I am a Taverham resident who has four children, I work fifty hours a week and my husband has two jobs. I am supported by fantastic grandparents. So, on my day off it would be great on a summer’s day to hang out my washing but no can do someone keeps having fires this is at 9:40 in the morning not only does it make my washing smell it comes into my house so I have to have my windows shut! I have been to this particular house on numerous occasions as I know this isn’t even household waste which is being burnt but I’m at the end of my patience please in the Newsletter could you put the guidance in about bonfires I know there’s no law but as a resident of Taverham I’m sure this is anti-social behaviour. TAVERHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN

www.taverhamvillagehall.yolasite.com

www.taverhamplan.co.uk

The Taverham Neighbourhood Plan is your community-led document for guiding the future development of the parish. It is about the use and development of land over the next 20 years. As we aim to have the Plan finalised, approved and adopted early next year, we are looking towards Taverham in 2040. The consultation on our draft Neighbourhood Plan has finished. Thank you to everyone who responded online or filled in a response form at one of the four community locations. All responses will be considered by the Steering Group during September. The revised Plan will be submitted to Broadland District Council for examination and referendum, most likely next spring. If voted for by residents, it will become part of the statutory planning policies for Taverham. As the Plan can’t stop development, a few have questioned whether it will have any impact. Although the Plan is still draft, the Parish Council were able to refer to it in discussions with the developer of the land at the corner of Beech Avenue and Ringland Road. This area had received outline planning approval before the first Neighbourhood Plan consultation. The draft Plan has policies related to type and design of houses, residential parking and open spaces on housing developments. For example, the Plan supports innovatively designed houses with high levels of sustainability: developments with a mixture of housing type to meet local needs; adequate off street parking for residents and visitors; front gardens, soft welllandscaped boundary edges and accessible open spaces designed for a range of age groups. All of these have arisen from our consultations, so reflect the wishes of the Taverham community. The evidence from elsewhere in Norfolk is that prospective developers are keen to see Neighbourhood Plans and work with local communities, through the Parish Council, to ensure that what is proposed enhances existing provision. We are always happy to hear from you about Taverham’s future taverhamplan@gmail.com. A well-written Neighbourhood Plan is the opportunity to make a difference. We hope that you will take this opportunity. Your Neighbourhood, Your Plan Chris Wilson-Town, TNP Steering Group

Our fundraising team stalls at the Taverham Fayre reported superb support from Fayre goers in raising funds for our latest project and would like to send a special thank you to, AC Leigh, for their financial assistance towards the activities provided on their stall. Fewer than usual visited the indoor coffee shop run by Brenda Clarke and her team of supporters primarily due to the very hot weather as the food offering was just amazing thanks to those loyal bakers who donated such fine cakes. The fundraising team and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee members attending and all the family and friends who gave their time (and muscle) in erecting and stocking our stalls as without your support the excellent results would have been difficult to achieve. As you read this, the refurbishment of the main toilet facilities will have started and the committee look forward to upgrading yet another facility at the hall. Redecorating will continue through to early September and will include the main entrance foyer. These improvements further enhance the superb facilities on offer at Taverham Village Hall for all to enjoy. If you are looking for a venue either as a regular hirer or for a family function I am confident you will be impressed by the value, variety of rooms and facilities available.

Hello Readers,

TAVERHAM YOUTH CENTRE

We hope you enjoyed the summer holidays and are not too tired from all the extra activities the summer has to offer. In July we celebrated our success of the Fayre and enjoyed being presented with the shield again with our club name engraved on it, some young people took a selfie with the shield! The Taverham History society also gave us a golden Oscar to complement our efforts this year – Thank you . The members also enjoyed; an American themed night with quiz, bunting, flag and hot dogs, make your own banana smoothies, make your trifle and a final session with a Norfolk theme (almost to coincide with the newly created NORFOLK DAY 27th July). The young people tested their knowledge of Norfolk with a quiz and learned some new information/surprising facts of Norfolk. Our food that night was all very local produce. Don’t forget our club/s are now supporting the Hallswood animal sanctuary and the Hogmedods hedgehog support by collecting empty crisp packets which they recycle for cash. If you would like to recycle more feel free to add to our collection during opening hours. For the clubs opening times see the Village Hall listing inside the back cover. For new members the first session is FREE then £1 entry thereafter. This includes access to/use of all the facilities (pool, table tennis, Xbox, WII, air hockey, table football, tuck shop) and free refreshments. We welcome all young people regardless of ethnicity, ability or religious/social background. Please be aware that for the Wednesday club; we open on a first come first served basis, the limited number depends on how many staff we have in that night so please wait with your child until you know they are signed in. Once signed in they are not permitted to leave the boundaries of the club which only includes inside and the immediate supervised vicinity outside. On the other nights we are only responsible for the member once they have signed in for the evening and are within the building. They are welcome to come and go as they please during the session, but we are not responsible for them once they are outside the building or over the park as we cannot supervise this activity. If you would like to get involved or any other details about our projects, please contact Kerry at kjyouthwork@hotmail.co.uk or call/text on 07887 950002 Kerry Johnson

