Taverham Parish Council, in conjunction with Wensum Valley Golf Club, is holding a “BATTLES OVER” celebration at the Golf Club on the 11th November from 3:30pm to the lighting of the Taverham Beacon at 7:00 pm and beyond for those who wish to continue to celebrate. Cost £10 per head, for a ‘sit down’ two-course authentic wartime meal, that could well have been on the menu a hundred years ago.

Tickets are available from Taverham Parish Council Office, Wensum Valley Golf Club, Abbotts at Victoria Road, Pymm and Co at Acres Way, and Williams Way in Drayton

MESSY CHURCH Messy Church takes place at St. Edmund’s Church on the second Tuesday of each month from 3:15 pm until 5:00 pm. recently We have been talking about ways we can follow Jesus.

During our craft activities we discussed magnets, and had great fun making magnetic water compasses and found it very easy to find north each time. We also spoke about looking at the stars at night to help find the way.

You may remember the three kings followed the brightest star to Bethlehem which led them to the stable where baby Jesus was born.

THE FRIENDS OF NIGHTINGALE The Friends of Nightingale finished the school year with a bang at our Farmyard themed Summer Fair! We raised approx £1100 which has set us up nicely for the £5000 target we have set ourselves to go towards new books for the school library. Many thanks to all that attended; the stall holders, parents & carers, teachers, dance troops and the children who did such amazing performances. Also, a huge thanks to Taverham Lions who did our BBQ for us. We hope you had as much fun as we did!

Over the summer with our fundraising, we purchased and fitted a brand new bike shelter and scooter rack in the school. It is lovely to see it being so well used already.

Thanks to all who volunteered on this task. We couldn’t have done it without you all!

To continue our fundraising we are holding a Pamper and Shopping evening at the School on Friday November 16th 7:30pm! The event is open to all the community. Entrance is £2 which includes a glass of fizz and we have some brilliant local therapists carrying out mini treatments like Reiki, mini facials and massages. We also have some fab local stalls such as Rustic Butterflies cards, Tropic Skincare, Creative Lincs gifts, Blossom Tree bath bombs and more! We hope to see you there!

This month sees a reorganisation of units within the District, our leaders are committed to running units but sometimes, days, times and meeting places need to be changed. With this is mind, we would like to welcome Holly & Claire who will be running 2nd Thorpe Marriott Brownies from October half term. Holly came forward in the summer and Claire on board since, so we have been working to accommodate their personal preferences and finding a home for them to run their meetings from. So their new meetings time will be Thursday‛s at Thorpe Marriott Village Hall from 5.30 – 6.45 pm. We welcome them to our district guiding and hope they enjoy their time in guiding. Other changes have been made – Wednesday Brownies has moved to a Thursday at Taverham Scout Hut, where three units have merged together to become two, 1st & 2nd Taverham Brownies will run the same programme but run in separate rooms and slightly different times. Once all their spaces have been filled, we can then proceed to invite new girls to join our unit in Thorpe Marriott, so by the time you read this, we hope to be up and running. Drayton Brownies still continue to run on a Monday at Bob Carter Centre. All our units have long waiting lists, so if you are on one of them please be patient and your time will come soon I hope!

Hello Readers, We hope you enjoyed half term and are now preparing yourselves for the Christmas period fast approaching.  During September we have enjoyed welcoming all the new members that have joined our club’s. Due to the high rise in membership and attendance of our Junior club (Wednesday) we can no longer accept any new members at present. We will review this again soon and keep you posted of any changes to this. New members are still welcome on a Tuesday and Friday.

The members have expressed that they would like a trip to the local bowling alley (on the week we will closed for the Panto in December). I have applied for a grant to part cover the costs, so fingers crossed we will be successful.

In September the members made favours to give as a gift to someone who had made them happy during the summer holidays and enjoyed making and eating their own pizza.

