AUGUST 2019 VOLUME LIV No 8 www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk DELIVERED FREE TO OVER 4500 HOMES IN THE TAVERHAM AREA TAVERHAM YOUTH CENTRE The money the Youth Centre members raised at last year’s Fayre has recently been donated to two worthy causes. The members and staff voted to donate the money to a needier group rather than buy new equipment for themselves. P Nunn Installations of Taverham were so impressed that they 100% match funded, so everyone enjoyed the pleasure of giving away £200 each to the S.O.C.I.A.L. Field Youth Group and The Taverham Day Centre.

TAVERHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN

www.taverhamplan.co.uk The Taverham Neighbourhood Plan is your community-led document for guiding the future development of the parish. It is about the use and development of land over the next 20 years. As we aim to have the Plan finalised, approved and adopted early next year, we are looking towards Taverham in 2040. A massive thank you to everyone who came to the Exhibition at the Village Hall on 4th July and filled in a response form. Don’t worry if you missed it, you can read the draft Neighbourhood Plan and the supporting documents and respond online until 30th August. Copies of the Plan together with response forms are also in these locations – the Parish Council office, Taverham Library, St Edmund’s Church, Taverham Surgery, Taverham Vets and the Silver Fox café – until 30th August. We are most grateful to all these locations for hosting a copy of the Plan and supporting the village in this way. Early indications from the consultation are that there is strong support for the draft objectives and policies. There have been understandable concerns from some residents about the implications of owning property or land identified on the Nondesignated Heritage Assets and Local Green Spaces lists. These objections, together with all responses received during this formal consultation process, will be considered in September. However, there is support for such lists. One list ensures that the few properties linked to Taverham's past are recognised as being important in future plans for the village. The other, that Taverham's wooded and green spaces, whether in public or private ownership, are highly valued by the community and should not be vulnerable to unquestioned development. After this consultation, the Plan will be revised and submitted to Broadland District Council for examination and referendum, most likely next spring. If voted for by residents, it will become part of the statutory development for the area. We are always happy to hear from you about Taverham’s future taverhamplan@gmail.com. A well-written Neighbourhood Plan is the opportunity to make a difference. We hope that you will take this opportunity.

www.taverhamvillagehall.yolasite.com Many thanks to all who supported our fundraising team stalls at the Taverham Fayre, although it was an extremely hot day preliminary figures are looking very good and a full report will appear next month. As you are aware, our project this year is the refurbishment of the main toilet facilities and your continued support is much appreciated. Major building work will commence on the 12th August with some redecorating continuing through to early September. We have managed to make these improvements without the need to cancel regular hirers but have avoided casual weekend bookings. Obviously the toilet facilities will be restricted at times and the Village Hall Committee apologises for any inconvenience caused and would urge you to strictly observe any safety or closed signage. Please be patient as we continue to build on, what are already, superb facilities.

TAVERHAM HISTORY SOCIETY

OPEN LETTER TO BROADLAND COUNCIL

Barbara Miller captivated our audience in June with a superb presentation highlighting the generosity of those who donated their wealth to those in need such was their legacy many trusts continue to support those less privileged to this day, some 300 years later. We discovered that Norwich had 19 hospitals at one point which were really what we would term a hospice today and that Curfew Terrace was the furthest point of travel if you wished to return within the city walls before the gates closed. Plus, all of the names of familiar philanthropists and perhaps several of those less known, created a thoroughly interesting evening enjoyed by all. Our “Walk of Fame” game at the Taverham Fayre proved to be an “Oscar Winning Performance” with many complimenting us on the unique idea for the game and the presentation of our stall. We hope those who were fortunate to win an Oscar will display it in pride of place at home. Unfortunately we did not win the coveted John Pelling Shield this year but did win Best Dressed and I would like to thank the committee for the many hours of hard work to produce such an outstanding stall. Our congratulations go to the Youth Centre who will appear on the shield for the first time since it was first presented in 2009. Thank you for your loyal support and to the Fayre committee for organising another very successful event and arranging such fine weather. Remember we have no history event in August but please make a note in your diary now for the 18th September, when Mike Wabe will present some historical facts about, Witches & Witch Hunting in East Anglia. We will not only hear about the “witch finder general” but also the sad plight of those branded a witch through the centuries. Please don’t forget to take away our calendar of events for 2019, like us on facebook or visit our blog on taverhamhistorysociety.wordpress.com Should you have a question or wish for further information about the society and its activities you are welcome to contact us by email taverhamhistorysociety@yahoo.com Bill Warnes, Chairman

