Dear Editor. Once again we would like to thank all those who supported our Christmas Lights in aid of the East Anglian Air Ambulance last year. We will be having the lights on from the 1st December to the end of the month from 4:00pm to 9:00pm, and hope to see you then. Frances and Arthur, 141 Fakenham Road.

TAVERHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN www.taverhamplan.co.uk

The Taverham Neighbourhood Plan is your community-led document for guiding the future development of the parish. It is about the use and development of land over the next 20 years. As we aim to have the Plan finalised, approved and adopted early next year, we are looking towards Taverham in 2040. The steering group would like to thank all those residents who responded to the draft Plan during the summer consultation. There were also detailed responses from Anglian Water, Broadland District Council, the Environment Agency, Historic England, Natural England, Norfolk County Council, Norfolk Wildlife Trust and the Water Management Alliance. The steering group has been pleased with the responses and the additional advice provided, some of which was highlighted in last month’s newsletter article. The steering group are making amendments to the Plan. It is a complex process and we hope to submit the revised Plan to Broadland District Council by mid-November. Broadland District Council will check through the Plan and will write to all those who responded over the summer. We anticipate that the Plan will be sent to the independent examiner early next year. Even though the consultation has finished, we are always happy to hear from you about Taverham’s future. You can drop us an email taverhamplan@gmail.com. A well-written Neighbourhood Plan is the opportunity to make a difference. We hope that you will take this opportunity. Your Neighbourhood, Your Plan Chris Wilson-Town, Steering Committee

Karen Pugh books her life saving surgery

Following a trip to Barcelona in September to meet Dr Gilette, the surgeon, Karen has been able to book the life saving surgery she needs. All going well, by the time you read this Karen will have had the surgery (booked for 24th October). The final cost of the operation came to £79,000. Karen will need one month in Barcelona until she is fit to fly home. All money raised and with the final future events already organised will go towards the surgery, accomodation, flights and allow her husband Andy the month off work to be with and care for Karen. To read her full story go tohttps://www.gofundme.com/f/mx83y-cervicalinstability?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=s ocial&utm_campaign=fb_u_g Karen is eternally grateful for every single person who has helped her to achieve this massive task raising all this money to save her life. Her friends and family can’t wait to welcome her home at the end of November, to celebrate and, for her to start enjoying life again. Many thanks, Sharron Hunt, Taverham

North District Councillor’s Report

taverham village hall news

It has been a busy month in Taverham and thankfully many issues have been very successfully resolved. One problem that does seem to keep recurring is over-hanging bushes and trees. As the growing season has virtually finished, could I politely ask residents to have a look at the boundaries of your properties and just trim back those bushes and trees that might be obstructing pavements. These can be dangerous for pedestrians and pram/wheelchair users, especially prickly bushes and overhanging branches. I have also noticed the issue of pavement parking being highlighted locally: namely cars or vans blocking pavements for pedestrians. Parking a vehicle on the pavement could lead to an offence of obstruction being committed – this could result in a fixed penalty notice being issued to the offending vehicle. Offences can be reported on the police website: https://www.norfolk.police.uk/contact-us/report-it Rule 244 of the Highway Code states, “Parking on the pavement can obstruct and seriously inconvenience pedestrians, people in wheelchairs or with visual impairments and people with prams or pushchairs.” You must also “not park opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction”. I know many of our side roads are quite narrow and sometimes pavement parking is the only way not to restrict access for emergency vehicles and rubbish trucks etc. but please have consideration for your neighbours and park responsibly, and please leave a gap equivalent to the width of a double buggy on the pavement so pedestrians don’t have to walk in the road. Let’s continue to make Taverham a lovely safe place to live; little considerations make a big difference. Cllr. Caroline Karimi-Ghovanlou, email: Cllr.Caroline.Karimi-Ghovanlou@broadland.gov.uk Last Councillor Surgery for this year – Friday 15th November 2019 at Taverham Library from 17:15 to 18:45