TAVERHAM AND DISTRICT LIONS CLUB The last BBQ was held at the Middle School for year whatever!!….the year going on to The High School and mums and dads. What a very polite bunch of guys and gals they were, really lovely kids. Now I’m not one of the chiefs in the club but I do have to thank those members who attended the BBQ because we started at 35°C and that was before the gas fires had been lit! Still on the subject of BBQ’s some of the members enjoyed a very pleasant evening at Carrow Yacht Club where you took your own meat and the host provided everything else including a bar on site. I did say some but my good wife and I did not!! Armed with M & S Rib eyes we set off for the venue. Could I find it? NO! I found the Redwell Brewing Taproom and that looked lively and a friendly guy directed us down Whitlingham Lane to the Rowing Club but that was the wrong side of the Yare so after two failed attempts I drove home. On a more sensible note I received this lovely letter from Sandra Barker (Head of Personal Development) at Taverham High School and it is very nice to receive this sort of appreciation. “Several years ago, the Lions kindly offered to buy some resources for our Personal Development Programme in school. We decided to buy 6 games called ‘Life Matters’ for use with our Year 11 pupils. I thought I would let you know that the games are still used at the end of the Year 11 programme as a light hearted but informative way of re-visiting issues affecting young people. They remain very popular with the pupils and I wanted to let you know that we continue to appreciate your generosity.” Lion John Paling, Contact Lion Nigel Howes 861114

HAVE YOU LOST A KEY?

SCHOOL UNIFORM BANK

Taking a stroll through playing fields behind Taverham Village Hall on Sunday afternoon 18th August we came across a brass Union Mortice Lock key. If you are the owner please ring us on 01603 867161 as we have your key. Chris and Janet Shurety

As the summer holidays are coming to an end, I’m sure a lot of parents will be stressing out on how they are going to pay for school uniforms with the new term fast approaching. This can be an expensive time for families who are already struggling with the cost of living, with the average spend on school uniform being about £150 - £200. With this in mind, I have set up a School Uniform Bank, along with some amazing community minded friends, Stacy Bradley and Diana Perry, to help families in our area who are struggling to cope. Our community has been wonderful in donating items no longer needed and some of the schools have donated their lost property. Ladies from Taverham Women’s Institute and our local church of St Edmund’s have been busy washing and ironing uniform so everything issued is clean and pressed – such wonderful community involvement! If you feel you can benefit from this service, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I must stress this is a pilot project, set up by volunteers, and is not funded by any external agencies. We are dependant solely on the generosity of residents and consequently rely on families to be honest and open in their need to access this service. We will do our best to help as many families as possible but cannot guarantee that we can assist everybody who applies, due to the amount of uniform available, but please do not let this stop you from applying. To access a ‘School Uniform Assistance Form’ please contact myself or Stacy on the contact details below Caroline:Cllr.Caroline.KarimiGhovanlou@broadland.gov.uk Stacey: stacybradley86@yahoo.co.uk Forms will also be available from Taverham Library. Cllr. Caroline Karimi-Ghovanlou – Taverham North Next Councillor Surgeries at Taverham Library from 5:15 – 6:45pm Friday 20th September & Friday 18th October.