By and large we are blessed with excellent footpaths into, through and away from Taverham. But there is an exception. There being no pathway from Taverham to Ringland. The road from Beech Avenue to the green before the Swan is unlit, narrow and both curving and dropping. No one can see round the bends at half way. Yet it is a regular route, especially in the summer holidays, for the young to walk down to the river. And it is extremely dangerous. There is a good verge from Beech Avenue for the first stretch therefore a path would be sensible and simple. Thereon a permissary path could be sought through either the fringes of Wensum Golf or the Langley school and then the fields as the road drops to the bridge. It could be a delightful walk with superb views. So will Broadland have a look at this? Bob Daykin, Taverham

TAVERHAM BAND www.taverhamband.org

Musical Director - Ian Colman MBE – 01603 868680, Ian.Colman@taverhamband.org Supported by: IC Travel, 3-Line Electrical, Ichthyos Ltd, 101 Website Design, Arnolds Keys & First Aid at Work (Norfolk) After the novelty and excitement of the Band's overseas adventures cruising in the Norwegian Fjords at the end of May it was time to come back down to earth (literally!) during June and July and undertake a series of traditional local concerts. The sight and sounds of a brass band performing in the park or on the promenade at the seaside is quintessentially English even if, on occasions, the sun has gone on strike and the umbrellas have to be unfurled. We were delighted to attract enthusiastic audiences of locals and holiday makers at Kelling Heath, Waterloo Park in Norwich and Girl guides at Hautbois, rounding off July with a memorable concert in the lovely setting of Salle Church. A return visit to Kelling is in the diary for this month, together with a visit to the bandstand at Eaton Park in Norwich which is always popular and well attended, before we start turning our attention to our busy schedule of autumn concerts. It's not too early to start booking for our “home” Taverham concerts on18th/19th October! Full details in next month’s edition. Ian Colman MBE 7

TAVERHAM AND DISTRICT LIONS CLUB

TAVERHAM FAYRE

“Warmed the cockles of my heart” is not a phrase that is commonly used but two recent events brought that idiom to my mind. First our welfare chairman, David Plunkett, had a lovely letter from a lady whose husband was admitted to the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital in an emergency and on being placed in a ward was given one of the bags we provided that carry all the essentials like toothpaste, brush, deodorant etc. Secondly at the Taverham Fayre we had a surprise visit from 2 year old Harry and his mum who had recently returned from America where Harry has been having some special medical treatment. They particulary wanted to come and thank the Lions for our donation and it was really wonderful to see Harry behaving just like any other child his age. All these donations and services that we supply are thanks to the support you all give the club at BBQ’s and with the santa sleigh. With an ambient air temperature of 300C and standing over a hot BBQ made for some sweltering old fellas and girls on the Lions’ stand at another excellent Taverham Fayre. Before everyone started dripping I managed to catch a picture of three key members who are changing roles and first president Sue Howes hands over the reigns to vice president Trevor Smith whilst Lion Ujjal Kular has now been installed as vice district governor for all of east England south of Lincoln down to Essex. John Paling.

The “Hollywood” themed, Taverham Fayre, proved to be a huge success with even the weather on our side again. You were asked to make this the best Taverham Fayre to date and you did not disappoint with a greater number of stallholders creating fantastic displays and costumes with visitors joining forces to create an outstanding family event that will last in memories for many years to come. Thank you to all the groups who participated in the main arena demonstrating what excellent talent and support we have in Taverham. Also, to Joe Palmer who again gave a superb performance thoroughly enjoyed by all ages and who kindly donated the proceeds from the sale of his DVD at the Fayre towards our event next year. The photographs on the front page show just a snapshot of the many enjoying the day and I hope provides a glimpse of what you all achieved. There is a considerable amount of work that has to go on behind the scenes, possibly far greater than one day should allow and there are many family and friends of the Fayre Committee who give their valuable time to plan, create and organize the day’s activities to whom we are truly grateful as without this support the Fayre would not have been such a huge success, well done and thank you all it is much appreciated. Thank you to the mystery judge, who had the most difficult task of judging the stalls and after much deliberation, awarded the John Pelling Shield for Best Dressed Stall, to the “Taverham Youth Centre” and the Best Dressed Stallholders was awarded to “Taverham History Society”. Well done to both teams. The choice of food available was appreciated by everyone with all stalls reporting a great success including the tea room located in the Village Hall run by Brenda and her team to raise funds for the continued refurbishments of the hall. I think it is fair to say, if you did not attend what a great family day you missed and hope to see you next year. Your Fayre Committee is already working on 2020 and they would welcome comments or ideas you would wish to put forward for consideration. Should you have an idea, wish to offer help or simply make contact, please email; TaverhamFayre@gmail.com Bill Warnes, Committee member

