TAVERHAM YOUTH CENTRE

Quite a busy month for the Club including a very successful charter lunch at Wensum Valley Golf Club and 75 guests sat down for lunch, with this year’s regional governor and first lady in the position, Mandy Hawksley.

Only!! 3 BBQs this month but all were different, hard work but enjoyable. First we were pleased to support Drayton Church for its annual event on the small playing field in the centre of the village. Then we were asked back to Ghost Hill School Friends who put on a fund raising event, and for the 32nd time at the Taverham Fayre an extremely warm time even before we fired up!!

Some of the Club’s members helped on both days of the Royal Norfolk Show. Again it was pleasing to be offering a service instead of raising money; at the King George gate we strapped wristbands onto young visitors with telephone contacts so if they were separated from their accompanying adult then a quick phone call would reunite both parties.

Our new president is Sue Howes, doing the job for a third time and taking over from Malcolm Neal who has had a very successful year. It was Malcolm’s second time as club leader. Malcolm has started the initiative for a new club at Reepham and it is something that President Sue will be carrying forward.

Our year has ended and we have made well over 30 individual donations including Sightsavers in India, International measles initiative, Jenny Lind Hospital, Taverham Day Centre, Asthma Relief, Women v Cancer.

During June the members enjoyed helping to prepare for the Fayre by painting decorations for the stall, this went on most of the month in addition to chalking outside, football and giant connect 4. Parish Councillor Brenda Clarke came to consult with the members on what they may like to see in Taverham. The young people were forthcoming with their ideas of what we should have in the parish.

It was our first year of attending the Fayre and it was well supported by staff and members. I would like to thank all those who helped on the day and contributed with items for our Tombola. Thanks to TESCO (Drayton) and everyone who donated we raised the grand sum of £236. The members would like to donate half of this to another Taverham charity. We will be voting on this in July and will inform you of their choice next month.

The clubs are only open in term time. For new members the first session is FREE, then £1 entry thereafter. We welcome all young people regardless of ethnicity, ability or religious background.

TAVERHAM HISTORY SOCIETY Author and historian Gill Blanchard provided a considerable amount of information to those wishing to trace the history of the house in which they live or indeed any other property of interest.

It was clear that Gill is very passionate about her work and was very willing to impart her considerable experience and knowledge to an attentive audience.

Our “Pop Pickers” game at the Taverham Fayre proved to be a “hit” with many complimenting us on the unique idea for the game and the presentation of our stall. This clearly appealed to the judges too as we were awarded the John Pelling Shield for the “Best Dressed Stall”. Thank you for your loyal support and to the Fayre committee for organising another very successful event and arranging such fine weather.

EACH supports families and cares for children and young people with life threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk. The centre at Quidenham is now too small and a new larger site is being developed where state of the art equipment and accommodation enabling parents to stay with their child for short periods in comfort. We were shown some case histories to illustrate the wide range of conditions and treatments and the dedication of the staff and the close relationships that develop between staff and families.

Fundraising is necessary as the NHS only partly funds the service, many families continue to be involved after the bereavement of their child, so EACH was delighted when the Duchess of Cambridge became their Patron to add support and highlight the non-stop task of raising money.

A small party of us had a delightful trip to Ely for the flower festival in the Cathedral, ‘Kaleidoscope of Life’; it certainly lived up to its description. The arrangements were spectacular with rich colours and many differing varieties of flowers and plants. Some depicting bible stories, others architecture and aspects of everyday modern life. My favourite was in the north transept ‘End of World War 1’ with a war horse sculpture and a devotional wall where visitors could place a flower in memory of someone.

To end the month in a blaze of glorious sunshine we took part in the Taverham Fayre, with games of ‘rolla ball’, ‘splat the rat’ and ‘higher and lower’ we had fun with families taking part and competing to get the highest score. A traditional favourite and a must have is ‘guess the weight of the cake’. We may not have made a fortune but it was a good to see so many families and friends enjoying the day. Thank you to the ‘Fayre Committee’ for the hard work.

