DEVOLUTION

As your elected councillors for Taverham we are anxious to seek your views on Devolution which has been extensively publicised by Local TV and Press. Norfolk County and Broadland District Councils are consulting us all through the Devolution in Norfolk leaflet and Broadland News; both should have been delivered to every household in our area.

Devolution is arguably the most important issue to affect local government since it was reorganised in 1974 and potentially it affects us all in the way local services are delivered and paid for.

Devolution came about as a result of the government handing devolved powers for decision making to the Scottish Government and the Welsh and Northern Ireland Assemblies. It was subsequently decided (the Devolution Act) to devolve power from Westminster to the English regions.

After a lengthy negotiated process involving the Leaders of Norfolk, Suffolk, the Local Enterprise Partnership and all District Councils an agreement was reached. It was agreed at both NCC and BDC to consult all residents, businesses and voluntary groups to seek their views and opinions.

As the details of the proposed agreement are available in either the above publications direct from Norfolk County Council or Broadland District Council and also can be found on the Websites eastangliadevolution@norfolk.gov.uk or devolution@broadland.gov.uk, we do not propose to go into the specific details of the scheme of Devolution the local authorities are consulting on.

If you require any additional or specific information on any aspect of the devolution proposal or the consultation please contact any one of us and we will do our best to provide whatever we can.

The Senior Partner at Taverham Surgery will be retiring on 30th September. Having qualified in Australia in 1977 Jon joined the practice in 1985. Since this time he has not only seen the Practice develop but also seen considerable developments in healthcare; from the introduction of the MMR vaccination to routine use of some of the most sophisticated medical equipment available. In 1985 patient records were entirely paper based as opposed to the fully computerised patient records now in place in General Practice. He has worked through numerous incarnations of the Health Service all with the common factor of General Practice and its practitioners at the forefront.

In his retirement Jon is planning to take a welldeserved break and focus on his family and new granddaughter and, of course, continuing to support Norwich City Football Club.

The Partners and staff thank Jon for his commitment to the practice and for being a consistent figure, providing care to the patients of Taverham, over the last 30 years. We wish him a long, relaxing and enjoyable retirement.

The flu is not a severe cold. It is a completely different virus that attacks your immune system, leaving you vulnerable to other more serious illnesses.

If you will be aged 65 or over by 31st March 2017 or if you suffer from one of the following Chronic Diseases: Diabetes, Chronic Heart Condition, Respiratory Condition (including Asthma), Chronic Kidney Disease or have lowered immunity due to steroid medication that you are taking or are undergoing cancer treatment or you are currently pregnant then you will be entitled to a free flu vaccination. The vaccine does not contain any live flu viruses so it is impossible to catch the flu from this vaccine.

We have now received our vaccine delivery dates and intend to run clinics on: Saturday 24th September and Saturday 8th October.

A clinician will be present at both clinics.

How to book your appointment: Please call the surgery on 01603 867481 to arrange an appointment. Bookings can be taken each day from Thursday the 1st of September.

First, I would like to thank our fund raising team for their hard work and dedication, particularly over the past few weeks for achieving a fantastic figure of £1042 in Trolley Dash ticket sales. At this point I would also like to thank Wayne Leech, the Manager of Tesco Drayton as his help, support and guidance enabled them to surpass their goal.

Add to this, the income on the Village Hall stalls at the Fayre of £123∙20 and £62∙90, what a great achievement. And what superb support from the community, it clearly demonstrates how much you all value the facilities available. In the hall itself the sale of tables for the Craft fair raised £306, in all what a result, phew!

I should, of course, congratulate the winner of the Trolley Dash, Mrs Gerry Moore who is currently working her way through the trolley full of goodies. Well done Gerry!

At the time of going to press we had yet to start refurbishing Suite 2, redecorating the Old Hall and the passage to the suites but do hope you were not too inconvenienced and are already enjoying the upgrade. Thank you for your patience and understanding and do hope you will help us to maintain standards by reporting any damages to the secretary.

Please do not take bicycles into the lobby as wheels and tyres have already damaged the walls incurring extra cost. Cycle racks are provided, bring a lock and use them.

Whatever the size of your group we must have a room to suit your needs, make the Taverham Village Hall your first port of call.

TAVERHAM TORNADOS NCFC EXPERIENCE

Taverham Tornados U12's were invited to participate in a Festival of Football up at Norwich City FC training ground on the newly opened 3G pitch.

TAVERHAM GIRLS SEASON 2016/17

After another fantastic year at Taverham Girls Football Club plans are now in place in forming a new Girls U10s team for next season. Invites have been sent to local schools Taverham Junior and Drayton Junior to all Girls in school years 3, 4 and 5 who would like to try free training on Monday nights 5-30pm to 6-45pm at Hinks Meadow Thorpe Marriott. TFC is able to provide FREE training to the younger Girls age groups due to support from the FOOTBALLFOUNDATION and The Norfolk F.A. The new Girls U10s team will be called Taverham Tigresses and will be formed for League matches starting in October. Matches are played on Saturday morning all over Norfolk.