TAVERHAM YOUTH CENTRE

Hello Readers, We hope you are enjoying the summer holidays In June we continued to prepare for the Fayre. The young people also made their own s’mores, painted ceramics as gifts for Father’s Day, had a go at the summer solstice Quiz with seasonal fruit salads and made their own Pizzas. The preparations and decorations for the Fayre have been going on since February. The young people worked hard over many weeks and made a large 2D mural of the Hollywood Hills, posters for the walk of fame, a large camera, a 6ft golden Oscar and put together a red carpet with golden cones and rope. There were many young people and staff who turned up on the day to help staff the Tombola. The highlight for us was winning the Best stall of 2019. The team entered the arena to be presented with the trophy and receive a £10 gift. In addition to this great achievement (it was only our second year) we raised a huge £380. Thanks to all the staff and young people who

August sees the completion of our “summer” leagues, and the deadline for application to join our traditional A/W leagues has slid past. But this year we are extending the menu to include an Ozzy pairs’ league, whereby the players alternate lead and skip. This is an ideal entry to league play as it encourages all the shots and the cries of I can’t/don’t/won’t play skip are forbidden. Lead, an exercise in placement and restraint, and skip (the chance to sort out what lead has done), are equally important. We would also like to have a Sunday starter’s league. Again an ideal opportunity to measure your progress with other inexperienced or new members. The end of the month is also the end of our year, so subscriptions are now due. Normal adult rate remains £60, a little over £1 a week and play time is still settled as you play, £3·50 for two hours. An inexpensive sport when all is said and done. Until renewal is complete Casual play, in leagues or Club teams, is not allowed. So renew before the 1st September please. September will also see the return to our rinks of those who forsook us for the summer, to hoof grass with outdoor clubs. They always seem a tad vulnerable as they blink under our indoor lights and adjust their shades, their lines and weight, to our less variable surface. So September is a good time to work on sucker punches and a good start to leagues. But August to complete first. Then Subs. Then we are off again. We are holding an open day Saturday 21st September for anyone to come and have a free taster. And on Sunday the 29th September we shall celebrate our Thirtieth Anniversary with a Hog Roast, free to members, £3·00 to non-members. More details in our September submission.

were involved prior to and during the day. I am so proud to be a part of these great Youth Clubs. I would also like to thank the Parish Council for providing us all with the opportunity to get involved with such positive community youth clubs and the Taverham Fayre Committee for facilitating the chance to celebrate this. “Thank you” to Tesco, Drayton for donating items for our Tombola and to Wensum Point Carpets who gave us a great deal on the red carpet. Don’t forget our club/s are now supporting the Hallswood Animal Sanctuary and the Hogmedods hedgehog support by collecting empty crisp packets which they recycle for cash. If you would like to recycle more feel free to add to our collection during opening hours. If you would like to get involved or any other details about our projects, please contact Kerry at kjyouthwork@hotmail.co.uk or call/text on 07887 950002 Kerry Johnson

TALGA

W. I.

Gardening and allotment keeping has always been a battle ground to protect your produce from the bugs and slugs. Some of the highly persistent chemicals have thankfully been removed from the armoury. Recently there has been a lot of publicity concerning the use of neonicotinoids in farming and the potential effects on pollinators. One of the products in the armoury has now disappeared. Metaldehyde slug pellets, those little blue pellets now banned from sale as of June 30th 2019. The use of any existing stock must stop after twelve months on June 30th 2020. The reasons for this are based on environmental issues with traces being found in water supplies and an unacceptable risk to birds and mammals. Alternative controls and products are based on Ferric Sulphate or Ferric Phosphate. These iron based products are deemed to be much safer. There are also other ways to catch slugs and snails. Being largely nocturnal, you usually notice the damage in the mornings when the beasties have retreated back into a damp shady hideaway. You can make a foray into the garden at night with a torch (might take some explaining to the neighbours) and pick off the beasties while they are feeding. Beer traps are also one method that can be effective. Place a smooth sided container in the ground to a depth of 10 cm with the lip of the container just above the soil surface. Half fill the container with a sweet beer. The slugs will be attracted by the sugar in the beer and the alcohol will see to their demise! Soapy water is a useful tool when trying to fend off infestations of insects. Liquid hand washing soap is one recommendation when it is diluted in water to make a two percent solution. One of the modes of action is that it breaks down the waxy coating of the insect making it desiccate and die. Mike Raw (allotmanteer) If you are interested in an Allotment plot and are a resident of Taverham or Drayton please contact Mike Raw at TalgaRequests@gmail.com You can also reach us through our website www.talga.org or drop into the Parish Council Office.