Recently Helen became the proud owner of Barking Mad South Norwich. As Helen and her wife are dog less due their busy teacher schedules, their first experience of the Barking Mad service was as hosts. During term-time they could only host at the weekend but it meant their time off had a new purpose and meaning, filled with dog walks and meeting people in parts of Norfolk they had never visited.

They were also fully supported by the Barking Mad franchisee in understanding how to provide the best care for the dogs as well as helping them to settle the dog in and maintaining their routine. They are passionate about safeguarding the emotional and physical health and well-being of your dog, whilst you are away from them. Helen recruits and trains only the kindest and most nurturant hosts, lovely people who want to welcome your dog into their home.

Becoming a host by looking after someone else’s dog whilst their owners are away, is all set up and organised by Helen, who takes this otherwise often informal arrangement and makes it fully safe, insured and easy to take part in without costing you a penny. As a dog holiday host, you provide a loving home environment where your doggy visitor relaxes and feels at home. Regular exercise and companionship is your part of the deal, the transport is dealt with by Helen. There is no need to worry about paperwork or dealing with the customer yourself because Helen takes care of this. All you need to do is meet up with Helen and you agree the type of dogs you like and when you are available to look after them.

Bertie in a Sticky Situation!

Gorgeous Cocker Spaniel Bertie was brought into the surgery to see vet Ed after suddenly developing very smelly breath and continually smacking his lips. He seemed sore around his mouth and was reluctant to be touched in that area. Bertie had been busying himself in the garden the previous day, doing lots of digging and foraging!

To allow for a full oral exam Bertie was admitted and anaesthetised. This revealed a wooden stick wedged very firmly across the top of Bertie’s mouth (hard palette) as seen pictured!

Thankfully the stick had not caused any significant damage and was soon removed by Ed whilst Bertie was under anaesthetic. Bertie recovered quickly from his procedure and was soon able to go home to be given lots of TLC by his family. We are pleased to report that Bertie is continuing to recover well at home and is back to his usual bouncy Spaniel self!

Writing this from my sunbed by the pool in Tenerife (aided by a g and t!) reminds me that this is the quiet time at the bowls club with other members also away on their holidays or else playing outdoor bowls in this gorgeous weather.

However, this article is for the August newsletter so is a good chance to remind members that their annual subscriptions are due by the end of the month (1st September to be precise). The renewal notices are at the club ready for collection.

All league team entries should have been submitted by the end of July and the new leagues drawn up accordingly. New members looking for competitive matches are encouraged to join the Sunday morning league which is played from 10:00 am to 12 noon.

Finally back on the holiday theme don't forget our bookshelves will welcome all those blockbusters you enjoyed during those flights to sunny climes.

This takes place every 4 years and only feels a short time since the last one! Our Scout Troop will be taking part again and there will be a full report later in the year.

TAVERHAM TABLE TENNIS CLUB Although this summer has to include World Cup Football, Golf, Cricket, Wimbledon and horses misbehaving in the paddock on a race-course somewhere in the UK, the sport of Table Tennis continues at the Village Hall on Friday evenings at 7:30pm throughout August. Admittedly hot weather does not help and open windows can affect the flight of the ball but notwithstanding it is the time to practise, rehearse those devilish serves and experiment with new bats. Normally this is enough for some members, but for the others, best described as ‘hardy- annuals’ the Norwich Summer League offers competition and match play. The Chairman has appeared in two matches and has yet to secure a win. This year he is blaming the high pollen count!

The Table Tennis exchange with Eislingen in Germany will soon be taking place. This was started by the late Bill Todd and it is lovely that his two Clubs Taverham and Foxwood will be well represented on the trip abroad.

August can be a busy time on the allotment – there’s lots of harvesting to do, including crops such as runner beans, potatoes and raspberries.

Once they have fruited, the canes of summer-fruiting raspberries can be cut down to the ground. This will encourage lots of new growth and a good crop the following year.