Taverham Girls now consist of seven teams:U10s Tigresses, U11s Toucans, U12s Tornadoes, U13s Turbos, U14s Steelers, U14s Bluebirds and U15s United.

Which equates to around 90 local young ladies training and playing every week – Taverham Girls is now the biggest and best supported girls Football Club in Norfolk. Football provides friendship, fun, fresh air, fitness , sometimes a little heartbreak but above all most parents will agree that their child is more confident through playing football.

As a reward for their hard work winning the 2015/16 U11 league, the players were treated to a wonderful experience playing against Norwich City Academy and Kings Lynn Elite in a round robin format. The heat was incredible for the boys. However, some lovely football was played by all 3 teams which was a pleasure to watch.

We would like to thank Norwich City Academy for the invite and hospitality in what was a memorable day.

TUESDAY FRIENDSHIP CLUB On 12th July Derek Heffer was our entertainment for the afternoon. He gave us a general knowledge questionnaire, which may sound very boring but it was great fun. Everyone enjoyed it. The afternoon was rounded up with tea and biscuits.

We went on an outing to Bury St. Edmunds on 13th July, the weather was very kind to us with lots to see and do. We had a lady coach driver who was very nice and helpful. Very nice outing.

26th July saw Ruth Smith visit us. Her talk was titled “The day I was a raindrop” that sounds strange but it was about her time in a school play complete with actions of what she had to do - very funny. Her auntie made a costume for this play. Auntie was very talented with her sewing machine and was always making things for Ruth. We heard all about her time at school which was hilarious.

Ruth was raised by her Nanny and other members of the family; they lived in London and were very close. Nanny thought she was ‘POSH’ dropping her h’s when speaking, but she was a true Londoner. Ruth’s talks are very funny and entertaining. Excellent afternoon.

During the weekend 14/15th June at the Taverham Tournament over 20 girls teams from Norfolk and Suffolk taking part in 6 different age groups. This was a fantastic weekend at Hinks Meadow which culminated in Taverham United U14 s and a Taverham U10s winning their age groups.

GIRLGUIDING IN TAVERHAM NEEDS YOU

Jumble Sale

Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section in Taverham, Thorpe Marriott and Drayton are very vibrant and many girls aged between 5 and 14 meet in their units each week for 1 – 2 hours.

Activities can vary depending on the age group and can include a sleepover at rainbows a weekend/week away at brownies, guides and senior section. All our current leaders/unit helpers are committed and thoroughly enjoy their experiences every week.

BUT – yes there is a BUT .......... we need more leaders/unit helpers to assist in units, to run a new unit and to prevent any of them from closing. All our current units have waiting lists in the District, some are very, very long!

We currently have two Rainbow units in Taverham, both run on a Thursday from 4:00 – 5:00 pm, but the current leaders of one are standing down in December. We need to find some helpers so that it can continue to run and our Wednesday Brownie unit in Thorpe Marriott is thriving but again an extra pair of hands would be good, both to start in September.

Can you come and help? It could be you that makes a difference to many young people’s lives.

No qualifications are needed, just a friendly smile and a jovial nature will do and, of course, being able to come along to meetings on a weekly basis.

TAVERHAM YOUTH CENTRE

Hello Readers, We hope you all enjoyed the summer holiday and for our younger residents; that you are settling into your new school year group☺.

In July we only opened for 2 weeks before we closed for the school holidays. The Junior members enjoyed a general knowledge team quiz. For their last night of the term the Junior and Senior members had planned a party with disco lights, music, bubble machine, party food and a water fight but this was rescheduled due to a majority of our junior members attending the school play and our senior members on school camp.

Despite this the Junior members who did attend still enjoyed a water fight at the end of the evening.

The clubs re-open the week beginning 12th September.

New members are always welcome. For times and groups see Taverham Village Hall Listing (page 14).

Please be aware that these valuable youth and community projects cannot open without the kind support of adult volunteers. What a year at Taverham Junior School!

Celtic and Roman times. Finally, we counted the steps down to the dungeon and pretended we were back 1200 years so that we could pretend to be Romans. We all had a great day.

Year 5: Space buggies we built Space Buggies because our topic was ‘Space’. We carefully planned how to make these. Half way through construction, our teacher gave us a motor, motor holder and elastic band. We learnt how to use a working motor to make our buggies move and how to make the buggies. We enjoyed that we also got to race our buggies against other people’s buggies.

Pancake making We made ancient Greek pancakes; it was very fun and they were yummy! These are the steps to making pancakes: We measured out 70g of plain flour, poured 250 ml in with the flour then mixed it all together in a big bowl. The teachers poured some mixture in to the pan and showed us how to cook them. We then put them on a plate and added sesame seeds and honey, just like the Greeks did.

When we got to eat them they were lovely, but we also learnt how to measure and cook simple pancakes.

Making Viking boats before we made our boats we planned it out in a booklet. It took us about 2 days to plan and colour our designs. When we were making our boats we had partners or groups of 3. We learnt that boats in those days were Viking’s transportation. We enjoyed testing and floating our boats and seeing how many ‘animals’ it could hold.