At the beginning of June, 81 WI members from Norfolk set off in two coaches to Bournemouth for the National Annual Meeting. Two members of Taverham WI joined them. We met up with ladies from all over England and Wales at the Bournemouth Conference Centre and during a full day of business the votes were cast for the two Resolutions and both were passed by an almost total majority, This means that “Don’t Fear the Smear” and “A Call Against the Decline in Bus Services” will become official WI campaigns not only for this year but for as long as it takes. The weather over the two days was kind to us so after the business there was time to take a walk in the sunshine along the sea front and find somewhere good to eat. Not easy with so many other women doing the same thing at the same time! On the way back to Norfolk we called in at RHS Wisley and a good many plants came back with us. Just another facet of WI Life! It truly does seem to have something for everyone and it was certainly interesting to meet members from all across the country. Our Programme Secretaries have booked interesting and varied Speakers for our monthly meetings with something to suit all tastes. Outside of the main meetings our small groups continue to thrive and at the time of writing this, we are finalising arrangements for our annual Summer Social, which this year has a murder mystery theme. In the next issue we will be able to tell you “Who Dunnit”! Our Programme for the next three months: August 9th Simon Partridge ‘Social History of the Broads’ September 13th Simon Kinder ‘Gresham Spies’ October 11th Anthony Goode ‘Three Decades of Bulbs’. Prospective members are able to visit for a month or two without commitment, so if you wish to join us on the second Friday of the month in the Old Hall, Taverham Village Hall, Sandy Lane from 7:30pm until approx. 9:30pm you will be assured of a warm welcome. Our monthly Lunch Club meets regularly at Wensum Valley Golf Club, Beech Avenue on the Thursday of the following week. Jan Colbert, taverhamwi@yahoo.co.uk 13

1ST TAVERHAM SCOUT GROUP

I have recently taken on the role of District Commissioner for Taverham. The post has been vacant for some time, but thanks to the support of Caroline Flatt and Chris Chapman and all the Leaders, Guiding in Taverham continues to thrive. My aim is encourage some new volunteers to join our fantastic leader team. As nearly all our volunteers work full time as well as running units it is only by maintaining an adequate group of leaders that units can continue to run. So whether you wish to help out at meetings or become more involved in the leadership teams, why not get in touch. The District has 3 Rainbow units (aged 5-7), 4 Brownie units (aged 7-10), 3 Guide units (aged10-14) and 1 Senior Section (aged 14 -25). You can register an interest in joining by logging onto: girlguiding.org.uk Units have been out and about over the last few months with a guide overnight sleep on HMS Belfast, a brownie weekend at Coltishall and many unit meetings out and about in the local community. The Brownies enjoyed a day of activities at Hautbois at the end of June and the Rainbows went to ROAR Dinosaur Park for the day. Some Guides are already preparing for a trip to Mexico in 2021; you may have seen them at Taverham Fayre. In 2018 Girl Guiding launched a new programme. Since the start of 2019 units in Taverham have started to use the new programme. Any change is challenging and feedback to unit leaders by girls and parents is always welcome. Our aim continues to be to build girls’ confidence and raise their aspirations. Our goal is also to provide a chance for girls to discover their full potential and a space in which to have fun. Two of our Beavers gained their Bronze Awards this month. Jack Starling and Zachary Loi are being presented with their award. One Saturday in June, the Beavers had a hike from Costessey followed by a camp in Taverham. “We had a long walk,” says Mark but it seems the beavers were not tired out with them waking just after 4am.... The leaders were tired!! Mark The Taverham Fayre was hot and sunny again this year. We have always made blankets, hats and gloves to keep warm those who are forced to sleep on the streets but until September we are focussing on scarves. St. Martin's Trust is going to construct a house made of scarves, (15cm x 100cm), in the Cathedral and they need lots! Some of those scarves will be black to represent those that die on our streets. The range of charities we support continues to grow and work from all over the county will be on display at a Grand Exhibition in Wymondham on the 5th October. As one of the larger groups, Taverham is organising the raffle and tombola for the event so if you have any suitable gifts to donate please get in touch. Margaret Noble, 01603 860717