www.taverhamvillagehall.yolasite.com

I have recently been criticised for the dictatorial style of posters imposing certain rules when using the Village Hall for which, I offer no apology. Thanks to our hard working fundraising team and support from the management committee, a great deal of investment has been made to create outstanding facilities which need to be respected and protected. Of course accidents happen in a building that attracts so many activities and visitors but by observing simple tasks we can all help to maintain the building for much longer thus enabling us to invest more in further enhancements and rather than repairs. On a much more positive note, the Village Hall Committee has approved the next exciting project for 2020, the complete refurbishment of the main Old Hall kitchen. It goes without saying that this will be a major investment with new wall and floor coverings along with new work surfaces, storage cabinets, refrigeration and cooking facilities. This will require far more patience and understanding from hirers than any previous project, particularly those who use this kitchen on a regular basis. But, rest assured, this will be another improvement well worth the effort and temporary inconvenience to provide a much welcome and overdue upgrade to our huge kitchen area. The committee also agreed to continue with our ongoing redecoration programme to ensure the considerable choice of facilities are maintained to the highest standard which is why Taverham Village Hall currently attracts so much interest from potential hirers. At the time of going to press you may still have a chance to book a table at the Christmas craft and gift fair on Saturday 9th November, 10:00 - 2:00, now extended into two large halls. To check availability, contact the secretary, Jo Dye (01603869316), without delay. And don’t forget to take part in the fantastic Christmas Raffle (tickets £1 from regular hirers). TAVERHAM AND DISTRICT LIONS CLUB

Please Support Sylvia Williamson’s London Marathon 2020 For The Institute of Cancer Research Fund Raising

Recently two of our members, Sue Howes and Jonathan Rackham, accompanied 66 children and parents from The Wherry School to Great Yarmouth for the annual Lions Fun Day. The Wherry School is a specialist unit teaching children with autism. Everyone enjoyed their day out especially the visit to the indoor circus at the Hippodrome. You will be proud of your local club because we managed the largest turnout and far more than the local host club, Great Yarmouth, and as a club we are pretty lucky to have two dedicated members who gave up a whole day in playing host and hostess. In the April newsletter you would have read that your Lions Club had teamed up with other local clubs to purchase an ECG machine for the Jenny Lind ward at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital that would enable quicker diagnosis on site. I am pleased to report that it is now in the ward and the dedicated children’s staff has already started to use the equipment on their patients. Readers of the Taverham Newsletter may not be aware that at the NNU Hospital there is a dedicated room for worship and we have had a request for a shoe cupboard to enable Muslim worshippers to remove their shoes and store them. It is of very little cost but hopefully it shows that we are a very inclusive club, as I believe most of our readers are. Lion John Paling Contact Lion Nigel Howes 861114

I have been a resident of Thorpe Marriott since August 2000. I am a Registered Nurse and have worked at the N & N Hospital. Currently I am a Community Matron at the Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust within the Norwich area, including Taverham and Hellesdon. I have been very fortunate to be selected for a charity running place with The Institute of Cancer Research Team for the 2020 London Marathon on 26 April. However, I need to raise £2000 to be allowed to take part. I ran the London Marathon in 1987, when I was 27 years old. But I am now 59 and have not been running regularly over the last few years, but still run occasionally, including parkruns. The main reason I have chosen to run is to raise money for The Institute of Cancer Research, and to commemorate my lovely mum who died of cancer in August 2019. The day of the London Marathon is actually the date of her birthday. My mum was diagnosed with Bile Duct Cancer in March 2019, 5 months before she died. My aunt also died of Pancreatic Cancer in 2018. My father-in-law died of Lung Cancer with Brain Mets 3 years ago. In all three cases, there was a poor prognosis, symptoms appeared late, and they had just weeks and month’s prognosis. Cancer affects everyone. We all know of someone who has or has had cancer. This is why I have chosen to run for the Institute of Cancer Research, to raise money to try and prevent or even find a cure for this cruel and devastating disease. Training and working full time as a nurse will be a tough challenge. But I will be focused on the cause, keeping the memory of my mum and the donations to help others in the future. But I need your help to raise the £2000. Please read my story and donate through my JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/SylviaWilliamson1 The money donated will go directly to The Institute of Cancer Research.

TAVERHAM DAY CENTRE

On the 26th September thirty nine members and staff enjoyed trip on the Bure Valley Railway. A luxury coach took members from the Scout HQ to Aylsham where we had a hot lunch. This was followed by a train ride to Wroxham where we were met by the coach for the return journey to Taverham. The photo is of members seated for their lunch at Aylsham station. This outing was funded by a grant from the Tony Rampton trust. We are pleased that Norwich City College has arranged for a student to have the work experience as part of her course at the Day Centre. Please note that the Centre will close on the 17th December and reopen on Thursday 2nd January. To contact the Day Centre please phone 01603 865839 on Tuesday or Thursday or phone Brian 07543882928 at any time. Brian Wells, Chairman. www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk

Supported by: IC Travel, 3-Line Electrical, Ichthyos Ltd, 101 Website Design, Arnolds Keys & First Aid At Work (Norfolk) The Sir Henry Wood Promenade Concerts enjoy a worldwide reputation for innovation and performing excellence. Over the course of the two-month season we get the opportunity to listen to world class orchestras, talented soloists, famous conductors and experience newly-commissioned music. Their enduring popularity is reflected in the many requests by local concert organisers for the Band to include these in our programmes, giving the opportunity for some uninhibited community singing and flag waving. This year on the actual Last Night we replicated the fun and games in the Royal Albert Hall with a performance to a packed audience in the magnificent Cromer Church. Once again we were welcomed by the RAF Benevolent Association in Carnegie Rooms Thetford, in conjunction with the excellent Military Wives' Choir from RAF Honington and the Thetford Players. Next up was another opportunity to enjoy splendid church acoustics this time at Blofield Church and with our Taverham Concerts having just passed we are now looking to the Christmas season! We look forward to seeing you all then.

SLEEPING BEAUTY – NEW TAVERHAM PLAYERS PANTO Well opening night is rapidly approaching – oh no it isn't, oh yes it is! Monday 2nd December sees the opening of New Taverham Players 2019 family pantomime Sleeping Beauty. Rehearsals are well under way, with scripts down by now, dance routines choreographed and costumes being fitted. All the principles are getting into character, being cheered or booed, hopefully for the right reasons, and our ensemble are bringing it all together with the group numbers. Tickets are going extremely well this year and it looks like it is going to be another sell out week, so if you haven't got yours yet there is still time. Performances are Monday 2nd to Saturday 7th December at 7:30pm nightly except Saturday when there are two performances at 12:30pm and 5:00pm. Tickets are priced at £10 (£8 concessions) and are available online through our website newtaverhamplayers.com or ring Chris and Julie on 01603 424313 and leave a message. TAVERHAM TABLE TENNIS CLUB The new Table Tennis season has begun. The ‘A’ team has got off to a flying start, played two matches, won two. They had 6-4 victories against Harriers and Falcons; Andrew Calver hit the ground running in the first match and had a maximum, and Wayne Lubbock (not exactly running, more gliding) achieved this in the second match. And in case we should forget, Andrew Parker and Eric Melvin also helped Taverham to gain the points. In Division 1 where the Club has two teams, the ‘B’ and ‘C,’ it was unfortunate that their first match was against each other. The ‘B’ won 9-1. Lewis Ross and Alex Edmonds justified their promotion to the team, winning five out of their six singles. James Ashworth saved the ‘C’ team’s blushes. Meanwhile the ‘D’ in their first outing had to play Division 2’s last year’s runners–up and lost 2-8. Chris Parker and James Austen won a singles each but sadly the more elderly representatives in the team were a little off the pace. Things can only get better! In the Handicap Cup the ‘C’ team, despite the inclusion of evergreen Jack Harrowing and the Chairman, went down 0-10 to a young Wensum team. Thankfully the ‘B’ won their match so we still have a Club interest in this competition. The Club meets on a Friday evening. Please contact Dennis Calver on 01603 867924 for actual times and dates. So if you feel like hitting a little white plastic ball about, then why not look in. John Vaughan, Chairman, Taverham Table Tennis Club

www.roundwoodbowls.co.uk November. The Hunter’s Moon of October has given way to the Beaver’s Moon of November (using the North American Indian names for the lunar cycle….of course), and we are into a fun phase. We could call it “The Knock-Out Moon” to all intents and purposes. But before we get over excited, let’s complete the review of the Club’s entry in Norfolk knock out competitions. The Ladies have two, the Yetton and Mason, different structure, but both with a split format. The Yetton has two blocks playing at home whilst two play away, and the Mason has one block at home and one away. Scores are progressively notified with a telephone link and umpires are required. With me so far? The Egham is a mixed event with two men and two ladies in each block. Obviously all members are eligible but we do try to pick the best available. As will all clubs, so the standard is high. Thus good viewing. Still with me? You are doing well. The men have The Denny and The OverSixties. Again we have the home and away concurrent play. For all these the dress code escalates to the very formal all white. All the above take precedence over any internal games and we have to plan accordingly. And have. But that’s not all. We have the opening salvoes of the Club and County knockout. Here the Club opens the lists to every club member, and the resultant competition will produce the Lady’s and Men’s Champions, in singles, pairs, threes and fours, who can then progress further in the County stages, to produce County Champions. Meanwhile for the 90% of the Club not chosen and the 80% who don’t enter the lists, life in the middle lane continues as we roll with the “Frost Moon” (alternative Indian name for Beaver Moon) and anticipate “The Moon when the wild deer shed their horns” (you got it, December). November diary dates: For all league times see website or club notice board. For Club and County first round; 13th November evening. 2nd & 16th Denny Cup & Plate, Yetton Trophy and Plate 10th & 24th Egham Trophy 1st & 22nd Mason Trophy 5th & 26th Men’s over Sixties Bob Daykin, Chairman www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk

Des showed the Beavers the range of crops being grown and harvested at this time of year and the machinery he uses to help him with these tasks. The visit included a very exciting trailer ride around the farm to see the cows, calves (and Jolly, the bull!), and then finished with an opportunity to climb aboard some of Des’s tractors. As evidenced by the broad grins (see the photos on the website gallery), all the Beavers (including the girls!) had a very enjoyable time indeed and felt privileged to be able to see at close hand what farming is all about. This farm visit linked to a bread making activity the previous week, where the Beavers cooked their own flatbread over a campfire and a traditional corn dolly craft activity using wheat and barley stems collected at the farm. TAVERHAM HISTORY SOCIETY On Wednesday, 20th November, 7:30pm, Taverham Village Hall, Phyllida Scrivens, will present “Lady Lord Mayors of Norwich”. Tickets are £2·50, pay on the door and there will be our bumper Christmas raffle & refreshments at very reasonable prices. There have been seventeen female Lord Mayors of Norwich since 1923 and I am certainly looking forward to hearing their individual and fascinating stories through extracts from her biography of the same title presented by the author, Phyllida Scrivens. This will prove to be a brilliant end to another successful year for your History Society and one you will not wish to miss. There were several in the audience startled by our presenter, Mike Wabe, on the 18th September when he loudly and forcefully suggested there were witches in the audience. However, this did not detract from the very interesting facts imparted, from the Black Death to mummified cats found in buildings. All fuelled by the invention of the printing press helping to spread rumours of witchcraft throughout the County with both men and women branded a witch and tortured into confession. An updated law was passed in 1735 which abolished the hunting and executions of witches this, in turn, was not repealed until 1951. I wonder if anyone in our audience has bottled the formula to ward off spells! Please don’t forget to take away our calendar of events for 2020, like us on facebook or visit our blog on, taverhamhistorysociety.wordpress.com. Should you have a question or wish for further information about the society and its activities you are welcome to contact us by email taverhamhistorysociety@yahoo.com Bill Warnes, Chairman

TAVERHAM YOUTH CENTRE www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk/youth-centre/

Hello Readers, We hope you are well and looking forward to the forthcoming Christmas period In September we consulted with our returning members on what they would like to do this term. The young people had some great ideas which will be used to programme into our additional activities schedule. The following week the young people enjoyed scratch art while the staff began to prepare for the next session. The last week we announced our new activity of Junior Bake off/Dec off. The young people organised their teams of 3 or 4 and made a base for their planned cake decorating competition in the coming weeks. The members will be provided with a cake and various items to decorate it with and given 45 minutes to unleash their creative talents as a team. The whole club was buzzing with chat, design and the making of their cardboard base. Almost everyone wanted to be part of a team so there was very little table tennis, pool or football played that night. Please note: The Friday club is closed until further notice. Unfortunately, due to over subscription we are not accepting any new members to the Wednesday Junior Youth Club at present. We have a waiting list of which you can join by filling in the form and returning it to the Youth Club. However, The Parish Council has agreed to fund the opening of another Junior Youth Club to meet demand. This will open on a Thursday evening 6:30-8:30pm for school years 5, 6, 7 & 8. For club opening times (term time only) see the website or Village Hall listing on page 23. If you would like to get involved or any other details about our projects, please contact Kerry at kjyouthwork@hotmail.co.uk or call/text on 07887. Kerry Johnson 15

VALE PROBUS CLUB

to a finer tilth by spring. Rough clods will not be compacted into an airless skin. Remember healthy should consist of 50% soil particles: 50% air, so compacted soil should be avoided. There is a difference of opinion over whether applying manure and other fertilisers in the winter (ready for the spring) gives much benefit. As the weather breaks down the manure the danger is that the nutrients will be washed away by the time the next year’s planting season begins. I am of the opinion that you should just keep adding it though the year. Another allotmanteer gave me the tip of diluting chicken manure in a large bucket and then adding a couple of cups to each 10l watering can. I have to say, the smell is not for the faint hearted, but the results seem to suggest it helps. Johnathan Cox (trainee gardener) If you are interested in an Allotment plot and are a resident of Taverham or Drayton please contact Mike Raw at TalgaRequests@gmail.com