Making Greek pots When we made the Greek pots we had to start a second time as it didn’t work the first time. The clay was very tricky and hard to mould. It took a week to make the whole thing and once we finished we spray painted it gold. After spray painting we added designs in black paint. To make the mould softer we added water. It was enjoyable and we learnt how to use clay and carefully create designs.

Year 6: Bottle rockets On the Friday of SAT’s week our teachers and staff decided that we should have a reward as the tests were over and have some fun. We bought in1 litre bottles and got in to groups of 2, 3 or 4. We decorated them carefully, creatively and artistically. No bottle (or design) was the same. As the bottles ascended through the, the staff decided that prizes should be given to the farthest flying rocket, the prettiest and the one that went the highest. After that we consumed a rocket ice-lolly and chatted non-stop. It was a really hot but fun day!

Caythorpe (the Year 6 residential) At Caythorpe we did 10 activities over the course of 3 days. Each one lasted an hour and a half. There were high activities and low ones and the best yet scariest one was the high ropes. This was an obstacle course in the sky! The trapeze jump was absolutely terrifying too. You had to climb up a pole then jump on to a trapeze. On this trip we learned perseverance, teamwork and trust.

Y6 singers This year was the first year the Mrs L.C. got to help Year 6 to put on an amazing performance for the summer concert. We blew the roof off the hall and even made Mrs Penwill cry with our beautiful version of ‘Thank You for the Music’. We made everyone clap along to ‘We Are the Champions’ and put a smile on everyone’s faces with ‘Happy’. With help from our inspirational vocal coach and many weeks of practicing we put on a wonderful finale and warmed everyone’s hearts. Everyone came together to make a beautiful card for Mrs L.C. to say ‘thank you’ for everything.

Inter-house rounders The rounders competition was very enjoyable; we did it in our school houses. We held it at the big field and 6SM won. It lasted 1 day and we had an excellent time. There were lots of star players but everyone joined in and had a great time. We hope to do something like this again.

The Space Trip At ‘The Space’ in Norwich we experienced many scenarios that might take place in our lives including: fire drills, stranger danger, drowning and medical situations. The Matthew Project was also there spreading awareness of cigarettes and drugs. The organisation, known as ‘The Crucial Crew’, helps children to understand the angers of life and how to deal with them. We learnt about high voltage electricity and the pain it causes. The members of staff were extremely helpful and very knowledgeable. Along with this we consumed information about online and social media; how alarming it can be. We enjoyed this trip as we got to experience it all with our classmates and the staff that were willing to teach us.

We had an action-packed year at Taverham Junior School. The school council, with the help of some friends, gathered together to discuss their highlights of the year. Below are the results of their discussion: Year 3: Poppy Line We travelled on a steam train and arrived at Holt station. We did 4 activities in Holt: being prepared for bombing; learning about planes; helping out in a cottage and making lunch. Later on there was an air raid siren, so we had to put our heads on the floor and cover our ears until it stopped. We learnt about how evacuees lived and what houses looked like in WWII. We learned also how hard it was to live in a world war and also discovered that names back then were different. We enjoyed the steam train journey because it felt very old-fashioned and enjoyed everything because they made it a special day.

Egyptian Day All the Year 3’s did an Egyptian day. Everybody dressed up like Egyptians. First we did lots of fun activities and my favourite one was making the sun discs. After lunch we had a festival and I was the chief servant and my friend was a dancer. Everything was really fun and everyone enjoyed it. At the festival we had lots of yummy food. The food was short pieces of cheese, grapes, bites of apple and lots more.

Egyptian play Emira and Bethan are going to tell you about the Year 3 Egyptian play. There were dancers, pyramids, Tutankhamen and Howard Carter. We think that Mrs Draper did a great job with the background, scenery and props. She was so kind that she let us write our favourite hieroglyphs on the background too. We enjoyed singing the play songs, especially ‘The King of the Dead’, and showing it to our parents. At the end it was amazing because we left the room to a rock song and had to ‘Walk like an Egyptian’.

Gardening On our gardening day 3P weeded the bed outside our classroom. It took forever but when we were finished we had a class photo. We moved the insects to a safer place. We enjoyed planting the seeds as it was a new experience. The class learned about the lifecycle of plants too! In our garden we found ladybirds, snails and slugs.

Year 4: Robot Cake making everyone particularly enjoyed making a giant robot cake. While you weren’t cooking you planned out what you would put on your cake. When we were cooking we mixed the ingredients together. After a while we put the mixture in the oven for 20 minutes. When we took the cake out of the oven we left it to cool. When the cake was cool enough we started to ice and then used sweets we had brought in to decorate it. We enjoyed it because it was a change from the usual subjects. At the end of the day we all got a slice of the cake to take home. Everyone in the class thoroughly enjoyed the project.

Circus Skills This activity was actually done by all the year groups.