TAVERHAM NORTH COUNCILLOR’S REPORT tots2teens club The summer holidays are here, and parents all over the country will be wondering how to amuse their children for the break. We are very lucky in Broadland to have the “tots2teens” club run by Broadland District Council for all children, aged 5 and over, who live or go to school in the Broadland area. Their Summer Holidays brochure has been released, and there are some amazing activities to keep the children happy over the summer,

including fun zones, sport zones, art zones, cookery, wildlife zones, technology and skill development; children can also earn credits towards their Children’s University learning passports if they have one. These all run from the 25th July until the 3rd September.

You can download a brochure from https://www.broadland.gov.uk/downloads/download/84/tots2teens_holiday_activities_brochure or give the team a ring on 01603 430525 to register for free and get more information. Broadland offers a 50% reduction on all activities for Broadland households claiming Council Tax reduction, Housing Benefit or having housing costs met through Universal Credit. Broadland Handyperson Service We all have elderly relatives or probably know someone who’s disabled, and sometimes needs a little help around the home. Did you know that Broadland District Council has a handyperson who can do small household adaptions and repairs? Unfortunately, I had to call on this service recently when my elderly aunt had a fall. The police had to gain access to make sure she was OK and the door was damaged. Thankfully I knew about the handyperson service, and he came around the same day to assess and order the parts needed. I was so impressed with the service. So who is the service for? It is for any Broadland resident over the age of 65 who own or rent their home. If they are in receipt of Attendance Allowance, Council Tax Reduction, Housing Benefit or Pension Credit, then labour is free; if not, then there is an hourly charge of £15. The householder provides the materials needed for the job i.e. a replacement lock etc. There are exceptions to the age rule for disabled residents, or registered blind, who are in receipt of Incapacity benefit, PIP or Disability Living Allowance. As well as doing basic jobs such as: - Fitting locks, security fixings and key safes - Repairing a dripping tap - Put up a shelf, fixing a sticking door or changing a light bulb - Minor decorating work - Clearing single story guttering - Fitting grab rails the handyperson can identify other measures which could make the home a safer and secure place. For more information, search www.broadland.gov.uk/handyperson or to find out if the Handyperson can help you, ring 01603 430518 or email handy@broadland.go.uk Next Councillor Surgeries at Taverham Library – 17:15 to 18:45 Friday 16th August and Friday 20th September E: Cllr.Caroline.Karimi-Ghovanlou@broadland.gov.uk / M: 07762879018 Caroline Karimi-Ghovanlou www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk

DRAYTON FLOWER CLUB

VALE PROBUS CLUB

After our May ‘cutting of ties’ with Drayton Village Hall it was not long before our ‘Grand Finale’ event took place on the 15th June. Very few members were missing and along with partners/friends we had a full house at Wensum Valley Hotel and Golf Club. The occasion commenced with a warm welcome at the entrance by Sally, our President and Linda, our Chairman and everyone was directed to their reserved tables bedecked with rainbow coloured napkins and spotty bags of garden flowers. Much chatter went on with drinks in hand and very soon everyone was tucking into an excellent lunch buffet supplied by the Hotel. After food replenishment we all sat ready for the entertainment of the afternoon. A spectacular display of beautiful floral designs decorated the staging area and more and more kept coming. It was, indeed, an exceptional climax to a fabulous day that epitomised ‘fun, friendship and flowers’! Alan Smith and Lee Berrill, our duo of demonstrators, gave us a truly wonderful ‘Box of Delights’ and received a well-deserved, standing ovation. One of our honorary and founder members, Francis, gave a vote of thanks on the club’s behalf and touched on the sad demise of Drayton Flower Club. We ended the afternoon with cupcakes, with our forget-menot flower on each one, and a nice cup of tea. We all appreciated that this event had been the celebration of all our years and with thanks to the Committee, our demonstrators, the organisation and superb staff at Wensum Valley Hotel, we had the most amazing afternoon to end on a high, the history, story, life of what was Drayton Flower Club. Anne Bridge, Programme Sec.