I have been made Vice Chairman of Environmental Excellence and am Broadland’s Councillor on the Joint Working Group with South Norfolk to look at Waste Management across both Councils. It is that time of year when we announce that the 11th Marriott’s Way 10K Race is open for entry. The first 500 entrants will get a place to run. It takes place on the Sunday 6th October. Entry fee £17, of which £1 will go to Norfolk Trails to help maintain Marriott’s way. Run is AYLESHAM to REEPHAM. For more information about the Race and Entry visit: https://www.broadland.gov.uk/news/article/283/registr ation_for_the_marriott_s_way_10k_2019_is_now_ope n or phone 01603 430441. As always I reiterate the need to get your entry in early as it is always oversubscribed. Kenneth Kelly.

TAVERHAM DAY CENTRE It was unfortunate that the hot weather in July was during the week before the Day Centre closed for its summer break. We are pleased to announce that we have appointed a new member of staff to manage the day to day financial affairs of the Day Centre. Members are looking forward to visit to the Bure Valley railway on the 26th September. They will travel by coach to Aylsham for a hot lunch before taking the train to Wroxham then returning to Taverham by coach. The photograph was taken at a recent visit of the Troshers accordion band. Contact the Day Centre phone 01603 865839 on a Tuesday or Thursday. Text or phone Brian on 07543882928 at any time. Brian Wells, Chairman 9

A Brand New Church for Taverham

TAVERHAM HISTORY SOCIETY On Wednesday, 18th September, 7:30pm, Taverham Village Hall, Mike Wabe will present “Witches & Witch Hunting in East Anglia”. Tickets are £2·50 on the door and there will be our usual raffle & refreshments at very reasonable prices.

Passion Church launched on the 14th of July at Hinks Meadow Hall, Taverham. The event was well attended with over 50 people enjoying live worship and talks from Pastors Mark Baines and Stu Thompson. Affiliated with Faithlife Church Cambridge, Passion Church is focused on helping people develop a relationship with Jesus Christ whatever the starting point, believer or just wanting to know more. Lead by Stu and Hannah Thompson, supported by Senior Pastors Mark and Sherryll Baines from Faithlife Church Cambridge, Passion Church aims to blend the grace, truth, simplicity and authenticity of the early church with today’s technology to enable it to reach more and more people and share the good news of Christ in an all-encompassing way. With a strong emphasis on scripture-based teachings and sharing the full gospel in an understandable and real way, Passion Church believes it will see lives changed for the better. Both Stu Thompson and Mark Baines studied at Charis Bible College, a part of Andrew Wommack Ministries, and have a zeal for teaching truth about God’s love for people and an expectation of His direct involvement in their lives. Passion Church currently meets at 6:30pm on the 2nd Sunday of the month with the intention of increasing to fortnightly then weekly by the New Year. Stu Thompson says: “Passion Church is all about 2 ones – Jesus and you. My heart is to see lives genuinely transformed by hearing the good news of Christ. We want to build genuine, lasting friendships within the church and foster relationships with other churches and ministries, recognising we are one body. God set me apart for Passion Church four years ago and it’s been an incredible journey of growing, learning, connecting and correcting to get where we are today.” Stu Thompson, Founder and Pastor

Whatever your thoughts or beliefs I am sure the facts presented will help understand just how so many women and men were persecuted so cruelly particularly during the English Civil War with the rise of money making individuals like Matthew Hopkins. With over seventy attending we were extremely fortunate to have two presenters on 17th July when Jean Smith brought along none other than Helen Hoyte MBE, who many will remember from last year, is an authority on the Norwich Shawl Industry. Jean remained in the background as the 96 year old Helen captivated our audience with her knowledge, enthusiasm and amusing delivery, with very interesting, wide ranging facts about how, in order to fill the labour shortage following the plague, we accepted the Dutch Strangers and Walloons, albeit with a few strict rules, to ply their trade in our fine City via Strangers Hall in the 16th Century. In addition to how the Bishop of Norwich had to give up his home during the visit by Queen Elizabeth 1st and how Parson Woodforde had the City gates literally shut in his face. An early reminder that the Annual General Meeting of the Taverham History Society will be held at the Village Hall on Wednesday 16th October, 7:30pm. Please don’t forget to take away our calendar of events for what remains of 2019, like us on facebook or visit our blog on, taverhamhistorysociety.wordpress.com. Should you have a question or wish for further information about the society and its activities you are welcome to contact us by email taverhamhistorysociety@yahoo.com Bill Warnes, Chairman