Louise Chapman and her Little Gentlemen in Black Velvet Coats. Louise Chapman, Norfolk’s only Lady Mole Catcher, was the Guest Speaker at our September Ladies Lunch meeting. Formerly a drama teacher, Louise received the call after attending a molecatching course at Easton College. She has a deep respect and, one suspects, affection for Mr Mole and a profound knowledge of his lifestyle. Both the law and personal ethics mean that the moles are despatched as quickly and painlessly as possible. Her arsenal comprises just three types of spring-loaded metal trap but the real skill comes in judging which to use and where to place it. Louise’s humorous and, at times, hilarious talk was also factpacked:  There are 35 million moles in the UK  They live on a diet of worms  In June, when the soil is warm, the male goes a-courting. He can tunnel his way up to 1·5 km in pursuit of the love (or loves) of his life. The return journey is generally way too hazardous so he’ll try to find a vacated run on a new home patch.  So, once your lawn has a run system, it will thereafter be a mole-magnet!  So, when you cry ‘he’s back!’, he probably isn’t; a new interloper has taken his place  The gestation period is 28 days and the young leave the nest after seven weeks, to churn up your lawn. The youngsters aren’t yet strong enough to dig deep  So-called ‘mole deterrents don’t work! Louise was recently invited to take part in the making of a TV programme in Australia to rescue a number of protected and dangerous species; funnel-web spiders, crocodiles and Eastern Brown Snakes. In the UK, she’ll also sort out other pest problems for you; squirrels, rats, wasps and even cluster flies! Thank you, Louise, for a great presentation Vale Probus Club, for retired Professional and Business Men, was founded in 1998. We meet monthly for lunch and a talk and some members also join together for other activities. If you’re interested in what we do please contact our Secretary, Dan Gentle, on 01603 866441 or email: dangentle@talktalk.net Membership enquiries welcome! Roger Hinton

Taverham WI In early September, on a not very bright morning, 22 members set off to Wroxham for a trip along the river as far as Salhouse Broad. Luckily before long the sun decided to shine on us and showed the Broads as their best. After an interesting trip with informative commentary, we returned to Wroxham and stayed for lunch and chat! Trips like this take some organising, collecting names and payments, booking places (always subject to alteration!) and sorting out cars for transport. We are all grateful that we have members on our Committee willing to take this on. Our monthly meetings and speakers form our main focus but we also have our annual Spring Dinner and Summer Social which are always well supported. We are open to suggestions from members for outings and trips they would like to take and there are one or two (or more) in the planning at the moment. So “watch this space”. Our 2019 Programme of Speakers has been booked and looks as varied an interesting as usual. Well done Programme Ladies! In September we were sad to learn of the death of Jean Baker, who I am sure most of you will have known in one capacity or another. Jean was very much part of life in Taverham through Guiding, distributing this Newsletter, selling tickets for New Taverham Players, driving people to hospitals etc. and so much more. She had been a part of Taverham WI as a staunch committee member and had been treasurer for many years and when resigning from her committee roles she remained an active member. We were so glad that she continued to come to our meetings and events after she had moved to Dereham to be with her family. We shall truly miss her. TALGA

For those of us who grew up in the 60's and 70's, the following will make sense. "There was an allotment covered in weeds, can you dig it?"! For those of you who haven't called a doctor to mend your split sides, November is the time of year for rough digging of the allotment and applying manure to enrich the soil. By rough digging, pests (for example slugs) will be brought to the surface and will be hoovered up by blackbirds and attentive robins. Depending on the weather, an occasional dig over will help clean up a piece of ground. In fact, there is no better pest control than a small flock of birds working over the ground. Rough digging does also break up the soil. Frost will be able to penetrate all the exposed surfaces, breaking them down 17

DRAYTON HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION (Your Local Gardening Club) We meet in Drayton Village Hall, Pond Lane, at 7:30pm on the first Tuesday of the month. Visitors and new members welcome: admission including refreshments £3·00. On 3 September Dr Sally Francis, the only commercial Saffron grower in Norfolk, talked about Saffron at our meeting. Her enthusiasm and knowledge captivated us and we had a very enjoyable evening. On 7 September we held our autumn flower, fruit and vegetable show at Drayton Village Hall. 24 Club members provided 159 exhibits for the judges to assess and the standard, despite the adverse spring and summer weather, was extremely high. There was also a cooking competition and we had 15 cakes and 2 jams provided. It was good to see our new members taking part and achieve success in their first show. Mandy Plants talked to us in October about Mandevilla plants and gave us an insight into how to grow and keep a beautiful tropical plant. We were all a bit surprised at how easy it might be to do so. They also brought a very colourful array of plants to sell. The most popular plants sold were the purple Japanese Anemones!! We also presented our autumn show and annual prizes. On Tuesday 5 November Nick Budgen will be talking on general pruning and on 3 December Simon White will be giving us a picture gardening quiz. Why not come and join us?