John Rant: The Tuppeny Railway At our July meeting at Costessey Park Golf Club, our own John Rant took us deep underground to visit the intriguingly-named Tuppeny Railway – the London Underground. Originally, a third-class ticket cost just two old pence (2d. Remember?) when the first line was opened on 10 January 1863. The idea of the Metropolitan Railway was first mooted in the 1850s. The initial proposal was for an underground road for horse-drawn vehicles, running from Paddington to Farringdon, via King’s Cross but the idea morphed into an underground railway. The initial four-mile line was formed by hand-dug, open trench (cut and cover) construction. Stations were formed using cast iron ribs to support the overlying brickwork. As the network progressed, the enormously disruptive ‘cut and cover’ construction was abandoned in favour of bored tunnels. The earliest wagons were open-topped, hauled by steam locomotives (underground, remember!) and the passengers must have arrived at their destination in a pretty grubby state and in the dark (except for first class passengers, who had gas lights!) Nevertheless, 30,000 of them experienced the new line on its first day. Electric engines were introduced at the end of the 19th century (phew). A second line from High Street Kensington to Gloucester Road followed in 1907. As the network expanded, Harry Beck produced the now-famous London Underground Map in 1933 – although it is not technically a map since it isn’t drawn to scale, but a ‘schematic’. The rest is history, with the first ‘cut’ of Crossrail taking place in 2012. Interestingly, we learned from John that modern underground trains travel at between 20 and 30 mph, depending on the line. A fascinating and all-too-brief look at the underground. Thanks John. Roger Hinton

FACING IT TOGETHER The FIT Club is run fortnightly on Thursdays at Drayton Village Hall from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. for widows and widowers. If you are lonely then please come along for a friendly chat and refreshments. Try your luck with our raffle and enjoy the entertainment, talks and day trips out. Our August meetings: 1st – David Berwick (Norwich Cathedral); 15th – David Valentine (Singer); 29th – Paul Binney (Poetry & Pictures). If you have any questions or would like to find out more information please give me a call. I look forward to hearing from you. Maureen Madden, Chairperson. (01603 868924)

THE NORWICH ELECTRONIC ORGAN & KEYBOARD CLUB

WVBS

www.wvbs.co.uk In what we hope will become an annual event the club took a stall at the Norfolk Bird Fair at Pensthorpe. 19 members took part, putting in a lot of work to man the stall and provide guides in the hides. Their efforts resulted in 13 new members signing up but also they all had a very enjoyable two days. They not only met and conversed with many members of the public but also with wildlife celebrities like Bill Oddie and Simon King. There are photos on our website. Also on the website will be found the accounts from a group of members who enjoyed an excellent holiday in Spain, more specifically Coto Donana and Extremadura. The former is an extensive wetland where rare herons and flamingos abound and where accommodation was in a traditional style hotel in El Rocio – the town where horses are still ridden to the pub and hitching posts are alongside of every sandy road. Hoopoes, Rollers and Bee-eaters were commonplace throughout the trip and rarer birds like White-faced Duck and Western Reef Heron were an extra treat. All became confident in separating Callandra Larks, Short-toed Larks and Crested Larks – at least for the duration of the holiday. Extremadura brought sightings of the Spanish Imperial Eagle as well as numerous smaller eagles and the common Griffon Vultures and Black Kites. This area is perhaps most famous for the Bustards, both Great and Little, and good views were enjoyed by all. Do take a look at the website for more detail. An indoor meeting welcomed Mark Smart, site manager for RSPB Berney Marshes and Breydon Water. He has worked for the RSPB for 25 years and has demonstrated his belief in landscape scale management. It is far more valuable to create large areas of wetland where breeding populations of waders etc. can be self-sustaining, rather than small pockets of protected land. Mark also cooperates with local landowners whose lands adjoin the reserve to increase value still further. An excellent example is Herringfleet Marshes, where meadows are allowed to flood to create scrapes and wet pasture so that Redshank and Lapwing can breed. Overwintering water birds are attracted to this type of habitat and this was a popular spot this winter when it hosted a rare Green-winged Teal. For some of the time the reeds also harboured a Bluethroat as well as the resident Bearded Tits. Readers in the Wensum Valley may be interested to note that the Holkham Estate has done something similar with the meadows just outside Wells. A visit here produced Temminck’s Stint, Wood Sandpipers and Greenshanks as well as the more common waders like Avocet and Redshank. Future events: Indoor meetings on Thursday evenings at Great Witchingham Village Hall, Lenwade, at 7:30pm. 8th August – Members social evening – visitors welcome. Field trip; Saturday 24th August – Frampton Marsh RSPB. For more details and information see the website or contact Sue Gale – wvbs.publicity@gmail.com

We meet on the last Tuesday of the month at Drayton Village Hall, with entertainment from top professional musicians. Starting 7:30pm, there is an interval with refreshments and raffle, finishing 10:00pm. No membership fee, entrance £6 at the door.