The clubs are open as follows (term time only); Tuesday, 7:00-9:00pm for school years 8, 9, 10 & 11 Wednesday, 6:30-8:30pm for school years 5, 6, 7 & 8 Friday, 7:30-9:30pm for ages 13 – 17 For new members (Tuesday’s and Friday’s only) the first session is FREE then £1 entry thereafter. This includes access to/use of all the facilities (pool, table tennis, Xbox, WII, air hockey, table football, tuck shop) and free refreshments. TAVERHAM HISTORY SOCIETY

We needed to make changes to our programmed speaker for September and having done this early in the year we were confident that all would be well. Again after another change in commitments led to yet another speaker we remained happy that all would be well. At the meeting we waited and wondered why she had not arrived and as the time grew closer for the start a WI husband rushed in to say that he had received a phone call to say that the replacement speaker had lost her car keys and was stranded at her place of work. So after a rescue dash along the NDR Catherine Temple arrived to wow the meeting with her story of how as a practicing pharmacist she became a cheese maker. Based at Copys Farm, Wighton, a wide variety of different cheeses are produced with the milk from their own herd and are available at outlets across Norfolk.

After the anxiety at the start of the meeting it turned round to be a very successful evening, we are the WI and adaptable but now and then have to call on help from our families….many thanks to David Ruggles for being our life boat this time.

November is our Annual Meeting where committee members are elected for the following year. The committee for 2018 our 60th Anniversary, as well as the normal day to day arrangements, has worked hard on all the special events to celebrate. Being a member of this committee I want to say how much I have enjoyed working within what has been a great team.

The finale for Taverham WI’s 60th year is an event at St Edmund’s Church on Saturday 8th December at 2:00 pm and we invite you to join us to celebrate the friendship and support that is the Women’s Institute.

Our programme until the end of the year: November 9th:Annual Meeting, December 8th: 60 years Celebration at St Edmund’s, December 14th: Patsy Rose – Singalong with Guitar.

There are also some bus pass days planned – we never stand still!

On Wednesday, 21st November, 7.30pm, Taverham Village Hall, Chris Armstrong, will present “Mustard, Boots & Beer”. Tickets are £2.50, pay on the door and there will be our usual raffle & refreshments at very reasonable prices.

We may think we know all there is about these famous businesses in Norwich but as we often prove, there is always something new to learn and discover. You will not wish to miss our last event of the year.

Thank you to Dennis Calver and the table tennis team for kindly moving their match to another evening enabling us to have the Old Hall to accommodate our high numbers, it is much appreciated by everyone.

A brief report of our Annual General Meeting will appear next month.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the intriguing presentation by Barbara Miller entitled, a Bishop, a Quaker and a roll of wire netting. During the extremely professional presentation Barbara explained that despite a difficult period in the history of Norwich how successful these individuals were in providing faith, hope, jobs, innovation and prosperity to so many.

It is hoped that our programme of events for 2019 will be available for you to take away and update your diaries at our November presentation above.

Cyclist badge. After learning about the importance of safety checks and cycle maintenance (including oiling the chain & puncture repair) they set off from Whitwell Station camp site to Taverham Scout HQ, cycling a distance of 8 miles along Marriotts Way. Once there, all the Cubs participated in cycle skills training and each designed a cycling safety poster. Even after all that exercise, the Seeonee Cubs then stayed on for an overnight camp, pitching their tents, preparing their tea, washing up and then completing a nightline activity! They slept well (!) and then finished off their weekend doing archery & whittling an elder whistle.

Apart from manning the football car park to boost our welfare fund we have been quiet this month although a small group of members is already planning the roster for “Santa’s sleigh” and, as I mentioned in last month’s newsletter, we always appreciate any help offered by members of our community. It is probably a good time to highlight some of our most recent donations, which have been made through the generous support of many in our area of activity.

As you know we try to help local organizations, especially when they fall under one of the groups defined in our trust mandate. However, there are often occasions when something dreadful is happening not on our doorstep, but thousands of miles away and I would like to think that the famine in East Africa is a case that you would agree we should support and we have done that with a donation through our international organisation.

The monies raised from our football car park have been shared with five groups: The Hamlet Centre which supports children and adults with disabilities and complex health needs and, with our and others help, they no longer feel alone.

Musical Keys which provides a service to people of all ages with disabilities. Their programme of music, movement and art based activities help participants learn new skills and build confidence.

