo Dye, without delay. Bill Warnes, Chairman, TVH Committee

Thank You! Wow, what lovely people live in Taverham! Thank you so much to all the local residents who donated to my friend Karen’s fundraising to help her get the lifesaving operation she desperately needs that is not covered by the NHS. A very generous local resident donated a substantial amount of money. This money along with all the other fundraising events her much loved family and friends have done, has given Karen the opportunity to book the surgery in Barcelona. To read her full story go to: https://www.gofundme.com/f/mx83y-cervicalinstability?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=socia l&utm_campaign=fb_u_g

Dear Readers, This is the story behind my Half-marathon fundraiser to raise awareness of Sepsis… If you could spare anything and donate, that would be very special and much appreciated. Here is my fundraising page justgiving.com/fundraising/UpYoursSepsis Last summer my Dad died from Sepsis suddenly and unexpectedly. I still can’t believe it. I've heard Sepsis referred to as 'The Silent Killer', and that's exactly what happened. On the Sunday we had a very normal day; Dad went out for his usual bike ride in the morning, did his usual garden chores in the afternoon, ate dinner and relaxed with Mum in front of some TV in the evening - all very normal. However, the following day was not normal... We were in the ICU unit at hospital, wondering why we were here, and how…. Our super fit Dad, always conscious of exercise and diet - in a matter of hours was now lying on a hospital bed being stripped of his armour by Sepsis. One by one Dad’s organs were being replaced by life support machines, until it reached the point where the Machines could not support anymore… and there was nothing more anyone could do… Dad would be so annoyed that he was taken from us in this way, at only 64 too; especially as he was close to meeting his daughter’s first born, and seeing his 5 other grandchildren grow up. This is my story - it's a harsh one; and this is me doing my small bit (by running this half marathon) to raise awareness of this shocking disease. 1000 people die from Sepsis every month in the UK, and we know very little about it. To You: If you could donate, please go to my fundraising link at the top of this article - that would be greatly appreciated. If you are unable to donate, would you please help raise the awareness of Sepsis and Share this article, talk about Sepsis - as we actually need to get on top of it! To Businesses: Any businesses donating a minimum of £25 can have their logo printed on the back of my T-shirt while I run the half marathon around Snetterton. Please let me know before 1st November as this is when I'm getting my Tshirt printed. Thank you for reading. Michael Haddon, Newsletter Web Manager, mike@toppixel.co.uk

th

PEACEFUL FEET Hi my name is Samantha; I had been working in Taverham as a Veterinary Receptionist for the last 14 years and thoroughly enjoyed it. Then last year with the big ‘50’ looming, I kept thinking there must be more, I wanted to make a difference. I like to call this my ‘Midlife Realisation’ Whilst scrolling through Instagram ‘Jackie Hamilton School of Therapies’ happened to pop up! That was it, what better way to help people than to Relax them with Reflexology. I thoroughly enjoyed the course, it was very in depth, I had to complete an Anatomy & Physiology exam, case studies and finally completed well over 100 treatments. Then after a nerve racking practical exam, I found out in June I had qualified! I have a keen interest in Nutrition and have followed a plant based diet myself for the last 3 years. I am also interested in Stress Management, Meditation and Living Mindfully. I see this as just the beginning of my Reflexology journey, if you have had reflexology before or you would like to see how it could help you, then please contact me on the details below, or visit my website for more information. TAVERHAM YOUTH CENTRE We hope you enjoyed the hot summer this year and looking forward to October half term In August there was no clubs open so nothing to report on our members activities. Although we would like to inform you all that; the Friday club has been temporally closed until further notice and unfortunately due to over subscription, we are not accepting any new members to the Wednesday junior club at present. We are looking at the possibility of opening another junior club to meet the demand so watch this space! The clubs opening times can be found in the Village Hall listings (term time only). For new members the first session is FREE then £1 entry thereafter. This includes access to/use of all the facilities (pool, table tennis, Xbox, WII, air hockey, table football, tuck shop) and free refreshments. We welcome all young people regardless of ethnicity, ability or religious/social background. Please be aware that for the Wednesday club; we open on a first come first serve basis, the limited number will depend on how many staff we have in that night so please wait with your child until you know they are signed in. Once signed in they are not permitted to leave the boundaries of the club which only includes inside and the immediate supervised vicinity outside. On the Tuesday and Friday night clubs we are only responsible for the member once they have signed in for the evening and are within the building. They are welcome to come and go as they please during the session, but we are not responsible for them once they are outside the building or over the park as we con not supervise this activity. If you would like to get involved or any other details about our projects, please contact Kerry at kjyouthwork@hotmail.co.uk or call/text Kerry Johnson on 07887 950002.