Tuesday 25th June Nicholas Martin BEM Nick is a firm favourite of our club and has been making regular visits with his Technics FA1 organ and box of Blackpool Tower sounds for many years. His jaunty, easy going interaction with the audience always creates a relaxed atmosphere for showcasing his vast experience of creative ability and dexterity and this visit showed us that he is still very much on form – as is his ‘Blackpool bounce’ - our feet were soon tapping to several big band and dance numbers. The diversity of Nick’s programme included a Rock ‘n’ Roll medley, The Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, 12th Street Rag, The Conquest of Paradise, Angel in Blue, Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves, Aces High, The Warsaw Concerto, ballads, Sousa Marches and Shostakovich’s Waltz No. 2. During the second half the evening took on a distinctive sentimental feel when Nick played a medley of songs recorded by Doris Day, Ken Dodd and other much-loved singers no longer with us, which he then followed with The Dambusters March and many patriotic tunes prompting much audience participation. An encore of Tiger Rag which seamlessly merged into Vidor’s Toccata and back again completed the concert with an impressive flourish, finished off an immensely enjoyable evening and ensured a repeat visit in a couple of years. Nick’s BEM was awarded in recognition of his tireless fundraising through his concerts etc. for his charity ‘Miracles to Believe In’ which helps support families with children with autism. Nick has 2 sons affected by the condition; during the evening he informed us that the total raised has now reached over £600,000. Tuesday August 27th – Dave Smith Dave has had a very successful and varied musical career since he started playing piano at the age of 4 and is now celebrating 60 years in the business. We are looking forward to this, his 2nd visit, which is well over-due and anticipate another evening of excellent music. Do come and join us, you will be very welcome. Dogs Can Help Families Beat Summer Boredom With the worrying trend for increasing ‘screen time’, it is understandable that parents are in search of healthier summer family activities and dogs could be the answer! As children begin the countdown to the long school holidays, parents everywhere will undoubtedly be fearing the dreaded ‘I’m bored’ announcement from their offspring. For families for whom dog ownership isn’t an option due to work commitments, there is now a part-time, alternative solution which allows them to get out and about with a canine companion in the local area. Barking Mad South Norwich a local leading dog sitting service provider, is currently offering animal loving families, with children aged five or above, the opportunity to join their Host Community and experience having a friendly dog to stay. Walks, play and all the fun associated with caring for a lovely pooch are included, at a time to suit the individual family. There is a growing trend for children to lead a largely screen based lifestyle nowadays, with smartphones and gaming consoles becoming more enticing than playing outside. A two year study funded by the government was published, which shockingly stated that, “12% of children (c. 1·3 million) never visited the natural environment in the previous 12 month period.” Dogs have been proven to encourage us to exercise, get out and about more and generally improve our well-being. This has been documented by Deborah L. Wells of the School of Psychology, Queens University, Belfast, in ‘The Effects of Animals on Human Health and Well-Being’ which concluded: “This particular companion animal can contribute to a significant degree to our well-being and quality of lives.” Helen Tyler of Barking Mad South Norwich enthuses, “We are currently seeking more volunteer dog cuddlers in the local area to care for dogs whose owners are away. This is an ideal opportunity for families, or teaching professionals, who cannot commit to full time dog ownership during term-time, to experience the joy and life enhancing benefits of canine companionship, at a time to suit them. Every Summer, Barking Mad witnesses families whose holiday time is transformed by visiting dogs. They arrive with all their own food, bedding, toys and treats, with all insurance and administration taken care of by ourselves. There is no need to provide anything other than your time and affection and a loving home environment. If you are real dog lovers and have some free time this summer, we would love to hear from you! You can call 01603 340595 or visit www.barkingmad.uk.com to find out more.” Barking Mad is part of the Franchise Brands plc group of companies and is the UK’s favourite dog holiday company, as verified by TrustPilot. Contact Barking Mad at www.barkingmad.uk.com to find your dog’s home from home today.
