TAVERHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN

As those who visited our presentations will recall, the Taverham Neighbourhood Plan is a communityled document for guiding the future development of the parish. It is about the use and development of land over the next 20 years. Once adopted, it will form part of the policy context for any planning application for Taverham.

It is an important document as it can strongly influence the type and impact of any development, and help both Broadland District and Taverham Parish in deciding or supporting planning applications. Following the Greater Norwich Local Plan roadshows in the spring, more sites in Taverham have been put forward for possible development, including three sites off Taverham Road. Broadland will be consulting on the new plan later this year. Broadland will be consulting on the new plan later this year. All sites can be seen by looking at the Taverham Map book at www.greaternorwichgrowth.org.uk/planning/grea ter-norwich-local-plan/reg-18-consultation-sites2018 The Parish Council has appointed Rachel Leggett, a highly experienced Neighbourhood Plan consultant, to project manage the Plan through to completion in autumn 2019. With her associates Emma Harrison and Andrea Long, Rachel will be guiding the Steering Group on writing objectives and policies. These will be presented for consultation later this year.

There have been some changes to the Steering Group’s membership. Rosemary Brown sadly died, and Hazel McMillan, Nigel Langley and Susie Elmes stepped down after the last consultations. All deserve our thanks, and there is no doubt that we are well placed for this next stage because of their hard work, especially that of Susie and Nigel. Three people have joined, Johnathan Cox, Iain Husband and Brian Smith. The Steering Group now comprises those three and Roger Morriss (co-chair), Chris Wilson-Town (co-chair and treasurer), Brenda Clarke (admin.) Margaret Garwood, Glenis Langley, John Pennells, Judy Tyler and Janice Whiting. Tracy Jones is providing secretarial support to the Group.

Our fundraising team stalls at the Taverham Fayre reported takings were slightly down on last year which may have been due to the better than average weather and televised football matches.

However, an impressive figure of £442·80 was raised from the stalls on the field and in the Hall.

Add to this the indoor coffee shop run by Brenda Clarke and her team of supporters making an impressive £417 proves what a successful event it was. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the family and friends who gave their time (and muscle) in erecting and stocking our stalls as without your support these excellent results would have been difficult to achieve, not forgetting those bakers who donated such fine cakes enjoyed by many.

As you read this the refurbishment of the Bedford Room and kitchenette will have been started and the Committee is looking forward to upgrading yet another of our many rooms of varying sizes to suit a variety of activities available for hire. The very large Main Hall and the original Old Hall facilities have just had their quality wooden floors treated as part of our ongoing maintenance programme and are also available for hire although evening slots will prove difficult you may have an opportunity for a daytime activity.

A reminder to those community minded architects and structural engineers willing to assist our team who are already looking at the next very ambitious project of upgrading the main toilet facilities, if you would be willing to help, please contact me via our secretary, Mrs Jo Dye, on 01603 869316.

The Day Centre held it’s AGM on the 14 August.

Members received annual reports from the chairman, coordinator and treasurer.

The accounts showed a small surplus of income over expenditure. Two exceptional items on the accounts were the grant from One Stop Shop Carriers for Causes, which subsidised member’s outings and the required purchase of a new commercial dish washer. The meeting also elected officers and committee members to serve for the next year.

“The programme of events in our WI calendar has seen many changes over its sixty years and one of my strongest memories is of the Handicraft and Produce Shows that used to be held annually in the Village Hall during the 1970s when our membership stood at over 100.

The show, which was held in September each year, gave all members the chance to participate in a wide-ranging display of home skills focussed on gardening, cooking and craft activities with a strong emphasis on homegrown fruit and vegetables, home-made preserves, bread and cake making and handicraft items. Flower arranging also featured with a variety of classes ranging from miniature through to quite large displays.

Prizes and certificates went to the class winners and a small cup awarded to the member achieving the greatest number of points overall with an opportunity for all to see the entries at the normal Friday meeting. There was a great response from our membership and was an excellent example of just what is achievable when a group of like-minded people come together with a common aim.”

New Taverham Players Panto Time

Well, for those of you who missed out on last year’s New Taverham Players pantomime not to worry because they are back this year with the all new family favourite “Dick Whittington”.