At the end of August, the scouts spent some time

camping at Gilwell, The National Scout Hut HQ near London. After a long and tiring day setting up camp, the scouts are all fed, washed up and enjoying various card games within their patrols. Everyone’s awake and enjoying their bacon and egg sandwiches. The first fire was lit by 7:30! The scouts had a go at making and paddling Coracles, followed by some swimming games The activities have been a leap of faith, zip wire and raft building, which of course contained the obligatory swim! 11

I believe firmly that NCC is improving, but still has to do better in the reduction of bureaucracy, process and procedures and focus on FRONT LINE service delivery to us, its customers. I am YOUR representative on NCC NOT a delegate. If you require any help or assistance when dealing with NCC or BDC, or you need to report anything related to NCC don’t hesitate to contact me, or any of your Taverham Team, we are here to help. I am happy to come to any Taverham Club/Group or Organisation (by arrangement) to talk to members about NCC and the roles and responsibilities of Councillors. 01603 754148 (answer phone), 0787299753 or stuartmclancy@hotmail.co.uk

Councillor Stuart Clancy’s County and District Report. Since May my current roles at NCC include member of the following; Development Committee, LEP Local Transport Board, Norfolk Waste Partnership, LEP Skills Board, Single Use Plastics Members Group, ESPO - Norfolk Board, Police and Crime Panel, and Norwich Western Link Members Working Group - Chairman, Norfolk Apprenticeship Champion. During the past few months I have been assisting residents in their dealings with NCC including pursuing problems and issues they have had with both Adult and Children's Services. I have been in regular contact with the Police in Taverham, including meetings and follow ups, to reduce the impact of the poison Drugs in our Community, specifically in relation to children and young people. I have been encouraging the Police to be proactive in pursuing any person who is pushing drugs in our area, as drugs are the cause and effect of a high percentage of crime and anti-social behaviour. I encourage residents to report any suspicious behaviour (anonymously if you wish) which they think may be drug related to the police. I have also been dealing with Highway related issues including Potholes, NDR Safety, signage and road markings issues, Overgrown Hedges and Road Safety issues specifically around the entrances of Ghost Hill First School and The Junior School. As NCC Apprentice Champion I have been working towards ensuring our young people are made aware of the excellent opportunities Apprenticeships offer young people from Level 2 to Level 7 Master’s Degree Apprenticeships which, Subject To Employment, can offer savvy young people the opportunity to obtain a degree without debt. I will be pushing Taverham High School to provide more in-depth information to both Students and Parents on the opportunities Apprenticeships can afford young people. I am proud to Chair the Norwich Western Link Working Group. Now that a preferred route option has now been announced, Option C, I will be working with others to reduce the height of the bridge, and try if possible to take the route a little further out, thereby further benefiting our area. At all times I will be pushing the delivery team to deliver quality engineering solutions in consultation with pragmatic wildlife and ecology groups to ensure and improve our living environment, without detriment to Wensum Valley. I will report further in detail as the project progresses. www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk

TAVERHAM HISTORY SOCIETY The Annual General Meeting of the Taverham History Society will be held at Taverham Village Hall on Wednesday 16th October at 7:30pm. This will be followed by a short compilation of archive films of people and places in and around Norfolk. Free entry and raffle and refreshments are optional. Don’t miss this opportunity to find out more about your History Society and our planned events and activities for 2020. Last year you all welcomed and appreciated similar archive films and it is hoped you will also find these equally enjoyable, lasting almost one hour we will conduct the official business as quickly as possible. At the time of going to press everyone had yet to receive the interesting and I am told entertaining presentation by Mike Wabe entitled “Witches & Witch Hunting in East Anglia”, more next month. We are all looking forward to meeting Phyllida Scrivens presenting “Lady Lord Mayors of Norwich” on 20th November, please make a note now for what I find hard to believe is our final event of the year. Please don’t forget to take away our calendar of events for 2020, like us on facebook or visit our blog on, taverhamhistorysociety.wordpress.com Should you have a question or wish for further information about the society and its activities you are welcome to contact us by email taverhamhistorysociety@yahoo.com Bill Warnes, Chairman 13