There was a circus tent up in the playground all week and we got to meet and learn from the performers. We did a lot of activities, such as diablo. We enjoyed spinning plates too, I was really rubbish at this but I want to try again. The plates were fun. We learnt other things, like juggling, walking the tightrope and how to dance. We enjoyed watching the circus with a silly clown. After the circus week we were all talking about it!

Celtic Day On May 17th Year 4 had a Celtic Day. We started off in our own classrooms and then rotated around to other classrooms during the day. There were four different activities. These included making plaits, learning about Celtic clothing, lighting fires outside and weaving. We learnt a lot about how the Celts lived and had a lot of fun.

Volcanoes In the Summer Term we learnt about volcanoes. This was mainly about Vesuvius the ‘freezing volcano’. We made our own volcano models and cakes (we even got to eat the cakes!). Some people even made a working volcano with baking soda. We have also done some volcano poetry that we all liked doing.

Colchester Castle On Thursday 9th June Year 4 went to Colchester Castle. The museums were full of things to wear, do, touch and play with. A man was dressed up as a Roman and let people try on his helmet. Half a roundhouse was stuck on the wall, which we could go inside to do activities. We got to wear a Roman toga and use the shields too. There was also chain mail that we could touch. There was also a bread roll left from Boudicca’s fire. There were Celtic clothes to try on and role-play with. We went in to a different room and built houses from 11

Monday 23 May Stanhope to Tynemouth via the ‘Waskerly Way’ (an old railway line) but still 34 miles to the finish!

Having planned for weeks our themed summer social ‘Royal Festivities’ was a great success.

Guests (our own members and from other WI’s) were invited to attend in ‘posh frock and tiaras’ to arrive in time to greet our special guest.

As she was on great grandma duties our wonderful Queen Elizabeth II asked one of our members to stand in for her…..we did hope she might arrive by helicopter but she decided a walk across the field and entrance by the back door was more fitting. On arrival having been greeted by cheers and laughter she was presented with a bouquet which being without her maids in waiting she left behind at the end of the afternoon (Don’t worry we made sure she got it back). Pimms and Canapes were followed by tea and cake made especially …wait for it! by our queen look alike, a women of many talents. A royal themed quiz and a hysterical game of pass the tin….don’t ask! ended the event with a flourish. Our newly formed catering committee and organizers were congratulated on a job very well done.

Last month I mentioned our archives. We are now thinking seriously about our inauguration anniversary early in 2018 and looking through our records for past presidents we find there are some missing documents. Could I ask if there are any previous members or their families who may have records of our meetings August 1963 December 1975 or Committee Minutes January 1958 - September 1973 we would be delighted have them.

We celebrated 50 years of Star Trek, original series, for the Sci-Fi theme but alas even our display of some original Newsletter “X File” reports failed to secure the best dressed shield and are looking forward to discovering the theme for next year. Despite the very hot and humid conditions on the 20th July a good number attended to hear Stephen Pope present “Zeppelins over Norfolk”. It was difficult to appreciate the size of these huge airships and what we might now consider primitive methods of warfare particularly when the German pilots assumed they were dropping bombs on London and how our fighter aircraft were launched from barges being pulled by destroyers with little more than a rifle. It really does highlight how technology has progressed in the last 100 years.

I would like to introduce members of the Taverham Veterinary team over the next few newsletters. Guy Pitcher MA VetMB CertVR CertSAO CertSAS MRCVS has been instrumental in setting up and designing the new surgery in Aylsham. He qualified from Cambridge University in 1989, after which he spent a year at Bristol University training in their surgical department.

Guy’s special interest is orthopaedic surgery and he is one of the few vets in the UK who have further qualifications in orthopaedics, general surgery and radiology. Guy is passionate about the need for high quality yet affordable veterinary care in general practice and he has been a driving force behind the continual improvement in facilities and expertise within the Taverham Vets Group.

My case of the month is Sapphire, a beautiful 1 year old domestic long hair cat who presented with coughing, shortness of breath and a fever. X-rays showed evidence of fluid around the lungs and laboratory analysis of this was consistent with a pyothorax. A pyothorax is where infected fluid accumulates in the chest cavity resulting in collapse of the lungs and difficulty breathing. The condition is extremely serious as often cats and dogs are critically ill at the point of diagnosis. Treatment has to be aggressive and involves placing chest drains, flushing the chest cavity and providing intensive antibiotic therapy.

Sapphire came through the initial period of critical care which involved hospitalisation for nearly 10 days.

Throughout this period she seemed completely unconcerned about all veterinary care she needed and she appeared quite at home in the cat ward. Following discharge she has been on further antibiotic therapy and follow up radiographs have shown a steady and pleasing resolution of the infection.

The cause for a pyothorax is often not known. Occasionally it can result from the migration of an inhaled grass seed and this is most common in Spaniels who seem particularly good at charging through long grass and getting grass seeds in almost every available place! In Sapphire’s case the pyothorax probably resulted from the settling out of bacteria present in the blood stream into the chest cavity.