Once again the group’s very own Nathan Harrod has written, and will produce and star in this year's New Taverham Players panto – so we are all in for a good time.

The company members have had a lovely break over the summer so are refreshed with batteries recharged and are raring to start rehearsals in early September.

All the traditional characters are included so there will be plenty of opportunity for you all to cheer, boo and sing along with Dick, his cat, Alice and Queen Rat. The dates for Dick Whittington are Monday 3rd December to Saturday 8th December 2018.

We continue to work together to achieve our goals and a perfect example was our 60th Celebratory Summer Social. Held on the hottest day of the year fifty plus members and guests enjoyed an afternoon of delicious food and entertainment. There was a display of our archives, a quiz celebrating Norfolk Day, national events for 1958 were researched and shared. Founder member Ruth Roberts (Robbie) cut a cake celebrating the occasion made by one of our wonderful ‘catering team’ who organized the food for the day. Each of the committee played a part in making it a successful event.

We would like to thank, The Kitchenary, Taverham Garden Centre, Whispers and Tesco for their generous contributions towards the afternoon.

Earlier in July past members were invited to meet the current committee and share memories over tea and cake. There was much chat and laughter; it was good for us to hear about earlier days.

Hello Readers, We hope you enjoyed the school holidays and are getting back into term time routines ď Š During July the members enjoyed; outside chalking and football followed by a closed week due to the England match! We then enjoyed the last session with a game of Limbo, party food and a water fight which was enjoyed by all.

The members and staff voted on which organisation we would like to donate our Fayre money to. It became clear that most people want to share the funds between Taverham Day Care and the SOCIAL Field Youth Club. The presentation we not happen until after September when the clubs re-open, as the young people would like to be involved in the hand over.

The clubs re-open the week beginning the 10th September.

For new member the first session is FREE then ÂŁ1 entry thereafter. This includes access to/use of all the facilities (pool, table tennis, Xbox, WII, air hockey, table football, tuck shop) and free refreshments. We welcome all young people regardless of ethnicity, ability or religious background.

TAVERHAM FAYRE 2018 The Swinging Sixties Taverham Fayre proved to be a huge success with even the weather on our side. You were asked to make this the best Taverham Fayre to date and you did not disappoint with stallholders and visitors joining forces to create an outstanding family event that will last in memories for many years to come.

The superb photographs taken by David Ross for the front page of the August edition shows just a snapshot of the many enjoying the day and hopefully provides just a glimpse of what you all achieved.

There are many family and friends of the Fayre Committee who gave their valuable time to plan, create and organize the day’s activities to whom we are truly grateful as without this support the Fayre would not have been such a huge success, well done and thank you all it is much appreciated.

Unbeknown to visitors the Fayre team were faced with a number of hurdles to overcome in preparing for the day and I have to say they all rose to the challenge admirably, my personal thanks to them all.

Thank you to the mystery judge, who had the most difficult task of judging the stalls and after much deliberation, awarded the John Pelling Shield for Best Dressed Stall, to the “Taverham History Society” and the award for Best Dressed Stallholders went to “St, Edmund’s Church”. Well done to both teams.

The choice of food available was appreciated by everyone with all stalls reporting it was a great success. Including the tea room located in the Village Hall run by Brenda and her team to raise funds for the continued refurbishments of the hall.

I think it is fair to say, if you did not attend what a great family day you missed and hope to see you next year.

Your Fayre Committee is already working on 2019 and they would welcome comments or ideas you would wish to put forward for consideration.

I have been scratching my head about what to write for the Newsletter in this quiet season for indoor bowls but then fresh from a management meeting I thought of all the unsung club members who continue to beaver away in the background ensuring the smooth running of the club. This is the time for approximately 400 renewal notices to be issued, membership fees collected, league applications to be sorted and new leagues produced ready for the new season in September. These also have to be fitted in with the County and Cup fixtures, external rink bookings and functions being held by Roundwood Function and Conference Centre.

Rink booking sheets have to be drawn up, again in conjunction with the master calendar.