TAVERHAM TABLE TENNIS CLUB

Rainbows and their leaders spent the day at Roarr Dinosaur Park. They enjoyed a stamp trail, wandering around the park playing on all the fun dinosaurs, go-karts, indoor play. They had a picnic lunch and received a medal for the trail. Over 100 Brownies, Taverham & Thorpe Marriott joined them for an activity day at Hautbois Activity Centre in June. They took part in outdoor activities such as zip wire, raft building, crafts and enjoyed a barbeque and ice cream. Guides in early May spent a night on HMS Belfast. Leaders not to be left out are going to spend a night at Pax Lodge in London in November. Over the summer holidays our volunteer leaders planned for next term and the year ahead. Guiding in Taverham only continues due to the support of our volunteers. We are always in need of new people and in particular we are looking for leaders to support Guides - girls aged 10 to 14. Apart from the opportunities you will give to girls, volunteering also gives you access to a great range of benefits - like free training and resources, as well as a fabulous members' discount scheme offering you discounts on high street brands. It's also lots of fun and an opportunity to make new friends. To find out more register your interest on www.girlguiding.org.uk/interested or contact Nina Watson – Taverham District Commissioner mrshmwatson@gmail.com

With the sun beating down outside it is hard to believe that the new Table Tennis season starts in six weeks’ time. A few stalwarts have practised on a Friday, although it has been mainly the younger ones. Two members of the ‘A’ team were sighted… on the way to the Pub!! At the time of writing we have over thirty guests here from Eislingen (in Germany) for the 40th anniversary of the Eislingen/Foxwood/Taverham Exchange. Their first full day meant a hog roast and entertainment at Foxwood hosted by Yvonne Todd. And there we were the elderly and the young, the latter with boundless energy in their toes and some of the former with walking sticks and constantly looking for the safety and security of a plastic chair. Yes the Exchange had spanned the ages. Lovely too to catch up with players one hadn’t seen for years and it has to be said, may not have recognised in another setting. Yvonne, in a rare speech, spoke warmly of the events and mad things over the forty years and spoke movingly of those players and friends and relatives who were now so sadly no longer with us. More details of the week will be included in the next edition, though I would just mention that it was delightful to see four founder members of the Taverham Club at Foxwood, Dennis and Margaret Calver, Pam Cracknell and Derek Everitt. And by the way, the club continues to meet on a Friday. Please contact Dennis on 01603 867924 for times and dates. John Vaughan, Chairman Taverham TTC.

Doggy ‘Temps’ ease Remote Workers’ Loneliness and Struggle to Unplug

Local dog sitting service provider, Barking Mad South Norwich is offering a solution to the potential loneliness and inability to switch off that can result from remote working. For those who work from home or are retired, and are spending large chunks of time alone, caring for a waggytailed companion on a temporary basis could really help overcome feelings of isolation. Helen Tyler of Barking Mad South Norwich said, “It’s like Bring Your Dog to Work Day in reverse! If you work from home we can bring you a lovely, friendly dog to care for whilst its owner is away, subject to you meeting our host criteria. We take care of everything; chauffeuring the dog to your home with all its essentials and providing 24/7 support. Caring for a friendly dog not only provides canine cuddles (far better than any virtual hug) but also the motivation to step away from your emails and take a walk.” Sarah Spendlove, an artist who works from home and hosts for Barking Mad, said: "As a host, the process has been really straightforward and well organised. I've enjoyed the companionship, exercise and everything else that comes with dog sitting. I'd definitely recommend Barking Mad to others, as it's brought bundles of furry joy into my home, and I always want to give them the best holiday full of walks and playtime!" ‘The State of Remote Work’, Buffer’s 2019 annual report which surveyed 2,471 workers, concludes: “Remote work isn’t always as Instagram-worthy as it may seem. In fact, many remote workers struggle with unplugging from their work, loneliness and communicating.” CEO of fully remote company Doist, Amir Salihefendic, also recognises the problem and said: “We need to acknowledge that isolation, anxiety and depression are significant problems when working remotely and we must figure out ways and systems to resolve these complex issues.” The community of Barking Mad host families consists of active retired people and those who either work from home or have extended periods away from work. It offers the opportunity to care for dogs in your home, while owners are away. Hosts experience all the benefits of dog companionship without any of the emotional or financial responsibilities of fulltime pet ownership. To find out more about becoming a Barking Mad host, you can call Helen Tyler on 01603 340595 or visit www.barkingmad.uk.com Barking Mad is part of the Franchise Brands plc group of companies and is the UK’s favourite dog holiday company, as verified by TrustPilot. Contact Barking Mad at www.barkingmad.uk.com to find your dog’s home from home today.