NORTH DISTRICT COUNCILLOR’S REPORT School Uniform Bank: It’s been a hectic couple of months for me and the team with help from the community; we have managed to supply uniform for 55 local children, with donations from over 200 families. Our Winter Campaign will start during the October half-term to help with warm coats, school clothes etc. for the cooler days. If you have anything suitable, please hold on to it for now. Recycling Centre: I recently attended a tour of the Recycling Facility at Longwater with Tony Adams. Veolia processes 300–400 tonnes of recycled rubbish every day from Broadland. Once sorted and baled, it is sold to facilities in the UK and Europe. No rubbish goes to landfill; ordinary household rubbish is burnt to produce electricity. Broadland has one of the highest rates for recycling; from 8-9% in the late 1990’s, to about 47% today, but we still need to do more. One statement I came away with is that ‘something is only recyclable if there is a market for it’. The whole issue about plastics is somewhat confusing; yes, we need to reduce our use, but they are one of the most recyclable items being processed and there is a big market for it. I was completely blown away by the scale of the operation and left with a great deal of respect for the people who work there. It is a noisy, dusty and hard job sorting our rubbish; we can certainly help them by making sure we are doing our part to sort our household bins. Remember, everything should be CLEAN, DRY and LOOSE Taverham Litter Pick: We had an amazing 28 volunteers on the last litter pick in August in Thorpe Marriott. In one hour they collected 15 bin bags of rubbish, weighing 74 kg. We are so proud of all our volunteers who give up their own time to keep Taverham looking clean. All our litter picks are sponsored by local companies and the money raised will be used to provide training opportunities for local unemployed residents. If you want to get involved, please get in touch. Cllr. Caroline Karimi-Ghovanlou Next Councillor Surgeries at Taverham Library – 17:15 to 18:45, Friday 18 October & Friday 15 November Contact: Cllr.Caroline.Karimi-Ghovanlou@broadland.gov.uk

IRRESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERS / ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

Having lived in Taverham for over four decades, I’ve seen many changes that are not necessarily for the better. Fewer people taking responsibility for their action/inaction… as rules and laws appear to fade away with little enforcement or consequence. My pet hates: (1) Souped-up cars tearing through Taverham (2) Litter, broken bottles, drug use, vandalised trees in Spring Plantation (3) irresponsible dog owners and regarding this I’m talking about individuals with no control over their dogs and take no responsibility for their dog(s) behaviour. They don’t care if their dogs bark at you or your dog, and make little attempt to control theirs when they attack your dog. To highlight these issues, my own dog has been attacked twice on Marriott’s Way and more recently on Taverham Village Hall Playing field. On Marriott’s way, my dog was attacked twice by dogs belonging to the same owner (black shepherd and two yellow lab mixes) and on Taverham Village Hall Playing Field by a French Bull dog. In all cases my own dog has been under control, and I’ve had to physically intervene to try and prevent their animals from biting mine. In each case and what is perhaps surprising - is that when I have voiced my real annoyance, their owners have attempted to threaten or intimidate. I would urge anyone who has experienced similar problems to report these to the police, as under legislation dogs are deemed to be out of control if:  it attacks someone’s animal  the owner thinks they could be injured if they tried to stop a dog attacking their animal Anyone who owns a dog that they cannot be bothered to train/control should at very least have their dog muzzled and kept on a lead in public. My own dog apart from being my best friend is a very valuable asset to my business and hobby (my last dog represented the UK in World Championship competition), so the last thing I need are vet bills or out of control dogs changing my dog’s attitude for the worse by being attacked. TALGA While eating things fresh and in season is great, the opportunity to preserve the delights of summer is too good to miss. There have been days recently when our kitchen has smelt like a jam or pickle factory depending upon what is being processed. July sees the beginning of the raspberry harvest and this continues through until late autumn, with picking happening at least twice each week. The season is extended by having both summer and autumn raspberries. Along with the raspberries we have two loganberries which have a shorter season but they play a very important part in the jam making. Logan or Tay berries are a cross between raspberries and blackberries and have a real flavour enhancing property. The strategy in the past was to have a big jam making session, that has now changed and the fruit is first frozen and the recipe changed to low sugar jam. Raspberries and Loganberries freeze very well and if laid out on a tray with a bit of space between each berry they retain their shape and integrity. Once frozen, they can be bulked together in a freezer bag for easy storage. This gives us the option of using them for desserts or going into jam. The process only uses half the weight of sugar as fruit which is great for the waistline and enhances the flavours. Using 500g of fruit and only 250 g of jam sugar put half the fruit in a pan and squash with a potato masher. Add the rest of the fruit and warm slowly over a medium heat. Once simmering add the jam sugar and boil for 5 minutes. Allow to cool and pot into warm sterile jars. The mixture of fruit is a matter of personal choice. We made some which was 50% raspberry, 25% strawberry and 25% loganberry and the flavour was quite sensational. Homemade delights like this are not readily found in the shops, even if they begin with an H and reside in Knightsbridge. Mike Raw (allotmanteer) If you are interested in an Allotment plot and are a resident of Taverham or Drayton please contact Mike Raw at TalgaRequests@gmail.com