You can still sow lots of crops in August to harvest into autumn and beyond. They include lettuce (keep out of the glare of direct sun), rocket, spring onion, radish plus winter salads.

This year has been excellent for soft fruits. I never thought I would use the words ‘not more strawberries!’

Maybe it was the above normal rainfall early in the year followed by some extended sunny periods. Suffice to say we now have an extended collection of jams to see us through till next year.

You can never predict wildlife visitors to the plots and in previous years rats and mice have made themselves unwelcome! This year moles have been very evident.

As the surrounding fields dry out, they are drawn to the wet areas created by people attempting to keep their plots moist. Whilst they aren’t interested in munching on crops, they do cause root disruption with their tunnelling for worms and slugs. And you can’t put nets up to stop them!

Perfect summer sunshine, a large and appreciative crowd of visitors from all corners of the globe and a bandstand with the backdrop of the historic buildings provided the perfect setting for the Band’s concert at Windsor Castle at the end of June. The fantastic atmosphere which had been created by the Royal Wedding only days earlier was still evident in the town and, when we arrived, we saw the Royal Standard flying from the private apartments to indicate that the Queen was in residence.

It would not, of course, have been the first occasion on which Her Majesty had heard the band play, since we were privileged to perform at Sandringham on the occasion of her Diamond Jubilee Garden Party.

Prior to our two hour-long performances there was the opportunity to visit the magnificent State Apartments and experience the amazing collection of paintings, furniture and porcelain alongside historic armaments and memorabilia.

The view from the Castle over to the Chapel and playing fields of Eton College was stunning.

All in all it was truly a day to remember and experience at first hand the images which had been broadcast across the world at the wedding.

The evening before, the band gave a concert at the Musical Museum, home to a wide variety of rare mechanical musical instruments including (albeit out of sight beneath the stage) a Wurlitzer organ. The acoustic was first class, the stage spacious and the hosts generous in inviting the band back again next year.

In short, a weekend full of a sense of occasion coupled with the usual Band fellowship.

Certainly one which will be remembered and talked about for some time to come.

The constitution of the Day Centre, written in 1982, states that its objects shall be to promote the welfare of the elderly or handicapped in any manner which now is or hereafter may be deemed by law to be charitable and to provide and maintain a Day Centre for the purpose of recreation and other leisure time occupation in the interests of social welfare. This we do with the help of our many volunteers. The volunteers also benefit because it gives them an opportunity to help others and to meet and make friends. For several years we have given work experience placements for Norwich City College students in the Health and Health and Social Care Studies courses.

The demonstration of ' Fusion ' by Helen McGregor was exactly that, a blend of old and new shapes, containers and flowers cleverly put together. It's quite amazing what can be done with skip rescued items! A delightful evening.

The coach trip to the Ely Flower Festival was “wonderful, stunning, absolutely gorgeous '' and so on. A picnic in the Bishop's garden down by the river also contributed to a fantastic day out for members and friends.

It is not too late to come to our next event, "A Mad Hatter’s Tea Party on Saturday August 18th at 2:00 pm for 2:30pm in Drayton Village Hall. It's a 'proper' party with all the bells and whistles and, of course, an amazing surprise as entertainment. Not to be missed ladies – gentlemen always welcome as well. Please come along, non-members also very welcome. If you would like further details of the club and our activities please phone Pam Bailey 867730 who is very happy to help.

Forty-six years ago it was time for a young lad from Aylsham to leave school and seek his fortune in the big wide world. He knew he wanted to be a gardener and what better place than to try and get a job at Blickling Hall. He was lucky and got the job and that young man was our recent speaker.

Stephen Hagen is now Assistant Head Gardener at the Hall, his dream job. He said he was aiming to stay until he had reached a total of 50 years there before retiring.

He showed us slides of the gardens, some parts had not changed, but now for the winter season hundreds of bulbs are planted by the many volunteers; hyacinths, bluebells, snowdrops and daffodils – such a colourful display. The large greenhouses have been rebuilt. We had a very amusing and entertaining talk, ending with Stephen ‘name-dropping’, with photographs of the many wellknown celebrities who had visited the Hall over the years.