I am writing this article on a hot July day but by the time it appears in the Newsletter the new Table Tennis season will be upon us. Handicap Cup matches start in the week of 12th September, and League matches ‘kick off’ (apologies for the th football term) a week later on the 19 .

However, I fear that some of our older and more established players may not be fully ready for the ‘off’, unlike the younger ones in the Club who have regularly attended Club Friday evenings, played in the Summer League and attended the local Table Tennis Coaching Schools in the school holiday period.

Once more the Club will have five teams in the Norwich & District League. Will this be the year that the ‘A’ team climb back to the dizzy heights of the top flight? Can the ‘B’ team with increasing age and rickety bones survive again in Division 1?

Is it possible for the ‘C’ to be nearer the top of Division 2 after such a good year last season? Will the ‘D’ bounce back into Division 2 following relegation and last but not least can the young and improving ‘E’ team cause a few more match upsets and give the ‘D’ team a run for its money? Of course by April 2017 we will know the answers to all of these intriguing questions but for now and until then, watch this space in the Newsletter.

Before I forget, in spite of rain on the 9th July, the Club Tombola stall at the Fayre raised a record amount. I would like to thank all those who kindly and generously gave their time to help on the day, especially Margaret and Dennis Calver.

Sadly the weather did not permit the table tennis table to be ‘out’ for too long so that children and adults could try their hand at playing a sport that looks easy but isn’t. However, if you did manage to get a game despite the rain and the wetness of the grass, why not pop in to see us at a Club evening on a Friday? While the Taverham Fayre, and Taverham’s residents, and in particular, members of the NTP were being rained on I was receiving the same treatment just behind Reepham Station attending a farewell gathering of two very dear friends of the NTP, Jim Elliott and his wife who have run Mini Scrapbox for the best part of twenty years. Initially partially funded by Broadland District Council Jim and his team persuaded businesses not to throw away their unwanteds, paints, cardboard and any number of recyclable bits and pieces that schools, drama groups and youth groups that could not afford the commercial going rate for say a couple of metres of gold or silver material could obtain them from Scrapbox for a few pennies. Never a money making enterprise, they were all volunteers, and have been the saviour for hundreds of local groups. I once asked Jim if he had anything that resembled a ship’s bulkhead rivets for our 2009 production “Anything Goes”. Painting them on canvas wasn’t going to work. Whilst discussing this problem with Jim I noticed just behind him numerous bags of plastic milk bottle tops that would, if glued on to board and painted, be our rivets. Our set designer, Chris Wright, liked the idea, and wanted 300 of the caps, and all the same colour! We also needed a working porthole window. Again Jim provided the materials with twenty real life-size bolts and the plastic “glass” to finish it. I needed two fencing swords for “The Addams Family” duel between Lurch and Gomez. Jim produced a couple of ceremonial Scottish claymores that were too valuable to use in the fight but adorned the stage set.

On behalf of the NTP can I say a big thank you to my wee Scots buddy and the ’meme-sahib’ for all your support and help. Have a very well earned rest.

“Hairspray” (the hit musical) which is heading your way on Monday 28th November to Saturday 3rd of December is already into rehearsals with Producer Tracy Melton informing me that we may have to knock a hole through the library wall to accommodate the size of the band. It seems every musician wants to play in this one. There is a stipulation by the writers of the Musical that parts indicated as being played by a black actor or actress must be played by a black person and not by someone ‘made up to look like one’ (their words). This is where we need your help. We are looking for residents of the black community who would like to try their hand at appearing in what everybody tells me is a show not to be missed. I must confess I’ve not seen the musical or the film yet. If you feel you can help then please ring Tracy on 01603 869317. The Band has experienced many highpoints over the years including playing for HM The Queen at Sandringham and Prince Charles at the flower show.

We have played concerts in Germany and Holland both provided us with some very happy memories.

However, it is perhaps our recent trip to Belgium which has provided us with our biggest honour.

In July we travelled to Ypres, playing a concert in the town square beside the magnificent Cloth Hall. The foundation stone was originally laid in 1200 although the Hall was, of course, laid to ruin in the WWI. It was subsequently rebuilt to its former glory. It is a magnificent setting and the enthusiastic crowd gave a standing ovation after the two hour performance.

Later that evening we had the incredible honour of playing at the Menin Gate ceremony.

The panels of the gate bear the names of 54,896 soldiers who have no known grave. Every day at 8:00 pm the last post is played at the gate. This has taken place every day since 1927; the only break was during WWII. Taverham Band was invited to perform after the last post and we decided to play the theme music from the film “Saving Private Ryan” entitled “Hymn to the Fallen”.

The crowds gathered well before the performance and then, shortly after the silence, the lone snare drum introduced the piece.

The haunting melody crescendos and then dies away leaving the lone snare drum. This piece truly did justice to the proceedings.

The next day we were given a tour of the Tyne Cot Cemetery before visiting the preserved trenches at Sanctuary Wood and the German Cemetery at Langemark.

This article cannot to describe the emotions the Band members experienced during this trip and our performance at the Menin Gate will, perhaps, remain our greatest honour. VALE PROBUS CLUB A LIFE IN THE LAW COURTS

Our scheduled speaker having had to cancel, we welcomed Nick Butcher who had stood in at the last minute to fill the gap. Nick has spent 45 years in the local courts, ranging from his memories as a young articled clerk, through many years of advocacy as a solicitor, up to a more recent role as a Deputy District Judge. All that equipped him with a large fund of anecdotes and experiences which he shared with us (without once referring to a note) wittily and informatively.

Because I remember them myself, I particularly enjoyed being taken back in time to the old Assizes with the visiting “Red Judges”, the civic coach, the colourful ceremonies with all the high County Officers, the readings of the ancient Proclamations of General Gaol Delivery and Oyer and Terminer, and the early adjournments for long sociable lunches in the Judges’ Lodging House. Nick also had chucklesome tales to tell of the traditional Magistrates Courts which ran in most small towns in the 1960s, chaired by old-style squires with the local constabulary handling the prosecution in those preCPS days.

A lot of information was also painlessly imparted about the huge variety of judicial bodies and human problems with which Nick and his co-professionals were involved. He moved on to his reflections on the changes that have taken place during his time and those currently happening in response to modern pressures: how the old localised “GP” role of solicitors has given way to working in specialist teams in huge firms with consequent escalation of costs; teaching old dogs new tricks in the transfer to computer-based procedures; the huge “whiplash industry” (soon to be restricted) generated by our compensation culture; and the previously unthinkable spread of advertising by solicitors.

He wound up with a fascinating analysis of the mammoth task, caused by Brexit, of unscrambling the mass of European law (Human Rights being only a fraction) that has become embedded in our system.

Not surprisingly we responded with warm applause in appreciation of such a masterly performance at such short notice!

Taverham Allotments

NORTHERN DISTRIBUTOR ROAD (NDR) The NDR features extensive environmental measures that will help it disappear into the landscape, add thousands of natural trees and shrubs to the countryside, protect wildlife and enhance biodiversity.

For every mature tree felled, more than 5 saplings will be planted.

Wildlife: 10 barn owl boxes and 100 other bird boxes for various species of birds will be put up. 1700 great crested newts and smooth newts have been moved to 4 new newt ponds and improvements have been made to other ponds. 860 frogs and 90 toads have been relocated. A newt sniffer dog was used to help locate the newts.

Drainage and water: 30 drainage lagoons will be created to improve water quality, protect streams, lakes and ground water, along the NDR. Roundabouts: The roundabout on the Fakenham Road (1067) should be finished by midNovember. The roundabout on Fir Covert Road should be finished about 1st week in December. The opening of the NDR (weather permitting) is planned for late December 2017.

I look on September as a late summer month rather than the beginning of autumn. As such we are still seeing our allotment labours continuing to come to fruition. By this time of year we have moved on from harvesting peas and broad beans, but the more temperature sensitive legumes, runner beans and French beans, are still going strong. I have found this summer to be good for runner beans, which may be due to the high rainfall in June when the plants were growing fast before flowering began in early July. The other allotment mainstay that is still producing well is courgettes. At the end of the growing season these usually get infected with powdery mildew fungus. This affects the leaves but not the fruit, but does signal the beginning of the end for this year.

One major group of crops that have not fared well this year are the brassicas, in particular cabbages and cauliflowers. This is because June brought an infestation of diamondback moths. This little beast came across the channel in clouds to cover most of England, including unfortunately our allotment site.

I have netting to keep the other major insect pest, cabbage white butterflies, from reaching my plants, but the moth is much smaller and could easily get through the netting to lay its eggs. This resulted in myriads of small caterpillars that can reduce a cabbage plant to a skeletal image in a few weeks.

There is apparently no control for this pest so all we could do is write off many of our plants for this year. I still have hopes, however that the sprout and broccoli plants may yield something worthwhile, since they grow for a longer time and the moth dies off in the cooler weather of autumn and early winter. The wet weather of early summer also had a bad effect on the onion crop. There are very many fungal and bacterial diseases that affect onions and these are promoted by damp condition at the beginning of the growing season.

For me it is the unpredictability of which crops will succeed and which will fail each year that makes owning an allotment such a challenge and joy.

WENSUM VALLEY BIRDWATCHING SOCIETY

Trinity Church, Thorpe Marriott Friday Evening Open House

The Society has had a busy time over the summer months. At our June indoor meeting we welcomed Lucy McRobert, whose stimulating talk was titled ‘Ospreys and Us: How to Create a Conservation Success Story’. The theme of “letting the public take ownership” in regards to conservation became evident during her talk.

She told us how the involvement of schools and wide publicity had ensured the success of the project to re-introduce Ospreys to England and Wales, while giving us the history of the project and many fascinating facts about the migration and habits of these beautiful birds of prey.

Field trips and other activities have been too numerous to give full details here, but there are always fuller reports available on the WVBS website - http://www.wvbs.co.uk/ There were two morning walks around the Wensum Valley area, led by Alwyn, who knows his birds and his area well. It is perhaps unsurprising that the number of members attending the walks was much higher at Bintree Mill on a fine day than at Great Ryburgh on a wet and murky one. The Bintree Mill walk was a privilege granted by the landowner, and gave views of a cuckoo, 5 buzzards and a family of grey wagtails during a beautiful walk along the river. By contrast the Great Ryburgh walk explored local hedgerows and a scrape near the village. Both trips were a wonderful opportunity to learn about local birds in the company of an expert. Later in the month there was an all-day visit to Strumpshaw Fen concentrating on the birds in the morning and the dragonflies and butterflies in the afternoon.

The stars of the show here were four Hobbies in front of Fen Hide demonstrating their aerial prowess in hunting dragonflies and frequently eating them on the wing!

The Society also participated in the BioBlitz at Scarning Water Meadows, Dereham, where all types of wildlife, not just birds, were recorded.

The weekend included an evening bat walk, an overnight moth trap that produced a popular Elephant Hawk Moth and many stalls and walks.

Some 300 different species were recorded and the final survey totals are planned to be on the NWT website in due course.

MOW & GROW - A SOCIAL ENTERPRISE Assisting people to live independent lives Having a garden to look after when you are disabled, unwell or simply ageing can be quite a challenge. Perhaps you’ve had a spell in hospital and it has got out of control? Maybe you just can’t cope with the physical demands of gardening anymore? Not everyone can depend on family to help ... so who can you turn to?

In 2006, our first Social Enterprise Mow & Grow was formed to address this concern in a unique way.

Originally a Neighbourhood Watch gardening project we soon realised we could make positive changes to some of the wider issues within our society so we started our second Social Enterprise, The Grow Organisation in 2008.

So, what do we do and how do we do it?

Grow is about growing minds and reconnecting people with food and the natural environment. Our focus is on improving our general health and wellbeing, strengthening our communities and helping to preserve natural resources.

Grow specialises in working with individuals facing multiple barriers to social inclusion such as physical and mental health issues, drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, financial debt and social isolation. Activities at the Hub are aimed at building confidence and improving fitness by teaching people how to grow and eat the right foods.

So what does Mow do?

We restore and maintain gardens and our service has multiple beneficiaries: • Individuals requiring assistance to manage their gardens and remain in their homes • Routes to employment for individuals seeking progression We have skilled Gardening Team Leaders who work with volunteers to mow and strim grass, de-weed and tidy borders, cut hedges and prune low level trees.

We undertake gardening projects for private households, churches, schools, commercial businesses and hold numerous long term gardening contracts with Local Authorities and Housing Associations. All Mow & Grow staff are enhanced DBS checked and Designated

overgrown plot and watching the delight on a tenant’s face when they know they can step into their garden again.

We offer regular or ad-hoc maintenance visits and our professional staff also undertakes larger projects such as fencing, turf laying, seeding lawns and laying patios or decks.

MODERN SEQUENCE DANCE CLUB The month of July saw us simply ticking over without the ability to introduce new dances due to the incapacity of Irene. Not that we missed much in the way of fresh dances during that period for, other than two waltzes, the rest of the new ones fell into the category of “don’t bother there’s no future here.” We were asked to feature a few of those new sequences, known to some of our dancers, which I played reluctantly as I respect Irene’s feelings and do not want her to feel she’s letting us down by not being able to demonstrate those dances with me. As I just said, during our period of inactivity the only dances worth introducing have been two waltzes which are waiting in the wings and, as soon as we can demonstrate again, then at least one will be presented.

It was brought to our notice that “Mountain Ash Foxtrot” had been tried at other venues recently, so as we had introduced it to our dancers four years ago, we briefly walked it through again and played it. It wasn’t well received four years ago and its appeal does not seem to have made any progress. Seems we were right to drop the dance a long time ago!

THE NORWICH ELECTRONIC ORGAN & KEYBOARD CLUB

DRAYTON HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION

We meet on the last Tuesday of every month at Drayton Village Hall, with entertainment from popular professional organists from around the country. The evening starts at 7:30pm, there is an interval with refreshments and a raffle, and it finishes at 10pm. There is no extra membership fee; entrance is £6 at the door.

We last had a visit from Ken Abel in February 2015 when he shared his knowledge about Fuchsias with us. He returned as our guest in July when his "chosen" subject was the Hosta plant. He explained that he was no expert, just self-taught. Many gardeners admire hostas but on the downside, so do slugs and snails. The plant originates from China and Japan and produces leaves of green (so many different shades), some have cream markings. Some plants produce stems of flowers but these are insignificant. The leaves of the plant vary in size, the smallest being about the size of a thumb nail, the largest growing several feet long. In total there are over 100 different plants all belonging to the lily family. Ken had his own remedy for preventing pests getting to his plants (his own concoction) and all his plants were grown in pots. Unfortunately the weather has not been good for hostas this year and members were disappointed that Ken had no plants for sale.

This month, on the 10th we will be holding our Autumn Show in the Village Hall, open to the public at 2:30 p.m. Our club meeting is on the 6th September and our special guest is Ben Potterton (Radio Norfolk and much travelled horticulturalist). If you don't know what Sanguisorbas are please come and join us to find out more, plus their associated perennials. Village Hall 7:30 p.m.

Just a mention that the Plant Sale earlier in the year made approximately £450 profit and the Strawberry Tea raised £137.

Tuesday July 26th John Bowdler took a break from his duties on the Mighty Wurlitzer in the ballroom at Blackpool Tower to play his first concert at our club, bringing with him his Technics GA3 electronic organ.

John’s connection with the audience and his passion for playing the organ were obvious from the very beginning.

Starting the evening with an up-tempo Swing and Dixie medley immediately set the relaxed and warm atmosphere of the whole concert and showcased John’s style - flawlessly moving between traditional organ, piano, strings and other orchestral voicing, effectively giving the music a fresh approach at every change. Sambas, rumbas, marches, polkas and ballads followed, as did Chopin’s ‘Nocturne in Eb’, ‘Romance’ played on the classical guitar voice, George Formby’s ukulele, Winifred Atwell’s piano, Franz Lambert’s composition ‘Dreaming Ballerina’ and John Barry’s ‘Somewhere in Time’ to name just a few.

John also brought along a module incorporating additional sampled ‘Blackpool Wurlitzer sounds’ and made good use of this, playing in traditional open harmony style and getting us in the mood for several sing-alongs. Added to this, the sight and sound of 10 fingers effortlessly galloping up and down the keys when playing in piano style was both captivating and stunning and kept our eyes and ears focused all evening.

With many in the audience giving him a standing ovation and asking ‘when can we book John again’ I feel I can confidently say the concert was up there with the best of the best and am delighted to announce that we have already arranged a return visit for July 2018.

Tuesday September 27th Steve Lowdell Steve not only plays, but entertains, delighting his many audiences at music festivals and club concerts. He is well-known and respected throughout the country and on the continent for his highly-personalised, easy style of music and is equally at home playing electronic organ, piano, synthesiser or keyboards; his music ranges from classics, ballads, pop, boogie woogie and of course, jazz! Nobody goes to sleep while this man is on stage, even other musicians are delighted to spend time listening to the many styles and forms of his music – an evening certainly not to be missed!

DRAYTON FLOWER CLUB Adele Kent had us all foxed at the Club's July meeting.

Adele's title was 'I've got a little list' so we all sat back expecting Gilbert and Sullivan operettas to feature in the arrangements. Not so! The list was of the demonstrator's favourite garden features. We had the pleasure of a wild flower corner, an herbaceous border and so on to the more formal aspect of a garden. Adele's use of cool colours made us feel cool and calm even if it was the hottest of evenings and the sound of the Church bells being rung added to the occasion. Unfortunately poor Adele was on the stage under a barrage of spot lights!

The demonstrator in September is Wendy Goodiff and 'A stitch in time'. We have invited a representative from the East Coast Truckers to the meeting to receive a cheque from the President following what we hope will have been a successful coffee morning in August.

Tickets are on sale for our Open Meeting in October, everyone is most welcome. The demonstrator is Nick Grounds, the flower arranging auctioneer, who no doubt will have more hilarious tales of goings on at auctions.

NORFOLK SAFEGUARDING ADULTS WEEK Norfolk – united against abuse When: 12 - 18 September What: The aim is to raise public awareness in Norfolk of adult abuse and inform the public of how to identify and report abuse. Call 0344 800 8020 In Norfolk, 2,709 safeguarding adult concerns were raised between April 2015 and March 2016. In England there are over 100,000 cases reported of adults being abused annually. Most often it is carried out by someone known to the harmed person.

In our local parish, we probably know someone who needs help with their money, their bills or shopping or support to get around or carry out daily tasks. Often there is a formal or informal arrangement in place with social services, a care home, carer, friend or relative. Sometimes, though, things may go wrong. The person needing support may feel uncomfortable, afraid or hurt in the situation or find their money or possessions are being taken from them.

Adults can suffer from all sorts of abuse. As well as physical, emotional and sexual abuse, people can experience financial abuse; when people take money or belongings without asking. People can be neglected, when people who are there to help do not look after people properly or neglect themselves to extent that this puts them at risk.

The individual causing the harm may be a stranger, but statistics show, more often than not it is someone they know and usually feel safe with, often in a position of trust and power, such as a health or care professional, a family member or relative or neighbour.

But everyone has a right to feel safe, to make their own decisions and to be respected and listened to, and live free from abuse or neglect.

So look out for the signs of abuse. These can include someone who looks dirty, is not dressed properly or has an injury that is difficult to explain. Other signs can include someone who seems frightened around certain people, seems unusually down or withdrawn or who finds money missing.

Trust your instinct, if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Even if you’re not sure whether these signs mean abuse, you should still report them to Norfolk Social Services. You can report your concern anonymously but please give us as much information as possible so that we can follow it up.