September is the end of our financial year so it was a month of getting the accounts finalized and audited. During October the officers have to write their reports of the year’s events that together with the financial statement are presented to the membership at the Annual Meeting in November. Present committee members consider if they intend to continue for another year and members are encouraged to join and take part in the planning and running of Taverham WI. It is the hope that from the committee there are members who are willing to take the role of the officers, President, Secretary and Treasurer. This can be daunting but with a strong committee support these can be very interesting and rewarding roles. With some members standing down this year we are looking forward to a new and exciting year with fresh ideas. Membership over the year has gradually increased, with new women moving into the area it is a brilliant way to meet and make new friends and to gain a sense of belonging to the community, I can speak from experience as I moved to Taverham from London nearly 15 years ago knowing no one and now I cannot get on to the bus without meeting a friendly face. Aside to the friendships gained it is good to take part in campaigns and events run from National WI and Norfolk Federation WI if you want to get more involved. In July our speaker Bec Tate told us how she had set up her own business as a milliner having learnt from her grandmother all things needlecraft. It is ingenious how felt can be moulded into fashionable shapes and decorated with anything from buttons to feathers. August saw us hearing about the Social History of the Norfolk Broads with Simon Partridge which set us up nicely for our planned boat trip on the Broads in September. Our next meeting: Friday 11th October: Anthony Goode ‘Three Decades of Bulbs’.

Prospective members are able to visit for a month or two without commitment, so if you wish to join us on the second Friday of the month in the Old Hall, Taverham Village Hall, Sandy Lane, Taverham from 7:30pm until approx. 9:30pm you will be assured of a warm welcome. Our monthly Lunch Club meets regularly at Wensum Valley Golf Club, Beech Avenue on the Thursday of the following week. Gina Clapson, taverhamwi@yahoo.co.uk

TAVERHAM FAYRE As you know the “Hollywood” Taverham Fayre proved to be another huge success and the Fayre Committee is already planning 2020. Even though numerous compliments were received which we truly appreciate, we are currently looking at how we can build on this success and would welcome your feedback via our email address below or through a committee member. The Annual General Meeting of the Taverham Fayre Committee will be held on Tuesday 12th November, 7:30pm, Suite 2, Taverham Village Hall. Your committee is looking forward to receiving your comments as together, we can all contribute to ensure this traditional family event enjoyed by so many is even better in 2020. Should you have an idea, wish to offer help or simply make contact, please email; TaverhamFayre@gmail.com Bill Warnes, Committee member 17

TAVERHAM TABLE TENNIS CLUB Numbers at the Friday Club evenings have improved recently. This is not really a surprise with (at the time of writing) the new Table Tennis season just days away. The ‘A’ Team in Premier ‘B’ have a full September – four matches in as many weeks. In contrast the ‘B’ and ’C’ teams play just two matches and one of these will be against each other! As the ‘D’ team will have some of the Club’s more elderly players in its side, quite rightly it will have a gentler introduction to the season, one match in Division 2A, albeit against last year’s runners-up. Hey Ho! Hopefully those teams entered for the Handicap Cup will get the first rounds out of the way. And with the summer slowly coming to an end weather conditions should prove more agreeable for Table Tennis; hot and humid doesn’t help the overweight and those aged over 70 years and wanting to play! The Club meets on Friday evenings. Please contact Dennis Calver on 867924 for actual times. John Vaughan, Chairman Taverham TTC.

www.roundwoodbowls.co.uk The season’s shift is more pronounced and the stuttering steps of September’s start, with the full weekday league programme, change to the confident canter of the whole shebang, and our full A/W programme is under way. So just what is added to the menu? Our Sunday Village League takes the hand brake off and slips into first gear, and we open our rinks to non-members. Club matches take over Saturdays. Mornings for the Ladies A & B, afternoon for the Men’s matches. The A teams open their campaigns with the Ladies hosting Wymondham, 12th,10:00 a.m., and our Gents welcome County Arts, 5th, 2:30. Well worth watching, well worth supporting, both now playing in Norfolk Division 1- it doesn’t get much tastier. The bar is open, the seating free. Our Ladies B follow the A with Dereham visiting at 12:00, so the rinks will be well warmed, and our Men’s B team takes the stage at Pentney on the 5th. Always fun to visit Pentney with its Country and Western club and unique décor. (A hint, the loos are designated Fillies and Stallions –so…yeah…different). That’s not all. The County knockout competitions loom large with the Yetton and Denny Trophy competitions hitting the rinks on the 5th and 19th. Again good viewing if you can make it. Probus show their quality every first Thursday in the month. A morning session, all male. Why? Is there no Ladies equivalent? The social scene ramps up and Roger hosts our quiz on the 11th. Best to book early, we tend to sell out, with a 7:00 start, fish and chips at the break and prizes for the best table and runners-up. As, by deduction, it’s obvious, if one table wins, sixteen don’t, so most of us are there for the crack, the laughs, the heckling, and the beer. You chose. But who can forget Roger’s irrefutable, heart-warming, adamantine placement of Edinburgh just off the coast of Norway? Notwithstanding, he remained unbowed, and spot on, figuratively metaphorically and geographically. As all quiz masters should be, he was, and always will be, right. Awesome. I should have reported earlier that we now have a splendid new meeting venue because in the summer and thanks to Bridget’s kind offer we changed to meeting at Wensum Valley Hotel and Country Club. With the availability of the hotel’s bar and other facilities our meetings are becoming a much more sociable occasion and certainly we can treat our guest and visitors to a much more hospitable welcome. Talking of guest the club now has a new membership chairman in Paul Coker and Paul is keen to encourage more of the lovely readers of the newsletter to join the club. I know that the most of the 5,000 or more readers of the Taverham newsletter appreciate the Lions and what we are trying to achieve so if you are thinking of the help you could offer then please phone Paul (860497) or Nigel Howes (861114) who can explain the purpose of the club. A group of us had a splendid afternoon in August staggering around the Chet Valley vineyard out near Loddon. The tour was conducted by the John, the owner, who gave us a wealth of information regarding the whole process and the issues faced by small micro operators. Sampling several wines accompanied by plates of cold meat and cheeses rounded off the visit.

(Your Local Gardening Club) We meet in Drayton Village Hall, Pond Lane, NR8 6PP, at 7:30pm on the first Tuesday of the month. Visitors and new members welcome: admission to include refreshments £3.

We had a fascinating basket making demonstration by Jonathon Carrie on 6th August when he made a small basket from Norfolk reeds. For 50 minutes he held us spellbound with his work and anecdotes. We all learned a lot. Our next 2 meetings on 1st October when Liz Spanton will be talking to us about Mandevilla plants, and on 5th November when Nick Bugden will be talking about general pruning so that everything can be tidy for the New Year. Hope to see you there. Peter Wrighton - Treasurer 951567

Local Dog Lovers’ Charity Partnership with Dogs for Good Transforms Lives! This October local dog sitters Barking Mad South Norwich will celebrate two successful ‘puppy partnerships’ with inspirational charity Dogs for Good, with one dog ready to be ‘matched’ with a family with a child with autism. The charity trains dogs to help children and adults with all sorts of challenges, including autism, physical disabilities, special educational needs and dementia. Every year they run a ‘Dogtober’ fundraising initiative to raise awareness of their work. Barking Mad began working with Dogs for Good in 2017, with fundraising beginning in earnest. The dog sitting network has now raised over £18,000, with incredible support from customers, hosts and friends, and is funding the training of two new assistance dogs, Prince and Wendy. The money has been raised through events such as coffee mornings, quizzes and making toy puppies out of facecloths to sell. During ‘Dogtober’ they hope to smash the £20,000 mark. Helen Tyler of Barking Mad South Norwich, said: “We are delighted to have sponsored two puppies in training who will go on to make such a life changing difference but these incredible animals are in such demand that we can’t just stop there. We’d love others to join us on our Dogtober Walk at Centre Paws on 12th October at 10am to continue the fundraising. Time after time we see the emotional and physical effects that dogs have on the members of our host community, who care for our doggy guests whilst their owners are away. These beautiful canine creatures give so much to their human companions on a completely unconditional basis. It is our understanding of the benefits of dog companionship which has led us to become official supporters of Dogs for Good.” Cathryn Simpson, Corporate Partnerships Manager for Dogs for Good said, ‘We’re absolutely delighted to be working with Barking Mad, there’s obvious synergy between the two organisations in respect of the dogs but more importantly the ethos of both organisations is closely matched.” Prince’s trainer, Mel, added: “Prince has passed his sixteen week assessment and completed early training. He will now move on to the next stage of his career and will soon be going on a first matching visit with a family which has a young son with autism.” If you would like to find out more about joining in with Dogtober, or about the Barking Mad dog home boarding service, please call Helen Tyler on 01603 340595 Barking Mad is part of the Franchise Brands plc group of companies and is the UK’s favourite dog holiday company, as verified by TrustPilot. WVBS

www.wvbs.co.uk Over the summer WVBS branched out and learned about dragonflies. An excellent talk by Dr Pam Taylor was followed by a field trip to Upton Fen. Unluckily it was a cool, wet morning which is far from ideal for dragonfly watching, but we still managed to find 10 species, five each of dragonflies and damselflies. The first was a newly emerged Southern Hawker and, because it was still drying its wings, we were able to inspect it really closely. Other highlights were Norfolk Hawker, our special local dragon, and Four-spotted Chasers The other special is the Nightjar, and we had a lovely day out exploring Holme Dunes, where we earned our fish and chip supper, followed by an evening at Dersingham Bog. The afternoon provided a good list of bird species including the Little Terns breeding on Holme beach and a lovely view of the threatened Turtle Dove to finish. We had also been treated to some close encounters with at least 5 species of orchid. After said supper we had quite a long wait and it was not until about 9:30 that we heard the first churring of a Nightjar. We were then treated to some wonderful views of the birds, flying really close to us as they hunted for moths. One female hovered only yards from the group. Another recent highlight was the meeting when we welcomed Mark Cocker, the celebrated naturalist and author. He not only gave an excellent and thoughtful talk about conservation and the state of the natural world but also joined in the sociable part of the evening and was happy to talk to members. Future events: Indoor meetings are held on Thursday evenings at Great Witchingham Village Hall, Lenwade, at 7:30pm: 17th October – Norfolk Bat Project by Stuart Newson of the BTO. Field trips; Saturday 26th October – North Norfolk. Sunday 24th November – Stubb Mill for raptors and cranes For more details and information see the website or contact Sue Gale – wvbs.publicity@gmail.com

FACING IT TOGETHER The FIT Club is run fortnightly on Thursdays at Drayton Village Hall from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. for widows and widowers. If you are lonely then please come along for a friendly chat and refreshments. Try your luck with our raffle and enjoy the entertainment, talks and day trips out.