Sweet Peas are the subject of our meeting on August 7th, this being the specialised subject of our speaker, Geoff Freeman. Do come along and join us visitors and new members are always welcome 7:30pm in Drayton Village Hall.

This month I have a healthy, low fat summer dessert recipe - very easy and quick to prepare with only 4 ingredients!

Great if you have spent the whole day in the sun and only have 5 minutes to prepare something….

Banana Yoghurt Pots (Serves 4)

Ingredients 450g carton of plain natural yoghurt 3-4 bananas cut into chunks 4 tbspns brown sugar 25g walnuts (toasted and chopped) Method 1. Take 4 small/sundae glasses and place one tablespoon of the yoghurt into the bottom of each glass.

2. Add a layer of banana and then place in some more yoghurt.

3. Repeat the layers until the glasses are full.

4. Sprinkle over the sugar and nuts.

5. Leave in the fridge for 20 minutes until the sugar has dissolved.

CYBERCRIME

We meet on the last Tuesday of the month at Drayton Village Hall, with entertainment from top professional organists from around the country. The evening starts at 7:30pm, there is an interval with refreshments and a raffle, and it finishes at 10:00 pm. There is no membership fee, entrance is £6 at the door.

On a sweltering day our guest was Paul Maskell, with a Master of Ceremony’s voice and a charismatic personality to stop us falling asleep after lunch! Readers may know him from TV appearances in his professional role as Cybersecurity chief for Norfolk Police, having done similar work with the armed services.

Although he is patently master of the technicalities involved, these were a side issue to his main messages to which he devotes truly missionary zeal. These were: 1. To our children or grandchildren, smartphones etc. have always been part of their lives like TV is to their elders. It is their future and they must embrace it, but our experience of life can help them to learn how to survive the dangers if we “don’t try to understand it – just value it”.

2. Financial crime on the internet is huge and our police are largely powerless to combat it.

Money lost by fraud can’t be recovered simply because within 20 seconds of payment it disappears into thousands of accounts all round the world.

3. So the only hope to combat it is to “get safe on line”. Never open emails or give out personal information on trust! When our trusted provider sends an annoying update reminder don’t put it off they’re doing their best to “fill holes in the sea defences” in the face of a rising tide of 1000s of new viruses every day.

Remember that an attack can happen to anybody.

Paul delivered this and much more straight from the heart – lucidly, animatedly and with passion.

Tuesday 26th June – Alex Payler A very talented musician and personable young man, Alex is serious about showcasing the fantastic features and cutting-edge technology of the modern electronic organ and in particular the Yamaha Electone Stagea ELS-02c, which he imported from Japan. He has, in fact, bought two of them (in his own words - just in case . . . . . . .) such is his passion for the instrument.

Throughout the evening Alex ably demonstrated not only his dexterity and articulation but also his creative capability for arranging, using many of the vast palette of voices to their best, in authentic orchestral and big band productions that would be worthy of a performance in a grand arena. Film overtures and themes, the Thunderbirds theme from 1960s TV, Bizet’s Flute Minuet and Habenera, the Sugar Plum Fairy all sat comfortably side by side with Hello Dolly Dixie style and Duke Ellington’s It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing (with a great bass pedal solo) and Take the A Train. Not forgetting the organ voices, Alex also included Purcell’s Trumpet Tune and a jazzy gospel organ style Lean on Me. All organists we book to play for us are excellent musicians and I know our audiences appreciate the varied playing styles they bring us; this was certainly a different concert and perhaps a glimpse into the future with some organists wanting to appeal to a wider audience in order to keep the interest in the instrument alive – all very encouraging, so long as the traditional ‘organ playing styles’ are not left behind.

Tuesday 28th August – Tim Flint Tim has been on the ‘organ circuit’ for many years, we are expecting some excellent music delivered with a dry sense of humour!