TALGA

NEW TAVERHAM PLAYERS “Sleeping Beauty”

www.talga.org

This December prepare to feel sleepy in Taverham, as a magic spell will be cast over you all that will put you into a deep sleep for 100 years. Not to worry it will only be the New Taverham Players annual family festive pantomime “Sleeping Beauty” coming to the Taverham Village Hall once again from Monday 2nd December to Saturday 7th December. It is a good old fashioned traditional story including what you would expect from Sleeping Beauty – fairies both good and evil, kings and queens, magic, a princess and, of course, an heroic prince to save the day, not to mention spinning wheels and needles, and maybe a forest of thorns – that you will have to come and see to find out. After the success and popularity of last year’s double matinee on the Saturday New Taverham Players will once again be performing two matinees on Saturday 7th December, but no evening performance. Tickets will go on sale in October, so look out for next month’s edition that will have all the relevant times, dates and prices, as well as details of how to book on line. Many thanks, Chris Peach

Tomatoes are an amazing plant and are classed as both a fruit and a vegetable. Whichever term is used, they can be incredibly sweet when eaten raw or can form the basis of a rich sauce when cooked. This year is proving to be a bumper year for me and I am growing three varieties, cherry, plum and beef. I grew the plants from seed starting in March, first in a heated propagator and then once they reached about 8cm, transplanted to small pots and kept inside until May. I then moved them into large tubs of compost in my greenhouse, two plants per tub. Due to the amount of plants, I also put a number of plants in pots outside just to see what they would do. The plants indoors have grown much quicker and have produced far bigger crops than their outside brethren. Once the fruits started to show, I started to remove the lower leaves and also any leaves that weren't directly visible to light and also pinched out the tops. Early in the growth of the plants, I would feed once a week and only water when the soil was starting to dry. Now that the fruits are growing, I feed twice a week and water pretty much every day. Next year, I shall be growing my tomatoes up a trellis. This will allow me to support the plants fully and fruits and also increase the airflow which should reduce the chance of mildew or fungal infections. Even if you aren't a successful gardener, I would highly recommend getting a couple of plants and having a go. The results are always worth it. Once you have tasted home grown tomatoes, supermarket varieties will seem a poor by comparison. It still amazes me that from a single seed, a massive plant grows covered with tomatoes which in turn contain hundreds of seeds. Johnathan Cox (trainee gardener)

Drayton Horticultural Association (Your Local Gardening Club) We meet in Drayton Village Hall, Pond Lane, NR8 6PP, at 7:30pm on the first Tuesday of the month. Visitors and new members welcome: admission to include refreshments £3.

Could you help save a life? From ad hoc help emptying collection boxes in your local area to marshalling at our fundraising events, there is always an opportunity to volunteer with the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Together, we save lives. -------------------------------------

Our two summer flower shows held on club nights in June and July, were successful and we had an excellent show of roses and sweet peas. Richard Clark of Panache Plants talked to us in July about carnivorous plants which are surprisingly easy to look after. From the tall trumpet-like Sarracenia to the Venus Fly-traps we had a fascinating insight into a part of horticulture with which most of us were unfamiliar. Richard had a good range of plants for sale and members took the opportunity to try them out – houseplants with a difference. On Tuesday 3rd September Dr Sally Francis will be talking about Norfolk Saffron and on Saturday 7th September we are holding our Autumn flower, fruit and vegetable show at Drayton Village Hall. Judging will take place in the morning and the show is open for public viewing between 2:00-4:00 pm. On 1st October Liz Spanton will be talking to us about Mandevilla so we are in for an exciting couple of months. Why not come and join us. Peter Wrighton, Hon Treasurer, 951567

VALE PROBUS CLUB

THE NORWICH ELECTRONIC ORGAN & KEYBOARD CLUB

Where’s the Evidence?