There have been meetings with solicitors to ensure a smooth change from Company to Charity status, negotiations with our landlords over our tenancy agreement, costing out heating, lighting, organising the carpet turning and ensuring health and safety issues and fire regulations are up to requirements. The coaches continue to give their time freely to encourage prospective new members and a core of members turn up weekly to organise and enable social roll- ups to take place. Our Treasurers in particular work very hard (particularly over the next couple of months with renewal fees) to keep the accounts ready for auditing and the club finances on an even keel. There are other jobs, all vital to the organisation of the Club but I think it's a good time to thank them all, for their efforts result in the successful club that we have at Roundwood.

TAVERHAM HISTORY SOCIETY On Wednesday, 19th September, 7:30pm, Taverham Village Hall, Barbara Miller, will present “A Bishop, A Quaker and a Roll of wire netting”. Tickets are £2·50, on the door and there will be our usual raffle & refreshments at very reasonable prices.

This is another subject from the professional and popular Barbara Miller that all sounds quite intriguing and I am looking forward to discovering the full story, you will not wish to miss this one.

Life Saving Surgery and Blood Transfusion for British Bulldog Nelson

Gorgeous British Bulldog Nelson visited us as he was feeling very poorly. Nelson was progressively losing weight and suddenly became very lethargic with a distended abdomen and extremely pale gums.

Emergency investigations were started straight away, which included ultrasound scans, blood tests and Xrays, all of which were performed in-house thanks to our advanced diagnostic facilities.

These tests revealed Nelson had a large splenic mass, which had ruptured and was filling his abdomen with blood – known as a haemoabdomen.

This was a true emergency and required surgery straight away. Nelson was placed on intravenous fluid therapy to maintain blood pressure and Vet Luke performed the lifesaving surgery, known as a splenectomy, to remove Nelson’s troublesome spleen and the large attached mass. After the surgery Nelson was monitored continuously in our hospital.

After initial improvement, Nelson’s PCV (red blood cells) were found to be decreasing and he required an emergency blood transfusion.

Thankfully here at Taverham Veterinary Hospital we store donated blood on-site. Nelson’s unit of blood was donated by the amazing Fred, an elegant Greyhound (pictured). Posttransfusion, Nelson was a much happier boy and after a further 24 hours in intensive care at our hospital his red blood cells continued to stabilise.

Nelson was very bright, happy and wagging his tail again! We are very pleased to report that he is continuing recover well and is, of course, receiving plenty of TLC at home.

We provided a little light relief from our historical facts in July with an amusing and equally interesting talk from David Poole entitled, the Accent on Dialects. David who admitted that even though he has lived in Norfolk for fifty years is still a long way from being regarded as a local and kindly donated his fee to the “Star Throwers” charity.

Thank you again for your support at the Taverham Fayre and for taking part in our “Pop Pickers” game and do hope those winners of the sixties sweets did not eat them all at once. I would like to thank fellow committee members for creating such a colourful and inviting stall and to young James Wilson who donated his takings to society funds.

MISTAKES They say you can learn from your mistakes. It’s certainly true in my case. I’ve wasted a lot of time and effort not thinking things through. Planting crops to close together for one, especially gooseberry bushes .They need plenty of room and it makes them easier to pick.

Make sure they are netted. The birds love them. Too many small raised beds take up valuable growing space. Invest in a walk-in cage, preferable metal. It won’t rot like wood. Ensure you cover with small butterfly netting to protect your brassicas. Having to move small knee high frames to weed and harvest is a pain. I prefer autumn raspberries to spring. More productive and you can usually harvest from August to early November. Cut back hard to the ground in winter and cover in good rotted manure. Don’t plant too much. Keep it simple. It’s amazing how much is left unharvested on plots. A useful deterrent to invaders is 2ft 6in small wire mesh fence all around your plot firmly dug into ground. Finally make a crop plan for next season and learn from your mistakes. And be nice to your neighbours. You might learn something.

Vic Birtles, Plot 65 ROOTS ARE IMPORTANT It may seem odd to be thinking about drainage in the middle of a long hot spell. When you look at the plants which are resisting the dry spell best, it is the ones with the most extensive root system. Even small plants can have an extensive root system which allows them to cope with high temperatures and a drying wind. When you look at a tree, remember that there is as much of the tree under the ground as there is above.

Poor drainage restricts root growth. Roots will not penetrate waterlogged soil as they need air and oxygen in the soil to survive. There is no air in soil when it is waterlogged. One may think that wet soil is a good thing in dry conditions but because the plant has a restricted root system it cannot access enough moisture in hot dry conditions.

On ‘heavy’ clay soils a piped drainage system is necessary to control the level of the water table. Many people think that such drains fill from the top but in fact they fill from underneath as the water table rises. On light sandy soils the main culprit for restricted root growth is a plough or digging pan. If you regularly dig at the same depth the layer just below the spade can become compacted or panned. To overcome this, it is important to start by creating a trench and carry that soil to the other end of the plot. Fork the soil in the bottom of the trench without inverting it, just try to create fissures or cracks in the profile. Then invert the soil from the next line of digging to create the second trench and repeat with the fork. This will root penetration and boost plant growth.

County and District Councillor’s Report Recently have been quite a few changes and developments at both NCC and BDC, these include Broadland Northway (NDR) is fully open now. There have been some issues regarding road configuration and access to the roundabouts; overall the road has been received positively, with improved journey times, reduced congestion and economic benefits for local businesses and tourism. There have been environmental gains with reduced "rat running” through suburban parts of Broadland and increased planting and wildlife schemes.

The most and only ongoing negative comment I have received from many local residents and businesses is "when is NCC going to finish the full orbital route properly" i.e. link the A1067 to the A47 this is TOTALLY NECESSARY asap to maximize fully the benefits of the NDR, and most importantly Taverham residents.

Western Link. This complete orbital route around Norwich has been planned as far back as 1947 (a City Engineer’s report stated it was necessary to plan for the future of Norwich). Up until very recent times NCC has lacked the real commitment to deliver the "missing link". As local residents are aware I have always been totally committed to the delivery of this section. My support for the NDR was conditional on work commencing on the planning for the delivery of the Western Link as soon as the NDR was opened. I am currently the Chairman of the members’ working group responsible for the planning and implementation of the delivery of the NWL aiming for 2021. Please be assured I will do all I can to keep this project on track. Whilst I fully acknowledge there are Environment challenges these CAN and WILL be solved with engineering solutions. In NCCs/EDPs recent survey 90% plus of respondents SUPPORTED a link road. NCC must deliver and I am committed to working hard to keep this project on time.

New Leader for NCC. As you may have read or seen Cliff Jordon, NCCs former leader, died in June. Cliff was a Norfolk man through and through and always did what he considered best for Norfolk (although he was controversial). Andrew Proctor has been elected Leader. He is a very experienced, committed and professional Leader (previously the Leader of BDC) who now has the massive task of continuing the work Cliff Jordon’s started of turning NCC around into a high performing, well managed customer focused organization, which is accountable to residents, businesses and communities; this will take time and need pragmatic decision making.

Taverham VC CE Junior School. Congratulations to all the Children, Paul Stanley (Headteacher), staff and governors for obtaining an OFSTED "Good" rating. Our community can be rightly proud of this team achievement and feel confident Taverham children are getting quality caring education, in a safe school environment delivered by a well led motivated staff team.

Nightingale First School. This like all of the schools in Taverham previously had an excellent reputation (previous OFSTED “Outstanding”) for the delivery of high quality education for all children and those with learning difficulties or special educational needs, in a caring and safe environment, taught by a well-managed and motivated staff. Over the past eighteen months or so standards, in almost every respect, have fallen dramatically resulting in an NCC intervention in 2016 and a subsequent OFSTED inspection in March 2018 which rated NFS as INADEQUATE, a situation which is wholly unacceptable. At the time of writing this report I am continuing to pursue officials at NCC to get answers as to why this situation has been allowed to happen and for so long. Responsible persons should be held accountable. I will do whatever I can to assist in bringing about a rapid improvement in this situation, Taverham children should not be let down in this way, they deserve better!

Collaborative Working Broadland and South Norfolk District Councils At a meeting of the full councils in July BDC and SNDC moved a step closer towards more collaborative working. This will potentially involve greater collaboration in key areas and sharing services and a senior management team and the appointment of a Joint Managing Director who will be responsible for building a joint officer team, this should result in savings to both councils and improved service delivery. Whilst at this stage there are strong safeguards built into the adopted Feasibility Study document for BDC and an option to withdraw from the arrangements if they are seen not to be working. Be assured I will hold the Executive to account to do everything I can ensure that nothing further is adopted which might impact on BDC residents, businesses, and staff morale. BDC is a wellrun and managed Council and it must remain so.

Increase in Anti-Social Behaviour/Crime in Taverham. Whilst overall this is and remains a relatively low crime and safe area to live in, there has been a recent spate of instances of crime and anti-social behaviour. I will be meeting with our Neighbourhood Policing team and BDC’s Early Help Hub team to ascertain the extent of the problems and what proactive steps they are taking to bring the perpetrator and persistent offenders to account quickly, so that we can all feel confident this situation is being addressed. Remember if you are the victim of any form of crime or witness criminal activity report it to the police, Taverham must not become an area where we tolerate or accept crime, however low level.

We meet on the last Tuesday of every month at Drayton Village Hall, with entertainment from popular professional organists from around the country, 7:30pm start with an interval for refreshments and a raffle, finishing at 10pm. There is no membership fee, entrance is £6.

Matt Gooch, warden of Carlton Marshes Nature Reserve in Suffolk, gave us a highly informative talk. The site is owned and managed by Suffolk Wildlife Trust and is about to be expended thanks to fundraising and generous grants. It will soon be in excess of 1000 acres and the funding will be used to put water back into the landscape. There is also a plan for a New Centre with impressive facilities which should be open at Easter 2020.

The talk was followed up by a field trip to the reserve. In the car park we were met with Whitethroat feeding young in a nest nearby: Swallows and House Martins flying around and plenty of House Sparrows. Dragonflies and Butterflies sparked much interest and we spotted several Norfolk Hawker, Black-tailed Skimmer, Scarce and 4-spot Chasers and Southern and Brown Hawkers, along with those very tricky blue damselflies. Meadow Brown butterflies and Ringlet were all over the reserve. Small and Large Skippers were spied, as were Tortoiseshell, Comma and Speckled Wood. Marsh Harrier was in the air, Kestrel out hunting and a Buzzard taking advantage of the warm thermals. After a ferry crossing to the Waveney River Centre for coffee, a Fen Raft Spider was seen among the lily pads in one of the dykes. This spider is the UK’s biggest and has been introduced to the reserve. The afternoon yielded many waders on the scrape beside Share Marsh. About fifty Black-tailed Godwits in varying plumages showed brilliantly in the sunshine alongside Avocets, Lapwing and Mallard with young. Yellow Wagtails and offspring were there as promised, with Common Snipe, two Little Ringed Plovers and three Green Sandpipers. A Greenshank and Wood Sandpiper proved more difficult to pick up with the reeds blowing in the breeze.

Tuesday July 31st Once again John Bowdler came from sunny Wigan with his Technics GA3 (he calls it his ‘steam organ’ because it is so old) and his module of sampled Blackpool Tower Wurlitzer sounds to bring a little bit of the ballroom to Norwich – well quite a big bit of it really. He is now in his 31st year of being one of the team of organists playing most days for dancing at the tower and still has a great deal of enthusiasm for his profession and promoting these wonderful old instruments.

John’s flawless style and bounce coupled with his natural connection with his audience had us tapping our toes and humming along in no time, delighting those amongst us, of whom there are many, who still appreciate the traditional style of organ concert. It was obvious that he is also a very accomplished pianist because the piano voice was featured in many of the tunes he played, incorporating it with the traditional organ, strings and other orchestral voices, changing the mood of each piece as he played through it.

There were several ragtime tunes, polkas, Scottish dances, sambas, marches and swingy numbers all accompanied by that ‘Blackpool bounce!’ as well as some beautifully delivered ballads and slow Latin pieces, all too numerous to mention, although Chopin’s ‘Nocturne in Eb’, Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man of Mine, Sweet Georgia Brown and George Formby’s famous ukulele songs gives a bit of indication of the diversity of the programme!

Needless to say the evening was as enjoyable as his last visit and we hope to be able to book him again in the future.

Tuesday September 25th Steve Hubble previously had his own music shop and teaching business but in recent years has returned to the professional circuit. This will be a very welcome second visit to our club.

DRAYTON FLOWER CLUB

VALE PROBUS CLUB The World’s Most Precious Resource …….. was the mysterious subject of our guest Richard Butler, who soon revealed that it came from JFK: ‘Children are the world’s most precious resource and its best hope for the future’. Richard, a man of many parts, has held a number of posts in the scout movement locally and nationally and was today wearing his scout ‘hat’ with immense enthusiasm.

The talk began from an historical perspective: Lord Baden Powell, a national hero, having been asked to develop some new ideas for working with young people published these in fortnightly instalments that became a best seller; how a camp on Brownsea Island for 24 boys had grown into the current movement of forty million scouts worldwide.

And then Richard started on us. How many of us had been involved in scouting? A forest of hands.

How many of us could remember the patrol we’d been in? ‘Wolves, Eagles, Peewits…’ we shouted. A veritable zooful of memories. Did we know that three in every four adult males in the UK are or have been in the scouts? That a World Scout Jamboree, with some 44000 participants, is a massively bigger event than the Olympic Games?

We probably did not, but we do now, and we were all left in no doubt about the impact that scouting has had worldwide. The 2007 Jamboree in Essex, celebrating 100 years of scouting, had created a village larger than North Walsham - walking from edge to edge of the site took just under an hour.

Norfolk’s own major, week-long Jamboree, NORJAM, will be taking place in August, so some impressive images of what 44000 scouts at a Jamboree opening ceremony looked like, and of the inspirational dreamer Baden Powell who founded a movement that has inspired thousands of young people, gave a fitting conclusion to Richard’s informative talk.

After a couple of 'Fusions' Bernard Collingsworth's demonstration was a welcome change. 'From Streams to Dreams' took us through Bernard's life from a little lad fishing in a local river, helping his Father, who had his own dreams, which didn't always come to fruition, to where Bernard eventually found himself, as a very successful florist and now an Area demonstrator. Needless to say the arrangements Bernard created were delightful, with crisp foliage and beautiful flowers especially the roses. We wish him well in his demonstrating life.

DRAYTON HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION We couldn’t have had a more appropriate subject for our July meeting, as presented by our guest speaker, Rosie Ward. It was one of the hottest days of the year and on entering the Village Hall it was as if someone had left the heating on. We opened the windows but as we were to be shown slides the curtains were drawn, making it even warmer! However, Rosie’s talk was about “Plants for a Shady Garden”. She had travelled all the way from Cirencester and still managed to show us slides of the many plants which thrive in shady areas – shrubs, trees and perennials – a long list from A-Z. We learned a lot from her.

On Saturday September 8th we will be holding our annual Autumn Show when our members will hopefully bring along their prize entries, but once again we wonder how the weather has affected plants without rain for such a long time. The hall will be open from 2:00pm for visitors to see the results and have a cup of tea.

Ian Roofe has been booked to come to us on September 4th, the title of his talk being “Plants of the Moment”. Ian holds a number of posts in the Norfolk and Norwich Horticultural Association and is often a panel member on the Radio Norfolk programme “The Garden Party” on Saturday mornings. TIMES OF REFRESHING! The holidays are over and for children it’s back to school! We may or may not feel refreshed however we feel the fact remains that autumn is now upon us. Holidays are good we all need them, but nothing beats the times of refreshing that God sends by his Spirit.

At tec, church continues each Sunday, as well as all the other ministries listed below, we look forward to seeing you.

At Taverham Village Hall  Tea with Tec, fellowship and food, 1st Wednesday each month, 2:30 – 4:00pm.  Messy Church, breakfast, games, crafts, every 2nd Sunday, 9:30 - 10:45am.

At Thorpe Marriott Village Hall – Friday term time.  Puddles, for babies and toddlers, 10:00 – 11:45, Fridays,  Soaked youth, 11-16, fun, friends and ‘God Cast’ Fridays.

St Peter’s Ringland Café church, 2nd and 4th Sundays, 5pm - an informal and friendly time with tea/coffee/cake and quizzes and an informal discussion on a Christian theme.