Nelson’s Journey supports children up to their 18th birthday who have experienced the death of a significant person in their life. The aim is to bring a smile back to their faces.

Ringland Church; We have liaised with Rev Paul Seabrook on several occasions and offered help when we can and there is some restoration work needed on this lovely little church in our neighbouring parish.

N.N.U.H. Only a small donation but we were pleased to provide some more slippers for those patients who are admitted without all their essentials at hand, particularly the elderly.

So once again it is no surprise that on behalf of your local Lions club I have to thank everyone who has generously supported us for the past thirty years.

Our busy festive season is fast approaching but let’s first take a moment to reflect on our recent outings!

Firstly, can we thank those of you who attended our October concerts. I hope you enjoyed the shows, your support is very much appreciated. We included many war time, RAF related, tunes as well as some West End classics! It really was a magnificent show and your response made the production effort so worthwhile.

The logistics of putting on the show are many and varied and there is so much work that goes on behind the scenes to make the shows happen. The hall is booked many months in advance and the band and junior band are then rehearsed several weeks before the show.

During this time the shows are promoted and ticket sales systems are put in place. On the Thursday before the show, an army of volunteers build the stage as, of course, it is not a permanent fixture – if only it were! It takes about 2 hours to build the stage before the extensive percussion section can be placed in position.

The lights and PA are then checked before we can finally head off home.

On the evening of the show the catering team arrive to prepare the interval refreshments, it also provides a buffet for the band and crew after Saturday’s show!

After Saturday’s show the audience leaves and the task of dismantling the stage begins! It’s hard work but your enthusiastic response makes it so worthwhile.

possible. We are quite lucky in that a third of our plot is taken up with soft fruits which apart from pruning are pretty much self-sufficient. I have a feeling I may have mentioned before that fruit is the one thing that can be relied on every year to provide a good crop. This year was the third year for our existing strawberry bed and the fruits were noticeably smaller. Fortunately, they love to put out runners which grow new plants  I have dug out the old bed and will use the new plants as my main crop next year.

Last year we were not in the position to grow much from seed due to the available space being taken up with a bathroom suite. As, at last, this is now in, we can use our conservatory as a place to grow seeds.

Over the winter I invested in a heated propagator (Garland Super7 Electric Heated Windowsill Propagator G51) which was not that expensive and makes growing plants from seeds easy over the cold period.

I appreciate that being a part time gardener, I am less in control over the environment that I expect my plants to grow in. I have to accept that sometimes, the wildlife see my plot as a picnic area when I am unable to make the trip for a couple of weeks. But I still get excited seeing plants develop out of the tiniest of seeds and sometimes when things go right, it’s an absolute joy. I would recommend giving it a go. DEFIBRILATORS Some time ago I asked for help with listing all the available defibrillators in the area. Many thanks to those who sent details to me. TAVERHAM FAYRE At a recent committee meeting we discussed at length the pros and cons of our “Swinging Sixties” themed Fayre last June. Most feedback received was extremely positive as the day was greatly aided by the fine weather and the colourful displays created by stallholders. The few negatives can be addressed easily for next year and most agreed avoiding the Lord Mayor’s Celebration encourages visitors to enjoy our event without distraction.

The date and our theme for next year will be announced at the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 14th November at 7:30pm in Taverham Village Hall. This will be followed by a stallholders meeting when your committee will be looking forward to receiving your comments as this is your opportunity to help us to create an even better Fayre next year.

The Case for the Defence

I hope that everyone is keeping well. As we all know the nights are starting to draw in and it’s getting colder in the evenings and mornings, this tends to mean that for those who are not on mains gas the heating oil is used for the first time in months. For some unfortunates the heat will not come on and the reason for this is that the oil tank will be found to be empty and drained of its oil. Heating oil fuel thefts are an issue in the county, can I ask that tanks are checked regularly and if any suspicious activity is seen then it is reported.

We arrested three Hare Coursers a couple of weeks ago and these three are due in court toward the end of October, hopefully the magistrates will recognise that this activity for what it is and hand out effective sentences.

This time of year, because of the fields having been ploughed sees an increase in metal detecting both legal and illegal (Nighthawking), not only is damage caused to crops and the land but many historical artefacts are lost. If metal detectors are seen at night please dial 101 and report this.

No comment could do justice to what a good speaker we enjoyed when Chris Brown addressed our October Ladies Lunch. But ‘justice’ and ‘no comment’ figured large in what Chris, our Solicitor Advocate speaker, had to say to us, and he told his story so eloquently that it was easy to forget that we were listening to a ‘speaker’.

The story he told was riveting. First, Chris set the scene by talking us through the justice system. He did his best to correct our misconceptions gleaned from television drama or the occasional jury service experience and bemoaned the loss of local context that had resulted from the centralisation of magistrates’ courts.

He then illustrated the issue of defendants taking the “no comment“ stance with the story of ‘Steve’, his client who had done just that when accused of the murder of his long-term partner, ‘Jackie’, after she was found dead in bed, apparently asphyxiated. Both the context and the pathologist’s evidence seemed compelling and damning. Steve was found guilty and committed to prison for ‘life’ with a minimum tariff of thirteen years.

And yet. And yet… Steve’s solicitor was not satisfied and pursued the case to the Court of Appeal, the court where seemingly ancient Law Lords, with minds as sharp as a razor, went straight to the heart of the matter. The fresh evidence, presented by an internationally renowned pathologist, was able to demonstrate that, in fact, murder had not occurred. Jackie had died from ‘mixed drug toxicity overdose’. Steve was acquitted and released - regrettably after serving two years of his sentence.

A good story has to ‘show and not tell’. By the end of Chris’s talk we may not have even realised how much we had learned about the processes and procedures of the criminal justice system but, by golly, we had enjoyed the story. Thanks Chris!

Members were filled with enthusiasm when Henry Stanier came to talk to us about the Great Fen Project. The result will be a huge wetland area, mostly on peat soil, and much of it currently drained and farmed. Wildlife monitoring is throwing up some fascinating facts. The Tansy Beetle has colonised the area of Woodwalton Fen, even though there is no Tansy there! The only other site in England is the Ouse near York, where it does rely on the herb. The Great Reed Bush Cricket has also moved in using the mainline railway as a route. There are great Crested Newts and newly formed ponds are rapidly occupied by toads, newts and water plants. Bats have been monitored at Woodwalton Fen since 2010, with 9 species found. Wintering and breeding birds are monitored. Bird seed is grown on non-peaty soils from which Corn Buntings and Tree Sparrows are benefitting. On the Northern part of the Fen a system of viewpoints are excellent for viewing raptors in the winter. Birds like Short-eared Owl are increasing with 16 seen in the last 2 years. The route of the East Coast Mainline is again proving important, this time for migrant birds, with Redstart, Brambling, Firecrest and Yellow-browed Warblers reported. 75 species, like Lapwing and Redstart, are breeding on restored land.

Yellow Wagtails also breed but many more are seen on migration when 500 to 600 pass through! Up to 10 Cuckoos have been seen great news when this bird is declining in England. There is also a breeding population of Grey Partridge. Latest sightings are reported on the website, www.greatfen.org.uk, along with details of viewing points etc.

Future events: Indoor meetings are held on Thursday evenings at Great Witchingham Village Hall, Lenwade, at 7:30pm. All are welcome (£2 charge for non-members). 15th November – Arizona to Alaska with David Mason. Christmas social – booking necessary.

Field trips: 24th November; Cley and surrounding area. Sunday 6th January; Wensum Valley bird count – Why not enter a team?

Our friendship and fun with flowers continue to entertain members and guests at Drayton Village Hall on the third Tuesday in the month.

September and October meetings were very much fixed on Autumn with Christine Hewson’s demonstration in September entitled ‘Misty Nights’ and Susan Horne’s giving us a wealth of the shades of the season with ‘Changing Colours of Autumn’, in October.

November sees our last demonstration of the year and the spirit of Christmas will be all around. Our meeting on 20th November will be a much anticipated return visit of David Wright with his title ‘A Magical Musical Christmas’. We will also be having a variety of stalls to tempt you with goodies and more gifts for the season.

The meeting takes place at Drayton Village Hall at 7pm and all are welcome - Guests £5.

Continuing with the Christmas theme Bernard Collingsworth, local florist and flower arranger has kindly offered to take a workshop showing you how to make a decoration for your home, on Tuesday 27th November at 2pm. (For more details contact Anne Bridge on 01603 409847.)

DRAYTON HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION The speaker we had booked for September was unable to come, so a replacement was soon found. Luckily, we had a surprise “World Wide Tour” guided by Richard Hobbs, a local botanist, to see the flowers and plants which grow in the mountains of many countries and which will also grow in this country. Richard is well known for organising trips abroad to see these flowers and how they survive in all sorts of conditions – a very interesting evening visiting places like Switzerland, the Dolomites, the Canadian Rockies and many more mountainous regions – and it didn’t cost us a penny.

September was also the month for our Autumn Show. As we experienced all sorts of weather during the year, we were very pleased with the number of entries grown by our members - only a few less than last year. The hall looked fantastic, so many vegetables and flowers, plus entries in the cookery classes. We were greatly relieved.

The meeting this month is on November 6th when our speaker will be Peter Skeggs-Gooch from the well-established Thorneycroft Nursery.

He will be giving us a complete guide to Clematis. It is quite a few years since the club visited the nursery, so it will be good to see what’s new. Come and join us for another interesting evening – Drayton Village Hall at 7:30pm.

THE NORWICH ELECTRONIC ORGAN & KEYBOARD CLUB We meet on the last Tuesday of the month at Drayton Village Hall, with entertainment from top professional organists from around the country. The evening starts at 7:30pm, there is an interval with refreshments and a raffle, and finishes at 10:00 pm. There is no extra membership fee, entrance is £6 at the door.

Tuesday 25th September Steve Hubble is no stranger to the organ circuit having been a professional musician most of his life. He brought along a Yamaha Tyros 3, an M-Audio keyboard and a set of bass pedals and gave us a very wide variety of music ranging from the very gentle film themes of John Barry and other composers to the brashness of music from the rock ‘n’ roll era of Grease.

Starting off with a big build up and production of Somewhere from West Side Story he went on to Neil Diamond’s Hello Again, very appropriate for a return visit. Steve does ballads very well and there were some lovely arrangements using strings, piano, saxophone and muted trumpet. I’ve Got You Under my Skin and Ted Heath’s Hot Toddy showcased the big band voices on the Tyros, Tom Jones and The Shadows were featured from the 60s and we went right back to the 1920s for Muskrat Ramble. Local Dog Lovers Remember and Celebrate the Role of Dogs

In the run up to Remembrance Day Sunday 11th November, local dog sitters Barking Mad South Norwich are asking others to join them in commemorating the role which canine heroes have played both in times of conflict and everyday life throughout history.

Researchers have unearthed details in old newspaper records of how in WW1, heroic deeds were carried out by sentry dogs, casualty dogs and those acting as messengers, but animal lovers will also understand how canine companionship could have provided comfort and had a positive effect on morale for soldiers at war.

Debra Chatfield, family historian wrote in the Telegraph: “Throughout human history, the bond between man and dog has been unbreakable, and the role these animals played during the war was of paramount importance, as can be seen in numerous old newspaper reports.”

This special centenary year has seen Barking Mad launch a campaign to champion the benefits of dog companionship, working with inspirational charity Dogs for Good to sponsor an assistance dog in training named Prince, who will go on to change lives. In 2018, the ability of these wonderful creatures to be truly Man’s Best Friend has not changed at all over time.

Helen Tyler of Barking Mad South Norwich said: “Barking Mad is a huge advocate of remembering the special dogs in our lives, founding the UK’s first annual Dog Remembrance Month and having just repeated the successful event for a second time, with events such as memory walks and coffee mornings taking place throughout the country. A Facebook support group for those who have loved and lost a beloved pet has also been created.

The Dog Bereavement and Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Group has proved hugely popular with over 1,100 members, a number which is rapidly growing and proving the need for dog lovers to be able to talk about their grief with an audience of like-minded people. New members are actively welcomed to the group.”