We meet on the last Tuesday of the month at Drayton Village Hall, with entertainment from top-class, full-time professional musicians. Starting 7:30pm, there is an interval with refreshments and raffle, finishing 10pm. No membership fee, entrance is £6.00 at the door. Tuesday July 30th - Andrew Nix brought along his Roland Atelier AT900c organ and gave us a very busy programme of all types of popular music, delivered with much expertise and in his usual light-hearted manner. Starting off with Sousa’s High School Cadets March he followed on with She by way of a tribute to Charles Aznavour and Russ Conway’s Side Saddle and China Tea. There was a good mix of styles throughout the evening including Dixieland, ballads, polkas and swing, with a sprinkling of Highland Cathedral, medleys of James Bond themes, Beatles, Sigmund Romberg and a few Irish tunes culminating in a fast and furious Lord of the Dance. A selection from Me and My Girl had us all singing along, a lovely medley of Disney standards followed, then Andrew finished a very enjoyable evening with an encore of sambas. Tuesday September 24th – Ryan Edwards Another return visit for this brilliant organist, playing excellent music from classical to modern and everything inbetween on his trusty Yamaha EL-900. Do come and join us, you will be very welcome.

‘Every contact leaves a trace.’ With these words, Frenchman Edmond Locard set the defining principle of Forensic Science. Our own local Locardist, Richard Hooker, regaled Vale Probus with a lively explanation of Locard’s Principle and all that follows from it: Criminals may leave traces of their presence at the scene of a crime or take away traces of the scene on themselves and it is the task of the Forensic Scientist to Detect, Preserve and Analyse this hidden evidence. Richard advised us to be wary of CSI programmes from the USA preferring the well-informed Silent Witness as a truer reflection of his painstaking work with the Forensic Service over many years. The tools of the trade include some unlikely suspects: Swarfega will cause fingerprints to fluoresce; Superglue is an aid to visibility of moist shoeprints and fingerprints under Laser illumination. Bank notes are often used for ‘snorting’ drugs and so almost all notes are contaminated. But if ‘Mr Big’ has a suitcase of bank notes, they are likely to demonstrate significantly higher levels than a random sample of notes and may contribute to the evidence against him. The perfect crime? Richard tantalised us with the case of identical twins, alluding to the part that DNA plays in detection. Members were fascinated so Richard is already invited back to continue the story. Forensic evidence may be hidden: Richard’s enthusiasm for Forensic Science is all too obvious! Graham Porter Vale Probus Club, for retired Professional and Business Men, was founded in 1998. We meet monthly for lunch and a talk and some members also join together for other activities. If you’re interested in what we do please contact our Secretary, Dan Gentle, on 01603 866441 or email: dangentle@talktalk.net Membership enquiries welcome!

DRAYTON FLOWER CLUB Our final event for Drayton Flower Club took place on Saturday 15th June at Wensum Valley Hotel and Golf Club. It was a very special event to celebrate our club and all that it has achieved over the past 54 years and to thank the members for all their support. The day started with our members and guests, being greeted on arrival by our President, Sally Addison and Chairman Linda Morgan. A buffet lunch was much enjoyed by all 100 of us and we then settled down to the star attraction of the day, Lee Berrill and Alan Smith demonstrating ‘Our Box of Delights’. Lee and Alan have visited the club on numerous occasions and it was therefore most fitting that they took centre stage for our final flower and fun packed afternoon. They created a magnificent display of beautiful arrangements and received a much-deserved standing ovation. Tea and cupcakes, with our logo of a forget-me-not iced on top, were served to complete the afternoon. Our President completed the day with a brief, but heartfelt list of “thank you’s” and the club was then officially closed. Our Treasurer, Dilys Harvey, then began the task of dealing with the club’s finances, as agreed by the membership. We are pleased to advise everyone that the four nominated charities (Nelson’s Journey, East Coast Truckers, East Anglian Air Ambulance and the Renal Department at NNUH) have each received a donation of £1,148. It is heartening to know that out of the sadness of the closure of this well-loved club, something positive has been achieved and we have been able to support organisations that the club has had great affinity with. Anne Bridge, Program Secretary, Drayton (Norfolk) Flower Club Please note: The photos on this page do not do justice to the fantastic displays – please go the Newsletter website and in the Gallery you will find several photos of the displays. www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk
